Re: [Mono-list] (no subject)
I guess that the problem is not MonoDevelop, is mcs, which it does not support Generics, you need to use gmcs instead. You could configure this in project preference, setting the targe to 2.0 framework. MonoDevelop 0,12 does not properly works on syntaxis highlighting with Generics, but gmcs compile it great. It's all about the applications. We think that Mono is superior to other platforms, but that doesn't make it so. What makes it a _contender_ is that it is actually used to make applications. At present, Java doesn't appear to be used for many desktop applications; it's primarily a server side framework. That may change, but decent apps take time to write, so the eminent takeover of Java will be a long time coming. (Never mind the fact that it's only Java 7 that is currently GPL'd, not Java 1.1...1.6, and it'll take awhile for the previous versions to be freed...) BUT we would be forgetting that mono being GPL is what made it superior, now that java is GPL i fear that mono will be trampled by the uncontrollable beast that java is. Trampled by the uncontrollable beast of Java? Like Python was? Perl? PHP? .NET? Java isn't doing lots of trampling from what I can tell -- *all* languages have their adherents, and the freeing of Java isn't going to cause a Python/PHP user to suddenly pick it up. Freeing Java also doesn't remove the primary advantage of Mono: compatibility with .NET. If you want to share source code between future versions of Windows (as Microsoft mentioned at one point that most future APIs would be managed), then Mono is the only option. Otherwise, you're missing out on future extensions to Windows. You may not care, but few commercial companies are willing to ignore 90%+ of the market. (Even if you think that percentage will fall, it'll be awhile -- if ever -- before Windows has 50% of the market.) (Note that I said share. Mono permits Unix Wars-style portability, where platform checks can be used to determine at runtime which APIs to use. So you might not be able to port your entire .NET app to Mono, but you'll at least be able to share the core libraries while having distinct Gtk#, SWF, and WPF user interfaces to satisfy Linux, XP, and Vista users. This certainly is better than having completely separate apps for Linux Windows.) - Jon ___ Mono-list maillist - Mono-list@lists.ximian.com http://lists.ximian.com/mailman/listinfo/mono-list

Hi, I tried to compile the latest version of monodevelop from the svn, and it seems to have a problem with finding nunit.core and nunit.framework, even though they are both in my gac. So I tried to compile a test program which only referes to nunit.framework, and it also failed to find it. After looking in the source of mcs, I have the impression that I always have to pass the fully qualified name of an assembly to the -r argument, including it's version number and everything. So my question: What is supposed to be passed to the -r argument? Should it be the fully qualified name with version and everything, or is simply nunit.framework enough? I looked in the driver.cs file of mcs, and it seems to load the referenced assemblies using the Assembly.Load function. This gives me the idea that you will have to reference assemblies using their fully qualified name. Isn't it supposed that nunit.framework should be enough? In that case, I think mcs should use the Assembly.LoadWithPartialName function? I don't see any legal issue regarding listing the site on a page that showcases Mono/ASP.NET users. It can be seen in Server HTTP header that it uses mod_mono and can be seen that has .aspx pages as well. So it's no secret that they use Mono/ASP.NET. Only people related to the site or the company (Nick for example) who has inside information should take care not to publish information they shouldn't because of non-disclosure agreements for example. It could be considered a bug, let us know if you find a way to teach auto* to do the correct thing here. Anyway, I suggest you use something like www.scratchbox.org to do cross compilations. I hacked the line where genmdesc was executed in the makefile to use a old genmdesc that was compile for the intel linux box. A good solution:-) The same is needed for monoburg. Can anyone tell me wich cross tool chain to use to cross compile mono to ppc from a intel linux box? And what does the ./configure command with its arguments more or less look like? For ppc, using a ppc box is the best solution, IMHO, there are many available at cheap prices. lupus -- - [EMAIL PROTECTED] debian/rules [EMAIL PROTECTED] Monkeys do it better ___ Mono-list maillist - Mono-list@lists.ximian.com http://lists.ximian.com/mailman/listinfo/mono-list

There is a patch in CVS for mod_mono to work with multiple virtual hosts. I have not tested it out yet so I cannot give you any pointers on using it. As far as the application goes, each ASP.NET page does not have to be part of an application. They can be served up in the same way php and perl can. What an application allows you to do is actually build a web application in much the same manner as you would go about writing a desktop application. There is an optional global application file that can be used so multiple pages in the application can share information with each other as well as define tasks common to the application as a whole. I hope that helps. Christopher McGinnis Neopets Inc. - Why is it a must to keep the asp.net pages in a so-called 'application'? I don't really understand what's meant by an application exactly...coz I am used to writing php/perl CGIs, and seems that they don't have such concept. This idea annoys me because my apache is configured to serve mass virtual hosts dynamically. Usually for the perl/php case, I just need to map *.pl *.php to their respective handler. But for the asp.net (or maybe even the JSP as well?) I need to setup applications to handle the pages. Why is it necessary to have applications? It sounds to me that it would be quite troublesome to setup so many applications on the web server By the way, would that imply that it is not sensible/possible to provide asp.net hosting service to a lot of users on a shared server if the 'application' restriction must apply? coz I might need to create thousands of applications for them, which could add a lot of work load to me, and causing the httpd.conf to grow very very big. Could anyone kindly give me some guidance on this matter? I'd appreciate your help!! Best regards mc. Hello folks, I've put together a patch for XmlTextReader. If this is of any interest to anyone, please feel free to incorporate it. This patch make the addresses three issues:- fills thrown XmlException objects with Location information- verifies that element tags are paired together in a valid fassion- prevents the apperance of multiple root elements. I am not running .NET, nor have access to it at the moment. The exceptions that I have added for validation purposes do not conform with the .NET messages. Could somebody check them? I may continue to dable in the class libraries, if anyone has specific requests or comment/corrections let me know. cheers, erikPost your free ad now! Yahoo! I just checked in some changes to SWF and system.drawing for Alexandre Pigolkine. I do not have a way to compile it right now. Could someone do a fresh checkout and make sure we did not break the build. Thanks, [EMAIL PROTECTED] ___ Mono-list maillist - [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://lists.ximian.com/mailman/listinfo/mono-list
