[mou-net] woodcocks, Rachel Lily Preserve, Mendota Heights
This evening at sunset, heard some woodcock activity in the Rachel Lily field by the barn right off hwy 110; walked up the grass path that heads east behind the barn, and the birds were heard on the hill next to the vernal pond. It was an impromptu search, without a flashlight, and getting dark, so none were seen. [mou-net] Loggerhead Shrike, Dakota Cty
This evening I visited Goodhue Lake Byllesby Park, hoping to find Common Loons, as I have in the last several years, but didn't find one. Small flocks of migrant ducks and White Pelicans were present. About 6:30 pm, I drove into Randolph Industrial Park, car windows open, enjoying the songs of Eastern and Western Meadowlarks. As I turned left toward the pond behind the church, a Loggerhead Shrike landed on a post about 10 feet from the car. It stayed perched for some time, until it saw prey and dove into the grass. I saw its shorter black bill and broader black mask than the Northern's easily, and it was the highlight of my day. Other sightings today and earlier this week were: FOY Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, 1 at my feeder this am, and 1 at Goodhue Boat Landing on Lake Byllesby this evening Small flocks of Ring-necked Duck, Scaup, Bufflehead, Redhead, Canvasback, Pied-billed Grebe, DC Cormorant, C. Goldeneye, C. Merganser, and A. Coot are still present at Lake Byllesby in both Dakota and Goodhue Cty, and also in Industrial Park ponds. White Pelicans (15): viewed from Lakeside Cemetery (I had seen a larger flock, 31, at Lakeside on Sunday). An Osprey flew over the dam at Goodhue Cty Park on Sunday, and I had my FOY White Pelicans (7) flying overhead, soon after that. There are some mudflats beginning to appear on the northwest side of Lake Byllesby now, as high waters from the snowmelt subside. As almost always, a male N. Cardinal at Lakeside Cemetery flew down from a tree, and began to attack his image in my car's side mirrors as soon as I walked away from the car. He waits for any vehicle to enter the area, so he can begin defense against his reflection in the side mirror . He also fights his image as it is reflected on a nearby dark gravestone with a polished "mirror" finish. [mou-net] Mpls Lake Hiawatha Update - 3 Species of Mergansers + Night-Herons
A bit late posting but Lake Hiawatha has been a great place to easily view and study all three species of mergansers in breeding plumage. This morning there were many Common, Hooded, and Red-breasted Mergansers, clustered near shore because of the remaining lake ice. Other species include Ring-necked Ducks, Common Loon, Gadwall, Wood Ducks, Scaup sp., Bufflehead, ... In addition, the Black-crowned Night-Herons returned a couple of days ago, day-roosting in the trees on Minnehaha Creek near the Lake Hiawatha outflow (just west of 28th Ave. S). Easy parking and paved path access: park on 28th Ave. S. along Lake Hiawatha. The night-herons are high in the trees along the paved path to the lake, on the left just after crossing the pedestrian crosswalk. Diana Doyle S. [mou-net] Eagle Time in Hennepin
Like others we've had lots of Bale Eagle action this year, but today took the cake: while on the phone with my wife I watched a string of 5 BALD EAGLES, only feet apart, drift off the lake (Red Rock) and low over our house. All five birds were at various stages of immaturity. A few seconds later I spotted a higher altitude eagle going the opposite direction. The expanded aeration area on the lake this year has hastened the ice melt and exposed many dead and dying fish, making it a constant field day for the eagles as well as the diving ducks and mergs -- and the gulls, both Ring-billed and Herring. Also today, our foy COMMON LOON. Other recent arrivals have been Phoebe and Belted kingfisher. Of six spring migrations living on Red Rock Lake, this has been far and away our best for waterfowl watching. Spoiled we are. Best to all, Don Darnell & Michelle Kern Eden Prairie SW Hennepin Cty. [mou-net] Ospreys at Hyland Park
An Osprey was sitting on the nest at Hyland-Bloomington this morning.
[mou-net] Out and About in SE Anoka and Washington Co's Today...
Today's birds while on an errand run: * Tree Swallows over several marshes today! * My phoebe came back overnight. Was not here yesterday, but this AM it was upgrading the nest under the eaves and singing away. * More B. Eagles everywhere, saw at least another 5 today (1 taking a fish to the nest in midst of southern end of White Bear Lake), and an immature fishing in the almost open water of Goose Lake in WBL; Another 2-3 on the wing overhead. Went by nest on Keller Lake; traffic too fast to see any birds. Nest at intersection of I-35E and W has an eagle sitting on eggs, and the one just a mile or so to the south (seen from I-35W) on the north end of Peltier Lake is also active. One just flew over my marsh as I was writing this. There must be another nest pretty close-by that I have not found yet... * Saw a head on the nest platform that Ospreys use just west of intersection of I-35 and Hwy 23/Lake Drive (Anoka Co)/Hwy 97 (Wash Co) on S end of Howard Lake, but didn't have time to determine if Osprey or not. There's enough open water at the edges of the lakes now that they could find fish if they were lucky... * Turkey Vultures circling on thermals... * Killdeer, Song Sparrows, Grackles, Robins, Red-winged BB's... * Scaup (sp), Eagles, Great Blue Herons, C. Geese, Ring-billed Gulls, and 1 swan (Trumpeter) were in the outwash of dam at S end of Peltier Lake in Centerville. * And a male No. Harrier over WBL, too. * Frog began singing last Saturday, in all ponds, marshes, etc. as the ice melted in the shallower areas. Spring is here in the TC area. Soon to come to the north, too, we promise! Holly Peirson Columbus, SE Anoka Co. Re: [mou-net] Osprey
Thanks for the update. Ospreys are also back in their tower nest in Victoria at the Lowry Nature Center. I saw the pair there on Monday night and took some pictures. I imagine the pair will be building up their nest. Fr. Please report any sightings osprey, including when and where it was seen and what it appeared to be doing (carrying nesting material, flying, perching, etc). The email for reports is jvengl...@threeriversparkdistrict.org. Also, in the Star Tribune today there is an article about the nest that was on a light pole on 169/62 freeway light. Any reports about osprey seen in the extended area would be appreciated. It's speculated they may find a cell phone tower or another tall man made structure to nest on.
