Re: New mirror apache.officepark.ru
Dear Erik et all, I have added FTP as well: ftp://apache.officepark.ru You may add it to the list of mirrors for Russia. For anyone intended to become a mirror and willing to estimate the resources needed, you may probably consider the following data. The data are for Russia, but probably if you take into account the number of Internet users in your country vs. Russia and number of Apache mirrors for your country vs. Russia, you may come up with some rough figure. Average downloads from http://apache.officepark.ru: 1 GB a day % ofdownloads from inside of Russia: 99.94% Number of Apache mirrors in Russia: 3 Number of Internet users in Russia: 14M Thanks, Denis - URL of mirror: http://apache.officepark.ru - Country where the mirror is located: Russia - Contact email address: [EMAIL PROTECTED] - Update frequency: every 6 hours (at 1, 7, 13, 19 MSK) - Rsync repository used: rsync.eu.apache.org - Approximate bandwidth: 100 Mbps - I have followed the recommended configuration for my mirror (yes/no): yes Thanks,Denis

Hmm, the problem is that http://www.apache.org/dist/ant/ant-current-bin.zip is a valid resource whereas http://apache.tagcon.net:90/ant/ant-current-bin.zip yields a 404 error. Since this is a mirror it should be identical. For example, we're sending users via pages like http://httpd.apache.org/download.cgi directly onto the mirrors and a missing file (or replaced by one with a .lnk extension) will just confuse them. No difference at all other than protocol. In fact, I really don't care too much about FTP mirrors. We add them to our list, but we highly prefer HTTP. There is really almost nothing of interest on www.apache.org. The interesting stuff is contained on the project websites (httpd.apache.org, jakarta.apache.org, etc). Unfortunately, we do not have a good infrastructure in place to allow the mirroring of those sites. But since almost all our bandwidth usage comes from downloads, providing mirrors of apache-dist is a great way to help Apache. Joshua.

Re: new mirror request
Steven, Thanks for your contribution, but we will need to decline to list your mirror. A typical US Apache mirror sees over 2 gigabytes per day in traffic. A DSL line will not be able to sustain that. See, for example: http://mirrors.xtria.com/awstats/awstats.pl?config=mirrors.xtria.com (In addition, your mirror does not answer from where I am. That's not too bad at all. Sounds correct to me. You could even have Google do the calculation: http://www.google.com/search? q=%285+gigabyte+%2F+%2860*60*24%29%29+in+megabit and it also says 0.474074074 (Mbit per second) Multiply that by 22 US HTTP mirrors and you get around 10Mbit for all US mirrors put together. I would have thought it would be more than that, but I suppose it is possible. Wow... but to get a better image of the total bw consumption for a given set of mirrors (e.g. the US ones) we should have more statistics/data. This was just 1 out of 22, though the result sounds reasonable. Is my math correct? see above ;- Cheers, Erik Joshua.
