Yes, I use only HummZinger feeders (the best in my opinion), they don't drip
so they don't attract ants.. Plus they have a built in ant moat if you need
it, I have not had to use it..

Tanglefoot is horrible stuff if birds even touch it. I'd avoid it at all
costs outdoors. If you've ever worked with rehab, you know how awful it can
be, and people who bring in birds caught in it always say they never ever
expected birds to go near it.

Hi Everyone,

At around 12:45 pm today (11/22), I spotted a male Barrow's Goldeneye among
a small group of Common Goldeneyes on Lake Superior off 21st Ave. E, in
Duluth. This is most likely the same individual spotted on 11/17 by Peder

of the Lake Walk.

Thank you to Erik Bruhnke for stopping by with a scope and taking photos.

Saw a duck on Lake Vadnais this morning that doesn't quite look right for a
female mallard. It was swimming in the vicinity of some mallards but off by
itself. It appeared slightly smaller to me. It had an all black bill and the
markings looked slightly different as well. Could this be a hybrid of some
sort? I've posted a couple photos of it and included a mallard photo from the
same general area.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/gailw/4118376774/in/photostream/

There are hundreds of ring-necks on Vadnais plus more and more hooded
mergansers. There are still good numbers of goldeneye and we saw at least 3
canvas backs. Did not see any red heads today but did see a couple yesterday
along the south side of the lake along Vadnais Blvd. No swans today.

Would like to hear what folks have to say on the odd duck.

I was heading over to my credit union when I noticed a young red-tailed
hawk perched on a pole, with what appears to be a jess hanging from its
leg. This was near the Mall of America, on the road between U.S. Federal
Credit Union, and the train station parking garage. It was perched up on a
light post above the road, and I saw it fly down to the ground and back up
a couple of times. I wasn't 100% sure it was a jess, because I didn't have
my good binoculars with me, but whatever it was, it was long and thin, and
definitely attached to the hawk's leg. I watched it for a little while and
it seemed to be flying fine. Just thought I'd mention it, in case someone
was looking for their hawk. I called the Raptor Center, and they didn't
have any reports of a missing hawk.

[mou-net] Cowbirds

2009-08-11 Thread Andrew Longtin
So tonight I've been working on getting shots of the two Cowbird young, one
is being fed by a Chipping Sparrow, and one by a male Northern Cardinal.. So
that's three species in my yard that have been duped by them counting the
Baltimore Oriole that earlier in the month was feeding one..

I'm currently looking for my next career..

Please see http://www.linkedin.com/in/andrewlongtin

I welcome advice, suggestions, and an opportunity to network.. Thanks..

Subject: [mou-net] shorebird ID question

We stopped at the 180th St. marsh yesterday and there was just a single
shorebird. However, there is a question about what it actually is!
(several different opinions so far) We watched the bird for 5 to 10 minutes
and during that period it did not move at all other than once it turned its
head so it was alive;-)

Take a look at see what you think. If you click on the right hand photo on
the photostream, there is a tighter crop although it really doesn't show
much additional detail. I would be most interested to hear what others
think this bird might be.

Here's your chance to take part in a fun bit of citizen-science; this
upcoming weekend, Friday-Saturday-Sunday, August 7-9 is MN Audubon's
first annual Chimney Swift Count, with a follow-up to come in
September. It takes as little as an hour, on just one of those nights
of your choosing.

It's easy enough. Park yourself for the 30 minutes on either side of
sunset (8:37 as of last night, a few minutes earlier by the weekend),
with a clear view of any chimney or smokestack that's been seen to
have the little flying cigars entering or exiting, or an area where
the flock has been swirling to feed, if you have no other evidence.
When the birds bed down for the night, they drop straight down into
the chimney, and that's when to count. If you have partners, it helps
to spread out a bit, to get different perspectives on the chimney; you
can compare numbers and average afterwards, to report.

For more information you can contact our co-ordinator, Ron Windingstad
at rwindings...@audubon.org, or to download participation forms go to
http://mnaudubon.org/events/714.

If you want explanatory brochures to satisfy curious onlookers or
nervous neighbors, here's a link to a site with brochures you can
download and print:
https://mail.google.com/a/moosewoods.us/#inbox/122e0b5d9503d60c
Good luck, and have fun!

Turned on the camera this morning and there were 4 brand new baby
Eastern Bluebirds. They apparently hatched overnght. They all seem
healthy and are responding quickly to parents with food.
Her first egg was on 5/17, the fourth on 5/20, so they hatched in
exactly two weeks. These two birds wasted no time as the entire
process from their arrival at the box, nest building, laying, and
hatching
took place in about three weeks. Bob Dunlap speculated this may have
been a second nesting, I agree, as four eggs were less than we have
seen in the past also.

Had a Common Redpoll and a Ruby-throated Hummingbird at our feeders
yesterday and today. I wonder if those two species have ever met before.
They weren't here at exactly the same time so they technically have not met
yet but they were here within minutes of each other.

Hummingbird was our earliest date ever and obviously the redpoll each day
becomes the latest date ever. Does anybody else have redpolls in the
southern 2/3rds of the state? I know there are a few left in the northern
parts.

Observed at 3:30pm April 17 at the Lyon County Fairgrounds along the
Redwood River. This bird is the size, shape, and stature of a Northern
Goshawk, but this bird was very dark in general color both above and
below. I am not aware of color morphs in accipiters. Any guidance would
be appreciated.

Photos and written details are available at the following link.

[mou-net] Spring flight

2009-03-18 Thread Andrew Longtin
Well since I now have no job to go to, I spent a few hours in my driveway in
the sun watching the sky for migration..

From 12:30 to 16:00 I spotted:

4 Adult Bald Eagles

6 Immature Bald Eagles

1 Ghost (Adult Male Northern Harrier)

1 Sharp-shinned Hawk

1 Adult Red-tailed Hawk

2 Killdeer

One of the adult Bald Eagles flew past very low and scared up all the dicky
birds in the area, in the mass of Robins, Grackles and Starlings flying
around to avoid the Eagle I had about 50 to 60 Cedar Waxwings in the group.

[mou-net] Wilkin Co. / Stevens Co.

2009-02-08 Thread Andrew Longtin
Anyone looking for COMMOM REDPOLLS, SNOW BUNTINGS, and HORNED LARKS should
take a drive on County Road 26 from just south of the Rothsay SWMA ( just
north of Rothsay) over to SR 75 south, I had a few a hundred of each on that
drive.. On the way up there on County Road 52 just south of Lawndale I had a
ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK in a tree and a NORTHERN SHRIKE on the wires by the small
grain elevator..

On the west side of the Rothsay SWMA I had a SHARP-TAILED GROUSE fly over
the road and land in the field..

In Stevens County on the was side of the town of Donnelly on Cr. 18 just
before it splits and Cr. 9 goes south I had a NORTHERN GOSHAWK fly right
past me, I pulled over when I saw it coming and watched it for 5 minutes as
it flew right into town and saw if make a few dips as it looked like it was
stooping at something..

Heading south on Co. Rd. 9 out of Donnelly by junction 56 just north of Co.
Rd. 14 I believe I had a flock of SNOW BUNTINGS that conservatively numbered
about 500 to 600 birds!!! In this same spot I also saw about 50 - 60 deer
out in the field..

[mou] My Hawk Ridge shots.. Five Kite shots in there..

2008-09-11 Thread Andrew Longtin
All,

I have updated my Hawk Ridge shots for this season so far and
towards the bottom are the five Mississippi Kite shots I took of the Tuesday
9/9 sighting.. Better binocular/scope looks at the Monday 9/8 Kite but too
far and would have been shooting into the sun more that that one..

Does anyone know about the Falcon pair that is nesting on top of the
Wells Fargo / ATT building at 494 and Xerxes? Also was wondering if
anyone knows the Ornithologists at the U of M that bands the chicks
from these Falcon nests. Thanks Kathryn Young

[mou] Gibertson (PVC) Bluebird House

2006-03-19 Thread Andrew Longtin
Yes,
I have a pair in my yard, I have had a few BB fledge out of them but
those damn sparrows are still a hassle.. I do like them for looking in the
nest, I think by unhooking them at the top and peeking in there is less of a
chance for the babies to jump out on you..

Hello All,

I was wondering if anyone has had any experience using the Gilbertson (PVC)
bluebird house. I live in an area of Winona where bluebirds are common as
are house sparrows.

Thanks in advance.

Today while taking a break from PFW I went out to do some snow removal
around 11:00, while working I happen to hear a bird call, looked up to find
two gorgeous adult male dark morph Rough-legged Hawks kettling right over my

came out to watch them call and kettle for about 5 minutes as they flew off,
they were heading east south-east towards Hwy 55 and 101 N.

Subject: [mou] Hummingbird Question

I have a couple of questions regarding our resident Ruby-Throated HB's (male
and female) that I am hoping someone could educate my wife and me on
regarding a several issues?

1) Last night, my wife and I were eating dinner and watching the male HB.
Anyway, we just noticed a bright red patch under its throat. I have taken
quite a few close-up images and have not seen this before. Is the probably
another male, or is it a change in the one that has been hanging around the
most?

2) The last week or so it seems that the male has shifted to coming to the
feeder frequently, but not necessarily to drink. It flys around, and darts
back and forth. It seems like it is patroling? Is this territorial behavior?
We do have a female that shows up occaisionally and he does tend to chase
her off. But, she does come back when he is not around. Also, there is
another male that does come around but is quickly chased by our resident
one. However, the one getting chased off seems rather persistent and keeps
coming back.

3) I was at Wild Birds Unlimited last Sunday to give a talk on Digital
Photography. I happened to talk with a customer of the store who was telling
me that she had quite a few HB's at her feeder at one time (I thought she
said 10, but don't quote me on that). I was surprised based on what happens
at out feeder and from a talk we had heard from a HB expert at the Quarry
Hill Nature Center around February or March of this year.

I would be interested in some inputs on the above. Thank you in advance.

[mou] Ospreys nesting

Today coming back from lunch I noticed a pair of Osprey constructing a new
nest on one of the huge light poles in the 169 / Cross town (62)
intersection, I know it's on the east side if your driving north on 169, I
think it's on the north-east pole but it might be the south-east one, I know
they are very very tall as street lights go, they have the four huge lights
on them and a dome type cap on top, I don't know how well this nest will
last, it seems like a hard place to setup a nest because of the cap or dome
that's on the top of the four lights..

Six PINE SISKINS stopped briefly at our feeder on Saturday. First time in at
least eight years that we have seen them here. It seems that owls are not
the only boreal birds irrupting southward this winter. Nine squirrels of
three species (red, gray, fox) are outcompeting our juncos for ground
feeding space.

[mou] New Year's Birds

2004-01-01 Thread Andrew Longtin
Dave,
I got your Shrikes for you, I did a little drive this afternoon too,
found
4 Northern Shrikes, one about 1/2 mile from my house in Corcoran on
Horseshoe Trail Road, one in Wright County on CR. 119 by Pelican Lake, there
was a Kestrel hunting the grassy fields there also.

Didn't work as hard as you, only got 20 species..

Subject: [mou] New Year's Birds

Hi everyone!
I spent the day birding the county with Forest Strnad and Troy Flicek
completing the trifecta. We ended up with 32 species on the
day. Highlights were clearly waterfowl as we saw 2 female Wood Ducks, 1 male
Gadwall, 1 male American Black Duck, 2 female Northern
Pintails, and our ol' reliable Mute Swan. Not to mention many Mallards and
Canada Geese. Other interesting birds were 1 Rough-legged
Hawk, 1 Sharp-shinned Hawk, 1 Belted Kingfisher, and a couple of Red-headed
Woodpeckers.

Before going out, I had made a list of birds I had expected to see. We
missed out on American Kestrel, Wild Turkey, Northern
Flicker, Northern Shrike, and Snow Bunting. And believe it or not, we didn't
have a Pheasant or Starling until the very last minute!
We also tried again, in vain, for the Northern Saw-whet Owl which has been
seen off and on at River Bend Nature Center. That thing
must know when I'm coming!

Hope you all had good days also!

Excellent! Anyone got a longer chimney list?!

Quoting Donald Starkweather donst...@charter.net:

 To the helpful MOU members,

The owl in my son's fireplace is out of the house and probably back to
wherever he/she should be. Plastic sheeting and duct tape got him to fly
to
an open window, apparently with no harm. My son is going to have to do
something about the fireplace flue though. Several years ago it was a
mallard, and they are noisy and scary according to my daughter-in-law.

My question: If I had gone to see the owl, could I have counted him on my
 county list?

Announcement from Cornell LAb of Ornithology - in case some Minnesota
birders might be interested. This is bird science accessible to us all.

Jim Williams, Wayzata

BIRD WATCHERS NEEDED FOR PROJECT FEEDERWATCH

In the next few months large numbers of redpolls, crossbills, grosbeaks,
nuthatches and siskins are predicted to move south into the lower 48 states.
Will the predicted movements occur, and will these nomads of the bird world
visit your feeders this winter? You can help scientists learn more about
these species and other winter bird populations by joining more than 16,000
people from across the United States and Canada in counting birds for
Project FeederWatch.

If you are already a Project FeederWatch participant, thank you for
contributing to the success of the project! If you are not a FeederWatcher,
please read on Š

Last February, the data you collected for the Great Backyard Bird Count
(GBBC) provided scientists with a snapshot view of bird abundance and
distribution. Throughout last winter, Project FeederWatch was gathering
information to provide a more comprehensive view of backyard bird
populations. Like the GBBC, FeederWatch counts are submitted to scientists
who use the data to examine trends in bird populations. Participants count
the birds at their feeders as often as every week from November through
early April. Participants then submit counts either on paper forms or over
the Internet. We invite you to contribute to our understanding of winter
bird populations by joining your fellow bird watchers in Project
FeederWatch.

WHY IS FEEDERWATCH IMPORTANT? FeederWatch data provide a detailed picture of
weekly changes in the distribution and abundance of birds across the
continent. Long-term monitoring programs, such as FeederWatch, are important
for identifying changes in bird populations and for targeting research and
conservation efforts. FeederWatch data are currently being analyzed to gauge
the impact of West Nile virus on wild birds. Please help monitor the health
of winter bird populations by joining us in the 17th season of Project
FeederWatch. Learn more about the project at www.birds.cornell.edu/pfw,
where you can see maps, trend graphs, and other results generated from
FeederWatch data.

WHAT DO I RECEIVE FOR PARTICIPATING? FeederWatchers receive a Research Kit
that includes: * the FeederWatch Handbook, our guide to feeding birds; * a
full-color identification poster of common feeder birds (both Eastern and
Western, painted by renowned artist Larry McQueen); * a 14-month calendar
featuring photographs taken by FeederWatch participants last season; *
instructions on how to participate; and * paper data forms and/or access to
our online data entry system. In addition, participants receive a
subscription to the newsletter of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology (U.S.) or
Bird Studies Canada (Canada).

HOW DO I JOIN? There is a $15 annual participation fee ($12 for members of
the Lab of Ornithology, CAN$25 for Canadian participants) that covers your
materials and newsletter subscription, staff support, web site support, and
data analysis. If you are currently participating in FeederWatch, thank you!
Please do not renew your participation until we send you a renewal notice.

U.S. Residents: 1. Visit http://birds.cornell.edu/pfw and sign up over our
secure server. OR 2. Call (800) 843-2473 (BIRD) OR 3. Send a check made
payable to Project FeederWatch to: Project FeederWatch / GBBC P.O. Box 11
Ithaca, New York 14851-0011

Project FeederWatch is a joint research and education project of the Cornell
Lab of Ornithology, Bird Studies Canada, Audubon, and the Canadian Nature
Federation.

Can anyone tell me when the Duluth, Isabella, Two Harbors, Grand Marais, and
Sax-Zim CBCs are scheduled this year? Now that the official dates no longer
necessarily begin on a Saturday, some of the smaller CBCs may actually occur
before the Duluth one does. Thanks!!

There is symbolic as well as actual beauty in the migration of birds. There
is something infinitely healing in the repeated refrains of nature--the
assurance that dawn comes after night, and spring after the winter.

I am seeking some advice as to where to hang a hummingbird feeder. I have a
relative
large back yard adjacent to a wooded area. I have several feeders about that
attract
finches, chickadees, grossbeaks, cardinals, etc. My wife has two small gardens
but they
are in open areas. All feeders, except one, hang from trees and are pretty well
sheltered.
I am unsure where to hang the hummingbird feeder. Should it be near the
others? Should
it be in the open or sheltered? Should there be more than one? We do have
hummingbirds
about as they occasionally fly through the yard. Any advice one can give will
be greatly
appreciated Thanks.

2003-06-19 Thread Andrew Longtin
The other morning while out for my early morning walk I heard a loon calling
as it took off from water some where by my house, I figured they would all
be farther up north by now. I'm pretty sure it took off from Medina Lake and
flew up CR 116 right by my house, I could hear it calling as the sound
disappeared north of me, it was at about 05:30 in the morning on Tuesday or
Wednesday of this week..

I birded down to Freeborn and Mower counties and back this weekend, on Saturday
morning I
found my first lifer in Rice Co., a Sedge Wren in a field on the west side of
Union lake
by I35 and CR 19 by Northfield, found a ton of other birds in that stretch.

The second lifer was a pair of Black Terns on Everson Lake off of SR 13 in
Waseca Co. I
watched them fly around the lake a few times and they were landing on the east
side of the
lake, the lake is basically surrounded by cattails and one landed on the edge
of the
cattails and stayed there for awhile, I also saw one catch a small minnow and
then present
it to the other, they seemed like a mated / mating pair and they might have a
nest there..

Went for a drive around Wright Co. today, came up with 70 species and one new
lifer for
me, a Northern Waterthrush.

I found the Waterthrush on CR 115 just west off of Hwy 55 where the Crow River
runs next
to the road.

Found Loons on Pleasant Lake and Clearwater Lake in Annandale.

Found a group of Palm Warblers by Delano off CR 14 south of Hwy 12, I also
found A Brown
Thrasher and a Harris's Sparrow there too.

Saw 4 Sandhill Cranes take off from the Woodland hunting area by Montrose.

On the north end of Fountain Lake I found some Lark Sparrows, and had a
Woodcock take off.

Found a good spot for waterfowl and shorebirds, on the west side of CR 5. by
Willima Lake,
B-1 on the DeLorme map, there were many ducks and other birds in a flooded
area, a bunch
of Greater Yellowlegs.

Mergansers
showing off for the ladies, along with the regulars like Mallards and C Geese.
