syntax for strings in REQUIRE ISSUER / REQUIRE SUBJECT

2011-03-19 Thread John Fawcett
I cannot seem to get SSL connections working using the REQUIRE ISSUER or
REQUIRE SUBJECT clauses.

I have a mysql working with ssl. I can connect from the client host to
the server using ssl, where the user has been setup using:

GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON x.* TO ''@'ipaddress' IDENTIFIED BY
'xx'   REQUIRE X509;

and the connection from client is done by

mysql -h xxx -u xx -p --ssl-ca=/etc/mysql/ca-cert.pem
--ssl-key=/etc/mysql/client-key.pem --ssl-cert=/etc/mysql/client-cert.pem

However, the moment I try to restrict access to certs with specific
issuer or subject I cannot connect

GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON x.* TO ''@'ipaddress' IDENTIFIED BY
'xx' REQUIRE ISSUER 'C=IT, ST=Como, L=Erba, O=erba.tv, OU=erba.tv,
CN=erba.tv/emailAddress=postmas...@erba.tv';

I have tried various permutations of specifying issuer string, i.e.
C=IT, ST=Como, L=Erba, O=erba.tv, OU=erba.tv,
CN=erba.tv/emailAddress=postmas...@erba.tv

C=IT, ST=Como, L=Erba, O=erba.tv, OU=erba.tv, CN=erba.tv
C=IT/ST=Como/L=Erba/O=erba.tv/OU=erba.tv/CN=erba.tv/emailAddress=postmas...@erba.tv
C=IT/ST=Como/L=Erba/O=erba.tv/OU=erba.tv/CN=erba.tv

but none seem to work (after flushing privileges each time). The first
of these values is what is given by the command:

openssl x509 -in /etc/mysql/client-cert.pem -noout -text

The message I get is on trying to connect is:
ERROR 1045 (28000): Access denied for user ''@'ipaddress' (using
password: YES)

The basics of ssl are obviously working, but for some reason the ISSUER
check is not working. How can I debug that futher?

hmm.. but I think you might have problems getting support from

this.. (we know the reason why.. :) )

 I apologize for asking this question.
 I am somewhat confused by Microsoft's Licensing and I personally
 can not
 justify to senior management why
 MS SQL should be procured instead of procuring software more
urgent
 requirements.
 I had the not so bright idea that maybe a MS SQL emulator or
 compatibility mode existed for/in MySQL.
 Does such a beast exist?

 In particular, I wanted to use MySQL as backend database for MS
 Project
 Server and Sharepoint,
 and other applications that use MS SQL as their backend database.
 Again, I apologize for asking this question. I could not figure
out
 the
 correct string to search for
 such software.

 thank you

 You have a point.
 But, facebook makes NO money at this time, has about 400 employees

 nuts. Maybe I am too old with 30, but I have never even been to

 It will be interesting to see if facebook, youtube and alike

With a perfect business plan I bet it will.

 Just because 50 million people know a website, it does not mean it

Yes, I agree but once this 50 million visits the website and it would be

Subject: determining if tables are being used

2007-06-12 Thread Sean Kelly

Keith,

The definitive way is to turn on the query log and watch it for a few days
or weeks.

In your my.cnf under [mysqld] add the line:

log=mysql-query

Then restart your server.

In your server's data directory (e.g. /usr/local/mysql/data/), there will
now be a log file called mysql-query.log. After some time there may be one
for each day, week or size interval.

This file, 'mysql-query.log' shows all queries and can be opened, cat'd,
tailed, etc.

Using the query log impacts performance, comment out the line and restart
mysql when you're done.

Link to the mysql doc:

MySQL 5.0.18-standard - Wrong record (sorry, I cannot find a better subject)

2006-04-04 Thread Patrick Herber
Hello!

I'm using MySQL 5.0.18-standard Server on a Linux SuSE 10 Server and I've
got following problem:

I have a table with the followign structure

+-+--+--+-+---+-
---+
| Field   | Type | Null | Key | Default   | Extra
|
+-+--+--+-+---+-
---+
| STEP_ID | int(10) unsigned | NO   | PRI | NULL  |
auto_increment |
| INVOICE_ID  | int(10) unsigned | NO   | MUL | 0 |
|
| STEP_TYPE_ID| smallint(5) unsigned | NO   | MUL | 0 |
|
  (some other field) ...
+-+--+--+-+---+-
---+

When I execute following statement

SELECT STEP_ID, INVOICE_ID, STEP_TYPE_ID FROM step WHERE
INVOICE_ID=17081598;

I get this result

+--++--+
| STEP_ID  | INVOICE_ID | STEP_TYPE_ID |
+--++--+
| 47870211 |   17081598 |1 |
| 47870212 |   17081598 |4 |
| 47870214 |   17081599 |1 |  !!
+--++--+

As you can see there is a record with INVOICE_ID=17081599.

Please note that if I ask for

mysql SELECT STEP_ID, INVOICE_ID, STEP_TYPE_ID FROM step WHERE
INVOICE_ID=17081599;

I also receive that record:

+--++--+
| STEP_ID  | INVOICE_ID | STEP_TYPE_ID |
+--++--+
| 47870214 |   17081599 |1 |
| 47870215 |   17081599 |4 |
| 47870216 |   17081599 |3 |
+--++--+

Interesting is also that no record with STEP_ID=47870213 is visible.
I wrote visible and not present, because if I try to insert a new Record
with this PK I get this error

mysql INSERT INTO step (STEP_ID, INVOICE_ID, STEP_TYPE_ID) VALUES
(47870213, 17081598, 3);
ERROR 1062 (23000): Duplicate entry '47870213' for key 1

However:

mysql SELECT * FROM step where STEP_ID=47870213;
Empty set (0.00 sec)

The problem for me is that I also collect a statistic from this come out
wrong, because when I ask for

mysql SELECT COUNT(*) FROM step WHERE INVOICE_ID IN (17081598,17081599) AND
STEP_TYPE_ID=1;

I get, instead of 2:

+--+
| COUNT(*) |
+--+
|3 |
+--+

Can you please tell me what the problem could be and what can I do to solve
it?

Thanks a lot!

Regards,
Patrick

Thanks Martijn for you prompt answer!

 Do you have indices on INVOICE_ID?

Yes (KEY `IDX_step1` (`INVOICE_ID`))

 If so, try dropping it and recreating it?

OK, I will do it (I will have to wait until this week-end to do it (= the
table is a bit big (47 mio records) and I cannot stop the service during the
week) and tell you the results.

Shall also perform a REPAIR TABLE?

  | 47870214 |   17081599 |1 |  !!
  +--++--+

  As you can see there is a record with INVOICE_ID=17081599.

  Please note that if I ask for

  mysql SELECT STEP_ID, INVOICE_ID, STEP_TYPE_ID FROM step WHERE
  INVOICE_ID=17081599;

  I also receive that record:

  +--++--+
  | STEP_ID  | INVOICE_ID | STEP_TYPE_ID |
  +--++--+
  | 47870214 |   17081599 |1 |
  | 47870215 |   17081599 |4 |
  | 47870216 |   17081599 |3 |
  +--++--+

  Interesting is also that no record with STEP_ID=47870213 is visible.
  I wrote visible and not present, because if I try to
 insert a new
 Record
  with this PK I get this error

  mysql INSERT INTO step (STEP_ID, INVOICE_ID, STEP_TYPE_ID) VALUES
  (47870213, 17081598, 3);
  ERROR 1062 (23000): Duplicate entry '47870213' for key 1

  However:

  mysql SELECT * FROM step where STEP_ID=47870213;
  Empty set (0.00 sec)

  The problem for me is that I also collect a statistic from
 this come
  out wrong, because when I ask for

  mysql SELECT COUNT(*) FROM step WHERE INVOICE_ID IN
  mysql (17081598,17081599)
 AND
  STEP_TYPE_ID=1;

  I get, instead of 2:

  +--+
  | COUNT(*) |
  +--+
  |3 |
  +--+

  Can you please tell me what the problem could be and what
 can I do to
 solve
  it?

 Corrupt index?

 Do you have indices on INVOICE_ID? If so, try dropping it and
 recreating it?

2006-01-11 Thread Gordon Bruce
One huge problem with this approach. The new table doesn't have any of
the indexes that were present in the previous table. You may be better
off to build a script that renames the current tables followed with the
full CREATE TABLE statement(s).

Do a SHOW CREATE TABLE current table;

Then take that output and put it in a script

RENAME TABLE current_table TO new_table_name;
CREATE TABLE .

ON 5.0 you can use PREPARED STATEMENTS if you want to control the new
table names. See

13.7. SQL Syntax for Prepared Statements

Beginning with MySQL 4.1.3, an alternative interface to prepared
statements is available: SQL syntax for prepared statements. This
interface is not as efficient as using the binary protocol through a
prepared statement API, but requires no programming because it is
available directly at the SQL level:

 Is there an easy way with SQL to create a new table based on the

I believe CREATE TABLE newtbl SELECT blah... is what you're after :
http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/create-table.html
FTFM :
 You can create one table from another by adding a SELECT statement at
the end of the CREATE TABLE statement:

CREATE TABLE new_tbl SELECT * FROM orig_tbl;

Subject: Postcode Proximity Search?
Message-Id: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi I'm just starting out with PHP and MySQL

My database has a postcode column and I want to be able to run a search
(using a part of full postcode) to return results in order of proximity
within a given range.

If anyone could point to a decent tutorial / resource, or give me any
advice or hints I would greatly appreciate it.

Pete.

Sure, you can do that. First, go to the US Census Bureau's website
and downloadthe file 'places.zip' (Download places.zip from
http://www.census.gov/tiger/tms/gazetteer/places2k.zip)..  This file
contains the zip codes, latitutude and longitudes of cities in the
United States. One thing you should be aware of is that the zip codes
in this file do not fully correspond to the US Postal Service codes,
but they are darn close. If 'darn close' is not good enough, you can
pay the USPS to give you their current zip codes. The USCB files are
free to all, though.

Next, study the formula at
http://www.meridianworlddata.com/Distance-Calculation.asp; (this site
is very well-written). The Great Cirlce forumla is the one you
want, but read the whole thing.

Now, set up a script that implements the formula and the information
contained in places.zip.

You said you wanted to return results in order of proximity within a
given range. If, by that, you mean relative to a number you feed the
query script, the above works great.
If, however, by some off chance, you have a certain fixed point that
you want all your ordering to be based around, say New Orleans, then
you could simply pipe the entire places.zip file through a calculation
and stick the results in the database. I'm guessing, though, that is
not what you had in mind.

One last note: The Great Circle formula assumes a smooth, perfectly
round earth. So, if you go up Pike's Peak and down again, you add 5.3
miles to you trip, but the Great Circle formula will not reflect this
because altitude is not used.

Hope this helps!

May not solve the replication issue, but if this is a 4GByte server that is
dedicated to MySQL (ie you aren't using memory for anything else, like..
say... a web server or something) and the MySQL server is dedicated to
InnoDB which the other memory settings seem to support - then you need to
revise this.

If the system is running a 64 bit OS you should be running a 64 bit binary
and you should set the InnoDB Buffer pool to closer to 3200M... Additional
memory of something like 256M or maybe even 512M would work well...

If the system is running a 32 bit operating system (with a PIV it probably
is 32 bit) I've found that the best mix for us has been at 1850M/256M - that
won't break the memory limits of a 32 bit OS... You may need to adjust
slightly depending on your OS. I you're running a 32 bit OS having gobs and
gobs of ram isn't going to help a lot because you can't give InnoDB more
than 2Gbytes.

Of course if it is used for something other than MySQL then you clearly need
to keep some memory available for that too.

On our setup we don't use autoextend for the InnoDB data files, we make a
whole lot of 2000M data files (like 40 of them) - some Operating systems
don't deal well with large files - if your single InnoDB data file is a
little on the large side, then maybe (small chance) the issue is there...
Again that would probably affect more than just replication so probably
isn't the cause.

One of the things that affects replication is the network link between the
two servers, are they both connected at high speed with similar duplex
settings... Shouldn't be an issue as Replication isn't that hard on the
network resources, but if you were running one server at 100Mbit/Full Duplex
and the switch was running at a 100/half or something, weird things could be
happening. We've even seen setups where one side was set to Autonegotiate
and other side was set to 100/Full causing problems, because they end up at
10/Half on one side and 100/Full on the other, which gives pretty scary
network performance.

With all possible respect, what you posted aren't tables, those are lists.
 At a minimum, tables have names and one or more fields; each field will
have a data type. Please post your table structure(s) and we can suggest
methods you can use to generate the output you desire.

Rocky Mountains  rm   Region
Colorado co   State
Montana  mt   State

That way, I can simply display the entire table as is
- complete with the headins - or I can use PHP to
block every row where TYPE = Region.

Does this sound like sensible plan, or are there
better options? Thanks.

2004-08-18 Thread Carl Millen
Hi,
My name is Carl Millen, and I am writing you this email from my home here in
sunny Queensland, Australia. The reason for this email is that you and I share
something in common...
At some point in our lives we contemplated or tried to start a home business.
Don't worry; I'm not trying to sell you anything. I just want to ask you a simple
question.
Is it possible that at this time in your life, you are open to taking a look
at a winning opportunity?
If your answer is Yes, reply to this email saying Send More Info (and let
me know your name and what country you're from) and I will send out some information
to you right away. If your answer is no please delete this email because I
will not be contacting you again.
Thank you so much for your time.
I hope you will at least take a free look.

Hi, I hope someone on the list can help me.

Is there an easy and straightforward way way of displaying the data from
three tables in a spreadsheet like format using MySQL 4.0?

Table A has the column headings
Table B has the row headings
Table C is a line items file than cross relates the two

Many thanks

Re: no subject

2004-07-23 Thread SGreen
If I understand you correctly Basically you want to convert this query
output:

+---+---+---+
|A.value|B.value|C.value|
+---+---+---+
|  a1   |  b1   |   c1  |
|  a1   |  b1   |   c2  |
|  a2   |  b1   |   c3  |
|  a2   |  b1   |   c4  |
|  a1   |  b2   |   c5  |
|  a1   |  b2   |   c6  |
|  a2   |  b2   |   c7  |
|  a2   |  b2   |   c8  |
|  a1   |  b3   |   c9  |
| ...   | ...   |  ...  |
| a(j)  | b(k)  |  c(n) |
+---+---+---+
into something like:
+---+--+--+--+---+
|   |a1| a2   |...   |   a(j)|
+---+--+--+--+---+
|  b1   | f(c1,c2) | f(c3,c4) |...   |...|
|  b2   | f(c5,c6) | f(c7,c8) |...   |...|
|  b3   |f(c9,...) |   ...|...   |...|
| ...   |   ...|   ...|...   |...|
|  b(k) | f(c1,c2) | f(c2,c3) |...   |f(...,C(n))|
+---+--+--+--+---+

Where f() represents one of the aggregate functions: SUM, AVG, STD, MIN,
MAX, etc.

Bad news: MySQL does not have an SQL-only solution for the general case
(when you do not know the number of columns)
Good news: it is usually quite simple to write a script to handle the
general case.
Good news: For a specific case (when you know the number of columns) the
query you seek to write follows a simple and predictable pattern and is
not hard to write at all.

If you would like help in writing a specific pivot table (cross-tab)
query. Please post your tables' structures (I prefer the output of SHOW
CREATE TABLE xxx) and tell us how you want your cross-tab report setup
(column headers from where, row headers from where, and a formula to use
for your cells)

FW: Subject: How can I speed up my queries

2004-06-23 Thread Peter Reali
I am new to MySQL but I hope that someone in this group can help out. I
am doing a research study on speeding up processing with database
The platform is a Pentium 4 2.66GHz Pc with 512MB of memory. Now I tried

increasing the memory to 2 Gigabytes but it did not seem to improve the
performance in any way. I don't see a lot of swapping to disk and the
database itself is easily able to fit into the 512kbytes of memory.
The operating system is Linux RH9.0 and I am using Mysql 5.0.
Does MySQL have some way of easily handling a sliding window? I could
only
do it by using a series of recursive queries that repeated The basic
query shown below over until the career of each player was Completely
covered. There are about 15000 players and 80,000 rows in the Batting
table itself.
The Query that I wrote takes 11 minutes but an oracle query only takes
about 1 minute

use baseball;
##THIS IS THE M TABLE WHICH GETS THE AVERAGE IN A 5 YR

SELECT  round(avg(batting.HR),2) as AVG_HR,
batting.HR as HR, batting.yearID as YR,

as YRS_PLAYED,l.PlayerID as PlyrID

As can be seen the time is 11 minutes and 31 seconds

handing out privileges I don't want these users to have, like
CREATE TEMPORARY TABLES.

What's the point of SHOW PRIVILEGES? There are a lot of privilege
columns in mysql.user that don't show in SHOW PRIVILEGES, yet
I can grant them and display them in SHOW GRANTS FOR ... .
I thought it was to keep the list of privileges in sync with
what the server actually supports?

How-To-Repeat:

Start mysqld.
Get warning message.
Run mysql_fix_privilege_tables.
Repeat ad nauseum.
Fix:

Is the mysql_fix_privilege_tables that came with 4.1.0-alpha
really up to date?

Agreed.

I simply delete messages with subject lines that don't say anything

 Your message cannot be posted because it appears to be either spam or
 simply off topic to our filter. To bypass the filter you must include
 one of the following words in your message:

 sql,query

 If you just reply to this message, and include the entire text of it in
the
 reply, your reply will go through. However, you should
 first review the text of the message to make sure it has something to do
 with MySQL. Just typing the word MySQL once will be sufficient, for
example.

 You have written the following:

 Is this what I have to live with? all my other lists have [TOPIC], which
is
 cool and very easy to get used to. It helps in getting past all the junk
 mail. If this can't be done, I'll just put it on my list for santa.

Hi,
I want to use MySQL to store ESM (Symantec Enterprise Security Manager)
data. The problem is that in one of their table, there is a field named
FullText.

I have tried to create it in the CREATE TABLE statement and it gives me this
message :
mysql create table ESMMessage2 (FullText text NOT NULL);
ERROR 1064: You have an error in your SQL syntax near 'NOT NULL)' at line 1

I have also tried to create the table, and then add the column with an ALTER
TABLE:
mysql alter table ESMMessage add (FullText text NOT NULL);
ERROR 1064: You have an error in your SQL syntax near 'NOT NULL)' at line 1

Would it be possible to have a column with this name ? How ?

Yan

Hi there!

Does anybody knows if there is a maximum in the number of tables for a database in
MySQL.

Of course it depends on the filesystem. But I want it to know for Win9x and Win2k.

[50 character or so descriptive subject here (for reference)] ./configure --with-mit-threads fails to compile vio/ and innodb/

2002-05-29 Thread dogcow

Description:
`./configure --with-mit-threads` fails to compile vio/ and innodb/ due to
missing -I directives for pthread.h.

How-To-Repeat:
in my particular case:
./configure  --prefix=/usr/local/mysql/ --with-named-z-libs=z --without-libwrap

In file included from ../include/my_sys.h:32,
 from vio.c:29:

Fix:
both innodb and vio don't seem to properly add a

adding it to the compile line seems to work.

RE: [MySQL] Access denied on LOAD DATA INFILE statement - no subject provided with posting

2002-04-26 Thread Barry C. Hawkins

Amit,
Perhaps try running your LOAD DATA INFILE statement typed at the
command prompt of the mysql client, and maybe you will get more info as
to what the problem is. You may have a MySQL installation where the
'LOAD DATA INFILE' statement is not permitted by default.
However, these are just guesses. For future reference, please
be sure to provide a meaningful subject line to your posting, and give
us as much information as possible regarding the version of MySQL you
are running, which platform you are running on, etc. Thanks, and best
of luck.

I just had the same exact error two days ago.

td checking for termcap functions library... checking for tgetent in
-lncurses... no
td checking for tgetent in -lcurses... no
td checking for tgetent in -ltermcap... no
td configure: error: No curses/termcap library found

BWhen you installed your RH system, did you install the curses/termcap
development tools? /B Some packages are split into runtime and
development
kits, so people who aren't interested in development don't need to waste
the diskspace.

The libtermcap libraries are in the libtermcap-devel package:

$ rpm -ql libtermcap-devel
/usr/include/termcap.h
/usr/lib/libtermcap.a
/usr/lib/libtermcap.so

Make sure that package is installed. You'll also need the ncurses package,
of course, but you probably already have that (so many things depend on
it).

The Key was I was missing the libtermcap-devel files. So download them, and
this solved the problem.

I also posted this here

If you want to see data from certain columns you should specify column
names in the SELECT statement, for example:
  SELECT name, birthday from table_name;

REPLACE acter or so descriptive subject here (for reference)]

2001-12-13 Thread bergeron

Description:

From the MySQL on-line manual (Section 7.22):

REPLACE works exactly like INSERT, except that if an old record in the table
has the same value as a new record on a unique index, the old record is
deleted before the new record is inserted.

From the MySQL on-line manual (F.2.3 Changes in release 3.23.34):

REPLACE will not replace a row that conflicts with an auto_increment generated key.

Table Structure
===

The following table exists in a replicated environment. The problem described
below occurs only during replication on the slave. There are no problems at
all on the master.

mysql describe ResumeRabbit_Status.status;
+-+--+--+-+-++
| Field   | Type | Null | Key | Default | Extra  |
+-+--+--+-+-++
| ID  | int(11)  |  | PRI | NULL| auto_increment |

|130516 | NULL | NULL   | |
+++--+--+-+---+-+--++-+

mysql

Problem
===
After upgrading to 3.23.34, I started getting the following errors on the slave:

mysql show slave status;
+--+-+-+---+-+--+---+-+-++---+--+
| Master_Host  | Master_User | Master_Port | Connect_retry | Log_File| Pos
| | Slave_Running | Replicate_do_db | Replicate_ignore_db | Last_errno |
|Last_error
|| Skip_counter |
+--+-+-+---+-+--+---+-+-++---+--+
| www.resumerabbit.com | replicator  | 3001| 60| ds1-bin.087 |
|8332 | No| ResumeRabbit_Status | | 1062   | error

|(OID,SiteCode,Time,Status) VALUES ('6048','AJ','985059892','P')' | 0|
+--+-+-+---+-+--+---+-+-++---+--+
1 row in set (0.00 sec)

mysql

After reviewing the change log for 3.23.34, it appears that this is the new documented
behaviour. However, when I use the REPLACE command on the master (to alter the data
that will get replicated) or from the command line tool on the slave it works in
the previously defined manner (that is it deletes the existing record and inserts
a new one complete with a new auto_increment ID).

How-To-Repeat:
Uncertain

Fix:
Work-around: Replace the REPLACE INTO sql statement with the appropriate
DELETE and INSERT INTO statements

 Hi all,

 I'm wondering if there are any good documents. how-tos or faqs which
 illustrate backup and recovery plans/process for MySQL databases.

Would it be possible to get a header prefix on the subject line for all email sent out
from this list.

For example;

This is becoming quite common these days and is very useful when interpreting the

Thanks!!

Subject: Mini-HOWTO: MySQL over SSH tunnel

2001-08-19 Thread David Tonhofer

Description:
Text that may or may not be added to the MySQL manual
How-To-Repeat:
Fix:

Hello,

As there is a description about using an SSH tunnel with Windows
in the MySQL doc, I thought a text about using an SSH tunnel with
UNIX might be in order. If you think the text below might warrant
inclusion in the MySQL manual, please feel free to modify it and
include it.

Note also that the manual says:

MySQL supports internal SSL connections as of Version 3.23.9.

but

Secure connections (with SSL).

is still in things that should be in 4.0.

So...does it support SSL or not?

Best regards,

-- David

===

Port forwarding of mysql connections over SSH in UNIX:

Suppose you want to connect to a mysql server running on a remote machine
called 'foo' as user 'fred', but you do not want to use an unencrypted
connection from your local machine 'bar' to the mysqld port (i.e. you do not
want to just do 'mysql -h foo -u fred -p' and risk somebody eavesdropping
on the data stream between machines 'foo' and 'bar')
You can use SSH to transparently encrypt the connection:
1) Make sure that the mysqld server lets user 'fred' connect from
   machine 'localhost.localdomain' (NOT from 'localhost') using password
   'mypassword'.
   Check the mysql manual on how to do this, you have to set up the
   mysql.user table accordingly.
   Note that your mileage may vary; I only got it to work with
   host = 'localhost.localdomain' in the user table.
2) Make sure that the SSH-daemon is running on machine 'foo' (some
   tuning may be required)
3) Make sure you have the SSH client on machine 'bar'.
4) Make sure user 'fred' has an account on machine 'foo'. Unfortunately
   this must be an account with a shell :-(
Now do the following:
Start the SSH client on your local machine 'bar' so that:
1) It listens on a given port on your local machine (to which you will
   connect afterwards). Let's use port 4000 (say). If you want to use
   a port below 1024, you will have to be root.
2) It connects to the SSH-daemon on machine 'foo' using the SSH protocol,
   thus ensuring an encrypted connection (you can select the encryption
   algorithm etc. using config files and the command line of ssh).
3) The SSH-daemon on machine 'foo' decrypts and locally forwards data
   to the mysql daemon which (by default) listens on port 3306.
4) Go for it:
   cmd ssh -L 4000:foo:3306 foo -l fred
You are now ready to connect to the mysqld through the SSH tunnel:
1) Start mysql with some additional options:
   cmd mysql --host==localhost.localdomain --port=4000 -p --user=fred
   mysql will ask for fred's database password and connect to the
   locally running SSH client listening on port 4000.
   If you give --host==localhost this will not work because mysql will
   attempt to connect using the local-only UNIX domain socket.
   If you give --host==bar this will not work either; the mysqld on the
   remote machine will just give an ERROR 2003, i.e. the connect()
   call on 'foo' failed, but can't imagine why. As said, your mileage may
   vary.
2) see ssh running with ps, and listening on port 4000 using netstat -a
3) interestingly, nmap does *not* show port 4000 as open from outside

You could probably write a pseudo-shell and put that into /etc/passwd (i.e.
#!/usr/bin/perl
while(STDIN){exit if /^exit$/m; print This is a pseudo shell. You
can only 'exit'.\n}
).

How reliable do ssh tunnels work over long periods of time nowadays?
Two years ago there were discussions about dropped/hanging(?)
connections when using tunneling large amounts of data (not mysql
specific).

What do you do when loosing connection (i.e. the server is restarted)?
Probably some sort of 'pinging' the connection is needed? i.e.
opening a connection to mysql over the tunnel on the client side,
doing 'select 1' periodically, if there's no response kill the ssh
client and restart it.

Has someone used replication over an ssh tunnel?

Christian.

I have followed the installation instructions in your manual and the var directory is

Now this is where I would find the data files had I done an RPM installation.

I find this strange because I did the same installation, from source, on tuesday on a
SUSE linux machine and had no problems at all. Or is /var/bin/mysql the place where
data files are supposed to be in a redhat linux installation?

RE: Adding a [mysql] to the subject line

2001-08-08 Thread Chris Bolt

 I am not sure if this has been addressed before, I think it would
 be neat if the list admin could put a [mysql] in the subject line
 for messages. I get a lot of email and it would help having that
 in the subject line. it would also help me in filtering my mail.
 Please let me know your comments.

Outlook can easily filter on the Delivered-To header which is common to all
messages sent to this list:

Delivered-To: mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED]

[mysql] in the subject line is bad because filtering based on that will also
filter offlist replies where the sender did not change the subject to remove
the prefix.

Your question is pretty vague. You'll probably want to investigate a web
scripting language such as PHP or Perl, which can interact with MySQL
databases. As far as making it user friendly for folks from sales, that
might be futile.  g
