[meteorite-list] Last on Adamana for a while (I hope)
no distribution based on weight within the strewnfield, I see virtually no possibility for Adamana being a part of the Holbrook fall, unless it was previously found in the strewnfield and was later transported by people. The physics of it simply don't work out. With all the numerous explosions, why not another 11 miles? Some parts must have still been ablating after the main explosion to have more explosions. At say, 7 miles per second (just as an aribitrary figure), it wouldn't take long to cover that distance. There is still quite a bit of material still missing off of Haag's aerodynamic piece too. But, certainly not enough to make it come close to being the main mass. Because almost every fall has numerous stages of breakup. Because even within these falls, there is (to my knowledge) always a single strewnfield, with very little deviation from the rule that larger stones fall at the far end and small ones at the other. When you say 'explosions,' you do realize that you are referring to sonic booms in most cases, do you not? The multiple 'booms' often heard during falls are not due to the physical breakup of the meteorite itself, but rather to the stones' breaking of the sound barrier. Thus these multiple detonations heard were probably due to the existence of a number of number of stones that were large enough to retain some of their cosmic velocity for long enough to break the sound barrier in an audible manner. The initial large explosion heard would explain the initial sound effects of the large body either simply passing overhead at a great velocity or possibly it's violent fragmentation, whereas the rumbling heard afterwards can certainly be attributed to the many fragments that must have been large enough just after this explosion to still retain the velocity needed to create sound effects of their own, on a much smaller scale. Huh? In the Holbrook Argus article, it states: The sky was lightly overcast with patches of high floating clouds, but immediately after the explosion a smoky trail similar to the smoke of an automobile's exhaust was visible. The trail disappeared in a LITTLE NORTH of east in direction. Well, Arntz is ENE of Holbrook and Adamana is ENE of Arntz. The strewn field and the railroad tracks are in a ENE orientation. Drawing a line from Holbrook through Arntz takes you right to Adamanain fact, this line can possibly go a little bit north of what is shown as Adamana on a topo map. (next to the railroad tracks where the propane plant is). And I've read other reports stating that it followed a due East path...figures. I wasn't there, and see no way how one can decide between your sources and mine. This path, even if followed to a ridiculous extent (you're going to be hard pressed to find a strewnfield for a stony meteorite that's confirmed to be this long), takes you quite a distance south of Adamana. But this all depends on the accuracy of the reportswho could possibly know. Actually, the Adamana Meteorite was found 11 miles from Arntz (aka Aztec). Not quite all the way to Adamana which is 13 miles as the meteor flies. (I did some remeasuring). And, if the Goodwater theory is correct, then you are only talking about 4 miles. According to the July 26, 1912 article on the Holbrook Argus: There was a heavy explosion similar to that of a heavy blast followed by a fuscillade of smaller explosions which terminated in a thunder-like rumble of approximately two minutes in duration. In Warren Foote's Preliminary Notes of the July 19, 1912 Meteoric Fall at Aztec, Arizona, he writes: It was heard in Concho, St. Joseph, Woodruff, and Pinedale, some 40 miles away. One large explosion was quickly followed by several small ones in rapid succession. The mapped strewnfield was roughly one mile long by a half mile wide. Now it's more like 3 miles long by 1 mile wide and growing. Even Warren Foote mentions this dimension in 1912. The largest stone recovered, weighing in at ~14.5 lbs, was found at the end of this ellipse. HmmmI've never heard that before. I'd like to know where you read/heard that information as that is interesting to me. According to Foote: The large and small stones, according to all answers received, were said to be indiscriminately spread over the ground, without regard to size. The violent disruptions near Holbrook might account for the lack of such a separation The possibility that anything made it farther than this stone is great - In recent years, say the last 40, the larger finds that I know of have been about in the center of the known field and on both sides of the tracks. I and others have found many smaller ones further north and east of these larger stones. I would like to know where the main mass was found, but I've never been able to dig that up yet. However, I've never read or heard anywhere that it was found at the furthest point of the field. it wouldn't surprise me too greatly if a 20lber was found another quarter of a mile on (it could've buried itself on impact, etc), but to say that a smaller stone continued another fifteen miles beyond the known end of the strewnfield is simply ridiculous, With all the numerous explosions, why not another 11 miles? Guess I'm a No-Brainer-Local-Yokel It's funny that Bob Haag told me that it's an L6, but you know otherwise. There is lots of land before it gets to the Petrified Forest. For the longest time, I too, thought that Bob's Stone was a Holbrook meteorite, until... I was able to closely examine the Venus Stone when it was on display at the Tucson Show a couple of years ago. After the awe of having Bob Haag place into my hands the most revered example of a beautiful meteorite had subsided, I started to notice that the exterior was more weathered than I had expected. There wasn't much of a fresh fusion-crust. And then I noticed that around the edges of the nose-cone there were portions of the stone missing. You can imagine my dismay when I discovered that the stone wasn't perfect. And where there were portions missing, that exposed surface was definitely weathered. My jaw dropped when I noticed that there were numerous chondrules standing out in high relief on this weathered surface. I realized immediately that this stone was too low of a petrologic grade and too weathered to be a Holbrook meteorite. You see for yourself in this image: http://nuggetshooter.ipbhost.com/uploads/post-4-1122475180.jpg The fact that the Venus Stone is not an L6, and therefore not related to the Holbrook fall, was for me a no-brainer. Then the idea that the Venus Stone may be part of ANOTHER strewn field started to intrigue me. And the idea that, if another stone could be found/classified/paired to it, then the Venus Stone could be spared the cutting of a type specimen! Now that was even of more interest to me. So, I researched this meteorite. But I discovered that the actual finder and the real locality were already known. And then I was told that the find locality is surrounded by a National Park, The Petrified Forest, which would complicate expanding any possible strewn field. It's not that I would begrudge turning over a meteorite to the Smithsonian, it's just that I'm not sure that even the Smithsonian can remove a meteorite from a National Park. So, I started to lose interest and started to reconcile that this would end up being just another unclassified Arizona meteorite. Hi Bernd and Moni, Wow! Bernd must save everything in his database (which is worth a fortune in itself). Since 1999, I found out that this story is not entirely true. It wasn't found in a landfill as Bob H. mentioned in his catalogue. Instead, it was found in a horse corral when the owners of the ranch were cleaning it out. (So I'm told). They set it on a fence post and a passer-by, (whom will remain nameless for now), asked if he could have it. The owners just gave it to him. He then sold it Haag for the sum stated below. Those owners of the ranch (whose wife works with my girlfriend) sold it a while ago, but they may be foreclosing on it and get the land back. So this is the scenario I'm hoping for. Bob lists his Adamana or Venus Stone as an L6...same as Holbrook. Coincidence? Maybemaybe not. Plotting it on the map looks quite possible to me. HeheheJohnny B should know better than to listen to me. ;-) That story was conveyed to me by a person who lived in Adamana a few years ago. He has since passed away. Also, it's the Goodwater area instead of Goodman. Anyway, this gentleman told me that they used some of the old railroad base as fill for their corral. I really don't think this is the case now as that would be all cinders and the owners tell me differently. Bob Haag told me that the Adamana stone is an L6 and much older than the Holbrook fall. But if it was in a horse corral with horses, seems as if that would age a meteorite quite differently? Still all just speculation for now. OK...my last post on the subject and then I'm back to perpetual lurking. Promise! Sorry I couldn't make it hunting Justin, but days off are scarce these days. 1. Holbrook fall witnesses in 1912 reported 2 detonations...or booms. 2. Adamana is about 8 more miles down the railroad tracks (as the crow flies) from the Holbrook strewnfield 3. Did one of those detonations make the Holbrook fall and the other the Adamana? Beats me, but is quite possible. 4. If according to the GoldShooters forum, someone was spotted specking on the north side of the tracks at Adamana. If so, they are on PRIVATE property. Even on the south side they are on PRIVATE property. I for one, would hate to be caught on the Fitzgerald's land with no permission. 5. Adamana is NOT on the Navajo Reservation (as reported by this forum), but it is close to the Painted Desert/Petrified Forest National Park. So is this person at Adamana or Sun Valley? 6. Sun Valley = Holbrook fall. (No Navajo Reservation involved). 7. Adamana = Adamananot Holbrook or Sun Valley. 8. Is Larry's meteorite part of the Adamana meteorite? Looking at my cast of the Venus Stone there is only a small amount of material missing from the sides. Not a 1+ kilo chunk of fully crusted meteorite. 9. Is Larry's meteorite related to the Adamana meteorite? Maybe and maybe not. If so, it is related like a Campo is from the same fall as the Campos. Good CamposBad Campos. 10. Is Larry's meteorite an Adamana meteorite or a Holbrook meteorite? It was found in the Holbrook strewnfield and there are no missing pieces off of the Adamana meteorite that could possibly be that big and fully crusted. OKI hope I answered some questions. Dave and I talked on the phone while the three of them were still out in the field, and Dave told me it was found in an area that many of us had been over dozens of times. How could that be? Over the years, Dave has noted that wind and water erosion probably come into play. After a good wind or rain storm, artifacts ( indian pottery shards) and meteorites become exposed. They seem to appear in places where they weren't just days before. In actuality, they were there all along but were hidden below a thin layer of sand. Anyone who has ever hunter there has noticed that there are small hillocks of sand mounded up around the bases of some of the indigenous shrubs. My guess is that once these shrubs die and are blown away by the winds (which can last for days and reach speeds of 50 MPH and more) the sand moves on without the shrubs there to hold it in place. Several years ago, Dave, John Blennert and I were hunting in Holbrook. While walking along with Dave, he bent over and picked up a small complete stone of about 2 grams. It was perched atop a small column of soil very much like a golf ball sitting on a tee. The soil (mostly sand) around it had blown away leaving the small stone nearly half an inch above the surrounding soil. Hmm! If he had known what he didn't know then, ... he was wrong! Here is one of the die-hard observations from Foote's notes: One piece larger than an orange fell into a tree in a yard at Aztec cutting the limb off slick and clean and falling to the ground, and when picked up was almost red-hot. According to Foote's notes, the ellipsoidal strewnfield extended west-east but one question has not yet been answered satisfactorily: Were the stones indiscriminately spread over the ground, or were they found sorted according to size (and weight)? How do Larry's find of a lifetime and Maria's finds fit into this puzzle? They say Holbrook is the product of two breakups, one after the other, when the largest fragment then re-fragmented again. Hi Sterling, Yes, according to the original Holbrook Argus newspaper articles right after the fall, there were two detonations. My theory is that the first landed at the Holbrook strewnfield. The second? Have you seen/heard of Bob Haag's Venus Stone? I know exactly where and how it was found and have been waiting permission to search the private property. Even Bob himself doesn't know how or exactly where it was found (well he might now, because I told him the story a while back). The owners of the land and finders of the stone didn't know what they had and just gave it to a passer-by who in turn traded it for enough cash to buy himself a new trailer house. Just a theory though. Dave __ Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

I know he has found some large ones in the past. As far as Bernd's question as to the distribution of large to small stones, I see no pattern whatsoever. Seems to my personal experience, the larger ones are in the middle of the north side. However, there are records of 5 lbs. found on the south side in 1969. (Everet Gibson, I believe). Art, please delete either I or Steve Arnold (Chicago) from this list. I will gladly be the sacrificial lamb in this case. I haven't missed a Tucson show in 8 years, but I think I'll be skipping it from now on in the futurethanks to SSteve. I have no desire to associate with this person there or anywhere else for that matter... either electronically or or in person. He has done nothing but damage this great hobby of ours. If you choose me, I will be grateful as I won't have to open up and actually read all these messages that I delete day in, day out. I will still continue on my meteorite hunting trips and my true friends know how to get in touch me for those REAL meteorite hunts. To put it mildly, I'm sure some will be relieved to see me go. In the book, there was a picture of Charlie standing in front of his house/cabin, but no picture of the fireball. Now that I've read Kevin's book (which is very interesting reading, Kevin. Hey Geoff, I think we have our new Jackass Award Winner for next year. Very disrespectful story indeed. S. Ray DeRusse wrote: Greetings List; Well, imagine our surprise when we read the thread below. But it matters not much since in my view this award has very little meaning attached to it because of the group handing it out. Was there some sort of election or nomination procedure involved or posted somewhere? How does this little favoritism scheme and showering of affection work for a group who even his colleague has bad mouthed him this way. Did you include the Dean's viewpoint ? Or did you gather together willy nilly to keep misconduct and racism a fertile nesting ground in planetary science? We're going to make a special Jackass of the Year certificate for the person who stole the award, and we'll leave it out on the table next year, so be sure to steal that too. Greetings Gas Guzzlers, I drive a 1997 GMC Sierra 4x4 full size extended cab truck which is basically the same as a Chevy. It has a 5.7 Liter Vortex V-8, Auto-trans. and gets 22 mpg on the highway (with the A/C off...about 20 mpg with it on). Around town or off-roading for meteorites I'm sure it drops down to 15-16mpg. I think this gets my vote for Post of the Week! Thanks to Dave for offering to share his Soggy Bottom-Boggy-Bottom meteorites with us. Uh.speaking of that EX of yours Dave.uhdo you have a phone number for her;-) No prob Juanit's: 666-666-just leave a massage. ;-) May the Creek be with You! Incidentally, all my meteorites ( er.uhriver rocks), are guaranteed to have a Neon Flux value of -1.6 Nfx. That means that the solar/stellar grain value guarantees that they all have seen a bit on sunshine in their lifetime. All of my terrestrial stones are so clean that NASA wanted to know how I kept all terrestrial impurities out of my Soggy-Bottom Stones. Well, that's a question only George W. himself can answer...maybe Joel Warren if we are lucky. NASA brought all of their stones back to Earth using a clean capsule, but we found our CRAP (Chondrule Rampant Anal Peridot) lying in a wash and is much freer from contamination than those from the NASA ventures which cost billiions of dollars. Ours were there for a few billion years prior soaking in a slight Texas sewage mixture just for the taking...AKA...Soggy Creek. Absolutely pristene and free from all contaminants. There are NO contaminants from our water source either terrestrial or extra-terrestrial. The stellar grains (which we are numero uno in search engines) specifically states that these River Rocks are from some other place other than Texas. Therefore they must be lunar or martian since we are the neon isotope of the UNITED STATES OF TEXAS!!! I came down with a bad cold towards the end of the show, so apologies to those I missed and those I did not get to say goodbye to. Special thanks -- as always -- to the Denver gang, including: Mike and Bill Jensen, Fred Hall and family, Anne Black, Dan Wray et al, for being such excellent hosts. Also to Blaine and Blake Reed for hospitality above and beyond in their showrooms, and to the mighty Edwin E.T. Thompson who is a first class bartender and mixes one heck of a good margarita! I took a few photos, which I'll try to get around to posting this week. In other news: I know many of you like to make your annual Tucson travel plans way in advance, and so -- after careful consultation with Allan Lang, Michael Blood, and Darryl Pitt -- I would like to provide you with the following teaser of Tucson 2005 show events: FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 4, 2005 [Evening] All are invited to attend the Sixth Annual Meteor Mayhem Birthday Bash Harvey Awards at 8 pm. Location of the event is TBA. After three years at the La Fuente restaurant, we are considering a change of venue for the following reasons: we've outgrown the big room at La Fuente; the nearby Vagabond Inn (formerly the Ramada University and home to Blaine Reed Meteorites) is no longer a show venue; and also because we'd just like to find somewhere a little more interesting and unusual. Details to follow. SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 5, 2005 [Afternoon] Allan Lang will host an auction of exceptional meteorites from the R.A. Langheinrich Meteorite Collection at the elegant Westward Look Resort on Ina Road, Saturday afternoon at 2:30 pm. An online catalog of specimens will be posted at www.nyrockman.com closer to the event. SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 5, 2005 [Evening] Michael Blood's ever-popular People's Meteorite Auction will take place at the VFW Hall, Post 4903, 1150 N. Beverly Avenue on the Saturday evening. This is the same location as the 2004 auction. The new hall was a big hit with everyone due to its spacious event room and full cash bar. An online catalog of specimens will be posted at www.michaelbloodmeteorites.com closer to the event. SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 6, 2005 [Morning] Darryl Pitt's Macovich Collection meteorite auction will return to the sunny InnSuites lawn after a one year hiatus, on the Sunday morning. An online catalog of specimens will be posted at www.macovich.com closer to the event. SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 6, 2005 [Afternoon] Allan Lang and colleagues present a very special free event: You are invited to meet Apollo astronaut, moon walker, and celebrated geologist Dr. Harrison Jack Schmitt when he appears in person at the Westward Look Resort on the Sunday afternoon. Details: http://www.nyrockman.com/tucson-2005.htm The 2005 Tucson Gem and Mineral show opens in just about four months from today, so start saving your pennies! Finally, Steve Arnold IMB and I will be very happy with a couple of large, thin slices of the new Russian pallasite for those who absolutely feel the need to bring us birthday gifts. Re: [meteorite-list] update on dos cabezes
What you did with Bob Verish's Nevada Meteorite Puzzle was criminal! IMHO. I sure hope no one ever sells anything like that again. DNAndrews wrote: They are all on the list. Re: [meteorite-list] Fire ball spotted!
Dear Comcast Mail, Could you please repair you identity in your email program to reflect who you really are, Bob? Thanks, Dave Comcast Mail wrote: Hello list, This evening driving home from work I spotted a meteor that appeared to fall vertically a bit east of Plainfield Illinois. It wasnt a big fireball . more of a thin line, but died out approx 20 Degrees from the surface of the earth. I wondered if there was any way to determine the mass of such a fireball.
