[mythtv-users] log files anywhere?

2005-05-01 Thread Steve Quezadas
Whenever I try to play a game in mythgames, it doesn't work. IE, when I
select an item in the menu, nothing comes up. I tried "enter" key and
"space" key and nothing comes up. I want to check the logs to see what's
going on or what command is pressed, but I can't seem to find ANY logs
of what is going on. I tried running the mythbackend and mythfrontend
with verbose settings on "all" and nothign seems to be reported.

Does anyone know of a good way to debug this?

Yes I'm still seeing it. A while back someone said that they had changed it in
CVS but I never saw a corresponding cvs commit message.

This is one of the most annoying issues for me currently - of the 30 odd UK
DVB channels 50% are junk (shopping channels, childrens channels etc) so I've
flagged them as not visible. They still appear in browse mode though which is
a royal pain.
I prefer it the way it is. In the EPG I want just those channels that I
schedule recordings on, but in browse mode I also want to see other
channels that I only use when surfing live tv (like the music channels).

If I want to hide a channel completely I just set its source to
unassigned (are there any pitfalls with doing this?).

[mythtv-users] Remote encoder not responding and WriteStringList: Bad socket

2005-05-01 Thread Todd Flinders
Hi,

I've been stumped for the last several hours and haven't had luck with Google
or the archives.

I had my myth working amazingly well for about 30 minutes until I got curious
and clicked "System Status" in the menus. This caused myth to crash and ever
since I've been unable get my myth working again. :-(

I'm using MythTV 0.18 on Fedora Core 3 from Jarod's guide. I have a PVR-350
with TV-out and two PVR-250s for more recording. Everything is running on
just one machine. It has a wireless NIC for accessing channel information
(which is at wlan0, not eth0). I previously had BackendServerIP and
MasterServerIP set to 192.168.2.3, but I've since set them to 127.0.0.1.
This seems to have made no difference.

Anytime I try to Watch TV now from a fresh boot, it works for about a 30
seconds to a minute, but won't respond to the remote (which works perfectly
in the menus). While the video is quite nice overall, I do see brief burst
of thin horizontal lines of static, which I did not see before. After this
time, it will crash back to the menus (sometimes all the way to the terminal
with a Segmentation fault.) If I try to watch LiveTV again, about 90% of the
screen will be covered by a big black box (but I can see perfect video around
the edges) for about the same duration of time. For just a second before it
crashes I see perfect video, then it usually crashes to the terminal with
Segmentation fault.

I receive the same results as a normal user and as root. I receive the same
results when I tell myth to use my pvr-350 tv-out and also when I tell it not
to.

Thinking that I (or my System status crashed) may have fouled up some setting,
I decided to completely wipe out the mythconverg database and rebuild it.
Sadly, that didn't make any difference.

Also, if I cat /dev/video* >> ~/sometest.mpg that seems to play back just fine
for each card.

Finally, I do have lirc_lib installed because some parts of myth depend on it,
but I don't believe I need lirc. My remote uses a different driver based off
the old ati_remote driver. For laughs I have tried installing lirc and
starting it up before mythfrontend, but I've not noticed that make a
difference.

Does anyone have any ideas that I can try? I'm having a real hard time with
this one! Thanks!

Following is the output I receive from mythfrontend:

[mythtv-users] Is an AMD Athlon 2800+ with MX440 video powerful enough for DVB HDTV?

2005-05-01 Thread Craig Read
I'm hoping somebody can give some advice on how to resolve some problems
I have.

I've recently had an antenna guy come out with $8k worth of equipment to
try and resolve signal problems at my house. He's relocated the
antenna, checked the signal strength and ber and said that everything is
now well within the threshhold for any HDTV capable device to correct
any errors that are there.

The problem is, I still have errors on 1 SD channel and HD channels are
still unwatchable. When I showed him the picture on my MythTV box, he
said the only thing he could think of was that the machine isn't
powerful enough to handle the error correction on the signal coming in.
Looking at the HD picture on Channel 7 (I'm in Australia), I'd have to
agree. There are very few audio and video artifacts, but the video is
choppy. The one SD channel that breaks up (channel 9) does have
artifacts though.

So I've gone through increasing the priority of mythbackend (modifying
the 'NICE=' line in the '/etc/init.d/mythtv-backend' script) and doing
'chmod a+s' on all of the mythtv related programs.

When watching live TV from the remote front end and viewing the output
from top running on the backend, I'm getting 94.4-95% idle when watching
live TV on channel 2 (one of my best channels). I get the same on
channel 9 (even though there are artifacts) and the same on channel 70
(channel 7's HD channel) even though the video is a little choppy.

When watching live TV from the backend and viewing the output from top
running on the backend, I'm getting 73-74% idle when watching live TV
from the backend on channel 2 (one of my best channels). I get 70-72%
idle on channel 9 (even though there are artifacts) and 76-77% idle on
channel 70 (channel 7's HD channel).

One thing I have noticed is the HD channel is less choppy on the remote
front end than on the system doing the recording. The remote front end
is a Duron 1Ghz with a GeForce FX5200, the back end is an Athlon 2800+
with MX440 on-board video. The back end has two Twinhan VisionPlus
DVB-T cards.

Another thing I noticed, is when watching TV on the backend, XFree86 CPU
usage jumps to 3.7% and memory usage jumps to 10% (on 512MB system).
The mythbackend and mythfrontend rarely registers for any real CPU usage
(staying around 0.3% at all times).

So, is the solution to purchase a GF FX5200 to go in the back-end? And
is it possible to give more priority to the error correction of the DVB
stream? I only use the box for MythTV so I'm not fussed if it's sitting
at 50% CPU when watching and/or recording TV, provided it's watchable.

On my Ubuntu system, the go7007 firmware (the second firmware loaded)
doesn't load before the go7007-usb module, the fix for that was to
modprobe -r go7007-usb after the firmware got loaded, and then
modprobe go7007-usb to load the module again, and everything works.

I've been having a problem for a while (but only since switching to

and I cannot reproduce it, nor do I have any idea as to what causes it.
I know that the problem is during recording, because if I export the
.nuv to another format, the problem remains. Has anybody else had this
problem?

I am having either the same problem as you or something similar (also
happened since 0.17) - part way through a recording, quite randomly, sound
drops out totally and video slows right down. Eventually (perhaps 5-10
minutes) it speeds up again, but audio doesn't come back - it's very
frustrating.

That's exactly the same problem I'm having Philip. I'm in Australia and
it's only occurring on 3 channels (9, 7 and 10), but doesn't happen on
2 or SBS.

Are you using dvb? For me, when this happens, the mpeg stream goes bad for
a second or two (as if I've got a low signal, but I don't think I do),
audio then cuts out and video goes slow. It seems to happen quite
randomly, and has happened when I've been watching live tv - I changed
channels, changed back and it was fine again.
I am using dvb (two Twinhan DST cards), and it does seem to happen when
I get poor signal for a second or two (either due to signal problems or
the back-end not keeping up with error correction). I haven't noticed
it while watching live tv, but I don't use the box to watch live tv.

To use Myth's volume control with ALSA it's as simple as

In /etc/mplayer.conf, set "ao=alsa:device=mixed-analog"
If you use arts in KDE (which is the default), tell it to use the

[mythtv-users] Can't schedule program anymore after deleting channel line up

2005-05-01 Thread Steve Malenfant
I had a problem with the broadcast listing of my zip code. So I
switched over to a zip code near me. I got my listing right after
running mythfilldatabase.

The problem is that I can't schedule any programs anymore. I see them
in "Recording Schedules" in mythweb, but nothing shows up in
"scheduled recordings" in mythweb.

Seems like there is no way to delete the "Recording Schedules" in
mythfrontend when this happens...

I restarted mythbackend, rebooted the machine, just can't figure it
out... I'm still running 0.17.20050130-1 which has been really stable
for me until today.

Should I zap my database completely now?

I have an 802.11g network, and regularly have 2 SDTV streams playing
simultaneously without any problems. I'm using D-Link DWL-G650 PCMCIA
cards in the laptops (frontends), and a D-Link router which is
connected to the backend/frontend by 100Mbs ethernet. Never had a
problem with the network. I use the madwifi open source driver.

2005-05-01 Thread Nathan Ford
My backend is attached to the network via cat5. My only frontend is
hooked to the bridge.

The WET54gS5 is the only device currently active on my wireless
network. I have no problems playing recordings and watching live-tv.
For testing purposes I ran a cable down the stairs to connect it via
cat5, and for the most part they behaved the same. I have stuttering
when i bring up OSD's and stuff, but I think that is the M1 and
not network lag (that and I don't have XvMC working yet, 70-80% CPU
load) FF/RW I think was a touch faster. But nothing to drop wireless
for.

There are other wireless networks in the area, but I don't think i'm
conflicting with any. I also have 128bit WEP enabled. My GF is getting
a laptop soon so i'll see how it performs with the laptop generating
heavy load.

I just tested sending a file again and got 2.0Mb/sec to 2.7Mb/sec.

I have a Dlink DWL-520+ that is working quite well under Fedora Core 3. I'm
using the acx100 drivers from http://acx100.sourceforge.net, which have to be
compiled, but its nothing too tricky. Once installed, I startup the
connection to my Linksys WRT-54GS running HyperWRT with the following in
rc.local.

/usr/share/acx/acx100/scripts/start_net
iwconfig wlan0 essid xxx rate 11Mb/s encr

lspci shows:
02:0e.0 Network controller: Texas Instruments ACX 100 22Mbps Wireless
Interface

My system is a combined front/backend so I only need enough speed to reach the
net for updates/weather/news/etc. Its been very stable from 3 rooms away from
the router inside an entertainment center.

Happy to help if you need it.

Many thanks,
Lee

I haven't had any experience with the old style MCE remotes, but I
recently worked with setting up one of the new style remotes with
pretty good success. I'm not sure how far back you can go with lirc,
but I know lirc 0.7.0 and newer has a driver for the old style MCE
remote. If you're comfortable building and installing packages from
source code, it's really very easy to do with lirc. I haven't had
much luck getting the ATrpms.net lirc packages to work in my setup,
so I can't really help if you prefer to go that route.

I didn't find any detailed how-to's on the MCE remote either, so I'll
describe what my brother and I did to get the new style remote
working. Hopefully this can get you going as well.

I obtained the lirc 0.7.0 source from the lirc web site:
http://www.lirc.org

- Extract the source tarball and then configure and build from the
extracted source directory like this:

# ./configure --with-kerneldir=/lib/modules/`uname -r`/build
--with-driver=mceusb
# make
# make install

The install should copy the correct lircd.conf file to
/etc/lircd.conf.

- You'll also want to put the following in /etc/modprobe.conf:
alias char-major-61 lirc_mceusb
- I'm not sure if this is really required, but I saw it in some lirc
instructions somewhere. Create the /etc/udev/rules.d/lirc.rules and
put this in it:

KERNEL="lirc[0-9]*",NAME="lirc%n"
KERNEL="lirc0", SYMLINK="lirc"
- Then make sure the usb receiver is plugged in and load the lirc
modules:

# modprobe lirc_mceusb
- Try out lircd and irw to see if it works:
# lircd -n &
# irw
You should see a message printed indicating that lircd accepted a
new client connection. Then if you press buttons on the remote you
should see messages indicating which buttons are being pressed. If
that doesn't work, you may need to reboot. If you reboot with the
usb receiver plugged in, the lirc modules should automatically load
which you can verify with the lsmod command:

# lsmod | grep lirc
lirc_mceusb10884 1
lirc_dev 13388 1 lirc_mceusb
then try the lircd and irw commands again.
One last thing to note. I'm not sure if this is due to the driver
for the new style MCE remote, lirc, the kernel, or my own
incompetence, but we couldn't get lirc working correctly with version
0.7.1 of lirc or the 2.6.10-1.770 kernel from ATrpms. We had to use
lirc 0.7.0 and kernel version 2.6.11.7 built from source.

Hope that helps,
David

[mythtv-users] Suttery video on Mac Mini?

2005-05-01 Thread Piers Kittel
Hello all,
Got a Mac Mini, outputting video via S-Video using the adaptor, though
all kinds of video output (DVD, MythTV) is very slightly suttery - not
very noticeable, but gets annoying over time, and it's more noticeable
when the camera moves quickly. I'm a bit surprised a 1.2GHz G4 can't
make DVD playback completely smooth - even my 750MHz x86 laptop with 8MB
video memory and no DVD acceleration can make DVD playback perfectly
smooth. As the juttery issue is the same on both MythTV and DVD, I
think it's an issue of the computer itself rather than the individual
software packages - or am I doing something wrong? I tried my Mini on
my mate's LCD TV which has DVI input, but the video is exactly the same
so it can't be the S-Video adaptor.

I might be trying out OSX Tiger to see if there's any improvements, but
am not expecting owt.

Also, do anyone have a colour profile perfectly suited for TV viewing -
as I can't seem to get a good balance on the colour on my TV? When
watching snooker (not by choice), all balls looked nearly the same
colour - the green on the table was overpowering the colours in the
snooker balls...

Thanks very much for your help in advance
Cheers - Piers

Hi all,

I've managed to install the drivers for the Plextor Convertx, but I
don't know what to put in the "Video device:" field in the Capture

[mythtv-users] MythWeb shows NO DATA

2005-05-01 Thread Moasat
I've been having this problem for about a week now. In April, when I
searched for a program using Mythweb, it would only shows programs in April.
April 30 seemed to be some magical day that mythweb would look beyond.
There was guide data for May, I could see it in the DB and the Frontend
guide could see it. I could select shows to record from the front end but
Mythweb refused to see them. I thought I'd wait until May 1 to see how the
system would react. Now, when I just show the listings, it will show
programs for maybe the first 30 minutes, then it shows NO DATA for
everything beyond that for all channels.

I've always used CVS and have been staying pretty up-to-date with it. I
think I'm current up until a few days ago. Nothing has had any effect
though.

When I search the archives, I saw one instance where someone seemed to have
the same problem but their only solution was to reboot a few times and the
problem went away. That's not helping on my end.

Up until the last week of April, everything was going along just fine. I've
got the permissions set correctly. I can see all of my recorded shows and
the thumbnails. Lately, I've even been able to find a few shows. For
example, I want to find American Dad. I can search for America and it turns
up a few hits. I can search for American and it turns up a few different
hits. But when I search for American Dad, I get nothing. Pretty weird.
Anyone have any suggestions?

HDTV channels are on a different card (pchdtv3k as opposed to the svideo

First I would like to thank all of the developers and every one else that

freestyle, pcHDTV 3K, FC3 set up via Jarod's guide, capturing DirceTV via
s-video and OTA for the pcHDTV3K. On to the questions:
1. Is there any way for a remote frontend to use the backend's dvd, I guess
similar to using a remote tape device for backup? It would be really nice to
be able to start watching a dvd in the family room and then bookmark the spot
- esc, move to the bedroom, select play dvd and pick up where I left off ( I
know not with mplayer or xine, see question 2).
2. Why isn't mythtv the default player for VCD and DVD, it seems to play my
small collection of videos just fine, which include .vob, and various .avi
(xvid, divx5)? If I use mythtv as the default player for dvd/video does
bookmarking work?
3. Why can't I change inputs from inside the EPG? The backend knows how to
do this. If I turn on my TV it defaults to DirecTV, which is what I want,
but if I browse the EPG looking for something to watch or am just flipping
around, it would be really nice if I could select an HDTV channel. Just
basic channel surfing, I'm thinking of consolidating all 3 of my DirecTV
receivers in a closet with a master backend/family room frontned.
4. In mythfrontend setup - appearance - screen size, is there any way I can
type in numbers as oppsed to the left/right arrow increasing/decreasing the
size? I also use my PC as a remote frontend and some things I would like to
watch in a window, some things I would like to watch full screen. Is this
something that I missed?

Thanks for any help or pointers you can give on these, and thanks again for
mythtv and all the help from the forums.

Well, it seems that all respondents are pretty unhappy with wireless
support. As for me, my wife and I will be moving in a month or two, so
I'll try to limp along until then. At that point, I'll see if I can
position my TV near the wireless router, so I can run CAT5 from the

just fine.

If _ANYONE_ has had a good experience with Linux wireless, please post

Re: [mythtv-users] Re: Transcoding and other questions

2005-05-01 Thread emory
That's actually a good question. For me, for a given program, whether
myth skips commercials during playback is kind of random. Sometimes it
will skip all the commercials, sometimes it doesn't. This is with the
"Automatically skip all commercials" option checked. The commercials
are being flagged correctly because when I type "E" during playback to
bring up the edit controls and "Z" to mark the commercials as
cutpoints, the commercials appear correctly. If I type "E" again to
resume playback, then the commercials are skipped properly. So in the
end, it's not a big deal (E-Z-E) to get commercial skipping working if
they werne't before, but it is weird that I sometimes have to do this.

this is for Myth 0.17 on FC2, by the way.

Re: [mythtv-users] Setting up USB MCE remote in LIRC?

2005-05-01 Thread David Sims
For the new style remote I had to download a new driver, which is not
yet part of the lirc distribution. Written by Martin Blatter the lirc
driver for the new style remote can be downloaded at
http://blatter.com/mceusb/. There's a tarball of the driver, an
example lircrc file for Myth, and some installation instructions.
Actually I think he has three different versions of his driver there.
I just downloaded the newest one.

To use that new driver you'll need to build lirc 0.7.0 from source
(0.7.1 didn't work very well for me). Just download the lirc source
tarball and extract it (if you haven't already), then extract the
tarball from Martin Blatter on top of it. Then configure, build, and
install lirc as I described in the previous post.

With the combination of kernel 2.6.11.7, lirc 0.7.0, and Martin
Blatter's driver, the new style remote seems to work quit reliably.

it working (include Jarod), but I can't find any how-to's or crib
sheets. Being a total Linux noob, this leave me at a loss, can
anyone point me in the right direction?

KERNEL="lirc[0-9]*",NAME="lirc%n"
KERNEL="lirc0", SYMLINK="lirc"

Hope that helps,
David

Via a monitor mplayer, xine and ogle all look great. Sound
doesn't get out of sync with mplayer. I've used the following
commands to test both from the 350 and from the monitor:

ogle -u cli /dev/dvd
mplayer dvd:// -fs -zoom -vo x11
xine -f -I -V xshm --audio-driver alsa --no-logo --no-splash dvd://

I've tried various settings on mplayer and xine (still messing with
Xine a bit as I've not used it as much). With mplayer I've tried
-ao oss etc, -ni, and of course framedrop, which helps but then you
get dropped frames.

[mythtv-users] Announce: Gentoo live CVS ebuild updated

2005-05-01 Thread Preston Crow
http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=66337

I've updated my live CVS ebuilds for Gentoo. They only check out one
copy of the plugins repository, and all the modules share that copy.

There's a nuvexport-svn ebuild, too which builds from the Subversion
repository.

The only change from the Gentoo ebuilds besides using the live source
repositories is to allow mmx for mythtv-cvs and mythfrontend-cvs.

I'll try to update them as needed when the ebuild break with new
development--I'm sorry it took me so long this time. There's no
particular reason to update them simply because of a release, and
releases are essentially meaningless when running from CVS.

My DVD drive is considerably older, maybe only 4-6X. I wonder

Playing without audio (-nosound) produced a similar picture to
all the other players, but the audio doesn't go out of sync now ;)
And there also isn't a single error, so you might be on to something

I ran into this same problem with my FC3 box. I have two of them and
they
are pretty much identical, so it was confusing. However, one of them was a
clean
FC3 install and the other, the one with the problem, was an FC1->FC3 upgrade
box.
It was late at night, but I seem to recall that the problem I was having was
that /usr/lib/qt-3.1 was still in my /etc/ld.so.conf. I removed that and then
everything built fine. Maybe not the problem you are seeing, but I figured
it was worth mentioning...

Hmm.. thanks for the reply.

I do have myththemes-0.18-103.at installed, along with several mythtv-theme*,
but none that match blue. I'm not seeing a blue rpm on the atrpm mirrors
either. Bummer.

Looking around at my database, I haven't yet found any references to themes.
You don't happen to know the table it would be in, do you?

Note that I haven't yet run mythfilldatabase because I haven't been successful
with the mythtvsetup.

As you can see from your log it couldn't find the 'blue' so quit.

Possibly it would be better if either the setup screen wasn't themed or
there was an extra option added to mythtv-setup to change the theme.

[mythtv-users] mythtvsetup exits after leave/delete channel screen

2005-05-01 Thread Todd Flinders
First let me apologize, because I know the qt problem has been discussed quite
a bit on the list. Because of that I'm using Ctrl-Enter to make selections,
and that's successful.

However, my mythtvsetup exits after the screen "Would you like to clear all
program data and channel settings before starting configuration?..." Either
answer yields the same results. I've been searching the archives, but with
no luck.

I see someone else had a similar problem:

Does anyone know if there's a way to get get past this second screen? Thanks

[mythtv-users] Hardware suggestions for a dedicated frontend

2005-05-01 Thread Dean Wilson
Several months ago, I successfully installed a mythTV frontend/backend
with both HD and SD capture cards -- now I'm working on a dedicated
frontend for another room.

I thought that I could use an old Athlon 1800 that I had lying around
- which works well for SD, but not for HD. (Unfortunately, while the
TV in the other room isn't HD, I would still like to be able to watch
the shows I've recorded in HD, so I still have to be able to decode
the HD stream.) I have an Nvidia 5200FX, and I tried enabling XvMC -
but for some reason, playback only works for up to a minute or so
before the entire system freezes, and has to be rebooted. I've tried
quite a few solutions -- newer/older Nvidia drivers, tweaking NFS,
rpm/source alsa drivers, all without success. Finally I'm considering
upgrading the hardware so that I can decode the stream without XvMC.

So (unless someone has a suggestion to fix my current problem) my
question is this: given my current system, would it be better for me
to get a cheap motherboard with a celeron processor (Intel supposedly
decodes video better than AMD), or just to upgrade my Athlon? (And if
I upgrade the Athlon, how high should I go for decoding a single HD
stream?)

Thanks for your help,
~Dean

Hurray! I was planning on fixing it myself when I found the time _AND_ when I

I last looked)

I'll test the patch - you might want to post it to the dev list too?

Commercial flagging doesn't remove anything from the recorded show,
whether you transcode or not. It just marks the points where the
commercials begin/end in the database to enable you to skip the

Hmm... you should probably do the following:

hdparm -c3 -u1 /dev/hdc

That'll set unmaskirq to on and set IO_support to 32-bit. That'll help.
Also, hook up a monitor and see if mplayer still complains. That'll
narrow down the problem to whether it's the 350, mplayer, or the drive.

the same error with mplayer "YOUR SYSTEM IS TOO SLOW TO PLAY

available, so I've got to use -vo x11 on my mplayer. I'm trying
ogle now, and while it hasn't completely died like mplayer there
are obvious frame drops. CPU load is fairly low, .5-.66, I would
have expected it to be a lot more considering the cpu is having to
do all the decoding.
If you think Fry's is dangerous I would recommend you avoid any Apple

12" PowerBook, and fresh copies of Tiger I'm wondering where I left
my sanity last Friday. On the other hand, it's been a hell of a fun
geek-out-weekend.

Regarding your play back issue, most likely I would have to say it's
a DMA problem. You've got plenty of CPU to do what you want to and in
fact I use both xine and mplayer with a 16x DVD drive to get flawless
playback.

Another suggestion once you're 100% sure DMA isn't the issue. You
might try also to play a DVD w/o any audio just to see what happens.
Maybe the problem is more an issue with the way you're decoding the
sound which is causing mplayer to drop frames to keep the video and
audio in sync.

Lastly, try using mplayer and playing a DVD from a terminal outside
of MythTV. The nice verbose output of mplayer is great for
understanding the problem. I'm sure no one would mind you pasting
that to the list.

I already know that I need to be able to control xine as well as mythtv with

can't have normal lirc running to control xine at the same time as mythtv

To control two apps you either need to hope/ensure that xine and mythtv use

Re: [mythtv-users] Anyone happy with wireless?

2005-05-01 Thread Mark Knecht
So I guess that's the real question. If you make a wireless network
and let's assume that the only think on that network is MythTV - will
it be good enough to watch Myth at a location remote from the backend
machine? If not there's no purpose to spending this money.

It seems to me that the 2MB/S or 3MB/S should be enough. Is that much
agreed to or are there other problems?

For us wireless has been a big disappointment even for browsing the
web. Watching MythTV is way beyond what we've accomplished with
ndiswrapper solutions. I'd love to try one of these LinkSys Bridges,
but only if it really works for Myth.

Thanks,
Mark

Commercial flagging doesn't remove anything from the recorded show,
whether you transcode or not. It just marks the points where the
commercials begin/end in the database to enable you to skip the
commercials during playback.

I've got this working. The initial learning/setup was a PITA.
And one of my biggest problems is that I've got an older satellite
box that doesn't have a direct serial or other type connection so
I've had to use the two lirc instance setup, one to receive for the
PVR-350 and one to send back out to the satellite.

It is working quite well, only major complaint is the speed in which
channels are changed, it has to jump through a lot of hoops to do it

was good for the basics but when it came to streaming the vob's it
often break down even, also interference was causing speed drop outs
so it would renegotiate at 12 or so for a wile, this would make
streams unusable even if a I set s huge cache on mp layer. So I sucked

Re: [mythtv-users] Jumping to end of show

2005-05-01 Thread Juan Jesús García de Soria Lucena
Hi.2005/5/1, Ryan Steffes <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>:
I've had a problem where occasionally my front end crashes and afterthat the show I was watching will cause the show to play normally whenI'm just watching it, but trying to jump forward will cause the showto jump almost to the end and refuse to rewind passed that point.

My  usual use of MythTV is to record shows, and then comm-flag & transcode them to MPEG-4.

I'm seeing that an important number of my recordings have "this"
problem: instead of allowing true fast-forward / rewind, they somehow
seem to "stick" to a little number of possible positions in the stream,
so that any skipping (ffwd, rew, comm-skip, etc) ends up moving the
playing position to one of these points.

That's very annoying, since this totally defeats the skipping functionality (I'm forced to use time-stretch in order to skip).

Somehow, too, for some recordings, even while skipping works, any skip
seems to stream a brutal quantity of data through the
hard-disk/network... Is it possible that I'm having some problems with
frame-indexing in the video file or something?

If someone knows what's happening, please help :)

I purchased a new motherboard/cpu combo upgrading the AMD Athlon 1800+ to an
Intel P4 2.4GHz. Spent about 4 hours getting it all
working again, verifying that I had basic MythTV system working before even
trying the DVD. This morning I tried the DVD and still
the same error with mplayer "YOUR SYSTEM IS TOO SLOW TO PLAY THIS". Er.
I'm using a PVR-350 and of course don't have xvideo

This was the relevant hint. Thanks, I usually use 386 kernels on the
epia, but using Cyrix/C3 as processor type activated the
CONFIG_X86_CMPXCHG

2.6.11 works fine. A change in processor type and a make-kpkg was all
that was needed. via-drm compiles fine afterwards.

Unfortunately I didn't get away without recompiling. Luckily I don't
have to compile on the epia. BTW, make -j on a mosix cluster is not
race-safe! ;-)

[mythtv-users] Bob + OpenGL sync: Still some ghosting for small fast moving objects

HI!
I am using Myth 0.18, Bob Deint., OpenGL Sync, Video as Timebase, NVidia

For example in car racing, but not in all cases, seems to be dependant

Anyone has a solution to this? Is this a bug in Myth or is it just not

Re: [mythtv-users] What is "native LIRC"?

2005-05-01 Thread Greg Grotsky
Kind of off topic but I think there would be a huge advantage for
using Myth's native LIRC support if there was an a way to assign
remote button presses with specific Myth functions.

Like xine for example, instead of programming a button press for a
specific key on the keyboard; you would program a xine function with a
button press. Here's a snippit from my .lircrc as an example:

begin
  prog = mythtv
  button = Aspect
  config = W
   repeat = 0
end

begin
 prog   = xine
 button = Aspect
 config = ToggleAspectRatio
  repeat = 3
end

You can see that I'm programming the same button but for xine it's
assigned to "ToggleAspectRatio" instead of the W key. With the
function-based LIRC config, you could assign stuff like "config =
MythMusic.NextSong" or "config = MythTV.EPG", etc.

Except that neither is really a downside since you already have
irxevent if you have lirc. Andhow often do you want a keypress to go
to something other than the main window?

The advantages of NOT using native lirc are:
1. You can use any app that accepts keyboard input without having to
worry about it supporting lirc.
2. You can tie scripts to remote keys.

Here it's the same. Learned to live with it. :)

2005-05-01 Thread Mike Brown
I have read some about this. Theoretically you can use any card you
want to record the video, but none that I know of will change the
channels directly. There is some stuff out there about serial control
of the DTV box by using a special serial cable from your computer to
the data port on the back of your box.  I was actually planning on
doing this over the summer when I'm at home because my parents have DTV
and when I'm at school I have cable.  I would recommend a
card(PVR-250/350) and use the s-video input and use the serial cable to
change channels etc.

[reformatted for clarity]

This is how the device gets initialized; when first connected, a new
firmware is pushed into the USB controller, which then disconnects from
the bus and reconnects with a new USB ID. So at least the hotplug scripts
are installed correctly.

Following this you should see a message like "go7007: registering new
Plextor PX-TV402U-NA" or something. Since you're not, it looks like the
modules are installed incorrectly. Try running "modprobe go7007-usb" to
load the modules manually. -Nathan

[mythtv-users] HDTV Playback Audio Juddering Problem, PBS HD only

2005-05-01 Thread John Freer
Hi all,

Having a problem playing back the audio on my local ATSC PBS HD
station. I'm doing S/PDIF with AC3 pass through. Works great on
ABC, NBC, CBS, etc. For example, I watched harry potter last night
on ABC, and it played back great with DD content, etc.

I'm experiencing "juddering audio". When someone's talking on screen
it sounds like when Chris Farly says "Luke, you are my father" into
the fan in Tommy Boy. Weird. CPU averages 25% free. XP2600 400FSB,
8X AGP MX440, 7174 Drivers. No XvMC. Content plays back fine so
long as I'm not recording with a bttv card or flagging in the
background.

I'm using ALSA:default as the output device, and using the .asoundrc
that's on the digital sound howto. Other than that, just using
up-to-date mythtv rpms.

Here's my --verbose playback, audio log snippets:

You could always make the dialup process silent, easy to do with the

Actually, I use DVB-T so I get all my EPG over the air. I was thinking more
of MythMusic/MythDVD/MythWeather/MythNews, without being able to initiate a
dialup connection from the remote these are all partially or fully crippled
for me.

[mythtv-users] OT: WinTV PCI-FM model 747 with a conextant chip: Has anyone done this?

2005-05-01 Thread Fredrik Karlsson
Hi,

I bought a WinTV PCI-FM (model 747) that I cannot get to tune
properly. I've installed
the snapshot from 2005-04-26 of the v4l driver cx88, and all my known
channels does not tune at all. I have a PVR-350 installed too..

Does anyone know what to do? I'm in Sweden, so I'm using PAL-BG.

I post some info from dmesg and lsmod below. The post-install commands
I have used is:

v4lctl -c /dev/video1 -v 1 volume mute off
v4lctl -c /dev/video1 -v 1 setnorm PAL-BG

Simply delete them and then rescan your music folder via the setup pages.
Also works for the videos folder.

As far as dialing programs the only one you have to let run is
mythfilldataabase but can can set it to dial every other day and save some
money.

I'm having a blue line also and tried xvattr but you have to it
installed. The problem is you need Xv to get xvattr to work. I looked
into Xv and saw a whole lot of problems trying to find all the
dependencies to get Xv to work, just to get xvattr to run to remove a
blue line. So I'm waiting until I have a day to work on this. Anyone
have an easier way to install Xv? It is not listed on ATrpm's website.

cinternet is the command line counterpart to KInternet, I should really have
mentioned that this relies on using KInternet to manage for the dialup
connection.

Nathan,

There is some progress. If I unplug the usb connector
and plug it back in, something (the driver ? or some
part of the driver. I thought the driver itself was
called "go7007") gets loaded by "hotplug".

Please pardon me for seeming to be so dense, but what is

 "cinternet"

A Google and a search of these archives didn't turn up anything
that seemed relevant.

Thanks.

So 3MB/S == 27Mb/S or about half the advertized speed. I suspect that
this is pretty good with network overhead.
