Afaik there is only one vacuum pump on the car. It is on the front of the
motor and has a big vacuum line coming off to feed the brake booster. It
has a rubber diaphragm in it that can go bad. Removing it requires removing
the fan.

I have no idea what you are referring to near the firewall. The only vacuum
lines on the injection pump control the shift pressure in the transmission
based upon throttle position IIRC.

It's not so much being careful as being able to get the hex screws
off/on the pump as they are not visible and you have to contort a bit to
reach them -- just fiddly.

You want to clean the pump well, be careful not to get schmutz in the
engine, and put loctite on the center screw (ask me how I know!).

It also helps to have a little hold-down thing (I made one from a small
block of wood screwed to another piece of wood) to compress the spring
while putting it together.

Getting the fan off/on is the worst part of the job, also fiddly.

For a day... Today it ran on again, so I dropped it at the shop.

Diagnosis: Vacuum pump diaphragm was leaking oil, causing attached hose to
swell and intermittently fail. The tech was able to clean it off and make
it tight again, but this will likely recur, so I need to replace this part.

More than you would ever want to know about vacuum shutdowns and how to

Well, I will probably have to do that, but I was looking for some guidance
on how to diagnose it myself.

Vacuum locks are OK. I've BTDT but too long ago to remember. Any

Thanks for the feedback. Again, there is nothing wrong with the interior
locks. They function normally and hold vacuum all day. Nothing has changed
in that regard.

2018-02-17 Thread Peter Frederick via Mercedes
You can test the servo with a MitiVac -- supply line is brown and servo line
is brown with a blue stripe I think. It is on the W123 and W115 anyway.

Problems are:

Bad servo (won't pull down with vac application, won't hold vac) -- to fix,
replace servo.

Bad line from the main vac line, or broken nipple or cracked connector. No
vacuum to servo, but servo holds and shuts off the car if a MitiVac is applied.
Main line must be replaced to fix this, the connector with the fittings isn't
replaceable.

Bad keyswitch -- servo will be good, vac will be good at the main line, but
never appears at the servo line.

Broken lines -- this is the usual cause, all that hard plastic line gets
brittle with age. If you've done any work on the driver's side of the engine
lately, almost certainly it's one of the lines.

My '83 300TD won't turn off except by manually pressing the shutoff under
the hood.

Vacuum locks are OK. I've BTDT but too long ago to remember. Any
suggestions on how to go about diagnosing the cause?

Seems like it is usually one of those under hood rubber connectors, or the
check valve going to the interior. The interior stuff can all be diagnosed
from the passenger footwell IIRC. You need one of those mityvac hand pumps
ideally to test each branch.

Put a hose on the shutoff and suck on it to see if it’s working. If that works
then you need to trace the vacuum lines to make sure they’re connected
properly. Or you can use a long hose and run it inside the cabin and just suck
on it to stop it.
