Or better might be Set to auto-expire or Cancel auto-expire. This wouldn't cause problems with people who are used to using the buttons as they are now. I see you both understand my point. Yes, it needs to indicate clearly what is meant, because, as it is now, Auto-expire does not actually do any auto-expiring, unlike play or delete buttons which do what they say. All it does is set a flag that let's it auto-expire later. Re: [mythtv-users] MythTV on Kanotix based Debian for HD-3000
I had this exact problem. The issue was GCC 4.0. I originally compiled mythtv with GCC 3.3, and recently had to recompile it. Unbeknownst to me, Debian had upgraded the default GCC to 4.0. Once I changed the symlinks back to 3.3, it compiled fine again. The obvious solution - dual tuner DVB cards - are on the horizon, so it depends how long you are prepared to wait! My Pundit-R system has 2 PCI cards on a riser (PVR and DVB-T) with no problems. The data rates transferred over the bus are very small compared to its capacity, so I wouldn't expect to have any problems with just 2 cards. Via make a 2 slot pci riser card. It has on board circuitry to provide power and IRQ control to both slots. (Most PCI riser cards require that a small daughter finger card be put into the second PCI slot to provide those capabilities to the second PCI slot). The Via card is specifically for the Travla cases I think, as the rise of the card must match the case mounting for the boards. However, if your case has the wrong spacing, the answer is to use a flexible extension between the VIA board and the Via PCI riser. That way you can meet any reasonably combination of horizontal and vertical displacement between where the motherboard has its PCI slot and where the case has its rear mounting slots. Geoff R. Would you say, then, that if I just want to watch SD (iow I don't need an HD-ready TV monitor) I'm better off connecting the mythtv frontend to a good computer monitor than having an S-Video TV monitor? I'm want to buy a decent 19" LCD monitor for TV viewing, and I was wondering whether it's better to go for an LCD TV (which is more expensive) or a good LCD computer monitor. I guess it's possible that the much higher impedance of the Mic input means that you're getting some sort of 'pick-up' within the 350. [mythtv-users] Not your everyday newbie questions
For the last few weeks I have been browsing every single website I can possibly imagine that deals with creating your own HD PVR HTPC. Without owning a HD set or service presently I find myself a touch limited when it comes to specific hardware connections/setups. I am well versed with the signals themselves but none of the company proprietary things that will definetly impact how you set up your box. I'd like to lay out my understanding of how to setup a system (backend and fronted in one box to start) so I can see exactly what I need to make my decisions on as well as to help out others in my position in the future. Please add any input you can. Starting from the signal itself. I plan to get DirecTV but may resort to Comcast if tree cover is an issue. Let's just assume DirecTV is available. The signal will come into through the wall via RG6 and I am assuming I will need to terminate it at their Satellite box. From the Satellite box which method do I use to bring it into the MythBox? My first thought would have been through Component/DVI or other video transport methods but reading through I find myself more confused as talk about Firewire comes into play as well as inputting the signal directly into the box. All sorts of questions about encrypted signals now come into my mind. This topic is very important to me as I can't seem to get a straight answer. (I plan to be purchasing a Samsung 61 DLP (HLR6167W) which contains almost every sort of connection available and the rest of the equipment has not been purchased so the sky is the limit when it comes to type of setup) After I have the signal into the MythBox (for simplicity let's assume just one tuner card, although the software side of multiple cards perplexes me as well!) it obviously needs to get to the television. This is where a video card that supports a HD-OUT method (component, HDMI, DVI, etc.) comes in. This sounds quite simple to me, but again, I believe firewire has entered the mix and that just confuses me as to how that could interact. If you do use firewire on either input/ output, would I still need a tuner card or video card? Other issues of note: As I've said I've done some research and come to see that the pcHDTV card does not decode NTSC (SD) signals. Does this mean I will have to have multiple cards to get the full spectrum of channels from my service? Is the control seamless through the Myth interface? My goal is to make this box operate as simply as possible. I currently use ReplayTV with a basic analog signal, it could not work more simple. When it comes to installing my Satellite service, is there a certain box or features I should request that would simplify the task of creating this PVR? Also, same question for Comcast or other cable providers if Satellite falls though. The software side I have yet to address as that can all be handled once I have the hardware in place. I anticipate that to be relatively painless compared to creating the box up to and including IR blasters/ serial connections, etc. I appreciate any responses and apologize for being any questions that may have already been asked but sometimes it is rather difficult to search for such specific concerns. Take a good wallpaper that is as big as a current lcd monitor's native resolution and compare that to a tv side by side. If you think the tv gives the better picture, well, then I'm surprised. I suspect part of the issue deals with removing interlacing artifacts and the interpolation a video card will do to stretch out an image. If you can look for a video card that does something better than simple linear interpolation. Most newer ati/nvidia once probably do something decent, but I haven't looked lately. As to the dinterlacing, well myth has a couple options. Finally unless your using a 350's s-video output, I doubt the signal is being reconstructed correctly to go to a tv and preserve the interlaced structure. Maybe nvidia's cards do it, but I doubt it. Without this preservation your again likely better off with a monitor. And also TV looks FAR better on an old fashioned CRT than an LCD or even a plasma TV. Sure, they are more convenient what with the slim size, and lower power consumption but they are just not as good for watching TV. Go to a TV shop and see for yourself. At any rate I personally think my vizio l32 lcd looks better than my old 32 inch crt, but thats still my opinion I suppose. I'm taking this lcd back when the winbook 32 arrives so I can get a 1:1 dot for dot display rather than the vizio's rescaling of the vga signal. I may make a better post tomorrow once I get it to play with, but if anyone wants a winbook 32 inch lcd you may want search for it via pricewatch.com. You should see it offered for $999 + 100 shipping instead of $1099 + ~$135 shipping at their web site. Also, if you want to use the monitor for anything other than tv, well then a monitor is better as well. For instance, I can read quite easily off this LCD monitor. Perhaps doing so sometimes will have some small benefit to my vision since it is farther away, although I'm obviously not an eye doctor... -Robert ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users

I use a pcHDTV HD3000 for OTA HD broadcasts, and also have a PVR-150 for capturing off cable. I have a Samsung 61 DLP as well, and I can tell you that once you have seen HDTV on this TV you will find ED acceptable, but you will not be satisfied with SD. So if you have a good selection of HD/ED programming, don't bother with SD. I use an nVidia 5200 video card with a DVI output to drive the Samsung at its native HD resolution (note that a PVR-350 and many other cards do not support HD resolution). It took a little research to set up xorg.conf, but the Samsung works surprisingly well with a DVI input. As far as hardware vs. software, I found just the opposite to be true. You will find you will spend a lot of time getting the right drivers, setting up xorg.conf properly, and understanding/configuring MythTV. MythTV has a ways to go before it's seamless; I'm having trouble right now getting Myth to switch easily between the HD3000 and PVR-150 for live TV viewing. Good luck! Robert, I appreciate your quick response, analyzing this setup is aggravating me as much as it excites me. I always love a good challenge. To address a few of your replies: Upon looking at costs/feasibility/implementation I am leaning more towards Comcast. The ability to potentially use that firewire connection really appeals to me. I hope someone with more experience with the firewire can answer this question : Will I be able to capture all content from the cable box (SD,HD local and HD encrypted) through the firewire cable? Will I also be able to change channels via it or will I need an IR blaster? Without the firewire connection am I correct in assuming that there is no way to capture HD encrypted content like HD Espn, HD TNT, HD Discovery, etc? Is this a blanket problem or are there ways around it? In regards to the 1:1 pixel mapping idea you suggested: Do you have any more information regarding this so I can look further into it, I am curious to find out more about it. Mark -- Well, after a little more searching, I found the following threads: http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/mythtv/users/151628?search_string=hd3000%20pvr-150 http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/ivtv/devel/24044?search_string=tveeprom;#24044 Looks like there's a known conflict between the PVR-150 and the HD3000 with the latest ivtv drivers. I'll report back what happens, though it might take me a while :) Mark So, I've removed the atrpm ivtv drivers, found a copy of the old 0.37a drivers, and complied and installed them by hand. Reboot, and no more error messages! The PVR-150 and pcHDTV3000 appear to be living in harmony. After testing in and out of mythtv, the PVR-150 is working like before, that is, perfectly. I found the thread Dennis recommended (http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/mythtv/users/150073?#150073) and followed the instructions there. I ran the qamscan that Dennis attached in that thread, and it found a bunch of good stations. Next, I tried to manually capture some HD channels (azap -r KTVUHD, then cat /dev/dvb/adapter0/dvr0 /tmp/out ) and, voila! I can capture HD from my cable connection! After experimenting with some of the channels found in channels.conf, I even found a few more channels I could capture. So far, here's what I've found: KNTVHD:74700:QAM_256:33:34:1 ESPNHD:74700:QAM_256:39:36:2 KNTV:74700:QAM_256:49:52:3 KGO HD:75300:QAM_256:33:34:1 KGO SD:75300:QAM_256:113:116:7 KQED-E:75300:QAM_256:49:52:3 KQED HD:75300:QAM_256:36:37:2 KQED-W:75300:QAM_256:65:68:4 LIFE:75300:QAM_256:81:84:5 KIDS:75300:QAM_256:97:100:6 KPIX DT:76500:QAM_256:49:52:7 KTVUHD:76500:QAM_256:145:148:9 KPIX DT:55500:QAM_256:49:52:7 KTVUHD:55500:QAM_256:145:148:9 (odd that it found KPIX and KTVU at two different frequencies, but that doesn't seem to affect anything) Anyway, I'm confident my hardware issues are behind me. Onto the MythTV setup: I'm following the instructions in this post (http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/mythtv/users/150118?do=post_view_threaded#150118) to manually configure my channels. To start, I'm just using one channel to start (KGO HD, which is cable station 707). I figure out that the frequencyid is 75300, the mplexid is 25, and the serviceid is 1, so I enter those figures into the mythtv/channel table, per the instructions. Now, I start mythfrontend. I go to Watch TV, and pull of the onscreen guide. I select channel 707, but only get static. Thinking that it might be trying to use the PVR-150, I switch tuners (pressing Y). Now, I just get a black screen. After about a minute or so, LiveTV stops and Myth goes back to the TV menu. [mythtv-users] S-video TV-out to TV's composite input (solution)
In a change from the most common form of posting on this list, I thought I'd share a solution rather than a problem: Challenge: connect my new secondary front-end, which has an Nvidia card with s-video TV output, to an older TV with only composite inputs. Solution: build this circuit: http://www.tkk.fi/Misc/Electronics/circuits/svideo2cvideo.html using a 5-cent ceramic capacitor and a couple of cable ends. Works great, and less filling than buying a commercial S-video-to-composite adapter. [mythtv-users] OT: MythTV Home Automation
I have come to assume that the people that frequent this list have interests similar to my own. (The ever-persistent desire to make one thing do many things). So I am looking for some advice. I would like to automate various appliances around my house using X-10 modules, but have them controlled by my computer. I am aware of Mister Home, and it looks cool, but it doesn't seem to do what I am looking for. What I would like to do is call my computer, and via touch-tones control the X-10 devices. I have DSL, and NEVER use my home phone line. So if I hooked it up to a cheap $10 modem card, would it be possible to do this? An example might be to call home and turn on the AC on the way home from school by punching in *9. Or be able to call home as I am pulling out of the drive way in the morning to turn off the porch light by pushing *8. It seems to me that this is old technology, so it might already be out there - maybe even so old that no one knows about it any more. Re: [mythtv-users] Not your everyday newbie questions
On Tue, 2005-10-11 at 13:56 -0400, R. Stavros Bezas wrote: Robert, In regards to the 1:1 pixel mapping idea you suggested: Do you have any more information regarding this so I can look further into it, I am curious to find out more about it. 1:1 mapping only applies to discrete devices like lcd's and dmd (digital micromirror device). Thanks to google I now know that is what DLP uses. (This is difference between a technical article read years ago and something useful.) At any rate those devices have some real physical resolution since there is a discrete number of elements. Perhaps it is 1920x1080. I don't know. What you want to do is set your graphics card to that physical resolution and use a dvi/hdmi cable to send it to your tv. Now the key to 1:1 pixel mapping is your sending digital data for say coordinate 100,500 over that dvi cable. That data should only be used to change the intensities associated with the 100,500th element. That is all there is to it. One would think it would be obvious and work everywhere there is a digital connection, but it doesn't. The vizio I have, for one, I couldn't get it to work with the hdmi connection, but apparently many tv's take that digital signal and rescale it and make it fit the available pixels, hence even if you input the exact size for your xorg.conf file, you get something that is slightly smeared on your screen. How do you determine if this is happening? Well create a png file that is composed of a black and white lines arranged vertically. Black lines for the even numbered lines, and white for the odd or visa versa. Show that on your tv and if it looks even and uniform then you have 1:1 mapping, if not, then not. Again, if its mostly video your showing, I doubt you can really tell from a few feet away. You might tell with text, and well it will be obvious with that kind of prepared image. In general though a 1:1 mapping should make things a little sharper than it otherwise be when sent from a computer. Note that you may not be able to manage your full resolution as a 1:1 mapping. The panel I'm getting is 1366x768 and I've read reports that you can do 1360x768 and throwing away 6 lines. At any rate good luck.. -Robert ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users

Would you say, then, that if I just want to watch SD (iow I don't need an HD-ready TV monitor) I'm better off connecting the mythtv frontend to a good computer monitor than having an S-Video TV monitor? The horizontal refresh rate is also important. If you are in PAL-country with 50 half-frames per second and the LCD-monitor refreshes with 60 Hz, then you will get bad quality. I hope not, by the time you add up what I have invested in parts for all my Myth learning it would end being DVR rentals for about 10 years. :) No, the Comcast HD-DVR is crap.My sister has one and the storage space is severely lacking.I don't recall off hand how many hours it can store, but it's not much more than 10, if that. Also, they seem to have a serious bug in them.If the DVR is powered off and it is scheduled to record a show it will actually begin the recording, but not display to the user that it is powered on and working. If you then hit the power button while it is recording it will turn on and display video so you can watch TV on the second tuner. However, the second tuner is MUTED.I have yet to find a way to get it to unmute other than turning off the DVR (which kills whatever recording was in progress) and then turning it back on.Also, it clearly has two tuners since you can record and watch at the same time, but I also haven't yet been able to get it to record two shows at once.If there's two tuners in there I see no reason why it shouldn't be able to record two shows if I'm not using either of the tuners to watch TV.I agree that the Comcast DVR isn't the best of them, but it really isn't all that bad once you figure out its quirks. To help with your sister'sproblems I'll share my experiences.First, there are several versions of their HDTV DVR out there that lookalmost identical from the outside. The three I know of are, in order from oldest to newest: 80GB single tuner, 80GB dual tuner, 120GB dualtuner. They'll upgrade your box (or at least they did for me) withoutany hassle if you ask. The 120GB dual tuner device hasn't given me any trouble about recording two shows at once.Second, you must realize that the different encodings use different bitrates and thus take up different amounts of room. You probably alreadyknew this, but just in case: HDTV uses the most space followed by SDTV analog. SDTV digital takes up the least space. I get a heck of a lot ofSDTV storage, analog or digital. I'm not sure how many hours of HD the120GB will hold. The mute-on-wakeup problem plagued me for a very long time. However, I eventually realized that it isn't the DVR's fault, it's the universalremote that is causing problems. You see, Motorola designed the DVR tobe polite when hooked up to non-TV sound systems, which people quite often can forget to turn off. It mutes itself to prevent you from beingstartled out of your mind when a show starts up in the middle of thenight or something. Anyway, by default Comcast sets up your remote tocontrol the TV's volume no matter if the rest of the remote is on Cable, TV, or Aux. To unmute the cable box, you have to disable this so thatyou can control all the volumes separately. After unmuting, I usuallyswitch it back to TV controls all mode.To enter independent volume mode: 1. Press cable (the cable button blinks once)2. Press and hold setup until the cable button blinks twice3. press 9, press 9 press 3, press VOL-. The cable button will blink 4 times4. You can now control the cable box audio when in cable mode and the TV audio in TV mode.To enter global mode (TV volume is always controlled):1. Press TV (the TV button blinks once)2. Press and hold setup until the TV button blinks twice3. press 9, press 9 press 3, press the TV button. The TV button will blink twice.4. Any time you press the volume buttons it will now control the TV volume.I made myself a tiny little label and taped it to the back of the remoteso I don't forget how to do it. Also, there's a timeout between each of the steps above; I think its three seconds. The problems I have with the DVR is that it seems to forget to recordshows in a series sometimes. It also sometimes has trouble telling if ashow is first run or a repeat. Some shows it doesn't even identify as a series. For example, The HDTV version of the Simpsons never records asa series; I have to do it manually. The muting problem really stinks, but I can work around it.Patrick___ mythtv-users mailing listmythtv-users@mythtv.orghttp://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org
[mythtv-users] FC4 and HD-3000 - my steps to success... and a couple questions.
After months of lurking around this forum, and after a several failed installations, I FINALLY havewatched someHDTV via Myth! WooHoo I'm not out the woods yet, nor even close to being able to present this project to my wife, but I thought I would share some of the extra steps I had to do make it work. Hoping this might keep a few folks from having to spend hours scouring the web for answers... My dedicated backendsetup: Tyan S2466N Dual AMD 1600's 512 MB RAM Nvidia FX-5200 (2x)160GB Western Digital IDE (RAID 1 - software) 3ware 9508-SMI 8 port SATA RAID card (4x) 200GB Western Digital SATA (580GB RAID 5 - hardware) NEC DVD burner Intel Pro 1000XT PCI-X NIC (2x) pcHDTV HD-3000 (connected to UHF antenna) Sounblaster Audigy 2 (not working yet, seems to be a PCI resource conflict) Hauppauge PVR-500 (ivtv drivers not installed yet... too afraid of conflicts with the HD3000's!) I followed Jarod's awesomeFC4 HowTo guide. Without that document, I would have never been able to get up and running. However, it did seem WAY too easy at section 10 for the HD-3000 setup. Here's a couple things I had to do to make it work. 1. Whenattempting to configure my capture cards inmythtvsetup, I would get Could not open card #0 and Permission denied errors in the capture card settings. What I eventually figured out was that the mythtv user did not have permissions to access the DVB devices. I found a hint on the pcHDTV forums that suggested I edit 50-udev.rules file located in etc/udev/rules.d/ . Assuming your myth username is mythtv, add GROUP=mythtv to the last line of the file so that the line looks like this: KERNEL==dvb*, PROGRAM==/etc/udev/scripts/dvb.sh %k, NAME=%c, GROUP=mythtv Then reboot. This should give permission to the mythtv user to access the DVB devices. You should see the card name listed with the type ATSC. HOWEVER, after running a yum update again, it removed the changes, and I had to go back in and edit the file again. Anyone else know a better fix for the above issue, or how to make my fix permanent? 2. So, I was really excited once Myth could access my HD-3000 cards. I then proceeded through the rest of the setup steps, but once I got to the Channel Editor step, my card would never lock in any channels. It seemed to be going through the scanning process, but just would never find any. After further research, I found out that just having DVB drivers for the HD-3000 in the kernel wasn't enough to make the card work, but that it also needed firmware. So, I did a # wget http://pchdtv.com/downloads/firmware.tar.gzin the lib/ directory, and then a tar -xf firmware.tar.gz to extract the three files into the lib/firmware directory. (You should probably # rm firmware.tar.gzto remove the tar file from thelib/ directory). Now, when you do a channel scan, it should find some! Here's where myquestion is: Before I can do a channel scan, I am required to create a Video Source (Zap2it) and then assign it to my DVB cards in the Input connections screen. However, after doing a scan I then have duplicate channels; the ones from the scan and the one's from the Zap2It database. How do I combine the two so I don't have duplicates? Or, is it possible just to get programming info for the digital channels OTA? I'm really confused here on this... 3. This one is minor, but it did stump me for a few minutesso Ifigured I should share. When attemtpting to record content for the first time, I noticed the backend was throwing out permission errors on my /video/recordings directory. Make sure you have created /video/recordings and /video/buffer , and then issue a # chmod a+rwx /video/recordings and # chmod a+rwx /video/buffer so that MythTV can write files to the directories. Last question I really want to use my PVR-500 with the two HD-3000's. But last time I installed the ivtv drivers it broke the DVB drivers. Anyone else able to share their steps to success with the two cards? This is fun (?) ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users

On 11/10/05, Tomas Roos [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hello. Identical to users having digital satellite or cable and using a direct input on the PVR to record. Now I wish to have tabloids etc in MythTV to be able to choose a program for recording. I want MythTV to trigger an external program to send an IR signal to my receiver and change the channel I think you mean you want listings for all channels available on the DVB-T box and want to be able to select which programs to record using the guide? How I send IR signals I already know, it is quite easy with lirc or similar programs but do I have to have several channels configured in my MythTV to be able to use tabloids or how does it work? Is there a howto on this subject? Has anyone else done this before? Create a video source (called DigitalTerrestrial for example). Add all of the channels you want to be able to record from to this source (and configure your channel listings retrieval method)). Then assign this source to the composite or S-Video input on the PVR card in Input Connections. In a channel's setup, the freqid field is the value that you want MythTV to pass to the channel changer script. Add your remote control's listing to /etc/lircd.conf to enable your transmitter to emulate the DVB-T STB's own remote, and you should be up and running. On my system I use a combination of DVB-T cards, tuners, and direct inputs from digital cable boxes, and I think this combination covers most likely config scenarios. When configuring my system to be able to record from and control a digital cable box (using S-Video in, and a serial IR blaster), I added all of the channels available into MythTV, configured them with the same channel numbers as the cable guide, and then assigned the channel change script to the S-Video input on the PVR card as the 'external command'. The script is: #!/bin/sh REMOTE_NAME=DI4001N for digit in $(echo $1 | sed -e 's/./ /g'); do /usr/local/bin/irsend SEND_ONCE $REMOTE_NAME $digit sleep 0.5 done Simple to set up and hasn't failed yet! My nightly cron included (I didn't have a garage door ) a script to make sure appropriate lights were off, I'd make all the lights come on that were turned on with motion sensors brighten to 50% and dim back to 0%. The software would tell you the state of a given module with the status command. I had an 'away' routine (because of my guys night out crew but thats a different post) that would turn on and off certain lights in the house to make it look lived in, rather than one light coming on and staying on for several hours and then turn off. I would turn on a light in the living room starting at around 8:30pm in the summer. I'd let that run until about 10:30pm, then I would turn on the hall light for 10 minutes, and I'd have my bedroom light on the nighttable come on until 11:15. This simulated a night routine I normally would have. It was VERY effective, especially if I left my truck in the laneway. When I get home from work, I'll dig around and find all my old software. I had started writing preliminary docs trying to plan things like motion sensors and one for switches, and all kinds of things. Re: [mythtv-users] which is better, using S-Video or VGA?
Of course, you're correct and I agree with you that displaying non-TV output is far superior on a monitor. I was talking about the quality of the TV picture. The fast response time of the picture on a monitor is actually a disadvantage when displaying a 25Hz interlaced TV picture, especially for things like scrolling text and fast action, where the blurring caused by the slow refresh on a TV make the moving picture appear smoother. This is all just my opinion. I've also never investigated high end equipment because I don't have that kind of cash to spend on a TV, so it's possible that none of this applies to expensive equipment, though it has to be said, I still think the picture on the (much cheaper) CRTs in the TV shop is better than the LCD and plasma screens. cheers Andrew ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users

I believe this setting is in the Input Connections section. You select Tuner0 for the 250 and tell it which source is connected to that input. There is a box towards the bottom of that screen where you can enter an external channel changer command. Without the firewire connection am I correct in assuming that there is no way to capture HD encrypted content like HD Espn, HD TNT, HD Discovery, etc? Is this a blanket problem or are there ways around it? The problem isn't encryption, as HD content over component output isn't encrypted, the problem is simply a technical one. An uncompressed HD signal contains far more data than today's PC's can handle in software, and nobody makes a consumer priced encoder chip. For a crude idea of what is going on, my 1ghz PIII can barely keep up with encoding NTSC content. A 720p stream contains almost 8 times as mush data as a 480i signal. ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users

Well, this was backwards from what I should have done. I ended up with duplicate channel numbers in the mysql database, but only some of these had corresponding records in the dtv-multiplex table, the latter being populated by the scan program. I had to manually weed out the duplicates, making sure the remaining channels had valid mplexid and xmltvid fields (if I get these field names a little wrong, I going by memory). Yep, this is exactly what I did, and you're right, I found a BUNCH of duplicates in the 'channel' database table. So, after backing up that table, I removed all of the duplicate entries, also making sure that my source #1 channels (the PVR card) didn't overlap the source #2 (the pcHDTV) Interestingly, the only two channels that had mplexid fields were 702 and 707, two channels that I had set up manually in previous steps. That's ok for now, though, if I have to add the others manually, I can live with that. Make sure that there is a valid channel number in the startchan field (card table?). I set it to 702, the first HD channel I can receive The last piece of the puzzle was making sure the channels were assigned to a source in the channel config of mythtv-setup, then restart the backend. If any of these pieces are not in place, you get the famous 20 seconds of black screen, crashing backends, and meaningless error messages. I didn't check all of the channels, but I did make sure that 702 (my first HDTV channel) was set to a source that I'd previously set up in zap2it.com. 1. When attempting to configure my capture cards in mythtvsetup, I would get Could not open card #0 and Permission denied errors in the capture card settings. What I eventually figured out was that the mythtv user did not have permissions to access the DVB devices. I found a hint on the pcHDTV forums that suggested I edit *50-udev.rules* file located in * etc/udev/rules.d/* . Assuming your myth username is mythtv, add * GROUP=mythtv* to the last line of the file so that the line looks like this: *KERNEL==dvb*, PROGRAM==/etc/udev/scripts/dvb.sh %k, NAME=%c, GROUP=mythtv* Then reboot. Don't put customizations in the 50-udev.rules file. Take your entire line starting with KERNEL= and put it in a separate file called 10-mythtv.rules in the same directory. Udev reads the files in alpha-numeric order and will stop when it finds a match in your new file. Re: [mythtv-users] Controlling a cable box that outputs only on a single channel.
Disclaimer: I don't even have a cable STB, since I have analog cable. If the STB will only provide output on channel 3 (I am presuming that you are using a F-type coaxial cable to connect your PVR-250 to it based on this fact), then you will likely need to get the IRBlaster working now, and not later. Normally analog TV works by putting all of the channels into the spectrum, and the tuner in your TV just selects the frequency that it wants to listen to. However, in this case, the STB is only giving you one frequency, and just changing the analog data that goes out of it. (This reminds me of having a converter for the non-cable ready TVs back when I was growing up). In summary, get the IRBlaster working, because it's the only way that you will be able to change channels. You'll probably want to set the option on a per tuner basis (in the setup program, if I recall correctly) to have each tuner default to channel 3. From there, the script that you use to change the channel via the IRBlaster should be called instead of having the PVR-250's tuner listen to a different frequency. -- Joe --- Steve [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I have a strange predicament, or at least I haven't stumbled upon anyone else with it yet. The bottom line is that it is $14 more than the basic cable that I was getting. [mythtv-users] DVB in SVN (7416): One channel has very poor audio
I recieve about 8-10 channels over the air, using DVB. I find that one channel (FOX) has extremely poor audio, it's very scratchy and garbled... I can make out mostly what they are saying but it sounds like someone constantly talking through one of those tracheotomy cazoos. There are two audio channels and the other always sounds perfect. Switching audio channels back and forth doesn't do anything, pausing for a little while doesn't do anything. The weird thing is if I enter LiveTV with the tuner pretuned to FOX the audio is fine; it's only bad when I change channels to FOX. Any ideas? [mythtv-users] OT: upgrading kernel problems / atrpms fedora mirror repo problems?
I have gotten myself into a weird situation. I had a working FC4 / myth 18.1 box, but for some reason it somehow got messed up and would not boot. I have since just formatted the drives (after slapping the drives into a different machine and backing up some stuff) and did a fresh install. However, now I have the following situation. I'm following Jarod's guide. I did the install from the dvd. After the initial boot, I end up in the following problem. Kernel 2.6.11-1.1369 boots my machine no problem. Unfortunately, that kernel is too old to get the ivtv modules. When I upgraded my kernel (to 2.6.13-1.1526) my machine gets to the ui screen where all the services start up, but then goes completely black instead of bring up the login screen. The LED on the monitor goes orange (indicating there is no video signal) and i can't seem to do anything. I can ssh into the machine, but can't find anything obvious as to what went wrong. Now, I was pretty sure that I had a 2.6.12 kernel installed on this box before the big format, so I tried to install one of the two 2.6.12 kernels available, but for some reason, I can't seem to get yum to install it. Doing a yum list available does not list any 2.6.12 kernels, but I can see them if I point my browser to the correct url. Now, even weirder is I just carried on with the guide (knowing full well there was going to be stuff I couldn't install), I installed the ivtv package. This in turn installed the ivtv- kmdl-2.6.12-1.1456_FC4 module and thus in turn installed the corresponding kernel. Why it found it this way, but not when I specifically asked it to I'm still confused on. However, this kernel has the same problem as the 2.6.13 kernel (Blank screen instead of login screen) So, all this being said. 1. Anyone know what is going on with my machine and the latest kernels? What should i check / look at? 2. Anyone know why i can't install the older kernels? I'm assuming yum install kernel-2.6.12-1.1447_FC4 should work? I get a nothing to do message. 3. Anyone got any other ideas as to what i can do I'm probably not comfortable with compiling my own kernel / modules. [mythtv-users] Firewire and DCT-6200
Is anyone seriously using firewire input with a dct-6200 receiver reliably? I just got mine working a few days ago and when it's working, it's great. However, more often than not, recordings come up short or the channel doesn't change. It hasn't made it through an hour long recording yet without the backend saying: Firewire: No Input in 15 seconds [P:0 N:1] (select) Then the recording stops. If anyone has any experience with this, I'd appreciate a pointer to the component that may be giving me problems. Is it the receiver, mythtv, linux, or my cheap firewire card? An exhaustive net search brought back similar problems and suggested using broadcast instead of point-to-point, which I did. No improvement.
