Re: Table and indexes

2004-08-07 Thread Veysel Harun Sahin
A PRIMARY KEY is a unique KEY where all key columns
must be defined as NOT NULL. If they are not
explicitly declared as NOT NULL, MySQL will declare
them so implicitly (and silently). A table can have
only one PRIMARY KEY. If you don't have a PRIMARY KEY
and an application asks for the PRIMARY KEY in your
tables, MySQL returns the first UNIQUE index that has
no NULL columns as the PRIMARY KEY. (MySQL Manual |
14.2.6 CREATE TABLE Syntax)

confused about character sets in mysql 4.1.3b

2004-07-16 Thread Veysel Harun Sahin
Hello list,

I have already installed mysql 4.1.3 beta to my
windows xp. I set default-caharacter-set to latin5 and
default-collation to latin5_turkish_ci in my.ini
configuration file. Because I want latin5 my default
character set. Then I restarted mysql service and
looked up character set and collation variables. And
get cofused.

- In WinMySQLAdmin1.4 variables tab I see the
following results:

character_set_client = latin1
character_set_connection = latin1
character_set_database = latin5
character_set_results = latin1
character_set_server = latin5
character_set_system = utf8

collation_connection = latin1_swedish_ci
collation_database = latin5_turkish_ci
collation_server = latin5_turkish_ci

- When i execute show variables like '%character%'
and show variables like '%collation%' queries from
the command line i get the same results.

- When i execute the same queries from phpMyAdmin
2.5.7-pl1 i get different result set.

character set client = latin5
character set connection = latin5
character set database = latin5
character set results = latin5
character set server = latin5
character set system = utf8

collation connection = latin5_turkish_ci
collation database = latin5_turkish_ci
collation server = latin5_turkish_ci

First off all I could not understand why the results
are different. And second, does not all my variables
have to be latin5 and latin5_turkish_ci because of the
configuration I have done in my.ini file?

Thanks in advace.

Harun

select distinct from two columns

Hello,

The two columns of my table are name and city. I am trying to do a list which contains
only the different names. This can be done this by distinct keyword. But all the same
names which have different cities also have to be included in my list. So I can not do
this with a distinct keyword.

Any ideas?

Re: Fw: Server-Client

2003-07-23 Thread Veysel Harun Sahin
I could not understand what you try to do. But generally mysql runs on a
server machine and the clients connect to it. Every client program you
write can connect to mysql server seperately. If you want and need you
can also write a server program too. But you have to be more clear about
your problems and purpose to get a good answer.

This is a UNION query. For example:

UNION
Select owner as Joined_column from company where company_id = 1;

Re: Question: using Visual Studio.NET

2003-07-16 Thread Veysel Harun Sahin
You can access a mysql database within VS.Net through odbc. To do this
you have install myodbc. You can get this from mysql website. After
installing myodbc you have to create a new datasource. Then you can
connect to mysql with the help of adodb object in vs.net. I have never
tried to connect mysql within access. But I think so you can do this too
through odbc. If you need I can send you samples codes too.

I can only say that if you follow the link below and read the
explanations on that page and also follow the related links you can find
answers to Alex's problems.

[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Yes, adding a lot of indexes makes queries faster. But makes
inserts/deletes/updates slower.
Alex's problem is NOT that his/her queries takes too long, the problem
is that optimize takes too long. Which is something completely
different.

Does anyone know of an easy way using SQL to extract all weekly sums of
a field?
Like:

week 1: sum of tips for that week
week 2: sum of tips for that week
week 3: sum of tips for that week
week 4: sum of tips for that week
week 5: sum of tips for that week
I can do them one week per query (obviously) but would like one query
that will spit them all out, one after the other.

Re: query: if exists UPDATE else INSERT?

2003-07-13 Thread Veysel Harun Sahin

Try this:

set @w = 0;
select @w := value from table where id = 20030713;
delete from table where id = 20030713;
insert into table values (20030713, @w + 20);

[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Hello,

I'm looking for a solution to write a sql query that inserts a set of data if the data id is not present and otherwise update the set.

I have a table with id (char(8)) and value (int(8))

To make my problem clear:

There is no set with id = 20030713
insert into table values (20030713,10);
The next set is (20030713,20) but as a set with 20030713 is already available I
like to have
update table set value = value + 20 where id = 20030713
I tried the replace command but I fail to get the value = value + 20 working.

The problem is that the query is called from within a programm that only can call a query but not get some data back.

Also a solution in form of

mysql
$w = select value from table where id = 20030713;
delete from table where id = 20030713;
insert into table values (20030713,$w + 20);
mysql
would be fine but I think that $w = part isn't working with mysql ;-)

Its no solution to simply make the table accept duplicate entries for id and make a sum(value) group by id because I think it will be a performace problem if I have thousends of datasets a day - If I'm wrong let me know.

Any hints how to manage this??

Re: select by weekly SUM

2003-07-13 Thread Veysel Harun Sahin
Then you can use the week function of mysql in group by clause like this:

SELECT sum(tips) FROM mytable GROUP BY WEEK(date);

This will group your records week by week then will sum each week's
tips. Also you can look at
http://www.mysql.com/doc/en/Date_and_time_functions.html for the date
and time functions in mysql.

Sorry, I wasn't clear. I have ONLY daily data, not weekly, but I want

These are the fields I have:

date DATE NOT NULL,
hours_worked DECIMAL(5,2),
no_of_deliveries TINYINT(1) UNSIGNED,
total_tips DECIMAL(5,2),
gas_used TINYINT(1) UNSIGNED,
notes TEXT
There is no week field.

So, I have to compute 'week by adding together sum(tips) for 7
consecutive days. Any suggestions how I can extract many consecutive
weekly sums?

Re: problems with farsi sorting!!

2003-06-25 Thread Veysel Harun Sahin
You can change your charset by adding a line in your mysql configuration
file like this.

   default-character-set = cp1256

Here cp1256 means that mysql will use Windows Arabic character set. I
don't know the difference between farsi and arabic charsets. And also I
don't know if mysql has a farsi charset support. But if you are able to
use arabic charset you can set your charset to cp1256 like above. You
can also take a look at
http://www.mysql.com/doc/en/Charset-charsets.html page. Here you can get
info about mysql charsets.

Re: Maximum table size

2003-06-02 Thread Veysel Harun Sahin
If your os permits, mysql can handle file sizes up to terabytes. You
don't need to spawn your tables. But you have to be careful when
creating your myisam tables. If you don't specify your table size limit
with the max_rows option when creating table mysql will create a table
with 4G file size limit. If you use innodb you can setup auto extend
feature, so you don't need to control your table size, if it reach its
maximum innodb will automatically extend its file size.

As i understand it mysql maintains a file for every table created. Does it

sql select from question

2003-02-24 Thread Veysel Harun Sahin
Hello list,

I want to select all the columns in a table except one column. Can I do
this without writing all the column names to the query? For example
assume that I have table with the name table1 and there are 50 columns
in table1 with the names col1, col2, col3.col50. To be able to
select all the columns except col35 I have to write a query like SELECT
col1, col2, , col34, col36, col50 FROM table1. Is there a
simpler way to do this for example using not operator with the column
name col35?

Thanks.

Depending on the application language it might be easier to post-process:

   $result = mysql_query('SELECT * FROM mytable');
   while ($row = mysql_fetch_array($result, MYSQL_NUM)) {

Database 3 is a reference file that ties them together - so I would have to

this would do an MD5 hash

Is this feature not available in Windows? It appears that max version of

4G file limit

Yes, setting up MAX_ROWS parameter is the right solution i think. I have
tried it with alter table command and it seems to work.

Thanks all.

[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Hi,
Even if you have large file support you must tell mysql to use long
pointers when creating the table. The way to accomplih this is to add
the MAX_ROWS table option when creating the table, just make it a
really large number like 50. You can verify this effect by
BEFORE makeing the change, use SHOW TABLE STATUS LIKE 'MYTABLE' .
Then look at the max_data_length column. Before you change it will be
this 4294967295 (4.0G), after your change it will be something like
1099511627775.

Yes, the error message does not make sense. I have not had time to
build a test case to get to MySQL so they can give us a better error
message.

See this manual page for info on create table.
http://www.mysql.com/doc/C/R/CREATE_TABLE.html

You can just alter the table with this option.

Hope this helps,

not. Generally I prefer the standart openbsd packages. You can download and use

Also if you have problems installing openbsd packages you can read this manual:

This sounds like a delete parentless children and childless parents
question.  Turning to my handy copy of MySQL Cookbook which I just happen
to have nearby :-) I see the following under Identifying and Removing
Unattached Records (pp668-669), where the _head and _item are the parent
and child tables that correspond to your table1 and table2:

---
To  use  a  multiple-table  DELETE  statement  for  removing
unmatched records, just take the SELECT statement  that  you
use  to identify those records and replace the stuff leading
up to the FROM keyword with DELETE tbl_name.   For  example,
the  SELECT  that  identifies  childless  parents looks like
this:

      SELECT swdist_head.dist_id AS 'unmatched swdist_head IDs'
      FROM swdist_head LEFT JOIN swdist_item
          ON swdist_head.dist_id = swdist_item.dist_id
      WHERE swdist_item.dist_id IS NULL;

The corresponding DELETE looks like this:

      DELETE swdist_head
      FROM swdist_head LEFT JOIN swdist_item
          ON swdist_head.dist_id = swdist_item.dist_id
      WHERE swdist_item.dist_id IS NULL;

Conversely, the query to identify parentless children is  as
follows:

      SELECT swdist_item.dist_id AS 'unmatched swdist_item IDs'
      FROM swdist_item LEFT JOIN swdist_head
          ON swdist_item.dist_id = swdist_head.dist_id
      WHERE swdist_head.dist_id IS NULL;

And the corresponding DELETE statement removes them:

      DELETE swdist_item
      FROM swdist_item LEFT JOIN swdist_head
          ON swdist_item.dist_id = swdist_head.dist_id
      WHERE swdist_head.dist_id IS NULL;
---

This requires that you have MySQL 4.x, because 3.x doesn't support
multiple-table DELETE.  For 3.x, you must write a program that identifies
the unattached records and generates the appropriate statements to delete
them.  (The code for this is in the Cookbook, too; you can get it at
the book's web site.)

I previously posted the following query, which hasn't resulted in any responses,
so I'll try again...

Date: Sun, 1 Dec 2002 02:31:59 -0600 (CST)

I found the following RPMs:

   perl-DBD-MySQL-1.2215-1.i386.rpm
   perl-DBI-1.14-10.i386.rpm

But they aren't good enough:

rpm -ivh MySQL*3.23.53a-1.i386.rpm  perl-DBD-MySQL-1.2215-1.i386.rpm perl-DBI-1.
14-10.i386.rpm
error: failed dependencies:
   MySQL-DBI-perl-bin is needed by MySQL-bench-3.23.53a-1

Just what the hell is the person looking for that packaged the bench RPM?

It would be nice if the MySQL page that has the Linux RPMs would list the
dependencies and where to get the RPMs that it needs. But, nope, nada.

Until I can find that particular RPM, the bench RPM will be left off the
list.

I'm attempting to install the following Linux RPMs:

MySQL-3.23.53a-1.i386.rpmMySQL-client-3.23.53a-1.i386.rpm
MySQL-Max-3.23.53a-1.i386.rpmMySQL-devel-3.23.53a-1.i386.rpm
MySQL-bench-3.23.53a-1.i386.rpm  MySQL-shared-3.23.53a-1.i386.rpm

When I do so I get the following error:

rpm -ivh MySQL*3.23.53a-1.i386.rpm
error: failed dependencies:
  MySQL-DBI-perl-bin is needed by MySQL-bench-3.23.53a-1

The only Perl DBI module on the MySQL website is the DBI-1.18.tar.gz tarball.

Where is said RPM located?

Thanks for any pointers to the location.

order by clause with latin5 character set on binary fields

2002-12-03 Thread Veysel Harun Sahin
Hello,

I use mySQL 3.23.49 with latin5 character set. At some of my tables I
use binary fields. At normal fields order by clause returns true sorting
but at binary fields I get wrong results. Is there any way to correct
this problem or have to I use normal fields instead of binary and use
BINARY operator at comparisions?

Thanks.

Instead you can use ado or tmysqlconnection from

 Thanx Veysel for your concern; but unfortunately this did not help me.
 Creating functions is independent of tables or databases privileges.
 Is there a solution one can authorize using created functions?
