Sad! He probably dropped dead when he saw a preview of the new film which
looks like a joke. I was a huge fan of the original and it means a lot to me
- looking forward to seeing a remake but this one looks like its silly.

I am deeply saddened by this news. I was one of those fans who ran home from
school to watch Dark Shadows. I owned the entire 200 VHS collection, and
then purchased the entire collection on DVD and have watched it through 3
times now, all 1225 episodes. Thank goodness his fantastic work is available
for everyone to see. What a strange coincidence that this happens when the
new film comes out, at least he was offered a cameo. Jonathanfrid.com has
alot of great photos and was run by him until his death, for those who
enjoyed his work. I have a feeling he was not happy with the trailer for the
new film, as most fans are not. Rest in peace Jonathan!

[MOPO] OT: JULY 4TH LONG WEEKEND EBAY SALES?

2012-06-16 Thread Irvin J. Gelb
Hi Everyone,

Since July 4th lands smack in the middle of the week on Wednesday this year
do you think people will be taking a longer than usual holiday weekend
Wed/Thurs/Fri.? I'm wondering what to do with Ebay sales that week. If it's
a 5 day holiday there will be fewer than usual eyeballs on Ebay that
weekend.

What are the rest of you Ebayers doing July 4th week considering this?

Take care,

Yes, there have been a lot of scams since Ebay put the buyers in the
"driver's seat". Pisses me off and there is nothing we can do other than but
insurance for expensive items and self insure for lower priced items.

I recently sold a moderately expensive poster on Ebay ($150). I shipped
priority mail the next day. About a week later the buyer stated he hadn't
received the poster and asked for a tracking number. I checked the USPS
tracking information, which stated the poster had been delivered. I also
confirmed that I had sent to the right address.

When I offered the buyer replacement merchandise or a partial refund, he
immediately threatened an EBay/paypal dispute and associated negative
feedback.

I basically punted at that point -- but am following up with the local post
office to investigate what happened with the shipment.

Any similar experiences?

Thanks, Henry

[MOPO] MOVIE MEMORABILIA IN CARACAS VENEZUELA

2008-06-16 Thread Irvin J Gelb
Hi,

I'm going to visit Caracas, Venezuela next week and was wondering whether
anyone knows of any big collectors or stores there. I'd like to check out
their merchandise while there, if possible.

Many thanks,

[MOPO] TO AUCTION OR NOT TO AUCTION DURING 4TH OF JULY HOLIDAY

2008-06-17 Thread Irvin J Gelb
For those of us mere mortals who still have auctions on Ebay, please kindly
advise whether I should do my weekly Sunday auctions during the upcoming 4th
of July holiday weekend.

Are memorabilia collectors impervious to holidays and always searching for
good buys?

Or will the decreased eyeballs during that holiday weekend make it more
sense not to do a weekly auction then?

Thanks very much for your feedback.

Would someone really have been able to obtain all 9 of these signatures?

Seems kinda improbable (won't even touch the multiple copies he has).

Re: [MOPO] Here are the complete Seller Changes for EBAY starting in September, 2008 -- COMMENTS?

2008-08-20 Thread Irvin J Gelb
It's evident that they are pushing for a more Amazon.com style site to sell
commodity items rather than specialized/unique items like collectables. Also
pushing for lower prices hence Fleabay thrives and the collectable values
continue to plummet.
They should establish a spinoff of Ebay for the commodity items and separate
them from the higher value unique items.

***A Message from Lorrie Norrington: New Pricing, More
Incentives,
and Other Changes to Bring More Buyers***

August 20, 2008 | 07:04AM PST/PT

Hi everyone. As we head into the busiest shopping season of the year,
I want to let you know about some bold changes we're making on eBay to
lower your up-front costs and help you to sell more efficiently.
Combined with the improvements we're rolling out to deliver a more
consistent shopping experience this fall, buyers will see more
bargains than ever, and keep coming back to eBay to buy from you.

Listing fixed price items is more affordable than ever
We understand you have a lot of choices when it comes to selling
online. That's why we're changing our pricing to reduce your up-front
cost to sell and align with your success. Starting September 16, we
are lowering the listing fee for all items sold via the fixed price
format to only 35 cents, and a special rate of only 5 cents through
the end of the year for Buy It NowT fixed price listings in the Media
categories (Books, Video Games, Music and DVDs/Movies) using pre-
filled item information. (See our new Fixed Price fee structure here.)

Accordingly, we are shifting the majority of our costs for most
categories to the back end (final value fees), which you only pay if
you're successful in selling an item. In extremely competitive e-
commerce categories such as Consumer Electronics, Cameras and
Computers, we're decreasing final value fees. This means we're giving
you an even bigger incentive to list these types of items on eBay.

In addition to the pricing change, we're extending the listing
duration of all Buy It NowT fixed price listings to 30 days, up from
seven with an option for automatic renewal. For sellers whose items
that may take longer to sell, this change will be a huge cost
reduction and time saver. Taken together, these two big changes - 35
cents for up to 30 days - represent a 70 percent reduction in listing
fees on fixed price items.

As for Auction-style listings, we've decided not to make any changes.
We believe this format is already a good deal, especially when you
list with a low start price. Auctions will always have a place on eBay
- they are a proven way for sellers to get the best value for their
unique items, and they continue to receive significant exposure in
search as they are sorted primarily based on time ending soonest.

So that's the big news: 35 cents for 30 days. We're virtually
eliminating the up-front cost to list an item at fixed price on eBay.
And this is not a promotion - we are serious about making eBay the
most competitive marketplace online.

The changes we're making in pricing also mean great things for buyers.
As more merchandise comes onto the site, we're applying our search
technology in a way that will make their shopping easier, faster and
safer. Essentially, buyers will see the most relevant, best priced
inventory from our most trusted sellers - all of which allows them to
buy with confidence. And when buyers find and buy what they want for a
good price, you win.

Free shipping incentives in all categories, plus shipping charge
limits in Media
Shipping is an important factor for buyers as they shop online - and
expectations are higher than ever. Today, buyers want free or
reasonable shipping. So, if you're already offering free shipping on
items, we're going to reward you even more.

Beginning on October 1, 2008 and running through the end of the year,
all sellers will receive the option to use subtitle for free, worth $.
50 per listing, when free shipping is offered. And for eligible
PowerSellers, you will receive double your PowerSeller Final Value Fee
discount on these items, starting on the same date and running through
the end of the year when you offer free shipping - this is up to a 40%
discount! As always, items with free shipping will get a boost in Best
Match search results.

In addition to shipping incentives, we're introducing limits on
shipping and handling charges in one of our biggest and most
competitive categories, Media (Books, DVDs & Movies, Music and Video
Games).

This means that Media sellers will need to offer at least one shipping
option within th

Re: [MOPO] More eBay Frustrations

2008-08-20 Thread Irvin J Gelb
I agree Dave. Ebay should do that for us.(just dreaming here).

Another issue. A lot of buyers prefer to pay by check/money order. Many hate
using Paypal or just prefer the direct method by mail payment. Ebay's new
policy will cause us to lose a certain amount of business because some
buyers will just give up buying certain items on Ebay. How can Ebay do this
to the buyers and sellers?! Their action is so blatantly a move for them to
earn more revenue through their Paypal business. This is a major scandal and
should be reported by the press!

Not to mention, I BELIEVE if you have the wording in your write-up that you
accept cash, check or money order, Ebay will automatically remove those
listings.

This becomes a big deal if you have a lot of items in your turbo lister and
then you have to go in and change your write-up on EVERY item.

This is crazy.

well..up until now I've pretty much gone with the flow with ebays
changes.I've never seen what all the fuss and bitching was about. None
of the changes had any real drastic effect on me so I really didn't care.

until today.

they announced they will no longer allow sellers to accept checks or money
orders. Period.

I asked my rep if they will still allow direct bank wire transfersshe
said yes.

I then listened to the online webinar they just had that ended an hour ago
and asked them directly if wire transfers would be allowed, and they told me
NO.

so I'm not sure what the real answer isbut I'm guessing it is no.

if this is the case, I told them I would be removing my very valuable items
from my store. There is no way I'm allowing somebody to buy a $20,000.00
poster with paypal or a credit card. Its not even the fees that bother
me.its that lone dishonest buyer out there somewhere that will buy
something from mepay with a credit cardreceive the poster from
meand then claim I sent them an empty package.do a chargeback
dispute...and we all know the buyer wins every time.so that would
leave me screwed.

This happened to me once with about an $80.00 item several years agoand
there is no way as a seller you can prove you sent a poster and not an empty
box. The buyer will always win.

So there is no way I'm keeping my expensive items in my store and have ebay
force me to take a credit card or paypal for them. I don't mind keeping the
lesser valued items in there, but they are really shooting themselves in the
foot with this one.

granted...most of my high dollar items are sold off of ebaydirectly on
my website...so these new changes won't kill me.but it just pisses me
off that they could be so stupid.

anything sold on my site over $2000.00 must be paid for by cash, check,
money order, or wire transfer.

I asked this to ebay.will they force those who sell a $10,000 AUTOMOBILE
on ebay to take paypal or credit cards for the entire amount? They said no,
they will still allow checks.

why should autos get an exemption?

what about all the other high end collectibles on ebay that routinely sell
for several thousand dollarscoins, stamps, baseball cards, comics, movie
and music memoribilia?? They are forcing all these sellers to accept paypal
or credit cards.unless of course the buyer can pick it up in
personthen they can pay in cash or by check.

I'm officially jumping on the bandwagon.ebay is run by full retards.
(apologies to tropic thunder).

[MOPO] FEEDBACK GHOST STRIKES

2008-09-03 Thread Irvin J Gelb
Everyone is going to think that I'm crazy but believe me this is happening.

I just found out that there is a glitch in Ebay's system that automatically
gives positive feedback to customers (at least mine) when I haven't done so.
This is the story.

I always leave feedback for a buyer when they leave me feedback. I go to the
"Feedback Profile" page to view their feedback then click on "view listing"
so that I can then click on the "Leave Feedback" line. In some cases there
is no "Leave Feedback" line in the listing so, I have to admit it, I've been
lazy and have not left feedback for those buyers.

Recently one buyer specifically asked me NOT to leave feedback for them
after they left feedback for me. I complied. I then received a furious email
from the buyer complaining that I left feedback. But I didn't. To make a
long story short, after talking with Ebay today we discovered that for some
reason it's system has been leaving the default comment positive feedback
for the listings that I didn't leave feedback for. We don't know when this
happened exactly at the moment.

Their Tech team is starting to review this glitch to find out if it happened
to other sellers and why/when it's happening to me.

Has anyone experienced this? If you're like me and a bit lazy sometimes to
leave feedback for your buyers please check your "feedback profile" page to
see if what happened to me happened to you.

Very strange..

[MOPO] POSTER SALES

2008-09-05 Thread Irvin J Gelb
Hi Richard,
When you invited us to join your new poster auction site you never
responded. I thought that you didn't receive my email but now it's come to
my attention that you are jealous of my successful results with Profiles in
History last year. I have more posters in my collection and just wanted to
help you out by bringing some high end titles and see how we could do

that you show such keen jealousy - I thought that your site's intention was
to bring more sellers to help build up the business. Unfortunate and
perplexing that you're taking another position. I can't understand why the
results of my Profiles auction would have anything to do with selling more
posters on your site.

Sean is one of my very best friends and he is always welcome to sell..
other people who have supported me are also welcome.. but at this

one reality is that even if people sell a million bucks worth.. it

but I have a question for you.. if Profiles did so well for you.. why
aren't they selling more of your stuff???

You know Irvin, your email has so many incorrect statements I can't hardly
point them out, but I'll try

first of all, I'm not sure what you mean when you say "invited us to join"
I don't believe I sent you any special invitation to do anything, though I
did in 2006 and again in 2007 and again earlier this year advertise that I
am open for dealers who wished to get away from fleabay and sell on MPB.
Unfortunately, no one wanted to, no matter how much griping they were going
to do about fleabay and at some point I decided that having MPB open to
sellers I did not know personally may not be the right direction for me to
take the site. As such, there is no link to request seller status on
MoviePosterBid.

I will of course happily look at requests from people on a one-on-one basis

But because the fees are so low at MPB, I realized that even if other
dealers sell the lofty goal of $1,000,000 in sales.. I only get $35,000,
which begged the question "do I really want sellers at all?"
after all, I might have to hire someone to deal with all the problems for
dealers & buyers which would wipe out any value - if $35,000 was much of a
value to begin with - and to have competitors for my own auctions is
probably also a negative.

Phil Edwards said "There is, however, little doubt that MPB is now presented
with its greatest opportunity to function as a specialist poster (and
comics/pulps etc) site and build its functionality to allow professional and
full time dealers to utilize its interface to a fuller advantage" and for
professional, full time dealers the site is still open, on the one-on-one
basis. There are definitely dealers who have no chance of ever listing
anything on my website because I may not trust them, because their
reputation stinks, or even because I just don't care for them. The Phil
Edwards's, Channing Thompsons, Bruce Hershensons, Moe Everetts and Grey
Smiths will always be allowed to sell on MoviePosterBid

I have a feeling, because of your rude behavior.. that Irvin Gelb will never
be allowed to sell

But there's more.. You sent me the link to your poster listings at fleabay..
Hey, if you think your prices are some kind of bargains.. then you better
start looking at people's results again, and then come to the conclusion
that your prices are way over the top for anyone

concerning your belief that I am jealous of your sales at Profiles in
History...

LMMFAO

You have to be kidding.. I could care less what you or any other gets for
anything. Big effin deal what you got.
My question was more along the lines of "what could this schmuck have been
unhappy about with Profiles that he wants to sell the stuff himself?" Of
course I know.. it's because even on your Wasp Woman poster you think that
the astronomical result wasn't good enough for you. and for absolute
clarity.. the only person on earth I'm jealous of.. is Michelle Pfeiffer's
husband

Look.. there's an old line "you slow, you blow"
I tried to tell people that "fleabay is headed in the wrong place for you
and that you should join MPB now"
you didn't come, and now the door is locked.. suck it up

one more thing.. the fact that you took my private response and posted it to
MoPo means you wanted to - in your tiny little mind - try to embarrass me in
some way. The only thing you succeeded in was embarrassing yourself, and
getting yourself told off to boot

now go back to your little corner and stand there until poppa says you can
come out and have dinner

best Regards
Rich=

Hi Bruce,

Nice to hear from you.

Yes, I did realize the prices that were published and they paid me promptly
for everything less a very reasonable/negotiated commission. It was a
pleasure to work with them.

As a matter of my standard business practice, I like to work with different
companies so that I don't put all my eggs in one basket. When I received
Richard's invitation to join his auction site I saw it as a potential
alternative to Ebay so I attempted to contact him for more information.

That's it - very simple.

I've purchased from you Bruce with excellent results and would, of course,
consider to work with you one day.

I have no dog in this race, but I think I can easily address one small part
of this. I, and I am sure many others, have seen some of the sky-high
results at Profiles in History (last year and others) and have wondered if
all of those sales were consummated, and if so, if it was at the listed
prices.

Given that you were a known consignor of some of those pieces that had
reported sky-high results, can you confirm for us that in all cases you
received those amounts (less their commissions)?

And if so, I think the question on everyone's lips is, why would you then
consign anywhere else? And if not, I think the question on everyone's lips
is, why don't they set the record straight and reveal what did sell, and at
what prices?

I am sorry for all the ill feelings this topic has generated, but I would
love to know the answer to the above questions, and if they are answered,

help you out by bringing some high end titles and see how we could do
together. I was also going to refer other big collectors to you. How odd
that you show such keen jealousy - I thought that your site's intention was
to bring more sellers to help build up the business. Unfortunate and
perplexing that you're taking another position. I can't understand why the
results of my Profiles auction would have anything to do with selling more

Hi Irv

I did get your emails

right now, I'm not adding any sellers
Sean is one of my very best friends and he is always welcome to sell..
other people who have supported me are also welcome.. but at this
point, I'd rather have the site for just a few people

one reality is that even if people sell a million bucks worth.. it
isn't worth alot to me based on % and so I prefer to not really have
competitors

but I have a question for you.. if Profiles did so well for you.. why
aren't they selling more of your stuff???

Hi Marty,

I ship either USPS first class or priority. Then I purchase the auctiva.com
insurance that the buyer paid for (included in the shipping cost).

Irv:
I think you are confused. You cannot ship parcels to International
destinations by FIRST CLASS INTERNATIONAL shipping, with insurance.
INSURANCE is NOT an option. To insure parcels to International destinations
by the USPS you need to ship by PMI (Priority Mail International), or
Express Mail International.

Marty,

I'm not that happy with Auctiva because they have many tech problems all the
time. But, I'm kind of tied to them for the moment because I have all my
templates with them.

For some reason Ebay hasn't clamped down on third party listers but they
probably will because they are losing revenue from image listing which is
free with auctiva.

I assume you must need to use Auctiva as a listing tool to qualify for their
insurance? I changed to TurboLister, when eBay discontinued Sellers
Assistant Pro. I'm not enamored with Turbo Lister, but I don't really want
to change. I'm surprised that eBay still allows the use of other listing
tools. Do others think this is a policy that will continue, or may change?

In my case, if they claim that they didn't receive it they paid for
insurance and get their money - no questions asked. Simpler than making a

Subject: [MOPO] Last Chance to Sign Up as Seller on MPB

Okay Folks

I see all the griping about FleaBay
I've been reading the gripes for months now since they announced all
the things you hate began happening

Well, I'm going to give sellers one last chance to register at
MoviePosterBid.com

Why do I say "Last Chance" ?

It's because I have been seriously considering turning MPB private
for moths now and I think I have finally reached the point where I'm
going to be making my final decision.

Why would I want to turn the site "private" ?
To be honest, during the past 2 years since I bought the site I
really haven't had very many sellers come over. I understand that
many sellers feel the site wasn't ready for them to come over, but
now that I've been running my 99 cents no reserve auctions
successfully for 60 weeks, I really don't think that the issues
preventing sellers from signing up exist anymore. None the less, if
sellers don't want to migrate to MPB, there isn't any reason for MPB
to continue to make seller status available.

Does fleaBay have more buyers.. well yes it does.. But who says you
have to leave them behind? You can indeed list at both sites & I
doubt you will find a detriment to it.

Also, I'm not exactly cutting off all seller registrations. I'm going
to be dividing MPB into two sections
1) 99 cent no reserve auctions (my auctions)
2) MPB Stores (all other sellers except for during special event auctions)

Future sellers will only be those that are invited and those that
have supported MPB in the past.
By limiting the sellers in this way, I can be sure that only 100%
honest sellers have material listed and of course that reduces
problematic issues that both collectors and administration have to deal with

At Cinevent I will be having extensive design & architecture
discussions with my programmer as we continue to redesign the site,
and we will announce these improvements afterward, but for now you
just have to answer one question.

Do you or do you not want to be selling Movie Posters at the only
site devoted strictly to Cinemaphiles?

Please note: I will be vetting any member who wishes to get seller
status and also I have begun deleting seller status for members who
haven't signed on for a long time.. I will continue that process
during this transition period. So consider this a final invitation.

Sign up now... or forever hold your fleaBay

[MOPO] EBAY PRESIDENTIAL LEVEL HELP NUMBER

2008-09-13 Thread Irvin J Gelb
Some of you may know about this already but I thought that others would like
this information. I recently had a serious problem with negative feedback
from a bad Ebayer and the regular Feedback review staff did not listen to my
valid arguments for removing it. Through some investigation I found a
telephone number at the President's office in Utah where I could speak to
someone working for the President who helped me at his level that might have
a positive result for me.

If you have any critical problems that the regular Ebay staff cannot handle
to your satisfaction I suggest that you call this number to ask for help at
the highest level:

801-545-2055 (tell the operator which department you are having trouble with
and they will connect you with the correct person in the President's office)

By the way, I have top level 1950s SciFi posters up for auction on Ebay at
very reasonable prices that end on Sunday night. Please kindly check them

Hi,

Last night and last Sunday night I listed many new items from signed lobby
cards to signed letters but the cream of the crop is an Everlast signed gloves
by the All Star Great Boxers of the 20th Century including ALI, FRAZIER,
FOREMAN, HOLLYFIELD, HOLMES, PATTESON and many more. Since some collectors are
skeptical about signed sports memorabilia of this caliber I obtained a PSA/DNA
certification in addition to mine. This is truly a one-of-a-kind sports
treasure which I HIGHLY recommend!

Enjoy looking at the glove and all of the other items ending before the 4th of

Hi,
How are you?

I know that I've been saying this a lot lately but this is another week of
amazing rare and remarkable memorabilia that I listed on Ebay such as:

- Rare exhibition custom photograph of JOAN CRAWFORD photographed and signed by
CECIL BEATON. I, personally, have never seen this image for the shoot.

- Incredibly rare panoramic vintage 1913 photograph of CECIL B. DEMILLE and the
cast/crew of the first full length western film in Hollywood - THE SQUAW MAN.
This is a museum worthy piece!

- Handwritten depostion for the MICKEY HARGITARY VS. MAE WEST 1956 lawsuit that
includes a lot of incredible content giving us an inside look into what
happened behind the scenes when Miss West was doing her nightclub act. You
won't be able to put it down!

- A very early ARTHUR FREED triple signed contract for one of his first
productions.

- A RICHARD AVEDON original contact photograph of MARILYN MONROE from their
1957 photo shoot.

Actually, I recommend that you look at everything that I have listed this week
- they are all incredible:

Hi,
How are you?

My auctions tomorrow evening. There are still many incredible buys for rare
items. I highly recommend:

- THE SQUAW MAN original vintage panoramic photograph
- MAE WEST'S MYRA BRECKINRIDGE contract amendment signed.
- The MAE WEST - MICKEY HARGITAY court documents. The handwritten deposition by
Charles Krauser is a one-of-a-kind incredibly important document as it reveals
the goings on behind the scenes at Miss West's muscleman shows.
- W.C. HANDY inscribed and signed sheet music to MISS MAE WEST
- 3 time signed ARTHUR FREED very early talent contract for one of his first
shows.
- an EXTREMELY RARE CECIL BEATON handwritten 6 page letter. These are very rare
and this one reveals a lot of information about his life.

These and more are still available for very low prices. Thank you for looking
again.

Regards,
irv

Hi,
How are you?

RON GALELLA is, in my opinion, the best paparazzi photographer of all time and
this week I listed an original gelatin silver photograph that he took of ANDY
WARHOL signed by Mr. Galella. I really love this item and highly recommend it.

I also dug through my collection of the personal collection of MAE WEST that I
own and found two gems. First is a letter written and signed by BASIL RATHBONE
to Miss West and an original registered Death Certificate for Miss West.

Also, by accident, I discovered that a 1959 Twentieth Century Fox promotional
book has photographs of MARILYN MONROE , JAYNE MANSFIELD , ELVIS PRESLEY and 58
more stars who Fox was promoting as being part of the studio's roster that year.

Hi,

More wonderful vintage original photographs of our dear Marilyn up on Ebay
this week. Yesterday I attended the 100th birthday party for Beverly Hills
on Rodeo Drive and could not believe how many people were wearing shirts
with a Marilyn Monroe image on it - young and old. In my opinion, Marilyn
will be the ONLY actress to have everlasting longevity for centuries to
come. No one comes close to having the "IT" factor that she possesses that
transcends her acting career.

Enjoy this week's selections - some great ones again!

showing a bottle of Chanel No. 5 sitting on her night table with her
supposedly nude in bed. I really love this photograph and more up this week.
Below are previews - enjoy!

Hi,

How are you doing?

ANTHONY BEAUCHAMP is one of my favorite photographers to have shot MARILYN
MONROE. His photo shoots were so real to who she was and reaked of pure
sensuality. This week I have an image that was taken for a popular men's
magazine in the 1950s. It was taken on a shag rug that was placed on a table
next to a railing that was shaded out by the magazine. These shots,
authentic to who Marilyn was, are some of my favorites taken of her.

I have some great original vintage photographs up for auction this week -
below are previews.

Hi,

How are you doing?

One of the most iconic images of MARILYN MONROE is when she and JANE RUSSELL
cemented their foot and hand prints at GRAUMAN'S CHINESE THEATER to promote
their film "GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES". This week I have one of the actual
original vintage photographs used by the press to report this event with a
part of the newspaper article showing the photograph still adhered to the

On July 2, 1962 MARILYN MONROE was coaxed into doing what became her last

photographed Marilyn during a shoot that showed her exhibiting a myriad of
emotions not seen since her Ben & Sid Ross "Emotions" shoot in 1953. I have one

Hi,

How are you doing?

Last week was the anniversary of MARILYN MONROE's death. I just put up a
photograph taken at the funeral that was used by the press. Starting yesterday
the price for all buy-it-now items in my store were reduced by 20% including
the cemetery plot at Westwood Memorial that I am offering for my friend. This
is the only four family plot located in the coveted area where Marilyn rests.

More great photographs up for auction this week which you can check out below.
Enjoy the rest of the summer!

Regards,

Irv Gelb

Re: [MOPO] Slabbed photos?

2014-08-11 Thread Irvin J. Gelb
Hi,
I totally agree with Jim. I think that it's ridiculous to slab photographs
which I call a "plastic prison". Photograph collectors want to admire the
beauty of a photograph by seeing the patina, feel of the paper, etc.
IMO it's only because of a dealer's desire to make more money out of
"authenticating" and slabbing photographs that this practice exists. I am
against it as an admirer of vintage photography.

Any opinions on slabbed photos pro or con? I personally would rather hold,
feel, maybe even smell the paper to determine its vintage. I see absolutely
no advantage to slabbing at all. Thoughts?
Thanks

[MOPO] OT: MY ANNUAL SUMMER SALE HAS STARTED ON EBAY

2014-08-12 Thread Irvin J. Gelb

MY MOVIE MEMORABILIA & MORE

Hi,

How are you?

I am paralyzed with sadness and it is with a profoundly heavy heart that I
write you this message. Robin Williams was one of the most uniquely special
people who has been able to touch the hearts of millions. He was one of my
favorites with Mrs. Doubtfire causing me to go into an asthma attack in the
movie theater because I was laughing so hysterically. One year at the Sundance
Film Festival I saw an empty seat next to Robin during a screening of a movie
and he warmly invited me to sit next to him. This led to 2 hours of non stop
talking/whispering/laughing which was followed by people around us shushing us
which then made us laugh even more. He was a warm person with a genius that
will never be matched. G-d rest his soul...

Well, back to memorabilia I guess. I just started a month-long sale of all
items in my store so please check it out when you have some time. Also up are

[MOPO] OT: YOU TOO CAN SMELL LIKE STEVE MCQUEEN...OR AT LEAST HOW HE WOULD HAVE WANTED TO SMELL LIKE!

2011-05-30 Thread Irvin J. Gelb
Yes, if you'd like to smell like deceased movie legend Steve McQueen you
can! Thanks to his family someone has formulated the first "flavor" (that's
their reference - are you supposed to take a swig of the stuff?) that will
duplicate the Steve McQueen scent. Check out their web site:

http://www.stevemcqueen-perfumes.com/index.html

Rush to get a bottle before Matt Damon buys them all and while you're
surfing the net be sure to check out my great Hollywood auctions (none that
smell though).

Re: [MOPO] FS: selling June 2011 Profile in History Catalogue & other posters/catalogues

2011-06-02 Thread Irvin J. Gelb
In my humble opinion, the majority of the current public is not interested
in old Hollywood costumes or props. That's one of the main reasons why
Debbie has not been able to consummate a deal for a museum. In another life
I was an executive at an entertainment company and had dealings with Debbie
and her son about financing a museum in Hollywood. Personally, I would love
to see one, in addition to the well done Hollywood Museum in the old Max
Factor building, but they are also having trouble bringing in enough
visitors to make a profitable business out of it. Therefore, I'm afraid the
current market dictates that die hard fans like us become the proud owners
of these collectibles without there being one great museum to display them.

MY MOVIE MEMORABILIA & MORE

Hi,

How are you?

SAM SHAW is one of the iconic photographers of the 20th Century and I really
like the almost candid photographs that he took of MARILYN MONROE and ARTHUR
MILLER on the streets of New York City in 1957 and I put up one of his images
that was press used. More great Monroe photographs up this week, a signed
LAUREN BACALL photograph and Ryan put up some really nice IRV STEINBERG 1960s
photographs and original camera negatives including LAUREN BACALL, MARLON

Hi,

How are you doing?

Marilyn was frequently photographed leaving or arriving at airports and I
really like those images. Who else but Marilyn could make a simple shot taken
on stairs going to a plane look so good. This week I have a rare MANFRED
KREINER doubleweight photograph of her during the SOME LIKE IT HOT promo tour.

More great images up this week with previews below.

Hi,

How are you doing?

One of my favorite photo shoots of Marilyn is the one that ED FEINGERSH did
during the course of one week in New York City early in 1955. It was a
photo-journalistic essay of her public and private activities during the course
of one week when she was in the midst of breaking her contract with 20th
Century Fox. His images show real emotions such as the pensive one that I
listed last night. You can see a preview of this, a great Powolny and others
below.

Hi,

How are you doing?

Five new MARILYN MONROE photographs up for auction this week per the below
previews. While listing these I contemplated about the one of her at the TWA
plane and recalled Pan Am in my early days of flying. I remember looking
forward to going on a plane trip with the great food and excitement of being
treated like someone special. Boy has travel changed in a few decades! Oh well,
I could say "those were the good old days" but I'll be positive and accept
change. Maybe I should try one of those space flights coming up next year
before they get to be a common thing!

MY MOVIE MEMORABILIA & MORE

Hi,

How are you?

Besides collecting autographs I love vintage Hollywood photography and have
many from the Golden Era of Hollywood. This week Ryan put up 20 images from my
collection. Many are in near mint condition and double-weight linen backed
former studio master file images. Photographers include Hurrell, Bachrach, Ruth
Harriett Louise, Powolny, Dyar, Lippman and Apger. Some of the personalities
this week are:

- ANNA MAY WONG

- GUY MADISON

- GYPSY ROSE LEE

- SUSAN HAYWARD

- GENE TIERNEY

- NORMA SHEARER

- JOEL MCCREA

- LUCILLE BALL

- WILLIAM HOLDEN

- CONSTANCE BENNETT & more

I highly recommend these not only because they come from my collection but
because they are beautiful examples of Hollywood's vintage photography.

I put up a fantastic multi-signed photograph of the Hollywood sign including
DIETRICH, BACALL, STEWART, TIERNEY, GISH, VINCENT PRICE, GENE KELLY, MYRNA LOY
and others - highly recommended!

LOUISE BROOKS is one of the most iconic stars of early cinema and known for her
bigger than life personality. This week I put up a signed letter that she wrote
to her biographer which includes personal and interesting content.

More great items up this week - here are some previews:

[MOPO] OT: IS MARILYN MONROE THE MOST BEAUTIFUL WOMAN IN HOLLYWOOD HISTORY?

Hi,

How are you doing?

Last night I met with one of my long term customers for the first time and we
started talking about Marilyn. What is real beauty? Was Marilyn Monroe a
"beautiful" woman in the classic sense? According to the standards of her day
or today? Yes, the "Hollywood machine" helped to create the image of what most
people perceive to be the beautiful Marilyn that is more well known. On the
other hand, some would say that Norma Jeane's original look was fresh and had
"real" beauty. We saw one of Andre de Dienes' early photographs of Marilyn,
during her Norma Jeane days, staring up to the sunlight on the beach with
relatively little makeup and covered with a blanket - not the typical glamour
shot. That photograph, to me, is an example of being able to see her true
beauty - the inner soul that was so pure, full of love and yet self-tortured.
One of her key attributes is the beauty that emanates from within, the "je ne
sais quoi" that so few of us have. The "IT" factor. Yes, her outer appearance
morphed into what many deem to be the epitomy of "Hollywood" beauty. But many
have attempted to copy that look and could not because of the inner qualities
that Marilyn had and they lacked. It was a pleasure looking at my photographs
with my customer - that is one of the best things about being a collector -
sharing your treasures with others.

Five new Marilyn photographs were put up last Sunday - enjoy the previews below.

Regards,

Irv Gelb

Hi,

How are you doing?

I have to admit that sometimes I get stumped identifying some of my MARILYN
MONROE photographs. When I'm in this situation who do I call? DAVID WILLS to
the rescue! David is one of the most successful authors of coffee table books
in today's market and is a Monroe expert. He helped me this week identify my
rare EARL THEISEN original vintage contact photographic print taken in 1952 in
her 20th Century Fox dressing room. Thanks David! If you haven't seen his now
classic book MARILYN MONROE: METAMORPHOSIS I highly recommend it - truly a work
of art.

This week I put up pretty incredible vintage Marilyn photographs - previews
below!

MY MOVIE MEMORABILIA & MORE

Hi,

How are you?

I recently acquired two major collections that I am excited about. The first is
a near mint collection of film studio key book stills and double-weight
original vintage photographs. Included in this collection are some of the most
beautiful examples of GENE KELLY photographs that I've ever owned. this week I
put up one of these that was used as a publicity still for the film 'COVER
GIRL".

I also have a collection of autographs and letters that belonged to MARY-JESSMA
WILSON, a radio interviewer of movie stars during WWII for what I believe could
be the first mall in America - WEBB'S CITY. Up for auction this week is a page
from her scrapbook with CHARLEY GRAPEWIN's autograph on one side and JUDY
GARLAND's autograph on the other (not overlapping each other). I also have a
great letter from TYRONE POWER and EDWARD G. ROBINSON to her.

Ryan put up some great oversize vintage photographs and more - previews are
below - enjoy!

Hi,

How are you doing?

This week I put up the iconic image of Marilyn that ED FEINGERSH took of her
with the Chanel cologne bottle. I really love the images from his shoots with
her as they show her really acting to the camera in a very natural way.

I have a question for you. I put up a photograph of her with a young man
apparently showing her a turtle neck sweater. Do you know what this is all
about? Email me please.

You can check out these and more photographs that I have on Ebay this week
through the below links. Thanks!
