[mou-net] Rufous Hummingbird

2016-10-12 Thread Earl Orf
I did see the probable Rufous Hummingbird this morning from about 10:15 to
10:45. I got some photos but the bird did not spread its tail feathers
while I was there. If we have someone who can tell Allen's from Rufous
using some other field marks, I'd be happy to share the photos.

I also stopped at the visitor center and watched the feeders for about a
half hour. There were lots of Black-capped Chickadees and Redpolls. Also a
few Nuthatches, Woodpeckers and Juncos but no Grosbeaks.

Other notable sightings in the bog today:
Sandhill Cranes (2 along 133 between Hwy 7 and Meadowlands)
Northern Harrier
Kestrel
Hooded Mergansers
Northern Shrike
Pileated Woodpecker
(Black-billed Magpie (2 at the intersection of Admiral Road and Zim Road)

2013-11-07 Thread Earl Orf
The discovery of the Lewis's Woodpecker here in Minnesota prompted me to
pass on this woodpecker trivia question. I was recently on a trip to Oregon
and California and, while I was there, I subscribed to several local bird
lists. Oregon recently had a first state sighting of a Red-bellied
Woodpecker. That gave rise to the following posts about which states have
the most woodpecker sightings.

Here's a hint if you're trying to guess the leading woodpecker state.
California would need to find an American Three-toed Woodpecker to catch the
leader. Oregon, which has that species, would need a Gila Woodpecker and a
Gilded Flicker.

Greetings, birders,
I'm excited to share some news regarding Oregon woodpeckers. With the
recently confirmed RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER in NE Oregon (which is sure to be
accepted by the state records committee), Oregon is now tied for 3rd place
among all North American states and provinces for its master list of
woodpeckers. Here are the current standings:

4th place, with 15 species: Arizona, Oklahoma

3rd place, with 16 species: Oregon, Texas
2nd place, with 17 species: California

Anyone care to guess which state or province holds the title of most
woodpeckers--with a whopping 19 species?!
No fair scouring the state/provincial bird lists; keep it fun and just
guess!

Email me your answers directly and I'll share your responses in a couple

to obol, COBOL
  https://mail.google.com/mail/images/cleardot.gif
All,
Thanks for the enthusiastic responses to the quiz on state/provincial
woodpecker rankings!
Here is a summary of your responses:
AB 1 (14 spp)
AK 1 (9 spp, but the only state with Great-spotted)

AR 1 (10 spp)
BC 2 (14 spp)
CO 2 (12 spp)
FL 1 (10 spp)
HI 1 (No, Gates, there are no woodpeckers in Hawaii. However, there were
ALMOST woodpeckers in Hawaii...see below)
KS 1 (12 spp)

NM 5 (14 spp)
NV 4 (see below)
RI 1 (lowest of all states and provinces with 6 spp)
(some of you guessed AZ and TX, but I already gave you their rankings in the
original post)

And, the answer is NEVADA!
Nevada is only missing 4 Nor Am woodpecker species (not counting
Great-spotted): Golden-fronted, Red-cockaded, Arizona, and Ivory-billed.
And, only 4 of Nevada's woodpecker species are considered review species,
giving the state 15 regularly occurring woodpeckers.

Jim Kopitzke, Alan Contreras, Rob Conway, and Joel Geier all got this
correct.

New Mexico is a good guess, especially since the state ranks 4th for all
birds on its list (just above Oregon, which rests comfortably in 5th place,
with CA, TX, and AZ in spots 1-3).

Here are the top states and provinces:

19 - Nevada
17 - California
16 - TX and OR
15 - AZ and OK
14 - AB, BC, ID, NM, WY
13 - MT, NE, UT, WA

NOTE: It is possible that some of these have been bumped up a notch in the
last few years, as I have not had time to check the very latest official
state lists, except for the states at 15 and up.

Regarding woodpeckers in Hawaii, the following note was published in the
November 1901 edition of The Condor:

The Commissioner of Agriculture and Forestry of the Territory of Hawaii is
desirous of securing a supply of live woodpeckers and writes Mr. W. Otto
Emerson as follows:
'I am desirous of obtaining a number of the downy woodpeckers to be
introduced here on the different islands. Will you kindly let me know where
I can obtain say 100 or 200 and
the probable cost?' Those who can assist in the matter are urged to
communicate with W. Otto Emerson, Haywards, Cal.
Apparently, this never happened.

Happy Holidays and Abundant Woodpeckers to All!

[mou-net] Blue Grosbeak

2011-07-12 Thread Earl Orf
I saw the male Blue Grosbeak this morning at 140th Street. Very good
directions were given in previous posts.

I waited about 45 minutes but he finally showed up about 8:15. He then
perched on wires and the small cedar trees and sang his heart out. He also
flew into the wheat field on the south side of the road.

Also present were several very vocal Dickcissels, a couple of Eastern
Kingbirds defending their territory, and many sparrows. Clay-colored
Sparrows were the most numerous, with a few Chipping Sparrows also seen.

While I don't want to steal another birder's thunder, I wanted to get this
sighting up ASAP. I was just on a trail in Roseville when another birder
told me he heard a Hooded Warbler singing in Reservoir Woods. I relocated
the bird easily (11:45 am) apparently much closer to the entrance of the
trail than when the other birder heard it.
Directions:
The bird is singing very close to the Western end of Reservoir Woods trail.
The entrance is on Victoria Street south of County Road B north of
Larpenteur, on the East side of Victoria (North of the 90 degree bend at a
Cemetary and there is parking for about 3-4 cars on the side of the road if
that School Bus moves.) The bird was singing just off the trail was
visible when it flew into a bare tree.
MANY THANKS to the birder that directed me to the bird. Hope you don't mind
that I posted this.

[mou-net] Migrants seen in Grand Marais Harbor and Gunflint Trail today

2009-05-03 Thread Earl Orf
On a trip up the Gunflint Trail this morning I heard and saw Winter Wrens at
several stops. Along the Lima Mountain Road I found a Boreal Chickadee and
Ruby-crowned Kinglet. As I drove along one of the gravel roads that lead
off the Gunflint, I came across a Woodcock right in the middle of the road
by a mud puddle. I stopped and watched as it ever so slowly moved toward
the side of the road. I guess it thought I wouldn't notice if it crept
along at a snail's pace.

[mou-net] Itasca Bird Club field trip

2009-04-18 Thread Earl Orf
The Itasca Bird Club held a field trip this morning and we visited two
locations that are not generally open to the public.

At the Mallard Club rice paddies (just west of Deer River) we had lots of
action. We saw at least a dozen Trumpeter Swans, 2 Sandhill Cranes, 2
Wilson's snipe, a large flock of Lapland Longspurs, and a Northern Harrier.

Duck species included:

Blue-winged Teal

Green-winged Teal

Lesser Scaup

Wood Duck

Ring-necked duck

Bufflehead

Redhead

American Wigeon

Pintail

Mallard

Hooded Merganser

Common Merganser

We also saw three Grebe Species (Pied-billed, Horned, and Red-necked), and
three Sparrow species (Song, American Tree, and Savannah).

Our next stop was at the Minnesota Power and Light holding ponds. Action
here was much slower. We saw some of the same species that we saw at the
rice paddies but we did manage to add Common Loon, Common Goldeneye, Bald
Eagle, Ruffed Grouse, and Gadwall. We also saw a soaring flock of White
Pelicans numbering between 60 and 100.

I drove up the Gunflint Trail today and found two Northern Hawk Owls. The
first one was 23 miles north of Grand Marais. It was just south of the road

Gray Jays, and a small flock of White-winged Crossbills.

The second Hawk Owl was 37.5 miles north of Grand Marais. I only had a short
look at it before it flew off.

White-winged Crossbills and Snow Buntings were seen at many places along the
Gunflint and Lima Mountain Road. I found two Hooded Mergansers and two
Bufflehead on a small pond. Many of the small ponds were frozen over today.

I saw Pine Grosbeaks again today. One American Pipit was found on FR 325.

One Black Scoter was still present in the Grand Marais harbor.

[mou] Dunlin and Red-headed Woodpecker in Itasca County

2008-05-29 Thread Earl Orf
The parade of shorebirds continues here in Itasca County. Normally, we have
a hard time finding shorebirds here but this year our flooded field on CR
10 continues to produce surprises. It has mostly dried up but I was there
this morning about 7:30 and found a Dunlin among the 15 Semi-palmated
Plovers. This is a new Itasca County bird for me. Directions are: Itasca

When I arrived home I had another surprise. We have a Red-headed Woodpecker

[mou] Yellow Rail in Itasca County

2008-05-15 Thread Earl Orf
Tonight (Wed 5-14) I finally found a Yellow Rail in Itasca County. I heard
it calling three times; the third time was close and very clear.

I was at a pull off on the south side of Hwy 2, 5.6 miles east of Hwy 65.
This pull off was constructed a couple of years ago and it might actually be
a boat launch. However, it does get you off the highway and is right along
an extensive cattail marsh. One disadvantage of this site is that Hwy 2 is
quite busy and you can hear the traffic noise for a long distance. That
makes it difficult to get a very long period of time that is quiet enough to
hear the rails.

I also heard several American Bitterns and several Soras calling. I was
also surprised to hear a couple of Sandhill Cranes calling from out in the
marsh.

[mou] Marbled and Hudsonian Godwits in Itasca County

2008-05-15 Thread Earl Orf
This afternoon, about 2:00 PM, I found a Marbled Godwit and a Hudsonian
Godwit in a flooded field in Itasca County. According to Bob Janssen's
county lists on the MOU web site neither of these birds has been reported in
Itasca County before. There were also two Short-billed Dowitchers in this
same area.

This field is located on CR 10, between 4 and 5 miles south of Hwy 169 (they
intersect in the town of Bovey). The field is just south of the Trout Lake
Community Center. This year the field is heavily flooded and is proving to
be a good shorebird spot (shorebird spots are hard to find in Itasca
County).

This evening Shawn Conrad and I went back there and this time there were
also 2 Semi-palmated Plovers, at least 4 Least Sandpipers, and one Solitary
Sandpiper. As a bonus, we saw a flock of 9 White Pelicans fly over.

[mou] Willet in Itasca County

2008-05-01 Thread Earl Orf
This morning I saw a Willet in a flooded field on Itasca CR 10. This field
is located just south of the Trout Lake Community Center. Shorebirds are
scarce here and this is only the second Willet that I have seen in Itasca
County. I heard a Snipe while I was there.

I also saw 35 Bonaparte's Gulls at the Trout Lake public access in Bovey.

[mou] Field Sparrow in Itasca County

This morning I am seeing a Field Sparrow under our feeders. According to
the MOU web site this is a rare bird in Itasca County. My only other record
for Field Sparrow in Itasca County is from 10-13-2002.

[mou] Loons in Ramsey County

2008-04-15 Thread Earl Orf
As many people have already mentioned, open water is drawing concentrations
of waterfowl in the Twin Cities area. I stopped at a small lake in the town
of White Bear Lake today. I think the name of it is Goose Lake. Just south
of downtown White Bear Lake there are small lakes on both sides of Hwy 61.
I know that the one on the east side is Goose Lake and I think the one on
the west side is connected and is also considered to be Goose Lake. The one
on the west side was open today and held 60 Common Loons. It also had the
following:

Ring-necked Duck (at least 100)

Great Egret (1)

Coot (about 50)

Ruddy Duck (1)

Redhead (3)

Red-breasted Merganser (about 10 pair)

Pied-billed Grebe (10)

American Wigeon (one pair)

Lesser Scaup (5)

I wouldn't have thought that this little lake was even big enough for a loon
to take off from.

[mou] Harlequin Duck at Prescott

2008-03-11 Thread Earl Orf
I saw the Harlequin Duck this morning at Prescott at about 10:00 AM. It was
sitting on the Minnesota shore between the railroad bridge and the Hwy 10

Hwy 10 bridge.

I also went to Reed's Landing but was unable to locate the Barrow's
Goldeneye.

[mou] Power of digiscoping

2007-11-27 Thread Earl Orf
This is not about a bird sighting but it is so amazing I had to pass it on.

I know that many of you have tried digiscoping. That's how I started out as
well. I mostly use my DSLR now but I still stay subscribed to the
digiscoping list serve. The following message came through and shows the
amazing possibilities of digiscoping.

**

Many of us enjoy sharing our digi-scoped photos with friends, but I suspect
that few of them realize the awesome magnification that can be achieved.
Swarovski Optik sponsors an annual contest, where they ask the participants
to include a shot of the scene taken before mounting the scope to the
camera. I decided to do that yesterday when viewing a male Peregrine Falcon
at the Point Reyes National Seashore Lighthouse viewpoint. Bird was about
200 feet + distant and well down the rock outcrop. Scenic photo taken with
the 8400 at full zoom (21.6mm). Digi-scope shot also at 21.6mm, and the
photo was cropped about 50%. Of further interest, the height of the bird in
the original scenic shot is 19 pixels, or less than 1%.

Cheers, Len Blumin, Mill Valley, CA

[mou] Short-eared Owl-Itasca County

2007-11-25 Thread Earl Orf
This evening, as we were driving back to the Twin Cities, my wife and I saw
a Short-eared Owl near the intersection of Itasca CR 10 and Hwy 2. This is
where the town of Warba is located.

The owl was hunting and flying low over the tall grassy areas by the
railroad tracks and by the Warba sewage pond. The time was 4:30 in the
afternoon.

I don't see Short-eared Owl on the MOU Itasca County checklist. Does that
make this bird is a first county record?

[mou] Black-backed Woodpeckers, Boreal Chickadees-Scenic SP

2007-08-24 Thread Earl Orf
I walked the fire tower trail at Scenic State Park this morning. I found a
pair of Black-backed Woodpeckers about 100-150 yds past the point where the
trail splits. This was on the part that leads to the fire tower.

Before you get to the place where the woodpeckers are you will find a spruce
bog. That's where I saw the Boreal Chickadee.

I also saw the following:

Ovenbird (several)

Canada Warbler

Blackpoll Warbler

Black White Warbler

Black-throated Green Warbler

Winter Wren

Brown Creeper (2)

Subject: [mou] Snowy Egret, Carver County

Around 10:00 this morning I found an adult Snowy Egret at Chaska Lake
in eastern Carver County. From Hwy. 41 in downtown Chaska, go west on
1st Street to the Chaska ballfields. Park in the parking lot and take
the main trail south which runs along the eastern side of the lake. In
about two hundred yards the woods will open up and you will be able to
view most of the lake looking west. The Snowy Egret was actively
feeding on the close shore from here. It was still present when I left
around 10:45.

Also on the lake was a flock of about 45 White-rumped Sandpipers.
These birds could only be viewed with a scope, as they were feeding on
the far western shore. Water levels at Chaska Lake are continuing to
drop, and it looks like this will be good shorebird habitat throughout
the summer and fall as long as water levels stay low. A scope is
absolutely necessary though.

There was also a Yellow-billed Cuckoo calling loudly that could be
easily heard from the lake viewing spot.

Bob Dunlap, back in Carver County for the summer

[mou] Willets in Itasca County

2007-05-05 Thread Earl Orf
Shorebirds are very hard to find in Itasca County because we just don't have
the right habitat. So, I was pleasantly surprised to find two Willets at
the Trout Lake boat landing in the town of Coleraine yesterday. They were
resting on a rock point near some Ring-billed Gulls. When they flew up,
circled around and landed again in the same spot I saw the diagnostic black
and white wing pattern of the Willet.

I also saw a Solitary Sandpiper in a small pond near our driveway. We live
near Highway 169 and CR 7 (also called the Scenic Highway).

Steve Millard joined me as we looked for Short-eared Owls at Rothsay last
evening. We didn't do as well as John Ellis did last week but we did see
several Owls. We also saw at least 5 Northern Harriers hunting and
interacting. We also saw a flock of about 20 Redpolls.

However, on my way back to Bovey today, I saw a Eurasian Collared-Dove in
Pelican Rapids. It was on a power line at the far western edge of town on
CR 30 right across from Soberg Construction Co. This was at about 2:00 PM.

[mou] Ruddy Turnstone-Grand Marais

For several years we have used a video camera (actually more of a =
security
camera) at our home in northern Minnesota to watch the progress of the
Phoebe nests that are built on the side of our house. This year the =
camera
died so I am asking if anyone has a lead on where to purchase a =
replacement.
Here are the features that the old one had and that I would like to get =
in
the replacement camera.

=20

- Color and video

- Can be viewed on a TV set (we run a cable from the camera to =
the
TV set)

- Doesn't need recording capability, we only use it for =
watching
the nest

- Doesn't need a constant source of electrical power. This is
important for us because our home is off the electrical grid. We =
produce
our own electricity with solar panels and a wind turbine. To conserve
energy we need to avoid electrical appliances that draw power when they =
are
not being used.

=20

I have already checked with Radio Shack and Best Buy and they don't have
anything that fits the bill. If anyone knows of a source for something =
like
this I would appreciate hearing about it.

Thanks,

[mou] Dakota County Gyrfalcon

I saw the Gyrfalcon this morning about 10:30. It wasn't along Hwy 55 so I
drove along CR 42 and turned north on Idell Ave. (the road that leads to
Shaar's Bluff Park). When I got to the point where Idell takes a 90 degree
turn to the west, I stopped to look over a large flock of Canada Geese. As
I was scanning them I found the Gyrfalcon sitting in a large tree about 200
yards to the west. It then flew to another tree straight north of me along
a path that is designated for the model airplane area.

It's a life bird for me and my 300th state bird.

I finally took the time last week to get my best photos of the summer on my
web site. I added a gallery called New Photos. My intention is to put new
photos there as I get them and leave each photo in this gallery for about a
month. That way if you have been to my web site before you can just go to
this gallery and see what is new.

Go to www.earlorfphotos.com http://www.earlorfphotos.com/ to see Artic
Terns, Warblers (including Kirtland's), hummers, baby animals and more.

Yesterday Shawn Conrad and I saw the Peregrine Falcon that has been making
regular appearances in Bovey. It is vary interesting to see deep rust
colored feathers where a Peregrine would normally have white feathers. We
are speculating that it has a nest back in the mine pit northeast of Bovey.
We have seen the rust coloring on other birds in our area and suspect that
it comes from dust bathing in the mine pit.

Shawn had to go fight a forest fire so I continued by myself up to Scenic
State Park. I walked the fire tower trail and found a male Black-backed
Woodpecker and a Boreal Chickadee.

Greetings, Shorebirders!

We are pleased to announce the formation of a new Listserve, hosted by =
the
University of Georgia, that also hosts Georgia Birds, and Pelagics-SE.

Shorebirds (or Waders, if you prefer) are a unique and fascinating group =
of
birds, because of their wide ranges throughout the world, and some of =
the
most impressive migrations of all birds, flying from the Arctic tundra =
all
the way to southern South America, Africa and Australia and back again, =
with
vagrant species turning up in many unexpected locations. They can be
confoundingly difficult to identify, with many similar species and
overlapping characteristics. And due to habitat loss of wetlands in
breeding, migration stopover and wintering grounds, many species are =
facing
severe ecological pressures and population losses. The focus of this
listserve is to create a worldwide forum for reporting the observation =
of
seasonal migration in differing areas, discovery of rarities, discussion =
of
identification problems, and for promotion of knowledge of conservation
issues concerning shorebirds.

As with other lists, please keep posts on the topic of shorebirds. Off
topic posts, such as general political comments, religion, flaming, etc, =
are
not allowed. Commercial topics are not encouraged, unless they are
announcements concerning upcoming events that feature Shorebirds. =
Please
use discretion as you would with other lists.

To Subscribe, send an email to the following link:

lists...@listserv.uga.eduabout:blank

type in the body of the message:

subscribe SHOREBIRDS FIRSTNAME LASTNAME

(for example: subscribe SHOREBIRDS ROBERT WALLACE)

Please leave the Subject line of the email blank

Frequently asked questions will be answered in a following email.
Attachments (such as photos) are not currently possible. Links to =
photos
for discussion should be posted in the email, and we hope to be able to =
set
up a site to download photos to.

We look forward to reading of sightings and shorebird movements from all
over the world, and learning more about these fascinating birds. Thank =
you
to Steve Holzman of FWS and Sara Schweitzer of UGA for their efforts to =
set
up this service.

Best regards and good birding!

I got this link from the Florida bird listserve. It's an interview on the
NPR program Fresh Air. Terry Gross is interviewing Donald Kroodsma and Don
Stap. They are talking about variations in bird songs and there is some
discussion about how birds learn their songs.

Today at about noon, my wife and I saw two Great Gray Owls in Carlton County
on our way back to the Twin Cities. They were both on Hwy 73. The first
was just north of Cromwell. (N 46.44.434 W 92.52.995). We saw this one
swoop down, catch something, and eat it. The second one was a couple of
miles south of Cromwell (N 46.38.196 W 92.53.600). This one was in a tree
next to an abandoned building.

At about 7:00 this morning we saw a Timber Wolf out on our lake at our home
between Grand Rapids and Hibbing.

[mou] Radar showing migration

2005-02-25 Thread Earl Orf
My wife and I are in Florida so I have joined the Florida bird list. =
This
message describes a really interesting web site. It shows radar =
depiction
of bird migration from Cuba. When you go to the site that is listed you
will need to choose Feb 25 as the date.

I have also been following the Minnesota lists. We will be back in =
about a
week and it sounds like there will still be some owls around.

Tonight has brought the first signs of nocturnal migration from Cuba
that is visible on NEXRAD radar. At this time (approx. 1 am EST)
they are passing over the Keys.

To view this phenomena go to...

In the drop-down box for end-time start at 0100 UTC, and then
click on the Key West indicator on the map (BYX). Repeat this step,

approach Florida...

[mou] Black-backed Woodpeckers on North Shore trip

--=_NextPart_000_0001_01C4A357.C66904B0

Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit

My wife and I just returned from a week on the North Shore. Sorry for the
late posting but I had no internet access during the time we were there.

On Monday 9/20 I found a pair (male and female) of Black-backed Woodpeckers
where the South Brule River crosses the Gunflint Trail. This is about 15
miles north of Grand Marais. I was in the parking lot at that spot and
played a CD and they came right to the area.

I also saw Cackling Geese at three locations. The first was a single goose
at Tofte Park on Tues 9/21. Then I saw one with two Canada Geese at
Fenstad's Resort where we were staying. It was there both 9/21 and 9/22.
This gave me a great ID comparison as the 3 geese were together most of the
time. The Cackling Goose was also swimming with some mallards and it was
very interesting to see that it was just slightly bigger than the mallards.
The last one was seen in the bay at Sugarloaf SNA. This is a very nice
birding area, by the way.

At the Department of Transportation ponds in Illgen City I saw an American
Pipit and an Am Golden Plover on 9/19 and a Semipalmated Sandpiper today
(9/25).

I also saw one American Pipit at the Beaver Bay Sewage Ponds on 9/19 and 6
Pipits at the Silver Bay Airport on 9/19.

Today Shawn Conrad and I headed up to Koochiching County so he could see =
the
Three-toed Woodpecker and we hit the jackpot! We drove south on CR13 =
from
CR 1. Not only did we see the male that has been previously reported =
2.3
miles south of CR 1 but we also saw a male and female at 9.2 miles south =
of
CR 1 and another pair 9.5 miles south of CR 1. In addition to that, we =
also
saw a male Black-backed Woodpecker 11.1 miles south of CR 1 on CR 13. =
Six
rare woodpeckers in one day - we consider ourselves very fortunate =
indeed.

=20

Also along CR 13 we saw several flocks of Boreal Chickadees (more than =
the
number of Black-capped Chickadees, how often does that happen). =20

=20

Other Koochiching sightings of note:

=20

Olive-sided Flycatcher (on Hwy 65 just south of Little Fork)

17 Black-billed Magpies south of Big Falls at the intersection of CR 67 =
and
Hwy 71. This is the same place Conny Brunell reported seeing them.

=20

We also stopped at the Big Falls sewage ponds but only saw 1 Least
Sandpiper, 2 Lesser Yellowlegs, and 4 Solitary Sandpipers.

We have been noticing the same thing. For the last several days we have
seen only one male hummer and none have been coming to our feeders. In
other years and about a week ago we have seen at least 6-8 hummers at our
feeders. We are located in Itasca County, halfway between Grand Rapids and
Hibbing.

Subject: [mnbird] Where are the hummingbirds?

Has anyone else noted a lack of hummingbirds at their feeders this summer?
We had good numbers at the start of the season, but we only have one or two
still visiting. Normally in July we have 10-20 birds visiting our 7
feeders. Has the unseasonably cold weather resulted in mortality, or has
there been widespread nest failure and early migration. Are birders in
Southern MN noticing an unusually early influx of southbound migrants?

Shawn Conrad and I used the DNR Palo Sharp-tailed Grouse blind this =
morning.
We saw 6 or 8 Sharp-tails but they were pretty far away and mostly =
stayed
behind some vegetation so we didn't have very good looks at the dancing. =

blind.

We then went to Sax Zim to see what we could find. The highlight there =

a very cooperative Great Gray Owl. It was sitting on a short stump =

[mou] Bonaparte's Gulls in Non-breeding plumage

The very last birds I saw during my Itasca County big day on Friday
5/23/03 were 4 Bonaparte's Gulls at Trout Lake in Bovey. That isn't too
newsworthy but the fact that they were in non-breeding plumage seemed
very odd to me. My wife and I saw about 20 of them in the same place a
couple of days ago but they were all in breeding plumage (black heads).
The 4 that I saw on Friday looked like the ones we see in Florida in
January! According to Sibley, non-breeding plumage lasts from August to
April.

Does anyone have an explanation for this?

Earl Orf
