It was perched up on a light post above the road, and I saw it fly down to the ground and back up a couple of times. I wasn't 100% sure it was a jess, because I didn't have my good binoculars with me, but whatever it was, it was long and thin, and definitely attached to the hawk's leg. I watched it for a little while and it seemed to be flying fine. Just thought I'd mention it, in case someone was looking for their hawk. It takes as little as an hour, on just one of those nights of your choosing. It's easy enough. Park yourself for the 30 minutes on either side of sunset (8:37 as of last night, a few minutes earlier by the weekend), with a clear view of any chimney or smokestack that's been seen to have the little flying cigars entering or exiting, or an area where the flock has been swirling to feed, if you have no other evidence. When the birds bed down for the night, they drop straight down into the chimney, and that's when to count. If you have partners, it helps to spread out a bit, to get different perspectives on the chimney; you can compare numbers and average afterwards, to report. For more information you can contact our co-ordinator, Ron Windingstad at rwindings...@audubon.org, or to download participation forms go to http://mnaudubon.org/events/714. If you want explanatory brochures to satisfy curious onlookers or nervous neighbors, here's a link to a site with brochures you can download and print: https://mail.google.com/a/moosewoods.us/#inbox/122e0b5d9503d60c Good luck, and have fun! Well since I now have no job to go to, I spent a few hours in my driveway in the sun watching the sky for migration.. [mou-net] Wilkin Co. / Stevens Co.
Anyone looking for COMMOM REDPOLLS, SNOW BUNTINGS, and HORNED LARKS should take a drive on County Road 26 from just south of the Rothsay SWMA ( just north of Rothsay) over to SR 75 south, I had a few a hundred of each on that drive.. On the way up there on County Road 52 just south of Lawndale I had a ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK in a tree and a NORTHERN SHRIKE on the wires by the small grain elevator.. On the west side of the Rothsay SWMA I had a SHARP-TAILED GROUSE fly over the road and land in the field.. In Stevens County on the was side of the town of Donnelly on Cr. 18 just before it splits and Cr. 9 goes south I had a NORTHERN GOSHAWK fly right past me, I pulled over when I saw it coming and watched it for 5 minutes as it flew right into town and saw if make a few dips as it looked like it was stooping at something.. Heading south on Co. Rd. 9 out of Donnelly by junction 56 just north of Co. Rd. 14 I believe I had a flock of SNOW BUNTINGS that conservatively numbered about 500 to 600 birds!!! Anyway, we just noticed a bright red patch under its throat. I have taken quite a few close-up images and have not seen this before. Is the probably another male, or is it a change in the one that has been hanging around the most? 2) The last week or so it seems that the male has shifted to coming to the feeder frequently, but not necessarily to drink. It flys around, and darts back and forth. It seems like it is patroling? Is this territorial behavior? We do have a female that shows up occaisionally and he does tend to chase her off. But, she does come back when he is not around. Also, there is another male that does come around but is quickly chased by our resident one. However, the one getting chased off seems rather persistent and keeps coming back. 3) I was at Wild Birds Unlimited last Sunday to give a talk on Digital Photography. I happened to talk with a customer of the store who was telling me that she had quite a few HB's at her feeder at one time (I thought she said 10, but don't quote me on that). I was surprised based on what happens at out feeder and from a talk we had heard from a HB expert at the Quarry Hill Nature Center around February or March of this year. I would be interested in some inputs on the above. Thank you in advance. [mou] New Year's Birds
Dave, I got your Shrikes for you, I did a little drive this afternoon too, found 4 Northern Shrikes, one about 1/2 mile from my house in Corcoran on Horseshoe Trail Road, one in Wright County on CR. 119 by Pelican Lake, there was a Kestrel hunting the grassy fields there also. Didn't work as hard as you, only got 20 species.. I spent the day birding the county with Forest Strnad and Troy Flicek completing the trifecta. We ended up with 32 species on the day. Highlights were clearly waterfowl as we saw 2 female Wood Ducks, 1 male Gadwall, 1 male American Black Duck, 2 female Northern Pintails, and our ol' reliable Mute Swan. Not to mention many Mallards and Canada Geese. Other interesting birds were 1 Rough-legged Hawk, 1 Sharp-shinned Hawk, 1 Belted Kingfisher, and a couple of Red-headed Woodpeckers. Before going out, I had made a list of birds I had expected to see. We missed out on American Kestrel, Wild Turkey, Northern Flicker, Northern Shrike, and Snow Bunting. And believe it or not, we didn't have a Pheasant or Starling until the very last minute! We also tried again, in vain, for the Northern Saw-whet Owl which has been seen off and on at River Bend Nature Center. That thing must know when I'm coming! Hope you all had good days also! [mou] good backyard birding project
Been doing it for longer than I been in MOU.. I have the last 5 years of my data on my WEB pages.. http://home.att.net/~alongtin/Bird_Pictures/andrews_birding_pages_index.htm Andrew -Original Message- From: mou-net-ad...@cbs.umn.edu [mailto:mou-net-ad...@cbs.umn.edu]on Behalf Of Jim Williams Sent: Thursday, October 30, 2003 2:29 PM To: MOU-net Subject: [mou] good backyard birding project Announcement from Cornell LAb of Ornithology - in case some Minnesota birders might be interested. This is bird science accessible to us all. Jim Williams, Wayzata BIRD WATCHERS NEEDED FOR PROJECT FEEDERWATCH In the next few months large numbers of redpolls, crossbills, grosbeaks, nuthatches and siskins are predicted to move south into the lower 48 states. Will the predicted movements occur, and will these nomads of the bird world visit your feeders this winter? You can help scientists learn more about these species and other winter bird populations by joining more than 16,000 people from across the United States and Canada in counting birds for Project FeederWatch. If you are already a Project FeederWatch participant, thank you for contributing to the success of the project! If you are not a FeederWatcher, please read on Last February, the data you collected for the Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) provided scientists with a snapshot view of bird abundance and distribution. Throughout last winter, Project FeederWatch was gathering information to provide a more comprehensive view of backyard bird populations. Like the GBBC, FeederWatch counts are submitted to scientists who use the data to examine trends in bird populations. Participants count the birds at their feeders as often as every week from November through early April. Participants then submit counts either on paper forms or over the Internet. We invite you to contribute to our understanding of winter bird populations by joining your fellow bird watchers in Project FeederWatch. WHY IS FEEDERWATCH IMPORTANT? FeederWatch data provide a detailed picture of weekly changes in the distribution and abundance of birds across the continent. Long-term monitoring programs, such as FeederWatch, are important for identifying changes in bird populations and for targeting research and conservation efforts. FeederWatch data are currently being analyzed to gauge the impact of West Nile virus on wild birds. Please help monitor the health of winter bird populations by joining us in the 17th season of Project FeederWatch. Learn more about the project at www.birds.cornell.edu/pfw, where you can see maps, trend graphs, and other results generated from FeederWatch data. WHAT DO I RECEIVE FOR PARTICIPATING? FeederWatchers receive a Research Kit that includes: * the FeederWatch Handbook, our guide to feeding birds; * a full-color identification poster of common feeder birds (both Eastern and Western, painted by renowned artist Larry McQueen); * a 14-month calendar featuring photographs taken by FeederWatch participants last season; * instructions on how to participate; and * paper data forms and/or access to our online data entry system. In addition, participants receive a subscription to the newsletter of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology (U.S.) or Bird Studies Canada (Canada). HOW DO I JOIN? There is a $15 annual participation fee ($12 for members of the Lab of Ornithology, CAN$25 for Canadian participants) that covers your materials and newsletter subscription, staff support, web site support, and data analysis. If you are currently participating in FeederWatch, thank you! Please do not renew your participation until we send you a renewal notice. U.S. Residents: 1. Visit http://birds.cornell.edu/pfw and sign up over our secure server. OR 2. Call (800) 843-2473 (BIRD) OR 3. Send a check made payable to Project FeederWatch to: Project FeederWatch / GBBC P.O. I found the Waterthrush on CR 115 just west off of Hwy 55 where the Crow River runs next to the road. Found Loons on Pleasant Lake and Clearwater Lake in Annandale. Found a group of Palm Warblers by Delano off CR 14 south of Hwy 12, I also found A Brown Thrasher and a Harris's Sparrow there too. Saw 4 Sandhill Cranes take off from the Woodland hunting area by Montrose. On the north end of Fountain Lake I found some Lark Sparrows, and had a Woodcock take off. Found a good spot for waterfowl and shorebirds, on the west side of CR 5. by Willima Lake, B-1 on the DeLorme map, there were many ducks and other birds in a flooded area, a bunch of Greater Yellowlegs.
