[mou-net] Rufous Hummingbird
I did see the probable Rufous Hummingbird this morning from about 10:15 to 10:45. I got some photos but the bird did not spread its tail feathers while I was there. If we have someone who can tell Allen's from Rufous using some other field marks, I'd be happy to share the photos. There were lots of Black-capped Chickadees and Redpolls. Also a few Nuthatches, Woodpeckers and Juncos but no Grosbeaks. Other notable sightings in the bog today: Sandhill Cranes (2 along 133 between Hwy 7 and Meadowlands) Northern Harrier Kestrel Hooded Mergansers Northern Shrike Pileated Woodpecker (Black-billed Magpie (2 at the intersection of Admiral Road and Zim Road) Earl Orf <http://www.earlorfphotos.com/> www.earlorfphotos.com http://www.etsy.com/shop/EarlOrfPhotos Join or Leave mou-net: http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=mou-net Archives: http://lists.umn.edu/archives/mou-net.html

The discovery of the Lewis's Woodpecker here in Minnesota prompted me to pass on this woodpecker trivia question. I was recently on a trip to Oregon and California and, while I was there, I subscribed to several local bird lists. Oregon recently had a first state sighting of a Red-bellied Woodpecker. That gave rise to the following posts about which states have the most woodpecker sightings. California would need to find an American Three-toed Woodpecker to catch the leader. Oregon, which has that species, would need a Gila Woodpecker and a Gilded Flicker. Here is a summary of your responses: AB 1 (14 spp) AK 1 (9 spp, but the only state with Great-spotted) AR 1 (10 spp) BC 2 (14 spp) CO 2 (12 spp) FL 1 (10 spp) HI 1 (No, Gates, there are no woodpeckers in Hawaii. However, there were ALMOST woodpeckers in Hawaii...see below) KS 1 (12 spp) NM 5 (14 spp) NV 4 (see below) RI 1 (lowest of all states and provinces with 6 spp) (some of you guessed AZ and TX, but I already gave you their rankings in the original post) And, the answer is NEVADA! Nevada is only missing 4 Nor Am woodpecker species (not counting Great-spotted): Golden-fronted, Red-cockaded, Arizona, and Ivory-billed. And, only 4 of Nevada's woodpecker species are considered review species, giving the state 15 regularly occurring woodpeckers. Jim Kopitzke, Alan Contreras, Rob Conway, and Joel Geier all got this correct. New Mexico is a good guess, especially since the state ranks 4th for all birds on its list (just above Oregon, which rests comfortably in 5th place, with CA, TX, and AZ in spots 1-3). Here are the top states and provinces: 19 - Nevada 17 - California 16 - TX and OR 15 - AZ and OK 14 - AB, BC, ID, NM, WY 13 - MT, NE, UT, WA NOTE: It is possible that some of these have been bumped up a notch in the last few years, as I have not had time to check the very latest official state lists, except for the states at 15 and up. Regarding woodpeckers in Hawaii, the following note was published in the November 1901 edition of The Condor: The Commissioner of Agriculture and Forestry of the Territory of Hawaii is desirous of securing a supply of live woodpeckers and writes Mr. W. Otto Emerson as follows: 'I am desirous of obtaining a number of the downy woodpeckers to be introduced here on the different islands. Will you kindly let me know where I can obtain say 100 or 200 and the probable cost?' Those who can assist in the matter are urged to communicate with W. Otto Emerson, Haywards, Cal. I saw the male Blue Grosbeak this morning at 140th Street. Very good directions were given in previous posts. I waited about 45 minutes but he finally showed up about 8:15. He then perched on wires and the small cedar trees and sang his heart out. He also flew into the wheat field on the south side of the road. Also present were several very vocal Dickcissels, a couple of Eastern Kingbirds defending their territory, and many sparrows. Clay-colored Sparrows were the most numerous, with a few Chipping Sparrows also seen. I was just on a trail in Roseville when another birder told me he heard a Hooded Warbler singing in Reservoir Woods. [mou] Yellow Rail in Itasca County
Tonight (Wed 5-14) I finally found a Yellow Rail in Itasca County. I heard it calling three times; the third time was close and very clear. I was at a pull off on the south side of Hwy 2, 5.6 miles east of Hwy 65. This pull off was constructed a couple of years ago and it might actually be a boat launch. However, it does get you off the highway and is right along an extensive cattail marsh. One disadvantage of this site is that Hwy 2 is quite busy and you can hear the traffic noise for a long distance. That makes it difficult to get a very long period of time that is quiet enough to hear the rails. I also heard several American Bitterns and several Soras calling. I was also surprised to hear a couple of Sandhill Cranes calling from out in the marsh. Earl Orf www.earlorfphotos.com -- next part -- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... According to Bob Janssen's county lists on the MOU web site neither of these birds has been reported in Itasca County before. There were also two Short-billed Dowitchers in this same area. This field is located on CR 10, between 4 and 5 miles south of Hwy 169 (they intersect in the town of Bovey). The field is just south of the Trout Lake Community Center. This year the field is heavily flooded and is proving to be a good shorebird spot (shorebird spots are hard to find in Itasca County). This evening Shawn Conrad and I went back there and this time there were also 2 Semi-palmated Plovers, at least 4 Least Sandpipers, and one Solitary Sandpiper. [mou] Loons in Ramsey County
As many people have already mentioned, open water is drawing concentrations of waterfowl in the Twin Cities area. I stopped at a small lake in the town of White Bear Lake today. I think the name of it is Goose Lake. Just south of downtown White Bear Lake there are small lakes on both sides of Hwy 61. I know that the one on the east side is Goose Lake and I think the one on the west side is connected and is also considered to be Goose Lake. The one on the west side was open today and held 60 Common Loons. It also had the following: Ring-necked Duck (at least 100) Great Egret (1) Coot (about 50) Ruddy Duck (1) Redhead (3) Red-breasted Merganser (about 10 pair) Pied-billed Grebe (10) American Wigeon (one pair) Lesser Scaup (5) I wouldn't have thought that this little lake was even big enough for a loon to take off from. This is not about a bird sighting but it is so amazing I had to pass it on. I know that many of you have tried digiscoping. That's how I started out as well. I mostly use my DSLR now but I still stay subscribed to the digiscoping list serve. The following message came through and shows the amazing possibilities of digiscoping. ** Many of us enjoy sharing our digi-scoped photos with friends, but I suspect that few of them realize the awesome magnification that can be achieved. Swarovski Optik sponsors an annual contest, where they ask the participants to include a shot of the scene taken before mounting the scope to the camera. I decided to do that yesterday when viewing a male Peregrine Falcon at the Point Reyes National Seashore Lighthouse viewpoint. Bird was about 200 feet + distant and well down the rock outcrop. Scenic photo taken with the 8400 at full zoom (21.6mm). Digi-scope shot also at 21.6mm, and the photo was cropped about 50%. Of further interest, the height of the bird in the original scenic shot is 19 pixels, or less than 1%. [mou] Black-backed Woodpeckers, Boreal Chickadees-Scenic SP
I walked the fire tower trail at Scenic State Park this morning. I found a pair of Black-backed Woodpeckers about 100-150 yds past the point where the trail splits. This was on the part that leads to the fire tower. Before you get to the place where the woodpeckers are you will find a spruce bog. That's where I saw the Boreal Chickadee. I also saw the following: Ovenbird (several) Canada Warbler Blackpoll Warbler Black White Warbler Black-throated Green Warbler Winter Wren Brown Creeper (2) Earl Orf www.earlorfphotos.com -- next part -- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... [mou] FW: Snowy Egret, Carver County
The Snowy Egret was still at Chaska Lake at 2:30 today (5-25-07). Earl Orf www.earlorfphotos.com -Original Message- From: mou-net-bounces at moumn.org [mailto:mou-net-boun...@moumn.org] On Behalf Of rdunlap at gac.edu Sent: Friday, May 25, 2007 11:47 AM To: mou-net at moumn.org Subject: [mou] Snowy Egret, Carver County Around 10:00 this morning I found an adult Snowy Egret at Chaska Lake in eastern Carver County. From Hwy. 41 in downtown Chaska, go west on 1st Street to the Chaska ballfields. Park in the parking lot and take the main trail south which runs along the eastern side of the lake. In about two hundred yards the woods will open up and you will be able to view most of the lake looking west. The Snowy Egret was actively feeding on the close shore from here. It was still present when I left around 10:45. Also on the lake was a flock of about 45 White-rumped Sandpipers. These birds could only be viewed with a scope, as they were feeding on the far western shore. Water levels at Chaska Lake are continuing to drop, and it looks like this will be good shorebird habitat throughout the summer and fall as long as water levels stay low. A scope is absolutely necessary though. There was also a Yellow-billed Cuckoo calling loudly that could be easily heard from the lake viewing spot. Bob Dunlap, back in Carver County for the summer
[mou] Willets in Itasca County
Shorebirds are very hard to find in Itasca County because we just don't have the right habitat. So, I was pleasantly surprised to find two Willets at the Trout Lake boat landing in the town of Coleraine yesterday. They were resting on a rock point near some Ring-billed Gulls. When they flew up, circled around and landed again in the same spot I saw the diagnostic black and white wing pattern of the Willet. I also saw a Solitary Sandpiper in a small pond near our driveway. We live near Highway 169 and CR 7 (also called the Scenic Highway). Earl Orf www.earlorfphotos.com -- next part -- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... It is vary interesting to see deep rust colored feathers where a Peregrine would normally have white feathers. We are speculating that it has a nest back in the mine pit northeast of Bovey. We have seen the rust coloring on other birds in our area and suspect that it comes from dust bathing in the mine pit. We are pleased to announce the formation of a new Listserve, hosted by = the University of Georgia, that also hosts Georgia Birds, and Pelagics-SE. Shorebirds (or Waders, if you prefer) are a unique and fascinating group = of birds, because of their wide ranges throughout the world, and some of = the most impressive migrations of all birds, flying from the Arctic tundra = all the way to southern South America, Africa and Australia and back again, = with vagrant species turning up in many unexpected locations. They can be confoundingly difficult to identify, with many similar species and overlapping characteristics. And due to habitat loss of wetlands in breeding, migration stopover and wintering grounds, many species are = facing severe ecological pressures and population losses. The focus of this listserve is to create a worldwide forum for reporting the observation = of seasonal migration in differing areas, discovery of rarities, discussion = of identification problems, and for promotion of knowledge of conservation issues concerning shorebirds. As with other lists, please keep posts on the topic of shorebirds. Off topic posts, such as general political comments, religion, flaming, etc, = are not allowed. Commercial topics are not encouraged, unless they are announcements concerning upcoming events that feature Shorebirds. = Please use discretion as you would with other lists. To Subscribe, send an email to the following link: lists...@listserv.uga.eduabout:blank type in the body of the message: subscribe SHOREBIRDS FIRSTNAME LASTNAME (for example: subscribe SHOREBIRDS ROBERT WALLACE) Please leave the Subject line of the email blank Frequently asked questions will be answered in a following email. Attachments (such as photos) are not currently possible. Links to = photos for discussion should be posted in the email, and we hope to be able to = set up a site to download photos to. We look forward to reading of sightings and shorebird movements from all over the world, and learning more about these fascinating birds. Thank = you to Steve Holzman of FWS and Sara Schweitzer of UGA for their efforts to = set up this service. Best regards and good birding! R.D. [mou] Black-backed Woodpeckers on North Shore trip
This is a multi-part message in MIME format. --=_NextPart_000_0001_01C4A357.C66904B0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit My wife and I just returned from a week on the North Shore. Sorry for the late posting but I had no internet access during the time we were there. On Monday 9/20 I found a pair (male and female) of Black-backed Woodpeckers where the South Brule River crosses the Gunflint Trail. This is about 15 miles north of Grand Marais. I was in the parking lot at that spot and played a CD and they came right to the area. I also saw Cackling Geese at three locations. The first was a single goose at Tofte Park on Tues 9/21. Then I saw one with two Canada Geese at Fenstad's Resort where we were staying. It was there both 9/21 and 9/22. This gave me a great ID comparison as the 3 geese were together most of the time. The Cackling Goose was also swimming with some mallards and it was very interesting to see that it was just slightly bigger than the mallards. The last one was seen in the bay at Sugarloaf SNA. This is a very nice birding area, by the way. At the Department of Transportation ponds in Illgen City I saw an American Pipit and an Am Golden Plover on 9/19 and a Semipalmated Sandpiper today (9/25). I also saw one American Pipit at the Beaver Bay Sewage Ponds on 9/19 and 6 Pipits at the Silver Bay Airport on 9/19. Has anyone else noted a lack of hummingbirds at their feeders this summer? We had good numbers at the start of the season, but we only have one or two still visiting. Normally in July we have 10-20 birds visiting our 7 feeders. Has the unseasonably cold weather resulted in mortality, or has there been widespread nest failure and early migration. [mou] Bonaparte's Gulls in Non-breeding plumage
This is a multi-part message in MIME format. --=_NextPart_000_0017_01C322F0.98DC3690 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit The very last birds I saw during my Itasca County big day on Friday 5/23/03 were 4 Bonaparte's Gulls at Trout Lake in Bovey. That isn't too newsworthy but the fact that they were in non-breeding plumage seemed very odd to me. My wife and I saw about 20 of them in the same place a couple of days ago but they were all in breeding plumage (black heads). The 4 that I saw on Friday looked like the ones we see in Florida in January! According to Sibley, non-breeding plumage lasts from August to April. Does anyone have an explanation for this?
