[mythtv-users] Re: recording HD content

2005-04-11 Thread Neil
Hi Joe,

Joe Votour writes:

I don't do HD myself (I guess I'm behind the times
with my analog cable), but yes, it can be done.
However, if you plan on using a system with a
proprietary system (pretty much anything but OTA in
the U.S.), then you'll have to use their set-top box
to receive (and decrypt) the channels, and then record
them on your MythTV machine. This can be done by
Composite/S-Video, coaxial (if your set-top box
outputs in coaxial) or (possibly) Firewire.
Hmmm. I think, if we send out the HD stream via s-video, quality is already
degraded. Also, quality of s-video is just ok. Is there a way to preserve it
just like how we do it in Air2PC? Remember, s-video is analog. HD content is
digital.

I would like to know if someone is doing this kind of recording. How is the
picture quality? But will it really be able record the HD content if the
receiver has an svideo out?

You'll also need to have some method for MythTV to
switch channels on the set-top - either a serial cable
(if supported on your set-top box) or an IR Blaster.
Yep, I'm currently using a homebrew IR.

Also, note that apparently decoding HDTV in MythTV
requires a pretty beefy CPU and video card. You
should search the archives for suggestions from other
people who are successfully doing this.
No issues with my current machine since I'm already playing HD OTA content.
Quality is awesome.

I'd second that - I never need to touch anything on my setup. DVD with
DTS or DD through xine, videos with AC3 or mp3 tracks, DVB recordings,
mythmusic...

You can do a diff between mine (on my site mentioned earlier in the
thread) and Jarod's which I based mine off. My card is an older SB -
it's a Live 5.1 or some such beast - OEM if I remember.

I don't think I changed very much at all.

Re: [mythtv-users] Why 2 cards for PIP?

2005-04-11 Thread Maverick
This is slightly OT, but related. Can you watch a recorded show and
use the PIP window for the single tuner card TV playback? (or
visa-versa). I know it couldn't be done on a PVR-350 TVout, which is
what I'm currently using, but can this be done with normal TVout's?

[mythtv-users] Sync problems with nuvexport

2005-04-11 Thread Rex Wheeler
I have a MythTv box (.17) that I am trying to export recordings from. My
capture card is a PVR-150 so my .NUV files are RJPG based.

I am trying to export recordings so I can archive them to DVD. I can get
nuvexport to run and generate the export, but when I do so, the audio
ends up being slightly out of sync. It doesn't seem to matter if I
enable cut lists or not, or if I operate on files that have been
transcoded or not. (Most of my files have not been transcoded.)

I have recorded files back to October 2003 through current. (And have
used versions of MythTv that correspond back that far.) The problem is
consistent for all my files.

The amount that the sync is off is not consistent within the exported
file. I have tried altering the nuvexport scripts and manually adjusting
the delay when the video and audio are put back together, but since the
audio sync seems to drift, this doesn't work.

The MythTv native interface plays the files just fine.

I have noticed that there is a utility nuv2avi that is supposed to deal
with the sync issues better, but it doesn't handle RJPG files yet.

Short of hooking another PVR or DVD recorder to the output of my MythTv
box, does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can get my RJPG based
NUV files exported to something I can burn on a DVD with correct audio
sync?

I would be happy if someone could definitively tell me that:

1) Yeah, its broke, you are going to have to wait for nuv2avi; go buy a
DVR and record the output of your Myth box; or write the code yourself.

Or

2) I have your configuration and I had the same problem and I got it to
work by...

Or

3) I have your configuration and it really just does work for me. You
have something screwy with your setup.

But not

4) That ought to work...

Thanks,

Rex

[PATCH] Re: [mythtv-users] How well does commercial detection work?

2005-04-11 Thread Risto Treksler
Hi,

I haven't figured out why the minimum length is still not being honoured
and so I am going to privately send you the full debug output
from a couple of such shows

NOTE:
I think it's OK to have commercials shorter than 60sec
right in the beginning of the show!!
these are detected fine all the time and should continue to be detected as is

however there shouldn't be any really short commercial sections
in the middle of the show, but it's flagging them nonetheless
- (using method "all" with strict checking enabled)

ALSO here's a patch that fixes a few things

1) I DO NOT ignore logos in blank frames in STRICT mode

- this alone has eliminated virtually all false positives
- it even works reasonably well with shows that leave the logo up
i end up having to watch the first or the last commercial,
but that's ok b/c there are no false positives.
(There has got to be a way to: ONLY ignore these logos
if there are no completely blank frames at all in the show)

2) fix for the messed up data in my previous post

- long long vs. long
- "(long)it.key()" probably would have done it as well
- it didn't like %7lld either

3) fix for "white frames" triggering false positives

- NOT ONLY "(max - min) <= blankFrameMaxDiff"
- BUT ALSO "max < some reasonable amount"

Greetings!

We have received a very limited number of VIA's EPIA SP 13000
motherboards, and as a mailing list member, we're giving you the
opportunity to purchase before anyone else on a first-come,
first-served basis. We have approximately 1 board available for every
350 list members.

The EPIA SP can be considered to be the next generation EPIA M, with
MPEG-4 acceleration and SATA onboard. All cases compatible with the
EPIA M will work, including the Travla C158, C137, Morex Venus 668,
669, 3677, 3688, C146 and C147 cases. The SP boards can support up to
DDR400 (PC3200) DIMMs, but will also work fine with DDR266 (PC2100)
and DDR333 (PC2700) memory. Please don't ask us about the SP 8000E yet
- it will not be available until our next batch of boards arrive!

[mythtv-users] last image from mythtv or mythvideo re-appears on screen

2005-04-11 Thread Gabe Rubin
This may be better suited for the ivtv list, but when I stop playing
anything on myth (live tv, video, or recording), the final picture
from that input stays on the framebuffer (pvr-350). It does not show
up on the menus, but when I select a new video or go to live tv, the 2
second pause I usually get now has that screen paused before the real
thing I am trying to watch shows up.

Any idea what is going on here? It is not that big of a deal, but it
does seem wierd. It used to be a black screen. I had done a few
upgrades of my system, but put ivtv and myth-suite back to the most
stable version in the atrpms repo.

If I type the following, I get that last screen but ghosted and opage
in the background of my main screen until the fb gets something new to
pump out:
/usr/bin/ivtvfbctl /dev/fb0 -globalalpha -nolocalalpha.

Just seems a little wierd.

Re: [mythtv-users] recording HD content

2005-04-11 Thread Joe Votour
I don't do HD myself (I guess I'm behind the times
with my analog cable), but yes, it can be done.
However, if you plan on using a system with a
proprietary system (pretty much anything but OTA in
the U.S.), then you'll have to use their set-top box
to receive (and decrypt) the channels, and then record
them on your MythTV machine. This can be done by
Composite/S-Video, coaxial (if your set-top box
outputs in coaxial) or (possibly) Firewire.

You'll also need to have some method for MythTV to
switch channels on the set-top - either a serial cable
(if supported on your set-top box) or an IR Blaster.

Also, note that apparently decoding HDTV in MythTV
requires a pretty beefy CPU and video card. You
should search the archives for suggestions from other
people who are successfully doing this.

2005-04-11 Thread Joe Votour
Works perfectly for me, and it has for over a year
now. I have a pair of PVR-250's (well, actually, a
PVR-250 and a PVR-350, but I don't use the TV-Out),
and I'm using my own universal remote control instead
of the Hauppauge one. (This just means different

[mythtv-users] sound goes away when changing channels

2005-04-11 Thread Neil
Hi everyone,

I installed the latest cvs version yesterday. I only have Air2pc capture
card. When watching the first channel that comes up when I press
WatchTV(livetv), the sound is ok. Once I select another channel, picture
gets displayed but no sound. I quit livetv and select it again. The last
channel now gets a sound. What is the fix for this?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

[mythtv-users] recording HD content

2005-04-11 Thread Neil
Hi everyone,

Is it possible to record Discovery HD or other non-local broadcast HD from
Dish Network, Direct TV, Comcast or other program providers using HTPC?
Right now, I only have OTA HD recording via air2pc.

Any comments will be greatly appreciated!

No I never had a vcr configured anywhere near the Mythtv server.
the only thing I had attached to the tv that displayed Mythtv was a
dvd player, and FM radio.

Last year my set up was.

In lounge room
80cm LG TV
LG Home theater pack (includes little speakers, dvd player, and radio)
Computer system (AMD 2800+, 512 Meg RAM, 80Gig HDD, Fusion DVB card, NIC)
belkin switch/hub

Kitchen
Hp pavilion ze4103s

Study

2x Computer systems (same as above without dvb card)

I could watch tv using mythtv in the lounge room leave it running, and
walk into the study activate mythfrontend and what another channel,
while recording another show using mythtv.

earlier this month I rebuilt the box after my move I accidently called
up PIP but I can't remember the key I pressed I am not sure if it's
Myth or mplayer related.

[mythtv-users] Lirc Mythtv and hauppauge pvr-250 on FC3

2005-04-11 Thread Derek Tattersall
Has anybody gotten this combintion working?
I downloaded and built the kernel, then downloaded and built lirc-0.7.0
and then followed the instructions in the mythtv-HOWTO. Everything
seemed to go well until I tried to put the required lines in the
modules.conf file. It eems that that file no longer exists under redhat
FC3. there is a modprobe.conf file, though the syntax is a little
different. Modprobe chokes on these lines:

add below ivtv msp3400 saa7115 tuner
add above ivtv lirc_dev lirc_i2c
I don't think they are a problem though.
so anyway I do:
modprobe lirc_i2c
modprobe lirc_dev
then
lircd
I check the log files:
Apr 11 22:32:26 ninja kernel: ivtv: i2c attach [client=Hauppauge IR,ok]
Apr 11 22:32:26 ninja kernel: lirc_dev: lirc_register_plugin:sample_rate: 10
Apr 11 22:34:07 ninja kernel: lirc_dev: IR Remote Control driver
registered, at major 61

Then I start irw and start pressing buttons. Nothing happens. The remote
does work in windows, so it's not a hardware problem.

Does anyone out there have any suggestions on where to look now?

Re: [mythtv-users] commercial flagging idea - commercial "fingerprinting"

2005-04-11 Thread Brad Templeton

Yup, you'll find threads (often including me) about man of these sorts
of features. The long term version -- aggregating which parts of programs
people watch at normal speed and which they don't -- provides the only
undefeatable commercial detection algorithm, unless you are among the first
to watch a show, but it's a long way off. Fingerprints based on various
video and audio fingerprinting -- or even easier, on closed caption text when
present -- is a lot easier. Some of these can actually be applied without
collaboration, in that once you have identified a budweiser commercial by its
closed caption text you can spot it again everywhere. (Of course not all
commercials have captions.)

A _really_ fancy fingerprinting system could actually fingerprint shows and
notice when the same snippet of video appears in two different shows -- almost
always a commercial, but not always always -- and then cleverly delete the
redundant fragment and point to it. (Something myth can't yet do of course but
may be planned for the future.) One reason that's interesting is that aside
from spotting repeated commercials and repeated shows, it can also let you
browse the commercials and start learning what they are. Ie. some people like
to capture the movie trailers. Though web download is often a better idea
there.

I can understand why this user would be confused. That you need 2 tuners
is an artifact of Myth's particular implementation of PiP -- watching two
different live broadcasts at once. An odd interpretation for a program
where the whole idea is not to watch live broadcasts at all.

Original PiP in TV sets, in fact, was single-tuner. You used it to watch
a live broadcast in a box while watching a signal from something else like
a VCR. (If the VCR had a tuner you could watch 2 live broadcasts.)
"2 tuner PiP" was the 2nd generation of PiP.

I don't think you should ever need PiP once you embrace the DVR vision,
or if you need it, it would be extremely rare. Almost all TVs made recently
have it anyway, so I have never felt it should be a priority in Myth, 2 tuners
or not.

Do you have a properly setup /etc/hosts file? That could be causing
you the heartburn here. Also check perms by touching files (I find
that the easiest solution for basic troubleshooting permissions):
cd /mythtv/recording/directory
touch anything
If you get permission denied, you will want to investigate further, if
not, it's likely a problem is name resolution somewhere...

Good Luck!

I see what you are saying... and just based soley on my experience
using musicbrainz, it'll upload fingerprints for the songs that you
verify are correct. However, I don't think it'd be a problem if 10%
of the community were the ones editing shows. I for sure would not
edit every show I record, but I'd be more than happy to edit the ones
I care about the most. That's the philosophy behind musicbrainz as
well: self-moderation of content you are familiar with and care about.

So if a majority of people just wanted their mythcommflag job to go
out and see what others have submitted, then that'd be ok at least by
my standards. The theory is that it'll only help if people use it.
If no one manually checks the commflag and uploads their
"fingerprint", then mythcommflag will work just as well as it did
before. These results will only _help_ mythcommflag by boosting it's
algorithm with human verified data that only gets "smarter" the more
people verify and upload data.

> This also brings up the point that of some shows won't have very much

> percentage should take a look at what shows have the most data being
> reported, and then take a look at what shows you record.

Yea, but I don't think of it that way. Musicbrainz has the same
problem. Lets say you rip a CD of a band that happens to be a local
band no one knows and only has 10 CDs in existence. You can
accurately identify them (if you want), but you aren't going to get
probably a single other person to do so to strengthen the fingerprint
and data.

However, if you rip a CD from the most popular band in the world, you
can guarentee hundreds of others will probably do the same and it'll
make the data even better and "smarter" because there's so much more
data to verify against and make a proper comparison.

Also, think about the variables that musicbrainz deals with (320Kbps
MP3 vs 64Kbps MP3 vs radio recording vs live vs acoustic vs covers..
etc... etc...). Same goes for TV. You have HDTV vs Cable vs OTA vs
crappy cable (like me) etc etc. So, if 10% of the myth community
records "Law & Order" and verifies the commercial, uploads their
fingerprints, then you have a variety of information that can be
compiled to make it smarter because of more data.

Who cares if 2 people recorded "Bob's Fishing Show" on some local
public channel? But what if 500 people record "Lost"? See the
difference?

> being recorded don't have very much data, you would be required to

> What do people think of this?

I think requiring people to do anything is the wrong approach. I
think this should definitly be an opt-in type of deal. If you want
to... go for it, if you don't... don't. But just know that if it's a
more popular show, that you might want to help out because in the end
you'll benefit as well. :)

Re: [mythtv-users] PVR 500 static on both tuners

2005-04-11 Thread Garry Cook
This is the last time I'll respond to my own post, I promise. I just
want to update the archives with the fact that I now have all four
tuners working properly.

I tried forcing the tuner types in modprobe.conf, which made things
worse. So, I removed the line, rebooted, and decided to check the IRQ
assignments one more time. In the BIOS, I moved the PVR250 (which was
being detected as a 150 and had no audio) from IRQ9 to IRQ10. That did
it. Everything now works perfectly.

Thanks again for the help everyone.

Sorry this is long: For the short version, just read the first two

I had an idea a few months ago, and just thought I'd throw it out
there. I think that mythcommflag is getting better and better.
However, sometimes there are times it'll goof up, and some shows are
notroriously harder than others to flag correctly by their unique
filmographic nature(Lost, Law & Order, CSI, etc...).
How about a method where users can validate mythcommflag's results and
make that info available to the myth community to strengthen the
accuracy of commercial flagging by using verified data.
In a perfect world, all of the commercial breaks would all happen at the
same time. Everywhere.

In reality, they do not. Every master cable headend follows a local
origination commercial insertion schedule sent daily by their traffic
and billing department. LO comercials are notoriously inconsistent when
they start and stop as they are cued by tones from the satellites and
last until the T&B schedule *thinks* they should end. Furthermore, LO
commercials are stored and played back from either 1/2" or 3/4 VTR decks
(old-n-busted) or by digital insertion systems (new-hotness). In either
case, the tapes are remastered to the cableco's preferred format or
encoded on commercial MPEG-2 gear and stored on VOD servers built for
this purpose (e.g. SeaChange). This process would require every
underpaid tech at every headend to get it right every single time. They
don't.

D*TV and Dish subscibers have it somewhat better but inconsistencies
still occur.

IIRC, this has been discussed here before in greater detail with a good
number of pro's and con's.

Re: [mythtv-users] PVR 500 static on both tuners

2005-04-11 Thread Garry Cook
One step forward, two steps back...

In answer to my own question from the previous post, I found the
recording profiles in MythTV Utilities--> Setup --> TV Settings -->
Recording Profiles and set them up to capture at 720x480. The PVR 500
now works flawlessley. However, for some reason my first PVR250 is
being detected as a PVR150, and I get no audio on this card. The video
is also a bit jerky.

I think what I'll do is run mythtvsetup, delete the cards, and then
set them up in the order of 1,2,3,0, so that /dev/video0 will be the
last card used. That way, I will at least have three tuners until I
can get this figured out.

The only issue I can really see here comes that this is required that
people have to upload their verified commercials. I can forsee that
there are many people who would rather be lazy and download this data
than upload their own. There would have to be some sort of system to
enforce that everyone puts in their own share of data. Perhaps if you
use this feature, you are required to hand verify your own results for
some pre defined percentage of the shows, and report those.

This also brings up the point that of some shows won't have very much
data - say for example a show local only to your area. This predefined
percentage should take a look at what shows have the most data being
reported, and then take a look at what shows you record. If your shows
being recorded don't have very much data, you would be required to
submit data for your shows.

What do people think of this?

On second thought, something looks plain weird about this output anyway. The

you do that then remake and rerun flagging and see if you get the same

Thanks Matt, that was very helpful. At this point I've upgraded my
BIOS, which may have helped. I can now manually change the IRQs in the
BIOS. However, two of them will continue to share one IRQ, I assume
these are the two 150s on the PVR500. However, I think that the issue
was caused by one of the tuner cards sharing an IRQ with my Nvidia
card, which I was able to move to a different IRQ.

So, now I have 4 tuners (on 3 cards) which all play audio and video.
However, /dev/video2 & 3 (PVR500) stretch the screen so I can only see
the left side. I made sure to set them to 720x480 capture, as per
Jarod's guide. However, when I run the command that you mention above
(ivtvctl -a -d /dev/videoX) each card shows that it is capturing at
480x480 (after a reboot).

Using 'ivtvctl -f ...' I set the cards back to capture at 720x480 and
it worked! All four tuners now show GOOD video and have audio as well.
Then I restarted Mythbackend, and was right back where I started. So,
it looks like this issue is almost solved (Thanks guys!). Now I just
need to know where to set the capture resolution in MythTV, I think...

[mythtv-users] commercial flagging idea - commercial "fingerprinting"

2005-04-11 Thread Matt
Hello All, =D

Sorry this is long: For the short version, just read the first two paragraphs.

For example. You record an epsiode of "Lost". You let mythcommflag
run, and it detects commercials 90% correct. Then you go in and edit
the recording and import the commercial flags by pressing "Z"... so
far, everything like normal. Once the commercial markings are in
there, you edit them so they are correct (cut off the begining
commercials before the start of the show, make sure commercials are
detected correctly, and make sure that there aren't any improperly
detected cuts in the middle of the show, etc).

Then, once you have explicitly defined the commercials, some process
could identify these as " Human Verified to be Correct". Then, the
next time a user runs mythcommflag on that episode, the service can
verify it's results based on those verified results and adjust
accordingly.

This is where it gets difficult and several different solutions might
be available:

1) Digital fingerprints - Not sure if you anyone is familiar with
MusicBrainz (http://www.musicbrainz.org/) or not. What it does is
take an mp3 file, analysis it and make a digital finger print of it.
Then, it sends that fingerprint to a database to compare with other
fingerprints that people have submitted. It can then make a
comparison and correctly identify the file and populate the ID3 tags
of an otherwise un-identified file. The more people that ID a file,
the "smarter" it becomes and the better it can do at identifying
files. Once the program has been correctly marked, and some kind of
"fingerprint" is made from the show, then it could be uploaded to a
central database where other's can look for that show and episode to
compare mythcommflag results so that the mythcommflag can do a better
job based on the verified results sent by users who manually made sure
the commercial detection was correct.

2) Time based - Possibly more difficult, however you have to assume
that the time of the show between commercial breaks is going to be
(nearly) identical. So, in almost the same way, if mythcommflag has a
false positive for a commercial, it can review what others have
verified as correct and say "hey, there shouldn't be a commercial here
because 40 other users say there is a time block of 15 minutes, not
7.5 + commericial + 7.5 more, etc.

3) Identify individual commercials (not the entire commercial break) -
Along the same lines as #1, identify specific commercials. So,
anytime an acme company commercial is recorded, mythcommflag
could/would be able to identify it as a commercial soley because it's
"learned" that it is. This could possibly have more overhead and
possibly labor intensive. With the constant turnover of advertising,
as well as locally broadcast commercials, it might not be worth it and
it'd be a ton of information. However, it could see where this might
be useful for short teaser clips you see at the begining or the end of
certain shows or that certain networks frequently use.

4) combination of the above - I think if you went with the
fingerprint, a time based solution would almost be included in that.

5) Other - I'm sure others would have other suggestions that might
work for this.

I know that this is a centralized approach, but seeings how it would
be what I call a "bonus" feature, people that don't want to
participate wouldn't have to sort of thing. Perhaps their's a
decentralized approach as well. Mythcommflag could still work WITHOUT
this feature, it's just something that can reinforce the accuracy of
commercial flagging in myth. I'm also not sure about the legalities,
PC, etc that a methodology like this would have or Issac's stance on
the issue as I don't know if it's ever been thought of up to the
point.

Anyway, I'm not a developer, nor am I pleading or begging anyone to
develop this... I just think it sounds cool and if anyone has the
know-how or if a few developers think it'd be fun to work on it, I'd
love to help out any way I can.

So, what do all of you think? I know it could be a large project...

[mythtv-users] Adding a Hauppauge WinTV PVR to an existing MythTV box...

2005-04-11 Thread Derek Conniffe
Hi All again!

I'm really enjoying my MythTV box now - I've got a PVR350 and a Nexus-S card
in there working really well and providing lots of entertainment for the
whole family.

There are times when I'd really like to record two programs at the same time
and unless one is "normal" TV and one is Satellite I can't.

So I've picked up another Hauppauge card from Ebay...

It’s a "Hauppauge WinTV PVR" (but not a 250 or 350) - however it seems to be
BT878 based (hello BTTV) but also seems to have a MPEG2 encoder on-board.

Does anyone know how I can get this to work with an existing MythTV
installation? I'm using my PVR350 for MPEG2 TV output (really good when
using a PVR350 and a Nexus-S!) but I'd guess that if I only use the BTTV
driver for the WinTV PVR card then the recordings wouldn't be MPEG2 by
default?

Is there some way to use the MPEG encoder on the Hauppauge WintTV PVR or is
there some way to record from the card and then store in MPEG2 format for
playback on the PVR350?

Many many thanks as always,

Derek

Press "9" and you will see "[wxyz90]". Press "9" five more times to

My slave backend has a HD-2000 and a PVR-350 in it. I am using the DVB
drivers for the HD-2000 and ivtv-0.2.0-rc3? for the PVR-350.

I had to rename the msp3400.ko which the HD-2000 drivers installed, so it
would pick it up from the ivtv driver. No problem with the tuner.

I am using the DVB HD-2000 drivers from the CVS snapshot, but the 2.0
drivers probably work fine.

I did have to go in and manually edit mythconverg DB settings to get the DVB
stuff to work. The DVB "scan" creates different CHANNEL entries from
zap2it. After the DVB "scan" completed, I went in and added the information
that DVB needs to function, to the CHANNEL entries which I already had from
zap2it. I then deleted the CHANNEL entries which DVB added.

Good! I've found the latest version of Project X on my 2.6 GHz p4 to
be fast enough that I don't feel the need to experiment with avidemux.
There are some dlls for windows in the source to speed it up even more

Yes Project X does use a lot of memory. 3-500 MB at times!

Well, perhaps that isn't my issue. I tried to run the commands

I have 1/2 dozen or so recorded programs and they show up in Myth's
view and watch recordings screens. When I try to use nuvexport to
export to DVD (I did try other formats), when asked which recording I
want to export, nuvexport is showing only one of my recordings.
upgrade nuvexport. I incorrectly set it defaulting to "cutlist only"
display, so you're seeing the one recording that has a cutlist. The
latest version defaults to displaying all files.

Either that, or edit your nuvexportrc to turn that feature off.
-Chris
All recordings are recorded in the same format, stored in the same
place, and do exist. Any idea's about what might be going on? The one
recording that does show up does export ok.

Now that I think about, the one recording that is showing up is the only
recording that was done as "manual recording" as opposed to scheduled
via the program guide.

Unless you absolutely insist on having your local station, there are
a number of stations out there that stream directly in mp3 format, even
a few that stream in vorbis (which my player handles) and so you may
find it better just to record those with a stream recorder and then
sync them into your mp3 player.

And of course there are lots of amateur stations that stream in mp3
and these don't even have commercials for you to remove.

While generally mythtv's own built in advanced queries are just fine for
long term keyword queries, the tvwish program can also do this:
http://www.templetons.com/brad/myth/tvwish.html

tvwish allows you to make generalized SQL queries (though it's more often
used for long wishlists) so it can do this. It reports anything it queues up
on stdout. It is normally run from the cron, so as a result the cron e-mails
you any programs it sets up to record.

If you prefer not to have the cron do that, you could trivially wrap it in
a script to mail you the output if there is any output (which is effectively
what the cron is doing anyway, so I don't bother.)

In this case you would add a line to the file like this.

Sql: title like '%tiger%' OR subtitle like '%tiger%' OR description like
'%tiger%'

And it should do the trick.

RE: [mythtv-users] PVR-350 displays OSD but not video - .17 apt-getupgrade

2005-04-11 Thread John Harvey
I believe this is caused by blt_fill code in the firmware crashing
occasionally. I was working on some changes and managed to get to a point
where this was very reproducible (though not every time).

In libs/libmythtv/videout_ivtv.cpp in the function ClearOSD() there is some
code that looks something like
  if (version > 0x0)
{
 Clear using old method
} else
{
Clear using BLTFILL;
}

If you change this so it always uses the old method you might find it fixes
the problem. Easiest way is to just make the number being compared against
larger termporarily.
I spent ages looking at this and came to the conclusion that the firmware is
broken in some way or there is a horrible interaction with the dma code.

The record now command is press the R key while watching live TV. If
you are wanting a way to watch the videos and manage them then I guess
mythTV is better for you than developing a specific app for it. Or
using the cat command line.

Give pressing R in code a shot and let us know how it goes.

Hmm, shouldn't the hwclock be set to UTC and you should have
/etc/localtime symlinked to the correct timezone file (e.g.

I am using RFID reader to detect the tags. Everything related to reader, mythtv
and camera is already set up. All we need to do now is initiate the recording
on some action. What is that ‘record now’ command that you are talking about.
Where I can read about creating the lirc loop back?

I thought of doing the same (cat /dev/video0 > my.mpg), but the problem with
that is we donÂ’t want to get into the management of all the videos and then
playing them back. So, that is why I thought of using the MythTV. I am
currently using camera as a security camera which should record any
authorized/unauthorized RFID tag.

Also, getting back to what you have suggested, is there any way so that I can
playback the videos that I have recorded directly (from cat /dev/video0

[mythtv-users] nuvexport problem

2005-04-11 Thread Michael J. Lynch
System is Athlon-XP 3200+ running FC2 and using MythTV from CVS as
of last Friday.
I have 1/2 dozen or so recorded programs and they show up in Myth's
view and watch recordings screens. When I try to use nuvexport to
export to DVD (I did try other formats), when asked which recording I
want to export, nuvexport is showing only one of my recordings.

Hello,
AFAIK, there is no way you are going to be running on an EPIA without
building a kernel on your own, so having to compile in support for
temp monitoring and speed changes shouldn't be a big addition.

KnoppMyth R5A12. Using the CD as a frontend takes about 50% CPU.
Installing to hard drive and installing the XvMC-VLD debs uses about 13%
CPU (personally tested on a MII w/ 1.2 GHz processor). The next release
will have MPlayer and Xine built w/ xxmc.

2005-04-11 Thread Asher Schaffer
I agree it isn't the easiest thing to get working. The first time I
did it, it took 4 days to get working, a lot of that was compile time
however. The second time I did it (after I hosed one of the
partitions, entirely my fault), it only took about a day and a half,
this time almost only compile time, minimal troubleshooting.

There is the issue of getting everything just right, I'm running on an
M10k. It shouldn't be that bad, I use the machine for myth, to serve
up a few webpages, and for bit torrent. I actually have azureus
running on that machine, it is a huge memory hog, but the machine
still records and plays just fine.

AFAIK, there is no way you are going to be running on an EPIA without
building a kernel on your own, so having to compile in support for

Maybe the EPIA isn't for the faint of heart, it does need HW decoding
inorder for it to be usable. If you are building a HTPC, you should
get everything working before it is rolled out in production though,
even if it has more then enough power and you can get away with it,
otherwise you will find yourself tinkering with a production box and
end up frustrated cause you can't watch your shows.

One way to try this is looking at your dmesg output and seeing which
cards load. They load for me in order. 0, 1, 2, 3

The other way should be:

ivtvctl -a -d /dev/video0 | more (then incrementing 1,2,3,x)... this
will show you which card is being registered. PVR-500s show up as two
PVR-150s.

At this point I'm back to my original two tuners. I am about to try
again with the PVR 500. However, there is one thing that I am not sure
about.

How do I determine which card and tuner correspond to /dev/videoX?
Is there a command to verify this, or do I just assume the card
directly below the AGP slot is /dev/video0 and count down from there?
Searching the archives for IRQ sharing did not yield much. I tried
booting with 'noacpi', but this did not seem to help. Any tips on
forcing IRQs?

If I really knew for sure which tuner was having troubles, it might
make this problem easier to track down. Since I had both tuners on the
500 working at one point, while one of the 250s stopped working, I
believe that this is not a driver issue, but a problem with IRQ
resources. It's very similar to an issue that I had with just the two
250s, which I solved by moving one to a different slot.

[mythtv-users] gave up on the Epia

2005-04-11 Thread Micah Wedemeyer
Hi all,

Well, I've finally given up on my Epia frontend/backend. It worked reasonably
well for about 8 months and I got TV and DVD playback to finally work, but it
was a very flaky platform. About a week ago, I was trying to rip a DVD while
watching TV at the same time, and it locked up (DMA bug is my best guess). On
reboot, I found that there was something wrong with the superblock of the XFS
partition where all my recordings were stored.

To make a long story short, when I tried to repair things, I screwed up the
whole partition table and it no longer boots at all.

Anyways, I don't want to bore you any more with my sad tales, but I do want to
put out some warnings to potential Myth builders looking at the Epia platform.
Like me, you will doubtless plunge in anyway, but at least you'll have a litte
fore-warning.

(My) Issues with the Epia:
--
* Getting the Unichrome drivers to work could take a good amount of work. It
may have gotten easier in the last few months, but I sure had a lot of trouble.
If you're going for a trouble-free install of Linux/Myth, then the Epia is
probably a bad idea. (Note: This is not a critique of the Unichrome drivers. I
used them and loved them. It just took a lot of effort to get everything
working.)

* The Epia has a known issue with DMA. Check some of the postings at
forums.viaarena.com I never had a problem when recording TV, but I definitely
had a problem when transferring files over the LAN. If I tried to scp a file
from my desktop to the Myth box, it would lock up hard in about 5 seconds. So,
if you're hoping to use your Myth box as a media server (like I was), then Epia
is definitely a bad idea. Again, this is personal experience backed up by
others on the viaarena forums. YMMV

* Many of the Epia MII boards have a bad PCMCIA slot (at least under Linux).
When I plugged in my wireless card, dmesg would say that the slot refused to
respond to requests to apply power to the card. I was able to find a workaround
by using Linuxant's driverloader, but it was still a big hassle.

* Getting the on-board temperature sensors and dynamic CPU clocking to work will
take a kernel-recompile. At least it did the last time I checked. So, if you
want the clock frequency to dynamically adjust to CPU load and/or temp, get
ready for some work.

* The slow speed leaves little headroom for mistakes and halfway kludges. By
this I mean: with a fast system, you don't have to get everything working
perfectly. Who cares about hardware decoding when you've got 2+ Ghz and
software decoding barely registers on the CPU? I have a lot of respect for the
people running the Epia ME6000s. If they can't get hardware decoding to work,
then they're pretty much SOL. Besides, even if everything works, working with a
slow machine can be quite painful. Try compiling a kernel 10 times on one of
these things and you'll see what I mean.
---

I guess my bottom line here is that getting an Epia/Linux system up and running
can be a lot of work. Plus, in some cases (like the DMA issue), you may never
find a solution. I finally got mine to work, but it was never 100%, and I was
too afraid of screwing up what I had in order to tweak it more. So, if you're
like me, and you just want a Myth box that works, take my advice and skip the
Epia.

I know a lot of people will disagree with me, and please feel free to voice your
opinions. I just wanted to play devil's advocate for all the people out there
that are eyeing the Epia as their Myth platform. They need to know that it will
not be a cakewalk in order to get it set up.

Now, let's just see if I sing this same tune after I've tried putting together a
Myth box based around a AMD Sempron and an nForce-3 150 motherboard.

A couple things actually =). You don't have to type all this in by

I cannot type a 0 in... The number keys

How do I insert a 0?
This, and other text entry boxes in myth, uses MythRemoteLineEdit
which uses the number keys like the numbers on a cell phone for
text entry. "0" is "Operator" so zero is actually a choice with "9".
Press "9" and you will see "[wxyz90]". Press "9" five more times to
highlight "0" then SELECT (Enter) or just wait for it to time out.
MythTV is the only DVR system which allows you to use the number

- If you've set a record rule, Go to the Manage Recordings->Set
Priorities. "tigers (Keyword Search)" will be in the list. If it
is white and says (Recording 0 of 0) below the box then there are
no upcoming matches. If it is green and says (Recording 1 of 1)
then there is a new match coming up. Press UPCOMING ("O") to see
the list of matches. This is also an on-screen notification.
- Looking at the Upcoming Recording page would also be an on-screen
notification.
- Go to Schedule Recordings->Search Lists->New Titles. This selects
everything that is in your current listings that doesn't match any
title that has been in your listings before. This includes movies
which haven't been shown before (or at least not in the past year
or since you started running myth), new series that are about to
start or any new specials. This will find many more interesting
things than just tigers and is worth checking every few days. Pressing
the view keys here cycles through Movies, Series, Specials and All.
- If you wanted to add email notification you would probably want
to add something at the end of the daily task to update the listings
to use the keywords from the keyword table and format the output of
the queries but I don't think this would turn out to be all that useful.

The easiest way seemed to be apt-get remove mythtv which removed
almost the whole suite. I cleaned up what remaining theme rpms were
still there and then reinstalled mythtv-suite, so it worked. However,
I am curious what the bugs were from and why I get those errors in my

2005-04-11 Thread Gabe Rubin
Hi all,

Last night I upgraded my system to bleeding via apt-get to get a

Well I'm still not having much luck tuning QAM channels. so I tried
giving Comcast a call and asking for a Motorola 6200 with firewire
enabled. It was if I was talking a different language. The CSR
wanted to know what I wanted to hook up with it, I said my tv, and a
computer. She said they didn't support usb connections yet. I said I
know that, I want firewire, and that I could show here the FCC docs
where they have to provide it to me. After putting me on hold she
came back and said that they don't have boxes with firewire enabled.
This sounds like BS to me as we are pretty close to Comcast's
headquarters, and are often a proving ground for new tech (on demand
and the comcast pvr box for example).

Anyone have any insight on how to deal with the cable co. to get a firewire box?

I know there is some talk in the archives about the FCC site with the
terms, but how do you communicate this to the cable co?

Thanks.

That was it, the new version produced absolutely in sync files that I
have had no problems using with avidemux to convert to dvd's. I just
went with the defaults and had no sync related issues.

I did run into a weird issue where I ran out of java heap space ...

And to clarify one more level (since I find I didn't before), that *is*
true if you're using frame-grabber cards instead of hardware-MPEG
cards, since those do *not* capture audio, and Myth has to do it
itself, though a sound card.

Given the price of HMPEG cards these days, that solution is widely
regarded as not worth bothering with, unless you're *really* short of
cash, and have all the parts laying around.

As HMPEG cards get cheaper and cheaper, it will become not worth
bothering with, period.

[mythtv-users] LCD monitors that support native 720p?

2005-04-11 Thread Marc Christensen
Hi all,
I ended up taking the ProView PL576Ws widescreen monitor back since it
lacked the ability to display native 720p:
http://blog.mecworks.com/articles/2005/04/07/proview-pl576ws/
http://blog.mecworks.com/articles/2005/04/09/return-pl576ws-new-wrt54g/
So, the whole point is to get a monitor that will simultaneous display
what is sent to the projector either through a display splitter or my
nVidia 5700LE dual out. My intent would be to not set up dual-head and
display the same output on both monitors
My projector is native 720p so I'm looking for an LCD that will do that.
Does anyone have any recommendations? I would prefer widescreen
however, the ProView PL576Ws had the perfect price: $229.00 USD. I
doubt I'll find another widescreen LCD display that does 720p for that
cheap so, 4x3 aspect ratio is fine.
Any recommendations?

[mythtv-users] Podcasting Idea

2005-04-11 Thread Dan Littlejohn
Had this idea and thought I would float it out there for anyone who is
ambitious. I would like to work on it, but do not know when I might
have time.

Anyway, I read an article the other day about how people with ipods
are recording radio station and other types of broadcasts and then
loading them into their ipod to listen to later. I have a large cd
collection, etc, but I also have an hour commute each way and it is
hard to keep new stuff in the deck. What I was thinking is that you
could use myth to record a local fm station broadcast, then skip the
commercials before loading it into an ipod. (Maybe Chris Pinkham's
code has an audio component?). One of the stations I listen to has
literally, 10 minutes of programing and 5 minutes of commercials for
each 15 minute block.

Don't own an ipod yet, but would if I could do that. Just an idea.

My troubleshooting step consisted of purchasing an inexpensive sound

I really think there's something off with that driver on some onboard

[mythtv-users] Audio - one channel doesn't play sounds

2005-04-11 Thread Claude Boucher
I have the wierdest audio problem with my fresh install of MythTV 0.17
(FC3, latest 2.6.10 kernel, installed using Jarod's howto and updated
with ATrpms).

My analog cable is connected to a PVR-250 through a coax cable and the
quality is good for all 42 or so channels, except for one channel where
I get video, but no sound at all.

It's wierd, because, I get sound on this channel on another TV connected
directly to the coax and on my cable box. The card is probably not the
culprit because I pulled the PVR-250 from my Myth box and I've put it in
my Windoze box, where I get sound on this channel.

I don't know if it is relevant, but the channel (TV5) primarly airs
programs from France which are transcoded to NTSC before they are
broadcast on my Canadian cable system.

I use the on-board audio of my MoBo (an Asus A7N8X-VM/400) which uses
the snd-intel8x0 driver with the following configuration in
/etc/modprobe.conf

- CODE -
[...]
alias snd-card-0 snd-intel8x0
[...]
options snd-card-0 index=0
install snd-intel8x0 /sbin/modprobe --ignore-install snd-intel8x0 &&
/usr/sbin/alsactl restore >/dev/null 2>&1 || :
remove snd-intel8x0 { /usr/sbin/alsactl store >/dev/null 2>&1 || : ; };
/sbin/modprobe -r --ignore-remove snd-intel8x0
- CODE -

What should be my next troubleshooting steps ?
Thanks in advance,
Claude
PS: I searched the list before posting and I found two threads with a
similar problem (one in December 2004 and the other last February). but
there were no answers.

FAQ! FAQ!! :-)

If your capture cards are Hardware-MPEG, like the Hauppauge, and I'm
*pretty* certain the AVer, Yuan, and the new Plextor external, then the
audio is being embedded in the capture stream, and you are *not* using
your onboard audio for recording, only for playback.

Adding extra cards, therefore, is no problem.

Snapstream has a demo box with 5 PVR-500's in it, that can record 10
shows simultaneously.

In the contrib directory there's a script, myth.rebuilddatabase.pl,
that will (quoting from the script):

## Here is what this program is supposed to do.
## It first scans through your myth database and displays all shows listed
## in the recorded table.
## It will then traverse your myth directory (set with --dir /YOURMYTHDIR) and
## find all your .nuv files and check them against the database to make sure
## they have an entry. If no entry exists, you will be prompted for the title
## and subtitle of the recording and a record will be created.
