[MMouse]: jeff mangum to do got milk? spot

2000-03-10 Thread Matt Evanosky

hi list,
all this talk recently about the music being played in the commercials is
interestingit brings up the S word --no, not sassy, i mean sell-out...in
this forum, the way i see it is, and by the way, i may be paraphrasing a
bit from something i think i read in an interview once, so anyhoo i
think if hank rollins wants to do a nortel commersh or a photo for the
gap...then fineif he believes in the product then super...but more
importantly, if he makes X dollars doing something for the man, and then
puts that money into his publishing or record label to release something
really left of center, how is that wrong?
mr. rollins puts out a wide line of books as well as records from many
diverse artists and authors, you can't think that he makes that much money
from rollins band or the residuals from the chase

anyway, if superchunk wants to do a british knights jingle or looper gets
used on the x-games promo, look at it as them being able to pay for their
art, instead of having to scrape by and suffer...

[MMouse]: the mouse in denton

2000-03-10 Thread Capn576048

for anyone seeing the mouse in denton you can order tickets through
ticketweb.com and they are eight bucks a pop, but come out to about nine with
charges. I ordered eight tickets for me and my friends, but that may have
been too many so I will do a head count and if anyone needs a ticket i maybe
able to help (only if the show hasn't sold out). I don't think i would worry
to much about the show selling out cause last time I saw them in dallas we
were all worried that it would sell out and it was no where near selling out.

I wrote a hip play and directed it, so I'm not sweating it either,

Heard the album, saw them perform on Letterman and a PBS special. It's
interesting merely for being the Dan, with the oddball lyrics you can't quite
figure out, etc., but it sounds too lite-jazz-smooth, none of the rough edges
or Skunk Baxter-style guitar of early albums (hell, it's 20 years since
"Gaucho", they're old farts). And, as a reviewer pointed out already, some
of the new lyrics are just, well, creepy, in a
your-weird-uncle-wants-to-screw-you kind of way.

Also, in re the comments about selling out to commercials (the latest insult
was seeing Henry Rollins do Nortel Networks magazine ads), there's a
counter-argument that can be made that merely by being born on this planet
you become corrupt to the ways of the Spectacle to a certain extent, but I
guess I figure that if you're blatantly selling song rights to anyone from
Ford to Nortel, you're pretty much whoring around with a sign on the door.

When I was just a wee laddie, I used to read this book
called The Big Book of Rock Lists, and when of the
endlessly and needlessly informative lists centered
around bands whose names originated with something
have to do with sex. They had Steely Dan listed as
taken their name from a nickname for a condom, or
something to do with a condom (hell, I don't remember,
I was too young to know any better).
Other names on that list? The Lovin' Spoonful and
10cc come to mind, but I doubt too many of you young
whipper-snappers could name a single song by either
artist (c'mon, I dares ya!)...

will hook someone up with some serious bootlegs if
they can find this cover for me.
The Cure reminds me of my high school salad days.

What if the musician is dead and his estate made that
decision? What if the musician uses the money to
finance their next album? What if the musician
happens to own a VW and believes the company makes a
decent product? Hell, I would do a commercial for
Pioneer if they'd hook me up with another amplifier,
or I'd even do one for Maxwell House if it meant free
coffee. Supporting big business? Do you or someone
you know own a car? Do you buy gas for it? Well sir,
you are supporting two big evil businesses. Pshaw.

sell-out...Branch off in musical directions against
the grain of popular culture despite the threat of
million dollar losses..
I've got to give a high five to Mike Patton of Faith
No More for his relentles pursuit of experiments in
music composition, despite the break up of Faith No
More, ie Mr. Bungle and Fantomas. Anyone had a chance
to see either one of these? Take a listen to the
Fantomas CD and imagine them pulling it off live to a
"T." Two parts Mr. Bungle, one part Melvins, and one
part Slayer.
The only shitty part about seeing that live is all the
idiots expecting Faith No More songs.

As much as i hate to get all preachy to people i don't even know, i gotta
say that whenever a musician sells their song to a goddamn corporation like
VW, then they suck for supporting big business. I don't care how long
they've been around or if their on a major label or they're the best little
unknown band in the universe and they need a little boost, bands should not
SELL their music in order to SELL another product. Talk about fucking
selling out...
Wasn't anyone else pissed to hear John Lennon's music on a fucking Nike ad a

um. . .in re: nick drake, he's dead. not his fault (that the song was
allowed to be used. he was fairly complicit in his death.)

otherwise, if the band a) needs money, and b) doesn't have objections to the
product, why the hell not? chrissy hynde protested the gap because they
wanted to use a song of hers for "everyone in leather." okay, that's
understandable. but, hey, how do we know that vw isn't the car of choice for
the stereolab gang?
most of the people listening don't even know who the hell it is, if it's not
"instant karma" or "start me up," so it doesn't make that much difference in
the end anyway.
oh, and specify, because the big business = bad ethics generalization works
as well as not on radio = bad music.

one last thing. . .anyone else on this list like steely dan? i mean, really
like them, not in a hah-hah they're funny my parents used to listen to them
way. i'm happy that a) they've put out a new album (though i've not yet
heard it) but incredibly unhappy that b)their songs are being covered by
shitty new bands (smashmouth (again!), third eye blind, etc) for the upcoming
me, myself and irene soundtrack. they're not a contemp alt ironist joke,
dammit! (and besides, if i ever learn how to play my guitar, i wanted to
cover some of their songs, with sincerity).

i hate all the solos and crap in their music, and some of the back-up singing
is pretty terrible too, but lyrically (and in a fair amount of the non-soloey
music), they've got a bit going on. besides, any band that alludes to
william burroughs in their name can't be all bad (well, they could, but in
this case, i say they're not).

I recall around July of last year there was a small Barkmarket thread

exchange with vocalist/lyricist/guitarist Dave Sardy of Barkmarket, and
here's what I was told;

 1) Barkmarket *are* still together.
 2) Several new songs have been written.
 3) A new album is in the works, but a release date is unknown.
 4) A Barkmarket boxed-set will accompany the new album.

I don't know about any of you, but I CAN'T WAIT.

As mentioned last year by Virgil http://www.angelfire.com/tx/barkmarket/>, Dave Sardy has begun
his own label, See Thru Broadcasting .
It is probable that their new release will be on this label.
