Curt,

I recall an early 90's MBCA driving event at Summit Point Raceway in
WV... One member drove one of these on the 2 mile road course for
time trials.. We used a sundial to time him!!
He took all the heat we could give him and just smiled!
On this one, seems a little pricey but could be a great weekender for
the hills..

Take care,

Chuck

Two things that caught my eye - the "rub strips" on the roof are not factory,
and the dash isn't cracked.

Dash cracking is almost mandatory with these cars, especially the blue ones.
With over 200k on the clock I find it intriguing that it's not cracked. Could
it have been replaced?

The engine compartment is so clean it's scary.

Okay. Beyond being an '85...

The middle seat head rests seem to be missing. And the seat belt
latches are either missing or under the seat. At the very
least, the retaining rubber strap is broken allowing the latch to fall under
the seat.

The antenna is up, and I doubt the radio is on.

No mention of the state of the sunroof.

No mention of the state or condition of the SLS system.

On 123 wagons, SLS was standard in all markets but could be deleted under
certain circumstances by special order.

If you can't find the SLS on a 123 wagon, it is because it was removed.

I've got a 85 Calif Turbo and it now has a catalytic converter. I know
the air cleaners are God awful expensive but I was curious if there were
any other complaints with the Calif version other than we don't salt
our roads so they stay pretty rust free.

Dash cracking is almost mandatory with these cars, especially the

not cracked. Could it have been replaced?

The engine compartment is so clean it's scary.

2012-07-29 Thread ernest breakfield
seems if your wagon doesn't have the Self Leveling System, it's missing
one of the coolest things about the wagons (though it was a PITA if it
ever started to cause trouble). you can see far too many dragging their
asses around town here because people didn't want to pay what it costs
to fix them, but that's a TD issue, not an '85 issue.
as for the trans, i've heard the '85s trans referred to derisively
as "the little one", and know that the local Benz tranny shop doesn't
like them. (i haven't been forced to look into it any further, knock on
wood!)

too many things about the '85s make them 'one year cars', and the
CA versions are even more full of oddities due to the Trap Oxidizer that
MBZ threw at them that year.

one things that especially irks me about the '85 is the Injection
Pump; while it was alleged to help the motor produce more power, seems
there's an Electric Fuel Pressure Regulator that means that even with
mechanical injection, these things won't work without electricity. (that
just seems *wrong* to me somehow,... mechanical FI should always just
*work*.)
because of that pump making more power, the '85 has a rear axle
ratio that's taller; better for the highway, but worse in town, and that
even affects the instrument panel since a different speedo is needed.
then, i believe there's a torque converter that's got a different
stall speed; not sure if that was supposed to be related to the IP and
axle ratio, or emissions; i've heard stories about it being both.

for CA, the TO was an issue you'll hear many people complain about.
IIRC, there were 3 Factory "campaigns", causing most of them to
eventually be changed out to be Catalytic Converters (if they hadn't
eaten themselves up already), but we're still stuck with Intake and
Exhaust Manifolds that are unique to that subset of that one year, a
less common turbo, and an air filter that's not shared with any other
300 diesel, and priced accordingly.

keep your fingers crossed that yours remains running well!

I don't have data for durability, but I don't like how it

The M117 engine is very robust, and will run a LONG time with the oil
pressure at that level. I didn't see much drop at all with 105F days and
A/C running in the M117 in the '78 450SLC. The oil pressure is not an
issue, at all.

What, you don't like headrests?

As for the oil pressure...I'd be more worried if it doesn't pin when
revved.

Yes, what MMM said - pegging the gauge is the more important test than the
idle pressure in an MB engine.

I read the manual on my 450SL (D-jet) and it said that a drop to half bar at
idle was standard (when new). AS long as pressure returns to 3 bar when you

Re: [MBZ] Droolworthy 280SE 4.5 on BAT

2016-12-22 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
Even I knew that - from bitter experience.

We drove the 1973 280 all the way from D.C. to Cincinnati. As we got off
the interstate, the oil pressure dropped precipitously. I reached into the
glove box and frantically called one of the Friends of MBCA listed in the
booklet that the Club handed out in those days (1983). I had a brief
conversation with a Club member and he informed me that this was entirely
normal - under load the needle needs to be pinned but at idle or cruising
it is permitted to slack off.

A good time was had by all after this misadventure and needless diversion.

I always thought Silbergrün was silver with a greenish tint to it.

What I really like is the color of the green Porch visible in some of the pics.
That's my idea of a green car, although I must say 269U (emerald green in USA,
turmalingrün in der homeland) is starting to grow on me.

Nice shape, but yeah I noticed the same issue under the hood, plus the
engine is rather dirty - need's Martha work.

Too bad it is missing a pedal...

My 1997 S420 in 269U is as dark as my 1999 E320 in Midnight Blue.

I saw a 200x E320 advertised as Aspen Green that's probably the color of yours.
Had dark tan interior, maybe saddle? That's my favorite color combo, but I have
grown to like parchment over midnight blue too. I just like a richer color
leather on a green car than the usual pale parchment/mushroom/etc. (my S420 is
mushroom)

the 14-15mpg on a good day along with the high cost of replacement
parts. But if i could afford another I'd buy one in a second. current
bid for this one is $6100 - well worth that considering the rapidly
escalating cost of collector cost...

Look carefully those front seats are pretty poorly done and don't match

Air gaps for hood are off, could indicate deeper collision damage.

Wrong seat belts for third row.

There should be a slot just below the side window where the belt
goes through to the spool. What I see is belts that look like
lap belts across the seat. I also don't see recessed cavity in
the seat upright where the latch is supposed to be. So is this
a seat from a much older car? The little recess for the latches
isn't a simple alteration.

I can't speak for an 85 model, but my 1979 300TD did not have the three point
belts, but basic two point lap belts.

I wonder if someone converted this car using an older seat and belts. It's
certainly easy enough to do, as everything is prepped on the chassis to do it -
you merely have to add the seat cushions and the belts. All the mounting
points and everything are already there.
