Hi Kendra - Boy, do I feel like an idiot now! I hope you didn't spend much
time looking for this. It's actually published by the National Council of
Teachers of English!! The title is Standards in Practice, K-2 and it's by
Linda K. Crafton. You could probably inter-library-loan it if you didn't want
to buy it, or I noticed amazon.com had used copies for as little as $4,
including shipping. I'll be going to school Monday, so I'll check and make
positively sure this is the right book for SoW. It is an excellent book,
though, for sure. Sorry. Bev

I also teach kindergarten.  I have not used "Letter of the Week" in
years!   We immerge our students in letters - focusing on the letters in their
names initially.  Our K - 2 does use Wilson Fundations, but I do not do all the
activities.  I pick & choose.  I also introduce upper & lower case together.  I
typically begin guided reading groups in November with my kinders.  If I were
you, I would certainly talk with the new principal to see if you could make
some changes in your classroom.  You might want to look at Building Blocks by
Dottie Hall & Pat Cunningham.

Susan and Kendra,

I feel that I am stuck at the present time with the letter of the week
because it is what "the team has always done". Being the new kid on

the team I rearranged the introduction of the letters but did not give
up on the system. We have a new principal starting this fall so I am
hopeful that he will want to look at some different ways to do things.
Kendra...as far as your question about thinking strategies with
kindergarteners, I was determined not to "dumb down" the thining
strategies that I did with my first graders so I taught my kids what
schema was and why it was important. I carefully chose books that
would demonstrate how we use our schema (tooth losing books were a
hit) I also taught making connections and started to teach the
difference between a surface type connection and connections that help
us to understand what we are reading. Many of my colleagues said "you
are using the word schema with kinders?" YES! It is kind of a goofy
word so they remember it! What will be interesting to me is to see
what happens when my kinders get mixed with the other kinders in first
grade. Will what I taught them stick? Will it make a difference. I
have a friend in first grade who is going to help me with that
observation. Baby steps I guess!

There are some excellent resources out there for teaching letters (and other
stuff) using children's names. One is Beyond the Names Chart: Using
Children's Names for Word Study by Debbie Diller and I can't remember the other
titles. But I'm pretty sure a couple more come from Scholastic.

Re: [MOSAIC] Guided Reading Research

2008-07-06 Thread Angela Hampton

Hi Susan,

I just did some research, along with some other grad. students and two profs.,
on guided reading in first grade classrooms.

There isn't a lot of research that we found that supports/negates the use of
guided reading. There is research that supports reading recovery methods, which
is what a lot of people seem to draw on as evidence that it works. Of course
reading recovery is a completely different picture from what it looks like in a
classroom with 20+ students and a teacher who has not received (usually)
intensive training like they do in reading recovery.

So here is one study that looks directly at guided reading. Of course I've seen
many different manifestations of "guided reading"...some people use the term
guided reading when guiding a whole class through an instructional level text,
others are talking about more of a reading recovery model. Variations are the
norm.

Iaquinta, A. (2003). A Qualitative Case Study of Professional Development: Two
first grade teachers’ efforts to implement the innovation of Guided Reading.
Dissertation Abstracts International. (AAT 3090950)
--she also has a shorter article in RRQ or Reading Teacher (can't remember
which it is)

Rasinski, T.V. & Hoffman, J.V. (2003). Oral reading in the school literacy
curriculum. Reading Research Quarterly, 38, 510-522.
--this one is interesting because they make the point about how little we
really know (as researchers:) about guided reading (towards the end, I think)

Most of the other studies were more focused on grouping practices, group
membership and differentiation between groups. If you'd like the entire list of
refs. send your email and I'll attach the file.

Good luck! I'd love to hear what else you find.

Angela

2008-07-06 Thread Janice Friesen
Thanks for sharing the URL. I listened to the show and I thought
that Maggie Jackson sounded like she has a nuanced view. Technology
is really changing our minds and it is important to notice what is
happening. It does seem true that it is more difficult to focus on
what is important because we are so busy. Computers have made it
easier to do things, but they have not really saved us time, they
have made us more busy. I would never go back and I love what I can
do because of technology. I also think that it helps us to learn.
Computers have changed literacy. The things talked about in To
Understand and Mosaic of Thought are SO important and they need to be
applied to use of technology also... and those teachers who do not
use technology need to be aware of how it can be beneficial and also
how it can be a distraction.
