[mythtv-users] Buffer underrun/audio stuttering
I've tried to avoid emailing the list until I was absolutely sure I couldn't get any further without help.I'm trying to get a Mythtv frontend/backend server up and running on a P4 2.8 GHz box with 1 GB RAM and Nvidia Geforce 6800. HDTV over firewire is what I'm having trouble with. I can now reliably connect to the cable box and get HDTV streams using test-mpeg2 and in Mythtv itself, however I've been completely unsuccessful at solving my audio stuttering problem. I've tried every combination of settings and every little suggestion I could find on the internet and this list yet I still get the following errors: 2005-11-24 04:33:52.663 audio waiting for buffer to fill: have 2048 want 4096or2005-11-24 04:33:54.567 WriteAudio: Preparing 4096 bytes (1024 frames)2005-11-24 04:33:54.568 WriteAudio: buffer underrun Things I've tried but none have gotten rid of the stuttering:ALSA, OSS emulation through ALSA, an asoundrc is present, Xvmc on/off, deinterlacing (bob) on/off, extra sound card buffering on/off (the TV settings option), agressive buffering on/off (in General settings), priority process on/off, etc, you name, I've tried it. The problem exists in both the current release of mythtv and svn from two days ago. I'm running Gentoo. Does anyone have any suggestions? My configure setting:./configure --disable-distcc --prefix=/usr --mandir=/usr/share/man --disable-altivec --disable-xvmc-vld --disable-directfb --disable-audio-oss --disable-directx --enable-firewire --disable-audio-jack --disable-joystick-menu --enable-lirc --enable-xvmc --enable-opengl-vsync --enable-xv --enable-x11 --enable-proc-opt --disable-dbox2 --disable-ivtv Also of note, I'm using a PCI firewire card that has a VIA chipset. Some have said there are issues with these, but I dont think its the source of my problems since I'm able to grab streams fine using test-mpeg2 and they playback perfectly in mplayer using xvmc. My motherboard is a SiS chipset. Any help would be awesome, I'm about at my wits end and starting to look at other platforms, but really would like to stick with myth if possible. Thanks. ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users

But in mythtv-setup, you evidently configured that read-only directory as the location for Myth to put new reecordings, that is why it is trying to make sure it can write there. If you want Myth to wirte to one of those other filesystems, you need to specify a directory on one of those filesystems when you run mythtv-setup. I think you want MythVideo to use this read-only filesystem (configured via the MythVideo settings page in mythfrontend) and you want mythbackend (MythTV) to use one of the read-writw filesystems (configured via mythtv-setup). -- Chris ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users

So it makes sense to me to have it mounted read-only Anyway, it would be nice if it could be done. the backend has other filesystems available to it with write access. --Yan ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users
Re: [mythtv-users] I can't tune pvr-150 using mythtv, ivtv-tune works
Have a look at the frequencies.c file here : http://dev.gentoo.org/~cardoe/mythtv/doc/frequencies_8c-source.html - now you might have a problem because 715.75 MHz doesn't seem to be a standard frequency matched by an corresponding freqid ? Your freqid's of '5' and '7' do not really seem to get you into the UHF band as you would probably like to be. Search for "CHANLIST europe_west[]", I guess this is where you are located. As for your odd (?) frequency you might be on your own. As a sidenote I -think- it should be possible to enter the frequencies directly rather than using the freqid's as normally done. Unfortunately I haven't tried to do that. Hope that might be usefull. ~Claus On Thu, 24 Nov 2005 20:51:33 +0100, Ronald Wielink <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: Hi there! [mythtv-users] timezone problem with dvb and two satellites
Hello, I'm in the process of setting up my mythtv stuff. I have one satellite dish with two heads (Astra 19 and Astra 28) connected via Diseqc 1.1. Works really good, ie. I can switch from a channel on input 0 to a channel on input 1 without a hitch. Astra 19 is for German TV, and Astra 28 for UK TV. Now, the problem is Germany is UTC+0100, and the UK is UTC. The backend's time is sh-3.00$ date Thu Nov 24 22:46:33 CET 2005 sh-3.00$ date -u Thu Nov 24 21:46:42 UTC 2005 but all guide data is off set by one hour backward in time as if CET were UTC. ntp is installed, and ntpdate ran. I'm retrieving the EPG using tv_grab_dvb which is fed directly into mythfilldatabase. The downloaded guide data is already wrong: Tracks The programme should start at 23:05 and finish at 00:00. I have played around with the time offset for XMLTV listings in mythtv-setup, but Auto, +0100, or None don't change anything. I have reloaded the guide data after making these modifications, and restarted the mythtv backend. Essentially, at the moment I can't record a programme. Re: [mythtv-users] RE: Problems with DVD rip
If your DVD-ROM drive in your PC has the DVD logo on it then I imagine you are using an official licensed DVD player and the manufacturer should have paid the approriate royalties to the DVD licensing group. The software you use to decrypt and play it is a different story altogether i.e. legal vs. illegal use of deCSS etc. There is also a very very big difference between ripping DVD's to put in your own Myth library and ripping to share with everyone else. My advice is not to be shy and aggresively rip all your DVD's and get them into your Myth library as it totally changes the whole experience. But never share them and make sure the computer where you host your ripped mpgs are totally cut off from the net i..e show intent that you are doing it for the right reasons. If you remember that you own the physical media but not the content and to always look out for the interests of the copyright holder then you pretty much can't go wrong. Thats my 2 cents worth anyway. Horray for mplayer/mencoder/vobcopy/decss/mythtv and all the other fantastic tools that have totally changed the way my children view all their DVD's "on-demand" in any room of the house. [mythtv-users] Install Question from SVN
Just a couple of quick questions I think I now the answers to but want to ask to be sure. Can I move or delete the "Myth" directory that I downloaded SVN to after installing Myth (mythtv-setup)? or does it matter from what directory I use to run setup from? In the setup script for Myth will it create the directory '/src/share/doc/mythtv-0.18.1/database/mc.sql' assuming I'm using 18.1? is that where the DB resides as default? Re: [mythtv-users] Audio "drum-beat" problem
This occasionally happens with PVR350 playback (TV Output), when pressing and releasing skip repeatedly, so that it wants to play and needs to skip at the same time. Bob wrote: Steve Adeff wrote: My goal *IS* to skip the analog step. Right now, to capture from a cable box (since my firewire output is limited by 5C, g...) ... I'd love to be able to capture the video via DVI to a dedicated mpeg encoder so I could do HDTV, but I'll wait for the hardware to be available for that (or 5C gets cracked), I hadn't realised that DRM was quite such a "clear and present danger" as you 'merkins would say, someone in a non DMCA'd country needs to look for a way round this DTCP stuff. The problem with cracking 5C (and it's technologies, like HDCP) is that 5C provides a means by which "substantially compromised" protection schemes can be revoked. So, if someone were able to crack HDCP (i.e. create a computer program to masquerade as a 5C-compliant device and then decrypt the HDCP output from a 5C-compliant receiver), and the 5C's decided to revoke HDCP as a valid protection scheme, all new 5C-compliant hardware would see HDCP as insecure. So, once HDCP is revoked, all new hardware would down-res video to 480p when connected to any other piece of hardware that supports 5C protection using HDCP. So, once HDCP is cracked, if you decided to use that crack, you would not be able to buy any new components for your system (because they see your HDCP system as insecure) until something else gets cracked, at which point you could switch to using the next cracked technology (but, no more HDCP because the new component that supports the next cracked technology sees HDCP as insecure). This "technology freeze" may not seem like such a big deal to you (how often am I going to upgrade my $4000 TV), but--especially when dealing with things like cable-company-owned STB's, you may not have a choice whether to upgrade (i.e. they switch from MPEG-2 to MPEG-4 AVC (H.264), so you have to upgrade). I'm hoping that once the general public (who aren't using cracks) get burned once or twice having to replace equipment to protect the media corporations' interests, the "learning-the-hard-way" will cause enough of a public outcry to sway the politicians' blind support of the media conglomerates. Now, with just a few techies complaining, the politicians have little incentive to do anything about it (at least until we start Internet voting--then they'll want to sway the votes of the people who crack the voting system so they can get the 2 million votes per techie ;). Should someone mention the a) danger, b) issues, or c) proper approach (including downgrading the DB Schema) of "upgrading" from R5A22 to R5A26? (Option c being the ideal.) Going from anything before R5A22 to R5A26 isn't a problem, but those users who upgraded to R5A22 have a database version (somewhere at or after 1095) greater than that expected by R5A26 (probably 1083) and are likely to have problems with an upgrade to R5A26. OK... for the sake of argument, lets say I wiped my R5A22 install and installed R5A26 from scratch... but then restored the mythconverg database from A22 into my A26 install... Am I screwed? The restore probably won't work right. You'll have to edit the restore script to deal with things like basename and progstart and progend columns in the recorded table (although it's possible MySQL will "do its best with what it's got"). Probably many other similar issues. Then, once you get it working, you'll need to rename any recordings that use the new filename format (i.e. chanid_starttime.{nuv,mpg}) to the old filename format (i.e. chanid_starttime_endtime.nuv). And then you'd have to take care of any other issues that I haven't anticipated... So, in all, it's probably more work than it's worth. It may well be more trouble... but hey that's were I am right now :/ The db version is indeed 1095... but all the old recordings are .NUV files so no renaming needed... MySQL reload seemed to have worked OK... and everything seems to be OK the moment... (aside from my remote but I think that's a Knoppmyth customisation problem...) So I guess I may be OK until it's time to upgrade? OK, let me rephrase my conclusion: "So, in all, it's probably more work than it's worth to 'upgrade' to R5A26 instead of just staying with (or re-installing) R5A22." ;) Mike ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users

RE: [mythtv-users] Re: FC4 and HD-3000 DVB vs.QAM Issue in latest kernel
Sorry for the late reply – I was out kinda late last night. As I mentioned earlier – I went thru the same thing, so I’ll try to answer (which is why I chuckled). I suspect the DVB maintainers (who have been doing a lot of updates to this driver as demand increases) started including more detailed information for the hardware on the card. This was probably done to help debug some obscure bug that effected a single individual/group and it helped the maintainer determine if the hardware on the card was different than what they were running. Some capture card vendors (Hauppauge in particular) are known to change tuners and encoders on a pretty regular basis. I have two PVR 250’s each with a different tuner – although they were bought at the same time. The good news in all this is that the card does continue to work in Myth, and works quite well. I am glad I could provide a chuckle ?!?. Anyway, the first time I installed FC4 it always referred to it as a HD3000 when it loaded the frontend even with the latest kernel. Any reason why that might have changed? Should I just go ahead and proceed with Myth like usual? I am just trying to understand what would have changed in the kernel from a month ago that now it is being referred to differently... Anyway, here is my hardware (however I think it is a software issue): AMD64 3200+ (Dual Core) 2 Gig Ram MSI K8N Neo4 Mobo Nvidia 6600 256Meg HD-3000 (for OTA HD) 1 Terabyte of HD Space I had this hardware up and running with Myth for the past week or two just tinkering to learn/play and it was working pretty well. Because I did so much "playing" with it, along with getting a DCT-6208 yesterday I wanted to add (I know you don't have to wipe clean to add a source), plus I just wanted more experience with Linux and Myth. I reinstalled FD4 this afternoon from scratch. I followed Jarod's guide the first time and it went pretty smooth. The HD-3000 was recognized and worked pretty much as close to "out of the box" as you can get. Now I am having an issue with FC4 and the latest kernel. I use the DVD ISO to install FC4 x86 choosing the packages that Jarod lists. This installs kernel 2.6.11-1.1369smp. When I finish the initial boot setup (enabling NTP and setting up a user, etc) I log into X and look at the dmesg. (ie. NOTHING has been done to configure/customize anything) Here is what it says: ** cx2388x dvb driver version 0.0.4 loaded cx88[0]: subsystem: 7063:3000, board: pcHDTV HD3000 HDTV [card=22,autodetected] ACPI: PCI Interrupt Link [APC2] enabled at IRQ 17 ACPI: PCI Interrupt :01: 07.2[A] -> Link [APC2] -> GSI 17 (level, low) -> IRQ 233 cx88[0]/2: found at :01:07.2, rev: 5, irq: 233, latency: 32, mmio: 0xfc00 cx88[0]/2: cx2388x based dvb card DVB: registering new adapter (cx88[0]). Run these commands to start the automount service and make sure it starts at boot: # /sbin/chkconfig autofs on # /sbin/service autofs start 6. Use MythVideo in Listings mode, so that everytime you look for a video, it rescans the directory. If you have a disc in the drive, then DISC will show up as a folder. If you don't have a disc in, then the DISC folder will not be there. Also if you wait for 60 seconds, the drive unmounts (after exiting MythVideo) and you can eject the disc by using the button on the drive. I couldn't get the unmount to work for values less than 60 seconds. Here's an alternative. 1) Burn your recording to disk. 2) Create a link to the burned file on the media in your videos dir - eg $ ln -s /media/cdrom/Bladerunner.avi Bladerunner.avi 3) The file will show up in the video listings and play when you choose to play it - just make sure you inserted the disk first, that's all! What if you had two user accounts: "stable" and "svn" and their $PATH pointed to /usr/local/mythSTABLE/bin (mythSVN respectively) directly? That would save you the ldconfig, I guess. But then, I'd have to make sure that the gdm startup and backend startup stuff was using the same PATH, for me it was easier to build 0.18.1 and latest SVN and then, using the symlinks, I was guaranteed that I was using the latest libs. I also had all sorts of problems when the shared loader could see both libraries. Now, I just run a script "mythswitch SVN|STABLE" and all gets reset. Pity I got the 0.18.1 installed to /usr/bin. I cannot unsymlink that path :-) Now I would have to rely on the precedence of /usr/local/bin if PATH=/usr/local/bin:$PATH. However, if myth keeps the same names for all binaries this *could* work. What do you think? Build 0.18 from source and install in /usr/local/mythX - once you have everything working, remove the relevant files from /usr/bin, /usr/lib, etc. - ie, do a manual unistall. You will find these files in /usr/local/mythX/bin, lib. You can rely on PATH precedence for the binaries but not for the shared libs. ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users

Well you could play with the mixer, and make sure that all unused inputs and outputs are muted, particularly the mic input which would the most prone to picking up unwanted signals. In the mixer and in mythtvsetup make sure the recording and playback gains are sensible. eg you're not recording sound at a very low level, and then playing back at a very high gain. Remove any unused external leads that might be plugged into your sound card - they can act as little aerials. Move the sound card to a slot far away from the capture card. I must admit none of the above seem very likely - you may just have faulty hardware. Just a quick update, I changed the test strategy that I got from http://www.ethics-gradient.net/myth/mythdvb.html from; /usr/src/linuxtv-tools/linuxtv-dvb-apps-1.1.0/util/szap/tzap -a 0 "BBC TWO" /usr/src/dvbstream/dvbstream-0.5/dvbstream -c 0 -ps -qam 16 -cr 3_4 600 601 | mplayer - to ... /usr/src/dvbstream/dvbstream-0.5/dvbstream -c 0 -o -ps -qam 16 -cr 3_4 600 601 | mplayer - So, ensuring I have the "-o" in there and it all works! Great! I use the passthrough on the cards and it seems ok. I got to test for the first time within Myth and that works (basically), very slow to do anything (which is odd because when I have 2xPVR-250s in the same box it was fine, but more tweaks to ensue). Very impressed that this all worked straight out the box with stock kernels! Thanks for the suggestions guys. RE: [mythtv-users] stable and bleeding edge together peacefully?
I just got the 0.18.1 working (from .deb) on a fresh debian sid install (after giving up on KnoppMyth R22) and I am wondering whether it is possible to compile and install the SVN head so it would be able to coexist on the same setup where I got the 0.18.1 stable working? Note that puting SVN to /usr/local (while the stable lays in /usr) and renaming the database (I don't mind keeping two databases) might not be enough so I decided to ask if someone runs such setup successfully. I have both on my system - 0.18.1 for the g/f (stable, no change to behaviour) and latest SVN for when she's out and I can try out the bleeding edge. I installed one to prefix=/usr/local/mythSVN and the other to prefix=/usr/local/mythSTABLE. I then have a script that removes and recreates symlinks to /usr/local/myth as required - this way I don't have to change the PATH for the mythytv user. I do have to re-run ldconfig after the symlinks are set up to make sure the libraries are referenced OK. Yes, two databases are required. What would I need to edit manually? ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users

Re: [mythtv-users] FC4 and HD-3000 DVB vs.QAM Issue in latest kernel

As long as myth is picking it up as a DVB device, and you actually get a picture when all is said and done, you can call it a pickle-2.1.3 and it really wouldn't matter. I think the chuckle was more of a "it's kind of funny to see how people interpret things" than a "you're an idiot" thing ;) But who knows... It seems that most people are able to actually get the PVR-150's working well, and I've seen them for ~65 bucks if you aren't pressed for time (ebay, specials, rebates...). But I've just been too cheap also. I've got about 6 of those cards around the house figuring "I can figure out snd-bt87x, only to find out that a handful of cards actually have the chip soldered onto em to use the audio on the card. Maybe I'll take 2 or 3 and throw em up on ebay and take the 'winnings' to buy a 150 or if I'm really rich that day, maybe a 500 ;) Good Luck! Re: [mythtv-users] Userfreindly filenames of .nuv files?
Jules is basically right. The problem is not that the remote filesystem doesn't follow symlinks, it's that NFS allows the symlink to be read as a symlink. Then, the local kernel attempts to follow the symlink and that file location doesn't exist on your local machine. If you make sure that the path to the recordings directory is identical on the local filesystem, it will work. For example, if you have your recordings in "/myth/recordings" on the backend, either mount "/myth" at "/myth" or mount the recordings directory at "/myth/recordings" (depending on how much of the myth tree you want exported). That might be easy enough to do. and that's what I did. Works great. thanks again ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users
Re: [mythtv-users] Userfreindly filenames of .nuv files?
This is as far as I know not true. I have used symlinks over NFS in the past quite extensively. Typically they should be relative. Does this script perhaps use absolute links? Don't know. Is that easy to fix? (Incidentally, programs which don't show symbolic links in their file dialogs are really broken) Agreed. Jules is basically right. The problem is not that the remote filesystem doesn't follow symlinks, it's that NFS allows the symlink to be read as a symlink. Then, the local kernel attempts to follow the symlink and that file location doesn't exist on your local machine. That might be easy enough to do. Another option is to use Samba. With Samba you can a) specify a password (unlike NFS, which simply uses UID--which is easy to fake), hmmm, but security isn't an issue b) potentially get better filesystem performance (although tuning Samba is significantly more difficult than tuning NFS, so often you get worse performance), c) access the linked files (Samba allows you to specify you want it to follow symlinks for you since Windows doesn't support symlinks). Yes it would have to wouldn't it ! Thanks for the ideas guys. ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users
