So I thought this board should be made aware of what I got in the mail
today. Some how, one of my friends at Paramount added me to the
Paramount Press List.

So far I have received a INDY JONES BULL WHIP with a copy of the trailer.

Then today, I got a poster tube with 4 posters in it.

The letter said I was receiving a copy of the Original Indy Jones and the
Crystal Skull poster. And I was getting, "Commemorative" posters of the
the other 3 films.

You look at them and they are single sided and look like the originals.
The only thing I can see is no NSS number on the RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK
poster. They are all rolled.

Keep an eye out for a bunch of perfect rolled Indy posters hitting the
market.

What a mess.

Ira

Re: [MOPO] 606 people have looked at my EBAY item?

2008-03-07 Thread Phil Edwards Cinema Arts
E*ay counters are completely unreliable.

On many occasions I have uploaded items and gone and had a look within
a couple of minutes, and there has been anything up to 20 hits on some things,
3 on others 10 on others and so on.

The thing has been there less than 2 minutes and 20 people have gone and looked?
I don't think so. On one occasion I was intrigued enough to look at 50 items
just uploaded, and everything had exactly 8 hits on it.

I believe it's random and done simply to "encourage" sellers that their stuff
is being looked and has interest when we all know that real e*ay business has
dropped dramatically (and folks some of us sell in other than movie posters, or
have colleagues who work in other areas to compare notes with).

Anybody who runs a counter on their site knows you can make a counter run up
any pre-determined number per click, so you visit a website and their counter
says 1,228,566 er, yes

Maybe the numbers of people who look at sheet music are much higher
than movie posters. Movie posters are very specialized. As much as
the hobby has grown, it really hasn't grown enough. 15 years ago,
when Sothebys and Christies were having their first auctions there
was a sense in the collecting community that movie posters were
about to go BIG TIME. The hobby has grown, but I don't think
it has lived up to many expectations from that time.

I bet if you could peek at ebay's master "traffic counter"
you would see that there are many collectibles that draw
  far more lookers.

This is just my hunch, not something which I know for a fact.

Re: [MOPO] Lack of courtesy among DEALERS/COLLECTORS asking for WANTS

2008-03-07 Thread Phil Edwards Cinema Arts
I have been astonished lately at the number of people asking for highly
detailed specifics on something you have, wanting to see high resolution jpegs,
sizes to the mm, and etc, and not having the courtesy to simply say, "Thanks
for taking the time, but no thanks."

Over the past few months I've weeded out the folks who I will reply to on a WTB
simply based on past performance of that simple courtesy when I've responded in
the past. I call it the "Dick List".

I recently had reason to reply to Sam Sarowitz's request for something, and in
both cases while the deal never happened he got back to me straight away with a
simple, "thanks for the time you spent, Best, Sam" - something in my
experience Sam always does.

Doesn't take much and certainly means that Sam won't be going on the "Dick
List" anytime soon, even if we never did another deal.

Ironically, many of the WTBs (whether on MOPO or as private mail-outs) are for
stuff that is either coming up soon on a major auction, or something that just
sold for better than expected results somewhere.

For the dealers and collectors posting WANTS on MoPo who don't have the

offering you your exact wants, I WILL NOT be responding to your WANT LISTS

Many do reply such as David Lieberman, but in the last couple of weeks I have

  Susan Heim wrote:
Hello Everyone,

As you may recall a couple of months ago I ask all of you for
information on your websites, etc. so that I could include it on my updated
website. Well the website is now uploaded. Please take a minute to look. We
have added all kinds of new frame sizes and different options. The most
important changes are the "multipack" specials and the "free shipping" offers.
We have been negotiating with our shippers for several months. We have seen our
volume of shipping grow incredibly in the past 3 years and wanted our shipping
company, Fedex, to recognize that with some shipping discounts. In addition,
this past year, Fedex has instituted new guidelines on boxes that were
considered oversize before, but are now just regular shipping boxes charged by
weight and not by size.

As we always have, the frames are at wholesale cost to you and now
with the free shipping offers on the majority of the frames we offer, that
combination is even better!

We have some new frame styles available, including the Marquis Frame
with a Now Showing or Coming Soon banner. The banners are even sold separately
to hang with your existing frames. Many of you already have this frame from me,
but this is the first I have shown it on the website.

Please take a moment to look at the website. If you have any comments
or questions, please don't hesitate to call or email me. I appreciate any
input. We designed the site to be as user friendly as possible, but we are
framers and sometimes things may be listed or worded in a way that is confusing
to non framers.

In addition, if you have any further information that you would like
me to include on my links page, please let me know. My links are under the "our
friends" category.

So, thanks for taking a look.

Fairy tales are often very dark (whole books have been written on the
subject, but the names of the classic texts escape me right now), so
Disney was not really doing anything new, just continuing a tradition.

Interesting out of that list, Rich, that OLD YELLER which we can add to it, was
the only one I saw as a young child.

All the others I saw either in late teens or even later for the first time. We
also used to see them carved up in chunks/sequences on DISNEYLAND in the early
60s. Periodically, I get the impression that export version of DISNEYLAND was
quite different to the US domestic one. There seemed uncanny tie-ins to
"specials" that coincided with local Australian releases of new Disney product.

Dear Cris

There are 3 different versions of the quad - 2 teasers and a final. The 2
teasers have increasingly more artwork that leads to the final full
version. You might want any prospective seller to show you pictures in advance.

[MOPO] F/A: The Glass Key - Linen-backed, original Richardson Daybill

2007-11-12 Thread Phil Edwards Cinema Arts
Hi All,
Considered among the best of the 1940s Richardson Studio daybills, THE GLASS
KEY has the added attraction of being a major film noir from the period and
along with THIS GUN FOR HIRE and THE BLUE DAHLIA, Alan Ladd's seminal tough guy
role.

Fabulous and vibrant art featuring Ladd, Veronica Lake and Brian Donlevy and
with creator Dashiell Hammett's name an important part of the title treatment,
it's a poster for noir aficionados, and those with a literary bent for
collecting 20th Century classic American writers' ephemera.

Re: [MOPO] Strange doings in Bruce's auctions

2007-09-26 Thread Phil Edwards Cinema Arts
There appears to be an ongoing problem, Bruce, and all other sellers, that
remains to be fixed.

We have just received a (legit) eBay message indicating exactly what Bruce
describes in his post.

This was for one item, sold from our eBay store and paid for immediately via
PP just in the last few hours. The buyer is legit, the PP payment is legit.
But the item no longer exists because eBay has removed it. The buyer is
still there, and nothing in his feedback and buying patterns indicate
anything untoward at all.

Presumably one ships the item to the buyer and hopes that eBay manages to
fix what is clearly a serious problem.

Outside of Auctionbytes and online forums, is this being reported elsewhere?
Apparently eBay is curtailing much discussion on its own boards. Check the
Auctionbytes articles for regular updates on that.

Folks - if you haven't already, go get those passwords changed PDQ.
Something very, very strange is going on and it appears to be at an
international level, not just the US site.

While we are steadily phasing our movie paper dealings off the venue and
doing the majority of our real business through our website, such matters
are time consuming and tedious to deal with - especially when the messages
tell one DO NOT REPLY TO THIS MESSAGE.

Go back and enjoy the rest of the holiday, Bruce eBay and it's attendant
issues will still be there when you return, unfortunately.

Regards,
Phil & Mila

Subject: Re: [MOPO] Strange doings in Bruce's auctions

Boy! I try to close down for two weeks and enjoy a very RARE vacation, and
eBay pulls yet another of its major blunders!

Here is the story: The auctions in question were all won by a single
buyer. That person is a very major collector of memorabilia of all kinds,
and literally buys hundreds of items many weeks. Someone who this person
bought from did not get any reply from that person, likely because their
e-mails were filtered out by a spam filter (anyone who sends lots of
e-mails knows this is a growing problem). So they panicked and requested
the buyer's phone number, and when they could not reach them that way,
they reported them to eBay.

Now, had this happened during the week, the person at eBay receiving the
report would have had the brains and the experience to know that this
meant nothing bad, and they would have made an effort to contact the major
collector themselves, and, at the very worst, they would have suspended
the account, to make sure the collector would notice it, and contact eBay
to get reinstated.

But because this happened on the weekend (coincidentally, the day after I
closed for two weeks), the report went to some weekend employee of eBay,
likely an ex-burger flipper. This person read what had happened, and put
two and two together and got 22, and decided this was a classic "hijack".
They cancelled ALL the major collector's current bids, and, for good
measure, cancelled ALL the major collector's bids from the past thirty
days, which meant EVERY auction that collector had bid in was now wiped
from the eBay system (55 of my recently closed auctions, and hundreds more
from other sellers)!

This triggers the e-mail EVERY single person bidding on any of those
auctions received (including many MoPo members). The e-mail states that
the auction was cancelled and gives the impression that the buyer or the
seller did something wrong, when actually the ONLY one who did anything
wrong was eBay itself!

Now one wonders what senior person at eBay made the decision to give a
person in this position THIS MUCH POWER! They did not have to consult
anyone, they did not have to verify anything, and, this is not at all out
of the ordinary, for, as senior eBay employees have told me in the past,
eBay's Trust & Safety Department likes to "shoot first and ask questions
later"!

What will happen now? Well, since the person IS a completely legitimate
buyer, and since all the auctions have been paid for, and the items sent,
there is nothing needs to be done there. But the only way for eBay to
reach those bidders is to reinstate the closed auctions, for they no
longer have a record of the bidders and can only get them back by
reinstating the auctions. So they will reinstate the auctions and send out
very carefully worded e-mails to those who got the first one that
basically say, "Sorry, move on, nothing to see here" without in any way
admitting they did anything wrong, and without in any way admitting that
the buyer and sellers did nothing wrong.

So I will have to waste a bunch of my time answering e-mails and letters,
telling this same story over and over, and likely there will be a few
wacky people who think there is a cover-up of some kind. All the more
reason I eagerly look forward to the day when I am no longer an eBay
sell

[MOPO] FA: Spectacular and Rare 3 sheets from cinemarts

2007-08-25 Thread Phil Edwards Cinema Arts
Good Day MoPo,

This week we are offering some spectacular and rarely seen Australian three
sheets for such classics as THEM!, FORBIDDEN PLANET, LAWRENCE OF ARABIA and
THE LONGEST DAY, along with US three sheets from MYSTERIOUS MR WONG, and the
Realart re-release of the INVISIBLE MAN.

Unlike the US large paper, the THEM! is a full colour and vibrantly inked three
sheet, with spectacular giant bug action, and in near pristine unused
condition, and the LAWRENCE presents stunning art, beautifully inked and in
immaculate condition.

We have several other linen backed one sheets on offer, including the gorgeous
litho of MAN FROM LARAMIE, one of the best Anthony Mann/James Stewart westerns
and a superbly produced hand litho and iconic western image to accompany it.

We are also offering what is perhaps the rarest format on the Val Lewton horror
classic, I WALKED WITH A ZOMBIE, the US 14x36 insert.

Our user ID is cinemarts if this link doesn't work.

Re: [MOPO] German film posters

2007-08-23 Thread Phil Edwards Cinema Arts
You would hard pressed to find a more anti-Nazi household than ours, and I have
to say that this is one of the most fascinating books of a lost chunk of movie
poster history that I have ever seen and is a superb and lasting reference.

The book has no political posturing, it simply presents the posters and the
history in which they were created within their historical context. The
inclusion of translations of the then Nazi ruling party doctrine on censorship
and subject matter allowed and not allowed puts the posters themselves into
perspective and pretty much damns them just as much as any government
propaganda machines did on any side in any war.

If you are really seriously interested in all aspects of movie posters
throughout all areas of film history, these guys have produced the real deal.
It really is packed with posters that you will never ever see any other way,
and maybe never again.

  Dear Collectors and Dealers,
Don't let the title or the subject matter deter you from buying our book. We
guarantee you will find the book interesting, surprising and enlightening.
Film posters from Germany in this era were quite well designed and despite
the political influences of the day they stand out as some of the greatest
poster art ever produced. We provided translations of original articles
specifically addressing poster design, display and censorship too. The quality
of the book is more like an art exhibition catalog.
Sales on Amazon, eBay and elsewhere are going well. Dealer terms are
available. Thanks

[MOPO] F/A: 1920s and early 1930s Photoplayer Magazine Portrait Supplements

2007-08-20 Thread Phil Edwards Cinema Arts
Good Day MoPo!

For those interested in the golden days of Hollywood when movies made the
cross-over from silents to sound, we are running a selection of Portrait
Supplement originals that were issued with PHOTOPLAYER MAGAZINE. While
occasionally issues of these 1920s/30s publication show up, they are usually
bereft of the loose-leaf premium give-aways that came with the magazines. We
were lucky enough to find a collection of just the supplement portraits.
Movie-mad fans of the day would use these as pin-ups or frame them. If you love
golden age cinema, these are a must-see on our current eBay auctions.

[MOPO] Why we deal in Movie Posters as a Business

2007-08-14 Thread Phil Edwards Cinema Arts
Hi MOPOERs,

Well, it's simple really. We love movies - right across the spectrum - from
Pixar to Fritz Lang; from Dietrich to the Farrelly Brothers, from the Coen
Brothers to Warner Bros, from Japanese animee to Donald Duck, from Keanu Reeves
to Christopher Reeve the list is endless.

We love movies, both together and separately long before we collided several
years ago, and we love the material that was created to promote it, to sell it,
to market it - from the sublime to the ridiculous, from arthouse to out-house,
from silents to HI-DEF-BLOW-YOUR-EARS-OUT-YOUR-HEAD-EYES-OUT-OF-THEIR SOCKETS
special effects epics to the plot-turning whispered asides in THE GOOD SHEPHERD.

We have started uploading our better material directly to our website
www.cinemarts.com.

If you really love movies and movie posters, drop Mila a line at [EMAIL

[MOPO] FA: THE TOUGHEST MAN IN ARIZONA

2007-08-09 Thread Phil Edwards Cinema Arts
Morning MoPo!

We've just uploaded some new items to eBay, and will continue to do so over the
weekend, and this is a heads-up for a great three Australian sheet that just
came in, THE TOUGHEST MAN IN ARIZONA. If you are wondering who that might be,
then take a look at this 1952 classic from Republic. Also several other 50s
westerns daybill posters, French and Italian posters, lobby sets and other
interesting stuff running and coming up.

We've given up on the idea that there's a good time to finish auctions on eBay
now, as well over half of overall eBay sales are outside of the US time zones,
so one person's good time is another's pillow time. So if you see an item you
are looking for, place a bid or set a snipe.

Our ID is cinemarts if the link fails you, and we will always combine shipping
from our website and eBay to minimise shipping costs without compromising solid
packaging. Check our eBay store as well while you are there, as many items now
go straight to the store or website and bypass the auctions route altogether.

Thanks for looking and have a fine weekend wherever you might be.

Being a Power Seller has nothing to do with expertise in any area of selling on
eBay. It has to do with how much one generates in sales.

And any excuse to take a look at Uma's chest for a skin condition of some kind

[MOPO] BUTTERFIERLD 8 - THE MYSTERY OF TWO DAYBILLS... is no mystery at all.

2007-07-22 Thread Phil Edwards Cinema Arts
Bruce Hershenson is running two daybills for BUTTERFIELD 8 at the moment.

They are easy to differentiate in printing, as clearly one is short a plate
(see lack of detail in Liz's negligee as one example).

The version with SUITABLE ONLY FOR ADULTS at the bottom of the poster was
printed for use in Australia. That's the Australian censor rating.

The one without that censor rating was printed in Australia for use in New
Zealand, as the NZ censor stamp clearly indicates. NZ had a different rating
system to Australia, with different terminology and different standards.

Ad sales material for NZ was supplied out of Australian distributors - even for
films banned in Australia but passed for NZ, such as some of the early Hammer
horrors. This was particularly true of daybills - a format commonly used in
both Australia and New Zealand.

For one sheets, either regular US domestics or US internationals were used, of
if it were a British film then UK internationals were frequently used. In other
cases, Australian one sheets were used, and were printed without the Australian
rating, or with the Australian rating over-stamped or over-sniped.

This is about the 29th time I have explained this on numerous forums and
privately to dealers over the years. It will probably be the last. Why does
everyone have such a short memory about this stuff, especially people who
handle this sort of material all the time in volume and over many years -
either the consignors or the sellers?
Regards,
Phil E.

Re: [MOPO] QUESTION: Orig RARE STYLE E.T. Poster, possibly never seen before! PLEASE READ!

2007-07-18 Thread Phil Edwards Cinema Arts
This sounds like a proof copy of an advertisement on card stock that was
(machine) folded and inserted into subscription copies of weekly Variety at the
time. That's where I got mine from.

It's a very nice item because it features the original title, as well as the
different art designs.

Check somewhere on it for in very small and fine print it MAY say something
like "Printed as an advertising supplement to Variety"or similar.

I suspect these were also sent out as advance promos to major theatre chain
managers and perhaps major press people and of course these would be done
without the Variety line.

If it doesn't have the "printed for etc" it's probably a printer's proof copy
(and hence the heavier stock, although the Variety insert was also on very nice
light weight card stock) or one for general promo use.

before! PLEASE READ!

  Hi, Everyone,

About 12 years ago, I purchased a number of posters from someone whose work
involved the printing of posters for Universal. Among the items I bought were
an uncut proof US one sheet from E.T, (spaceship landing style), a couple
proofs on Empire Strikes Back Advance US one sheets and a few other items.
One of the pieces is really intriguing and I was wondering if anyone out
there has seen or even heard of the existence of this poster. The guy I bought
the posters from told me that in terms of this particular piece, he was told by
whoever was in charge to destroy all copies that had been printed. He
destroyed all but 2 that he put awayyears later, I would acquire them from
his as part of our deal.
They are on heavier stock paper than a one sheet---typical insert stock
paper from that era. They are proofs---before trimming they measure 27 inches
wide by 18 inches high---kind of like a small banner. They have graphics on
both sides (nothing like the double sided one sheets of today)---On one side is
printed:
"Steven Spielberg's The Extraterrestrial...in his first adventure on Earth"
(the guy told me the original title was planned to be "The Extraterrestrial",
not "E.T. The Extraterrestrial"). In the corner of this side of the poster
it's printed "c 1982 Universal City Studios, Inc. Printed in U.S.A.". On
the other side of the poster are three great, colorful scenes of the spaceship
landing. The first, with rays of light coming down from the cloudy sky.
Caption underneath reads: "He is afraid. He is totally alone."---in second
scene we actually see the spaceship coming closer to the ground with caption:
"He is 8 million light years from home."---In the third scene the spaceship has
landed and a figure (completely dwarfed by the size of the spaceship) is
standing. looking up at it---it looks a somewhat like an alien figure, but it
could be a boy---I'm not sure. Caption underneath reads: "A timeless story
from the most original director of our time". To the far left of this side of
the poster, it reads: "His films.JAWS.have never failed to amaze
us.CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND.entertain us.RAIDERS OF THE
LOST ARKthrill us. Now Universal Pictures proudly presents Steven
Spielberg's newest film."
I've been collecting & dealing in movie posters for at least 25 years and
in all that time have never come across a poster of this size, US or foreign.
It was obviously designed and printed by Universal---the person I bought it
from was definitely a printer who printed for Universal...and I remember when I
talked to him all those years ago, I completely believed his account about the
changing of the film's title and the fact that he was directed to destroy all
of these posters titled simply "The Extraterrestrial".
I'd really appreciate it if any MoPoer's out there have any insight into
these seemingly rare proofs from E.T The Extraterrestrial before it became E.T.
The Extraterrestrial, I'd really appreciate any insight you might have.
  Thanks very much to all,
  Rick

[MOPO] FA: cinemarts weekly auctions

2007-07-11 Thread Phil Edwards Cinema Arts
Hi All,
Just a reminder that we have several interesting items in our eBay auctions all
this week, from the great international one sheet for TURTLE DIARY with art by
Andy Warhol, to many daybills from the 50s, 60s and through to the 80s.

Other featured titles include THE GOOD THE BAD AND THE UGLY, a great Australian
one sheet with Jack Davis art for A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE
FORUM and many other posters from art house and indie films, to major releases.

If the link doesn't work, then our ID is cinemarts
http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQfrppZ200QQfsooZ1QQfsopZ1QQrdZ0QQsascsZ1QQsassZcinemartsQQsbrsrtZd

As we are selling to the world market, we gave up on the idea of a "good time
to finish an auction". It's someone's "good time" somewhere in the world. So if
you see something you want to bid on, then either bid early or set a snipe. We
don't mind either way.

Thanks for your time,

Maybe had it been not so heavily recut to make it an "action movie" then
perhaps

Ebert's review might have been true.

When I read an Roger Ebert review and he said:

'"Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome,'' not only the best of the three Mad Max
movies, but one of the best films of 1985'

I knew that I could never trust another word that came out of his mouth.

On this list, I never made it past "Shallow Hal". I should have stopped
when I realized that according to Bruce, there have only been 5 classic
films made in the new millennium. Sounds like he needs to get out more.

If you are looking for another interesting list -- check out the imdb top

On a related note, did you ever notice that Poster collectors tend to like
movies better if they have good posters?

-- Original message --
From: Bruce Hershenson <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
As many of you know, I have seen more movies than just about anyone you
will
ever meet! Here are a list of movies I truly consider "classic". I have
arranged
them by date (from most recent backwards) as I know many people have a
prejudice
against black and white movies in general and extreme prejudice against
silent
and subtitled movies, so this puts many of those lower on the list. The
next
time you are at the video store or on Netflix trying to decide what to
rent, I
hope you will consider one of these VERY worthy older choices, rather
than just

scanning the pretty mediocre "new releases".

Note that few current day movies (those of the past few years) are on my
list.
Partly this is because I think few quality ones were made in those years,
and
partly because it takes time to know if a film is really "classic". I
will say
that I think today's strong emphasis on special effects (and lack of
emphasis on

intelligent scripts) is a major factor in my lowered opinion of how many
classics are being made (and of course it may also somewhat reflect that
I am

simply getting older, and miss the "good old days"!).

What makes for a "classic" movie? To me, it is that the movie is a
classic OF
ITS KIND, far superior to similar movies of that type, or something that
is "in
a class by itself" (and is an excellent movie, to boot)! I would never
argue
that the below movies are the "best" movies ever made, so please don't
take this

list that way!

I know many of you will recognize lots of the "older titles" as being
"classics", but realize that there are lots of the titles you won't
recognize
that are also wonderful movies, but sadly have been largely forgotten,
except by
major film buffs, and they are just as good as many of the best
remembered older
titles! I welcome any suggestions of movies that deserve to be on this
list, but

are not!

Here is the list:
2004 SIDEWAYS
2002 MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING
2001 SHALLOW HAL
2001 SPIRITED AWAY
2000 O BROTHER WHERE ART THOU
1998 THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY
1996 MARS ATTACKS
1996 SLING BLADE
1995 BABE ('95)
1995 ROB ROY ('95)
1995 TOY STORY
1994 EAT DRINK MAN WOMAN

EZ: Large list deleted

1921 ORPHANS OF THE STORM
1921 SHEIK
1916 CIVILIZATION
1915 BIRTH OF A NATION
1914 PERILS OF PAULINE ('14)

Note: If a movie has a year after the title, it is because there was one
or more
other versions of that movie in other years, and this let's you know
that, and

to be sure to get the correct version (for example, you don't want to
accidentally rent the awful "new" version of Planet of the Apes thinking
you are

getting the classic "original" version!)

Re: [MOPO] FA/BINs - Latest vintage daybills and others from cinemarts

2007-07-01 Thread Phil Edwards Cinema Arts
AOL EmailHi All
 MOPOers,

We are steadily working our way through a box of 650 daybills at the rate of
about 25 or so a day.
Condition varies as do prices. There are some interesting titles, and in some
cases they are actually titles that do not show up that often, and are going to
be for strictly specialist interest, say for B westerns collectors, WW2 movie
action collectors, British comedy collectors, film noir collectors, or even
those with even more eclectic tastes in movie posters than my wife Mila and I
have.

The one thing they all have in common is that they are originals and are
available for sale to anyone who wants to bid on them.

Here's the current ones running. If the link doesn't work, then our ID is
cinemarts

http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQfrppZ200QQfsooZ2QQfsopZ2QQrdZ0QQsascsZ1QQsassZcinemarts

We have given up trying to deal with all the various time differences around
the world when starting our auctions, so that auctions end at a "convenient
time" (no such thing in international selling, really) so if you see something
you like, then place a bid or set a snipe when you first see it, so you don't
miss out. The number of emails at ends of auctions that start "I was going to
bid, but." are becoming increasingly curious!

That's all folks!

Subject: [MOPO] my answer to Bruce...STAR WARS STYLE C SPANISH 1SH PRINTER'S
PROOF.

Hi Bruce,

Thanks for letting me know about the Star Wars Spanish Style C
printer’s proof, that it is not the only one. I have amended the listing.

Also, thank you….thank you…..THANK YOU!! for your free database of
actual movie poster sales results. I do use it quite a bit. In fact, before I
did the listing I checked your database to see if there were any recorded sales
of Spanish Style C printers proofs and did not see any. All that is in there
are a few entries that you sold some style C’s back in 2001 for $150.00 to
about $500.00. Your database is incomplete in this area and does NOT say they
were Spanish and it does NOT say they were printer’s proofs. Didn’t you just
sell one of the regular U.S. style C proof’s with pg ratings box at one of your
auctions recently for about $2000.00?

This one that I have is actually not one of the ones you sold
previously. This, along with several other proofs I have acquired recently have
never before been for sale.

As for starwarsmovieposter.com’s claim that there were only 200 Spanish
style c’s printed, I have no reason to doubt that. Paul Wilson (who runs the
site, and whom I spoke with before I put up the listing) knows more about Star
Wars posters than practically anybody. He was even at Star Wars Celebration in
L.A. last month at the request of Lucasfilm and gave a presentation about
original Star Wars movie posters.

I handle more original Star Wars posters than most people (not all! ;))
and I have never seen one until now. They obviously don't pop up too often.
Even the Star Wars poster book published in 2005 by Lucasfilm says it is
extremely rare with 9 out of 10 stars for scarcity and value appreciation.

As for the “years can go by without one of these coming up for sale”

That is NOT what I say.

Please check EVERY ONE of my auctions currently listed. I have not used
those words for quite some time, (at least a year). I used to, but not anymore.
What I actually say is “A LONG TIME can go by without one of these coming up
for sale”. I don't say “YEARS”.

I don't see how this is misleading at all. There is no universal
definition for “a LONG time” and I am not even saying a long time HAS gone by.
I'm just saying it is quite possible that a long time CAN go by.

Some people like to make a bigger deal out of this than it actually is.
That’s fine, but I have no plans to change it. There are plenty of people who
don't have a problem with it and think it is quite ridiculous the amount of
attention it gets. And, honestly, do you really think anyone is swayed by this
statement alone to actually make a purchase or to bid higher than they normally
would?

If you think this is worthy of a survey however, then by all means have
at it.

Bruce, you are the king, I have nothing but the greatest respect for
you. We don't have to see eye to eye on everything though do we?

For example: Awhile ago I openly banned Tom Loce from bidding on or
buying any of my items. You know as well as I do that he constantly rips off
newbies with minty white fake lobby card sets and inserts.

Why do you let Tom Loce openly

Re: [MOPO] a General Question

2007-06-25 Thread Phil Edwards Cinema Arts
Working directly in film distribution (marketing and publicity) cinema
exhibition (programming a major circuit and selected arthouses) for a
combined 20 plus years, along with acting as consultant on publicity and
marketing of various films from arthouse indies to major release promotions,
and another 15 years plus years working as a film journalist very closely
with both marketing and publicity people, and being on first name terms with
many major distributor senior executives and marketing people over many
years has added a wealth of background to what I bring to my knowledge of
film posters, their production, distribution and real availability.

I'm still working in the film industry at a much earlier stage of production
than any of the above now, along with running Cinema Arts with my wife.

Actively seeking out old hands here in Australia who were involved in
marketing throughout the 50s and 60s, and finding a couple of the older guys
(now sadly deceased) who were hand litho artists and printers in the 40s and
50s, and being able to pick their brains on such matters as hand litho
history, print run numbers, how distributors worked with poster printers,
how film prints were booked and worked, how posters were circulated and
re-circulated, etc, etc has also added to my storehouse of knowledge.

It has also added an aspect to the radar when one works in the film
business - from pre-production to all the way to knowing how to strike a
carbon arc - and that's an increasing ability to detect the BS factor of
many people who deal in movie posters and what they say they know about them
in their efforts to sell them.

It is never less than entertaining.

By the way, anyone genuinely interested in film posters, their art, history
and creation as part of the promotion of films and not just in it for the
trophy hunting, should get a hold of Sim Branaghan's BRITISH FILM POSTERS.
It is probably the single most important book on film posters yet published.

Also, I bet you Thalberg knew bubkes about Minty Whites.

[MOPO] FA/FS : Vintage Australian Daybills from Cinemarts

2007-06-19 Thread Phil Edwards Cinema Arts
Hello MoPoers.

We are adding around 25 daybills a day to our eBay auctions. Nothing much too
recent, with quite a lot from the 40s 50s and 60s. Definitely worth a look
every couple of days to see what has been added. There is about 600 different
titles that will appear on eBay before we are done with that particular boxful.

Here's the link to the auctions. If that doesn't work, then our eBay ID is
cinemarts.

http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQfrppZ200QQfsooZ1QQfsopZ1QQrdZ0QQsascsZ1QQsassZcinemartsQQsbrsrtZd

There is also more material in our eBay store, so worth checking that out as we
will always combine shipping wherever possible

We have also added some beautiful posters (many linen backed) to our website
this week, including some exceedingly hard to find daybills from the past
(including JAILHOUSE ROCK, HER JUNGLE LOVE, etc) Polish posters from the 1970s
and other delights for movie poster collectors.

You will find 3 pages of FEATURED MOVIE POSTERS here:
http://www.cinemarts.com/

And then you can take the tour around the rest of Cinema Arts using the search
boxes and poster format search facility.

Thanks for reading, and taking a look,
Phil & Mila Edwards

Hey Jeff,
While things do get a bit thick around here at times with what seems like
petty kvetching, remember one thing and remember it well; we are here
because we are dorks. We are poster dweebs, and we are proud of it. Dorks
and dweebs argue over minutiae endlessly. To do otherwise would make us
normal people. Drink the Kool-Aid, baby, or take the next bus outta
Jonestown..
On a more serious note...the obviously fake inserts have caused real
problems in the hobby. Selling these things as original is, first of all,
fraudulent and dishonest, no matter how much the perpetrators of this
little scam muddy the waters with obfuscation and fake professors. (Don't
ask, Jeff! You don't want to know about Professor Powers!) Secondly, the
fear, uncertainty and doubt generated by this highly dubious material
devalues and casts doubt as to the authenticity of inserts that are The
Real Deal. I've been collecting for 44 years now, and I have pretty good
judgement for a vintage poster when I hold it in my hand, look at it with
my eyes, and, yes, smell it with my big nose. I really love this hobby,
and while I am not terminally angst-ridden about about this whole minty
white vs. printed right thing, I really, really bothers me to see my
beloved hobby's skirts sullied with this crapola.
By the way, if you think THIS is bitchy behavior, wait until we start
discussing alternate ways to remove tape stains! You're gonna see some fur
fly then, buddy!
Welcome to the group, and pick up your pocket protector from Scott at the
end of the week.

Re: [MOPO] Fake inserts, LAMP's reply to my question

2007-06-11 Thread Phil Edwards Cinema Arts
Fake inserts, LAMP's reply to my questionI am absolutely sure they are fake and
were not produced for use in conjunction with exhibition of the films they
represent - which is what real movie posters are actually produced for.

When these first surfaced in Australia, the Sydney movie poster store that was
selling them tried to sell them to me as the real deal. Obviously, after so
many years (many more than this joker had) handling movie paper it was obvious
that the paper for these inserts was wrong, the printing lacked a certain
finish and the whole thing didn't even pass a good sniffing test (don't all
laugh it's still the best way to check a STAR WARS one sheet original!) I
didn't need to start comparing how some of them had different art crops to
absolutely bona fide originals.

He finally owned up they were what they were - repros, and that there was an
inexhaustible supply of them.

This was the same dealer who confidently bought STAR WARS hairy belt repros and
sold them for originals on the basis that people wouldn't know the difference.
$5 each to buy, and sold for anything from $200 - $300 each, depending on how
big the sucker who walked through the door was.

I can't believe we (mostly some of the other dinosaurs who graze here) are even
having this discussion yet again about minty white inserts and trying to
attribute credibility to them in any way, shape or form.

Hi Helmut,
I apologize for the delay in response to you. Your email was just forwarded
to me this morning. I do not read or go on any of the forums anymore for
several reasons. 1. Our workload has reached such a level that Sue and I are
basically trying to do the work of a full staff. We have also taken on several
court cases that might have an effect on the hobby which has us doing a massive
amount of research. 2. Since Hurricane Katrina, I just don't have the patience
for a lot of debates anymore. Now, lack of common sense sends me into a frenzy.
3. A lot of the debates on the forums just seem to be for the purpose of
argument or mudslinging and I don't have the time or patience to get involved.
( I guess this is a definate sign of getting old)

Now we tell people to just email me direct (my email address is everywhere
on LAMP)... and I am more than happy to respond to any and all personal
discussions when any type of learning (on either side) is the objective.

For your question about the 'minty whites'

I am at a disadvantage on this subject because I have never personally
handled or compared them. BUT I have asked several dealers that I have great
respect for what they thought. I received an indepth answer from Bruce who
stated that he could tell the difference between them in the dark.. that the
feel of the paper was vastly different and the 'minty whites' had the more
slick reproduction feel.

BUT, our stance on the subject is.. that is doesn't matter what we think
about them It's what the HOBBY thinks about them. The poster collecting
hobby is based on pure economics. Supply and Demand. If the demand for them is
there, then the price on them will rise no matter what anybody says... BUT if
the hobby has determined that they are 'fakes' (whether they are or not) THEN
the hobby will avoid them, they will not increase and re-selling will become
difficult.

Consequently the dealers or collectors in jeopardy of purchasing them with
the intent of reselling them are the ones that are not informed about them OR
the ones without enough experience to know the difference. - As an example, a
number of years ago, we were called to be an expert witness for a court case
involving Nightmare Before Christmas US one sheets. The value was rising
rapidly and they were fetching $100 each or more at the time. An aggressive
collector found Nightmare Before Christmas one sheets in the Suncoast retail
chain for $15 marked that they were 'original movie posters', so he made his
rounds, I believe over a couple of states buying up the posters. They were
identical from the front because they came from the original plates but they
didn't have the numbers or Disney tag on the back for the posters that were
issued to the theaters. The retail chain gave his money back and changed the
stickers on their posters. The point is... the HOBBY would accept these for the
market value and it took experience and education to tell the difference.

We believe the way to solve problems like this is through education
Mudslinging and rock throwing only creates MORE mudslinging and rock throwing
and then basically no one wins

Hey, I just asked you to question the lies and you go right out and...

Cause, that's another whopper from the MPAA. I go to a lot of
preview/press-screenings here in Canada and the one thing most of them have in
common: body searches, metal-detectors and night-vision goggles! Oh yeah, the
night vision goggle thing started about 2 or 3 years ago up here. So, either
Variety's WAY behind in their reporting - or the MPAA's full of shit and trying
to push some sort of new anti-consumer legislation through Congress...
Remember, these are the people who like to spout off statistics like such and
such percent of piracy comes from such and such a place? Last I heard, if you
added up all the percentages from all the countries on Earth, it comes out
somewhere around 300% of all the world's piracy... They're also the people who
prevent you from seeing any movie with thrusting in it. Cause, there's nothing
on the entire planet more damaging to the human psyche than seeing two people
having realistic-looking sex. They're openly sexist (on the other hand, at
least they aren't racist anymore). They treat indie films considerably harsher
than big-budget films. Etc...

Hey Tom,
I'm sure it is because they are based in Canada. Most of the
reproduction houses are in Europe, mainly France and Germany. It may be that
the laws are hard to enforce on this issue out of the states. Many of my studio
contacts say it's just too overwhelming. To be honest, while someone is making
money off of their image, it is still their image advertising their movie that
is being put out there. So, in a way it's millions of dollars in free
publicity. Duplicating a video, DVD or CD to resell it is a different matter
since those are primarily being produced for sale to the public to make a
profit. Movie posters are not made for the public for sale or otherwise so the
only money the studio is losing in that venture are the people that help
themselves to originals at the studio, the printer or other vendors that
utilize movie posters. In the end even those posters make it to a wall
somewhere, again advertising that movie.
Moviegoods makes their own line of reproductions and buys repros
from other sources. I supply Moviegoods the frames they sell on their website
and often they ship me the posters to install in the frames. They have a nice
line of reproductions to movies all the way back to the silents and
conveniently printed to 27x40, not some weird size like the ones that come out
of Europe. That allows customers to swap posters in and out of a standard size
movie poster frame. They are made on photographic paper and in no way would you
confuse it for an original and they don't claim otherwise. I don't know what
type of licensing agreement they have, if any. I'm sure most of these companies
reproducing posters don't have licensing agreements. Portal does and I'm sure
it irks them that they have to pay those fees when all these other companies
are out there reproducing like crazy for no fees. Just guessing.

With between 1 and 6 days to run between them, we have wide range of material
on eBay auctions right now - from LOST HIGHWAY to the INVISIBLE MAN, and from
the original 1931 CISCO KID to Laughton's magnificent 1939 HUNCHBACK, and a
couple of extremely rare examples of Australian one sheets at their absolute
best - George Sanders as THE SAINT IN LONDON and the Australian classic SONS OF

image of Sanders, the latter a simply gorgeous and rare one sheet for one of
the most famous of Australian films from our cinema's most important director,
Charles Chauvel.

Also featured are two of Bela Lugosi's Monogram period films, the beautiful and
exotic stone litho three sheet for MYSTERIOUS MR WONG from 1934, and the later
and somewhat less evocatively titled, BOWERY AT MIDNIGHT.

Also on offer the British Quad original for the 1940 DR CYCLOPS, the first

It's a poster printed for the library circuit. I had about a dozen of these
at one time, all different titles, but including the CK. From the 1950s, they
came from a theater owner who sold me a few thousand posters, and he told me
what these were. Back in the 50s, they would provide films for the schools and
libraries to show to the kids during summer. These posters were provided to
help publicize the library showings.

  hope this helps.

Re: [MOPO] 2001

2007-03-15 Thread Phil Edwards Cinema Arts
2001I'm pretty sure that 2001 was the last film that SK let anyone have final
say over any and all materials issued, other than him or totally trusted
assistants. The daft lobby cards must have pissed of Stan the man enormously
when so much of the other materials were so superb such as the jumbo lobby set,
for example, the 3D counter cards and 3D one sheets, and the core artworks by
Bob McCall.

Indeed Kubrick later intensely disliked any press stills or lobby cards that
were not direct frame enlargements or completely overseen/approved by himself.

As a great stills photographer himself and perfectionist in all areas of his
craft and art, it's easy to understand this.

Oddly enough, some of the best BTS stills taken on the STRANGELOVE shoot were
done by the great Weegee.

There was an entire run of FMJ "US one sheets" that were actually printed in
the UK so SK could oversee the printing.

Looking at this 2001 lobby card, it made me wonder (as it does every time I
look at this lobby card)...what made the photo colorist think that Keir Dullea
wore a green spacesuit with a pink control panel? Don't you think he/she would
check with the art director or someone at the studio? I don't remember what the
exact colors were, but I'm fairly certain they didn't include pink.

In a 1980 interview, Julian Senior, Kubrick's publicity director, said
"Stanley refuses to have a stills photographer standing beside him taking
photographs of every scene. In his opinion, the photograph which best
represents a shot from the film is one enlarged from the print itself." That's
fine, but if you're going to be that finicky, shouldn't you make sure the
photos don't have pink control panels?

[MOPO] FA: cinemarts weekly auctions feature Down Under theme

2007-03-10 Thread Phil Edwards Cinema Arts

Hi everyone,
So a result - one of many - of the Mother of All Sort Outs of Folded Posters
starts to show up this week on our weekly auctions which due to the sheer
volume of folded one sheets, photosheets, daybills and odd-sized folded
posters will spread over the next 10 days or so is a recurrent theme - which
is original posters for Australian and New Zealand films.

There is or will be Australian and NZ posters for Australian and NZ films,
US and international posters for Australian and NZ films and any combination
I may have overlooked. Most of this material we have never offered before.
We are quite proud of the amount of material we have accumulated for
Australian films overall, and they reach from before the New Wave of the
late 1970s to recent and current titles.

Mixed in with this ongoing project of the next two-three weeks will be some
interesting exploitation one sheets for films that some of you may never
have heard of!

Take a look, and bookmark us with a check in every few days as we are
working to an as time permits schedule right now.

Thanks for taking a look and even if you don't bid, then enjoy the posters.
Oh, and we also have some nice jazz CDs running as well!

Re: [MOPO] Monroe's Last Film

2007-03-08 Thread Phil Edwards Cinema Arts
Well, a belated two cents on various aspects

Cent 1: I doubt Fox would have issued a set of cards until a rough cut was done
- as even then having scenes on cards that were not in the finished film would
be problematic. It's rare enough to find publicity stills (produced in greater
abundance than lobby sets) of deleted scenes or shots that didn't make the
final cut. Besides, Fox were having difficulties with MM from early on in the
shoot, no?

Cent 2: While I think these are exactly like what they smell like, running
previously printed sheets through for a one-colour overprint addition to white
borders was and is possible.

Cent 3: (okay, overspending) See Cent 2.

Photoshop and 4 colour midnight grants in backwater towns = the bootleggers
friends.

Do any of you have the DVD The Final Days? They mention 500 minutes of
footage, MM being fired from the film, Dino deciding he wasn't going to do the
film if they replaced MM with another actress, Fox changing their mind and
would resume filming, MM suicide or was it? Anyhow, with the footage they had,
a 37 minute short version of the film is shown on the DVD.

However, I don't think Fox would have thrown the switch on the lobby

Re: [MOPO] Two important announcements from eMoviePoster.com

2007-02-17 Thread Phil Edwards Cinema Arts
Yes, there are now pages of complaints on the eBay boards about the
Turbolister glitch, that has caused lots of people problems outside of the
shipping destinations option including having HTML templates stripped,
images lost etc, etc.

There are literally hundreds if not thousands of sellers that are
experiencing the same problem out there and doubtless it's costing them
sales.

The odd thing is that so far I haven't seen a single word from eBay on the
subject - and it's a problem that's at least a week old.

What have they told you Bruce about the problem? I'm sure I'm not the only
MOPO member who is a seller as well as a buyer who'd like to hear the
excuses they have provided.

Best,
Phil

Subject: [MOPO] Two important announcements from eMoviePoster.com

I want to make all MoPo members aware of two important announcements
concerning eMoviePoster.com:

1) There was a weird eBay "glitch" this week! We use their "Turbo Lister"
tool to list our items, and it caused the shipping column on all of this
week's items to read "United States only"! Of course, this is incorrect,
as WE GLADLY SHIP ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD, just as we have always done.
eBay had no "fix" for this, EXCEPT for manually changing each auction
one-by-one. But their system does not let us change auctions that have
bids, so we were only able to correct approximately 700 of the 1,096
items. But we want you to be aware that we will send ALL of the 1,096
items anywhere in the world, regardless of what the shipping column reads
(and this will always be true for our auctions).

2) We now have an important new "backup" for our
Current Auction
Image Gallery! A high percentage of our bidders have discovered that it
is FAR easier to look at our items through our
Current Auction
Image Gallery.
But because so many of our bidders now use our gallery, on rare
occasions it has overwhelmed our server, and some of our bidders have not
been able to access it, especially right when the auctions are closing.
Worse yet, this outage in our server means that you can't see the images
on our eBay auctions, because our large and super-sized images are housed
on the same server as our
Current Auction
Image Gallery.
THEREFORE, WE HAVE CREATED A
BACKUP "MIRROR"
VERSION OF OUR CURRENT AUCTION IMAGE GALLERY. It is located at
http://www.emovieposter.info/gallery/currentauctions.php
. This is housed on a completely different server, and will always be
available. The only time you want to use it, however, is whenever you
CAN'T access our regular
Current Auction
Image Gallery, OR when you can't view the larger images on our auctions.
PLEASE ADD
http://www.emovieposter.info/gallery/currentauctions.php
TO YOUR FAVORITES/BOOKMARKS. You will likely either never need it, or
only use it once, but if you are a regular bidder in our auctions, it will
be invaluable to you the day you DO need it, for you will be able to see
all of our large images, and use this "mirr!
or" version of our Current Auction Image Gallery, even though the main
version is unavailable.

Thanks to those of our 26,600+ customers who are also MoPo members!

Bruce

[MOPO] FA: cinemarts weekly eBay auctions and Stills Gallery Update

2007-02-15 Thread Phil Edwards Cinema Arts
Hi Everyone,

Just a note to let you know we have 380 plus items on eBay auctions this week,
ranging from lobby sets, daybills, arthouse and indie one sheets, non-English
language posters, Hong Kong action lobby cards, and a wonderful selection of
1920s PHOTOPLAYER PORTRAIT GALLERY supplements. These were original included as
loose leaf insert to the British PHOTOPLAYER magazine and are rarely still in
the magazines when they show up (rare in itself these days!). Fortunately we
uncovered a collection of just the Portrait Supplements and many great stars of
the mid-to-late 1920s and early 30s are included. Definitely a treat for lovers
silent cinema and early talkies to browse through.

As always, eBay purchases can be combined with shipping along with our
www.cinemarts.com inventory and our new stills gallery at
http://www.cinemart.nelsonbay.com/

Our eBay user ID is cinemarts if this link doesn't work, and remember you can
use our carefully cross-referenced eBay Store search engine to find specific
items of specialised interest in both the store and on auction.

http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQfrppZ200QQfrtsZ0QQfsooZ2QQfsopZ2QQrdZ0QQsascsZ1QQsassZcinemarts

As other sellers have noted this week, there is a glitch in Turbolister that
shows that sellers listing on eBay only ship to US, and while we've tried to
accommodate this problem with a special notation, rest assured that we do
indeed SHIP WORLDWIDE!

Thanks for taking a look,
Regards,
Phil & Mila

[MOPO] FA: CINEMARTS WEEKLY EBAY AUCTIONS

2007-01-11 Thread Phil Edwards Cinema Arts
Hi Everyone,
Just a note to let you know we have uploaded our weekly auctions, with over 300
items from Polish posters through original stills, and a bunch of sexploitation
daybills, an artform unto themselves, really. It's a kind of FROM ARTHOUSE TO
OUTHOUSE collection this week.

As usual you can combine shipping from the auctions and our eBay store.
Speaking of which, we have also just revamped the eBay store with a slew of new
categories so searching and browsing using the store's own engine is now a lot
more easier.

We will also combine eBay auctions and BINs with items from our website to make
the shipping as economical as possible, but without compromising our solid
packaging.

Thanks for taking a look. Here's the link to auctions. From there, just click
on the eBay store icon for further browsing using the store search engine
and/or store categories. Our ID is cinemarts if this link fails you!

Re: [MOPO] YOU HAVE TO GET ONE BRITISH FILM POSTER HISTORY

2006-12-15 Thread Phil Edwards Cinema Arts
Hi all,
there is a thread on NSFGE that covers some interesting background on this book.
I'm sure it's wonderful, but I wouldn't disregard Tony Nourmand's numerous
books, nor indeed Bruce Hershenson's numerous books of film poster images.

If you can't afford or find all the posters one wants, then having the images
in books is the next best thing, isn't it?

I'm old enough to remember when John Kobal's massive spiral bound poster book
came out and delighted poster collectors worldwide - despite its somewhat
scrappy presentation and images culled from numerous sources.

A book on quads is long, long overdue and this one does indeed look and sound
terrific.

  Ladies and Gentlemen of MOPOland.

I have just got my copy of British Film Posters An Illustrated History by
Sim Brannigan.

It is one of the best records and historys of film posters. An
exhaustivley researched tome that is neede on any collector remotely interested
in British posters.

Seriously you will be doing yourself an injustice if you do not get this
book. Forget all those ridiculous Posters of each decade, this is the book.

Re: [MOPO] Subtitles

2006-12-14 Thread Phil Edwards Cinema Arts
The first subtitled film I ever saw was SEVEN SAMURAI, the 205 minute
version (because the print was an original from Japan brought in by the then
distributors here because they believed in such stuff), in 35mm at a
screening by the film society at Sydney University one Saturday afternoon.
It was about 1964... I was certainly no older than a young 15 at any rate.

I'd read about this "great movie" in several movie history books I had been
devouring since I was about 10 or 11. I thought I'd better get myself along
to see one of these "foreign films" I'd been reading about. I thought it was
going to be a chore. You know - you have to see this because it's "art" and
famous and film history. I figured I'd be bored stiff. And you know, it was
sub-titled... one of those fillums with writing down the bottom of the
screen. I only found out when I got there that it was well over 3 hours...
sheesh.

So I emerged 205 minutes later totally gob-smacked. After 10 minutes I
hadn't even realised that I was watching and reading simultaneously. If
there's anyway I can see a film in its original language with subtitles,
then that's what I'll go for - whatever it is.

In non-English films in general, the quality of the subtitles is sometimes
an issue for me. It is often apparent that what is being said in the film
and what the subtitles say are not the same thing. Much can be lost.

I am fully aware of the limitations of subtitles, but I do think that
sometimes the standard could be raised. It is an art in itself really.

The characteristic about both films: Letters from Iwo Jima and Apocalypto
is that they are much like silent films and you can follow them easily.
There isn't heavy dialogue and yet it has made both films quite
compelling.

[MOPO] FA and FS: One sheets, daybills, lobby cards and the rest on eBay

2006-12-06 Thread Phil Edwards Cinema Arts
Hello Everybody,

We now have over 300 BUY IT NOW items (not long-running store items, but
genuine BINs for a week) on our eBay listings.

Lots of one sheets, daybills and assorted other items, all movie-related. Just
about something for everyone.

http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQfasiZ1QQfrppZ200QQfsooZ2QQfsopZ2QQrdZ0QQsascsZ2QQsassZcinemartsQQsbrbinZt

We also have a handful of auction items (click the AUCTIONS tab on the
cinemarts list page) including WINGS OF DESIRE and DINGO French one panels,
both generally considered the nicest pieces on both these films, and the latter
a great MILES DAVIS piece.

Our eBay user ID is cinemarts if the above link doesn't work.

Thanks for reading and taking a look. We'll always combine shipping of items
from eBay sales and our website at www.cinemarts.com

Best wishes,

[MOPO] FA: Latest eBay auctions fron cinemarts - daybills, quads, French one panels, etc

2006-11-30 Thread Phil Edwards Cinema Arts
Hello Everybody,

Due to the vagaries of eBay (currently in one of those discussions) a complete
list of our current auctions that are featured on both eBay US and eBay UK can
only be viewed through the eBay UK site.

Well, whether listed in US dollars, or pounds sterling, or whatever, they are
all available worldwide. It's our usual eclectic range of US, Australian and
non-English language material, including some classics in the latter area.

Here's a link to the UK listings. Hopefully eBay will sort out the glitch, but
in the meantime, thanks for reading and taking a look at our current offerings,
all of which can be seen through the UK site listings.

Re: [MOPO] PENGUINS Vs 007

2006-11-19 Thread Phil Edwards Cinema Arts
Looking at the relative box office of the dancing penguins and sexy secret
agent, the one thing that comes to mind is the relative running times. HAPPY
FEET clocks in around 90 mins (so what is it - IMDB shows the US having a
shorter run time than rest of world), the Bond almost an hour longer at 144
mins.

Anybody got a breakdown of number of sessions/ screens across the US? Of
course no one is going to know how many flop flicks in THEIR dogs days had
sessions canned so they could loop the prints into other houses for session
overflows.

Hollywood math. A world of its own.

Claude - first time I've heard of legit second chance offers on items still
running from other sellers, and especially on items you are already committed to

They sound like bogus or targeted physh/spoof emails to me. Do they show up
in your My eBay messages as well? If not, then certainly don't hit on anything
in those emails.

If they do, Bruce or any seller would have reason to be mighty ticked

My two cents (and at the current rate of Australian
cents, that's about US1.5 cents) is that these may well have been produced
for wilding at the time of the film's release as an intriguing gimmick ballyhoo

While thumbing through my copy of Robert Osborne's (Turner Classic Movies

Re: [MOPO] Ebay "visits" counters set back to zero on my 3 auctions

2006-10-15 Thread Phil Edwards Cinema Arts
Rod - eBay counters have never been the same since eBay took over from
Andale.
We've noticed totally erratic numbers, including absurdly high numbers of
visits on what are basically mundane items... 400-500 hits on a SHAWSHANK
REDEMPTION one sheet, or ELIZABETH one sheet.

It's a pattern most noticeable on newly listed items.
Listed things last week, and within a few seconds of listing, some items
were showing up to 10 hits each, others were at a minimum of 3. None were
zero.

I don't believe their "watching" numbers, either. Simple programming helps
give eBay the allusion of lots more activity in "looking and watching"than
there really is.

Sometimes the "best" poster find doesn't relate to
dollar value at all. Finding a bargain (i.e. a valuable poster at a cheap price)
has never compared - for me at least - finding something of rarity and interest,

I've seen a linen backed 1920 three sheet fade by 50% in just five days
of soft and indirect English sunlight when some idiot forgot to shut the
curtains during the day while they were out and the sun fell through a
lace curtain on it.

Due to the numerous factors involved in fading - such as inks used, the
printing process involved, the paper quality, the type of light involved

better to be safe than sorry.

While I think Nathalie maybe doing a bit of a belts and braces job

But that rabid fanbase came out in force for the DVD. It sold more

There is also a matter of booking agents that can be thrown into
the mix and can alter everything. I know the closest theater to me
has an agent that works a deal where studios get 65% of the first
two weeks. If a distributor will not go for this then they will
not show the film. The booking agent of course gets paid a fee for
negotiating this but it's well worth it. This theater doesn't show
any movie for more than four weeks (it's a matter of number of
screens) and for weeks three and four the studios receive 30%. I
have been involved with the financial side of this theater and
that's the way it operates. This was true for Kong, DaVinci, Lion
the Witch and Wardrobe, Cars, as well as Descent and John Tucker
Must Die, big films and small films alike.

Will this be different for other theaters and other distributors?

Yes. But at that theater if they won't do that deal they won't
show the movie. A resource to find out more about that end of the
business is here.

http://www.bigscreenbiz.com/cgi-bin/ultimate.cgi

Some distributors actually demand an up front advance on what the

box office is likely to be. But that's generally for event films
and theaters don't mind paying it, they'll get it back in the end
if not through tickets then through popcorn. Of course, with the
declining health of event films some are starting to drag their
feet on this, and for good reason.

This is all thrown out the window when it comes to foreign

distribution. They operate in their own world. Even someone as big
as Paramount doesn't distribute in most countries and they use
foreign distributors that are going to take about 15-25% in
addition to what the theater takes. And this isn't just for a
country like Chad, this is for countries like the UK.

MI3 had a $40 million marketing budget and a $150 million

production budget. A studio is going to walk away with about 40%
of foreign distribution and about 55% of domestic.

So rounding to $104 million from foreign and $73 million domestic.

Sumner Redstone
Gives Tom Cruise
His Walking Papers

Star Alienated Paramount;
His Production Company
Now May Go Independent

By *MERISSA MARR*
August 23, 2006; Page A1

As a nearly untouchable star for most of his 25-year movie career, Tom
Cruise isn't used to Hollywood studios showing him the door. But after
a year of Mr. Cruise's controversial and sometimes odd public
behavior, the studio he has long called home is ushering him off the lot.

[Tom Cruise]

In an unusually public rebuke, *Viacom* Inc. Chairman Sumner Redstone
said that his company's movie studio, Paramount Pictures, plans to end
its 14-year relationship with the 44-year-old Mr. Cruise and his
film-production company. In an interview, Mr. Redstone, who is 83, was
clear about the reason: Mr. Cruise's public antics and incessant
stumping for personal causes, notably Scientology, have become
intolerable and have been a drag on ticket sales for films like
"Mission: Impossible III."

"It's nothing to do with his acting ability, he's a terrific actor,"
said Mr. Redstone. "But we don't think that someone who effectuates
creative suicide and costs the company revenue should be on the lot."

As a consequence, Paramount will not renew the expensive deal that has
made the studio home to Cruise/Wagner Productions, the company Mr.
Cruise owns with partner Paula Wagner. That deal in recent years paid
Mr. Cruise and Ms. Wagner up to $10 million a year to develop films
and operate an office on the Paramount lot. Mr. Cruise's
representatives had indicated in recent weeks that the star might be
willing to discuss a less-lucrative deal to stay at the studio. But
now they are parting ways.

"As much as we like him personally, we thought it was wrong to renew
his deal," Mr. Redstone said. "His recent conduct has not been
acceptable to Paramount."

After being contacted by The Wall Street Journal, Mr. Cruise's
representatives presented a different version of events. They said
that Mr. Cruise's production company had decided to set up an
independent operation financed by two top hedge funds, which they
declined to name. Ms. Wagner said such an arrangement represented a
new business model for top actors prominent enough to take advantage
of the flood of money coming into Hollywood from Wall Street.

"This is a dream of Tom and mine," Ms. Wagner said. She challenged Mr.
Redstone's assertion that Mr. Cruise's behavior had cost the studio
ticket sales, pointing out that the star's movies have made the studio
a huge amount of money.

Mr. Cruise's agent, Rick Nicita of Creative Artists Agency, said Mr.
Cruise was "offended" upon learning of Mr. Redstone's comments. "This
was done in an incredibly graceless way," he said.

The differing accounts of the split between Paramount and Mr. Cruise
are a climax to more than a year of controversies that have badly
dented Mr. Cruise's public image and, for the first time, called into
question his once-unchallenged star power. Those events included Mr.
Cruise's relentless promotion of the Church of Scientology, the
religion founded by science-fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard.

On NBC's Today show last summer, Mr. Cruise launched a sermon about
the evils of antidepressants, taking a swipe at actress Brooke Shields
who wrote about her use of the medicine to help cope with postpartum
depression in her book "Down Came the Rain." Scientology is opposed to
modern psychiatry and its medications.

Open criticism of powerful stars was once rare in Hollywood. But
celebrity clout has declined with the industry itself. The burgeoning
celebrity press has overexposed big stars like Mr. Cruise and put a
harsh spotlight on their every move, as seen in the scandal over Mel
Gibson's drunk-driving incident in Malibu last month.

[Sumner Redstone]

Mr. Redstone's hard line signals the lack of patience studios have
these days with expensive deals that don't deliver. Studios have been
curbing profit-sharing deals and pulling out of costly movies. Even
Jim Carrey, once one of

There is no such thing as a "straight forward formula".

At a very basic level, you go to the movies and you get a generic ticket
stub that does not have the name of the movie on it through computer
ticketing system. These systems are notoriously pesky and can break down
very easily, apparently. Especially during peak times when a lot of
traffic is going through and a lot of people are paying in cash.

How do you know that the money you just handed over for the ticket for
THAT movie is actually going into the box office for THAT movie and not
A. Nother movie?

It is a very interesting business. Indeed it is. Any business where a
film can be the "top grossing" film for the week and still be deemed "a
disaster" is pretty interesting. It's only when one delves deeper into
per-screen averages versus prints in the marketplace that any sort of a
real picture emerges.

but obviously this can't be so. I can't recall seeing any information on how much of the cost of a
ticket gets back to the studio? I know that classic "Hollywood accounting" make it
impossible to tell how much a film eventually makes, but surely there must be some relatively
straight-forward way or formula for getting the money from the box-office back to the studio?

Re: [MOPO] WSJ: Paramount terminates ties with Tom Cruise

2006-08-22 Thread Phil Edwards Cinema Arts

"His recent conduct has not been acceptable to Paramount."

That's a very odd turn of phrase coming from Redstone in what is simply
- it would seem - a business decision.
The question arises, exactly what behaviour would he be talking about? I
doubt very much that TC's Oprah outburst
and misjudged comments on anti-depressant drugs from his Scientology
background would actually mean that much in the big scheme of things.
Movie stars are saying and doing dumb-ass things all the time.

And while MI:3 was less than successful, it will still show on the
profit side at the end of the day for Paramount.

The "recent conduct" referred to may well be something that isn't public
knowledge at all, or may never be, if indeed it is

anything specific at all.

One can only wonder why the Redstone statement needed any kind of
qualifier like this. Business deals get reviewed all the
time at contract time and it would have been sufficient to say that
Paramount were not renewing their contract with Cruise Wagner
Productions. The most common reason that previously successful such
deals have not been renewed at contract time is that one side or the
other wants more than the other is prepared to concede. Making a
specific statement about "recent conduct" which is no more odd than what
many Hollywood stars get up to is very strange indeed.

*Paramount Ends Relationship
With Tom Cruise's Company*

By MERISSA MARR, WALL STREET JOURNAL
August 22, 2006 6:43 p.m.

Viacom
Inc. Chairman Sumner Redstone said his company's Paramount Pictures is
terminating its 14-year relationship with actor Tom Cruise's
production company, citing the actor's controversial and sometimes
erratic behavior of the past year.

Mr. Cruise, the star of Paramount hits like "Mission: Impossible,"
"Top Gun" and "Days of Thunder," has based his moviemaking company,
Cruise/Wagner Productions, on the Paramount lot since 1992.

But in the past year, Mr. Cruise's star has fallen in the wake of a
series of public incidents in which he stumped for his faith in the
Church of Scientology; severely criticized the use of antidepressant
drugs; and engaged in sometimes offbeat behavior, such as jumping up
and down on Oprah Winfrey's couch to proclaim his love for actress
Katie Holmes.

Paramount now believes that Mr. Cruise's behavior hurt the box office
of his most recent film, "Mission: Impossible III." Now, Mr. Redstone
said he wants to sever the studio's connection to its biggest star.

"As much as we like him personally, we thought it was wrong to renew
his deal," Mr. Redstone said in an interview with the Wall Street
Journal. "His recent conduct has not been acceptable to Paramount."

A spokeswoman for Cruise/Wagner Productions declined to comment.

Re: [MOPO] SHOW OF FEET -- Life is short...

2006-08-14 Thread Phil Edwards Cinema Arts

The Hildebrandt artwork was used on the quad, which
was withdrawn once Lucas saw and approved the character driven Chantrell art.
Most were trashed, but some got out into the maketplace and now commands serious
consideration.

The art was also used on the commercially licensed
1977 Factors Etc poster, one of which we sold on eBay in the last couple of
weeks (a search will turn it up).

If I'm not mistaken, isn't that Spanish languge one
sheet also printed in the US, Steve? We have a simlar advance Spanish language
one sheet for the film, also printed in the US.

My understanding is that as well as designed for
use in Spanish language territories as an international until local printings
were done, they were also used in Spanish speaking areas of southern CA, Texas,
and other border areas in the US where Spanish is the predominant
language.

Same thing happened in Melbourne, Australia in 50s
and 60s where both Greek dubbed and subtitled prints and Greek language posters
for major American flms were used to satisfy the very large Greek community in
Melbourne. Interesting to note that for some time (and perhaps still the case)
that Melbourne's Greek population was the largest in the world outside Athens
(Greece).

  Steve,

Actually, the Hildebrant artwork also appeared on the original 1977
British Quad style A... also on some "15th anniversary" 27x41 posters
released in 1992 (but I am confused as to whether or not the 1992 posters were
ever used for theatrical display... one of them even has "A NEW HOPE" logo in
place of the normal "STAR WARS" logo... weird...). But it's true that the
Hildebrandt artwork is much harder to find than the Jung, and I think $93
was a very good price indeed. I like the Hildebrandt artwork better than the
  Jung myself.

It should also be noted that LucasFilm used the Hildebrant artwork in
1977 on a promotional poster they were selling to retailers
for over-the-counter sales (it was sized kind of like an insert, but a
bit wider and not as long). I had a record shop in 1977 and ordered several
boxes of them direct from LucasFilm and was selling them for $3 bucks each.
Oddly, I have never seen one of these odd-size but very nice-looking
posters offered on eBay... I wonder what happened to them all?
I wish I had keep several boxes of 'em in storage. ..

Since I was the one who bought it, can I confirm that this is the only
original poster that had the Hildebrandt artwork on it?  I really enjoy
the artwork on this poster vs. the Jung artwork.  Although the Jung is
fairly classic, the Hildebrandt has something about it that I really
like.  Can't wait to get his one linen-backed and on the wall.

Was this a good price?  It seems as though I got it for a good
  price.

As to all the debate, I too was sucked in, thinking it a US onesheet, and
when I do I generally just blow it off and try to ignore it - it's a selling
tactic to get people to look at your auction, and though I may disagree with
it, it happens all the time, and won't ever go away, so I just deal with it
and go back to whatever else I was looking at, and not lose sleep over it,
  that's for sure.

By the way, eBay did already refund my listing fees, so it looks like
I'll have to relist the item, darnit.  I do have a phone number for eBay
that's been very handy lately, so I think I'll give 'em another call to see if
I can light a fire under their butts to get my auction relisted.

This guy Rick can't win.

People have asked for direct links to auction items to save
them time. That's what he did, for an item that (heaven forbid) isn't a US
language one sheet.

So he used BOLD. BFD.

So he paid eBay for the use of BOLD and that's why his link
was bold. BFD.

Not all sellers who list enormous numbers of items feel they
want to pay eBay to have a thumbnail for every single item they list. Fine don't
ever go look at their auctions. No thumbnail, can't be any good, seller is
obviously HIDING SOMETHING. Easy - avoid all their items.

You don't like Rick, then block his email address and you

Some of you are carrying on like Rick did something seriously

I am a great believer in the use of the English language as it
can be very persuasive in getting one's point across while at the same time,
improper use can cause the reverse effect.  Adjectives such as "jerk"
inflame without really making the necessary point.  I believe that had
such words as misleading or deceiving been used in lieu of jerk a better point
may have been made and I am certain this is the connotation which JR meant in
his email.  There are others who also do this but they don't flood mopo
  with their misleading wares.

When a person advertises posters in bold letters as a ruse to get
you to look at his posters he is a deceiver.  Take a look at all of his
auctions and you will note the deliberate omission of a small picture of each
poster in the main listings.  This "bait" advertising forces you to click
on the listing and lo and behold, it is not a US poster.  Note listings
stating "rare style" and they are most always foreign posters.

I fully agree with JR's frustrations with these types of sellers
and have developed my own searching methods which include (most of the time)
not to look at sellers who bait you with language such as his and deliberately
omit pictures.  It makes searching easier, faster and less
  frustrating.

And along with the daybill version of the red profile was the composite
colour shots one sheet in Australia from THE GODFATHER.

I'd have to agree that the red profile UK one sheet is the one to have,
though. Well, it's the one I bothered to keep, anyway.

And as far as the US was concerned, the book was the DA VINCI CODE of
the day. A classic trash read and genuine page-turner that had the sniff
that it was written by someone who had some inside scope to the Mob,
unlike DA VINCI which was just re-hashed from other and far more thought
provoking books. DA VINCI is kind of THE CELESTINE PROPHECY of its
period. Or maybe CHARIOTS OF THE GODS.

Re: [MOPO] "King Kong" gets an extended cut

2006-08-06 Thread Phil Edwards Cinema Arts

Funny how some films polarise opinion... and blind it.

EYES WIDE SHUT did the same thing. Loveed, hated it. Not a lot in between.

KING KONG was not a "bust". It made a fortune, and it won the Oscars for
which it was nominated. No, not successful at all. But for some reason,
people either hated it or loved it.. or liked it, but those who hated it
did what they usually do. They disparaged everything about it and it's
director. After LOTR, anything Jackson did was going to be a victim of
tall poppy syndrome.

And a lot of people hated KONG long before they saw it. They were
always going to hate, no matter what it was like. Heck, don't you go
RE-MAKING a "classic", ya hear? Spielberg copped the same thing over WAR
OF THE WORLDS, except that wasn't as MUCH of a "classic" as KONG, so he
only got half the bucket tipped on him and also made a thoroughly
modern and disturbing version of Wells' book, and like Wells (if not
George Pal) utilised the SF genre for social comment.

Jackson planned KING KONG long before LOTR, but Disney came out with
MIGHTY JOE YOUNG and put big gorilla pictures on the nose. Jackson put
KONG on the backburner and then Jackson had to fight (initially) to get
LOTR made as he wanted it to - as a trilogy - He proved he knew what he
was doing. And that let him make KONG the way he wanted. Like LOTR (each
chapter) Jackons' "version" suffered a fatal "flaw". The amount of mylar
film coud not fit on a single platter at a multiplex, and he was under
the usual pressure to deliver a shorter film so more sessions (even
staggered over multiple print bookings) could be run to make the candy
bar receipts flourish. Film is an art/entertainment medium that is
dictated by the size of platter on the projectors... and how many times
a day exhibitors can get people past that candy bar and buy that 2000%
marked-up crap.

I suspect Jackon's new film will hark back to something like HEAVENLY
CREATURES, which remains the "forgotten" Peter Jackson film. And that's
full of SPFX, except unless you know where to look, or for the obvious
fantasy scenes, they serve the plot and characters.

People who have a big success are always headed for a "fall". Why do you
think James Cameron hasn't directed since TITANIC? How do you follow one
of the biggest films ever - a film that generated huge repeat business -
and is now thought as "uncool" by all those who loved it then, saw it
2-3-4 times It's called GWTW-itis.

I guess the thing that I find disappointing is the way people can be so
openly contemptuous of the talent and success of others in the film
making arena. I'm sure there are a few silent MOPO members who actually
work in film making in some capacity, and actually know how hard the
whole process is.

As for $207 million budget if you don't know how studio accounting
practices work

it at #36 on the list of all time top money makers world-wide. Box

... heck, even if they spent another $100 million on promotion,
everyone involved did much better than just "break even" (except
perhaps by Hollywood accounting standards). If you figure in the DVD
money, I think they probably did very well, maybe getting 3 bucks back
for every 1 they spent. Only in today's Hollywood, where if you don't
make back at least 5 bucks for every dollar spent can a movie that
brings in over half a billion dollars at the box office be somehow
considered a "bust". People have got awfully greedy recently.

I'm not about to be suckered into popping for no 3-disc set, but I'll
definitely Netflix this extended edition when it comes out. I'd love
for the added material to be good enough to allow me to bump my rating
up to at least 8 out of 10 if not higher. That was certainly the case
with Jackson's LORD OF THE RINGS films... the extended DVD versions
are definitely superior to the theatrical releases.

I was waiting for someone to ask. I had a great time on Movie Poster Bid

last-minute technical glitch kept the sniper program from being available, so
you had to bid at the last second the old-fashioned way and I enjoyed the

last-second bid and snatch a nice item. And I managed to snag quite a few
quality sci-fi posters at good prices. But nobody was really stealing

to the next level. He's done a great job in just 5 months, to stage
an auction of this quality and pull in $30,000 worth of sales.

The final sales figure could have been maybe $20,000 higher, except for
there were a fair amount of items with reserves... not my favorite thing...
but those with reasonable reserves actually had them met and even bid up from
there. But some of those hidden reserves looked to me... based on the bids I
saw and reserves still not being met... well, some reserves seemed
quite a bit too high. I think doing that is self-defeating for sellers
and only serves to frustrate bidders when they bid a nice item up to a
very reasonable price and the page is still saying "reserve not met."

Once again I want to point out the obvious to the sellers who have read
this far: If you are going to set your reserve to high-retail, you shouldn't
even bother putting the item up for auction! Just leave it in your store or on
your website with the retail price tacked on for all of us to see. Don't put
it up for a so-called "auction" that isn't really an auction (because
you're not going to take less than high-retail for it, no matter how many bids
it gets). When you do this, you make us play this stupid guessing game which
no one wins because most people are NOT... repeat NOT going to pay high-retail
for most items at most auctions. What's the point? For all but the rarest
items, if you want to pay high-retail you don't have to screw around with
bidding on a auction -- you just go to someone's website or eBay store and pay
the retail price for the damn thing.

So, in line with this subject thread, I do wish some sellers
would STOP playing these frustrating high-hidden-reserve mind games with
the bidders. The purpose of a reserve is to protect yourself in a reasonable
fashion against having to sell something at a giveaway price -- it is not
meant to guarantee you a high-retail price at auction. They're called
auctions, you know, not retail sales events. If you don't want to hold out the
possibility to the bidders of getting something at a genuine buy or
at least low-retail price, then don't call it an auction...  just
put the item up on your site with a For Sale sign on it -- and the
price clearly marked -- and stop wasting our time.

Whoopee... I can say stuff like that now that I'm not running MPB
anymore! C'mon, you sellers, keep on paying your rising eBay fees if you
insist, but commit at least some of your time and inventory to MPB and stop
screwin' around! Those sellers who did it right this weekend at MPB are
dividing up the 30 grand in sales among themselves even as you read this. You
could have been one of them.

Re: [MOPO] Nicks, chips and paper loss - A question.

2006-08-04 Thread Phil Edwards Cinema Arts

Just my personal take on descriptions:
I'd place a"nick" at 1/8" or less and not
necessarily mean that it was including paper loss.
A "small" border tear means that there's no paper
loss and the tear does not intrude into the image area of the poster. Any paper
loss would be indicated. If  a poster has  a wide white border, and
has tear/tears over an inch, I'd probably be inclined to give  a better
idea of size of tear/s.

Paper loss means missing paper, whether coursed
through fold separations (i.e. not a clean split, but actually missing image or
white border paper loss) or tears. Anything bigger than that comes more under
the term "papr out" or "paper missing".

Of course the more detail one gives often gives a
misleading idea of the overall condition of a poster making it sound far, far
worse than itactually is. We routinely receive feedback that says, "far better
condition than described". Maybve we'd sell more if we were less pedantic about
describing condition issues. Even big digital images "lie" as to seeing what's
what with a poster, and while it takes longer, we prefer a verbal description.
If we say Near Mint-Mint (our top rating, rarely given) it means that there's
nothing discernible. Of course when one is wading through several hundred items
a week and not using a batallion of "buddy graders" to do the work, itis
possible that through eyestrain one misses something.

But we  also live in the age of "condition
freak" where 50, 60, 70 year old posters are supposed to still look perfect. And
if they don't, through the fact that they were used for the purpose for which
they were designed, and were never intended for public collectability, they
can have a facelift through linen backing and cosmetic enhancement so they LOOK
perfect. It has to look "perfect" because we live in an age of "perfection". One
only has to look at the degree that many films are "cleaned up" to for DVD
release, but where the "clean-up" has actually removed detail through removal of
grain texture from the film as it was shot. It's like the hard, cold sound that
so many CDs have when conpared to the "warmth" of the original analog vinyl
versions.

There are some collectors who cannot stand the
sight of a single fold line, completely forgetting that this is EXACTLY how
movie posters were made to be seen when created for the use for which they were
created.

Condition is sometimes (often?) in the eye of the
beholder. And that eye can be determined whether it's someone trying to sell it
or someone trying to find reasons to get a price down.

All sorts of stuff.

Subject: [MOPO] Nicks, chips and paper
  loss - A question.

I was just wondering how others employ terms
describing areas of paper loss on poster borders.

I generally use the term "nick" for anything
under, say, a quarter-inch at its widest end, usually triangular or V-shaped.
I use the term "paper loss" for anything larger than that and/or of a
different shape (half-moon or some such, most often).

I've never used the word "chip," though I've seen
many other vendors do so (auction houses in particular), and often for quite
large and significant areas of paper loss, like missing corners. "Chip" would
seem to imply a smaller, less significant area of paper loss to
  me.

I'm wondering whether other sellers and
collectors have specific criteria for how they use or read these terms. Sorry
if this seems like a pedantic question, but any opinions would be
  welcome.

  Thanks,
  Dave

[MOPO] WTB/or TRADE- Martin and Lewis, Abbott and Costello, 60s comedy "classics", quads and/or daybills

2006-08-02 Thread Phil Edwards Cinema Arts

Hi all,

I have a serious client looking for Abbott and/or Costello, Hope and/or
Crosby, Martin and/or Lewis US one sheets.

They already have A&C MEET FRANKENSTEIN, MEET THE INVISIBLE MAN, MEET
THE KILLER, AFRICA SCREAMS on the A&C front and a couple of lesser solo
Costello titles.

SCARED STIFF and ARTISTS AND MODELS on the M&L front, and a couple of
lesser Lewis titles.

They have a couple of ROAD titles, but looking for others.

Many 60's "classics" - MAD, MAD WORLD (Cinerama only) 1 sheets, OUR MAN
FLINT, Matt Helm US one sheets, LET IT BE US one sheet (without cracked
folds), UNCLE one sheets, DIRTY DOZEN orig US one sheet. You get the
picture.

Also he's after 60s quads, LONGEST DAY (bunker version only), TIME
MACHINE, FORBIDDEN PLANET, WAR OF THE WORLDS, WHEN WORLDS COLLIDE
and second string 50s and 60s SF US and/or one sheets and/or maybe
quads, latter dependent on artwork.

English language text is pre-requisite, so they have advised are
interested in (a) US one sheets (b) Australian one sheets (c) British
quads, and depending on artwork, might consider DCs or daybills on
non-US material.

Please send pics, condition and prices to
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
