I am interesed, even if it does not 'fit'.
I try to collect as much information especially on hardware about MSX because
I don't want it to get lost.

I once had the MSX turbo-R datapack, but I have sold it two years ago.
Now I hate I have done this.

H... You mean another kind of word processor???
Especially for technical documentation or something like it?

I have an illegal version of Acrobat Editor laying somewhere...
It's not freeware for sure, but if you are interesed in this package,
I can sent it to you. It's a Windows 3.1 version. I don't know the
size, but it's not as large as the recent packages.

But I wouldn't trow Word away, it's one of the packages I like because
it's one of the best and simple to use package. Allthough it's from
Microsoft.

I use a self made upgrade using a 1MB SIMM 80ns (30 pins PC DRAM) and some

May I ask you if you could tell me what is the value of the pull up

The problem with the MSX turbo R is that the pull-up resistors in the engine (S1990)
have a too low resistance, which makes the current that high that even the low-bit
produced by an external large mapper will be pulled up. In theory this can damage both
the external mapper and the S1990. I don't think that Panasonic will produce a new
version of the S1990 to solve that problem. I don't think that Panasonic will produce
anything anymore for MSX. So we will have to live with these problems and work around

Available for almost any platform.

And it has unusable file-formats!

LaTeX outputs .dvi files (device independant) which can easily be converted to
PostScript. Which rules ofcourse.

Info for The Ultimate MSX FAQ!

1999-02-09 Thread Manuel Bilderbeek

Hi there!

I'm searching for some info for The Ultimate MSX FAQ! Read the FAQ to
find out what I need. At least I need info about some connectors (I
already got the RGB-Scart connector for the Sony 700), like:
  15 Descriptions of several connectors
   (under construction)
  + 15.1 Cassette connector
  + 15.2 Joystick connector
  + 15.3 Printer connector

I probably have these somewhere (in a book or somehting), but it would
be easier if someone sent me a textfile with the descriptions of these
(and others too, if possible, like the cartridge connector, etc...) This
info was once on the WWW page called "HwB connector menu" or somehting,
but that page dissappeared and I checked the MSX Mailinglist archive
too, but that's almost not do-able (hmm, bad English...)

Further, if you have any other info that could be put in The Ultimate
MSX FAQ: let me know!

Thanks!

Guys, you are leving your imagination to flight too fast! 8-) I think
that it is just a problem in the parameter parsing routine of MGINST.
I have a MegaSCSI but I haven´t slot expander... but I can try to
dissassemble the program. Just give me time.

Other interisting point: it sounds strange but not all DOS 2 ROMs are
valid for installing on MegaSCSI! I tried first to install the DOS 2

use Turbo-R DOS2 ROM you will not have problems (or at least, you
avoid one of the problems!)

The point here is:Does this external mapper support read-back? As far as I understand
many

don't support reading of their mappers (for example AddRam, if the circuit diagram of

Yes. In the S1990 the upper 3 bits are fixed to '1'. So the lower 5 bits
work. 5 bits gives you 2^5 = 32 pages, 32*16K = 512K.

Note that if you use an external mapper of a different size that the
internal mapper, you will get the problem of two mappers returning
different sizes when read. Although this probably will work correctly (it
did in my NMS8250), it might damage your MSX in the long run (although I'm
not sure, I'm not really good at hardware). But this problem is not related
to the S1990 problem, it will happen in any MSX.

Anyway, an internal expansion has the advantage that you have one more free
slot. Also some programs (mainly poorly cracked games) assume your RAM is
in slot 3.

If you want to play MegaROM games, use Ese SCC. I made one too and it works
very well. Cracked versions are often slower than originals, or have bugs
in them, but with ESE-SCC you can simply play the ROM file. In some cases
you have to hack the ROM a bit if the MegaROM type is not compatible with
the SCC, but this hacking is quite simple and can probably be automated.

The main advantage of AddRAM is that it's a normal MSX memory mapper. You
can use this memory for DOS2 or Memman programs (Compass, FastCopy).

No competition!

1999-02-09 Thread M.H.M. van den Broek

Hello Egor (and all readers in the mailinglist!)

I found out that not every participant is using the MSX-rating in the right
way.

For Example: I found twice the MSX-rating on one HomePage, so if there's
only ONE (1) HIT, the counter will get TWO (2)... So your site is always on
top!

This way, the list isn't as he should be, LEGAL USER are found at the END
of the list!

Is there something we can do about this MIS-USE!?

Disk variables!

1999-02-09 Thread Konami Man

Hi people! Konami Man returns again for asking for help (strange
huh?). This
time, concerning to the disk ROM work area (again!):

1. Can someone explain me the difference between variables HIGHMEM
(#F349)
and CLEAR (#F34B)?

2. Can I allocate memory in page 3 with the following method, without
causing
the system to be unstable?:

LD HL,(#F349)
LD BC,-256
ADD HL,BC
LD (#F349),HL ;HL to HL+255 = Allocated memory
RET

I used this method before, but exiting BASIC and returning DOS after
modifying HIGHMEM, for causing MSXDOS2.SYS to be reloaded in the
appropriate
address. Is this really necessary?

I need this information for making an improved version of
NestorAcentos
(hum... in fact, someone has interest on it?). Thanx in advance!

Egor (actually, anyone) can quickly check it. You can go the the page that
needs to be checked once, and then the counter on Egor's page *should* have
increased by one, and only one! Unfortunately, I can't check this hypothesis
now because my pages are down (booh! bad system management) for a few hours.
Then, Egor could just erase abusers from the list :) and everyone is happy

I have got a BERT interface, linked to two harddisks like this:

BERT - HD2 - HD1

HD1 is always online (produces the less sound and is the most reliable).
The second HD is used for backups only, so it's offline most of the time
(awful lot of noise and I have experienced quite some breakdowns with it,
although my former MK-interface might have been the cause of that).

I don't know the ID/terminator-settings, for if I change the ID-settings it
doesn't work at all so I keep them in their standard.

However, my previous config was:

MK (precessor of BERT) - HD2

If the interface needed a terminator on HD2, then my current configuration
could not possible work, for then BERT should assume HD1 not available for
HD2 has got a terminator.
So I have SCSI'd for quite some time without terminator, I guess.

An idea is cummin' up; might this non-availability of a terminator have
caused those errors which sometimes occurred and at last the breakdown of my
MK-interface???

API Control Blocks

NS> No please!!! I'm very happy with the FCB to FH update of DOS2,

I guess I shouldn't have used the name FCB; so, let's just say
a function "structure" or "record". An API Control Block (ACB)?

It wouldn't need to resemble old FCBs in any way. It could hold
the full file path and name, File Handle, attributes, process ID
  or ownership, priority codes, etc.

There are operating systems that use structures for interfacing
to the API. Instead of loading CPU registers with everything, a
pointer is used to reference a memory-based record.

This technique can provide backward compatibility. Old API calls
would operate on registers, new API calls could also access the
  extended functions record.

Bar Code Reader/ORACLE/GDOS slotexpander etc.....

1999-02-09 Thread Gabriel D.

Hi!

I have few questions regarding a BAR CODE READER from PHILIPS
(NMS-1170/20).
I got this thingie few days ago but unfortunately there was no software
or
manual with it. I wrote a small basic program to read the ports #18, #19
to
obtain the barcode data. It seems to read the barcodez coz the read data
is
equal to the one printed below the barcode, sometimes the last number
is missing
and I didn_t figured yet why?
I would like to get any information on how to make own bar codes.
The bar codes I had tested were only some numbers. Is it possible to
make a
barcode which contains characters A-Z?
I know that there are several programs available for this cartridge but
I havn_t
yet seen any of them. I remember that I had few weeks ago downloaded
some bar code
software from an FTP but it was corrupted, and now I can_t find this
FTP. It_s
probably gone.
So, can someone help me, by e-mailing me some software for it. I_ll put
it on my
web page so other people who have a barcode reader can download it too.
I know that there are 2 versions of the PHILIPS bar code reader the
NMS1170 and
1190. The 2nd one seems to use other ports. Is this the only difference?
I would like to get a program which makes it possible to make own bar
codes and
print them or save as graphic.

I found a piece of software called BARCODE.TSR in FUNET FTP.
It seems to be an MEMMAN TSR which makes possible to use the BCR in DOS2
and BASIC

It has some commands like:

_b:]
_h:]
_dir /w]
_dir /p]
_dir /h]
_dir >prn]
_dir /w >prn]
_dir /p/h]

_del b:*.*]
_tv]
_cmd tv]
_tk "Barcode/dos2"]
_cd \]
_ted]
_cd ..]
_cd \utils]
_cd \tsr]
_tp]
_print /c /d /i64]
_call system]
__system("autoexec")]
_basic]
_basic autoexec.bas]
_files,l]
_files "h:",l]
_files "b:",l]
_call chdir("\")]
_call ramdisk(0)]
_call ramdisk(4064)]
_call chdrv("b:")]
_call chdrv("h:")]
_call chdrv("a:")]
_cmd clear printbuf 0
_cmd clear ?buf 64]
_print attr$ fre ?buf

I_m wondering how it works? My guess is that by scanning a barcode a
specified
command is executed in dos2 or basic. But how to make the barcodes which
activate
the commands in this program?
Has anyone further info on who made this program or any manual for it?

Has someone got the developers package for memman tsr by MST? Is it
still
available somewhere?

And I would like to see a copy or scan of the NMS-1170/20 manual :-).

---
I received lately ORACLE V1.10 - the music program from FUZZY logic.
Does someone know if it works on a sony 700, without problems?
I_m just wondering if it_s the program that is buggy, coz it will not
start on my
sony700. It starts with loading. Prints some info about it installs
MIDAS debugger
and then returns to basic??
There is written something about ORACLE in one of the latests HNOSTAR
magazines, it
mentions at least SONY700 and ORACLE. Unfortunately I didn_t figure what
it says.
Can anyone translate it for me?
---
I was thinking about buying the GDOS 4x slotexpander. As far I know it
does use
the MSX_s internal PSU. I_m just wondering if my SONY700 will not blow
up with 4 cartridges connected to it? It seems to be working with a
PHILIPS NMS
8245 but has anyone used it with luck on a sony 700? My intention is to
connect an
FM-PAC, MSX-AUDIO, (IDE-INTERFACE), and a 4th card at once. Normally the
slot
expanders do have an external PSU connector so the computer isn_t
overloaded, but
this one seems to be ONLY powered by the MSX.
---
I got lately a program called MAGIC MUSIC MODULE PROFESSIONAL for
MSX-AUDIO.
Has someone got any MUSIC data for it? Please mail it to me:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

That_s all folks, hope to get some answers :-).

Right, ITF-14 (for big boxes containing more than one box of

for books, if I'm not wrong.

The exception is the EAN-8, for small products that cannot hold

Posible.
But couldn't be posible that the programme itself discard the last

accomplishing its function is discarded? Or does it happens that
sometimes the programme reads it and others not?

257? How did you cook up _that_ number? 255 or 256 or even 65536 :-) are

So what? Can't you write two robot-programs? :-)

Another thing crossed my mind: Why develop a special programming language
for the robot? The only reason for that could be that it's the only way
to get more 'programs' running in parallel on _one_ MSX. But: if we take
the game to JoyNet, as Shevek proposed, we only have to define the
rules of the game (e.g. how the long and short range radar function,
what happens if two robots want to get on the same playing field position)
and the interface (how does each player receive / send its move).
Then everyone can use his favorite programming language, and program his robot
in the way (s)he likes. It saves us the definition and implementation of a new
programming language and makes a killer app on JoyNet!

Would make a heck of a competition game at a fair (wow!)...

Re: Emulators...

Somehow I think, that maybe I'm only one, but I really don't like a
picture of future, where everybody is only looking pictures about funny
looking MSX computers in PC screen and trying emulators and laugh.

I think, that it is as pity as a picture of future, where grass, trees,
birds and all nature is only awailabble in virtual reality.

I know, that there are people, that are using emulators to make software
for MSX, and emulator users, that still buy MSX software (Ok, they are
MSX users for me), but there is plenty of more emulator users, that do not
do anything else, that asks 10 times "How to load .BAS files... I
forgotted" or "I downloaded SD-snatcher, but I can't get it to work. Can
somebody help me ?"

Emulators have also made a plenty of new MSX file standards, that are not
very usefull for real users. Like .ROM/.CAS/.TAP/.IMG (Yes I know,
that there are quite a good loaders now for most of them.) I think, that
it would be much easyer for MSX users, if all of these games would be just
packed and cracked files. Not so much questions and answers and only a bit
more work.

Anyway... I don't have anything more against emulators, but I'm not ever
going to support them by some special way, because that is not my job. (I
almoust died, when I saw a message "press F10 to exit to MS-Dos" I don't
remember where) If I think, that makeing a copy protection will help me to
sell some games for MSX users, then I make copy protection. (Anyway... I
don't)

So what did we learn ??? . nothing !

Yes, #1E contains: relative jump + "VOL_ID"+01+volume id. number.
In MS-DOS, #20 contains: number of sectors (4 bytes)+reserved

I allready have some my own musics made for it, but if anybody has some

Well, I mailed you about your software corner some days ago, I'm Iván from Spain
and I really enjoyed your demo with 3D mapped cubes and zooms on my Turbo R.
Now I'm planning to start programming some games, also for the GFX9000, but as far
as I program in Basic I'm thinking in small projects as a Scalextrix 2D racing
game. What I want is to offer myself to help you, specially in GFX to finish that
3D game you are doing because I CAN'T WAIT TO START MY ENGINE and play it for
hours. I could work for you freely (I don't want money or anything like that) if
it helps you to finish it faster, and perhaps We could also share ideas about
games because I think you would like to do an Ayrton Senna racing game for the MSX
(It's a dream I have for ages)

So, no more text and let's start coding... I can help you with GFX using MSX or PC
too, and you should ask Nestor Soriano for musics (he would be very very pleased)
so if you want to accept this offer just mail me and I'll start working. Bye

You are absolutely right I am afraid. I also come across some sites that
have software available that's still distributed by active groups. Normally
I just send an e-mail to them, and then those titles dissapear. But
sometimes this doesn't work.
If you take a look at my site, you can also find a lot of software there.
But you will not find any current titles there, only "old stuff". Of course
I can make mistakes, so I even put a notice on every screen that if someone
sees a program in my list that doesn't belong there, they should warn me...

If everyone had the same idea, then the new MSX-software wouldn't be found
on the net, and than probably those xtory CD's wouldn't be able to get them,
but I am afraid this is not the way it really is..

A shame indeed.

TP 3.3 / MCCE copyright issues

1999-02-09 Thread Alwin Henseler

Hi all,

Several people have mailed me about Turbo Pascal 3.3 and its
copyright issues. Instead of answering you all personally, I will
answer most of you by sending this statement to the mailing-list
('cause I know you're on it).

Most software by the former MSX Computer Club Enschede clearly states
a copyright in the software itself, and/or in documentation that goes
with it. Unless clearly stated otherwise by the copyright holder,
this is still valid. Just run the program or read the docs.

In most cases, something like '(c) MSX computerclub Enschede' is to
be read, but this doesn't exist anymore. Its successor, the CCE
(which is probably about to stop its activities soon too), has
strictly nothing to do with this (although we're largely the same
people).

These copyrights then simply fall back to the makers themselves.
I will give you an overview here (I hope I get this right):

Turbo Pascal 3.3
---

This is still copyrighted software. I have done some asking around a
while ago, and had some discussions about it.
Copyrights on MSX Turbo Pascal were originally with Borland, but this
is limited to the original CP/M version (3.0) only. Copyright holder
of the 3.3 version is the maker, Frits Hilderink.

I know of these 2 ways to get a copy, that will allow you to consider
yourself a legal user:
-Get someone who bought it him/herself once, to sell/give it to you,
which transfers the right to use it to you
-Order a copy of the final Millenium double-CD from the Dutch MSX
Computer & Club Magazine (http://www.database.nl/mccm). As far as I
know, this CD is still for sale, together with a set of the last
issues (I saw it on sale on the Zandvoort fair).

The latest version of TP 3.3, which calls itself version 3.3e, is
included on this CD (directory \software\copyrght\mcce, in the file
'tp-3-3.di2'). The permission to include TP 3.3 on this CD, and use
it when you own it, is limited to this CD only, so it's not legal to
copy it from there on, but strictly limited to those who have a
(legal) copy of this CD.

Tetravex / Minesweeper
-

These are both made by Olaf Benneker, and are being spread as
shareware. Copy these freely, and if you like these games, you can
show your appreciation by sending this guy a small donation, which
could make his day, and allow him to go out and have some beers on
your costs, and enjoy himself.
That won't make you poor, nor will it make him rich, but may give him
a fresh start to produce some other nice piece of software.
He also made Age8, for which the same goes as for TP 3.3, although I
think this was not included on the Millenium-CDs.

Logi-Bal
---
The maker of this game, Herman Post, has agreed to distribute this
game as postcard-ware. In other words, copy and use it freely, and if
you like it, show your appreciation by sending him a postcard, some
packs of beer or some pizza's, a Cadillac or such (a postcard showing
something of the place were you live, would be a good choice).
He agreed to let me prepare a distribution archive, and put it on the
web somewhere, I just didn't find the time yet.

For most or all of these things, the makers have since moved into
other activities, don't write any new MSX software anymore, and don't
feel like spending any important amount of time on it anymore
(neither do I).
If you sell it, buyers expect some added value for that:
-maybe a disk with a nice label
-a printed manual
-some help, or updates if bugs are found etc. etc.
This all takes time and effort, and if no-one is prepared anymore to
spend the amount of money you ask for it, what's the use then?

Given the current situation, my argument was this: with all these
FTP-sites full of Konami ROMs, and no time/willingness to actively
try and sell your software, why not make it available as freeware or
shareware then? If people are copying it anyway, you might as well
put it on the web yourself, so that they at least can get a decent
copy of the latest version.
Given a proper declaration about it, that way you're not obligated to
support it, you can just put it on a webpage, saying: "here it is,
use it if you like it, don't bother me about it, but you may send me
something nice to show your appreciation, if you like it".

Actually, there are even some companies who do this, even for
'commercial' software, like Konami's. I learned recently, there are
some companies who sold Sinclair ZX Spectrum software once (in large
numbers), that put some of these things on a website of there own, as
a way of saying: "look what nice things we made back in the
old days!".
Sinclair ZX Spectrum ROMs seem to be freely available too, and
OFFICIALLY okay-ed (by Amstrad in this case, who took over that
Spectrum stuff), for a similar reason.
So this is certainly not a 'can't do'.

The main argument against it was this: if you sold it to a number of
people for xx bucks, how are they gonna feel if

1999-02-09 Thread Patriek Lesparre

Great idea! I could make it, I guess, but I can't say when it will be
finished, since I don't have so much spare time. But please, send me exact
specifications on what the condition of an if-statement can be, and how
the radar can be used (or am I now asking just one question). Anyway, I
think it would be easy to make it hecto-multi-player (257 players at most,
simultaneously), by making use of joynet. I'm coding something at the

would be more fun, of course, but you can't always find a second player...

This is not the case.

The routine that was discussed (#4010) reads/writes a sector from a logical

The maximum physical disk size is an internal matter of the diskROM.

Re: IDE driver & documentation

1999-02-09 Thread Laurens Holst

There is a Z80 disassembler called Z80DIS which has some sort of "Artificial
intelligence". It ('till now succesfully) detects all kinds of areas like
Instructions, Byte data, Word data, Text data etcetera. But it has some
disadvantages. 1: It can only disassembleup to about 14k of code. After that
the memory is full and it'll break to Dos. 2: it doesn't support "illegal"
(read: unndocumented) z80-instructions.

But ummm... If someone has the Dos2 ROM (&RAM) disassembled (in a format so
that I can immediately assemble it again with gen80 without modifications)
could you please send it to me??? I ofcourse prefer a disassembled source
with Ins/Byte/Word/Text-areas...

eh.. you didn't understand me; DOS kernel uses both 4010 and the new entry
depending on the situation. When a disk is accessed for the first time (or
maybe when booting up the system) DOS can make a table with drivetypes:
4010 or new entry. To obtain the drivetype bootsector(=sector 0) can be
read by using normal 4010 even if it is drive >32MB.

Re: Bigger sector numbers

1999-02-09 Thread Alwin Henseler

Hi again (we keep trying),

> > My idea: why not indicate a big sector number with the highest bit of
> > the drive number (passed with A register)?
 (chop, chop...)

New calling convention:

(drive numbers: for BIOS-routine 0144h: 0=A, 1=B, etc.,
for driver entry 4010h: drivenumber = 'local' drive)

For the programmer:
- 'old' disk-I/O: as normal
- 'Big disk-I/O':

 LD A,drivenumber
 SET 7,A
 LD DE,pointer to 32-bit sectornumber
 CALL DSKIO

(other parameters as usual)

The pointer simply points somewhere in memory.
Although diskROM is switched into 4000-7FFFh during the call, I think
this pointer can point anywhere. For the BIOS-routine (0144 or
FFA7h), DOS can copy the contents at the pointer address to an
internal save address (in page 3-workspace, for example).
For calls from disk-system to driver via 4010h, this pointer will
already point somewhere else.
If diskROM is directly called at 4010h by an old program, pointer
will be 16-bit sector-number, and things will work as usual.
If called for 'Big I/O' directly from a (new) non-standard-obeying
proggie, only problem will occur if pointer address is in 4000-7FFF
range, but is no problem either, because this would be -illegal-
(directly calling 4010h for 'Big I/O', that is)

For the DSKIO entry (4010h) in the driver ROM:

  (check read or write)

  Bit 7 of A register:
if 0, higher bits of sector number = 0, or other 'base'
lower bits are in DE register
if 1, memory address (DE) contains big sector number

   (treat equally from here)

For those of you who worry about performance:
Suppose you need an extra of say, 20 Z80-instructions, with an
average time-consumption of say, 10 clockcycles, that would take
about 200/3.58e6 is about 0,06 milliseconds (@3.58 MHz).
(there go these 10 milliseconds access times...)
So don't complain about this, any single interslot-call consumes a
big multiple of that.
With an extremely fast driver (like one using a HDD with read-ahead
cache memory), this could even allow sector-reading from an
interrupt-routine (!!)
Probably not allowed, but this calling method method wouldn't stand
in the way.

So, this calling method is:

-100% Compatible: if you call an old driver with it, nothing will
happen, and an error gets returned. Any old calling methods have the
normal effect
-'Interslot-call proof'
-Fast
-Easy for programmers

I challenge you to come up with a better way.

Of course. You misunderstood me, I don't wanted to say "how to determine

Emulators: just my opinion.

1999-02-09 Thread Nestor Soriano

I will not make judgements about if emulators users are "true" MSX users or
not, I will only tell my opinion. Well, the fact is that I'm in the MSX
world since year 86, and I can say this: the feeling I have when using real
MSX is not present when using any emulator. I mean, I can't release of my
mind the idea that I'm not using my MSX but a bad copy. So, even if they
can become perfect some day, I don't like emulators. If other people likes,
no problemo of course.

Someone says that real MSX computers will be all broken some day. Well, we
ourselves must also die some day, but we don't mind about this, right? We
just live our life.

Well, now you met another one. :-) I've been usiing emulators because my MSX is
broken for 2 years, and now i'm buying a new MSX with things i never thought i
could have someday, when i had my MSX2.0 working. I had forgotten MSX after my msx
broke, and I come back to Msx world when i saw that CJS emulator 0.2b was
released.
You can't imagine how happy I was at that time. I was in home again. :-) So MSX
emulators brought me back. Without them i probably woulsn't buying a new MSX now.
In this time using emulators, i bought future disks magazines, printed Msx
magazines and Msx's CD's, altough Future disk doesn't work very well in emulators.
I don't think that people with msx emulators doesn't buy/use/produce softwares
(i'm here to prove it). And i fully agree with what was mentioned, even my new MSX
will die someday, so i'll only buy softares that work with emulators, they may not
work very well due to emulator bugs, but it's necessary that they aren't
copy-protected, because in this case i could at least wait for a better version of
thee emulator to run them.

Ok, don't get me wrong... My goal is not to make proggrams, that are not
usabble in emulators. This thing I said was just speculation of my mind.

Anyway one thing, that I don't belive, that Any MSX2 emulator has is a
correct VDP speed... So if we make a proggram, that waits lineinterrupt,
starts a massive copy, waits few scanning lines and terminates copy
operation before it was completed and then calculates, how much it copyed
then... I bet there is no emulator, that can make this right.

(Hey I have only once heard about software, that changed color of box

that right ?)

The real MSX users do it. They prefer their real MSX than an
emulator. An emulator is just for test, for experimenting, or maybe help
(come on... The BrMSX debugger helps me a lot!).

> But the important point is that the number of real MSX usres decreases
> due to the emulator.

Many emulators users prefer emulators for comodity. 'Cause they
don't need to build software, there are tons of ROMs anywere; getting a TV
to put in their MSX is very complicated to do; they don't want to spend
their time searching for a 3 1/2 drive ["my pc has one 1.44 here! why
searching for another???"]; they can spend the money of MSX with their PC
["nah! pc is better than msx! pc can run msx emulator! emulator is equal
to real machine! i don't need real machine!"].
That's a common situation here in Brazil.

> A lot of real MSX users putted their MSXs into somewhere

Yeah, there are these, too. But these guys don't like MSX anymore.
They don't use real MSX. But they don't use emulators too.

> I've never seen
> a guy who buy softwares for MSX emulator.

That's another problem. Emulator users love getting free ROMs in
the Internet. So they think "Why would I pay for a MSX software if I can
find thousand games for free on Internet?".

What problem do you mean?
In general #4010 is only called by DOS kernel. In all other cases when
your own program makes use of #4010, you know what size the disk you want
to access has. So if it is >32MB, use the 'new diskio' otherwise use
#4010.

Remark: you can always read the bootsector of a disk with #4010. Useful
to determine its size. This can also be done by DOS3 kernel.
(Like I've mentioned before: current DOS2 fetches the #4010 address from a
kind of diskparametertable. (I'm not 100% sure of this))

I totally agree. I only wanted to be sure that FAT16 is theoretically not
necessary for >32MB partitions.

Like some people said before; 24bit sectornumber will be enough to fit all our
needs for the coming decades ;-) (8GB partitions)

I agree completely.

With the above example, the transmitted information depends not on
the state of a signal at certain times, but on the TRANSITIONS of the
state of the signal(s). The receiver can determine a transition by
comparing the state of a signal with a previous state. But consider
this:

Suppose the sender would toggle the signal, sending a (whatever),
toggle it again, sending another (whatever). And then suppose the
receiver would miss these 2 transitions somehow, and see no change.
If sender and receiver work at different speeds, or check the signals
at different times, this would be easy.

To prevent this, they might: check the state of a signal against
another signal (data/clock/changing function, doesn't matter). That
would be a SYNCHRONOUS communication method / protocol.
I assume that's not the idea here.

Another way might be, to use such a timing, that the receiver(s) will
ALWAYS have enough time to check the status of the signal(s). That
would use a fixed timing when sending, and not using another
signal, and therefore be a Asynchronous method. I assume that's not
meant here either.

Yet another method would be, to signal the sender a return signal,
that a sent 'unit' of information (here: probably 1 bit) was
received. In this case: using the "ACK" signal. That would again be a
SYNCHRONOUS method (every transfer synchronised with the returned
acknowledge). It seems that's the idea with JoyNet.

>
> Since the timing information is part of the communicated message,
> the sender and receiver need not be synchronized.

The matter synchronous <-> aynchronous has NOTHING to do with the
sender and receiver being synchronised somehow, when you mean they
would be 'working' on the same thing, at the same time. That need
ofcourse not be the case, but the protocol could be synchronous
nevertheless.

But they ALWAYS have to be synchronised with the SIGNAL somehow. The
receiver would be synchronised at the point in time, that it has
determined the start of a particular unit of information. In this
case, upon seeing a transition on one of these bit lines, that would
make it synchronised with the bit-stream, but still not tell the
receiver where a 'pack' of information started. That might be when
receiving a special signal (here: not available), or when using a
sort of 'Escape sequence' (like toggling the 2 data lines above
simultaniously, or receiving a special bit sequence, that does not
occur in normal data).

The sender also has to be synchronised with the transmitter. For
instance, by only sending when any receiver(s) is known to be ready.
Or, when assuming receivers are always ready, such synchronisation
would be immediate.

In this case, the transmitter would be synchronised with the
receiver, at the moment it receives acknowledgement that the receiver
is ready for (a) new bit(s). Here, when the return "ACK" is seen,
indicating: "got it, send next bits now".

> I just strongly recommend an delay-insensitive asynchronous
> communication protocol, because that will give far less trouble. For
> example, it is insensitive to cable lengths and it will run at any

I agree, that would make the practical use of it much more easy, and
'robust'. Eehh, delay insensitive -> not using some fixed timing ->
thus a SYNCHRONOUS (sorry ;-) method / protocol. NOT meaning the
computers involved need to do things simultanious...

For any applications, the use (protocol) depends HIGHLY on what you
use it for:

If it's *only* data-transfer (moving the contents of a harddisk to
another computer or such), you'd best use either as many signals
of a joystick port as possible, allowing maximum tranfer speed, OR
use as few signals, you feel you need for programming it, to make a
connection cable as simple as possible.

The message size depends on how many errors occur (I hope 'few'), and
the overhead it would give to respond on this with resending a block.
For data-transfer, I would take anything convenient, that is far
bigger than the checksum itself, so that the overhead is small. For
instance, with a CRC-32 (4 bytes), take >>4 byte blocks, like a
couple of KB.'s.

Well, if you want, I can find 4 u a real MSX 4 sale. It isn't easy,

Ademir Carchano, in Brazil, has NEW MSX 2/2+ motherboards 4 sale.
Although, he is finishing a new motherboard, the ACE001. U can place it
into a PC case, connect it to a PC power source, a PC keyboard, a PC mouse,
a VGA monitor, uses 1 and 4 Mb SIMM 30 pin memories... But it is a new MSX.
Well, I dislike the PC peripherals, but unfortunately there isn't enough
MSX keyboards, MSX monitors and MSX mouses 4 sale. So...

Leonardo Padial, in Spain, are finishing his MMSX project, but I
don't have enough information about the MMSX (does anyone can tell 4 us
about the project? I would be very interested).

And, if my T-R will be broken in the next 10 years...
When it'll be broken, I think about it. Maybe in 2010, 2020...

Well, only one question (please only think about it, don't worry
sending me a mail to answer): Do u prefer a MSX emulator or the real MSX?

Bye!

The easiest way of determining cluster size is to look into

Nah! It is not a secure test! It works with emulators that patch
the DiskROM. For example, BrMSX don't patch DiskROM, so this test fail.
But there IS a secure routine to test if the program are running under an

Right now, the most safe way to make sure that a program will not

Hi All,

I don't know why all of you are so negative! The suggestion of Arjan
may not be as bad as it seems.

Perhaps now is NOT the right time to EXTEND the emulator with 'new'
features. Perhaps NOW is is the time to build in everything that is
known to MSX today (GFX9000, Moonsound, Videodigitiser, Hard disk,
...). And after that... who knows?

To get back to the suggestion of Arjan: My reason NOT to program on PC
(at least not in my spare time ;-) ), is that I know my MSX 'through
and through' and can program something very quickly on it. As I
believe my MSX won't last forever (I do HOPE it does), there will come
a time I can only access my MSX via PC. If that MSX has more
possibilities, then. WHY THE NOT.

I must however, insist that the current hardware is emulated first
(where is that HARD DISK emulation :-( )!

You have to contact Hans Oranje, but I'm afraid I don't have his e-mail
address. :( Someone please tell us what his address is!

About the costs, you just need a EPROM replacement which AFAIK is NLG 25,-.

With Novaxis goto setup be pressing DELETE on reboot or
startup of the computer.
in this screen you can change host-ID to 4 - 7. When in
Basic you can use this basic command:

call sethostid(var)
the var must then contain the value 4 to 7 and can be a
varibele or just a number.
