you can't do it without changing the code

perhaps
- when there are no tuners available:
- the "Watch TV" menu item should:
start showing the most recent recording at the top of "all recordings"

and only when the user tries to change the channel or to do picture in picture
or something it could complain that there are no more tuners

hmm,
i wonder if "picture in picture" while watching a recording would be useful
i.e. put LiveTV or a recording into PIP while watching a recording

you can delete while you watch by hitting D
OR
you can set mythtv to "prompt at end of watching a recording"
and/or to prompt "when exiting a recording"
OR
you can hit "right arrow" followed by "up arrow" and the "left arrow"
while a recording is selected in the "watch recordings" screen

that might be nice, ie keep the livetv buffer full of the last channel watched
also with 2 tuners, the last 2 channels watched could be buffered
ie when you go channel up, it would actually go to the next channel on the
next tuner, then you could go back to the last channel and rewind!

would be pretty cool, but alas pretty useles for most ppl,
as most ppl don't watch livetv with mythtv

i hate that too
there is a setting for "livetv buffer change warnings"
to workaround some related issues.

No, I suspect it was done this way to accomodate multiple tuners and
multiple frontends

2) Some of the operations on my recordings are done from one menu

When in the watch recordings screen push the 'm' button or the right

among other tasks

Not that I know of, though I *think* if you press 'r' this will start
recording what watch tv is currently on and you can then come back to it
in the recordings menu

4) If I watch TV and send "record" command, it records from the

[mythtv-users] mysterious disappearing recording

2005-05-17 Thread Philip Nelson
Last night myth (0.18) was supposed to record a program - and from the backend
it looks like it started - but it doesn't show up the recorded programs list,
and the corresponding .nuv file doesn't exist either. From the backend:

2005-05-17 20:58:02.570 Started recording "All Saints" on channel: 1011 on
cardid: 1, sourceid 1
2005-05-17 20:58:02.577 scheduler: Last message repeated 1 times
2005-05-17 20:58:02.581 scheduler: Schedule Change

There is no corresponding "Finished recording" message in the log (also notice
in that log the "scheduler: Last message repeated 1 times" - that sounds a
bit odd, doesn't happen for any of my other recordings)

So I don't know what happened here, weird.
Any ideas?

and recombine with mplex.
I'm assuming you're using a PVR-x50. If so, see:
http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/mythtv/users/128948#128948 ,
specifically Nick's suggestion (ProjectX).

Command line programs would be fine (preferred).
Unfortunately no one has been able to find a "traditional"
command-line *nix application that will fix the sync to account for
changing A/V sync within the IvyTV recordings (or, at least, if they
have found one, they haven't told anyone on the IvyTV list :).
Yes they have...

So now onto how to do this in command line: It turns
out ProjectX has a CLI (command line interface). It's
a little tricky to figure out, but this now works
great for me:
java -jar -c
 -n -o

By "traditional" command-line *nix application, I meant an application
that's easily called from a script and allows the use of pipelining (see
http://www.faqs.org/docs/artu/ch01s06.html#id2877684 in ESR's The Art of
Unix Programming--full book at http://www.faqs.org/docs/artu/ ). Given
that definition, ProjectX does not fit the bill. However, it works--and
seems to be the only program known to work--which is why I recommended
it and recommended reading the thread from which you pulled the above

his/her own decisions.

Re: [mythtv-users] Funny commercial behavior with 0.18...

2005-05-17 Thread Juan Jesús García de Soria Lucena
I had to switch from RTJpeg -> MPEG4 transcoding to direct MPEG4
encoding when capturing, due to some recordings being only able to
"jump" (either fast-forward, rewind or commercial skip) to a given
point.

I was being forced to use time-stretch in order to skip, which is far from satisfactory.
May this have something to do with "large files", with which I mean
files larger than 2 GB? It seems to happen on long recordings.

Actually, the copy prevention systems don't do anything about that.
Since it just takes one copy to get out into the underground nets, and
they can't make an uncrackable system, the only thing these systems do
is make it harder for ordinary users to copy -- but most importantly,
they make it harder for smaller entrants to compete in the media player
markets and impossible for open source developers to compete.

Actually not true. They make more money now from cinema release than
they did (in constant dollars) in the old days, and on top of that
make even more from home video and tv rights. (TV rights of course
don't stop copying, and nor has home video release stopped copying in
any effective way.)

So they have a thriving industry right now without copy prevention but
they are both worried about losing it -- and on keeping a lock on
the tech.

Actually, the tech-savvy folks at the movie studios know perfectly well
their DRM is crackable and won't stop copies from getting into the
underground P2P nets. I sympathise with their plight actually in
ways even they don't know (every dime that ever fed me has come from
media and copyright businesses) but freedom to innovate in tech is
even more important.

DRM requires a system where the default is no copying and only certain
exceptions are allowed. That precludes open tools and open source. It's
hard to imagine any DRM, even the most permissive, not shutting linux
tools out of the media playing space. I have imagined some methods but
they remain ugly and still shut out the innovation that this space is
about.

I would suggest a couple things:

1. Move to a newer kernel. I had some strangeness with 2.6.9 / 2.6.10
along the way with IO (air2pc / pvr-250 / 4-drive raid5) and moving to
2.6.11 cured almost all of them.

2. Check your IRQ's. lspci -v and check for things sharing the same
IRQ. When you're faciing an IO problem sharing can become a big issue.
This was another key for me in removing IO problems.

3. What's the RAM clock on your machine? Is it 133 or 200? Should be
133 to make the PC2100 happy.

Brad,
I agree with much of what you say but, agree with it or not, the
folks that make the movies feel they have a right to protect their
content. They paid millions of buck to get the movie made and do not
want indiscriminate numbers of perfect digital copies being made and
given away. As I'm sure you know the ticket office returns for movies
in the States are on the order of a few billion a year. That's less
revenue than one moderate semiconductor company like AMD. The returns
from DVDs is far higher so without the DVD revenue the studios lose
money go out of business and we don't get movies in any format. As
long as Open Source tools continue to give all users the capability to
make perfect digital copies of any source material there is going to
be disagreements and issues like this.

That said I expect that over time the cable boxes will get much
better about this. There shouldn't be any reason that I cannot make a
copy of news shows, high school sports events or other low revenue
generating shows for time shifting and I expect that cable boxes will
make this stuff available over time. In the mean time it's not
surprising to me that they take a somewhat draconian view and say all
or nothing.

First off, in its current state, getting mythburn running and actually
burning a DVD is *not* going to be as simple as running install.sh .
Read on

Ensure you have all of the prerequesites installed first. - start
here: http://www.knoppmythwiki.org/index.php?page=MythTVBurn_Scripts_HowTo

You want to upgrade to latest CVS *first*, and then carefully review
the install scripts to ensure that paths are correct for your mythtv
install and your location of web content and you may find some
discrepancies between what is in /usr/local/ and what is in /usr. The
defaults are correct for knoppmyth and MythTV 0.17. You'll have to do
some hacking to get the mythweb internationalization correct with
MythWeb in 0.18+

Once you've done that, you'll want to test out the web interface and
try out burning and check out the mythburn logfiles each step of the
way - it's pretty good at telling you *why* it's failing. Start out by
not trying to cut commercials.

If you get NTSC broadcasts, you''ll want to disable replex and enable
mplex, and you'll probably end up with thumbnails of shows with
inverse colors and upside down. You'll need to change two lines on
Itranscode statements and add/remove a "-z" and a "-k"

Most of this is documented here:
http://www.knoppmythwiki.org/index.php?page=MythTVBurn_Scripts_HowTo

You *might* have some luck posting to a new thread like this one -
http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=3848

But... sadly, it seems that since the phpBBS at mythsettopbox.tv got
hacked, and the previous threads lost, the CVS updates to mythtvburn
have significantly decreased (none in 2 months :( )

If only I could transcode and tcrequant *any* recordings - not just
mpeg2 - and squeeze an arbitrary number/length/size to fit onto a dvd,
I'd be *really* happy.

Actually pure archival was contemplated in the 5C spec. If a DVR
records on removable media then the data on the media was to be
encrypted but carries flags that say it can be archived. (I forget the
actual flag names.) That way you could keep a backup copy off
premises. There were copy once flags, copy multiple, copy unlimited,
etc., that defined how copies of copies would be handled. In this
model there was no degradation of the program material and but the
copies were managed as per the desires of the owner of the material.
(The studios - not the hardware people.)

One thing that may not be clear to people is that the final decryption
of the program material was always going to be done as close to the
display as possible thus ensuring that there wasn't as much chance of
people using computers to steal copies of movies as happens today.
Again, you could make a copy of a DVD in your PC if you had the media
to copy, but you weren't going to be able to make multiple copies in
parallel by setting up banks of DVD writers and driving them in
parallel from the same 1394 output. (As pirates are doing today with
non-HD material.)

There was a lot of work done on this stuff. It was a really different
sort of working group consisting of people from the 5C's as well as
all the major Hollywood studios.

The CAM can typically only handle one stream at once, so it wouldn't

Well, that is where you configure the transcoder. If you go into the
"From MPEG-2" transcoder, you get some more choices about codec,
bitrate, etc.

Currently, no.

I don't know what adding "Profile Groups" is for; I've always thought
that you get one group per capture card. But I don't know for sure,
because I only have one kind of capture card (HD-3000).

[mythtv-users] Frontend Hanging

2005-05-17 Thread Daniel Milani
Hello,
I am running Myth 0.18 on FC3. I had myth running fine with version
0.17. After I upgraded, the frontend hangs as it initializes. I tried
rerunning mythtv-setup. That progresses through the first two screens:
Do you want to save you capture card info, and do you want to save your
channel info? Then after that it just hangs. I was running G.A.N.T.
and have read about the problems some people have had with that, but
don't think that is the issue. I am not sure where to start diagnosing
this problem. What do people suggest?

Thanks,

It is this decision which has this community justifiably up in arms.

As the systems are being architected, open source tools like MythTV
can't compete with the box from the cable company, even though the
software is free as in beer too. For perfectly rational reasons people
like you will get the cable/satellite provided PVR or other blessed
PVR, reducing demand for the open source tools which in turn limits the
number of people who will develop for them and test them and support
them.

Yet here's were a lot of the innovation is coming from.

The dead link goes back to the old forums at the KnoppMyth site
pre-hack (the forums were destroyed by phpBB worm a while back).
There was a very, very long thread there about MythBurn, and you can
still get some of the pages in Google's cache, at least I could the
last time I tried.

The install.sh is built with KnoppMyth in mind. If you are running
KnoppMyth, you should be good to go. If you use another distro,
you'll have to edit some stuff in the install.sh script as well as a
few of the other scripts.

I'm using MySQL 5.0.4-beta-standard installed using RPMs from MySQL.
What I ended up doing was using ` around each instance of "repeat"

I'm still getting an error:

but this error isn't causing the database to not fill.
Now I only have to deal with the fact that I have sound but only a blue

Oh, I see - there's no way to pick what type of transcoding to do?

If this is the case, does that mean that I have to assign one of
(Default, High Quality, Low Quality, Live TV) to be the automatic
transcode case? There's no way to assign that trait to a recording
group?

Should I not be adding a Profile Group at all, if that is the case?

Recording Group - I believe this is just a way for you to categorize
your recordings to make navigation easier. For example, in MythWeb,
you can sort your recordings by "Recording Group" (e.g., Movies,
Cooking, Crime).

Recording Profile - settings for how your recordings eventually end up
on disk. This is where you set up your quality settings based on your
desired quality/disk-space requirements.

Profile Group - I don't know, since I only have one, but I think you
get one Profile Group per capture card in the system, plus a
"Transcoders" group for transcoding.

They all start out with the same values when you initially install
MythTV. It is meant for you to tweak the settings later on for making
disk-space/quality trade-offs.

Depending on your capture card, that is correct. I guess some cards
allow you to encode to a variety of codecs (MPEG-4/RTjpeg, etc.).

The "automatically transcode" will pick the transcoder based on how
your recording was captured. In your case, since everything is getting
captured and encoded to MPEG-2, you will be using the "From MPEG-2"
transcoder.

That's exactly what I want to do. I have a PVR-250, and I transcoded to
MPEG-4 to save space and cut commercials. Now I have a friend that
wants to see the show, and I'm trying to make a copy for him.

All I've read in the archives suggests that it could be done if someone
wrote some more code to do it, but such code doesn't exist. The problem
area is in keeping the audio sync.

Personally, I would consider it a huge win if this could be made to

That's exactly what I want to do. I have a PVR-250, and I transcoded to
MPEG-4 to save space and cut commercials. Now I have a friend that
wants to see the show, and I'm trying to make a copy for him.

All I've read in the archives suggests that it could be done if someone
wrote some more code to do it, but such code doesn't exist. The problem
area is in keeping the audio sync.

Personally, I would consider it a huge win if this could be made to
work.

Nope. Freshrpms has been having issue after issue with its hosting provider.
Change all ayo.freshrpms.net occurences in your sources.list to
ayo.us.freshrpms.net and you should be fine.

is that all that needs to be done? I thought there would be options
for HOW to transcode it. From what I can tell:

Recording Profile -> Create New
I type in a name, I pick MPEG2 - PVR as the card type
it then makes me pick one of (Default, Live TV, High Quality, Low
Quality) - I'm not clear as to what this means, so I just pick Default
for now
This section has the option for "Automatically transcode"
I can pick the new size, but under "codec" it doesn't allow me to
change the type to anything but MPEG-2 Hardware Encoder
Same thing on the next page, and then it kicks me back to pick the
type of recording (Default, Live TV, High Quality, Low Quality)

Under the recording profile "transcoder", there are more options for
transcoding, it seems. Can somebody point me at the part I'm missing?
I'm sure it's something simple, probably just in how I'm reading all
this

What version of MySql are you running? If I recall
correctly, temporary tables are not supported in MySql
3.23, the version that Myth has a dependency with.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong here.

Fix? Blow off the dependencies and upgrade MySql to
4.x (on my list of things to do) or recode/grab an
earlier version of mythfilldatabase. Are you running
from CVS? I haven't hit that problem, yet...

They aren't the same. This is an older model with an older generation
tuner that doesn't do as great a job with multipath as the Air2PC you
have. Also, whereas your version may support QAM for some people on
some frequencies, the older version does *not* support QAM at all

I need another tuner with all the finale's coming, and $80 is cheaper
than a single PVR-250 or PVR-500.
Thoughts?

Yes, I saw them a couple of weeks ago. Looks they they haven't been a
hot seller.

These use an older tuner. I don't have one so can't tell you if it is
supported or not. Whether the older tuner is a big deal for you depends
on whether multi-path is an issue in your area and if you want to mess
with making sure the Linux drivers support it.

I'm seeing a similar behavior after every day after the listings have
been updated. If I start the front-end from a command line, I see error
messages because the front-end is trying to update the database schema
by adding columns that already exist. If I manually delete the columns,
the front-end starts up, and is fine until the next listings update.
I'd love some guidance on this one!

I grabed the CVS version. But when I look at the README,
it points to a link to a dead article. Looking at install.sh,
it looks like I cna just run it, and all will be well. But rather
than mess up my system, I thought I'd ask if that's correct?

Worked for me as Paul H. mentioned... Don't forget to apt-get update &&
apt-get dist-upgrade

When I did that after the apt-get install mythtv-suite it recorded removing
some older rpms.

[mythtv-users] Problems with HW Mpeg decoding on Epia board - MythTV 0.18

2005-05-17 Thread Joel Utting
Hi, I'm working at getting myth going on the Epia
M1 for a possible commercial project, I've worked
through many HOWTO's and info, but I'm having trouble
diagnosing a problem with HW Mpeg. In summary ;

MythTV 0.18 works with I don't compile in XvMC VLD
support - Xv works to watch DVB signal TV but it is
slow and choppy and cuts out regularly (reports
pre-buffering error).

When I compile in XvMC VLD I just get a black screen
when watching TV - this is the terminal window output
;

2005-05-18 09:50:07.970 AvFormatDecoder: Could not

WatchingLiveTV
2005-05-18 09:50:25.212 Changing from WatchingLiveTV
to None
2005-05-18 09:50:25.215 Changing from None to None

Mythtv can still escape to the menu and exit - but
ends with a segfault.

The driver via_v4l doesn't seem to be installed or
available on my system - is it still required with
kernel 2.6.10 ? (Some HOWTOs seem to be out of date,
and Xine reports that it is using HW decoding)

Thanks for any help,
Bye - Joel.

Note that I was deliberately recording a show (The Simpsons), stopped
the recording and was using Mythweb. Nothing odd in the logs, no
errors... Just this. Note that it got as far as "Done recording" then
died almost immediately. The restart was forced by my job that runs
every minute.

Not sure about the binary packages... It did the same thing (though
slightly more frequently) with 0.17 as well.

Thoughts anyone? It still looks like a database problem to me, the
failing seems to happen when the database is being utilized a lot (and
watching "top" I saw usage of memory of the mysqld process spike a
little higher than usual right before the crash). Could this be a mysql
bug we're fighting? Version perhaps?

you can edit /etc/init.d/mythbackend
go to the "start)" section
find the line that calls mythbackend
add " -v all "

or just run mythbackend manually in a shell

log in remotely or switch to a virtual terminal locally with
(you can go back with usually)

comment out the cron job for now
this way, if the backend dies, you can switch to that vt to see tha last
log messages printed

just type
"mythbackend -v all"

or loop it with
"while : ; do mythbackend -v all ; sleep 5 ; done"

> Another time the backend dies is if I've been using Mythweb, that

does mythweb make the backend die for you only on the recorded_programs
screen or on other screens as well?

> Currently I'd say I lose backend about twice per day on average at the

> moment. Version 0.18.0 (not had time to do 0.18.1, but doesn't seem

try current cvs with debugging turned on and send a backtrace to the
mythtv-dev list

every now and then this seems to be happen to someone, but since none of
the devs can seem to reproduce it, it's hard to fix.

best to follow these instructions
http://mythtv.org/docs/mythtv-HOWTO-21.html#ss21.2

who knows, the crashes could be caused by your binary packages
themselves so, does it still happen with CVS with debugging turned on?

also,
look up the "ulimit" command
you can set it so that core files are written to disk when a program
crashes "ulimit -c unlimited"

that way you can run "mythbackend -v all" and do a "gdb mythbackend
core"
or similar when it dies to make a backtrace even though you weren't
using gdb to run mythbackend

I'm also having the same trouble with one of my channels. I record in
"TS" format, and have to change the audio track every time I change to
that particular channel. (All other channels work fine)

[mythtv-users] Re: Mythfrontend dies looking for fd0 with mediamonitor??

2005-05-17 Thread mudbiker
Well, I got it to work, albeit with a 5 pound sledge. I discovered by
deleting /dev/fd0 mythfrontend would go ahead and start. However, on
reboot, /dev/fd0 reappears. So, I added "rm /dev/fd0" to my startup
script. It's not pretty, but its working. I am very surprised nobody
else seems to have run into this!

Re: [mythtv-users] multiple audio tracks on digital TV

2005-05-17 Thread Dean Wilson
Has anyone else had this problem? I ask because I have a similar issue --

I just upgraded to 18.1 (from 17) and noticed that when I enabled TS
recording, mythtv found multiple audio channels -- but picks the
higher one, (2 -- which is apparently silent) instead of channel 1,
which works.

Has anyone found a fix?

Re: [mythtv-users] Re: Bug in mythtv-suite?

2005-05-17 Thread Paul Hamm
Graeme Wilford's fix works but do it like this

Edit this file: /etc/apt/sources.list

and add the next 2 lines

# temporary mythtv-suite fix
rpm http://axentra.net files/mezzanine/mythtv stable

Then run these 2 commands

apt-get update
apt-get install mythtv-suite=0.18

There is no need to download the rpm. Worked fine for me.

If it's the same one as this one:

http://www.cyberestore.com/product_info.php?cPath=34&products_id=103

then I got it working in my Myth setup. Some people have had problems
with the QAM tuning, but I fortunately haven't.

[mythtv-users] Keybindings

2005-05-17 Thread Joe Henley
Hi,
I'm running MythTV version 18 from atrms.net. It's version 109 for
Fedora Core 3.

I cannot find a way to get changes to the keybindings to "stick." I'm
trying to adjust several of them, plus a couple of "jump points" using
MythWeb. But no luck.

I've tried to open up the MySQL security to "%"@"%", adjusted every
permission I can find, etc. but nothing seems to work.

Anyone got any good ideas/suggestions?

[mythtv-users] $80 Air2PC cards (Rev 0.2?)

2005-05-17 Thread Blammo
Anyone seen (and bought) one of these?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=3761&item=5195966400&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW

I'm curious if anyone has one working in a myth box? I'm a little wary
given the verbage about "updated tuners"...

I need another tuner with all the finale's coming, and $80 is cheaper
than a single PVR-250 or PVR-500.

Thoughts?

QUOTE:
This Air2PC-ATSC-PCI card, one the first ever created for PC-based
reception of off-air ATSC signals, was designed by B2C2, and was
manufactured in 2001. While this card was subsequently replaced by
newer versions with updated tuners the basic functionality has never
changed. Recently, we obtained a limited quantity of these receivers
that were never used and are still in there original shipping boxes.
As such we are selling these receiver cards at a deeply discounted
price. The list price of the newer version of the card is $169.95. The
primary difference between this card and the newer version is related
to tuner sensitivity and multipath handling however it is our
experience in the vast majority of locations this has proven not to be
a significant issue. A directional UHF Antenna (not included) is
required to receive the signal.

Getting the data isn't the hard part. It's available on the 1394
cable. What's hard is getting the info out of the data.

5C is basically a public/private key exchange every 30 seconds with a
proprietary encryption algorithm that (at the time) you had to sign an
NDA to get ahold of. We did not sign it as we didn't need to go that
far for the work we were doing. Most folks were going to buy chips
from one of the five C's so they didn't actually need to know how it
was being encoded. Data is encrypted based on the most recently
exchanged key.

While breaking the encryption algorithm is not unheard of, I think
that breaking the current public/private key in under 30 seconds and
getting the data in real time sounded pretty much impossible to me at
the time. It would be more likely that you might find some piece of
equipment that you could modify and dig the data out of but the 5 C's
and Hollywood were being very careful about where the data could be in
a digital format and in an unencrypted state.

Basically correct (with 'blessed' meaning that the device does some
preliminary transactions to show it's compliant with the spec) but
even once the data is sent from the DVD or cable box to the TV/monitor
it's still encrypted as per the above.

[mythtv-users] Feature request: backwards compatability

2005-05-17 Thread Bryan Halter
A nice feature to have would be backwards compatability for the Mythtv
protocol on either the backend or frontend. One of the biggest hurdles
for me as a Gentoo user is that I have to upgrade all my frontends and
backends at the same time and restart. If the frontend had barkwards
compatability by 1 version a user could upgrade the frontends one by one
as time permits and at the end upgrade the backend, likewise if the
backend could support clients one revision back that could be upgraded
without needing to upgrade all the frontends.

I don't know how much effort is involved in this or if it has been
discussed previously, just an observation.

Look harder. :-)

The short version is: for the stuff you want to transcode, set up a recording
profile that is set to auto-transcode, then set up that recording to use the
profile you just set up.

[mythtv-users] auto transcoding *some* recordings

2005-05-17 Thread Jeff Simpson
Is it possible to set up some recordings (from a PVR-350) to
automatically re-transcode, but have that setting not affect the other
recordings? Some shows I like to record and transcode so it's easy to
put them on a laptop or download them from myself, but others I like
to keep full quality and save to dvd.

Any idea how to do this? I'm looking through the setup and haven't
found anything, yet.

This is interesting...

The author seems to think that if you have cable TV service, the cable
company must provide you with any local HDTV stations without charge
over QAM. Can anyone back this up?

I had to make a startup script that runs before
mythbackend so that my tuners would be loaded before
mythbackend. Pretty simple, create a file called
/etc/rc3.d/S85tuners, parte these lines into the file

#!/bin/bash
# Source function library.
. /etc/rc.d/init.d/functions

start() {
/sbin/modprobe cx88-dvb
/sbin/modprobe ivtv
/usr/bin/ivtvctl -d /dev/video1 -p 6
}
stop() {
/sbin/modprobe -r cx88-dvb
/sbin/modprobe -r ivtv

case "$1" in

start

  stop)
stop

echo $"Usage: $prog {start|stop}"
exit 1

exit $RETVAL

Make sure you comment out the dvb lines if you don't
have a dvb card. Also make sure you chmod 755
/etc/rc3.d/S85tuners

Not that I would do this, nor recommend that others try :)

But how severe are the technical (not the legal) barriers to putting a
bus sniffer between the cable box and a blessed device, and observing
how the blessed device replies to the cable box's initial inquiries?

It's possible that the behavior of the cable box goes as follows:
notice that a device has been attached, make an initial query to see
if the attached device is blessed, if attached device is not blessed
then terminate connection, else if attached device is convinces the
cable box that it's blessed then send data to it.

Of course it's also possible that the cable box periodically queries
the attached device &/or actually encrypts the data.

Just some thoughts...

Re: [mythtv-users] adding feeds to MythNews

Replace your ampersands with & in the environmentalhealthnews.org

That should fix your parsing problem. For more info on proper XML

I think I found it. I started running the statement one part at a time,
dropping the table, and then adding a new part.

mysql> CREATE TEMPORARY TABLE IF NOT EXISTS dd_schedule ( programid
char(12), stationid char(12), scheduletime datetime, duration time, repeat
bool);
ERROR 1064 (42000): You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual
that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use
near 'repeat bool)' at line 1
mysql> CREATE TEMPORARY TABLE IF NOT EXISTS dd_schedule ( programid
char(12), stationid char(12), scheduletime datetime, duration time, repeata
bool);
Query OK, 0 rows affected (0.00 sec)

"repeat" appears to be a reserved
word.

So, does anyone have any clues on how I might fix this?

Don't worry about it. I've been using MySQL from the time it went OS,
(in fact, I was the first mirror they had), and I still sometimes
get in a rush and forget to do that. Now, whenever something doesn't
work right, the first thing I do is flush everything. :)

Well, I think they are violating the FCC regs by saying this. However,
seems that you should be able to just tell them you have one of the
TVs with a DTVLink (new name for 1394 in TVs) port. My Mitsubishi
52725 has such ports, I know that Toshiba and some RCA TVs have them.
Or perhaps one of the digital VCRs that have the ports. I don't see
a moral issue in lying to them if they are going to break the regs.

However, at least for now the hard truth is that the ability to get
your HD -- or even your non-OTA SD -- over 1394 is likely to be a
temporary situation, something flying under the radar until they notice
it. I can understand why they are leaving the 5C off at first.
DRM systems can cause a great deal of user trouble and incompatibility
even for people who have the blessed equipment.

But once a lot of people start using this, particularly if they find
a lot of torrents sourced from people who got 1394 output of programs,
then weenies at the studios will start calling the cable companies and
forcing them to turn on the copy prevention and 5C stuff.

However, it's certainly great to have until that happens. For now,
tuner cards are legal again, but there's no clear path to the abliity
of a Mythbox to record non-OTA HD shows in a way that will remain
stable. We're not too far away from people making cheap 720p capture
equipment, in fact I think it could be done if people saw the market
for it (which they will as consumers start demanding 720p camcorders,
which won't need the A2D but will need the compressing chips).

Unfortunately, it will always be a kludge to convert digital to
analog and then re-capture and re-compress/transcode it. You will
spend a lot to get (probably) larger recordings that are not as good.

Digital capture (DVI) would technically make it possible, if you compressed
with exactly the same algorithms and parameters as the original source,
to get approximately the same file out as came in, just with a lot of
work.

[mythtv-users] adding feeds to MythNews

2005-05-17 Thread myth joe
How do I add news feeds? Searching the list I see that I should edit

see attached. I added a bunch of feeds at the top of the file.

I see also that there was a problem w/ Knoppmyth. However, I'm
running 0.18 installed from ATrpms.

Is there a simple bug in my news-sites.xml file or have I done (failed
to do) something else?

In any case, you may want to look at my file to see if any of my feeds
interest you.

This is causing it's own problems since either Myth or Qt-MySQL is using

My apologies if you're making a funny, but even if you are, for those that

If you're still wondering if a Pundit-R will take a Celeron-D: mine's
running on a Celeron D 330.

I don't know about the WinTV PVR 150, but I've got a WinTV PVR 350 and
a WinTV Go in the Pundit-R. It will take you some time, lots of
perseverance and it will bring loads of frustration, but it fits :-)

 Strange.

Remains to be seen if you just have a slightly off kilter disc, or if there's
something more fundamental going on.

Anyone else own a copy of this DVD? If no one pipes up in a day or two, I'll
go buy one and figure out if I can reproduce the problem.

Re: [mythtv-users] Dying Backend

2005-05-17 Thread James Armstrong
Another time the backend dies is if I've been using Mythweb, that seems to
cause more crashes than it's sometimes worth (though I do prefer using
Mythweb to locate shows that I want to record).

does mythweb make the backend die for you
only on the recorded_programs screen or on other screens as well?

Currently I'd say I lose backend about twice per day on average at the
moment. Version 0.18.0 (not had time to do 0.18.1, but doesn't seem like it
fixes any backend or commflag bugs).

try current cvs with debugging turned on
and send a backtrace to the mythtv-dev list
I have been having this problem for some time now. I usually am about a
week behind the cvs and still happens. I don't really have a problem
with my frontend, just mythweb. It happens randomly when I delete a
recording and also when I reschedule one. The last line in my log is
always a Reschedule: -1 like it returned an error. I did a backtrace on
the dev list. I don't know how to read them well, but it looks like it
is a qt_lock function that is segfaulting.

you can edit /etc/init.d/mythbackend
go to the "start)" section
find the line that calls mythbackend
add " -v all "

or just run mythbackend manually in a shell

log in remotely or switch to a virtual terminal locally with
(you can go back with usually)

comment out the cron job for now
this way, if the backend dies, you can switch to that vt to see tha last log
messages printed

just type
"mythbackend -v all"

or loop it with
"while : ; do mythbackend -v all ; sleep 5 ; done"

try current cvs with debugging turned on
and send a backtrace to the mythtv-dev list

every now and then this seems to be happen to someone,
but since none of the devs can seem to reproduce it,
it's hard to fix.

best to follow these instructions
http://mythtv.org/docs/mythtv-HOWTO-21.html#ss21.2

who knows, the crashes could be caused by your binary packages themselves
so, does it still happen with CVS with debugging turned on?

also,
look up the "ulimit" command
you can set it so that core files are written to disk when a program crashes
"ulimit -c unlimited"

that way you can run "mythbackend -v all" and do a
"gdb mythbackend core"
or similar when it dies to make a backtrace even though you weren't using gdb
to run mythbackend

Re: [mythtv-users] Re: Dying Backend

2005-05-17 Thread Larry Taub
I could buy that the db writes are the problem. Since my first email, I have had two more crashes in the backend.

The first occurred right when it was scheduled to record a show a few hours ago. I was watching another already recorded, flagged, and transcoded show at the time so I assume the playback had no interaction with the db after it began. Then, the frontend informed me there was no connection to the backend when the playback finished. I reviewed the logs and again there was no further info. It appeared to start recording the show then the log ceases, leading me to believe it died immediately at that point.

The second occurred shortly after. I restarted the backend after reviewing the logs and later went into mythweb. I viewed the machine status and saw that it had picked up in the middle of a recording and thus had an incomplete show. I went to recorded programs and selected to delete the file. It deleted the file supposedly but crashed the backend. Luckily, this was repeatable. I did this again right now to test it and received the unable to connect to backend error messages from mythweb.

Larry
On 5/17/05, Gavin Haslett <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:

I say that it's during database writing because if I'm just READING the database it almost never seems to die. Basically I see it when scheduling recordings (mythweb most common, but on occasion through Mythfrontend), deleting recordings (removed record from the database, again most often in Mythweb but still happens in MFD), after running mythfilldatabase (often dies a minute or so after MFD runs), and when recording finishes and commflag is about to start. I should clarify that last one; I run that AFTER recording, not during recording as I'm unsure how happy my AMD 800 would be with that.
I have noticed that if I just WATCH recordings (a task that doesn't write to the database at all) then it doesn't crash... but what would be the point of that?I think part of the backend problems might be database-related. I've had occasional problems with MySQL with my own developed applications where it doesn't seem to commit the writes back to the database files correctly, or takes a lot longer than I expect for it to write. It doesn't seem consistent... I just trap for the error and verify writes now. Sure it slows my code, but it prevents my code from segfaulting after a failed write.

crashed on an evening recording. When I woke up this morning, I saw that itrecorded two late night shows fine and was still running but then it crashedon a morning show today. I took the opportunity to upgrade to .18.1 and have
