Re: [MBZ] PANIC! BAD weather forecast!!!!
I can only recall 2 times in my lifetime when we were totally buried in snow and could not move about for a bit. The one I related earlier in I think 1986 and another in March of 1966. We had another in April 1997 but we were in Grand Forks ND that weekend and could not get home. We were supposed to go home on Sunday but did not get there until Tuesday if I recall correctly. In ND it was mostly an ice storm that left the roads covered with close to an inch of ice. Further north in Canada it was snow. We listened to the radio and heard that Winnipeg was buried and the buses had stopped running etc. We thought that when we got home, we would have to leave the Suburban out at the major street and walk in to the house. We were happy to find out that they had already ploughed out our front street and back lane. My mother's car was in our garage and she wanted to go home so we had to dig our way into and out of the garage. The snow was half way up the pedestrian door and hard enough to stand on. I had to crouch down and jump into the garage to get shovels. We could have built igloos of it as we were cutting out chunks of snow when we tried to shovel it away. The good thing about snow that time of year is that it does not last, even this far north. It was all gone in a few days. Of course that has issues too. The weekend that we were stuck in Grand Forks that I referred to above, was about a week before they were almost totally flooded. The main north south highway was closed for a month or more shortly after we got home. Re: [MBZ] PANIC! BAD weather forecast!!!!
The problem that we have with the powdery stuff is that here on the prairies, it is too open and the wind blows it around to much. No visiblity and the road gets polished so it is slippery. We keep getting little bits of snow so my sidewalk is a mess etc. If you don't get it cleared off before people walk on it, then you basically cannot get it cleared off. We have an inch or so of ice and snow built up on the concrete that will be there for a while. The other problem I get is that my garage faces east west and the sun melts the snow off of the south side. It then fills my eavestrough with ice and makes a big icy mess a the downspout end. The water splashes onto the stucco and freezes and causes the stucco to fall apart. I need to come up with some better solution to the problem but I am not sure what it is. I have considered building a dormer on that side of the garage roof in an attempt to change the melt characteristics. It also ruins the shingles as there is a constant freeze and thaw cycle on the south side of the roof. If you don't think solar energy works, come and look at my garage. It can be minus 20 but at high noon with the sun shining, the snow will be melting off of the south side of my garage. Of couse, as soon as the water runs down to where it is shadowed by the neighbor's garage, it re-freezes. I get a similar scenario on my house as the snow melts on the roof (later once it warms up more) and runs into the trough and down the downpipe but then freezes as it is in the shadow between my house and the one to the south of us. Then the downpipe freezes and bursts and the water runs down the stucco and damages it. I guess I need the industrial style downpipes that are open to the outside but they would look odd on the house. We had skis and I went out just to look around the neighborhood. I had snow shoes in the garage at the lake so the next summer I bought them home. They have now hung in my garage for almost 23 years and I have yet to use them. I wonder if they would fall apart if I did. The bindings are no doubt so stiff that they would not be much good. Not sure about the webbing which is leather that has been varnished. They may be junk so I should check and throw them out if they could not be used. I am not hanging them on the wall for decoration.
