[meteorite-list] Re: Thuathe found in graveyard.
A few years ago I lead a meteorite search with the just founded Colorado Meteorite Society (COMETS) for the Johnstown achondrite fall of 1924. We did visit (not search) the graveyard where a burial service was interrupted by a fifteen pound meteorite landing thirty feet from the church door. Our club did not find any Johnstown that day. However, today I purchased an 86 gram Thuathe meteorite that was found in the Ha Mothoane graveyard by Motlalepula Ramoabi. I trust that Motalepula did not use a burial shovel to dig this meteorite out of the ground as did the gentlemen at Johnstown, Colorado, during the burial service on that warm July day. I have Mr. Chauncey Walden to thank for bringing this meteorite from a most unusual location to my attention. Mr. Walden has some Thuathe left for sale (our club members purchased some from him tonight). And to the guys on this list that eat meteorites, my answer is...NO WAY, you sick puppies! Re: [meteorite-list] Fair Price for Park Forest?
Hey Walter, Do these look like Park Forest to you, first of all. I have'nt seen any close-ups till this set, but for a fresh fall, which we'll assume these are meteorites and they did'nt hit a dog, cow, crashed through a roof and destroy any CPU peripherals(printers, etc.), or the owner-for a supposedly untested L6, one of our list allegedly eyeballed it as an L6 Chondrite - a fair price would be in the neighborhood of $10.00gram. But you have to tell the owner that condition is a factor in pricing it- you know, fusion crust coverage percentage, fractures (pieces missing). I personally would wait and see what the 50lb. heads (scientists) come up with as far as any unusual composition, cause you might regret selling it so fast if it has a unique composition. Unless you know for a fact that they have a definitive analysis on this sucker, already, I would advise the fellow to wait it out and not join in in the selling frenzy. There's some guy on (SELL IT NOW)like Ebay, I personally never heard of it, maybe it's a part of Ebay, is selling his for $200.00gram-that's just greediness if the fall has'nt even been analyzed, even if it is a scientificaly proven ordinary L6, $200.00gr.? you gotta be out of your frieken mind to pay that. One of the List, I think it's Matteo(mcomemeteorites.it) wrote a check it out about the $200.00gram fellow. I hope that helps you a little bit. [meteorite-list] Some initial observations and OPINIONS of a collecter
(I sent this post last night, but I don't think it made it through Sorry if this is a duplicate.) Greetings List, Having a great time, wish you were here!! I really mean that. This has been the ride of a lifetime. I've had 12 hours of sleep since Thursday, just split a pizza with my dog and thought I'd take a minute and share a couple of things with all of you. All of the following is my opinion only. There is more than enough misinformation flying around. I just spent about an hour at the microscope to take a look at some of the Park Forest I've been scrambling for in the last few days. Some neat stuff. My first impressions of this fall were LL6 (it does indeed look a lot like Kilabo), light gray matrix, black veins, but I'm also seeing a quite a bit of troilite in these pieces. A lot more than I've seen in Kilabo. Others that want to share, please chime in. I'm also seeing two very distinct litholigies. Now, granted I only have one specimen of Kilabo and again I'm just a rookie. The other is nearly black in appearance and looks to be, dare I say it, a melt. Just to give myself, and you a quick comparsion I grabbed about 60 small pieces of specimens. Total weight ~16.5 grams. These were found in various areas of Park Forest. I divided them into 3 groups, the ones that look like Kilabo + Troilite, let's call them regular. The ones that look like melt and some pieces that are about 50/50. (I hope all of this scientific jargon isn't confusing you);) This is how it broke down. Regular 3.7 grams, Melt 8 grams and 50/50 4.8 grams. Now I'm not saying this is the trend, all told it seems that the vast majority of what I've seen in the last 4 days has been the regular, but there is something going on with this that I cant wait to get some clarification on. Steve Witt says it's a melt!! No, I'm saying that there's something a little different going on with Park Forest. Just my opinion, would love to hear some comments. I do plan on selling some of this, I hope everyone can get a specimen, and everyone comes away happy. I'm now officially nearly comatose, so will post more when I next return from Park Forest. If anyone wants to write a book on this fall and wants some stories that are absolutely beyond belief (and want to spend a couple of hours on the phone with me let me know). This has been, without a doubt the most memorable four days of my life. Good night. Take care, Steve = Steve Witt IMCA #9020 http://www.meteoritecollectors.org __ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! I have a proposition can anyone anywhere please tell me why every time there is a "meteorite fall" the media repeatedly calls it a meteor shower? I mean we all know what a meteor shower is. I also enjoyed Mike Martinez' beaming capacities and Fred Hall's dry humor about (not) finding a (single) meteorite down in Chile ;-) Wouldn't it be even more fun to include the birthday bash party in full swing, and also to include some scenes from Twink's and Jim's barbecue?! Re: [meteorite-list] Meteorite fall Vs. Shower
Title: Re: [meteorite-list] Meteorite fall Vs. Shower Hi Ron, The answer to your question, is there any way to educate these people? is no. Anyone who has ever been involved in a newspaper reported event knows they NEVER get it right. For them to become educated requires an incident or series of incidences that goes on for weeks and weeks. The more competition (TV, Radio, newspapers magazines, etc) there AND the longer the air time (in terms of days, weeks and months) the more they SLOWLY become somewhat more sophisticated. BTW, just as a matter of interest: when you have a fall such as this with dozens and dozens of stones, it IS a SORT of shower. Just not in keeping with the common usage of terms regarding falls. Re: [meteorite-list] Volcano Bombs Impact Breccia Identification
Hello Mark and List Bombs are typically highly vessiculated magmas. What you may be thinking of are ejected old magmas which are ripped from the walls of a volcanic vent and would have shapes that are irregular if not just plain blocky. These differ from bombs in that they are from previous events and may be breciated magmas, and that becomes then a problem to determine origin other than terrestrial. Bombs on the other hand, will usually be of freshly melted material and can be very frothy in texture as well as having aerodynamic forms. Both types can occur in an eruption, but I'd expect ash to be the more common found with old magma ejecta. Mark --- Mark Fox [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: March 31, 2003 Greetings Meteorite Enthusiasts! Harlan, Do not take this wrong as I mean no offense. There has been roughly 300 messages posted to the list regarding this fall in the last 72 hours. If you did not read them you have completely missed the story and the reason why there is not a flood of it for sale. Otherwise you probably wouldn't be asking. It is probably available but I think it will be awhile before any of our guys offer it besides Steve Arnold in Chicago who is selling micros. Some of the dealers did get some and you can figure on it selling for 20.00 dollars or more a gram, probably alot more. To know why the price is so high you will have to go through the 300 plus emails and read what actually went on with the press, the museums and the police. I suggest you go through the archives and read the way things went down and then wait patiently for some to surface. While you are waiting start saving your pennies. Mark M. It seems that the native americans used these rocks for cooking and for fire ring rocks. Re: [meteorite-list] Forest Park Meteorite Fall
This has turned out to be the meteorite fall of the century. So many great stories over the past week of people with their cars and houses hit. It is also refreshing to know that most of the people who have benefited really need the money. You can't blame them for asking as much as the market will bear for their once-in-a-lifetime finds. I think the even if I wasn't a meteorite collector I would not even consider selling a meteorite that fell through my roof. Just how many times in the past has this happened? Not many. It is too bad that the weather in Chicago has not been co-operating as it will be interesting to see how quickly the specimens rust that sit out in the rainy weather only to be found a week after the fall. It is possible that the weight of the pristine specimens will be far less than the total weight of this fall once it is ultimatelydetermined. Re: [meteorite-list] Forest Park Meteorite Fall
There is only about 14 to 20 kilos known, only about 6 kilos in private hands. The rest is still with the owners, all of who saw the advice of the plantarium yesterdat telling them not to sell, it with worth far more than any dealer will offer them. So thanks to them, the people now want millions. No problem, those stones are off the market for a few years. What little is available is almost all spoken for. The pieces that have been found since the rain (and it is raining HARD right now) are all rusted already. [meteorite-list] Twink JimRe: Meteorite-list digest, Vol 1 #1586 - 24 msgs
I just watched my CD-ROM of the Tucson 2003 show video last night with my wife. Yes, it was great! I even had a small part in it (about 28 seconds out of my total 15 minutes of fame). I was quite happy to see that Twink Jim had big parts in the video. These two individuals absolutely define class. Just look in the dictionary, you'll see their photos. Seriously, back in July I uprooted and moved my family from Ohio to Tucson. The absolutely FIRST people we met here in town (other than our realtor) were Twink and Jim. They came out on the day after we arrived with lunch from Baggins and not just one but TWO house warming gifts (a Gold Basin and a Canyon Diablo). :) Class indeed. - Bob Martino, Tucson, AZ Can you really name a star? Only 3 times a year for a shower? Does anyone know what they really mean by that? There are more than that a month if you look at http://comets.amsmeteors.org/meteors/calendar.html. However, ones that hit the earth in this way there would be less of. Do they mean a found strewn field? Good on you Mike. Glad you got it. Pity it missed the PC. Re: [meteorite-list] Meteorite fall Vs. Shower
Hi, Michael, Everybody, You're probably right that the answer is no. However, about that terminology. When a rock is in space, it's a meteroid. When a meteoroid gets involved with a planet and its atmosphere, it's a meteor. When a meteor survives to reach the planetary surface or something on the planetary surface, it's gets promoted to meteorite. We call the comet-associated swarms of meteoroids that sweep the earth at regular orbital intervals meteor showers in advance of the event because we have no expectation that any of them will ever make it to the ground. But they are called showers because of their close association in time and space. (That's close in celestial terms; a meteor at the beginning of a shower may be millions of miles and hours away from one at the end of a shower.) Presumably, rocks and dust that are not going to contact the earth are meteoroid showers, except it sounds more professional if you call them meteoroid streams. (Then there's always the old science fiction standby: the meteor swarm! Good to avoid that one.) It seems obvious to me that a rain of rocks from the sky is a meteorite shower. However, you could argue that even the 1,000's of fragments of something like Holbrook started out as one lousy rock and one rock does not a shower make. Of course, they're not meteorites until they reach the ground, so by the time they become meteorites, there are 1,000's! One meteor (not a shower) becomes a meteorite shower. However, since the term shower obscures a fundamental fact about meteoritic break-up in the atmosphere, I bet it's not a term naybody likes. But I'll bet if you were standing under one, like Winslow Street in Park Forest at 12:30 a.m., 03-27-03, shower would seem a completely under-dramatic term. Barrage might have suited it better! Sterling K. Webb - Michael L Blood wrote: Hi Ron, The answer to your question, is there any way to educate these people?
To releave the suspense, there are NO occurrences of volcanos/volcanic geology in eastern North America since before the Triassic(200±mya).* The only volcanic stems left today in the Eastern North American plate are a part of a plutonic and volcanic series in New England (Devonian 345 ±mya). All were along the margins of the eastern seaboard. There are about 9 crypto-volcanic structures in the central US that have been identified as astroblemes. After the Cretaceous(65 mya) volcanos flourished in the western US. As to the natural occurrence of volcanic material on the Wisconsin and Michigan Peninsulas. Not unless it was imported for barbecues! I've never seen a brecciated volcanic bomb and I don't think it exists by definition. (Note Mark's post on magmas and xenoliths even if he did not call them that) There is more smelting slag in the Great Lakes area than another place I know of. It was used to pave roads, build railroad ballast, even dumped into the lakes. ( Anyone remember the emerald material left by aliens recovered on the lake floor some guy was selling on the internet?) Impact breccia could, in theory, have been transported from any of several craters on the Canadian Shield.--by glaciers or as a part of some smelting ore transport. NON impact related Breccia lenses can occasionally be found along contact faces of faults and are occasionally brought to surface in mining operations. Impact breccias look like melts or rocks that have been roasted. Other breccias likely to be found near you are more likely to have a limestone/calcium content..which will effervesce in hydrochloric acid. They will most likely contain clasts which look sedimentary. I hope this helps to exclude volcanic bombs as a source... Be it remembered that one or two lunar meteorites have been found with a vessiculated fusion crust ( just to keep you on needles) Regards, Elton * There may be a couple of islands in the arctic circle but those are associated with the icelandic system and not the North American Plate. __ Meteorite-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

[meteorite-list] Honduran Moon Rock Forfeited To The United States
National Aeronautics and Space Administration Office of Inspector General Washington, D.C. 20546 March 31, 2003 RELEASE 2003-025: HONDURAN MOON ROCK FORFEITED TO THE UNITED STATES On March 26, 2003, U. S. District Judge Adalberto Jordan, ordered that the United States is entitled to forfeit a moon rock stolen from the government of the Republic of Honduras and introduced into the United States in violation of United States Customs laws. The moon rock was originally given to the Republic of Honduras as one of many goodwill gifts of moon rocks and other lunar mission mementos given to friendly nations in 1973. Law enforcement agents, in a sting operation aimed at preventing fraudulent moon rock and lunar material sales, seized the moon rock after it had been imported into the United States. The government of Honduras then formally requested the United States to return the moon rock to Honduras. The United States filed a complaint in federal court against the moon rock's importer seeking forfeiture of the moon rock on the grounds that it was stolen property introduced into the United States in violation of customs laws. The Federal Court found that the government and the people of the Republic of Honduras had not transferred title to the moon rock under Honduran law and the court upheld the forfeiture of the property. Special Agents from the NASA Office of Inspector General, the Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement of the Department of Homeland Security, and the United States Postal Inspection Service conducted the investigation. Assistant United States Attorney James H. Swain and United States Customs Service Attorney Jonathan Zwibel handled the case.
