[mythtv-users] Stuttering/A'V out of synch, but only after fast forward.
Hi Like a lot of other people I have the prebuffer pauses during playback of my recordings on my frontend. The stuttering happens every 3-5 seconds. So I have printouts like these: . 2005-07-02 23:06:25.654 A/V diverged by -3.39277 frames, dropping frame to keep audio in sync 2005-07-02 23:06:25.654 A/V diverged by -3.0241 frames, dropping frame to keep audio in sync 2005-07-02 23:06:25.793 prebuffering pause 2005-07-02 23:06:25.794 waiting for prebuffer... 2005-07-02 23:06:25.928 prebuffer wait timed out.. . . The funny thing is that the stuttering only starts AFTER I rewind or fast forward. I start playing a recording without touching the remote, and it plays fine. But as soon as I hit fast forward and the recording starts playing again the stuttering starts. On additional strange thing is that if, while the stuttering is going on, I use Alt-TAB to change to a terminal to check for example what 'top' prints out and then switch back, the stuttering dissapears?!? Really odd, and not a good workaround. I've read a bunch of posts in the email list and I have pretty much tried every on/off combination of settings that people have suggested: extra audio buffer, interlace, libmpeg2, enable realtime, video as timebase, enable openGL as vertical, hardware XvMC decode, seek to exact frame, etc, etc. Running mythfrontend as root changes nothing. CPU usage during playback is less than 50%. I also took my bitrate down from like 5000 to 2800, no help. Played with audio quality to see if that helped, no dice. I have an Asus Pundit-R with a Celeron 2.4 Ghz. I have an external SOundblaster USB live card(I've also tried with the onboard one, same issue) , and I even put in a Nvidia MX4 PCI card since the onboard ATI video card is for shit( or rather, the driver is). I have a 100Mbits connection between my Pundit frontent and the mythtv server, so it isn't the network. I run Fedora Core 3, all latest updates. kernel 2.6.11-1.27_FC3. Playback on the backend server is fine, no stuttering. Does anyone have any ideas what I can try next? thanks, Henrik Bentel ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users

[mythtv-users] Forward fails in recorded shows
Latest myth of corse, running FC3, ABIT NF7-S I have noticed that in a large number of recordings MythTv fails to forward correctly. What happens is that you: 1) press forward and find yourself somewhere far forward (>5 min) and backwards will not pass this position now 2) you press forward. Picture freezes for a while and then the show is aborted. You can 3X your way across, but not forward. Anybody else noticed that? [mythtv-users] Cutpoints delayed & bad commercial flagging
I usually put cutpoints into a movie before I watch it so I can just let it run (I don't transcode). The problem is that it always plays about 10 seconds after the "delete after this point" cutpoints. The "delete before this point" cutpoints don't appear to have the problem (certainly not to the same degree - I havn't noticed it). I have also tried a transcode which also results in the delay. Is this a software limitation or is something not working right? I also have another issue which may be related. Commercial flagging nearly always detects commercials as starting and ending too early (averaging 20-30 seconds). I don't think I've ever seen a commercial break flagged correctly. Is this normal? I am using the "all" method of flagging. The TV source is a DVB card and is hence in mpeg-2. I am in Australia and using MythTV 0.18.1. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Re: [mythtv-users] Recording the wrong program on the wrong encoder?
Piers Kittel wrote: Thing is that encoder 1 is set up properly and working fine, and encoder 2 is experimental, I don't mind if I lose all the rubbish I record on that, but the good things I use encoder 1. Anyway, no it wasn't a typo. I told it to use channel 1004, but recorded channel 3 (i.e. ITV), even tho the "recording schedules" said channel 4 (i.e. encoder 1 channel 4) OK. This sounds like a problem with your external channel change (script/transmitter or serial link/STB). If Myth said it's going to record on channel 4, but recorded 3, it wasn't Myth's doing. The difference is not the channel--it's the recording rule. Because it's a record once, it records that particular showing. If it were a find once (or record always, etc.), it might record from the other encoder. Actually, no. I only tried the "Find" rule to see if it solved the problem, but it didn't. Here you go... T4:Hollyoaks 1004 - Channel 4 Default Default Once 1 T4:Hollyoaks 4 - Channel 4 Sun Jul 3, 2005 (10:20 AM) 2 hrs 35 mins Don't Record Never Record Even with an "Once" recording rule, it still will record from Channel 4 not Channel 1004. OK. Then this means that--regardless of recording type--when Myth identifies that two channels are the same, it will *always* use the preferred encoder. The more I think about it, the more that seems the sensible way to program it. Setting up the different channels is not accomplishing anything. I recommend deleting the 10XX channels and reassigning the input on encoder 2 to the same as encoder 1. Ok. How exactly can I do this? Encoder 2 is easy as it's an DVB card, but Encoder 1 is an PVR card recording from an external digtial STB... OK, if they really are different sources, then leave it that way. (I thought you only created a different source to allow yourself to specify which encoder to use.) The only time encoder 2 will be used is when encoder 1 is already in use. By default, encoder 1 is used (basically, encoders are chosen by priority, but in the event of a tie, the lowest-numbered encoder is used). You can set encoder priorities using mythtv-setup and you can tell it to use the least-preferred encoder for LiveTV (something about minimize encoder conflicts with LiveTV), but otherwise, Myth will choose the lowest-numbered available encoder for all recordings. Re: [mythtv-users] Known good surround sound cards?
It's a Chaintech SKT600's onboard sound. Another poster said that he's seen onboard audio that uses the other stereo ports to support surround sound. I had thought that the "external codec" was probably dependant on Windows drivers. I downloaded the manual and it says "With external high quality 5.1-channel AC97 Codec", "Complete software driver supports for Windows® OS" and "Optional S/PDIF out function". And that's ALL it says about it. Either way, I've never liked onboard sound. I've always noticed noise from the bus (clicks or static when video, com ports, or hard drives are being used). Someone else suggested the TurtleBeach Riviera, and I think I'm going to go with one of those. Sorry, I missed the original post, so you may have already given some of this info. What kind of board is it? If it doesn't have spdif output on the board, is there a header for it that you could buy a bracket for? Some soundcards do this, put the spdif on a header and sell a connector, and it would seem odd that they say they support "external codec" and don't really have a way to support it. -Michael ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users

The hacked DirecTv HD receiver (http://www.169time.com) is NOT supported by Myth. It does not use a standard protocol but would require a Myth dev to customize the "recording" process to talk to it. No such customization has been done to date, to my knowledge. > HD support in mythtv for anything other than OTA is sorely lacking > and > limited. Even ota broadcast signals cannot all be captured as most > good > content is encripted. Nope. Broadcast content ("OTA" -- over the AIR) is NOT encrypted. There are provisions to encrypt broadcast over CABLE. The Broadcast Flag is a bit that, when set, is supposed to tell downstream devices to not allow the content to be saved in the open. My personal opinion: Use Myth to snag recordings over the air. If satellite/cable people don't want us to have their signals, oblige them by not signing up. I think you may be a bit confused about your components. All of the x50 cards (and the 500) are hardware encoding. The difference is that the 350 does hardware decoding, which is completely irrelevant if your sending the signal out through DVI. Support is best for the 250/350, which have the same capture circuitry. Sure. The option is there ("Import DVD" from the "Optical Disc" menu), but it does nothing when selected. Also, in the Media Settings - DVD Settings, there is no longer the option to tweak your DVD Rip settings (DVD Ripping?). Check out Media Settings - Music Settings to see what I mean. There is an option to tweak your audio rips. Hope that helps. [mythtv-users] Hauppauge pvr-350 or pvr-500
Hi, After several months away(the box I was configuring was stolen). I'm back and planning its replacement. The box will be a SFF Biostar iDEQ 330P with one of the newer/cooler generation AMD 64 processors (probably a "San Diego" unless anyone knows a good reason to go with a 512 KB cache variant). Last time I was around Jarrod was having some success with IVTV and the PVR-500. So the first questio is how this is progressing: Is the PVR-500 now a viable alternative in Linux? The next questions have to do with the benefits/disadvantages of the 500 against the 350 (with hardware decoding). Obviously it's nice to have two tuners. Is the picture quality of the 500 noticably worse than the 350? I will be using the HTPC into a flat LCD screen with DVI in. If I use DVI then the hardware decoder of the 350 is irrelevant, but what is the heat/noise tradeoff for software decoding likely to be using the AMD processor? Any quick help on this would really be appreciated. Also wondering about the best screencard to use. It has to be a PCI-E card, which I think limits me to ATI and Nvidia, and, at first glance the ATI's with passive cooling seem beefier than the Nvidia ones (where all but the lowest spec cards have nasty, whiny fans). I had an ATI card before that I was pleased with, but have read that picture quality is better with Nvidia. Any suggestions? As always, this is my personal opinion and will probably get me flamed by the list. I have been using myth for about 2 years now to record sd content from dishnet and I have been looking into swithing to hd now that the amount of content is increasing. Currently your only options for capturing hd from sat are to buy a hd dvr from directv/dishnet or to spend the money to have one of the few supported boxes hacked to add firewire support. The hack info was posted to the list a couple of months ago so you should still be able to find it in the archives. HD support in mythtv for anything other than OTA is sorely lacking and limited. Even ota broadcast signals cannot all be captured as most good content is encripted. At this point in time the directv/dishnet dvr is probably your best choice. Here at my location the local cable company is offering a FREE hd dvr from scientific atlantic for the same rental as a standard set top box. I would have jumped at this months ago except that all the reviews of that box say it sucks the big one. It lacks the 30 second commercial skip feature and only allows you for fast forward (while watching) thru commercials. At some point this will probably replace my myth system as they are reportedly working on this feature for release later this year. PS - All the commercial dvrs have the ability to link boxes via ethernet so there is the possibility of being able to download content to a pc pretending to be a dvr. Search the web for more info on this feature. Good luck with this as this seems to be the new holy grail for software dvr systems. ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users
[mythtv-users] What bitrates do you use?
I experimented with bitrates in recording profiles to see what bitrates give acceptable quality. The results were rather surprising: 1) For PVR350 recording profile, I have to specify bitrates over 1 before I stop seeing differences in quality. This gives me 4GB/hour files. 2) For transcoding to MPEG4 I tried different bitrates including 6000 and 8000. At 8000 I don't see any quality loss, but transcoded file is almost as large as original file. For 6000 I clearly see motion trails. These bitrates are much higher than whatI normally use, say, with mencoder, and with no quality loss. When I get to where I want to be, I press play. Instead of being where I intended, I'm way the hell somewhere random in the program. To make ffwd/rrwd work, I can't use the play button. Because it's a record once, it records that particular showing. If it were a find once (or record always, etc.), it might record from the other encoder. Actually, no. I only tried the "Find" rule to see if it solved the problem, but it didn't. Here you go... T4:Hollyoaks1004 - Channel 4Default Default Once 1 T4:Hollyoaks 4 - Channel 4 Sun Jul 3, 2005 (10:20 AM) 2 hrs 35 mins Don't Record Never Record Even with an "Once" recording rule, it still will record from Channel 4 not Channel 1004. Aren't you getting it when it records on channel 4 (or was the 3 above not a typo)? Like I said, no, wasn't a typo. Thanks very much for your help though Cheers - Piers ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users

[mythtv-users] a few fuzzy channels
Almost there!! I've got a WinTV-PVR350, using kernel 2.6.9 vanilla, Myth 0.18-1, ivtv-0.2.0-rc3j. Everything is up and running on my dual screen setup. Yay! Here's the problem. . . I've got a couple of fuzzy channels (ch 69 and 70). Unfortunately those are channels I like and may want to record stuff on. My cable is split coming into the house, I've got a signal booster, and then another split, out to TV and WinTV card (same type of cable). When I watch those channels on regular TV the picture is clear, but when I watch them through myth, they're fuzzy. I've tried using us-cable and us-cable-hrc(I think that's what it's called), no love. I did a bit of google searching and saw that it may be caused by noise coming from other pci cards (sound) or my video card (NVidia GeForce FX5200 AGP). I've now removed my sound card (don't need it) and placed the WinTV card as far as possible away from my video card. The gods of google also mentioned that it may be a frequency issue within Myth, but I have absolutely no idea how to change those by hand. Has anyone else had this type of problem, or know how to fix it? ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users

Re: [mythtv-users] Recording the wrong program on the wrong encoder?
Piers Kittel wrote: I've got 2 TV tuners on my MythTV box - they both can receive exactly the same programs, but I've created 2 sets of channels each - i.e. encoder 1 has channel 1: BBC1, channel 2: BBC2 and so on. And encoder 2 has channel 1001: BBC1, channel 1002: BBC2 and so on. It all works fine, I can choose which TV tuner to use for different programs, MythTV always record the correct channel from the correct TV tuner. Anyway, there's a certain rubbish soap shown on Sundays on Channel 4 that I want to watch, and I prefer the 2nd TV tuner, so I set MythTV to record Hollyoaks Omnibus from channel 1004 at that specific time. But for the last 3 weeks, MythTV has been recording ITV from the 1st encoder (i.e. channel 3)! Channel 3? Typo? I checked the recording schedules, it clearly shows "Channel 1004" but the "Scheduled recordings" list, it shows it will record Hollyoaks from channel 4?! And no, there is no clash, there is nothing else scheduled to be recorded on the whole day. Using MythWeb, I click on "Recording Schedules" and it shows: T4:Hollyoaks 1004 - Channel 4 Default Default Find One Weekly Then click on "Scheduled Recordings" 1 T4:Hollyoaks 4 - Channel 4 Sun Jul 3, 2005 (10:20 AM) 2 hrs 35 mins Don't Record Never Record Note, it says 4, and on encoder 1 - should be 1004, on encoder 2! Hmm, playing around with it, it seems that all other programs on Channel 4 has the same problem. "Recording Schedules" shows: Channel 4 Racing from Sandown Park and Haydock Park 1004 - Channel 4 Default Default Once "Scheduled Recordings" shows: 1 Channel 4 Racing from Sandown Park and Haydock Park 4 - Channel 4 Sat Jul 2, 2005 (02:00 PM) 2 hrs Don't Record Never Record Myth is smart enough to identify when channels on different input sources are the same channel, so it knows that 4 and 1004 are the same. That maximizes it ability to get all the shows you want. Other channels works just fine: "Recording Schedules" shows: Wimbledon 2005 1001 - BBC ONE Default Default Once "Scheduled Recordings" shows: 2 Wimbledon 2005 1001 - BBC ONE Sat Jul 2, 2005 (01:30 PM) 2 hrs 30 mins Don't Record Never Record See, the channel numbers matches up fine, and encoder 2 is selected. The difference is not the channel--it's the recording rule. Because it's a record once, it records that particular showing. If it were a find once (or record always, etc.), it might record from the other encoder. Any ideas anyone? I'm starting to miss my weekly Hollyoaks fix! Aren't you getting it when it records on channel 4 (or was the 3 above not a typo)? Setting up the different channels is not accomplishing anything. I recommend deleting the 10XX channels and reassigning the input on encoder 2 to the same as encoder 1. If you want to prefer a specific encoder, you should do that with encoder priorities. If it's only this show that you want on that encoder, it gets much harder. I don't think there's any functionality to allow specifying the encoder for a particular recording. If you can make a good argument why it's necessary (instead of picking the "best" available encoder--where best is defined by encoder priorities), you might be able to convince someone to send in a patch. I've been unmerging the stable version, deleting every file which has myth in its name (find / -iname "*myth*") and then did a ./configure prefix=/usr , qmake mythtv.pro, make, make install During make install I saw errors passing by, but they seemed to be ignored. -- cp -f "dialogbox.h" "/usr/include/mythtv/" strip "/usr/include/mythtv/dialogbox.h" strip: /usr/include/mythtv/dialogbox.h: File format not recognized make[2]: [install_inc] Error 1 (ignored) cp -f "lcddevice.h" "/usr/include/mythtv/" strip "/usr/include/mythtv/lcddevice.h" strip: /usr/include/mythtv/lcddevice.h: File format not recognized make[2]: [install_inc] Error 1 (ignored) cp -f "themedmenu.h" "/usr/include/mythtv/" strip "/usr/include/mythtv/themedmenu.h" strip: /usr/include/mythtv/themedmenu.h: File format not recognized make[2]: [install_inc] Error 1 (ignored) cp -f "mythcontext.h" "/usr/include/mythtv/" strip "/usr/include/mythtv/mythcontext.h" strip: /usr/include/mythtv/mythcontext.h: File format not recognized make[2]: [install_inc] Error 1 (ignored) cp -f "mythdbcon.h" "/usr/include/mythtv/" strip "/usr/include/mythtv/mythdbcon.h" strip: /usr/include/mythtv/mythdbcon.h: File format not recognized make[2]: [install_inc] Error 1 (ignored) cp -f "mythwidgets.h" "/usr/include/mythtv/" strip "/usr/include/mythtv/mythwidgets.h" strip: /usr/include/mythtv/mythwidgets.h: File format not recognized make[2]: [install_inc] Error 1 (ignored) cp -f "remotefile.h" "/usr/include/mythtv/" strip "/usr/include/mythtv/remotefile.h" strip: /usr/include/mythtv/remotefile.h: File format not recognized make[2]: [install_inc] Error 1 (ignored) cp -f "util.h" "/usr/include/mythtv/" strip "/usr/include/mythtv/util.h" strip: /usr/include/mythtv/util.h: File format not recognized make[2]: [install_inc] Error 1 (ignored) cp -f "oldsettings.h" "/usr/include/mythtv/" strip "/usr/include/mythtv/oldsettings.h" strip: /usr/include/mythtv/oldsettings.h: File format not recognized make[2]: [install_inc] Error 1 (ignored) cp -f "volumecontrol.h" "/usr/include/mythtv/" strip "/usr/include/mythtv/volumecontrol.h" strip: /usr/include/mythtv/volumecontrol.h: File format not recognized make[2]: [install_inc] Error 1 (ignored) cp -f "settings.h" "/usr/include/mythtv/" strip "/usr/include/mythtv/settings.h" strip: /usr/include/mythtv/settings.h: File format not recognized make[1]: Entering directory `/root/mythsvn/mythtv/setup' cp -f "mythtv-setup" "/usr/bin/mythtv-setup" strip "/usr/bin/mythtv-setup" cp -f "setup.xml" "/usr/share/mythtv/" strip "/usr/share/mythtv/setup.xml" strip: /usr/share/mythtv/setup.xml: File format not recognized make[1]: [install_menu] Error 1 (ignored) make[1]: Leaving directory `/root/mythsvn/mythtv/setup' --- --- laptop1 mythtv # ./configure --prefix=/usr # Basic Settings Compile type release Compiler cache no DistCC no Install prefix /usr CPU x86 (Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.00GHz) Big Endian no MMX enabled yes Vector Builtins no # Input Support Joystick menuyes lirc support no Video4Linux sup. yes ivtv support yes FireWire support no DVB support no [/usr/src/linux-2.6.11-gentoo-r11/include] # Sound Output Support OSS support yes ALSA support yes aRts support yes JACK support yes # Video Output Support x11 support yes xrandr support yes xv support yes XvMC support no XvMC VLD support no XvMC pro s
[mythtv-users] Recording the wrong program on the wrong encoder?
Hello all, I've got 2 TV tuners on my MythTV box - they both can receive exactly the same programs, but I've created 2 sets of channels each - i.e. encoder 1 has channel 1: BBC1, channel 2: BBC2 and so on. But for the last 3 weeks, MythTV has been recording ITV from the 1st encoder (i.e. channel 3)! I checked the recording schedules, it clearly shows "Channel 1004" but the "Scheduled recordings" list, it shows it will record Hollyoaks from channel 4?! And no, there is no clash, there is nothing else scheduled to be recorded on the whole day. Using MythWeb, I click on "Recording Schedules" and it shows: T4:Hollyoaks1004 - Channel 4Default Default Find One Weekly Then click on "Scheduled Recordings" 1 T4:Hollyoaks 4 - Channel 4 Sun Jul 3, 2005 (10:20 AM) 2 hrs 35 mins Don't Record Never Record Note, it says 4, and on encoder 1 - should be 1004, on encoder 2! Hmm, playing around with it, it seems that all other programs on Channel 4 has the same problem. "Recording Schedules" shows: Channel 4 Racing from Sandown Park and Haydock Park 1004 - Channel 4 Default Default Once "Scheduled Recordings" shows: 1 Channel 4 Racing from Sandown Park and Haydock Park 4 - Channel 4 Sat Jul 2, 2005 (02:00 PM) 2 hrs Don't Record Never Record Other channels works just fine: "Recording Schedules" shows: Wimbledon 2005 1001 - BBC ONE Default Default Once "Scheduled Recordings" shows: 2 Wimbledon 2005 1001 - BBC ONE Sat Jul 2, 2005 (01:30 PM) 2 hrs 30 mins Don't Record Never Record See, the channel numbers matches up fine, and encoder 2 is selected. Any ideas anyone? I'm starting to miss my weekly Hollyoaks fix! Thanks ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users

So my question (Which I am currently researching as I type). What are people with EPIA m1 doing for remotesI ended up using the remote that came with the VisionPlus DVB card. It's base station makes it look like a USB keyboard so, rather than setting up LIRC, the thing is to remap application keys to match the remote. Myth, mplayer and xine all let you do that, so it's worked quite well. It sounds icky, and I was planning on putting in a "better" solution, but this has worked surprisingly well, so I'll likely not bother.Matt.___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users

There should not be any problems as the patch (the latest one, which I just uploaded) is made against the latest revision. > It seems that it is recording a Teletext stream. At least the guy who did the Xine subtitle support needed some sample subtitle streams from me because he couldn't get access to them in Aus. Are you using TS or PS? My code does not touch the back end side at all. In case you use TS, it should record all the subtitle streams AFAIK, and my code should only pick the subtitle ones. If you could be able to provide a sample of stream that does not work, I could check it out. -- --PJ ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users

[mythtv-users] MythTV on XDSL on XBox
Hi, Has anybody successfully installed mythtv on XDSL running on an XBox? (See http://www.xbox-linux.org/XDSL_HOWTO) I think its essentially just a cut down version of Xebian. I've managed to install XDSL on a loopback file on my (softmodded) XBox. It's a Debian based distro, so will I be able to use the normal Xbox scripts? I'm going to try anyway, I was just wondering if anybody had any tips? Thanks, Jonny ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users
