Re: [MBZ] Video fun times

2018-04-14 Thread Scott Ritchey via Mercedes
Lots of emotional appeal to wick lanterns and nothing beats a Coleman-style
(gas or LP) lantern for raw light output. But the new LED lanterns are hard to
beat for convenience. I have been using a couple of these:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B011J9XXP4/
They come on instantly and give good light for general purposes. I'm still on
the original set of batteries and probably have 20+ hours of operation so far.
My only complaint od the switch is hard to find in the dark.

For camping a gas pressure appliance is the way to go, a flat wick lantern will

An Aladdin kerosene mantle lamp. Bright, dead quiet. We have two.

Mantles used to use thorium oxide, which is mildly radioactive. (I know I
stuffed one into a gamma counter I had once, and it definitely reacted.)
Not sure what they use now, but they're not quite as bright and emit
somewhat greener light, if I'm remembering the old ones correctly. I can't
find the gamma counter, my family might have tossed it, so I can't test
current mantles the same way.

There are Aladdin kerosene lamps that are really nice for a silent light (and

Another way to improve and LED lantern would be to fill it with water - use
glue or tape if needed to keep the water in, then shoot it with something
like a .30-06. This works a treat with things like empty beer cans . . .

Re: [MBZ] Video fun times

2018-04-10 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Heh, I LIKE it.
For the next one I intend to "convert" to kerosene which is a thing lots of
guys do to whitegas lanterns because kero is generally cheaper than whitegas.
Thing is we'll need a filler port, so drill a hole in the plastic body so we
can add kerosene. Then kerosene requires preheat so I'll have to drill a hole
in the top part to add alcohol to preheat. Of course theres no lighting port
but since the "globe" is plastic I can just burn through that with the torch...
Should be fun times, I'll be sure to have my safety squints engaged...

down that path?

Idea for next vid on "improving" the LED lantern.  Start by replacing the
body (plastic) with parts from a metal lantern, in stages.  "Reflector and
handle just don't feel right, let's replace those with these sturdy metal
parts..."  "I'd like to have the metal fuel tank, need that heft to hold
this thing down in the wind"

Next "Hmmm, this cold blue light just isn't cutting it, maybe I'll figure
out a way to make the color a little warmer by putting this old mantel over
the light..."

Soon you'll have rebuilt the LED lamp into a much-improved version, that
happens to use white gas instead of electrons...
