Can't boot up on -current of thursday
For the first time in 14+ years I cant boot up. I compiled -current yesterday but didnt reboot then. Rebooting today after the probe line Spkr0 at pcppi0 I get Usbd_free_xfer: xfer=0xff087bb44c30 not free And hangs. So, I booted the previous kernel and got the same message. Other kernels give the same message. Bsd.rd did come up however. This is a w541 thinkpad. I'm going to install on an external disk, but have others seen this? Given multiple kernel failures I fear hardware problems. And of course I dont have other working hardware with me so I have to deal with that to get comparison systems up. Thanks for any clues. --STeve Andre'

It doesn’t do much in the way of explaining anything, just a lot of “put this here”, “put that there”. I used https://frozen-geek.net/openbsd-email-server-1/ (and the second part) when I was migrating from Solaris (for reasons — I’ve had mailservers running on Solaris since about 1992, when it was SunOS) to OpenBSD (hosted on Vultr; I’ve been using OpenBSD since 2.6 or so, mostly for firewalls). I would argue that this is better from the standpoint of explaining why things are the way they are (in the doc), with examples, and, even though it was a little out of date, I found it easy to understand the underlying concepts pretty easily (granted, as I’ve said, I’ve been running mail servers forever, but OpenBSD brings some interesting differences (mostly in PF-enabled routing of connections). Of course, how to docs tend to be a personal thing… Now to stop dragging my heals on upgrading from 6.3 -> 6.4. . . Sean

In practice, this usually happens when the host system comes out of suspension/hibernation. Re: clocksource tsc sometimes not available within debian vm on OpenBSD 6.4
I have the same issue and have been using this driver. It sets the correct time every 5 seconds. For this purpose, this solution is a hack, but, I could not figure out a better solution. https://github.com/voutilad/virtio_vmmci/issues/1 Also, I noticed that vm clock would be very slow. It loses 28 minutes for every 30 minutes. Another thing, watch out regarding tsc=unreliable kernel command line option, the vm is getting unresponsive with it after an hour or so.

Thanks to everybody who answered my post. Even those who rose their finger at me for posting this to the list. I've sent a note to Thomas Dwyer with a heads up on this outdated tutorial, and asked if it's possible to get an update. It's a shame good work like this is of no use anymore. According to my opinion, it's well written and easy to follow. /Hasse

I think there's possibly something slightly off in chromium's routines, because the drop-off happens BEFORE you even start any audio, thus pointing to chromium always initializing the audio output even if it's not going to play anything... ... which is a minor peeve when you're actually using audio for other things.

I mailed meinberg whether they give out datasheets to their products so that I can modify the driver. If I don't manage to make the new one working, is there interest by german or european developers to take on the hardware or money to buy their own device? I don't know if the original umbg(4) driver author is still at OpenBSD... I probably won't get a reply by monday, so we'll see then. Regards, -peter
clocksource tsc sometimes not available within debian vm on OpenBSD 6.4
Hi misc, I'm running OpenBSD 6.4 stable on my notebook and wanted to play around with docker within debian VMs. 1 created 3 debian (stretch) VMs (2nd and 3rd are just copies and modified later). I had some trouble getting docker (containerd) running. It was always using 100% CPU and I didn't know, why. Found out it made many "clock_gettime" syscalls and found a thread, that setting the clocksource to "tsc" within the VM would improve performance. And, indeed, setting the clocksource to "tsc" fixes the containerd problem. But the main problem is, that sometimes the "tsc" clocksource is not available within the VM. Until now, only 2 of the 3 debian VMs have the "tsc" clocksource available, if all 3 are running. If I stop one of the 2 VMs that have "tsc" available and restart the one that did not have it, that one *then* has the "tsc" available. But not always. So this looks somehow pretty random to me. So here is an example, when "tsc" is not available root@debian2-vm:~# dmesg | grep tsc [0.00] tsc: Fast TSC calibration failed [0.00] tsc: Unable to calibrate against PIT [0.00] tsc: No reference (HPET/PMTIMER) available [0.00] tsc: Marking TSC unstable due to could not calculate TSC khz root@debian2-vm:~# And here it is (on the same VM after one or more reboots) root@debian2-vm:~# dmesg | grep tsc [0.00] tsc: Fast TSC calibration failed [0.00] tsc: Using PIT calibration value [0.00] tsc: Detected 15521.837 MHz processor [1.948708] clocksource: tsc: mask: 0x max_cycles: 0x1bf7a091b1e1, max_idle_ns: 881591361965 ns [1.948709] clocksource: Switched to clocksource tsc [2.797715] clocksource: timekeeping watchdog on CPU0: Marking clocksource 'tsc' as unstable because the skew is too large: [2.797716] clocksource: 'tsc' cs_now: 2cd3e49b586 cs_last: 2cbb8a34d2c mask: root@debian2-vm:~# Is this known and possibly fixed in current? I can't open web.telegram.org in the Chromium
Hi @misc ! I need to use Telegram as my main messenger. I'm trying open https://web.telegram.org in the Chromium (-current). But browser crashed. I have installed firefox and surf - everything work fine. The site opens and web version works fine. Can someone open https://web.telegram.org in the current version of the Chromium? How to fix it? I don't want to use additional browser for Telegram only... Thank You. It used to be in ports but was removed because there's nothing unusual about the setup for running it on OpenBSD and with this sort of web application you really want to be using the standard update mechanism to get security fixes quickly. You'll probably find it simpler to use a web server other than httpd(1) to start with (nginx or apache httpd), so that the config guides you'll find are more relevant. When you have it working then you can start translating the config..

Indeed! Heck yeah, that fixed it here! WOOHOO Thanks. That is probably sndiod(8) doing its default behavior of trying to avoid clipping by reducing volume when multiple things are playing. See the -w option in the sndiod man page.
Re: Virtual Web Server
I would suggest to analyze the problems you have with wordpress on httpd. Just a few thoughts (shot in the dark): "unable to post content" -> write permissions? "crop images" -> do you have all the php libraries installed that wordpress needs? What is needed to crop images? gd? image-magick? check wordpress requirements. A good start is to see httpd's error log. Also see the output of phpinfo(). Installing linux to host wordpress will not magically solve problems ;-) On Fri, Mar 08, 2019 at 12:09:22PM +, daffodil...@protonmail.ch wrote: > I installed OpenBSD on my home server with the intention of running > Wordpress and some other things (maybe a TOR relay, I don't know). > After installing, I used some online guides to get PHP and MySQL as > well as httpd (not apache) set up. Meinberg Funkuhren DCF77 clocks
Hi, I'm wondering if this particular USB clock is supported in OpenBSD. https://www.meinbergglobal.com/english/products/usb-dcf77-clock.htm it's predecessor is the USB5131 model, which is supported under the umbg(4) driver. But this one is newer it seems, anyone got this working or am I going bleeding edge if I want to buy one? I either want to put it on my EdgeRouter-8 which has no RTC or on a NUC which does have RTC. I'm going to guess you are using either httpd(8) or the nginx package as your web server. If so, you will need to create a copy of /etc/resolv.conf as /var/www/etc/resolv.conf. Both web servers run in a chroot(2) at /var/www. After creating the directory and copying the file, restart your phpXX_fpm daemon. It was just a guess, of course, because you didn't state what you're using, or what you've done.
Virtual Web Server
I installed OpenBSD on my home server with the intention of running Wordpress and some other things (maybe a TOR relay, I don't know). After installing, I used some online guides to get PHP and MySQL as well as httpd (not apache) set up. But after setting up Wordpress, I was getting some errors I was unable to debug (unable to post content, unable to crop images, etc.) Now I'm thinking instead to run Linux in a VM to host Wordpress but keeping OpenBSD on the machine as the base operating system. What settings do I need to alter in order to serve http and https from a VM? And is this a normal kind of setup or should I work harder at just debugging what is wrong with Wordpress on the OpenBSD setup?
Possible sasyncd memory leak ?
Hi all, We have a triple redundant vpn gateway setup with sasyncd running and tons of tunnels, about 1000 flows. Looking at the graph of memory usage, you can clearly see that something is sucking up the memory. The graph can be viewed here: https://pasteboard.co/I4sjzQ8.jpg Looking at the ps, sasyncd shows huge memory consumption: USER PID %CPU %MEM VSZ RSS TT STAT STARTED TIME COMMAND _isakmpd 33560 0.0 17.0 699264 708508 ?? S 26Feb19 6:58.81 /usr/sbin/sasyncd It only happens on the master node. Slaves do not show such a behavior. There is nothing about sasyncd in the logs. After sasyncd restart memory consumption is minimal, but tends to grow. Is it normal ? or am I missing something ? Best regards M.K.

sound volume reduction - chromium
Hello, Does anyone observe some sound volume reduction when chromium is displaying some specific tabs? I am using mpv in xterm with some internet radio, when I point chromium to some tabs (with or without multimedia in them, I can't figure out for the moment) the sound volume is dropping a little but noticeable and it is coming back to normal when I close chromium or the offending tabs. I can see this even in youtube tab, whenever I open another tab with multimedia in it. Thank you.
Console keyboard layout gets reset if you unplug the keyboard
On an amd64 running OpenBSD 6.4 in the console: doas kbd us.dvorak You will find the layout is not dvorak anymore and is qwerty instead. This also is a problem if you don't have a keyboard plugged in on boot. The /etc/kbdtype containing "us.dvorak" gets ignored when plugging in a USB keyboard and will default to qwerty. -- -alfred
