the convention on other mirror lists has been for something like:
[EMAIL PROTECTED] - restricted posting (e.g only by the apache
mirror maintainers and core/developers). very low volume, only informational
posts (e.g new releases)

[EMAIL PROTECTED] - discussion list for mirror admins
Just getting the new mirrors, mirror X unavailable for the next few

in my opinion.

I think that putting 2 lists is too much for now, because there is
only very few discussions anyway. If after all we see that there is
effectivelly a need for another list, nothing will prevent us from
creating it later.

I can confirm that http access did not work. FTP access works, though.

I restarted apache and HTTP access is now working again.
However it seems, that apache2 with mpm-worker, linked against
libthr has issues on FreeBSD 5.2-CURRENT. So it could be
hanging soon again.

I guess I have to return to a prefork-apache, or try worker linked
against libpthread.

In this case, please accept my apologies for the early
request for re-addition. I guess I have to sort this out
first. Please postpone the re-addition until my notice.

Sorry for the hassle.

Problem with one of the mirrors

I placed one of the JSTL 1.1.1 release source bundles here:
/x1/www/www.apache.org/dist/jakarta/taglibs/standard/source

The following mirror threw a 403 and did not resolve the links properly:
http://mirrors.combose.com/apache/jakarta/taglibs/standard
That mirror is not following the recommendations listed here:
http://www.apache.org/info/how-to-mirror.html
I have copied the mirror contact on this message, so hopefully they will
fix the problems.

But as an Apache project, you should be pointing your downloaders at the
target of the symlink. You should do this not only because it eliminates
this particular problem, but also because if you point a downloader at the
most recent release, it is usually better to give them a 404 if the mirror
is out of date, rather than giving them an old version. If you point them
at the symlink, they will get whatever version is on the mirror,
regardless of how out of date it is.

Now, it appears that jakarta-taglibs is simply dumping people in the
taglibs/ directory and letting them browse to their desired software. I
understand that makes things much simpler for you, but it is not the
optimal method of using the mirrors. It is preferable to provide specific
links from your binindex.cgi to the particular software distributions.
This requires greater maintenance on your part, but is generally much
clearer for downloaders and it avoids any problems with misconfigured
mirrors. Plus it allows you to provide direct links to the php and md5
signatures on www.apache.org to ensure integrity.

We have not, in the past, kicked off mirrors for configuration problems
such as this one. But since we have lots of US mirrors, I could be
convinced to do so if people feel strongly about it.

Joshua.

get all the people using rsync to update to the latest version, e.g rsync
2.5.5 and make sure that is also running on the server.

also consider lowering the timeout, perhaps to 600

lastly, please consider making two different sharesets available - one
for general mirrors and the other for 'tier1' mirrors who can also
onfeed to others in their region.

lastly, there are a huge number of apache mirrors - much more than
most other projects that i know of so the default limit might be
quite low if all of these are syncing from a single site (the apache
master site)

perhaps if each region were given a time period to rsync, then you can
roughly predict the traffic size. e.g. each region should rsync between
8am-noon at their own timezone, not 8am-noon GMT.

No, but perhaps I haven't been clear about the problem. This isn't a
question of www.apache.org being over capacity. This is a question of a
single client coming in and making multiple rsync connections until it
fills up all sockets. I have no idea why the clients are doing this, but
it probably is some very badly programmed script. The weird thing is that
is happening over and over again from multiple clients all over the world.

not anymore..

any chance of getting an update on how the mirroring side of apache is
going in the interim - and what the plan is for the direction we're
moving ?

from the feedback we get, our apache mirror users want to see:

o a replicated apache.org site which lets them browse things like
documentation

o local downloads of apache source/binaries - the ability to stay within a
mirror
  once you have picked it.

one of the things that annoyed them was when they went to our mirror and found
themselves following a link that went back to apache.org and then it never
linked back. we've tried to address that but it's more of a structural issue
than anything we do with rewrites..

I noticed that www.apache.org no longer
allows downloads, but requires the use of mirrors instead. Unfortunately,
it looks like many of the mirror sites are misconfigured for serving *.msi files
for the windows platform. These are being sent as text/plain, which in my
opinion, will give many users problems. You may want to notify your
mirrors to fix this, to help avoid confusion among the windows users.

Apache.org mirrors: how-to-mirror update

2003-01-20 Thread Joshua Slive
Hello mirrors,

I have made two small changes in the how-to-mirror document that you
should take note of:

1. We are now requesting that mirrors do an update-check at least once a
day. When using rsync this should not result in any substantial increase
in bandwidth usage, but it should allow us to more effectively use our
mirrors in distributing recent releases.

2. I have added a hint on how to deal with symlinks. Our distribution
directories make extensive use of symbolic links. Therefore it is highly
recommended that you use the -l option to rsync and have an Options line
that includes SymLinksIfOwnerMatch (or FollowSymLinks). If, for some
reason, you are not able to allow symlinks on your mirror, then please
change your rsync options to use -L instead of -l. This will create a
copy of the linked file in place of the link.

Recent tests show that the majority of mirrors are already doing both of
these things, but it would be great if you could each make a quick check
to ensure you are included.

The full document is available at
http://www.apache.org/info/how-to-mirror.html

Thanks.

Joshua.

directed to the best possible mirror.

Please let me know if you see any problems.

slive 2003/01/13 17:39:03

  Modified:docs/dyn/mirrors mirrors.cgi
  Added: docs/dyn/mirrors GeoIP.so
  Log:
A couple significant changes to the dynamic mirror selection script:

  1. Use GeoIP to select the nearest mirror rather than relying
on DNS country code. We should get much better matches this
  way.

  2. Do a pre-scan of the mirror database to see if the selected
country has any mirrors. If it doesn't, fall back to the US.

[Fwd: Incorrect MIME Types set on Mirrors]

2002-10-28 Thread Joshua Slive
The following message details a configuration problem in some of our
mirrors. Specifically, .msi files are being delivered with the
mime-type text/plain.

Mirror owners, could you please check your configuration to make sure
you deliver .msi files with the correct mime type. There are several
ways you can do this:

1. If you follow the configuration instructions at
http://www.apache.org/info/how-to-mirror.html
you will not have this problem. There is an .htaccess file in
/dist/httpd/ that sets the appropriate mime-type. With AllowOverride
set correctly in httpd.conf, you will pick up that .htaccess and
get the right configuration.
2. Add
AddType application/octet-stream .msi
to your httpd.conf or to mime.types.
3. Change your DefaultType directive to application/octet-stream
(but that may lead to other problems).
Thanks for your help in delivering the Apache Software to the world!
Joshua.

Hi,
Not sure who to report this to, so thought I would start with the
authors of the mirror page.
Several of your mirrors are using text/plain mime types on .msi
installer files. This causes Mozilla, Netscape 6/7, and other Gecko
based browsers to display the content rather than download it when
clicking on the link.
For example, epix.net, tux.org and ibiblio.org are configured
incorrectly as text/plain. They should report application/octet-stream.
Can you pass the word to your mirror admins and ask them to configure
the mime types on all their content correctly?
Thanks,
Bob

  Log:
  Remove dead mirrors.
Definition: Dead mirror = any http mirror that has not picked up
httpd-2.0.40 a week after its release, and any mirror that is
inaccessible to me on two consecutive tries several days apart.
  Exceptions:
  - I have not tested the ftp mirrors, but I have removed ftp mirrors
that are parallel to dead http mirrors
  - One site http://mirror.aarnet.edu.au/pub/apache/dist/ is marked
in the mirrors listing as being innaccessible from outside of
Australia. That makes me rather uncomfortable, but I have left it
for now. If any Aussies want to test it for me, that would be

I just tried your http mirror and the most important part (the dist/

Also as a note Riccardo I would recomend that you update to the latest version

what you said does make sense.. hmm. maybe i'll also try to run up an

some suggestions for apache mirrors

2001-02-09 Thread jason andrade

Hi,

a couple of suggestions/queries about the apache web server.

o can we please get the absolute line in index.html changed
  from:

  httpd.apache.org/

  to:

  /httpd.html

all the apache mirrors have this file, so this way all the
mirrors don't throw people back to apache.org.

o can we have a place on the main page with which we can
indicate where it's being hosted ? for example, i'd
like to let people know that planetmirror.com is hosting
  the current apache mirror

o can we get rsync access to any/all of the following apache
  projects ?

  XML-Apache
  Jakarta
  Java-Apache
  mod_perl
  PHP
  Apache_TCL

I am happy to run up a separate virtual server for each of
these apache.org. If they are run by people outside the
`core' apache support area, even a name/contact email would
  be useful to approach them.

  i don't even know what some do - i can't access php.apache.org
  for example

-jason
