[meteorite-list] Website Update, Meteorite Chat Room

2003-06-30 Thread MARK BOSTICK
Hello Everybody, Still working on my website, I seem to continue to add 4-7 pages a day to it. One of the new pages today, if the subject line didn't tell you...is a meteorite chat room. While I do not in any way see this as a rival to the list here, sometimes it is easier to be able to talk back and forth in a fashion that the list does not let you do. It is after 3 in the mourning here...so after I send this I will be going to sleep likely...but I will try to spendsome timetomorrow in the room letting everyone test it out. Perhaps, if others wanted to, we could meet once a week at a certain time. (Which from my understanding is how this list started). http://www.meteoritearticles.com/chatroom.html Automated features like the chat room and my recent poll are easy work on us webmastersor at least after they are built...so I will look at ways to continue to add more to my site. [meteorite-list] Anti-rust

2003-06-30 Thread Joseph Murakami

Heres a bit of info while I was investigating
anti-rust..

The vapor emitters are fascinating, but how about for our
open-air specimens on displays??
This may be prohibitively costlyIll have to await their
reply to my inquiries.

This system is for 4WDs, SUV, autos, but I
imagine it might be adaptable for our larger meteorites. Anyone out there with rusty 300 lb Campos??

http://www.counteractrust.com/

The CounterAct electronic rust prevention system uses a process
called 'capacitive coupling' to
apply a measurable current to every metallic component of a vehicle that's
earthed to the battery. A small unit, usually mounted on the firewall, detects
the amount of power required to create an electrostatic field that will keep
the metal structure electron-rich and then provides that power, reducing the
ion mobility that's the basis of the corrosion process, The unit is fed from
the vehicle's battery, drawing about as much current as an LCD clock.
So the system operates by applying one of the principles of electrochemistry -
that an oxidation reaction can be slowed or retarded by creating a surplus of
electrons to the metal from a supplementary source.

RE: [meteorite-list] Anti-rust

2003-06-30 Thread mark ford

Hi,

Problem is that irons (and indeed chondrites)
actually contain a [mixture] of metals and there therefore is an electronic
potential between different metals which is aggravated by water. In a vehicle/car
which is nearly all the same type of steel, electronic protection will probably
work ok, since all surfaces are nicely earthed to the auto/car chassis. But I
doubt if it would work on the dissimilar metals such as those in meteorites
because you could never even out all the charges.

Vapor Corrosion inhibitors or VCIs
are chemical emmiters that stop
rust they work in a much different
way, they emit a molecular coating which settles on the meteorite / metal
surface just a few atoms thick, and stop the air/water from reaching the
surface thus stopping rust. The coating is so thin that it is not even noticeable
but it really does work and is used extensively for this purpose.

Hello,

I am currently treating a 150 lb Campo for rusting
problems.

It will take about 6 months, an it is currently into
its 4th month.

I will post the results.

Also, the NaOH solution that I have used can also be
use in an electrolytic process where the meteorite
becomes the anode and the offending chlorine ions are
driven out of the specimen. I have not tried this
yet, and have chosen to use the passive method of
letting the specimen sit in the solution for extended
lenghts of time.

Does the person in question (buyer) wish to present his side of the case on
the List? If you can make a compelling case, you may be able to swing
opinion, which presently seems to be running strongly against a refund.
Myself, I understand that prices fluctuate, and a better (or worse) price
may come along at any time. I have overpaid for some of my meteorites, but
I still love 'em all, and accept the occasional inflation/deflation as part
of the price of this hobby.

BTW, 'twarn't me! Are we at #495 or #494 now? :-)

[meteorite-list] Dealer Refunds (Ron Hartman)

2003-06-30 Thread Ron Hartman
OK, I'll put in my 3-cents worth! (Inflation :=)

I, too, vote against the refund unless the buyer has had the item for just a
few days, in which case I would allow a refund simply because someone
changed their mind; and I would do that to establish good-will. But, let
me say the following:

In dealing with the meteorite community since 1963, but to a greater extent
within the last few years, I have to say that in my own personal experience,
I see that we have a very specialized and as a rule well - mannered, nitch
group (compared to others on the outside). Most sellers and almost all
collectors, even when you consider occasional temperamental flare-ups, seem
to be a quite easy-going, agreeable and pleasant group of people to deal
with and transactions go smoothly with only the very least of exceptions.
The weeds in the patch are well-known and reputations of dealers are
pretty transparent. I think of this as the meteorite-world of trade as
opposed to the real-world of commerce.

With the establishment of www.membranebox.com three years ago, this
continued as I dealt with dealers and collectors. As we grew we began to
attract corporate and industrial customers. You can not begin to imagine
the problems that crop up dealing with these people. It is unbelievable!
While some are good to deal with, still others are nothing but a pain. It
makes a single customer complaining about a price-drop almost a
non-event...a breath of fresh air...in comparison. (The federal government
is the best. They send you a 15 page purchase order but they follow
procedure to the letter and meet their obligations on time!)

My thoughts.
Anyone who wishes to communicate to me, please do so at [EMAIL PROTECTED]
as list-posts come to my college office and I am away much of the summer.

[meteorite-list] Top Quailty Specimens on Ebay Ending

2003-06-30 Thread Jim Strope

Hi All...

My last auctions until the end of July will be ending Tuesday
night. I have put some high quality specimens up for bid.
There are only 5 auctions total. Click on the following link and scroll to
the bottom of the page:

http://members.ebay.com/aboutme/catchafallingstar.com/

1) I am clearing outmy remaining stock of Canyon
Diablo at below wholesale prices. 9 specimens weighing a total of
1.5kg are still only bid up to 20 cents per gram.

2) Don't miss at least looking at the photos of a small
Sikhote-alin meteorite with a double roll over rim (one on each
side of the specimen). I have never seen this feature before on a
Sikhote-alin. The photos are large so that the detail can be clearly
seen.

3) I have a .120 gram fragment of NWA 998 with fusion crust paired up with
a thin section of NWA 998.You won't see too many pieces around this
small with fusion crust.I started it low to giveeveryone an
opportunity to own this exciting meteorite package. By now, you have seen
Steve Schoner's photos of the thin section using his soon to be patented
polarizer. Check out the photos of this piece and the polarized
section.

4) How about a micromount of Johnstown with fusion crust
for $12.50? Now there is a steal.

5) A beautiful piece of NWA 482 with fusion crust. It is not as
thin as the specimens on my webpage so I started it out low and it is still a
bargain at it's current bid. Check out my website of NWA 482 at http://209.238.151.128/nwa482sale.htmand
you can see how low I am getting on this material. Unless I can pick up a
piece from anotherowner or I cut into my personal collection piece, this
is it.

Bid high and bid often!!

Hello List,

I have a 121g Park Forest meteorite that hit a tree and there are some wood fibers still stuck on it. I would like to sell or TRADE it for other locations. If interested in a trade I will entertain offers. Wood fibers can be seen on the right photo here:

 http://members.aol.com/meteorhntr/121.jpg

I also have an assortment of small Brenham individuals, Boxhole individuals and some Williamette pieces for sale. If you are not on my normal list but would like the details of these, let me know and I can email it to you.

One of my Park Forest hunting buddies is consigning some of his small Park Forest slices, small individuals and small end pieces with me. Some of these are amazing. I hope to have pictures available real soon. Email me if you would like a notice when they are available. Weights from 1g to 11g all excellent quality from $19/g to $25/g and well worth it.
