Re: [MOSAIC] Listerv question
Have you looked at The Daily 5? It's really just a management system that you can use and tweak to meet your needs for reading workshop. If you haven't this might be something to look at. The kids work on reading independently, with partners, word work, writing and listening for lower grades. Even if you don't fully implement it, just some of the language and lessons they use with the kids to get them to really engage, and stay engaged in reading, is worth the $16 you'll spend on the book. If you don't know much about it you can google it and I'm sure you'll come up with a lot. There are 30 students in that classroom and it is very hard for the teacher to get through reading groups with the students while the others are engaged in something meaningful. Basically, there are five groups and when we are working with each group, she asks the rest of the class to work on their paper for writer’s workshop. I observed that students do not do this. As many times as we tell them to get back to their seats or get to work they heads are always somewhere else. It bothers me to see this and I really need advice on what would be the best way to keep the other students engaged in their work and what should they be working on during that time? Re: [MOSAIC] file folder lesson for schema
I think that you are right to want the children/teachers to have the opportunity to use the format, but maybe not the same books. Have you discussed with your Literacy Coach the idea of maybe having a day where the other grades could look at this, then come back together with books that they think might also make for great lessons. This way they could see the format, but have the opportunity to look through their books and think of ones that could work. It would also give everyone a chance to ask questions and maybe solidify some ideas for themselves. I think teachers often want to copy while they get their feet wet for fear of doing it wrong. If they have a chance to discuss why the books might/might not be good for these lessons they would feel more confident using different books, but the same format. I think that having your blue print in front of them would make the task easier as they make their own lessons and this way you are sharing, but also giving them and your literacy coach a chance to create their own lesson. Karen 1st/MI Angela Almond [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: The literacy facilitator wants me to share the file folder lesson with third grade so they can start doing it. Re: [MOSAIC] whisper phones
I bought some over the ear whisper phones with a grant last year. I bought them through homeroomteacher.com they are considerably more expensive than the CANDL foundation phones, but I like them because the little ones struggle holding the phone and reading. I also use them in writing workshop and it cuts down on the noise, especially early in the year when they are stretching out the words aloud. Karen 1st/MI [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Whisper phones can be bought from CANDLfoundation.com. A principal can obtain 6 free. A case of 24 costs $48.00. I like these phones because the ends swivel. Re: [MOSAIC] DRA levels- 1st grade DRA ceiling
The first grade teachers in my building did this simply becuase there is so much involved in the higher testing - the writing can be a a tough one for the first grade students. I had several who I knew could pass this last one, but aren't strong writers so I stopped at a 24. We do go to a 28 and stop- which is our end of 2nd grade requirement - for first we have a 20 requirement. Those who took the 28 did the non-fiction - going on the assumption that this is the more difficult and if they could read/write the non-fiction they were a true 28. Re: [MOSAIC] DRA, accuracy, comprehension and fluency to arrive at a reading level....
We are using the DRA2 - this is our 2nd year with it and only our first with the comprehension part. We did as another poster suggested and set a cap. Well it's not official because really we are the only one of 3 buildings doing the whole reading/comprehension/fluency part of the reading - the other 2 buildings are still only doing the reading...yes this is a point of contention - but the administration isn't making them - or us but what's the point if all your doing is the reading? Anyhow - enough about my gripes - as I said we do have a cap, the first grade teachers simply decided to stop at a 24 or 28 (this is our end of 2nd grade level), for 1st we are expected to have them at an 18-20. Whether we stopped at the 24 or 28 was up to us we could make the call depending on the child because of the writing component with the 28. We're much happier and really why push them? Besides most really don't have the writing skills to do it really well, not that some can't, but for many even my higher children, getting the higher thinking and writing and then amount of writing involved it gets to be a bit much. At some point as someone said it really is too much just to keep pushing simply so we can write that number down. Karen 1st/MI - Don't be flakey. Get Yahoo! Re: [MOSAIC] Using the same book for all students
Just a thought - and I don't know if it comes in this format or not - but have you looked for books on tape? Check with your local library it might be available, then when the students who can read it are working you can have your strugglers listen to it while following along. Karen 1st/MI Christine Ann Mathews [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi Everyone, I am looking for some tips on literature circles. Last year, my students were learning about the California Natives and we were reading Island of the Blue Dolphins. I wanted all of my students to read this text because it was directly connected to our social studies unit, a research project, and an upcoming field trip. I had a broad range of students, so as you can imagine, some of the students were reading the book easily while others were struggling through it. We had 1 hour dedicated to reading instruction and I was lucky enough to have parent volunteers coming in to read with kids, but it seemed like to took way too much time to get through the book. Have any of you been in a similar situation? If so, how do you allow your whole class to read the same book in literature circles and get through the book in a timely manner? How do you approach a book like this with struggling students? There were times when I would take turns reading with them and I also had them buddy up with a supportive and encouraging peer. I thought about using the book as a read aloud, but it would have taken even longer to get through it. Any suggestions?
