[mou-net] orchard oriole
From: Leslie Marcus Date: Sat, Jun 1, 2019 at 4:41 PM Subject: orchard oriole Today at 11:30am at Westwood Environmental Nature Center in St. Louis Park, Hennepin County, i saw a first summer male orchard oriole. it was singing full voice when it caught my attention from the many baltimore orioles singing & showing nearby. I observed it from about 20 feet away & saw it mostly from the underside, a brilliant yellow with the black chin & throat. not a very good view of wings, but could see bluish wings & white white wing bars. i followed it for a short time, then didn’t see or hear it again, but couldn’t spend more time looking again after that. It was on the south side of the lake, west of the south dock of the lake (which is named “the T Dock,” near an area not too distant, where there’s a longish old wooden bench with short grass in front, south side of boardwalk. a new bird for my Westwood list! [mou-net] Least Bittern, Henn. Co.
A this morning about 10:30am Ruth Hiland, Phyllis Bofferding I (plus two others) saw a juvenile least bittern at Wood lake Nature Center in Richfield, Hennepin Co. It was seen well from the boardwalk on the east side, looking toward the southwest cattails. A calling sora attracted our attention, which turned out to be right along side the bittern. It stayed perfectly still for a few minutes, then withdrew into the cattails, same location. [mou-net] Tropical Kingbird
The kingbird was not seen from about 7am until 11am this morning. It was first spotted by Kim Risen in shrubs east of the picnic table at mile marker 36. It was far across the grassy field in green shrubs dead bare branches on the left side of the protruding island of trees bushes. Several birders got close looks and heard it calling. [mou-net] great blacked-back gull, hennepin co.
This afternoon at about 3pm., I saw an adult great black-backed gull mixed in with a long line of gulls on Lake Harriet in Mpls. I watched it for about 20 minutes or so, and then it disappeared. Chet Meyers called me later, after sunset, to report that he saw the great blacked-backed gull (along with 2 lesser black-backed gulls and the glaucous gull) standing on an ice shelf on Lake of the Isles. What’s after the trifecta? ' The great blacked back gull flew off after a while. Leslie Marcus St. Louis Park, Hennepin Co. [mou-net] western kingbird, hennepin co.
A western kingbird was seen at westwood Environmental Education Center in St. Louis Park, Hennepin Co. It was perched in a tree above the bench just west of the boardwalk that goes over the water on the north side of the lake. I could see the withe outer tail feathers, and it appeared to be an adult. I didn’t have a scope, so I can’t be sure about that, but it was still a brilliant yellow color on the breast. There were a smattering of warblers, such as wilson’s, black and white, bay breasted, nashville, oven bird, and juvenile common yellowthroateds. Westwood is at 8300 W. Franklin Ave. in St. Louis Park, 55426. One access is on Hwy 394 to Texas Ave. So., turn west on Franklin to the first stop sign. A half block on Franklin gets you into the nature center. [mou-net] Fw: no bohemian waxwing in hennepin co.
I am resending this message (sorry for the mess-up): I searched for the bohemian waxwing this morning from about 9:45 to 10:30am and no luck. The robin flock was still present. It was not a good sign to notice two feathers, brightly colored, hanging from branches on the hosting tree. One had the whole shaft intact, and it was mostly a bright yellow. [mou-net] buff-breasted sandpipers relocated in chisago county
At about 10:30am this morning, I was able to relocate the buff-breasted sandpipers in North Branch, Chisago County, as reported by Doug Kieser yesterday (July 25). They have moved from the north side of the road at 400th Street, 0.6 miles east of Hemingway Ave., to the south side of the road in the dried up field. This made them somewhat of a challenge to find, as they blended so well into the dried field. Eventually they got a bit closer so that I could see them very clearly with the scope. I saw 4 birds, and possibly a fifth out in the distance. I couldn't find any baird's sandpipers, and today there seemed to be far more than 50 killdeer in both fields north and south of 400th. [mou-net] Fw: hennepin co. le conte's sparrow
At noon today, Joey and Alex Sundvall and I saw a Le Conte's sparrow at Westwood Nature Center in St. Louis Park, Hennepin County, Mn. It was perched in a tumble of reeds towards the lake, not singing. Credit goes to Joey (Alex's mother) for intially spotting the bird. Two hours later, Linda Sparling and I relocated the bird in the same area. At the nature center, the bird was at the base of the steps leading down from the visitor center to the lake. Go about 20 feet north of the steps, and this is the area where the bird was seen. Directions to the Center: Westwood Nature Center is west of Hwy. 100 on 394. Go south on Louisiana Ave. to Cedar Lake Rd. Go west (right) on Cedar Lake Rd. to Texas. Go north (right) on Texas to Franklin Ave. Turn west (left) on Franklin past the stop sign for half a block, and turn north (right) into the parking lot of the nature center.
