Hmm, video not available.
Anyway, the little clip on youtube is more than enough evidence of fraud to
make the official excuse an obvious deflection:

The Atlanta-based Weather Channel released a statement defending its employee.

“It’s important to note that the two individuals in the background are walking
on concrete, and Mike Seidel is trying to maintain his footing on wet grass,
after reporting on-air until 1:00 a.m. ET this morning and is undoubtedly
exhausted,” the network said.

Right now I think a lot of forecasters, not just Fake Weather Mike, have a
lot of egg on their faces. This was supposed to come ashore as a category
2 / 3, I think it was just barely a cat 1.

I'm sure the news stations made a lot of money selling ads!

Ha! Look up Hilton Coliseum in Ames, IA. I still remember an
engineering prof telling the city council that it was built on a big
berm on a 500 year floor plain and would never flood. It was barely
done before it went underwater in 1974. In the more recent floods, they
no longer try to move stuff to dry land, they just let it get ruined,
that way the taxpayers will buy them all new stuff. So every 5 years
or so, there is an all new BB floor and a buncha other stuff.Prof
Shapiro was a charlatan. He also neglected to tell the council that
they cut a big ramp in the east end down into the basement. A direct
pathway for the water to float the BB court floor. The berm was all
for show. Muey stupido!

Based on 500 yr floods, I am something like 3000 years old.

I keep wondering how the forecasters predicted Florence to gain and hold
strength until it hit land. What little I know saw the same with high water
temps and nothing in the way of steering winds to block it. It started at
Force 4 and hit at Force 2. Do we not understand hurricanes? Are the
reporting devices (buoys, etc) not working properly? Did something appear
like a new High or Low pressure area to weaken or steer it?

Anyone know?

Look at the hurricane tidbits videos from the past 2 nights for insights
into factors that steer and weaken these storms.

Re: [MBZ] OT Flo

2018-09-14 Thread Larry Turner via Mercedes
I keep wondering how the forecasters predicted Florence to gain and hold
strength until it hit land.  What little I know saw the same with high
water temps and nothing in the way of steering winds to block it.  It
started at Force 4 and hit at Force 2.  Do we not understand
hurricanes?  Are the reporting devices (buoys, etc) not working
properly? Did something appear like a new High or Low pressure area to
weaken or steer it?

Anyone know?

A hair more than 1/2”. I actually install it like plywood into the window
opening using clips rather than over the outside of the window. It’s far, far
easier, makes for smaller panels, and doesn’t require drilling holes in the
exterior walls of the house.

This is what I have for our windows and doors. Not cheap, but lets light in and
very light so it’s easy to handle and store:

https://www.lowes.com/pd/Storm-Busters-48-in-x-96-in-Clear-Polycarbonate-Hurricane-Shutters/3041437

With a 10% off coupon code it cost a little under $1,000 for enough of these to
cover all of my windows. Super light and really easy to handle, even the wife
could put them up if necessary.

I did the plywood thing for Irma, and That was a major PITA that took nearly a
day to complete. I can put these up in about two hours, if that.

Those wave heights never appear at the shoreline, but the wave action on
top of the storm surge is, nevertheless, a force that very few man-made

Those wave heights never appear at the shoreline, but the wave action on
top of the storm surge is, nevertheless, a force that very few man-made
structures can resist. There's a dome-home near the beach over on
Sullivan's Island, not far from me. That puppy would be what I would want,
if I lived on that beach.

I agree that Trenberth needs to dissociate himself from that editorial.
It is just anti-Trump hysteria, dressed up as science.

But Trenberth also needs to be careful what he says to today's
journalists who always have a strong political agenda. His claim about
“The ocean is warming up systematically”{and therefore driving stronger
hurricanes] is dubious at best. The National Weather Service was much
more scientific in their latest 'Discussion' of Florence. They said:

"A narrow window of opportunity remains during the next
24 hours or so for Florence to strengthen a little when
the hurricane passes over the warmer SSTs and deeper warm
water/higher upper-ocean heat content associated with the
Gulf Stream"

In other words, this is all about ocean currents and the Thermohaline
Circulation, not Global Warming. That is the conventional wisdom.

Trenberth should consider supporting the truth, or if misquoted, fight
back against those who misinterpret everything for political purposes.

The National Hurricane Center has downgraded Florence to a Category 3
hurricane, even though it has broadened into a bigger storm with more
associated energy. It is still a monster, like so many others in the
past.

From a meterologist on another email list:

There is absolutely no truth to anything in this article. None.
Participating in the spreading of this fake climate hysteria is
inexcusable for anyone who calls himself a scientist or has training in
atmospheric science such as Kevin Trenberth as there is no metric that
can be used to distinguish any of these hurricanes in the present to
anything in the past that proves atmospheric CO2 is the cause of any of
it.

It is no wonder that so many have lost all respect for those that
participate in spreading fake, untrue and unprovable claims about severe
weather, tying it to "climate change" whose definition has been expanded
by these kooks to include anything they choose to spread another story
full of hysteria and falsehoods.

Mr. Trenberth, I don't know how you sleep at night. It looks as though
you have no conscience with respect to maintaining the truth. Harvey's
atmospheric characteristics were no different than many other hurricanes
of the past and there is no metric you can use that proved otherwise.
Harvey's flooding rains were caused by the storm being synoptically
slowed as it made landfall by surrounding weather systems which as anyone
knows is a normal occurance given the limitless combinations of weather
patterns that are produced continuously by the chaotic atmospheric system
that we well understand that produces our daily weather. When a tropical
system slows or stalls for those reasons and loses its ability to induct
additional water vapor from the tropical ocean, the result is a cooling
of the system as it loses energy. That produces torrential rainfall and
if the system is slowed, it is concentrated over the area that the
stalling occurs in.

The sea surface temperatures in the Atlantic and Caribbean basin
are typically warmer in the cold phase of the PDO [Pacific Decadal
Oscillation] as we are in, and we find that measurements of sea surface
temperatures and resulting surface air dewpoint temperatures are no
different now than they have been for many decades.

This story therefore, is complete crap, with Trenberth's name attached to
it.

Have you ever considered installing some form of shutters that would
remain attached to the buildings so that all you had to do when a storm
threatens is to close them and lock them down? Given the frequency with
which you folks seem to have to batten down the hatches, it would seem
to me that you should try to make it a quick and easy process. I am
planning to do something similar with the cottage at the lake. Every
fall we screw panels over all of the windows and every spring we remove
them. If I convert them into hinged shutters, it will be easier and
faster and I won't have to store them in the summer. I can also close
the shutters over the larger and more exposed windows between visits if
I think it a good idea.

time) were from 6 and 7 years ago, so the things sat since then but
fired right up and worked fine, data were still good in them.  We called
the company and talked to an engineer there who helped us with a coupla
things we couldn't figure out.

This is a newer version but basically the same thing
https://www.ysi.com/6920-v2-2  They are spendy, several $k.  These were
NOAA "surplus" had been sitting in a storage room for a long time but
had all the stuff with them, including the hand-held units for field
programming and downloading data and a bunch of extra sensors.  Probably
a good $50k worth of stuff, your tax dollars at work!  My professor
buddy got them from someone he knows who works at the marine lab here,
she was glad they were going to get used for something useful.  They had
actually used them in some similar study up the coast a bit.

Here is one we put in a tidal creek near a friend's property, it drains
a fairly developed area.  We put one in a another branch of the larger
creek it drains into, across the road, which drains an undeveloped area,
so we will get some good comparisons of how the water quality is
different between the two distinct watersheds. We attached some 4" PVC
field drain pipe to a stake and a root here, and to a dock on the other
one, and then dropped the sonde into the pipe.  The water can flow
through the pipe while protecting the instrument.  It was just about low
tide when we put it out, so it was not down in the water in that creek,
hard to slog out into it through the pluff mud, but it will be covered
when the tide gets up, or when the rain runoff is flowing.  Tide will
get up 6ft or more in there from where it was in the pic.

My buddy has a nice (surplus) weather station we will set up near these
2 units, so we will have a lot of good weather and rainfall data to
correlate with the water readings.  SCIENCE!!!  Take that Flo!  Turns
out there are some Weather Underground hobby stations close by too, we
can get their data for comparison.  Fun times.

As the picture of the email I posted just after you shows, there is now a
significant southward bulge in NHC's possible track as it makes landfall,
even to south Georgia.

So, yes, you should board up. May you have strength and help to do it.

It's interesting to manually step through all of the advisories at
https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/refresh/graphics_at1+shtml/092830.shtml?gm_track#contents
to see how their predictions progress. I think they are now counting in
the European predictions more.

On a positive note my buddy and I got our water monitoring probes
deployed at 3 locations around the Island yesterday evening, set up to
record data for 15 days every 10 minutes so we will get water depth,
temp, pH, turbidity, chlorophyll, and salinity. We'll get tidal surge
data and whatever happens with the water levels and quality from the
rains.  We have been fighting stupid development decisions that are
destroying the Island, this will help us with SCIENCE!

Wow, you are prepared! As you might guess, I'm all for the science.
What kind of instruments are you using?
