[mou-net] White-throated Sparrow, Dakota Co

[Miller Johnson]

I've had a White-throated Sparrow here all winter. It hangs out with a dozen or 
more juncos, which I'm assuming have been showing it "the way." As the winter 
has continued, it also started coming in at dusk with the cardinals. Most of 
the juncos had disappeared with the warm weather, but about 25 juncos just came 
in and the WTSP was with them!  

We've had a young Sharp-shinned Hawk and an adult Cooper's hunting on our 
property this winter, so I've had some nervous moments, always anxious to see 
if the White-throated Sparrow reappears after their visits. So far so good.

A few overwinter most winters in the southern part of the state. But not many,

[mou-net] White-Throated Sparrow, Redpolls, Minneapolis

Went to the Cancer Survivors Park to look for the Hoary Redpoll reported
earlier in the week.  Stayed as long as I could, which wasn't long due to
the -7 temp and no sun (around 8 am).  Nonetheless, found two flocks of
bird, both very approachable.  The first was mostly House Sparrows, but
with 3 White-Throateds mixed in (1 adult, 2 juv.).  The other flock was all
redpolls--about 25 or so.  I didn't know there were Commons here too, so
the task was not as simple as I'd hoped for, but I attempted to sort
through them to find an obvious Hoary.  I didn't see any that were
definitively Hoary to me, but there were 2 or 3 that were definitely
contenders.  I snapped as many pics as I could before my fingers completely
went numb, and I'll have to figure out if I got one later once I sort
through the photos.

[mou-net] white throated sparrow a Tennessee (?) warbler in downtown Mpls

I heard a white throated sparrow singing from the trees in Peavey Plaza in 
downtown Minneapolis again this morning (June 17).  I have heard one singing 
there for a couple of weeks and keep expecting it to move on north but it's 
still here singing away.  Seems quite late for it to still be here.
 
I also heard a call I wasn't sure about and finally located a warbler sized 
bird, white or light and unstreaked breast/stomach, fine, warbler like bill, 
and a loud chipping call that reminded me of the chipping of a swamp sparrow 
with a little-more-sweet cadence to the ending.  I didn't have binoculars and 
my best guess is a Tennessee Warbler but the song isn't exactly like the 
samples I've found, nor exactly like the ones I saw singing this spring.  If 
anyone else heard or saw it and has a better ID, I'd be happy to hear from you.
 
In other bird news, Tuesday morning around 7:30 am, a downtown Peregrine was 
circling the McGladrey building at 8th and Nicollet, calling incessantly.  
After watching for some minutes I saw a buteo shaped bird fly away from a ledge 
just below the roof of the building.  The buteo (red-tailed hawk?) was larger 
than the Peregrine.  Perhaps it had tried to raid the nest on the Multifoods 
Tower or had just entered the restricted airspace and was trying to hide on the 
ledge to get away from the parent(s).  An interesting morning that was!

How long does it need to stay to be considered an over-wintering bird?

The snow was early, so maybe it is too early to tell.

coming from a tree on the north side of 31st street between 34th and 35th

A White-throated Sparrow that I banded near Dundas, Minnesota, on 3 May
2007 was recovered in Montichello, Arkansas on 20 March 2012.  Since the
bird was at least in its second year when banded, the age when recovered
was at least six years, a respectable age for a sparrow. More details on my

A white-throated sparrow was outside the House of Charity on 7th avenue in 
downtown Minneapolis yesterday morning at 630 AM.
 
Was singing from a treetop.  Did not have my binoculars, but could easily make 
out the black eye line, white above the eye, and distinct call.
 
On the way to work today, it wasn't there again.
 
Curious if this is an overwintering bird or a new arrival.

[mou-net] White-throated Sparrow

Has anyone else seen a White-throated Sparrow? 
I'm in the south Maplewood area of the Twin Cities, sandwiched between St. Paul 
and Woodbury. 
I saw the first one in my yard on 12/17 and another today 12/21.

Pam, On 12/19 during the Christmas Bird Count, my husband Steve and I saw one 
in Hillside Cemetary in Minneapolis (near the Quarry Center.) Otherwise, 
they've been gone from our yard, about 1 mile away from the Quarry, for a month 
or more.
