[mou-net] Grounded Warblers/Rice Co.
Hi All— Erika and I took a late afternoon stroll in the East Unit of the Cannon Valley Wilderness Area just south of Northfield, Rice Co. We saw 9 species of warblers, but what was interesting is that many fed on the ground. Ground feeders included restarts, Blackburnian and Black-throated Green warblers. We suspect this relatively unusual feeding stratum was due to the chilly temperatures (50s) and high winds (gusts up to 40 mph). Photos are on my blog: http://dantallmansbirdblog.blogspot.com dan -- Dan or Erika Tallman Northfield, Minnesota daner...@gmail.com http://sites.google.com/site/tallmanorum http://dantallmansbirdblog.blogspot.com http://picasaweb.google.com/danerika The White Album: Portraits of Minnesota Birdshttp://www.blurb.com/b/3992062-the-white-album-portraits-of-minnesota-birds-dan-t Two Years Among the Odonates http://www.blurb.com/bookstore/detail/3467428 the best shod travel with wet feet...Beware of all enterprises that require new clothes ”—H. [mou-net] Whitewater State Park sightings
Saturday, May 11, 8:30 a.m., several of us relocated the singing Yellow-throated Warbler by the Whitewater State Park nature store parking lots, enjoying views from as close as 15 feet while the bird foraged along branches and sang. It was on the picnic grounds side of the parking lot toward the Whitewater River and swimming beach. Later yesterday morning, we also saw four Louisiana Waterthrush in several locations along the Whitewater River and a small tributary in the vicinity of the group campground. Other somewhat surprising sightings included a flyover Pine Siskin, and, at the state park headquarters feeders, an adult Red-headed Woodpecker coming to the feeder. The feeders were incredible, with outstanding views of 1 Lincoln's Sparrow, 2 White-crowned Sparrows, 3 female Purple Finches, plus 12+ Rose-breasted Grosbeaks and several Northern Orioles at once and many other species. Mid-afternoon yesterday had a Horned Grebe on a flooded area north of Rt. 74 several miles east of Alba. [mou-net] Crane Meadows NWR Field Day- Morrison County
Joined in the heavy cold wind by folks from the Brainerd Bird Club and a couple of hardy young families with early elementary aged children, we managed to sight 43 species on an adapted 2 mile saunter through the oak savannah and restored prairie. Highlights, some new to the composite listing for this spring walk): American Pipits (on the burned section of the entrance)!! Blue-Headed Vireo(2), Olive-sided Flycatcher, Wilson's Chestnut-sided Warbler, many more BWhites than usual. Orange-crowned Warblers(3), (9 warbler species total), Horned Grebes and Barred Owl. Many notable misses, e.g., Catbird, yellow-throated vireo, B-Gray Gnatcatcher, Red-headed WoodpeckeY. Adding to the list of sightings outlying the NWR got us up near the 60-70 specie count, of note Swainson's Hawk, Swainson's Thrush, Rose-breasted Grosbeak. mjb Join or Leave mou-net: http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=mou-net Archives: http://lists.umn.edu/archives/mou-net.html

Re: [mou-net] Grounded Warblers
I had the same experience as Dan Tallman yesterday but at Black Dog Park in Burnsville (near power plant). I had 16 species of warblers and at least 11 species feeding on the ground out of the wind. I went back with my camera and was able to photograph 8 species plus Rose-breasted Grosbeak, Brown Thrasher, nesting Cooper's Hawk and a friendly Veery that walked up to me. Also, of note were Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Swainson's Thrush, Blue-headed Vireo, Least Flycatcher and Blue-gray Gnatcatcher. On the ground: American Redstart Yellow Warbler Black-throated Green Warbler Nashville Warbler Orange-crowned Warbler Blackburnian Warbler Yellow-rumped Warbler Palm Warbler Blackpoll Warbler Ovenbird The rest were low in the shrubs/trees: Tennessee Warbler Chestnut-sided Warbler Magnolia Warbler Black-and-White Warbler Wilson's Warbler Deanne Endrizzi Burnsville, Dakota Cty. [mou-net] Whimbrel, East Grand Forks, Polk County, 12 May 2013
Sandy Aubol and I spent the morning birding Polk County in northwestern Minnesota. We were pleased to see a WHIMBREL at the East Grand Forks sewage lagoons 2 sections north of highway 2 and 1 section west of of highway 220. The bird was traveling with a MARBLED GODWIT and flew over our vehicle while we were observing the first lagoon. We followed both birds until they landed at a muddy spot in the field east of the second lagoon. The bird stayed for fifteen minutes before it flew north. We tried to relocate the bird but failed. I suspect the bird has moved on; it did not give the impression that it was going to stay while we were observing it. Here are some really horrible photos of a great bird. [mou-net] May 10-12 W. Bloomington: 75 species without getting in the car!
I was without a vehicle (and without my trusted birding partner / wife) this weekend so I only birded areas I could reach easily on foot from my house near Bush Lake. Today I hit Bush Lake, Hyland Lake, Richardson Nature Center, and points in-between, and rang up 71 species (It should have been more! Lots of normal birds (like Great Egrets) have been oddly AWOL.). Waterthrush Orange-crowned Tennessee Lincoln's sparrow Veery (seen and not heard! as opposed to the usual heard and not seen!) Grey-cheeked and Swainson's thrushes Baltimore oriole Spotted sandpiper I doubt that the Hyland area was any different from other sites in central Minnesota, in that this weekend has been certified Yellow-Rumped Madness. [mou-net] 42nd Annual St. Paul Audubon Warbler Weekend
St. Paul Audubon Warbler Weekend at Villa Maria, Frontenac, MN (Goodhue County) on May 10-12 was an exciting combination of fallout warblers, thrushes, and other passerines, and late holdover species such as Horned Grebe, Red-breasted Nuthatch, Dark-eyed Junco, and American Tree Sparrow. Species included the first Redheads seen on the weekend in 42 years (among 11 duck species), the second Golden Eagle, Trumpeter Swan, Willet, Tufted Titmouse, Orchard Oriole, American Bittern, Prothonotary Warbler, and Louisiana Waterthrush. A total of 135 species were sighted including 24 warbler species. Gray-cheeked Thrush fallout was quite unusual, and the wind kept canopy warblers on the ground or at eye level. Some birds were almost oblivious of nearby observers in their zest to find food in the aftermath of 15+ inches of snow in the area. [mou-net] McLoed Co. GT Grackle and Brown Co. sightings
I did relocate the Great-tailed Grackle at the previously reported location in McLoed County today (5/12). As previously reported the homeowners, Terry and Joyce, are very nice and should be contacted first 320-587-5873 because the bird is far behind their house and is not likely seen without going through their property. The location is 3 miles south of Hutchinson on Hwy 15 and then 5.3 miles west on CR. 18. The bird was quieter and more shy than it has been in the past several days according to the homeowners which makes me think it may be about to re-locate. In Brown County I found two Eurasian Collared-Doves at the granary just south of the Hwy. 15 bridge in New Ulm. At Flandrau State Park and vicinity I found several species of warbler including Blackpoll, Magnolia, and Northern Parula. Two Barred Owls were calling back and forth to each other at 10:00am. At one point there was a Gray-cheeked Thrush and a Veery feeding on the trail together just in front of me for a long time and it was a great look at the stark contrast in coloration between the two species. I also found White-crowned Sparrow, Pileated Woodpecker, a flock of Pine Siskins, Swainson's Thrush and tons of Lincoln Sparrows.
