[MMouse]: hmm
Promise Ring, Burning Airlines, Centromatic anyone know about this band Burning Airlines? I know Promise Ring and Centromatic, and this Burning Airlines sounds familiar, but I can't quite place it.. anyway, they're playing here in Dallas on the 28th, so I was just wondering what they're like.. and I've never seen the Promise Ring.. good show to see, I'm assuming? Mark
[MMouse]: pavement/calexico/dirty three..damnfineshow!
yeah, people were right about Calexico, they are really good. lots of fun. nice south of the border sound. and the song about Tulsa was really cool, I met a guy from the list, Robert, who happens to be from Tulsa, and he was standing there, and I was like, hey how about that? dirty three were amazing! The songs went on forever and the guy was jumping all over the stage with the violin, and it was just so intense. I was really ready for Pavement to come on, cause I was so tired, and had been on my feet all day already. I needed something to get my groove on, dirty three had lots of mellow moments mixed in with the madness. So, Pavement did not disappoint at all. They did everything I wanted to hear and then some, but not Shady Lane. I had that song on my mind all day and all night, but they never did play it. Is it just me, or is Stephen Malkmous a bit pretentious? Maybe just a tad conceited? But you know, there are some people who can do that and you're just like, "Yeah, well you're right, you are a badass.. I'd be the same way if I were you." He'd be like, "Ok, I know you'll like this one.. or, "this is from our last album, you'll like it because, well it's a great album.." and all you can say is, "damn right, man.. play that shit, I know I'll love it." he did a nice little switch on "..a word, a word that rhymes with Pavement.." he said, "a word that rhymes with Sebadoh.." people cracked up. it was cute.. good show... sososleepy.. Mark
[MMouse]: everything is nice...indeed.
alright, I finally found a copy of the Matador comp. I went to about seven stores, most of them didn't even know what I was talking about. And I wasn't about to go to Bill's and get screwed out of probably twenty dollars.. The bastard doesn't even price his stuff, you have to go ask him, and he decides how much to charge you. And it always varies. So, anyway, I found a copy at CD World for 11.98. Which kinda upset me because Matador said it would be under 10 bucks! I don't know how they can get away with charging more.. It was marked down from 13.98. But, you can't complain, all this good stuff, 3 discs, for only 12 bucks is still a badass deal. Mark
[MMouse]: just remembered another favorite show
I knew I would get to thinking and realize I had missed a great show I had seen. I just couldn't omit this one, DJ Spooky... At the Caravan of Dreams in Ft. Worth. Definitely, without a doubt, THE BEST SHOW of 1998...or was it '97? Whenever Riddum Warfare came out.. Plastilina Mosh, or whatever they were called...plasticina, something like that.. anyway, they could have stayed home as far as I was concerned, but my god, DJ Spooky kicked my ass.. the paper horse I was riding helped some, too. Mark
[MMouse]: oh no
Have any of you guys heard that Massive Attack split up?? Mark
[MMouse]: I should read the whole thing before I post
Following the release of 'Mezzanine', the band said in interviews that they were looking forward to working on solo projects following their promotional duties for the record and many speculated a split was imminent. Mark
[MMouse]: Queens
has anyone heard Queens of the Stone Age? They played with Ween a couple of weeks ago here, and they're gonna be playing again, this time headlining, on Oct. 5th. I've never heard them. think it'll be worth checking out? oh, they're also playing with Ash..?.. Mark
[MMouse]: june of foty fo..
jyeah. good show last night. i don't know who played before them. the first band i completely missed. i know there were about seven people on stage, but the second band i got to check out. i don't remember what they were called. i saw it on the poster on the wall.. which, i fucking forgot to snag. it was a huge poster, and i was gonna take it, but.. i forgot.. ah well.. anyway, the second band was really good. they sounded a whole lot like Trans Am. but they had vocals on most of their stuff. and not the vocoder kind of stuff like TA. i thought it was pretty obvious to everyone that they sounded just like Trans Am, especially when they started playing them on the PA between their set and June of 44. i was quite impressed with June. i hadn't seen them before, and i kind of expected a quiet sedate affair. i was quite wrong. they really fucking rocked! and the trumpet playing was cool. i always dig trumpet. (one reason i like the new Stereolab so much) i dont know any of the songs they did. i only recognized a couple as familiar. but, i definitely liked the show. next up.. Low and Silver Scooter. Mark
[MMouse]: Donnas
a friend of mine has video of the Donnas show in Dallas. He's planning on making copies. I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that he probably wouldn't mind making copies for any of you who may be interested. I'm sure there will be a nominal fee, perhaps just to cover the tape cost and postage. I will talk to him first to make sure it's cool, but if you guys are interested, go ahead and email me, and I'll let him know there are some people interested in having some tapes. Mark
[MMouse]: flame on
this girl at work told me she had some import singles and stuff from the Flaming Lips and she would bring me some to check out.. So, she brings me a big ass stack.. I couldn't believe it! let's see what we've got here.. Brainville, with a live version and raindrops. Providing needles for your balloons..Turn it on with demo versions of she don't use Jelly and put the waterbug in the police man's ear.. Wastin' pigs is still radical, with a Jets two track demo... This here giraffe.another one of this here giraffe with a star shaped cd.. they both have different stuff on them.she don't use jelly with a bluegrass version of turn it onand a song called * ? ok, never heard of that one and also a bootleg called The day Andy Gibb died... with lots of stuffhere's another she don't use jelly with some different stuff, um the process and moth in the incubator and a couple of Bad Days eps one with some green jelly inside the package... (!)yes, this should be fun... also a couple of comps with flaming lips as well as stuff like the Muffs, Boredoms, American Music Club, and Uncle Tupelo wow.. . damn I can't wait till the Cibbo Matto show, and June of 44 show, and Pavement... the dry spell is definitely over for Dallas.. (except for this infernal hellish heat. I hate Texas in the summer..) Mark
[MMouse]: BS
So, I finally heard some of the Tigermilk album.. Thanks to the miracles of modern technology, MP3's,and indierock.com.. I was going to check out the Will Oldham live stuff, and noticed they have two BS tracks from Tigermilk.. Electronic Renaissance, which reminds me a little of Arab Strap. (not surprisingly) and Expectations.. A little more on the lines of If You're Feeling Sinister.. No, I still haven't bought this damn album.. It's nearly impossible for me to pay bills, rent, etc and buy all the stuff I need to get.. I still buy at least five cd's a month, and still can't keep up with all the good shit I need to get.. anyway, you guys should check out that site.. Of course, I know you on Modest Mouse will already know about it, since I got the link from the Mouse list. Mark
[MMouse]: Trance Syndicate
Ok, so a friend of mine used to be on Trance Syndicate, but then apparently Trance went under, and they were no longer on that label.. But then someone told me that Trance was still around. (maybe got up again?) And I have heard that they still have bands on their label with tour dates.. but their website is not up.. anyone know anything about this? Mark
[MMouse]: MCA's caddy
MCA from the beasties is auctioning off his 1973 Cadillac.. there's no way I could afford it, but it's worth checking out just to see what a cool ride it is.. http://auction.milarepa.org/ Mark

[MMouse]: benfolds5
hey, so I'm sure a lot of you have heard the new Ben Folds, yes? If you haven't gotten it yet, I would definitely recommend it. If you get it at Best Buy, you can get a video with it too with some live stuff such as Brick, etc.. and it's only $19.95, very wise buy indeed. I've been pretty quiet lately. I haven't had much to contribute to your conversations, since I haven't been listening to the new Tortoise/Ex or any BTS. I loaded up on some jazz last week and have immersed myself in that. Eric Dolphy, Out to Lunch; Miles Davis, E.S.P; Cannonball Adderley, Mercy, Mercy, Mercy; Herbie Hancock, Maiden Voyage; and John Coletrane, the Complete Impulse Studio recordings.. That will keep me busy for quite some time. but I really wanna get that new Isotope shite. kram
[MMouse]: Liz Phair does NOT suck!!!
so there. Mark
[MMouse]: Trans Am in Dallas
Ah, so I got to see Trans Am here in Dallas this Saturday. Very cool show. There were two openers, The Champs. They were like instrumental metal, or as I prefer to call it, "Heavy Mental". Kind of like Metallica without lyrics. Then Pan Sonic, they were quite cool as well. No guitars, or anything like that to muss things up. Very loud, bass heavy, kinda nouveau Kraftwerk. Then of course Trans Am rocked the house! They didn't do a whole lot from their new album, which was fine by me. I can't really get into their vocals on that album. But what they did do with the vocals was cool, it was definitely better live than on the cd. And this friend that was with me there knew the guy that was doing Trans Am's sound, and who also produced Futureworld. I don't remember his last name, I just know his name was Johnathan. So, we met up with him after the show, and hung out in the little room upstairs from the stage. We smoked out with the guys from Pan Sonic, and the Champs, and Trans Am was pretty much just in and out. I only got to talk to them for a minute or two. Just complimented them on the show, and what not. Mentioned how much my band is influenced by them. But not too much gushing, you know. I had to play it cool. I was just in awe that I was actually hanging out with these guys. We got invited to an after party, but my friend didn't want to feel like he was riding Johnathan's coat tails. I don't know why, I didn't care, I just wanted to go to the party. But, about halfway home, he wised up and was like, "We should have gone to the party". No shit Oh, and I saw Delta 72 in Denton Friday. That was a cool show. They remind some people of the Make Up, and a friend of ours mentioned that, and the guy pointed to my friend who happened to be at that show also, and who got us in with Trans Am and the bunch, and said, "That's your fault isn't it?" They used to play together in D.C. and he knows about the rivalry between them and the Make Up, and he was like, "That wasn't me." It wasn't, but yeah, it was his fault for mentioning it to the other guy. Anyway, it was funny. guess you had to be there. There was also this other band called The Git low. They were fucking insane. They played about six minutes, flailing, falling down, swinging their guitars at the crowd, pushing them around. They weren't even on the stage. They were out on the floor with everyone else. It was crazy. Anyway, it was a very good weekend for shows. Also, Man or Astroman? tonight in Denton. Fuck sleep, who needs it? Mark
[MMouse]: FW: guilty pleasures
-Original Message- From: Edington, Mark Sent: Friday, May 07, 1999 5:28 PM To: '[EMAIL PROTECTED]'; Subject: guilty pleasures So my coworker here keeps the station on an oldies/RB station, and Sara Smiles, by Hall Oates came on, and I was totally digging it. And while I think it's pretty safe to say that a lot of people would agree that that's a pretty good song, it made me think about some of the other songs I like that I would not readily admit to liking. So, what about you guys? What are some of the guilty pleasures you might have? Come on, it's safe, we're all pals here. I'm not afraid, I'll tell you. Ok, for one thing, Copa Cabana, Barry Manilow. Yah, I grew up with that song, and I can't help but groove when it's on. True, Spandau Ballet. Really cheesy, but I still like it. Muskrat Love. Captain Tennille (or however you spell it). I would never admit to that without the anonymity of the 'net. Telephone Lines (I think that's the name of it) ELO. Again, a song I grew up with. I wore out my sister's 45. And.. check this out.. A friend of mine busted out a tape of my step brother's that somehow made it into my tape case. (I swear it isn't mine) And it was a single of... Milli Vanilli's. Blame it on the Rain. At first I was like, take that shit off. But before long, I was singing along just like it was 1989 all over again. And one more that comes to mind, a more recent one that might not be quite as bad as the others I've mentioned, but still pretty bad. Black Hole Sun.. By, well you know who I'm talking about. Ok, so I got that off my chest. I feel better now. Don't let me be alone here, I want to see that I'm not the only one that will admit to something this bad. I mean, obviously I do know good music, but sometimes when you're behind closed doors, strange things can happen. Mark
[MMouse]: (MM)new guy
howdy, folks. This is Mark from Texas. Dallas, that is. I just signed up, so I thought I'd say 'allo to everyone. I was hesitant about signing up, as I am also on a Sea and Cake list, and sometimes get about thirty messages in a day, but what the hell, I really dig the Mouse, so.. I am pretty new to their stuff. I first heard them about six months ago. Edit the sad parts, from Interstate 8, as I'm sure you all know. That was the first song I heard, and I've never been the same since. Anyway, I figured this would be the best way to learn more about them, and the freaks that listen to them. so, take it sleazy folks. lata, Mark
