[WikimediaMobile] Wikipedia v6.2 for iOS published to app store

2019-02-21 Thread Joshua Minor
Hello mobile wikimedians,

The Wikimedia Foundation's iOS team is excited to announce our next major
release is up on the app store here:
https://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=324715238&mt=8

This is our first release focused on major improvements to the editing
features of the app. In this version we focused on the core wikitext
editing experience. We added:

   - Syntax highlighting (based on CodeMirror 5) with for our accessible
color themes -- edit in dark mode!
   - Wikitext toolbars for inserting markup and formatting
   - Line numbers and majorly improved spacing and wrapping (see templates
   and their variables easily!)
   - Find-in-page within the wikitext
   - Undo and redo
   - After publishing a section, you're returned to that section in the
   reading view
   - Look and feel of editing and publishing updated to match the rest of
   the app

This version makes some other improvements, and also sunsets our support
for Wikipedia Zero, but we're most excited about these new editing tools.
Let us know what you think! We've got a lot more good stuff coming for
editors, and your feedback will make whats next even better. If you'd like
to sign up to help beta test future versions, you can now sign up directly

[WikimediaMobile] Wikipedia app for iOS v6.2 first beta released

2018-12-27 Thread Joshua Minor
Hello mobile Wikipedians,

The Wikimedia Foundations' iOS team has released a first beta of our next
major release (v6.2) to TestFlight. This release is focused on a major
upgrade to the wikitext editing experience. Key features include:

   - wikitext syntax highlighting with accessible colors based on theme
(edit in night mode!) [currently based on the English configuration, but
supporting all CodeMirror configurations in upcoming builds. the final
version will also include the option to toggle highlighting and themes off]
   - improved readability with improved fonts, spacing, wrapping and line
   numbers
   - a mobile-first toolbar for inserting formatting, basic links and
template syntax among other basic editor needs
   - undo/redo
   - long press menu on selected text to apply basic editing tools (make
   highlighted text bold, for example)
   - after publishing an edit, get returned to the changed section in the
   article, rather than the beginning

This build is a bit rougher than we'd usually consider a beta, but there's
so much great functionality in there we wanted you to try it sooner than
later. You'll notice some tool bar buttons disabled for now (including a
planned "find in page" feature), and you will run into some bugs. Please
let us know about those bugs, but mostly we want to hear about the overall
experience and what needs we missed or what might need improvement. For
long time editors who are also app users we're particularly interested in
hearing from you.

We'll be running more formal user testing in January, but we're excited to
put this initial version in your hands to play with over the holidays.

*To sign up for the beta please tap here: *

Happy holiday editing,
Josh Minor

[WikimediaMobile] Wikipedia app v6.1 for iOS released to app store

2018-10-31 Thread Joshua Minor
Hello mobile Wikimedians,

The Foundation's iOS team today published an update for the Wikipedia app
to the App Store. This is the first in a series of updates focused around
editing features and making a great app experience for editing, as well as
reading. It also includes a good number of performance and bug fixes.
Download the update here:
https://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=324715238&mt=8

The main feature in this version is the ability to edit Wikidata based
"short descriptions" directly from the app, almost identical to the feature
released on Android last year. It is available on all Wikipedias except
English[1].

Thanks,
Josh Minor
Product Manager, Wikipedia for iOS

[1] - As on Android this feature is disabled for English Wikipedia articles
due to community decision to override the shared descriptions with a local
keyword. Read more on how this works for English here:

[WikimediaMobile] Wikipedia v.5.7.3 released to App Store

2017-12-20 Thread Joshua Minor
Hello,

Now, in the app store, version 5.7.3 of Wikipedia for iOS:
https://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/view
Software?id=324715238&mt=8

In addition to a lot of small bug fixes, this version includes a handful of
appearance improvements:

   - New "Black" reading theme, perfect for saving power on OLED devices
   - Appearance option to have info boxes open by default (thanks to
   volunteer Aclaussen!)
   - Hiding of the top navigation bar while reading, to make more
   uncluttered reading space

You should also see faster article loading and less data use, thanks to
lazy loading of images and other page loading improvements. Now images are
only downloaded when about to be displayed (or saved). Extra big thanks to
the Readers Web and Android teams who pioneered this change for all our
users. With this release all the mobile Wikipedia experiences share this
great improvement [1].

Extra big thanks to contributors Aclaussen and Onlyrandomness for their
code patches. And our usual thanks to our testers and translators.

[WikimediaMobile] Wikipedia for iOS named an Editor's Choice

2017-10-27 Thread Joshua Minor
Hello mobile Wikimedians,

Today Apple named the official Wikipedia app an Editor's Choice. This is
the highest level of recognition for an app by Apple, and gets us a special
badge and placements in the App Store. In their email to me about the
change they explained that they wanted to recognize the great improvements
to the app on iOS and particularly our work on accessibility over the last
couple years.

This is great recognition for the team's and volunteer contributor's work,
but more importantly, puts Wikipedia in its rightful place as a first class
citizen on the App Store. Its an honor to build an app for something as
beloved and awesome as Wikimedia, and we're so gratified to see our efforts
to make the Wikipedia app beautiful, and usefu,l to iOS users acknowledged
like this.

[WikimediaMobile] Wikipedia v5.6.0 for iOS released to App Store

2017-08-07 Thread Joshua Minor
Hello mobile Wikimedians,

Today we've released a *major* update of the Wikipedia app to the app
store: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/wikipedia/id324715238?mt=8

This update includes our most requested feature: dark reading mode!

Its just one of several new appearance options, including dark and sepia
color modes, image dimming and convenient screen brightness control.

This release also includes a new "On this day" card in the Explore feed for
four initial languages (English, German, French and Swedish). On this day
is built on the rich anniversary pages[1] and selected anniversaries[2]
available on many Wikipedias, to highlight important events that occurred
on this date. Tap through for a timeline view and swipe back through
history!

The update also includes a small sticker pack for iMessage. We worked with
the Wikimedia Foundation's Communications team to create a set of public
domain stickers[3], so you can send wiki memes in texts. Now you can tell
your friends "citation needed!" in a group chat :)

Thanks to our testers and translators. And mega thanks to users yangand and
julbod for their code patches.

Thanks,
Josh Minor

[WikimediaMobile] Wikipedia v5.6.0 for iOS released to TestFlight

2017-07-24 Thread Joshua Minor
Hello mobile Wikimedians,

Today we've released a beta of the Wikipedia app to TestFlight which
includes our most requested feature: dark reading mode!

Tap through for a timeline view and swipe back through
history!

The beta also includes a small sticker pack for iMessage. We worked with
the Wikimedia Foundation's Communications team to create a set of public
domain stickers[3], so you can send wiki memes in texts. Now you can tell
your friends "citation needed!" in a group chat :) These stickers will be
coming to other social media platforms as well, but iOS beta testers get to
try them out first!

Thanks again to all our testers. If you'd like to become a tester please
sign-up here:

2017-06-20 Thread Joshua Minor
Hello mobile Wikimedians,

The iOS team is excited to announce that v5.5.0 of the Wikipedia app for
iOS is now available in the app store:
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/wikipedia/id324715238?mt=8

This is a MAJOR update with tons of bug fixes and improvements. Highlights
include:

   - New Places tab lets you find Wikipedia articles about places near you,
or across the globe. Use maps to find the most interesting articles next
door, or anywhere your curiosity takes you.
   - Quick search box on the Explore screen lets you easily access the
search menu to find the information you need, now.
   - Streamlined "In the News" design, makes it easier to learn more about
   what’s happening around the world.
   - Updated Explore design makes discovering new content even easier.
Added "infinite" scroll so you can catch up on what you missed just by
   scrolling down.
   - Clear app caches from the Settings menu, to reclaim storage the
Wikipedia app takes on your device.
   - Overall performance improvements mean faster loading and smoother
   scrolling

As usual I'd like to thank our beta volunteers, translatewiki localizers
and all the folks that participated in user feedback rounds. I also want to
particularly thank volunteer contributor NHarateh for her several patches
on this version!

Thanks,

[WikimediaMobile] Wikipedia app v5.5.0 for iOS released to beta

2017-06-07 Thread Joshua Minor
Hello,

The Wikipedia iOS app team is excited to announce the first beta of our
next big update. TestFlight users should be able to install this update
now. If you'd like to join our beta test group (please!) sign up here:
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfW7zFnUDYABvHLWlFclZ7OJEK82WjVIjs_dSzwIDM0Hnz31A/viewform

==What's New?==
This is a major update chock-a-block with new and improved features:

   - New Places tab lets you find Wikipedia articles near you or across the
globe. Use maps to find the most interesting articles next door, or
   anywhere your curiosity takes you.
   - Quick search box on the Explore screen lets you get right to search
for the answers to your burning questions.
   - Improved "In the News" design, to make it easier to learn more about
   whats happening in our world.
   - Updated Explore design to make discovering interesting new content
even easier. Add "infinite" scroll so you can catch up on what you missed
   just by scrolling down.
   - Clear app cache from the Settings menu, to reclaim storage the
Wikipedia app takes up on your device.

==A Note About Places==
The Places feature currently uses the iOS provided Apple MapKit library and
Apple maps. This is not a decision the team made easily, but after much
feedback and research, we believe this is the only option for now. A couple
important notes:

   1. This is only used in the Places tab, as a means of search and
discovery. These maps are NOT used in the encyclopedia itself, and do not
replace, prevent or circumvent work by editors to add open maps to articles
   on wikis.
   2. Our users' privacy is preserved. We don't share what articles you're
reading with Apple, and Apple has put significant technical and legal oomph
into preserving privacy for their built-in maps library.

If you have concerns or questions, please check out the page we wrote
explaining the situation in much more detail[1]. We also welcome your
addition to the Discussion either on wiki, on the task request to replace
Apple Maps[3] or via email.

Hello mobile Wikimedians,

The WMF's iOS team is excited to announce version 5.4.1 of Wikipedia for
iOS is now available on the App Store
!

This version contains no new features but makes significant changes
internally to reduce the resources used by the app. Updating users should
see the app use less disk space, background battery and bandwidth,
particularly users with large histories or large saved page libraries.

Thanks to all the testers who helped us with one last push! Also thanks to

Hello,

The iOS team has recently pushed a release candidate beta of the Wikipedia
app to our TestFlight users.

This version contains no new features, but makes major improvements under
the hood. These changes should result in the app using less resources (disk
space and background battery, especially) and also be faster and more
stable. Although we've pushed a couple betas of this version, we still need
more help testing these important changes.

[WikimediaMobile] Wikipedia app for iOS v5.4.0 updated beta

2017-03-17 Thread Joshua Minor
Hello mobile Wikimedians,

We've just pushed an updated beta of the 5.4.0 version of the Wikipedia app
for iOS. This beta is a release candidate that we hope to publish to the
app store early next week.

This updated beta finishes our work on our new Login system (including two
factor authentication). It also contains a number of bug fixes.

We've also removed the Places feature from this version. We are working on
addressing user research feedback[1] and community concerns[2] with Places,
and in the meantime wanted to get the improvements to log in and other bug
fixes into our users hands without further delay. So, if you liked Places
(as many testers did), it will be back and better than ever, but will not
be included in this version.

[WikimediaMobile] Wikipedia app v5.3.2 released to app store

2016-12-19 Thread Joshua Minor
Hello mobile Wikimedians,

We've just released an update for Wikipedia for iOS to the App Store[1].

This version includes support for iOS's Dynamic Type setting, which allows
users to increase the size of text, not just in articles, but of buttons
and other UI elements. This is a major piece of the accessibility work we
kicked off in October[2], and allows users with poor vision to more easily
navigate and read Wikipedia.

This version also includes a major database upgrade, which should continue
to improve the speed and stability of the Explore feed, Saved pages and
user's local history.

[WikimediaMobile] Wikipedia app v5.3.2 for iOS now in beta

2016-12-08 Thread Joshua Minor
Hello,

Beta testers[1] should now be able to install v5.3.2 of the Wikipedia app
via TestFlight.

This version brings two major updates:
 - Support for variable size text throughout the app, based on the user's
OS level Text Size accessibility setting (aka "Dynamic Type")
 - Improved database, which should result in improved performance and
stability, particularly using the Explore and Saved tabs

Yesterday we also closed our first survey of app users, to better
understand their needs and motivations. We look forward to analyzing those
responses, and hope to share high level results in the next quarter. Many
thanks to the thousands of users who answered our question.

[WikimediaMobile] Wikipedia v5.3.1 for iOS released to App Store

2016-12-02 Thread Joshua Minor
Hello,

A fresh update for the Wikipedia app for iOS is now up on the App Store[1].

This version includes fixes for:
 - App start crashes and hangs
 - Notifications being sent more than once
 - Stability of saving/un-saving articles

It also includes a fix contributed by volunteer stevenschobert allowing
users to use much longer passwords and password managers. Thanks!!!

Additionally, this version includes the ability for us to add announcement
cards to users Explore feed. Also coming soon to Android, this allows us to
communicate more directly with our app users. The first announcement is
running now, and asks users to tell us why they use the app. This is
modeled on the reader motivation study conducted on web[3] , and will help
inform our priorities for future versions. Special thanks to Leila from
Research, as well as the Android and Services teams for helping us launch
this.

[WikimediaMobile] Wikipedia for iOS v5.3.1 beta 1 released

2016-11-28 Thread Joshua Minor
Hello,

Fast on the heals of last weeks major release, we just pushed a first beta
of our next update (v5.3.1) to our TestFlight beta testers. This release
addresses some crash issues with Explore loading/refresh, prevents repeat
pushes of the same notification, and adds Wikidata descriptions for news
items.

Additionally this version adds an Announcement card to the Explore feed.
Similar to the CentralNotice system on the web, this will allow us to
insert short announcements into the Explore feed. The first use of this
will be to ask app users to participate in a quick survey (1 question)
about why they use the app, to help inform our plans going forward.

Hello mobile Wikimedians,

A major update to the Wikipedia app for iOS is now available in the App
Store: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/wikipedia/id324715238?mt=8

Version 5.3.0 includes a long list of improvements and new features,
including:

   - Get rich notifications about topics Trending In the News
   - Improved VoiceOver support for the visually impaired and VoiceOver
   support added to widgets
   - 支援簡繁中文自動轉換 / 支持简繁中文自动转换
   - Support for auto transliteration between Simplified and Traditional
   Chinese for Chinese Wikipedia
   - Switch to RESTBase endpoint for the Explore feed, resulting in faster
load times with less network bandwidth
   - Improved Random article experience to make it easier to fall down the

   - Use 3d touch actions to save and share links from anywhere in the app

[WikimediaMobile] Wikipedia 5.3.0 beta 4 for iOS

2016-11-02 Thread Joshua Minor
Hello mobile Wikimedians,

The WMF iOS app team just pushed an updated beta to our TestFlight channel.

In this beta, we have altered the criteria for when an "In the news" item
should trigger a notification. In our modeling over the summer we expected
our notability criteria[1] to result in 3-5 notifications a week for
English users. However, since the last beta, no items have met the
criteria. By adding to the criteria we hope this will result in slightly
increased rate of notification (like more than 0) without being overly
push-y.

Also added in this update:
 - Updated presentation of citations across tablets and phones
 - Saved articles update character based on current Chinese language setting
 - Fixed crashes for iPad Air 2 and Explore feed loading
 - Other small bug fixes and improvements

Thanks for all your testing and feedback,
Josh Minor
PM, Wikipedia app for iOS

[1] - Basically, that an item be on the Wikipedia's Main page, and the
linked articles have sufficient recent page views to be considered
'trending' in that language. See https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T143050
for the gory details.

Hello,

We all know the vision: All the knowledge. Every single human being.

To achieve this, we need to support users across geographies and languages,

   - Register our Notifications with the OS, so users are correctly asked
for permission and notifications can actually be sent
   - Lots of crash fixes, especially on app launch, iPad and when scrolling
   the Explore feed

Thanks to the many many testers who reported these issues.

If you are not in the beta, but would like to join, please sign up here:

[WikimediaMobile] Wikipedia 5.3.0 for iOS beta release

2016-10-21 Thread Joshua Minor
Hello,
The beta of the next version (5.3.0) of the Wikipedia app for iOS is now
available to beta testers on TestFlight.

This beta includes a few significant improvements:
 - Support for simplified and other Chinese character preferences for zh
Wikipedia
 - Major improvements in the loading and scrolling speed of the Explore
feed, and use of the feed API developed by the Android team[1]
 - Support for widgets on iOS 9
 - In the News items from the Main page now included in the feed (see also
Android)
 - Improved presentation of citations on iPad (phone coming in next beta)
 - Trending In the News push notification…

*About Notifications*
The iOS beta is also piloting a push notification[2] option for users. If
the user is interested, the app will notify them of new In the news items
from their primary language which meet a page view threshold. You can 3D
press the notifications to see more info, or tap through to read more.

This kind of content notification is a new concept for the Wikipedia apps
and we look forward to hearing from you and our users whether we should
keep it, and how to make it better.

*To sign up for the beta,* please go here: https://goo.gl/forms/
ifUKBVGgXzkbNv4q1

*If you are in the beta,* your feedback about the notifications is very
much requested here:

Thanks,
Josh

[WikimediaMobile] Wikipedia app v5.2.1 for iOS released to App Store

2016-09-22 Thread Joshua Minor
Hello mobile Wikimedians,

The Wikipedia iOS app team just released a small update to the app
store[1]. Version 5.2.1 addresses a handful of bugs with our new widgets,
improves responsiveness when swiping back to read previous articles, and
fixes problems saving pages.

It also includes some improved localizations, with expanded coverage from
our always amazing Translatewiki volunteers, and RTL language support in
the widgets.

Thanks,

Re: [WikimediaMobile] Huge App Store Features from Apple!

2016-09-15 Thread Joshua Minor
Hi DJ,

The current build in TestFlight is the same binary as on the store, so you
should be all set.

In this version you do need to have iOS 10 to use the widgets (I recommend
the update in general, as the built in apps have gotten many useful
improvments). If you choose to stick with 9, we plan to add iOS 9 widget
support in our next version (https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T145438).

Let me know if you still don't see the widgets and I can dig in with you
for potential bugs off-list.

[WikimediaMobile] Wikipedia app v5.2.0 for iOS released

2016-09-13 Thread Joshua Minor
Hello mobile Wikimedians,

A new version of the Wikipedia app for iOS was released to the App Store[1]
this morning, alongside Apple's iOS 10 update. This version includes a
number of iOS 10 compatibility features and improvements. We strongly
recommend that users who have updated their OS also update to this version.

This version includes:

   - Today widgets for iOS 10[2]. To add the Wikipedia widgets, go to the
Today screen by swiping right on your lock screen. Then scroll down, tap
Edit and then tap the green pluses next to our icons. We've added two
   widgets:
   - Continue Reading - Readers can now pick up exactly where they stopped
  reading an article.
  - Top Read - You can now see the top-read articles in your primary
  language Wikipedia.
   - Spotlight continuation: type a search in Spotlight, then see the
   results in the app.
   - Fix for Wikipedia Zero to help ensure users know when they are on a
   Zero network.
   - Fix an issue where the previously open article could be lost between
   sessions.
   - Other small bug and crash fixes.

[WikimediaMobile] Wikipedia app for iOS v5.1.1 released, 5.2.0 in beta

2016-09-06 Thread Joshua Minor
Hello mobile Wikimedians,

The Wikipedia iOS app team is excited to announce two releases today.

We released version 5.1.1 to the App Store [1]. This is a small update
which addresses some instability introduced in our last release,
particularly for iPad users.

We also released our upcoming 5.2.0 version to beta testers on TestFlight.
This version is targeted for release alongside the iOS 10 update, and
includes compatibility fixes for iOS 10, as well as 2 new "widgets" for the
Today screen:
 - Continue Reading: pick up right where you left off, right from your
phone's lock screen.
 - Top Read: see the top 3 articles from your primary language, alongside
your agenda, news headlines and weather. Make checking what's trending on
the wiki part of your daily routine, without even needing to open the app.

To enable these widgets you will need to be on the iOS 10 public beta[2].
Once you've updated, go to the bottom of your lock screens "Today" view and
tap "Edit". The two Wikipedia widgets should be available for you to add,
place or remove in your Today view.

If you are not a beta tester, but would like to be, please sign up here[3]
and we will add you to our next update.

As always we appreciate your feedback and testing, particularly from iOS 10
"early adopters."

Thanks,
Josh Minor

[WikimediaMobile] iOS 5.0.6 released to store, 5.1.0 released to beta

2016-08-15 Thread Joshua Minor
Hello mobile Wikimedians,

This morning the WMF's iOS App team released an update to the Wikipedia app
for iOS. This is a minor update to continue to improve stability and
performance, especially for users with large libraries of saved articles.
We also fixed minor issues with language switching for search, added more
informative crash logging, and fixed hieroglyphics in articles.

Again, major thanks to our beta testers and crash reporters who helped us
diagnose our remaining issues.

*Download the update from the app store now[1]!*

Speaking of beta testers, we also pushed our first beta of our next major
update to testers late on Friday. Version 5.1.0 includes improved design
for larger screens on the Explore feed and article reader. It also *adds
Find in Page* to the article toolbar, our most frequently requested feature!

If you are already a beta tester, please check it out on TestFlight,
especially if you are an iPad or iPhone Plus user. If you are not a beta
tester, please sign up here, and you'll be added for our next beta
update[2].

[WikimediaMobile] [Apps] Wikipedia for iOS 5.0.5 released to App Store

2016-07-28 Thread Joshua Minor
Hello mobile wikimedians,

Big day for Wikipedia apps. First, big congrats to the Android team on
today's awesome update!

On iOS, after a long beta testing period[1], focusing on improving
performance and reducing crashes and instability, we've released the 5.0.5
version of Wikipedia to the App Store.

We expect users will see:
 - less hangs or failures to load on the Explore feed
 - full AuthManager support and stable account log in and creation
 - use less device resources, espeically when backgrounded and in our
backups
 - most importantly, less crashes!!

We also fixed over a two dozen other bugs and usability issues, large and
small.

Thanks to our volunteers (particularly thanks to huayu0723, bart-kneepkens
and gregggreg2 for their code contributions, and josve05a for his
invaluable help with OTRS and testing). I also want to thank our beta
testers, who put in extra effort on this version to help us find and
diagnose stability issues.

Thanks,
Josh

[WikimediaMobile] Wikipedia for iOS v5.0.5 beta 4 -- help test

2016-06-28 Thread Joshua Minor
Hello,

As previously posted on list, the WMF's iOS app team has been focused on
improving the performance and stability of the app with our next update[1].
We've made huge improvements under the hood with this version, and we're
optimistic users will see faster article loading and less crashes. But we
still need your help!

If you are a registered beta tester,* please update to the latest version
available on TestFlight now. *Particularly if you use:
 - A device with iOS 8
 - An iPad
 - An older device

...or if you have experienced crashes in recent versions.

We've added a specialized reporting mechanism to help us investigate a
particularly thorny issue.

*If the app encounters this issue it will pop up an email pre-filled out
with diagnostic information. This report is specific to this issue and
provides us logging beyond our normal crash reporting. If this email pops
up for you while using the app, please hit send.* It will be very very
helpful in diagnosing and resolving any remaining issues.

If you are not a tester but would like to get on board and help (please!),
please sign up here:

[WikimediaMobile] Wikipedia v5.0.5 for iOS beta 3

2016-06-22 Thread Joshua Minor
Hello,

On Friday of last week, the Wikimedia Foundation's iOS team pushed a new
version to our beta channel[1]. During this testing we discovered a
regression with tapping images in articles, and have just pushed a very
slightly updated version to TestFlight.

This is our release candidate build for version 5.0.5, and barring any
issues we plan to submit this update to the App Store early next week.

As usual thanks to our volunteer testers for the help and feedback,

[WikimediaMobile] Wikipedia for iOS Update

2016-06-17 Thread Joshua Minor
Hello mobile wikimedians,

*tl;dr Today we pushed a beta for our next version, 5.0.5, to beta testers
with major stability and performance updates under the hood. We’re thinking
about notifications and nearby features, so take a look [7,9] and let us
know what you think.*

== 5.0.5 beta 2 Released ==

As mentioned previously on list, starting with the release of iOS 9.3 and
Wikipedia version 5.0.3, we saw a near doubling of our crash rate. This is
evident in recent app store ratings and reviews, and OTRS reports.

To address this we have focused on updates to core components which have
been sources of significant instability or risk.

In addition to a library architecture change made in 5.0.4 (which has seen
our crash rate reduced) the team has been working hard to transition our
core html rendering component (called a “web view” in app terminology) from
the older Apple “UIWebView” to the more modern “WKWebView”[1]. (WK here
stands for WebKit[2]). Since article display with html is the main function
of the app, this is essentially like putting a new engine in your car. As
with a new engine, this one should not only break down less often, but also
be faster and more resource efficient[3].

== Upcoming Plans ==

With all our planned technical, stability and performance improvements
included in this beta, we’re focusing again on improving the features and
usability of the app. In particular we plan to address user requests to be
able to search within pages, and provide easier access to everyone’s
favorite Random articles. We will also continue to work on making the app
accessible to disabled readers.

We also want to continue to experiment with new ways to engage with the
encyclopedia on mobile devices, as part of the Foundation’s Reach focus in
the recent strategy process[4], and the Reading team’s focus on improving
the encyclopedia experience, trying new mobile-centric modes of interaction
and assessing their effect on repeat app usage[5].

== Feature Wikis ==

===Content Notifications===

In a post on the Wikimedia Foundation blog today[6], I introduced our
initial ideas around notifications. You can also check out our wiki for
more detailed initial concepts for content notifications[7]. Completing an
initial test of notifications is also our teams goal for the upcoming
quarter[8].

===Nearby and Map based browsing===

Building on the existing Android map based experience, and the iOS
compass-based approach, we’re exploring adding add a new tab for searching
and browsing Wikipedia based on location and via a map. Check out our wiki
on the potential features and designs for Nearby on iOS[9].

We welcome your feedback on these features on the relevant talk pages. And
of course we welcome general feedback, suggestions and code contributions
in the usual places: email, IRC (#wikimedia-ios and #wikimedia-mobile) or
wiki[10].

Thanks,

Josh Minor

[WikimediaMobile] Wikipedia v5.0.5 for iOS Beta

2016-05-20 Thread Joshua Minor
Hello mobile Wikimedians,

*TLDR:** if you have experienced crashes with recent versions of Wikipedia
for iOS, please update to the latest iOS (9.3.2). If you're a beta tester
also install the new beta (5.0.5). Then tell us if you still have crashes.*

Since our last feature update (5.0.3) we've seen a notable increase in
crashes and instability in Wikipedia for iOS. We released a hot fix (5.0.4)
which resolved some of the issues, particularly with loading the Explore
feed content. However, we've needed more time to investigate, and work with
Apple and other iOS developers to resolve, the largest source of crashes.

In particular we urge our app users to update to the latest iOS (9.3.2)
released earlier this week. This OS update has improved stability for apps
using Swift, and in our case users should see an elimination of the most
common type of crash.

Today beta testers will also see a first release of v5.0.5 of the app. If
you are a beta tester, please download the latest update from TestFlight.
If this new version crashes:

   - Note any details of what you were doing when you experienced the crash.
   - Re-open the app (if you can) and wait a few seconds for the Crash
Reporting prompt to pop up (if it ever does).
   - If the crash reporting doesn't open go to Settings > Help and feedback
   > and click "Report a bug"
   - If you can't even reopen the app cause it crashes so darn much, send
   me an email directly (jmi...@wikimedia.org)

I particularly want to thank our beta testers, some of whom reported issues
starting in 5.0.3. We value and take your testing feedback seriously, and I
apologize that we weren't able to prevent these issues despite your reports.

Thanks,

Josh Minor

[WikimediaMobile] Wikipedia v5.0.4 for iOS released to app store

2016-05-09 Thread Joshua Minor
Last week we released the 5.0.3 update to the iOS app. Although testers
reported stability issues in the earlier builds, we believed we had
resolved all these issues prior to submitting to the app store. We were
wrong.

To begin to address this, today we released version 5.0.4, now available
for download
[1] to
resolve most pressing issues. Particularly with loading the Most Read and
scrolling the Explore screen.

Thanks to the team for working quickly to diagnose and patch user reported
issues while at the Reading team off site meeting.

And thanks to our users for your patience.

Happy Monday,
Josh Minor

[WikimediaMobile] iOS 5.0.3 beta update

2016-04-29 Thread Joshua Minor
Hello mobile Wikimedians,

The iOS team is glad to announce a second beta release for the upcoming
5.0.3 version of the app.

5.0.3 is a minor release to address bugs and usability issues reported by
users. We've fixed the Main Pages so that they update as expected, patched
an issue with log-ins and fixed some crashes, especially with image display.

In addition to bug fixes, this release also adds text size adjustment for
articles, supports iPad split-view multi-tasking, and gives users much more
control over language preferences (including re-order and deletion). We
also enabled support for Myanmar (my) and Khmer (km) language Wikipedias.

This is our release candidate build for this version, so if you are a beta
tester please take a moment to install from TestFlight soon. Testers
can provide
feedback at this form: http://goo.gl/forms/rLVmFLzus2 Oh, or just respond
to this email...

If you are not a tester but want to be, please sign up here:

[WikimediaMobile] Wikipedia 5.0.2 Released

2016-03-29 Thread Joshua Minor
Hello,

The WMF's iOS App team is glad to announce that version 5.0.2 of our app
has been released to the App Store[1]. This is an expedited bug fix to
address issues with links into the app. These issues were caused by the iOS
9.3 release and have hit many apps, causing links to fail or apps to stall
on startup[2]. Working with Apple we have incorporated their fix and the
issue appears to be resolved for our app (you may still see this with other
apps until iOS 9.3.1 is released).

In addition to more stable link handling we have a couple other small
improvements included:
 - Fixed an issue where some "Read More" recommendations were hidden or
missing from article footers.
 - Additional localizations from TranslateWiki.

Thanks,
Josh Minor

[1] - https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/wikipedia-mobile/id324715238?mt=8
[2] - This was caused by a change in how the OS handles links to sites with
large numbers of sub-domains (as we have for our languages). See also press
reports, such as: http://9to5mac.com/2016/03/27/some-users-reporting-iphone-

 - Improved loading times and less bandwidth usage from images on the
Explore feed
 - Better filters of Special pages on Top Read for non-English Wikis

Re: [WikimediaMobile] iOS App Release

2016-03-11 Thread Joshua Minor
Thanks Lego!

The "Because you read" feature is driven by the Cirrus MoreLike api.
Basically when you refresh the feed we send a query to MoreLike, and put
the received results into the feed. We do not build or maintain any user
specific browsing history or interest profiles on the backend. On the
client device we keep a browsing history (which you can delete via the
"Clear" button on the History tab). This means our recommendations are a
bit less "personal" than other similar systems, but privacy friendly and
built with compentents already available in the MediaWiki/Wikipedia stack.

After we have more info about the Explore feed and how people are using it
(via those opt-in analytics and qualitative feedback) we'll be starting an
on-wiki conversation for future directions that maintain our privacy
commitments but deliver "good stuff" to read.

[WikimediaMobile] iOS App Release

2016-03-10 Thread Joshua Minor
Hello again mobile wikimedians,

This morning the 5.0.0 update to the Wikipedia Mobile iOS app went live on
the App Store[1]. As previously described on list[2], and on wiki[3], this
is a major overhaul to the app, focusing on making a great browsing, search
and reading experience for app users.

Features include:

   - New Explore feed for browsing and discovering content
   - Simplified and touch friendly navigation, including 3D touch shortcuts
   - Convenient multilingual search, and integration with iOS Spotlight
   - Clean and modern visual design and reading experience

For more, check out this WMF blog post[4] or watch this short demo video on
Commons[5].

We've also been getting very positive press in many tech news outlets,
including:

   - Venture Beat [6]
   - Engadget [7]
   - The Next Web [8]

5.0.0 is just the beginning of a new road to making an iOS app Wikipedians
and can be really proud of, and readers will love. We know we have
longstanding needs like text size adjustment and find-in-page that are
still missing. We also need to get better at accessibility. And, sadly, our
editing features remain minimal. But,we think this is a solid foundation we
can build on.

This was truly a team effort by the WMF iOS team, and many other staff
(particular thanks to Communications, Research and Analytics). And of
course thanks again to our code contributors, translators and beta testers.

Feedback can be sent from in the app (open the Settings, then tap "Write to
us"), chat us on freenode IRC at #wikimedia-ios, or talk on our team's
MediaWiki page[9].

Re: [WikimediaMobile] iOS Release Candidate

2016-03-04 Thread Joshua Minor
Brion's correct. We have to submit localizations when we submit the app for
review, so any translations after Wednesday morning will get sync'ed into
the next update. We will, most likely, have a fast follow release for bug
fixes and more localizations very quickly.

I also want to take a chance to thank our translators. I know we've asked a
lot of you as we made lots of changes and iterations over the last couple
months. Now that the major redesign is completed, we expect to have many
fewer text changes in future point updates.

[WikimediaMobile] iOS Release Candidate

2016-03-02 Thread Joshua Minor
Hello mobile Wikimedians,

I'm excited to announce that we submitted a release candidate of our major
update today, and plan to release publicly on Wednesday March 9th.

If you are in the beta you should be able to install the release now from
TestFlight.

We are working with Communications on next week's public release, and I'm
getting our on wiki docs updated, so expect to hear more soon.

On behalf of the iOS team at the WMF, I also particularly want to thank our
testing volunteers and those who submitted code to the project.

Thanks,

[WikimediaMobile] Wikipedia Mobile v5 for iOS - Last chance to beta test...

2016-02-19 Thread Joshua Minor
Hello mobile wikimedians,

In late December the Foundation's iOS team announced[1] a public beta of a
major overhaul[2] of the iOS Wikipedia app. Today we delivered what we hope
will be a final beta before launch, and are primarily in bug fix and visual
touches mode.

If you would like to participate as a beta tester, it is NOT TOO LATE.
Please sign-up here if interested:
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/19flzJ3lObZLfN5gKv69BZWkeouH7Vuznykk6q-O6xRc/viewform

If you have tried a previous beta (thanks), now would be a great time to
update to the latest version.

And last but not least, if you have feedback you can provide it via this
form:
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1NDBPJvWZ0idh9OuQ8pt684c9MwitOHQGsFvXTO4tcs0/viewform

In our IRC channel on freenode at #wikimedia-ios or on our project talk
page[3]

Or just send me an email!

Thanks to all the code contributors, bug filers, testers and anyone who's
helped make the app better.

Prior to release I will send more info to this list about the feedback
we've received that we were not able to act on, and future features and
improvements based on that feedback.

Thanks,
Josh

Re: [WikimediaMobile] Fwd: [Analytics] Preliminary goals for analytics infrastructure team

2016-01-14 Thread Joshua Minor
THANK YOU Nuria and analytics team.

I cannot express how excited we are to have this ready in time for our
upcoming major release.

We will prioritize switching off labs for our next beta iteration, which is
preliminarily set to go out on the 26th of January. I will follow up with
more specifics after the next iOS team planning this Tuesday.

Thanks,
Josh

Hi Sjoerd,

Thanks for your interest.

If you've previously registered, you do not need to register for this
update. However, we are prioritizing distribution to people who've signed
up specifically for this test. We will then back-fill in existing testers
until we reach Apple's limit.

So, helpful to give us your name and email on the new form (
https://goo.gl/forms/hNxPJah57p), but not required.

Cheers,
Josh

[WikimediaMobile] Beta of Wikipedia 5.0.0 for iOS

2015-12-21 Thread Joshua Minor
Hello,

Since last quarter the WMF’s iOS team [1] (part of the Reading product
group) has been working on a major version update to our iOS app [2].
Rather than adding new features to the existing app, the team took on the
goal of re-thinking our mobile readers, and how we could provide them with
a delightful, app-specific, experience that will keep them reading
Wikipedia on iOS.

After an extended alpha period we’re ready to share that work with you, and
we’re looking forward to your feedback!

Sign up for the Beta by registering here: https://goo.gl/forms/hNxPJah57p

Once we are approved by Apple, you will receive a notification to install
the beta via the TestFlight platform.

I will also be giving a walkthrough of the app, as a lighting talk tomorrow
at 11 PST. It will be one of several to the WMF’s monthly lightning talks
for Dec, which will stream here:

==More info[3]==

What’s New?

Our aim was to give our users an easier and more inviting way to discover
and read Wikipedia on iOS, and find experiences to keep them engaged. So,
there are few new features or changes to the core features, but an all new
look-and-feel, and many changes to navigation around that core. 5.0 is a
complete overhaul from the ground up, but some major highlights include:

   -

New Explore screen, a mobile-friendly way to enable that Wikipedia
   moment of serendipity
   -

“First time user experience” that helps users get oriented and configure
   the app
   -

   All new user interface look-and-feel
   -

Tab based navigation for one tap access to your History and Saved pages
   -

Redesigned reader experience, with new page information and table of
   contents
   -

Easy access to language switching while searching and reading

Why is the app so different than the previous one?

Although the existing iOS app is well reviewed, and has been featured by
Apple, it has never been able to build a sizable audience. Compared to
other content sites on the internet, our official apps have not been able
to keep our iOS users engaged as they shifted from desktop browsers to
mobile apps. In order to “try again” to see if we could engage readers, and
also keep them engaged, we’re trying a totally new way of presenting
ourselves on iOS. You can read a lot more about this on our project wiki
[2] and in this product presentation [4].

What’s this Explore thing?

The app’s Explore screen is a new, mobile friendly, way to experience the
joy of discovery on Wikipedia. It mixes community curated content (from the
en.wikipedia Main Page and Commons) with personally relevant content (based
on articles you’ve read and your device location). All this is compiled
locally on device and presented in a UI paradigm that is friendly to short,
touch based sessions for casual consumption of media. It is an attempt to
find a new way to engage, and re-engage, readers on a regular basis, by
providing them a wide variety of dynamically changing content, presented in
a familiar format. We think it can be very powerful way to enable mobile
users to have that magic Wikipedia moment of discovery.

Where’s my favorite old feature?

Many features that were previously part of the “W” menu are now included in
the Explore page. Random articles and articles near your location can both
be found by exploring your feed. Other parts of the app now live in the
main tab bar (Recent and Saved pages), or in the upper bar (Settings). Not
finding something you loved? Fill out our feedback form and let us know
[5].

What’s missing? Known issues?

 - Feed language and site: Currently the Explore page takes its content
from your current “site”, based on your current search language. We will
need to add more nuance to our site and language controls. If you are a
multilingual user of the app, we’re particularly interested to get your
feedback.

- The app can be overly aggressive about updating/refreshing content. We
erred on the side of getting the “latest” content.

- Some localizations and RTL language support are incomplete (especially on
iOS 8). We are actively working on this.

- Navigation issues: although the tab based main interface has been well
liked by users, the new navigation flows have introduced some
inconveniences for longer sessions and quickly accessing some less
frequently used but much loved features. We look forward to hearing from
you about what you like, and don’t, about the new navigation.

How can I give feedback?

We have a feedback form you can fill out (anonymously) here [5] or on the
project’s wiki talk page here [2].

The team will also be at the wiki dev summit
, if you
want to talk IRL!

Re: [WikimediaMobile] Readership metrics for the week until September 20, 2015

2015-09-23 Thread Joshua Minor
Couple comments: on Jon's comments:

   - Two app-level metrics I would like to see moving forward would be a
number showing a daily/monthly visit count divided by the install base (if
it is achievable): 15% of Android users visit every day, 45% visit every
month. Along those lines, I am very interested to see the retention data
   that Android is now collecting.

Apple now provides App Retention info on iTunes Connect Analytics page, so
we can do this for both platforms. Let me know if I can help show you where
that live in our Apple account.

   - Ultimately, I think 30 day views (or 28 day views) are less subject to
   noise than 7-day.

Some kind of moving average may be helpful to reduce the noise. Maybe as a
trend line laid on top of the raw data?

2015-09-18 Thread Joshua Minor
Hi Pine, thanks for the interesting link.

I'll say from the iOS side, we are working on incorporating a feed as the
homepage of the app. The initial contents of the feed will be article of
the day, nearby articles and articles related to articles you recently
read. However the nice thing about a feed is that in the long run we can
try lots of different content types (such as picture of the day, etc) and
ordering of content and measure how that impacts usage.
