Re: [MOSAIC] Saddened by Administration Mandate: Students and Choice R eading In Class

2012-05-28 Thread Renee
I don't consider this rambling. I think these stories are important. I
think they should be posted on Facebook, shared with parents, other
teachers, family members, the community. They should be written as
letters to the editor of local and national papers, and included as
blog comments when applicable.

The idea that if a child can read, he/she can pass the science portion
of the CA Standards test is absolutely ludicrous. No matter how
language literate you are, that is not going to help you discuss the
water cycle, make decisions about the Periodic Table of Elements, etc.
And while I'm at it, who in their right mind decided that the Periodic
Table of Elements was good fifth grade material? I personally never
heard of the periodic table until I was in high school, and I seem to
have functioned pretty well all my life.

I am retired now, but I think it is just a matter of time before some
teacher with actual backbone stands up and sues their school district
for evaluating them on something they were forced to do. And I will
cheer on that day.

never thought of our situation as the result of our being bullied.
Furthermore last year our DAIT (intervention specialists) team
instructed our district to not teach science at all in grades K-5.
Their rationale was that we needed to focus on English language

Congratulations, Jennifer! Sadly, you are a rare breed these days.
In their heart of hearts, most administrators feel this way, I'm
sure.
However, they are being compelled by the 'Higher ups" and state/
federal

mandates (mandates that are created by people who have never taught.)
THANK YOU for being one who dares to do the right thing!

"Palmer, Jennifer" 5/25/2012 11:13 PM

Well, come work for me in one of my schools. I still believe in
student

choice of reading materials, that good teachers are better than
programs, and the best way to teach a child to read is to become a
good

observer of the child--he will show you the way he learns best.

I am saddened by these stories... It is why I went into
administration To have a little more leverage to make things
right.

5/26/12 NH I read the book while taking a graduate course (the title
caught my eyes/brain) it wasn't required. Another student in the class
read it like a sponge and used it in her research work and is probably
using it still with 7-8 graders. I thought it was a wonderful book and
totally agre with the philosophy. I applaud teachers trying to
create the same climate in their classrooms despite Ads. saying
otherwise.

Re: [MOSAIC] Saddened by Administration Mandate: Students and Choice R eading In Class

2012-05-26 Thread Renee
I wish all the Ali's in the nation could simply close their doors and
do what's best for kids, but when there are 14 unannounced observations
per quarter where the teacher's very livelihood depends on whether
she/he is doing exactly what it says on a piece of paper she/he turned
in a week earlier, this is easier said than done.

An administrator who says you can't do conferencing because "they need
direct instruction" is beyond stupid. What is more direct than an
individual conference? So I would write in my lesson plans
"individualized direct instruction - specific skills as needed" and
"fluency practice" (the rest of the class) and go from there. Then, if
an administrator came in while I was conferencing, I could say that I
was doing direct instruction.

I fear for my future, when these children will be running the world.

I hear you!  Our new principal wants to buy an anthology and
"programs".  She doesn't believe in conferencing because they need
"direct instruction".  It's all very frightening.  Reading Workshop
and RTI are district initiatives and much money has been spent on
them, but.. they RTI disappeared this year. I'm guessing
Reading Workshop will go next year! Maybe we should write the next
novel about the future with non-readers because of all this nonsense!

Well, come work for me in one of my schools. I still believe in student choice
of reading materials, that good teachers are better than programs, and the best
way to teach a child to read is to become a good observer of the child--he
will show you the way he learns best.

I am saddened by these stories... It is why I went into administration To
have a little more leverage to make things right.

2012-05-25 Thread Beverlee Paul
And it's such a loss to lose you from the classrooms and teachers you
worked with. Five years ago I would have been heartbroken to know you
changed positions. Today, I'm thrilled. Why? Because when you take all
teaching decision-making away from the teachers and put it into the hands
of administrators, we have got to provide our very best teachers to the
administrative field or we'll get what we ask for, just by default.
 So...thank you.

Oh, I'd love to work in your schools. I've always wondered if I got
misplaced and should have been born on the east coast. Actually my
grandfather came to Nebraska on the train from New York during the
depression with 2 sets of clothes and a trunk full of books to teach in a
1-room school with 43 students.df And I'm not so sure but his 43 were
easier to teach than what we face today.
