[MOPO] Be very afraid-Ebay is now Big Brother?

2005-01-17 Thread Tom Johnson
Here's something I find very alarming, disturbing, and, I'm sorry to say,
not surprising. I think this is a little more serious than the $400 Wizard
of Oz Portal poster sucker sale thread, too.

I was browsing Ebay, and found a seller who had a Dutch "Son of Kong" poster
(at a very high price). But I was curious, so I punched up the seller's
other auctions. The seller (oldpaperville) also had some cool-looking world
war II era patriotic posters. I clicked on one, and then another, and
another, and another. And each time, instead of the item auction, I got
this:

"Dear User:

Unfortunately, access to this particular category or item has been blocked
due to legal restrictions in your home country. Based on our discussions
with concerned government agencies and eBay community members, we have taken
these steps to reduce the chance of inappropriate items being displayed.
Regrettably, in some cases this policy may prevent users from accessing
items that do not violate the law. At this time, we are working on less
restrictive alternatives. Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience
this may cause you, and we hope you may find other items of interest on
eBay.

Thank You".

My country: USA. The category: collectibles/militariana/wwII. Their WWI
and non war related stuff seems to come up fine. I'll give you dollars to
donuts this has something to do with the so-called Patriot act, and for some
sick wrong-headed reason, Ebay will not allow Americans to view the auctions
forPATRIOTIC AMERICAN POSTERS FROM THE GOOD WAR!!!

I'd appreciate if someone else would try this sellers list--I'm going to go
try the category generally, but I'd really like to know what's going on
here. IS it just me, or is this really wrong? (maybe they're only blocking
me.. Maybe I'm on their list. Excuse me, I have to go peek out of the
blinds to check for black helicopters and strange men smoking under
streetlamps with eyeholes in their newspapers. --Tom

Re: [MOPO] Portals - and the seller

2005-01-17 Thread Tom Martin

Portal is a publisher of posters started in the 50s -60s. they got ther
start selling used mexican
bullfighting posters, then brancehed into fine art and advertising
reprints.
many people think they have Originals as Portal would sometimes pront
the original copywrite
next to the title. the early runs were printed on Flat uncoated paper
stock and so many people think they are very old as they resemble early
paper stock. However most fall in the 20 x 28 size.
They have done 1/2 sheets  and also inserts and even lobbie card
images, although most are printed
22x 28 20 x 28 and some 24 x 36 and other odd sizes. Portal almost
always prints  there name
Portal Pubs, Corte madera, california
why these cofuse people is that if there granma bought it in the 60s
they have lost the provence
in family heresay.
also there were about 6-10 other producers of reprints in the 60s-90s
and in the 90s was when all the europeons began reprints in 27 x 40 size
that were exact NSS repos of more popoular titles and some were even lisenced
to be distributed, also the studios began wholesaleing direct as NSS
closed down and even sold titles themselves.

>Naturally, the most desirable items still get some competitive bidding
-- this will be true on Ebay or MPB.

I'm not sure I agree with this.
If the desirable items get competitive bidding
anywhere, then that means the items we are talking
about selling for one bid and/or the minimum are not desirable items (and very likely
common items).
Since MPB's main audience is made up of this list
and other hardcore collectors, isn't it very likely
that they already have the item in question (if
it's common), or that they have no interest in
it if it's not a desirable item?

So what we are really looking at on these items
is eight people who have no interest glance at
it on MPB, while on eBay those eight people
also glance, but of the other 12 (who might have
been there looking for the video, or something else
alltogether because of the wide
variety of available items) hopefully one will
actually make an impulse purchase and buy it.

You simply click on the bidder's ID, then on the box that says
"contact member" when it pulls up their feedback page.
You can then send them a message thru eBay.

Re: [MOPO] portal publications rare original 1939

2005-01-17 Thread J R

It was about 8 months ago that eBay changed their email system
so that you can no longer email a bidder while an auction is in progress unless
you have placed a bid on that auction. It used to be that concerned MOPO members
would write to the bidders on these fraudulent auctions and warn them about what
they were bidding on, but now that is not practical with eBay's new system, so
the newbies are just left on their own to be eaten by the sharks swimming in the
eBay pool.

Needless to say, you will never find a reproduction being
offered as an "original" or even vaguely hinted at being any kind of an original
on www.MoviePosterBid.com  But
who cares? Ebay only cares about the numbers -- and most posters sellers only
care about eBay's numbers.

Re: [MOPO] Portals - and the seller

2005-01-17 Thread Phil Edwards Cinema Arts

In the 1970s, there was a company in CA (as I
recall) that did repro movie posters. This was Portal Publications. They were
sold as repro posters and some of them were very good quality. I still have some
buried somewhere - my last post about them wasn't a joke. They were all part of
the late 60s/early 70s boom in movie nostalgia that saw the revival of interest
in the careers of the Hollywood greats like Bogart, Valentino, Temple et al, and
corresponded with a boom in publishing of books about movies and movie stars.
This flowed on into 1977/78 and STAR WARS and the boom continued, but this isn't
a  history lesson.

I suspect a couple of serious collectors back
then supplied them with their posters for reproduction and made some dough out
of it. How many people had a PHANTOM OF THE OPERA six sheet on linen, or the
German 3 sheet of TARZAN OF THE APES, even 30 years ago?

I don't know who the people behind Portal
Publications were. Anybody got anything further on their history
etc?

As for the seller of the WIZARD OF OZ, he says
it's "original" but doesn't say really "original" what... he shows enough
pictures so that buyers "know" what they are buying. He has a returns policy, he
says, so it's a classic case of caveat emptor.

Does eBay care? Of course not. Right now on eBay
Australia, there are scalpers selling tickets for a tsunami aid concert here at
huge amounts of money that of course eBay is making a fortune in commissions out
of - and publicly defending it in the Australian press. I'll forward anyone the
story from today's Sydney Morning Herald if they are really
interested.

It's a business to them. The only time taste
comes into effect is when the pressure from the US eBay community tells them
that something is in bad taste (like selling WTC stuff after 9/11).

[MOPO] Ruth Warrick Dies

2005-01-17 Thread Gordon DeVinney

'All My Children' Star Ruth Warrick DiesBy THE ASSOCIATED
PRESS

Filed at 11:10 p.m. ET
NEW YORK (AP) -- Ruth Warrick, the darling of the daytime soap opera ``All My
Children'' who launched her career in Orson Welles' classic ``Citizen Kane,''
has died, ABC-TV said Monday. She was 88.
Warrick died at her New York home Saturday of complications from pneumonia,
said ABC.
In ``All My Children,'' which debuted in 1970, Warrick played Phoebe Tyler
Wallingford, the grande dame of the fictitious affluent town of Pine Valley. She
portrayed the meddlesome and over-the-top personality so believably that her
fans often had trouble distinguishing between the stylish actress and her
fictitious, equally sophisticated character.
Twice nominated for an Emmy for the role, Warrick often talked about how
Phoebe Tyler had become an integral part of her life.
The producer Jorn Winther once said of the actress: ``Obviously Ruth and
Phoebe are separate and unique, yet they have much in common. All I can say with
confidence is that they are both great ladies and that I love them.''
Born and raised in St. Joseph, Mo., Warrick left for New York after
graduating from the University of Kansas City. Her interest in acting led her to
the Mercury Theater troupe, headed by Welles.
She made her Hollywood debut in 1941 in ``Citizen Kane'' as Emily Norton
Kane. Welles, who co-wrote, directed and starred in the film, hand-picked her
for the role of his wife because he said there were no ``ladies in Hollywood''
who fit the bill.
In 1991, Warrick was honored with a caricature on the wall of the famous New
York restaurant Sardi's in honor of the 50th anniversary of her performance in
the film.
Warrick later appeared in other movies, including ``The Corsican Brothers,''
with Douglas Fairbanks Jr., and ``The Great Bank Robbery.''
But television turned out to be her medium. Before landing the role of Phoebe
Tyler, Warrick had the starring role in the series ``Father of the Bride'' and
received an Emmy nomination for her role as Hannah Cord in the long-running
``Peyton Place.'' She also appeared in two other soap operas: ``As the World
Turns,'' from 1956-60, and ``The Guiding Light,'' from 1953-54.
Warrick seemed to find her niche in the role of Phoebe Tyler. She often said
that it was Welles who was indirectly responsible for the character's
development.
In her autobiography ``The Confessions of Phoebe Tyler,'' Warrick wrote that
Kane's wife almost seemed to mature into the soap opera character.
``Since Emily's character owes much to the compelling hand of Orson Welles,
so, indirectly, must Phoebe's,'' she wrote.
Warrick also had a strong commitment to the arts in education. She taught at
Julia Richman High School in New York as part of former President Carter's City
in Schools program and was a dropout prevention consultant for the Labor
Department under former President Kennedy and for former President Johnson's Job
Training Corps.
She is survived by three children, a grandson and six
great-grandchildren.

[MOPO] For Sale: MINT One Flew Over Insert ORIGINAL!!!!!

2005-01-17 Thread Mike Davis
Hey gang,
Anyone interested in a MINT (yes, mint), ORIGINAL (yes, original),
PRE-AWARDS (yes, the rare and much-desired pre-awards version) insert for
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
This is widely regarded as the best format for this poster. And the
condition is absolutely beautiful - flawless, as if it was printed
yesterday. No, this title was not one of the 15 or so that were reprinted in
the 1990's.
Anyways, if you're interested let me know.
Thanks!

It's not generally my habit, but I wrote the seller and gently suggested that it was a repo. Didn't hear from him and he didn't pull it. Premeditated fraud.

I just have to find that Portal PHANTOM OF
THE OPERA six sheet (of course it's a SMALL six sheet) and that BLACK CAT
one sheet, the 3 sheet TARZAN OF THE APES (another small poster) ... and a
couple of others and we can pay the house off, take a holiday, have that special
plastic surgery I've always dreamed of and stop trying to explain to people
that a "hand litho" isn't a "stone litho" no matter how sexy they think "stone
litho" makes a post-1945 daybill sound.

Monsieur Vollin, as proven week after week
on eBay, there are one million suckers born every minute. Some of them even
bid on the same sellers stuff week after week, often paying exorbitant
amounts for items that can be purchased elsewhere for a fraction of their final
"bid price".

But, sir, I know you and I, and several
other long time sellers, traders and collectors prefer to SLEEP at
night.

Now, I have a nice bridge for sale. Built
in 1932, it spans Sydney Harbour. All yours for $1.00. Step right
up!!

Re: [MOPO] MOPO/ two subjects by movpost starting with fake daybills

2005-01-17 Thread J R

Sean,

Seems to me you are still over-complicating (and missing) the
point:

If you're only going to get 1 bid on Ebay, and you're only going to get 1
bid on MPB -- and it is cheaper to set the minimum price you really want on
the item at MPB... instead of settling for a lower minimum than you really want
on eBay to save on fees... then you make more money selling that item on
MPB. Does it really matter if 20 people look at your item and only 1 bids the
minimum or 8 people look at your item and 1 bids the minimum? You're still only
getting the minimum either way, but it costs you less to do it on MPB. And you
don't have to settle for a lower minimum than you think is reason just to save
on fees... and the false hope that you'll get more attention from all the Lookie
Lous.

Naturally, the most desirable items still get some competitive bidding --
this will be true on Ebay or MPB.

If the audience on MPB hasn't grown fast enough to suit some sellers, it is
because they have not participated in the site and helped build it up more. If
more sellers were listing more on MPB, the numbers you're talking about would
shift even more drastically and very quickly. The fact that many sellers are
still refusing to try MPB is due to their lack of vision, not a lack of
potential bidders on MPB. The site is not unknown anymore, it's been almost a
year. Do a search on the phrase "movie poster auctions" on Yahoo or MSN or Ask
Jeeves or Alta Vista and see where MPB shows up on the real (non-paid,
non-sponsored) results. Google is a different story, but that's because Google
has flipped out with delusions of zillion dollar grandeur, like eBay, and is now
useless as a real search engine.

I'm not sure what your point is about someone setting an over-priced
minimum starting bid? I guess that never happens on eBay?

-- JR

Competitive bidding is certainly something that happens with desirable
pieces. But if you mean to say, that there isn’t any real bidding on most
uninteresting and/or unimportant posters than you are correct.
And while MoPoBid might be actual dollars and cents cheaper than eBay to
list crazy reserves and asking prices (I still remember the insane $6500
starting price on the Creature From the Black Lagoon lobby set during the
Halloween “sale”), there is strong evidence to suggest that MoPoBid is
actually OVERPRICED when compared to eBay and the amount of exposure it brings
  your product.

[MOPO] FA: 659 folded one-sheets plus 7 bulk lots ending Tuesday on eBay!

2005-01-17 Thread Bruce Hershenson
I currently have 659 folded one-sheets on eBay, plus 7 "bulk" lots (see
below). ALL these started at just 99 cents with NO RESERVES on any of
them! I added these 659 folded one-sheets on Tuesday, January 11th,
(starting at around 7 PM CST) as 7 day items, which means they end Tuesday,
January 18th, starting at the same time. In addition to the 659 folded
one-sheets, there are also 7 GREAT "bulk" lots of one-sheets, three-sheets,
and six-sheets (you'll find them at the very start of our listings. Each
bulk lot contains a large number of posters, and most will likely sell for
wholesale prices or below!
Because they all started at just 99 cents each, many of them are
still currently absolute steals! As of this writing (Monday) over 20% of
the lots are still at just 99 cents! Around 50% are under $3, and over 75%
are under $10. And most of the 25% that are over $10 are still way under
their official "retail" prices (the ones you could find anywhere
else!). REMEMBER THAT JUST ABOUT EVERY DEALER ASKS $10-$20 EACH FOR THESE
ON THEIR WEBSITES!
I am giving away THREE of my $20 full-color books as a bonus with
ANY purchase, even if it is for one 99 cent item! Everyone why buys one or
more of this weeks' 659 folded one-sheets gets one copy each of War Movie
Posters, Sports Movie Posters, and Hollywood Posters I, my first million
dollar auction catalog. Why? Because I am betting that once you see some
of these books in person you are likely to buy the rest of them, once you
see how high quality they are. If you don't already have these books, you
are silly if you don't find one of this week's items to bid on, even if it
is just to get the three bonus books.
Why sell so many items all at once? Because this way the shipping
cost is far less of a factor at all. As a regular eBay buyer, I find it
frustrating to find a single item I want for say, $8, and then have to pay
$8 shipping. That doubles the cost of the item! Often I will find five
such items at one time, but because they are offered by five different
buyers I have to pay five different shipping charges, and those five $8
items end up costing me $80! But this week on eBay, you can bid on any
amount of the 659 one-sheets I am offering and no matter how many of them
you buy the U.S. shipping is still just $8 for all, so the five $8 posters
cost you $48, not $80! Once you get any one lot from me this week you get
all the rest postpaid (within the U.S.)!
Given there are so many places you can purchase vintage movie
memorabilia, doesn't it make sense to buy where there are no reserves, the
items are accurately described (with large UNENHANCED images, the bidding
is run by a third party (eBay, not me, and I have no clue how much you are
bidding) and when you win an item or items it is shipping promptly,
incredibly well packed, and you are only billed $8 U.S. shipping (actual
cost elsewhere), no matter how many items you purchase in a week?
Be sure to check out these 659 items sometime before they end
Tuesday, January 18th, starting at around 7 PM CST (either by going to
http://tinyurl.com/2cxv5 or by using the link from my HOME page,
http://www.emovieposter.com or by looking me up under my eBay user ID,
emovieposter.com). Good luck on whatever you may bid on!

Re: [MOPO] MOPO/ two subjects by movpost starting with fake daybills

2005-01-17 Thread J R

Jack,

Believe it or not, I suspect are quite a few people just don't realize
that if they place the minimum bid it will knock out the Buy It Now option and
turn the auction into a standard one that will run out to its official end time.
But most are probably watching multiple items and trying to decide which they
will commit money to and which will have to be relegated to "maybe next time"
and so they don't want to place any bid until they either decide or see how they
fare on  items they have already placed bids on earlier. Most bidders don't
have unlimited funds and have to budget themselves. But you're right -- if the
Buy It Now is a real bargain and you want the item, you should snap it up before
someone else does.

You're also right about most items on eBay now selling with just one bidder
these days -- this is why I think it is funny when people complain about www.MoviePosterBid.com and say "well,
you don't have a large enough bidding audience to generate competitive bidding
on my items." As if competitive bidding was still something that happens with
most items on eBay. It just doesn't happen that much any more. MPB makes it
cheaper to set a high minimum or reserve or Buy It Now to make sure that you get
an acceptable price from that one bidder.

  movpost starting with fake daybills

  Hi MOPERS

Got to get back to an original discussion here. I have the famouse Carmen
Miranda daybill that the aussie Fan had reproduced because of his love for
Carmen Miranda. On an original daybill you will see a wax type backing which
was how the daybills were made so that the paper would withstand the stone
printing but the fake had regular paperlike backing. Nevertheless, it is a
beautiful poster and framed would make an awesome find so I put it on ebay at
12.95 so go look at probably the only real Aussie repro daybill, a rarity in
  itself at http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=3868063250&ssPageName=STRK:MESE:IT

And next let's talk about "watchers". You know those folks who add the
"add to my watch list" on eBay. I had Friday the 13th and Asylum on there for
low prices especially the buy it now. So as the day and night wore on I saw
the "watchers" gather, like the buzzards in the old Westerns. Fri the 13th had
5 or 6 watchers. Then suddenly BOOM! Someone saw the
ridiculous low price and bought both of them, knocking the "watchers" out of
the water. I don't know why anyone doesn't place an opening bid, knocking
out the buy it now and if someone bids higher then decide to bid again or
forget it. Usually these days most items go for the opening bid anyhow.
  Comments?

  Thanks

[MOPO] FS: House of Frankenstein, Touch of Evil and King of the Rocketmen

2005-01-17 Thread Fontaine Ayala

Hi All,
We have a few nice items available for sale.

A "House of Frankenstein" lobby card, original
issue.  This is the best scene card in the set.  It shows the Monster
on the table with Karloff and Chaney Jr. struggling.  It has been
paperbacked and had only a slight warp before the backing.

A "Touch of Evil" six sheet.  There is a
corner chip and some small border holes and pinholes.  The image
and art are crisp and in great shape.  This one never comes around.

A "King of the Rocketmen" R56 three sheet in
beautiful VF/NM condition.  This is the same basic art as the original
three sheet with stronger primary colors.  I like it better than the
original and have held onto it for years but there comes a time when only so
much big paper can go up on the wall.

Email us for jpeg images and to further
discuss condition and price.  Or call us during business hours at
(813) 249-1770.  Thanks in advance for your interest and for all your
kind words in the past.

Sincerely, Tom Hammond & Fontaine
