Solaris Kernel Parameters for WMQ Client

2004-12-01 Thread Williams, Arlen
While installing WMQ client 5.3.0.6 on a Solaris server, I saw the following
warning displayed. I can't find anything in the Quick Beginnings about
needed kernel parameters for client installs, just for server installs. Does
the client install need the same parameters as a server?

 Checking kernel configuration...

8388608 max shared memory segment size (SHMMAX)
100 shared memory identifiers (SHMMNI)
 10 semaphore identifiers (SEMMNI)
 60 semaphores in system (SEMMNS)
25 max semaphores per id (SEMMSL)
10 max operations per semop call (SEMOPM)
30 undo structures in system (SEMMNU)
10 max undo entries per process (SEMUME)
   2048 max message size (MSGMAX)

ADVISORY WARNING - You may need to alter the kernel parameters listed
 above
to run WebSphere MQ. See the Quick Beginnings manual for more information.

Re: MQM Group Permissions on HP-UX

2004-11-15 Thread Williams, Arlen
Title: Message

You need to refresh
the security information in the queue manager when you add a userid to a group.
The queue manager reads the userid/group information in at start. You can use
runmqsc and enter the refresh security command or restart the queue
manager.

Permissions on HP-UX
After reading documentation, and the various
responses to emails on this forum about access rights, I thought Unix MQ
permissions worked at the group level. I added a second userid (mqmoper) to
group mqm.
I tried executing a process from this userid and the
process hangs on the MQCONN. I execute the same process from the mqm userid, and
it runs fine. I've seen this behavior before, and it usually traces back to
permissions. If permissions do work on the group level, shouldn't userid mqmoper
have the same MQ access rights as userid mqm ? I do a dspmqaut on both userid's
and they're identical.

Roger,

This was truly a heroic effort, but why didn't you try to run the install
with the MQPINUSEOK flag, as suggested in the memo.ptf?

E.g.: U200212A.exe -a MQPINUSEOK=1

Then you only need to reboot once and you don't have to worry about anything
else.

Manual labor aside, there is one other potential problem with renaming
files. When the CSD gets installed the old files are backed up, so that you
can revert to the previous level if you need to. (Although in the past
seven years I never had to do that :) The renamed files won't get backed up,
so you have to manually move them into the backup directory and change their
name back to the original.

No matter how many things I stopped and how many times I rebooted the

Besides what mentioned below, here is what I did to resolve the
 problem:
 - Removed the MQ Taskbar icon from the Startup folder
 - Set the IBM MQ Series service to 'Manual' then REBOOTED.
 - Tried the CSD07 install again and of course it failed
 - Checked the CSD install log by doing the following command:
   notepad %TEMP%\amqicsdn.txt
 - Search for the string 'Target file is in use'
 - For each entry found (I had 5), renamed it to 'roger_amq*'
 - REBOOTED again.
 - After the the reboot, deleted the 'roger_amq*' files
 - Tried the CSD07 install again and this time it worked.
 - REBOOT again.
 - Put back the Task Bar icon in the startup folder
 - Set the IBM MQ Series service to 'Automatic' and started the service.
 - REBOOTED one last time to make sure everything worked and it did.

Now mqver gives 530.7 CSD07. Yeah!!!

Gunilla,

If I understand you correctly what you're saying is that when your channel
has a network problem the sender channel tries to reconnect but the receiver
channel hasn't yet realised that there is a network problem since it is
still sitting in a TCP/IP recv().

The solution to this problem is to use AdoptMCA. You can configure your
server to say that if a new connection is made over the same channel from
the same QM and from the same IP address that the previous instance of the
channel should be terminated.

If you are referring to a problem with a conflict between MQ 5.3 and patches
to the Solaris loader resulting in unexpected process terminations, then I
believe that latest Solaris loader patch will work fine with MQ 5.3 and
CSD05 or CSD06. There were problems with earlier Solaris loader patch
levels.

If this is not the problem you are referring to, then I think we'll need a
chapter and verse description of the incompatibility you refer to, and
probably you'll need to involve IBM support.

Dear MQ Specialists,
Would anyone be able to comment the problem described below ? We have a very
similar problem:

We use WebSphere MQ 5.3 for Solaris (Solaris 5.8). There are about 100
applications connecting to MQ using the binding mode (ie server, ie local
connections, NOT client connections through a channel). After we reach a
certain load on the machine where the applications and MQ run, MQ starts
returning error code 2009 to any MQI call. Due to the documentation this
could happen if the QMGR goes down, nevertheless, we checked the QMGR, IP
listener and logs and we cannot find any problem there. QMGR is running and
in the log, there are no messages at all.

What may be important, we do not have installed any higher CSD as there was
a registered problem with a Solaris Patch (MQ patches and Solaris patches
cannot coexist on the machine). We will try to remove the Solaris patch and
install current CSD on MQ, if it helps. But, any comments would be welcome -
has anyone seen this problem ? Does anyone have any advice ?

Thanks in advance,
Miroslav

libmqm.so), and connect using MQCONN, supplying the queue manager name
(there is no default queue manager defined).

Additional info:
* Solaris 5.8
* MQ 5.2 CSD06 (I know CSD07 is availbale)
* Applications linked with libmqm.so
* There are no MQ environment variables defined (no MQSERVER).
* This host has only two queue managers defined.
* The queue manager is a member of a cluster (six qmgrs total).

I'm not getting anything obvious in the error logs (neither the global or
the queue manager local). Nothing that would indicate a server error prior
to the application getting a reason code of 2009.

XA configuration with Oracle

2004-04-20 Thread Williams, Arlen
Passing this question on from a coworker.

In 2003 I unsuccessfully attempted to configure WebSphere MQ 5.3 to serve as
the XA transaction manager coordinating transactions with an Oracle 9i
database, both running on Windows2000 Server. After much trial and error, I
concluded that the XA switch file, supplied by IBM to be used with JDBC, did
not support connections to Oracle 9i. IBM support sent me the following
explanation:

MQ can act as a transaction manager to Oracle 9 (as a resource manager)
using non-JDBC XA- interface protocol. Additional JTA support for JDBC
protocol is planned to be added in a forthcoming MQ service delivery
targeted for 1Q04 timeframe. . Therefore the existing xa switch file cannot
currently be used with Oracle 9. However future support is planned. .

Does anyone know whether the JDBC switch file for use with Oracle 9 is now
available? How about for Oracle 10g?

Subject: Sender Channel issues

Hello,

We've got a scenario where we have 2 queue managers,
QMA and QMB

QMA is on Windows and QMB is queue manager which is on
a AIX 2 node HACMP cluster (configured as Active -
Active). QMB data files are on the shared disk visible
to both the nodes of the cluster.
Data is send from QMA to QMB.

The issue we face:
Messages build up on the transmission queue on QMA.
The sender channel is in a running state however, data
is transferred very slowly. Sometimes the restart of
the sender channel seems to transfer all the messages
on the transmission queue in one go.
This situation often happens when a very large number
of messages are put on the queue in a few seconds

What checks can be done to find the cause of the
problem? We've taken mq trace files which on analysis
indicate network issues. However, our network team say
there are no issues here.

Can MQ clustering be a cause for this?

Any inputs would help a lot

Thanks
WS.

Lazy Binding

2004-04-12 Thread Williams, Arlen
To enable some BMC functionality I have been asked to disable lazy binding
on amqzlaa0_nd. I will include the message from BMC concerning this. My
question is what is the effect on doing this? This is on Solaris 5.8 and WMQ
5.3 with CSD04.

Arlen Williams
EDS

Resolution ID: 126225
Type: RESOLUTION
Date Entered: 2002-07-15 13:29:19.0

Applicable Products and Versions
Product Release Version

PATROL for MQ - Operator for Distributed Systems 2.3.01
PATROL for WebSphere MQ for Distributed Systems 4.0.01

Symptom/Question
Why can't BMC MQSeries Extensions be enabled on Solaris systems until lazy
binding is disabled?

Additional Problem or Contact Information
Most binary files on Solaris are set up to run with lazy binding enabled.
Lazy binding determines when the dynamic loader resolves symbols from shared
libraries. The technique of resolving symbols only when they are used and
not at startup is called lazy binding. BMC MQSeries Extensions requires
immediate binding.
If Lazy Binding is not set correctly on Solaris and the Extensions are
active, the symptom you will notice is no collection of QStats data. For
example, you would see all zeroes in the Queue Stats Report and no last call
times.

Resolution

To disable lazy binding set the environment variable LD_BIND_NOW=on or run
the bmcznow utility as root against /opt/mqm/bin/amqzlaa0_nd to shut off
lazy binding in that one module. If MQSeries maintenance is applied and the
environment variable has not been set the bmcznow utility will have to be
executed again. The preferred solution is to run the bmcznow utility as root
against /opt/mqm/bin/amqzlaa0_nd to shut off lazy binding in that one
module. Alternatively the LD_BIND_NOW environment variable can be set to
disable lazy binding for the queue manager process in whatever script that
call strmqm. If the environment variable were set system-wide (not
recommended) then it would affect other processes.

Add the following line to the script that starts the queue manager:
LD_BIND_NOW=1 export LD_BINDING_NOW strmqm queue manager name

OR

Issue the following command to run the bmcznow utility:
/opt/BMCS/mq/bin/bmcznow /opt/mqm/bin/amqzlaa0_nd

WMQ 5.3 Upgrade on Solaris

2004-03-16 Thread Williams, Arlen
I am preparing to upgrade WMQ to 5.3 (with CSD06) from 5.2. The 5.2 system
has had several CSDs applied. Is there any way to shorten the upgrade
procedure for what I believe is the steps that I will need to follow -
remove each CSD package in reverse order of it being applied, remove the
mq-java package, then remove the mqm package. Removing a CSD package can
take awhile because it is restoring what was there before each CSD install.
I really think there should be a shortcut for a major upgrade (5.2-5.3)
without having to remove each CSD, something like remove all mqm, then do
the installs. Any ideas?

If this is not modified, SVRCONN channels won't start.
As was pointed out to me, there is a script to update this after HPUX

That was almost near to a jackpot, Matt !!

I looked for the amq.cat in the /opt/mqm ( and also in /var/mqm, just to
make sure). But I could not locate any. Then I looked more closely at this
and this is what I have found:

On a Solaris MQ installation, the amq.cat file is neither placed in /opt/mqm
nor in /var/mqm directories. Instead it is placed directly in the
/usr/lib/locale/C/LC_MESSAGES.

I figured this out from another MQ installation.

So, I copied the amq.cat from a good-looking server to the bad-one into
the /usr/lib/locale/C/LC_MESSAGES directory. And then it was working just
fine.

For WMQI, we need to create two soft links in the
/usr/lib/locale/C/LC_MESSAGES directory pointing to the catalog files in
/opt/wmqi/messages/lang directory.

Thank you Matt for leading me in that direction.

MQ uses message catalogue files to render internal message codes into human
readable format. If you have not copied the message catalogue files and/or
your environment profile does not define their location MQ will be unable
to display an error message. The error message could well have been a
successful response message eg WebSphere MQ queue manager started.

The message catalogue file is called amq.cat and normally located in
/opt/mqm/lib/locale/C/LC_MESSAGES, this will be dependant upon your profile
LANG environment value. The other environment variable NLSPATH defines
the location of the message catalogue files.

Even though we have copied the data, we never done the software. We always

One of the reasons for these messages to pop are security related - ie: when
MQ is not authorised to write either the errors directory and/or logs

Let us know, how it goes.

Subject: Copying MQ binaries

In a recent change in our dev. environment, we have copied all the MQ
binaries from an existing Solaris8 server to a new Solaris8 server. We have
taken care of creating all the soft links that an MQ installation would
create in /usr/lib and /usr/bin directories. The new server picked up
everything and we were able to start WMQ and WMQI without any problems.
Everything looks OK except when a command is executed it would end up giving
a mesage like this --

WebSphere MQ was unable to display an error message for message id
hexadecimal %6, with inserts %1, %2, %3, %4 and %5.

But, the command execution does what it is supposed to do, meaning it
executes successfully except showing the above message.

Every attempt to run a command, results in an FDC generated, and the FDC
contains the same kind of information as displayed at the command prompt.

Some commands like mqver work fine.

Any idea? Is there anything that has to be worried about? Did I miss
something here? Any known issues when the MQ binaries are copied from one
server to another as against a fresh installation?

I understand this is not a recommended procedure, but wanted to know if
someone has already tried this and share their experiences. MQ5.3 CSD05,
WMQI2.1 CSD05 and Solaris8 are the environment details.

TIA.

Hi Arlen,

thanks for the response. I set the MCA user field on mainframe to the id I
used to access the qmgr. but it doesn't work. Is there anything else I need
to set? I remember the command server is always started upon qmgr startup.
So that isn't an issue.

Inquire Cluster Queue Attributes

2004-02-11 Thread Williams, Arlen
Title: Message

We have a situation
where sometimes a clustered queue is put disabled and then put enabled on the
local definition on the queue manager that is not a repository, but the
repository queue manager shows the queue as put disabled. We can do a put
disable/put enable or refresh cluster and this will fix it, but only when we
notice the problem. This is a serious problem for us. We are trying
towrite something to catch this situation, but haven't found a way to
MQINQ the attributes (PUT and CLUSQMGR) for a clustered (not local) queue. I
suppose we can do a runmqsc and display the qcluster to an output file and parse
that, but would rather use MQINQ if possible. Is it possible? We can get the
attribute for the local definition, but need to see what the repository thinks
is the attribute.

How to Specify Ethernet Adapter

2004-01-31 Thread Williams, Arlen
I have a 5.3 WMQ queue manager running on an AIX server that has 3 network
adapters and so 3 different TCP/IP addresses. Because of a firewall I need
to force connections out of this server to go out one specific adapter so
the source TCP/IP address is the one the firewall rules are expecting. Can I
do that by configuring something in the queue manager or is that something
you have to do with a network setting on AIX?

Re: How to Specify Ethernet Adapter

2004-01-31 Thread Williams, Arlen
My problem is this is an MQ cluster repository and the outbound connection
is being created dynamically. The remote queue manager is not a repository
and it is successfully connecting to the repository, but when the repository
tries to create the dynamic channel back to the remote queue manager, it is
failing because it is using the wrong port. It would be nice if it was smart
enough to use the port that the inbound connection used to come in on for
it's connection back. I suppose I could manually define the channel, but
wasn't sure if I should.

Arlen,

For outbound communications you can use the LOCLADDR attribute of the sender
channel to specify the IP address, and optionally the port(s) to use.

For inbound communications start the listener with the -i switch and specify
the IP address to listen on.

amqiclen (was RE: Message Driven Beans and FAIL_IF_QUIESCING)

2004-01-20 Thread Williams, Arlen
Does the amqiclen just cleanup unused semaphores and shared memory? Can I
use it if I shutdown one queue manager, but there is another running?

Subject: Re: Message Driven Beans and FAIL_IF_QUIESCING

On a Unix system, when a queue manager starts it acquires shared memory and
semaphore resources. It uses these during normal operation. If you then end
the queue manager with endmqm QMGRNAME then all of these resources will
get cleaned up and there will be no MQ artifacts left in memory (semaphores
and shared memory segments). On the other hand if you issue endmqm with the
-i parameter (as I did during our test) or the -p parameter then these
shared memory and semaphore resources will NOT get cleaned up. That means
that the queue manager will end but the resources it used in memory will
not get cleaned up. This will happen whether my MDBs are connected or
not, which is why it doesn't have anything to do really with MDBs
specifically.

The problem with this is that when you restart the queue manager it will
attempt to acquire new shared memory and semaphore resources, as it
normally does. However, if OLD resources are still resident in memory
(because they weren't cleaned up during the last MQ shutdown) then it is
possible that the current instance of the queue manager (that is starting)
might interpret these resources as belonging to processes that are still
running. This is why we got the error messages we saw.

In most cases the queue manager will start OK even if it finds old
resources in memory, but it can encounter the error we saw.

The -i switch on the endmqm command means shut down immediately. Do not
wait for connected programs to end when they want to (like MDBs). Without
that -i switch, we run the risk of our QM shutdown waiting forever for the
MDBs to end. This is why I always use the -i switch when ending a QM.

At 5.3, there is the undocumented amqiclen command that cleans up these
resources.

We are testing this command at the end of our shutdown scripts and at the
beginning
of our startup scripts. It cleans up old memory resources if they are
present
after a QM has come down, eliminating the problem we saw on subsequent
startups.

Back to MDBs:
I still think we will research the polling interval setting to help MDBs
ralize that the QM is gone, as that can
only help prevent problems.

I don't know. I am asking the customer to help me test this. (or maybe

Hopefully it will not write to the log every time it simply checks to see if
the connection is still valid (meaning the QM is up).

Subject: Re: Message Driven Beans and FAIL_IF_QUIESCING

WL MDBs are pure JMS implementations of MDBs, and do not have IBM specific
capabilities, like WAS MDBs do. If a JMS object has an IBM specific property
(like FAIL_IF_QUIESCING), it will just be ignored by the WL MDB.

A WL MDB can check to see if its cached connection to the QM is still valid
every X seconds, and if it is not, it can end, throwing an exception to be
handling by the container. The restart of that MDB can then be handled in
whatever manner is suitable. Meanwhile the QM should be able to end cleanly
with no MDB connections that would prevent a clean start up.

If I understand it correctly, jms-polling-interval-seconds is what we need
to set. This is an optional element that can be declared in the
weblogic-ejb-jar.xml deployment descriptor. Typically this is not set, so
my thought is that if we actually do set it, it will reach out to the QM
every interval and if the Connection is lost, kill the connection and kill
the MDB. The issue, if this does work as I am hoping, and kills the
connection, is that the Container will then continually poll the QM every
interval consuming resources and writing the log. If this occurs over an
extended period of time, the log file has the potential to grow to rather
large proportions.

Not being a JMS expert, I am not 100% sure of this solution, and would like
to see it tested, but it seems to make sense, no?

The only difference between this and the other servers, is that this is a NT

Has anyone else had something similar with the Windows 2003 cluster.

The error file contains the following 2 entries repeated several times at
each queue manager startup.

---
AMQ6188: The system could not dynamically load the shared library
'AAD01:[SYS]AMQSWLM0' due to a problem with the library. The
errno was 536895880 and the error message was 'function not implemented '.
The
queue manager will continue without this library.

EXPLANATION:
This message applies to AIX and HP-UX systems. The shared library
'AAD01:[SYS]AMQSWLM0' failed to load correctly due to a problem

ACTION:
Check that the library exists and is in the correct place with the correct
file
permissions etc. and has not been corrupted.

AMQ7210: The Cluster Workload exit module could not be loaded.

EXPLANATION:
The Cluster Workload exit module 'AAD02:[SYS.AA147395.LYNX]AMQSWLM0' could
not
be loaded for reason xecU_E_ERROR_IN_DLL.
ACTION:
Correct the problem with the Cluster Workload exit module
'AAD01:[SYS]AMQSWLM0'

I cut the sample down to the following code.

#include stdio.h
#include cmqc.h
#include cmqxc.h

void MQENTRY clwlFunction ( MQWXP *parms )
 {
   return;
 }

void MQStart(){;}

I compile it with this command.

cc/include=mqs_include amqswlm0

I link it with this command.

link/share amqswlm0/opt

This is the link options file

AMQSWLM0
Sys$Share:MQM/Share
SYMBOL_VECTOR=(clwlFunction=PROCEDURE,MQStart=PROCEDURE)

The dis qmgr shows this.

CLWLEXIT(AAD01:[SYS]AMQSWLM0(clwlFunction))

Any ideas? Does the cluster workload exit actually work on VMS?

Re: Can't install CSD04 on W2K

2003-07-18 Thread Williams, Arlen
Actually I was referring to the following tool.

http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/handle.shtml

I have also used the listdlls tool and actually recommend all 3 (Process
Explorer, Handle and ListDLLs) when you can't find what is holding a
resource open.

http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/listdlls.shtml

This little free tool is what Arlen was talking about I think. It saved my
arse this morning. I think it is better than Process Explorer for finding MQ
related dlls. If you install it on your C drive, run the following command:

C:\listdlls.exe listdlls_Output.txt

This piped all the output to a file that I was then able to do a search on.
Looking for the test string MQ, I found that smlogsvc.exe and pdlsvc.exe
has MQ dlls open. Process Explorer did not show that these two processes had
MQ dlls open. But Process Explorer was helpful in that it told me what
application was smlogsvc and pdlsvc. Turns out they were services called
Performance Data Log Service and Performance Logs and Alerts Service. I
stopped those two and was able to install CSD04.

P.S. The output of listdll can be large. My plain text fie after stopping a
lot of stuff still grew to 175K, so be patient while it runs.

I would highly recommend Process Explorer from
http://www.sysinternals.com

It lets your search for processes holding .ddls by name string. You can
then easily identify the culprit. The tool also lets you kill the problem
process, including many processes which the task manager will refuse to
kill.

I have done a few. I got quite a problem log going with all the below
solutions when it comes to installing CSDs on Windows.

Make sure you have no runmq* or amq* processes running in Task Manager.
Make sure there are no MQ monitoring tools still running, like Tivoli or
QPASA.
Make sure Norton Antivirus is off.
Make sure the MQServices Icon in the taskbar tray in the lower right hand
corner is no longer there. Sometimes you have to even roll your mouse over
it to make it disappear after you killed the service!
Give all this a couple of minutes to give Windows a chance to clean up
internally.

And make sure you don't do the following, which I wasted an hour on last
night when I did it!

Create a folder ../WebSphere MQ/CSD04
Put the CSD04 .exe file in this folder.
When it asks you where to extract the install files, you pick the same
folder.
When it asks you where to install CSD04, you pick the same folder.
If you do this, you will get the MQ in use error! Some sort of loop I
guess.
Download, extract and install into 3 different folders.

Hello,

We are sending large messages (more than 4MB each) over an Internet
connection using MQSeries. The receiving end points are sometimes connected
with a simple Dial-Up connection.

Is someone familiar with a way in MQSeries to resume a receive for a
message if the connection fails in the middle of the receive process and
continue to load just the portion of the message that was not read yet?
Today, we need to receive the whole message all over again.

Is there a product that supports this feature in MQSeries?
Did someone encounter this problem and found a solution for it?

Thanks for your help

Justin,

I stand corrected, and do apologize for my erroneous statement, it seems
that
the docs are available online. I guess it never occured to me to look in
the
'previous' editions list for a product that is still considered 'current'
and
supported. Thanks for the clarification.

As to my original question ... I checked my Queue manager, I have all events
enabled. There is only 1 message in S.A.QMGR.EVENT queue. I don't have a
tool
to interpret it (Paul's MQMONNTP doesn't seem to support 2.2.1, ), but all
my
other QMs have a single, QM startup event in that queue, so I am guessing
that's what it is. I don't see any other events (auth or otherwise) in that
queue.

I am running 2.2.1 EC09 on VAX/VMS.

--- Justin Fries [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
 David,

The System Management Guide for MQSeries v2.2.1 for OpenVMS VAX is
still available. First go to the main MQ library page:

  http://www-3.ibm.com/software/integration/mqfamily/library/manualsa/

Next, choose WebSphere MQ messaging previous platform specific
books from the first pull-down box to go to this URL:

http://www-3.ibm.com/software/integration/mqfamily/library/manualsa/manuals/
platspecprev.html

If you are looking for older versions of the other manuals, choose
WebSphere MQ messaging previous multiplatform books instead:

http://www-3.ibm.com/software/integration/mqfamily/library/manualsa/manuals/
crossprev.html

On the very first few pages of each manual in a section entitled
About this book is a list of releases to which it applies. For example,
the MQSeries Application Programming Guide (publication SC33-0807-09)
lists MQSeries for Digital OpenVMS as one of the v2 platforms to which it
 applies.

Authorization errors are normal in the same sense that
MQRC_NO_MSG_AVAILABLE is a normal error. MQ just returns a 2035 to the
application and takes no further action. By way of contrast, if MQ failed
to authorize a user because of an unexpected error in the product, or
because of a problem with the operating system, it would probably write
one or more error log messages and FDCs.

The best way to analyze authorization errors is to enable
authorization events on the queue manager using 'ALTER QMGR
AUTHOREV(ENABLED)' in runmqsc. The MQSeries Programmable System
Management book (available at the third URL given above) contains a
description of authorization events and how to interpret them. In
essence, every 2035 error will generate a message showing who failed
 authorization and for which object.

 Hello,

IBM in its infinite wisdom has removed the references to the VMS

 I am attempting a client connection to a VAX/VMS MQS QM (Rel 2.2.1). I

'AWERBUCH' and lowercase 'awerbuch' (my NT4 userid), to no avail. I am

BTW, this same connection setup is working fine on a Windows NT4 server,

Please CC: your reply to [EMAIL PROTECTED] as well; I receive only

(which is almost the same thing).

Ruzi,

If you are at WMQ 5.3 and will be using Microsoft clustering, contact the
IBM WMQ support center for the Beginners guide to setting up MSCS paper.
It's easier to install clustering from this paper than the WMQ Systems
Administration manual.

Also, if you will be using SSL channel security, call and talk to the
support center regarding the installation of the certificate.

HTH,

John Dawson

Ruzi, that is exactly how we do it over here.

We have 2 servers. The Hub QM primarily runs on ServerA at LocationA.
ServerB at LocationB has the another Hub queue manager that is inactive and
named exactly the same as the QM on ServerA at LocationA.

If ServerA crashes, Microsoft clustering / Veritas move the resources from
ServerA to ServerB. The IP address floats as well, so all your spoke
channels will go into retry during the failover and automatically start up
once the Hub QM is started up on ServerB.

There is no need for manual intervention.
There is no need for MQ clustering the hub QMs. Only one is ever active at a
time.
The only messages you lose are non persistence ones that happen to be on the
HubQM at the exact moment of failure.
The failover takes anywhere from 1 to 5 minutes.
When our MQSI boxes failover (seperate servers and Queue Managers), the
failover takes about 5 to 10 minutes, because it takes that much longer to
bring up the broker on the other side.

If you are prior to MQ5.3, you will need support pac MC74.

Subject: Failover in a Hub-spoke model???

Hi all,

Suppose the qmgrs QM1 and QM2 are clustered (both
full repositories) to serve as a hub. And the all the
other qmgrs (spokes) are connected to this hub (thru
channels to QM1). QM1 and QM2 are mirror images of
each other.

If something goes wrong with the QM1 it should
 preferably automatically fail-over to QM2. I don t
think there is an automatic fail-over in this case as
the channels from the spokes explicitly have to point
to QM2 requiring manual intervention. How do people
switch from QM1 to QM2?

How to achieve the automatic fail-over (from QM1 to
QM2)? Is the solution to use MS clustering (along with
the MQ clustering) on the hub?

Also, I remember reading a very well written document
recently on how MQSeries clustering works with MS
clustering, but I cannot find it. Does anyone have the
link?

Thanks for all the responses in advance,

Ruzi

Re: MC74....

2003-06-12 Thread Williams, Arlen
5.3 comes with the Microsoft Cluster Support so you don't need MC74. Check
chapter 13 in the System Administration Guide.

Hi all

Has anyone setup the MC74, Microsoft Cluster Support with MQ 5.3?!? In the
docs it only mentions up to 5.2, not sure if that is because the docs are
older of whether there is a problem with using it on MQ 5.3.

Thanks
Dan
