Re: [mythtv-users] Trouble Playing Ripped DVDs

2005-07-26 Thread Michael Privett
When you say movie setup page, are you referring to
the Default Player field arrived at by traversing
through Videos Settings-Player Settings? I can
change this to ogle (or xine), but the result is still
the same for me.

I'm going thru the following menu sequence to try and
play the movie:
Media Library-Watch Videos

Now I see my movies (I have it in list view). I was
expecting I could highlight my movie and then hit
enter to fire up the player (be it ogle, xine,
mplayer, etc), but nothing happens. I have to then
traverse the VIDEO_TS dir and can only get the player
to start if I select a specific VOB. This doesn't
make a lot of sense to me.

Is there another myth module I should be using for
this?

Thanks,
Michael

OK yes of course I see what you mean.

A DVD consists of a number of directories and files. If you rip it
intact (as the directories and files) you get a tree structure same as
on the original DVD.

The problem here is that mythvideo flattens all the directories inside
its base directory, so it looks like you have a whole swag of VOB and
BUF etc files. It is a bit annoying.

However a recent thread alerted me to the fact that you can make an iso
of the DVD and then use xine to play the iso. This would mean you are
dealing with one file only.

Thats what i recommend doing.

Yes, it is better because the information is (or was at one time
anyway) more comprehensive on the NineMSN one. It also had some more
friendly config options in the perl script itself. Best place to
download it from is the gossamer archives. If you can't get one let me
know and I'll send you mine.

Another alternative is to access the data from OzTiVo. I think I have
a perl script at home which I downloaded and configured from their web
site which extracts the data from their program database. The plus
sides of this are that this is sanctioned and the data is not
copyrighted as it's re-entered from the public domain (as I understand
it). The downside is that the data's not quite as good as NineMSN,
but a lot of work seems to be being done to improve it; also, when I
tried using it, I found I wasn't able to get 7 full days in advance
which is the main reason I went back to NineMSN, but I keep the script
in case I need it as a backup solution.

I also had the problem that mythtvsetup wasn't storing the starting
channel. When I looked at the database (using phpmyadmin) I saw there
were two fields, I forget the names exactly but I think one was
'channel start', and one was called 'tuner start' ( or something like
that). I had to set the 'tuner start' field, to get it to work.

Yes, good to see it solved. Just wondering what version of Myth. Mine
was happy with the start channel I put in using mythtv-setup. - version
 0.18.1 here.

I'm running 0.18.1 too. Initially, start channel was 3, which was
fine until I renumbered all the channels (to get rid of some I didn't
want to see and re-order the rest) starting from 1000.

mythtvsetup wouldn't let me change the start channel from 3. Well I
could enter the change but it wouldn't stick.

Looking in the database, there are two fields in the cardinput table:
tunechan and startchan. Manually changing startchan to 1000 also
wouldn't stick, but setting tunechan to 1000 did the trick (actually I
set them both).

I must admit I don't really understand what I was doing, but I was
happy to get it working and maybe this would help someone else.

AW: [mythtv-users] Can't connect to database

Are you sure, your mysql service is running ?
Can you connect to the databsae on the command prompt ?
Open a shell and type in mysql -u root mythconverg. After that type in
show tables; If you see the list of tables, the database seems to be
present.
If you want to reinstall the database do the following steps :
Open a shell and type in mysql -u root. Then enter drop database
mythconverg; (This will delete your current mythtv-database). After that
exit mysql. Now type in mysql -u root /path_to_the_file/mc.sql (will
create a new empty database)

if you need more help, give me more details.

It is being recorded with a visionplus DVB-T card (PAL
standard-Australia). The resoloution of the file seems to be
720xsomething. Should I be changing something so that it is recorded
in an easier to view format for PAL. Maybe this cannot be changed ?

I first problem (display not defaulting to the correct aspect ratio)
is probably because you need to add some DisplaySize settings to your
Xorg / Xfree86 config file to let Myth know that your display is 16:9
/ 4:3. Search the archives for more details, it's been covered many
times.

Sorry but I can't help with the second problem, i've never tried
writing DVB-T recordings to a DVD (yet). It's probably worth noting
that the DVB-T transmission has a resolution that's perfectly suited
for display on a PAL TV (at least it is here in the UK, I can't
believe it would be different in Aus or set-top-boxes would have to
scale the image before displaying it), so that's unlikely to be the
source of the problem.

The pixmaps that I see in mythweb and in the frontend (I don't show live

I'll put examples up somewhere if anyone is interested.

Hi,

Looking into more aspects of htpc's I'm wondering what sort of dvb/dab

available in Norway, but DAB radio is now pretty widespread and there are
plans to begin broadcasting DVB-T commercially from next year. I've looked

are NTSC only. This explains why I haven't seen them for sale here. What
are the best supported alternatives so far offering dvb-t and dab support?

2005-07-26 Thread Phill Edwards
Looking into more aspects of htpc's I'm wondering what sort of dvb/dab
hardware would be the best here. As far as I know there is still no DVB
available in Norway, but DAB radio is now pretty widespread and there are
plans to begin broadcasting DVB-T commercially from next year. I've looked
at the pcHDTV website and it looks as if the analoge tuners of their cards
are NTSC only. This explains why I haven't seen them for sale here. What
are the best supported alternatives so far offering dvb-t and dab support?

Your question is very confusing. Do you want to know which cards
support PAL analogue? Or do you want to know which cards would be good
for PAL DVB?

If it's analogue I think you'll find most of the analgue cards support
NTSC as well as PAL. It's just a matter of configuring them. Have a
look at the gossamer-thread archives and you'll find heaps of info on
analogue cards. Or

[mythtv-users] Transcode still broken in FC4?

2005-07-26 Thread Pat Vaughan
I saw some time ago that transcode was fixed in the atrpm repository, and
I have the latest rpms. I'm trying to make an excellent copy of a DVD,
and have lots of free space. The DVD gets ripped, but during the
transcoding the files just disappear. No file is written to the mythvideo
directory, and the ripped file is deleted as well. I don't see anything
in the mythbackend or mtd log. Making a perfect copy works fine.

Is this a known problem, or am I special? And, what can I do to diagnose
this?

Thanks.

Not really - I had a fair amount of trouble with ALSA, but once I got

unscientific fiddling with the mixer to work out which sliders to

If I was in your situation I'd be looking at permissions on the

I'd only be guessing.

Maybe someone else can help you..

Cory, do you have to tweak any rc files or with ratpoison? I spent a couple

fvwm2 working. Both times there was one or two problems that I could not

background.

The only ratpoison setting I tried to mess with was to fix the

it is made fullscreen. I also believe that if a new window is drawn, it
becomes active and is thus fullscreen. Toggling from one to the other
requires a screen-like keystroke... 'Ctrl-t, 0' for the 0th window, etc.
Pulling up an xterm is 'Ctrl-t, n' for a New window.

Hope that helps all I can suggest is to give it a try. It's
about as lightweight as a window manager can be.

That is tremendous news, after trying this without any luck for more

Could you tell me what sort of source material you are playing through

 I have one of these:
Creative Sound Blaster Live! 24-bit External Sound Card

This is the exact one, here:
 http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0009AHV8U/ref=pd_sr_ec_ir_ce/202-9112771-6976659

It's a USB sound card with a free remote control (quite nice and very
small, shirt pocket sized - I use it with a serial receiver).

I have it plugged into a Cyrus AV8 via the optical out. It works
perfectly, out of the box with no effort as well. I get stereo and
Dolby Digital through it from MythTV and stereo from mpd.

I've even modified MythTV to pass DTS through it, a patch I'll tidy up and
 submit next month.

My system is FC3, myth 18.1, and I set the audio output device to
'ALSA:hw:1'. Also tick the box for AC3 output. No .asoundrc file (or
whatever it's called) needed. I use the 'Internal' player for mythvideo.

 Cheers,

 Martin.

[mythtv-users] [OT] directory structure for myth backend / storage server

Hi,

I'm putting together a storage server for my house. I'd like to

like some advice on how to logically set up the directory structures.
I'm not too familiar with the Linux standard directories (like /usr and

My main idea is to use most of the disk space as an XFS LVM and mount
that somewhere. This partition would hold myth recordings, mp3s,

be logical to place this under the /usr/share directory, like

You can name the mount point anything you want. I use
/store and then have directories under that called
/store/record , /store/music , /store/video , etc.
Basically just
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/# mkdir /store
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/# mount /dev/mapper/vg-myth /store
then make all your directories, this assumes you named
your logical volume vg-myth

[mythtv-users] BUG ? - displaying Polish national characters

2005-07-26 Thread Warpme

Hi *

I have strange problem with national characters in MythTV.
Distro is KnoppMyth 5A16.

When I fill database from XML file, some of Polish national characters
are displayed not correctly. But what interesting - not everywhere !

For example:
Going to media library-watch recordings:
-I have properly displayed characters in list of recordings area (upper
area of screen)

-wrongly displayed on recording description (lower are of screen)

Encoding is UTF-8, and I check XML file under mozilla - all national
characters are OK in Mozilla.

Where is problem ?

[mythtv-users] EPIA M10k: TV picture adjustments - how ?

2005-07-26 Thread Warpme

Hi *

I have almost fully functional MythTV system (based on M10k PVR250) :-).

MythTV is really incredible piece of software. BIG Thx for authors this
beautiful piece of code :-o

Now, I want to move system to living room for enjoying it with family.

But I have small problem: when I connect system to my TV (via S-video) -
I see correct picture on TV, but size brightness/contrast/saturation
definitely needs some adjustments.

For example: height/width of the picture does not take up the whole
height/width of the TV - so on my 29' TV picture has size approx. 27' :-(

Is there some way for adjusting this (like nvtv in nVidia world) ?

Thx in advance !

[mythtv-users] DViCO FusionHDTV DVB (ATSC/QAM) and MythTV

2005-07-26 Thread Todd Ignasiak
Some people were having trouble getting the FusionHDTV3 QAM cards
working with MythTV. So, here is a short summary of how I got MythTV
working with my FusionHDTV3 card. This process should be similar
for other DVB cards. I am able to receive both Over-The-Air
broadcasts (ATSC broadcasts using 8VSB) and clear channels on my
Comcast cable system using QAM256.

- Linux OS Install. I used Gentoo AMD64. (Basic OS install
setup.. load standard packages + requirements for MythTV)

  - Xorg, KDE, MySQL, etc.

- Update kernel to 2.6.13rc3-mm1, which includes FusionHDTV and
general DVB updates.
   - Make sure to include modules for Video4Linux, DVB, Conexant
2388x (plus DVB), and lgdt3302 frontend

- Rebuild NVidia drivers for new kernel

- In Gentoo's /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6, I load:

cx88-blackbird
dvb-core
lgdt3302
cx88_dvb

- use dvb-apps to confirm that card is recognized and functional.
Check the docs in the dvb-apps package for details and channel config
files. I am using the QAM/Cable channel frequency configs here.

  - azap -r C79 -c QAM_Channels.conf
- this should output lines showing FE_HAS_LOCK, like the
following:
status 1f | signal ffa2 | snr | ber | unc |
FE_HAS_LOCK

  - Leave azap running, and in another terminal run dvbtraffic, it
should show information about the PIDs seen in the transport stream
on that channel.

--- Once you've confirmed that the card is functioning correctly, go
on to the MythTV setup.

- Install MySQL, set to run on system startup, set root password
  - Follow mysql setup: http://www.mythtv.org/docs/mythtv-
HOWTO-6.html ( Install MySQL, start server, set admin account and
define password, input the MythTV schema with mc.sql, set basic
access privilegs so MythTV can talk to database)
  - Setting root password is not covered in the MythTV document,
MySQl docs cover this: http://dev.mysql.com/doc/mysql/en/default-
privileges.html

- Install MythTV. Most Linux distro's will have a recent version
available via their package manager. Depending on the build options
used to create the available package, it may or may not have all the
necessary options (DVB support is needed, XvMC support is useful,
etc.).
  - I used subversion (svn) to grab the latest development snapshot
( see http://cvs.mythtv.org/ ), or grab a tar file of the source for
the current stable version from mythtv.org
  - Use 'configure' to set up mythtv with needed options ( --enable-
dvb --enable-xvmc --enable-lirc --enable-proc-opt --enable-opengl-
vsync )

 - make
 - make install

Run mythtv-setup

Basic Setup:
- entered mysql user/passwd defined above
- Backend setup, ATSC TV Format us-cable frequencies

Capture Card Setup:
  Type: DVB
(Should show card 0 as DViCO FusionHDTV 3 Gold-Q -- or similar)

Video Sources:
Name video source and input zap2it account information. Retrieve
Lineups

Input Connections:
  Select Video source defined above.
Set Starting Channel to a known valid channel you receive. If
MythTV starts up and cannot tune a channel, it doesn't react well.

Scan for Channels.
First, select an ATSC scan, to scan for OTA/8VSB channels (even if
you're using QAM / Cable --- (Is this still necessary?))

Then, do a QAM scan, which should result in more channels found. If
your cable company is broadcasting the PSIP channel data, the
channels should be automatically detected. For channels without PSIP
data, you will need to manually edit the channel data (in the mysql
database) to enable those channels.

you definitely want to automatically focus on the top window.

I have chosen 'ratpoison' as my WM of choice. Perfect for a

Ditto. I wouldn't use ratpoison on a desktop machine, but it's great

way I can watch it PIP-style while doing other things.

[mythtv-users] Possible to manually add QAM channel information?

2005-07-26 Thread bmerrill Merrill
I would like to get QAM working with MythTV. I am able to watch QAM HDTV from
my cable provider using a combination of dvb-apps, dvbtraffic and mplayer but
scanning for the channels using the latest MythTV cvs doesn't seem to work,
i.e. it doesn't detect the channels on the first pass and gets stuck on
subsequent scanning of existing transports. My understanding from the few
scant threads I've been able to find on the subject seem to indicate that my
cable provider is not transmitting certain information that Myth requires. I
have tried calling them and speaking to the engineers but have not been able to
make much headway through the red tape, though my limited knowledge on what
exactly is missing probably doesn't help either.

However, I was wondering, if I have collected all the relevant info from
dvb-app such as Video PID, Audio PID, etc, would it be fairly straight forward
to manually add that information directly into MySQL? I am certainly no expert
with MySQL but I think I could figure out the relevant commands if someone
could point me in the direction of the relevant table(s) that I would need to
modify. But of course if someone knows the actual command that would be very
much appreciated as well. Or is there perhaps an even easier way than
modifying MySQL directly? Or should I not waste my time trying, i.e. a fix is
imminent?

Thank you for any help.

Thanks for the pointer. I will try this out after I attempt the next

Then, do a QAM scan, which should result in more channels found. If
your cable company is broadcasting the PSIP channel data, the
channels should be automatically detected. For channels without PSIP
data, you will need to manually edit the channel data (in the mysql

How can we tell mythtv whether to scan using VSB or QAM ??? Is this one
of the newer features found in the new subversion release of mythtv? I
cannot find a method for this in my gentoo version of mythtv.

It is one of the options on the Channel Scan page.I don't have
access to that system right now, but I believe there is a pull-down
menu for selecting ATSC or QAM256 scan types in the channel scan page.
This was in all the versions I have tried.

You can do this by modifying one of the tables in mysql. Take a look at
http://www.pchdtv.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=882 for an idea of what
you'll need to do. You will need to know a bit about mysql commands.
Here's a rundown of what you'll need to do:

$ mysql -u mythtv -p mythtv
(login to mysql)

mysql use mythconverg;
(all myth data is in the mythconverg database - do this before any of
the following commands)

mysql describe channel;
(displays the structure of the channel table - this is the one you need
to modify)

mysql describe dtv_multiplex;
(you'll need some data from this table as well)

mysql select mplexid,frequency from dtv_multiplex;
(you might just want to cut paste this into a file and/or print it out
so you can refer back to it)

mysql select chanid,channum,freqid,mplexid,serviceid from channel;
(shows all the necessary fields you'll care about in the channel table)

The above commands, along with what's posted at that pchdtv.com url,
should be enough for you to manually configure your QAM channels. The
only really tricky part is figuring out what you should use for the
serviceid since that requires a bit of trial error with the dvb-apps.
It's based on the audio/video PID's but it's just a sequence #, not the
actual PID's...

Re: [mythtv-users] Possible to manually add QAM channel information?

2005-07-26 Thread Todd Ignasiak
I posted a bit of information on this in the pchdtv.com forum:
http://www.pchdtv.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=882

Basically, there are two tables you need to be concerned with,
channel and dtv_multiplex. Channel has the basic channel mapping
info, with xmltvid, and refers to an entry in dtv_multiplex. The
dtv_multiplex entry has the actual channel frequency.

I modified the channel configuration in mythweb to allow editing of
the relevant channel fields. I will try to create a patch for that
tonight, so you can use that if you want. That would still not
address the entry in the dtv_multiplex table, which is normally
created when doing the channel scan.

like some advice on how to logically set up the directory structures.
I'm not too familiar with the Linux standard directories (like /usr and
/etc) and so am a little confused where to put things.

It's mostly a matter of personal preference unless you are trying to
integrate more than one access method. My current arrangement is:

Two Maxtor drives (hda, hdc) and a WD drive (hde) partitioned as:
 /dev/hda1 24Mb FAT16 (DOS rescue)
 /dev/hda2 24Mb ext2 (/boot)
 /dev/hda3 149Gb raid autodetect
 /dev/hda5 512Mb swap
 /dev/hdc1 149Gb raid autodetect
 /dev/hdc5 512Mb swap
 /dev/hde1 149Gb raid autodetect
 /dev/md0 raid5 {hda3 hdc1 hde1} xfs (/)

Yes, you CAN put your root directory on RAID-5. You just have to build
a kernel with static RAID-5 support instead of using modules. You also
need to put the kernel somewhere that lilo or grub can find it, which
is why I have an ext2 boot partition. Since I still have lots of space
left on hda and hdc (the Maxtor 160's are about 4Gb larger than the WD
160) I may create a RAID-1 array for /boot as lilo and grub both know
how to boot from RAID-1.

The directory structure on the back-end looks a bit like:
/var/cache/mythtv = spool for live TV (installation default)
/var/lib/mythtv = storage for .nuv files (installation default)
 /home/samba/multimedia/dvd = ripped DVDs
 /home/samba/multimedia/music = mp3s
/home/samba/multimedia/thumbs = bitmaps used by mythvideo listing
/home/samba/multimedia/video = mpegs from internet or nuvexport
 /nfs/music - /home/samba/multimedia/music
 /nfs/thumbs - /home/samba/multimedia/thumbs
 /nfs/video - /home/samba/multimedia/video

I run nfs because I use two front-end machines and one stand-alone
back-end machine with no video-out capability. All three of them look
for content in /nfs (for the sake of consistency), with the only
difference being that the two front-end machines mount the directories
using nfs whereas the back-end machine just follows the symbolic links
to the storage area.

Running Samba allows me to view non-Myth content (including files that
have been run through the nuvexport process) using Windows Media Player
on one of the desktops when the XBOX and big-screen TV are otherwise
engaged and I don't want to start a fight or reboot my desktop into
Linux.

Yes, I could have used smbmount and just skipped nfs entirely, but
where's the geek-factor in *that*? :-P To be honest, I'd be
interested in hearing back from people about the relative safety of the
two mounting methods when a network failure occurs. Which filesystem
blocks versus failing, and does either impact the kernel? Older
versions of nfs used to panic the kernel

Before I switched to RAID I used to mount the second or third hard
drives using an abbreviated device name in the root directory and then
sym-link whatever content they were supposed to hold. For example, I
would mount /dev/hdc1 as /hdc1 and then make sym-links from /home to
/hdc1/home, /var to /hdc1/var, etc. The reason I used this method was
so that all of the redirected directories would share the pool of free
space and I wouldn't have to think about wasted drive space when /home
was full and /var was still half empty I got all the benefits of a
single partition with the benefits of splitting some directories onto
other drives. Think of it as a poor man's LVM. :-)

The HD-2000 was OTA-only. The HD-3000 also does QAM as well as ATSC.
(The HD-2000 is no longer being sold.)

The Air2PC can send only the requested program stream instead of the
full transport stream, reducing the data sent over the PCI bus and
somewhat reducing the CPU overhead. They do both ATSC and QAM.

I don't know anything about the Fusion HDTV cards, but apparently they
also do both ATSC and QAM.

So all three cards should work with the right drivers for either ATSC or
QAM. I don't know which one works best, which is an important question
if you're pulling in an imperfect OTA signal.

Check your X log file, and make certain the noscale mode is being used.
You may have a mistake in your conf file, or the version of your driver
may not have that mode. The log file should give a clue.

Use an appropriate video mode. For PAL land that would be
720x576Noscale, or for NTSC 720x480Noscale. This modes have a
reasonable amount of overscan and have the added benefit of better

I realize the PCHD3000 is the safe bet as it is well supported

[mythtv-users] A/V Sync Lost after Transcoding

2005-07-26 Thread zoiks2004-ivtv
I'm using the PVR 350's encoder to record programs in
Myth. I'm also transcoding recordings in the
background to mpeg4. (The new xv/yuv support in ivtv
is amazing.)

A problem I'm having is that many shows have an audio
delay (audio is delayed w.r.t. video) when they've
been transcoded, but not before being transcoded. Why
is that and what can be done about it? I understand
there are problems with the hardware encoder in that
it can generate screwy timestamps, but seriously, if
it can be played without sync problems, why can't it
be transcoded without sync problems?

I'm using Myth 0.18.1 and ivtv 0.3.7a. I'm *not*
using the 350's mpeg2 decoder to watch video.

[mythtv-users] OS X, MythTV 0.18.1, watch LiveTV crash

2005-07-26 Thread Robert Karaffa

hi folks,
my KnoppMyth backend runs beautifully, although I see stealing a
buffer errors about once every 10 days or so. Haven't pinned-down the
prob yet.

having said that, my two frontends are:
-KnoppMyth Dell Latitude laptop
-Mac G4 TiBook

The Dell almost never needs any attention. It just works.
The Mac...well, sometimes it will let me watch TV, sometimes it won't.

When it works, it works great. Watching Live TV is really not my
intended use of MythTV, because I mostly watch videos and listen to
music (heck, I don't even record any TV shows). However, there are
times when I have guests who will want to watch Live TV...and yes, that
does suck. I HATE Live TV. Did I mention that it sucks?

The Mac version of Myth that I use is 0.18.1.
I thought I had figured out why it would crash when attempting to start
watching Live TV (trashing the theme cache folder in ~./mythtv...but
apparently that's not the cure).

Is anybody working on MythonMacOSX? I've not seen any posts on it
lately...that would be a bummer.

Re: [mythtv-users] A/V Sync Lost after Transcoding

2005-07-26 Thread Joe Votour
Have you tried playing the recorded file (the
non-transcoded one) in something other than MythTV
(i.e. mplayer or xine)?

I've noticed that the recordings I get off of my
PVR-500 and PVR-250 are sometimes out of sync. MythTV
can compensate for this, depending on the options you
have selected (I know that there is an option for
syncing, I believe video to audio, which will drop
some frames). Of note is that you're not using the
PVR-350 TV-Out (as I don't, I use a GeForce 5200FX), I
suspect if you ran the data through the PVR-350
TV-Out, it would play back perfectly.

I've experienced this first hand (just last week, in
fact). At least one previous message on this mailing
list, and the ivtv mailing list suspects it to be a
Hauppauge firmware issue.

It will do s-video out or composite video out. However if you want spdif
digital audio out you cannot also have composite out, as the only
composite socket switches between tv-out and spdif.

You can still use s-video out though, and a convertor. Most electronics

[mythtv-users] Backend hang after ivtv error

2005-07-26 Thread Petersen Curt
For users devs:
I'm using two cards in my system: A hauppauge PVR-500 and a hauppauge
bt878-based card.
Has anyone had any problems with:

1) ivtv giving a DMA error in the log, and then
2) mythbackend fails to record using that tuner until restarted, and
3) frontends/web stop responding and repeatedly logs waiting for
thread forever.
Everything works 90% of the time. This error just comes up
occasionally - more often when I'm recording 2-3 shows at once.

Anyone have any suggestions to improve stability? What encoder
firmware are people having luck with out there? I'm using 0x02040011
and ivtv-0.3.7a.

For the devs:
I've tracked it down to a pthread_join() statement in tv_rec.cpp. It
appears that when the scheduler things the recording has finished, the
backend gets stuck waiting forever for the encoder thread to
complete, which is started with pthread_create() in the SpawnEncoder
function (or something like thatnear the top of the same file).

So I know it's an ivtv error and trust me, I'm working on trying to
fix that as fast as I can. But for now, would it be possible for
mythbackend to recover from it? Perhaps replace the pthread_join()
with a non-blocking call and timeout after waiting a few seconds? Or
perhaps the encoder thread can exit prematurely if it doesn't get a
buffer from the ivtv module for awhile?

Also, I just checked out the source from the subversion fixes branch
last night and installed it today. Should I expect any better
behavior from that? Or should I just roll with the 0.18.1 release?
I'm not using DVB.just a PVR-500 and bt878 card.

No. The tveeprom module is only used to autodetect the card's hardware,
so if autodetection works right, you're good to go. The IvyTV version
of tveeprom was created specifically to deal with all the new hardware
changes--especially those brought about by the introduction of the

I had something very similar to that happen. In my case, the ide
interface to /dev/hde would also fail and my raid would fall back into
degraded mode. It turned out that my motherboard uses the same PCI
interrupt for two of the slots. Moving the cards around solved the
problem.

The other thing that sometimes happened (but hasn't recently, and may be
related) is that when I selected the menu entry for live TV Myth would
tell me the tuner was busy recording, but the status page said it was
idle and the recording page showed no recording in progress. I'm
guessing this was because ivtv was failing but Myth didn't know why.

[mythtv-users] Dual PVR 250s inexplicably stopped working

2005-07-26 Thread Larry K
Cross-posted from ivtv-devel list:

Hello,

I have a FC3 based system with dual PVR-250s, and everything was working just fine for several months.

Then something happened. I'm not sure what. The PVRs just stopped working correctly

I fiddled around, switching the PVRs around into different PCI
slots. I was never able to determine that either card had
gone bad using this musical chairs scenario. That is, there was
no rhyme or reason to what card would work in what slot, so I thought
maybe
the MoBo went bad. I replaced the MoBo with a new
copy. That didn't seem to help.

I swapped out the power supply, too, just in case. That didn't help.

So, where it stands now is... if only one PVR is installed in the
system, it just does not work. Neither card. However, If
I install both PVRs, one of them works and the other doesn't.

By work, I mean mean the test video capture via cat /dev/videoX test.mpg,
then playback via mplayer, as described in Jarod's guide:
http://wilsonet.com/mythtv/fcmyth.php

FYI, I was able to run these same tests with success 2 months ago, so I'm pretty sure I am doing it right.

When both cards are installed, only one works and the other produces
static. If only one card is installed, and it doesnt seem to
matter which card or which PCI slot, I get static.

Where can I find documentation describing the possible ivtv driver settings that go into modprobe.conf?

What ivtv diagnostics tools are available to help me isolate the cause of this problem?

Any ideas appreciated,

Larry

Actually, the information was in the BIOS setup screen. There is
usually a page where you can manually force a PCI slot to a particular
IRQ, and on mine they were labelled PCI 1/5, PCI 2/6, PCI 3 and PCI 4,
so I shuffled things around until I was only using 1, 3, 4 and 6. Many
motherboards also link the IRQ for the last PCI slot to the AGP slot
(some mobo booklets suggest leaving the last PCI slot empty if you
install an AGP card), and the on-board USB and LAN hardware also
sometimes piggyback on the PCI/AGP IRQs. You'd think they would just
run a few more wires

[mythtv-users] dumb move -- lost mysql db -- restore tv files to db?

2005-07-26 Thread Joshua M. McClain

Hi guys

I recently decided I liked mythtv enough to buy real hardware for it, so
I did just that. Parts arrived, I got it put together, stage 1 gentoo,
the works.

I backed up all the storage directories for my test mythtv system, which
included a LOT of television recordings. I moved this backup to the new
mythtv system. All the music files and video files were scanned in with
success (ie: ID3 tags from the MP3s), but when I went to look at tv
recordings, nothing was there. Then it hit me -- I didn't back up the
DB...DOH!(And of course, the test sytem had already been wiped clean.)

So.. the question is:

Is there a way to restore to the db the listing of the nv tv recordings
and png images? Do these nv files store the tv equivalent of ID3 tags
so I don't simply get a raw listing of filenames? I realize I could
just move these files to the media/video area, but for various reasons,
I'd prefer them to be in tv recordings.

Thanks for the help.

Cheers,
Josh

I would like to get QAM working with MythTV. I am able to watch QAM HDTV from my cable
provider using a combination of dvb-apps, dvbtraffic and mplayer but scanning for the
channels using the latest MythTV cvs doesn't seem to work, i.e. it doesn't detect the
channels on the first pass and gets stuck on subsequent scanning of existing
transports. My understanding from the few scant threads I've been able to find on the
subject seem to indicate that my cable provider is not transmitting certain information
that Myth requires. I have tried calling them and speaking to the engineers but have not
been able to make much headway through the red tape, though my limited knowledge on what
exactly is missing probably doesn't help either.

Or should I not waste my time trying, i.e. a fix is
imminent?

You can do this by modifying one of the tables in mysql. Take a look at
http://www.pchdtv.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=882 for an idea of what
you'll need to do. You will need to know a bit about mysql commands.
Here's a rundown of what you'll need to do:

$ mysql -u mythtv -p mythtv
(login to mysql)

mysql use mythconverg;
(all myth data is in the mythconverg database - do this before any of
the following commands)

mysql describe channel;
(displays the structure of the channel table - this is the one you need
to modify)

mysql describe dtv_multiplex;
(you'll need some data from this table as well)

mysql select mplexid,frequency from dtv_multiplex;
(you might just want to cut paste this into a file and/or print it out
so you can refer back to it)

mysql select chanid,channum,freqid,mplexid,serviceid from channel;

Thanks for the information and the link. I haven't quite got it working
yet, but I think I'm close. I am guessing as you hypothesized that the
serviceid might be the wild card that isn't properly set and preventing
me from tuning the channel. As I have it configured now, when I start
up mythbackend I get the following output:

2005-07-26 22:58:36.221 Closing DVB channel

So I'm guessing that the Timeout Getting PMT error has to do with the
serviceid and myth not being able to find the video and audio PIDs, but
perhaps I'm wrong in that assumption and perhaps I have something
misconfigured elsewhere? If I run azap -r c110 for example and then
run dvbtraffic in another window, the video and audio pids appear to be
in the second grouping which according to the pchdtv thread above would
correspond to a serviceid value of 2, but I have tried setting the
serviceid with a value from 0 all the way up to 10 with no luck.

A general rundow of what I have done so far:
1. Added a video source corresponding to HDTV over the air stations
since these should be equivalent to HDTV cable without adding all of the
analog cable channels that would just get in the way.
2. Tried running Scan for channels first with terrestrial then again
with cable but it failed to add any channels, although it did add the

3. Ran mythfilldatabase to at least initialize the channel table

That would still not
address the entry in the dtv_multiplex table, which is normally
created when doing the channel scan.

subject seem to indicate that my cable provider is not transmitting certain information
that Myth requires. I have tried calling them and speaking to the engineers but have not
been able to make much headway through the red tape, though my limited knowledge on what
exactly is missing probably doesn't help either.

Hey Todd,
Thanks for the information and your help. It's been very useful so far
in helping me to understand what's going on. If you do get a chance to
generate a patch for being able to modify that information from mythweb
that would help me tremendously to not have to constantly dive into
mysql to fiddle with settings especially since I would have no idea what
to modify in mythweb or php to achieve the same result.

Thanks again,
Brian

[mythtv-users] Possible to keep multiple languages when transcoding?

2005-07-26 Thread Martin Bene
I'm capturing video using DVB-S cards; the recordings on several
channels have multiple languages (german + original english for
example).

If I transcode these (to mpeg4 for example), only the first language is
present in the new file - is there any way to keep both audio streams?

Thanks, Martin

[mythtv-users] Time/Date on Home Screen

2005-07-26 Thread Stefan Wrobel
I searched but (surprisingly) I couldn't find anything about this
one. Is there a reason that MythTV doesn't show the time/date on
the home screen? It seems only natural that somewhere it would
appear, but I haven't seen it, and I've checked different themes.
Is this in fact a theme-dependent issue, or just a MythTV issue?
Thanks,

Stefan Wrobel
