Rosie, Sounds like a plan, in the meantime, document, document, document. Any way in which you adapt your instruction or the curriculum can be considered a Tier 1 or 2 intervention. Make sure to track the intervention, how often you did it and for how long and in what group size. Have assessment data for before and after each adaptation. This may help speed up the process when you are able to bring this child's issues to you Child Study Team (everyone has a different name for this team:) Good luck with this. Re: [MOSAIC] gifted cluster class
Do you have to use the third grade level anthology, or can you use the ones that reflect the students' reading levels? This would still show your fidelity to the series, but allow students to at least be reading at an appropriate level, with skills they are more likely to need. If the district argues with this, I would wonder how much they care about the education of the gifted students, and why they even bother to cluster them. (I question that anyway due to your question.) I do this with math texts all the time for my gifteds. good luck, lisa 2/3 IL --- [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I am really not sure how to answer this question.? Re: [MOSAIC] gifted cluster class
I have been debating about whether to weigh in. I personally don't like the notion of thick and thin questions. If a child needs an answer, really needs an answer--regardless of the depth of the question, I feel that this particular way of addressing question is very value laden. In the new Mosaic of Thought, questions are addressed differently. They are classified by purpose. I like this so much better. We ask questions that are clarifying (that may be answered in the text, or that may be asked in the classroom to make sure we understand --directions, position, etc.), speculative (exploring predictions and suppositions) and rhetorical (the BG questions that linger, that may be unanswered). I want kids asking clarifying questions--I want them to fully understand, even if those answers are right there in the text. I want kids to speculate--to take chances, to make suppositions, to step out of the box of the known. And I want kids getting those unanswered questions into play and get comfortable with the idea of sometimes NOT knowing, sometimes pondering and wondering. A good friend of mine recently told the story of a physicist who pondered an unanswered mathematical question for what amounts to a lifetime--one question-- and finally answered what was assumed to be an unanswerable question. I guess the point I trying to make, is why not just question. Then classify and talk about those questions. When is it important to ask clarifying questions? Why is it important? Let me tell you, if I am lost--in a text or in an unfamiliar city, I want to be comfortable asking clarifying questions. Is the what this phrase means? Is this the right exit for the zoo? But most of all I want children to know that the world inquiry involves pondering unanswered questions. One question is not thicker or thinner, or better or worse (in my opinion, please understand), it simply is valid if it NEEDS to be asked. My student's questions are so much better than the ones at the end of the story. Lori, Looking at your response and reference to the new type of questioning in Mosaic 2, The Reading Teacher had an interesting article in December 2005. It's called The Princess Storyteller, Clara Clarifier, Quincy Questioner and the Wizard: Reciprocal teacher adapted for kindergarten students. It is aimed for kindergarten but I think all early elementary students would enjoy the puppets and it is a great visual for them to be reminded what they need to be thinking about during the story. Re: [MOSAIC] gifted cluster class
Rosie, You're at a Reading First school? Could you use the basal, but go deeper with their work once they finish the requirements? Doesn't the HM teacher's guide have suggestions for gifted learners? Could you find other books that have connected themes and run lit circles with the kids? Could you do lit circles with the basal? Just thinking off the top of my head. I am not aware of each students classification at this time.? As far as teaching from the basal, all I can tell you is that my entire county is required to work with the HM basal series.? We are supposed to be using it with fidelty meaning supplementing with any other materials.? Of course this is crazy and many of us do, however, we could get in trouble depending on who enters the classroom.?
