[mythtv-users] Changing width resolution for PVR-250/350's

Oh duh. Of course; I totally wasn't paying attention to the bitrate
page. Well, we already knew I was an idiot... :)

Does anyone have suggestions for -their- ideas of reasonable bitrates
before I spend a bunch of time experimenting? I have a clean feed,
and I've been reasonably happy with either "TiVo High" quality, or
"VHS EP mode" quality (yes, I know the latter is substantially fuzzier,
and yes, I'm not even talking SVHS :). Approximate figures for either
one would make good starting points for my experimentation. (And if
anyone thinks that some particular width x height should go along with
these bitrates, by all means, share.)

Since there's both a bitrate and a max bitrate (4500 and 6000 in my
current setup, which are the defaults), there are a lot of variables;
are their any I should stay away from? Is it sensible to lower the
bitrate to, say, 3000 or even lower, and does it make sense to leave
the max bitrate high? Is this used only during a scene change or
lots of motion/flow? I'm using a 350 as my TV-out; has anyone noticed
any particular bugs/crashes/artifacts from using other bitrates?

Right.

Basically, if I decide to move these recordings elsewhere and watch
them on a computer, my guess was that the less rescaling has to
happen, the better. Since the input material is all 4:3 SD NTSC,
my guess is that I should specify a ratio of width to height that's
-also- 4:3, meaning that no pixels need rescaling if I were to just
display this stream in mplayer or something. Is this likely to
matter? (That would work out to 640 x 480, of course.)

Thanks!

I do this all the time.
Use Find one daily option. If its not on, it won't be recorded. (DUH).

Works great for daily shows that appear only on week days, even if
it gets shifted around in the daily schedule. Won't record anything
on the week end, unless they happen to slip in a rerun or something.

I think I figured out the problem: it was the nVidia driver. 8178 was the
version I had been running. Falling back to 7676 got XvMC working properly
on most of the streams I've thrown at it so far.

The only sticking point now is the HD feed from the local Fox affiliate.
mplayer claims the streams are encoded at about 38.8 Mbps, which is
impossible (but mplayer plays the streams OK). I'm fairly sure the streams
are actually encoded at a lower bitrate. King of the Hill takes ~3.2 GB,
which is about right for 30 minutes of HD. HD streams from other channels
report more reasonable bitrates; for instance, the most recent Law & Order:
Criminal Intent is reported as being about 15.4 Mbps).

I suspect that's a problem elsewhere, though (maybe even with the
broadcaster), not with the display hardware here.

Thanks David. I'll have a search about in the archives. I've been
reading plenty of stuff on the web and I know a fair bit more about DVB
today than I did yesterday! I had a look at the megalithia site and I
have good line of site to Billsdale (no obstructions) and I'm 21 miles
away. Since I already have a good loft space aerial I'm going to borrow
a friends set top box over the weekend and see what kind of reception I
get from it. If it's not great I'll have to have an outdoor aerial fitted.

With regard to Myth choosing the second tuner, I had assumed that it
would use the first input (my 250) unless there was a conflict and then
try to resolve it using the new input (Nova-T) is this the case ?

channels.conf, it's fairly obvious to determine how the radio channelsshould look. In terms of the DVB card - the settings required are inthe list archives as I'm away from my box at the moment.I think radio channel scanning/support is being mooted for a future

2006-01-18 Thread Chris Hembrow
I set my nova-t as the first input, that way I don't tie up my sky box
by recording a freeview channel, unless i'm recording 2 channels.
There is nothing more annoying than getting halfway through a
recording, only to find that the missus has changed sky channel, or
left it on the sky guide for 20 minutes! (and that is despite having
an LCD on the box which shows if/what it's recording)

The only problem I had was with scanning the channels, cuz I have a
cr4p aerial. I had to manually enter the frequencies in mythtvsetup
and do a search then. But this shouldn't be a problem with a decent
aerial.

How does mythtv select the audio input?
And it looks like there is a difference between selecting audio input on first

The easiest way to see what it does is to try it - fortunately you don't
need an LCD for testing!!

Install lcdproc and set up the ncurses driver. Set the size to what you
would expect to use on a real LCD (mine is 2 lines of 20 for example) and
run up LCDd on a seperate virtual screen before you start up mythfrontend.
In Mythfrontend, go into setup/appearance and select the things you want
to be displayed. I think you have to restart the frontend to it to work...

You'll see displayed (including all the scrolling etc) everything you can
expect to see on a real LCD.

Very handy for debugging this method is, as I found when the display I
bought wouldn't run directly off the 3.3volt printer port on an Epia
SP13000 (even with pullup resistors) such that I had to put in voltage
shifting buffers. When I was at last convinced that the software DID work
I debugged the hardware and sorted it!!

Well "make" is certainly not looking *there*, that's for sure. On my old FC3 system bttv.h is located in /usr/src/linux/drivers/media/video/
Where /usr/src/linux is a link to the proper kernel tree, as your's is.You could simply move the file to that place, but I'm betting that would just cause a different error a little later when it failed to find the next header that it wants.
You could also make a link from the actual location of the "drivers" to the similar position in the actual kernel tree, might work but it's hackneyed. You could also look at the output of "configure" and see where it *thinks* the headers are located, and either point it to the correct place or link that place to the actual location.
Of course, with recent kernel changes, the bttv.h file you have might not be usable or correct for the version of LIRC that you have :-) It appears this is a kernel
2.6.14. Since this is so new, there is no patch for it yet from lirc.org. Maybe I should wait for a patch.
The kernel version per se shouldn't be a problem. I was running 2.6.14 on a Gentoo system that worked just fine with what they were calling lirc version 0.8.0_pre1 (before a HDD crash took the system down that is).
Gentoo has a version " lirc-0.8.0_pre3" that is claimed to have modifications for the 2.6.15 kernel, all I know about it is that it does not appear to work with 2.6.14.
But your header location problems should not be directly related to kernel version, more likely to a squirrely installation of kernel sources, a problem I've had with FC systems in the past.

that article doesn't even touch on why the physics behind bose's engineering
is bad audio science. my uncle, and acoustic physicist that got there
designing and building speakers in high school hates Bose for this. Bose even
advertises its bad science and tries to pass it of as good science. The Wave

knows changes phasing and timing of frequencies with each wall it bounces off
of.

phasing shouldn't matter as long as the grounds are shared and proper sizing,
etc. Ground loops in proper working equipment are formed when the impedence
to ground for the two components are different. Connecting them together then
causes one of the components to enter into the ground return of the other
component. As well, in theory, properly working two prong components should
never cause ground loop problems... in theory...

Re: [mythtv-users] Looking for good specifications for mythTV

2006-01-18 Thread Gavin Haslett
The Epia P is a great board for a Myth-like box... my next frontend will
probably have that (for my bedroom) because a fanless configuration would be
nice.

However, it's not without its flaws. The 600Mhz CPU is barely powerful enough
to run a frontend and backend together... forget trying to use it to transcode.
The core is based on the old Cyrix core, so a lot of the math takes a back seat
to integer performance. Not a big deal with video, but when dealing with
compression/decompression of MPEG-2 or 4 streams this can start to saturate
these 600Mhz CPUs pretty quickly. All Pentium-class CPU's are not made equal...
bear that in mind when shopping for a media-PC.

Oh, and on the 600Mhz, if you're running MythMusic then better not try to run
full-screen visualizations either :)

I would also point out that even with the XvMC support for these boards, don't
try HD content. You need a LOT more muscle than this to pump HD to the screen,
even the 1Ghz version of the board won't handle it.

Be aware of the specs also; I'm not sure if the Epia P does come in a 1.3Ghz
form, I think it tops at 1Ghz as I recall. Either way, as pointed out above
since it's based on the Cyrix core some of the floating point ops are a little
slower than a similarly clocked Intel or AMD. However, the heat and electricity
used are a lot nicer in these cores.

We're still in a phase where embedded systems are a huge compromise... but the
situation's improving dramatically and continues to. Now, if we can only see
some lower prices on the hardware :)

[mythtv-users] Video Stutter Problems

2006-01-18 Thread Thomas W. Shelton

Hello,

I have scoured the
list and the Internet and discovered a lot of good information ... none of which
has corrected my problem.

I'm running

 - Dell
2.4GHz/512M ram
 - pcHDTV 3000
Card
 - nVidia
GeForce FX 5200
 - using NTSC
with cable -- no cable box.
 - Have Video
for Linux card specified -- not the pcHDTV(wanted to get the basics working
first)

using the latest
stable branch from SVN compiled with --enable-Xvmc.  I have "v4l" defined
in my xorg.conf file.  I also have Xvmc defined in the setup.  I
believe I have also turned off all commercial flagging.  (specifics of
which settings to check might help).  The processor also spikes when I run
glxgears ... not sure if that means anything.

When I started the
image quality was terrible.  I have been able to significantly improve the
quality but it still stutters.  I ran "top" and both mythbackend and
mythfrontend are consuming all available resources when watching
TV.

I feel like I'm
making improvements but have run into a wall.

Any
thoughts?

Thanks,

[mythtv-users] XP2100 outperforms my P4-3.2Ghz

I had myth setup on a XP2100 processor system and everything worked quite well.  Now that I have upgraded to a new computer with a P4 3.2Ghz processor, during live TV, mythfrontend actually uses more of my CPU.  Sometimes up to 99%.  When this happens I get a prebuffering pause and the video kind of glitches.  Anybody ever experience something like this?  I have tried changing most of the settings in the setup and didn't see any improvement.  I was thinking about trying another kernel or video card, but the video card doesn't seem to be the problem.

I'd still have the remote check on your cable line done. Use XFS or JFS
if you're going to be storing over 200 GB's in a single directory. Both
of these handle this situation well. XFS for me has shown better
results overall, but some people think JFS is more stable than XFS.
I've been using both for years with no problems, so it's just opinion.
Stay away from ReiserFS though at all costs if you're going to store
more than 200 GB's in a single directory.

Are you running with OpenGL Vsync enabled? Also, what version of the
Nvidia drivers are you using. I myself have found, and have others,
that 7676 seems to work the best of the recent driver releases for XvMC.

Every time a recording, transcode, commercial detection, and so on start
or finish the recordings table is updated. If you use EIT monitoring
with a HD tuner than every time this finishes it can cause the
recording scheduler to be re-run. Adding RAM will not help at all.
This is purely a system and disk IO issue. I have my mysql databases on
a seperate drive than recordings, but I still get IO bound issues once
in a while. The thread for rescheduling does take all the CPU and IO it
can get for those few seconds, and with the mysql and disk writing
threads they don't always work well together. It's a known problem but
only shows up for HD users more so because HD requires such a large
amount of bandwidth and it can't really stand a hickup. Also, the PCI
bus can be occupied and cause data from the card to be lost if the
system IO can't be freed up quick enough to handle the data. HD tuner
cards have a rather small cache on them. If anything occupies the
system IO longer than 500ms then you risk losing data from the HD tuner,
and Myth and the scheduler does this at times.

It's also not just disk access, if you use a remote frontend you'll
notice network traffic (Depending on the motherboards and ethernet
chipset) will also stutter during the time the schedular runs.

The best way to fix this? Keep the drive for the database on a
different disk than one used for recordings. Use XFS or JFS. Make sure
nothing else IO intensive is running when the schedular runs. Intel
based systems have less of a problem than AMD from what I've seen (Intel
systems with hyper threading that is). Reiser is a good choice though
for the filesystem holding the database, since it does a better job with
sub GB size files.

There are problems with OpenGL Vsync on the newer drivers. Try

Don't do this from a terminal, do it from the actual tv screen, or have
the system start up in runlevel 5. Look in /etc/inittab for

If it's not 5, make it 5, and reboot. X should start automatically.

ah. Now I understand what was going on. The Menu key was named
improperly in my lircrc -- lirc sees it as "Menu/i" and it was called
"Menu" (this is on a pvr-350 w/ a black/silver remote). Now that
I'ver enamed it I'm getting the playlist menu when I'm in the "watch
recordings" screen. Thanks everyone! I still don't see a way to move
things around in the playlist etc, but this is already a major improvement.

while we're on the subject of lircrc... I have a couple of questions
about it. I'd really like to map my "play" button to the "play"
function, which is currently mapped to "Ctrl+P" in the mythweb
bindings interface. But I can't seem to figure out how to write
"control-P" properly in the lircrc file. "Ctrl-P", "Ctrl+P", and
"\P", all seem to fail. There are a couple of other control keys in
the standard keybindings; I'd like to be able to map them as well, if
possible.

in addition...

I've had to reboot several times lately (mostly because of a buggy
power cable, I think), so I've noticed something I mightn't otherwise.
When I boot up, I autologin the mythtv user from gdm, which runs a
minimal wm & starts mythfrontend directly. The first time I do
this after booting, mythfrontend doesn't seem to receive any
keypresses from the remote (though I can check with irw that the
remote is in fact sending, and lircd is up and receiving). If I
/etc/init.d/gdm restart
then things seem to work fine again. Anyone know what the deal is
with that? Do I need to modify my init scripts somehow perhaps?

thanks again,

matt

For the backend, dumb question - is dma enabled on the disk(s)?

For the frontend, I had to recompile with processor specific
optimizations before I got reasonable CPU usage.

[mythtv-users] No sound -- does it matter?

2006-01-18 Thread jwg
Hello,

A total newbie question. I'm unable to get my PC sound working. Do I
really care?

I intend to set this box up as a headless MythTV box, i.e. no monitor,
keyboard or mouse,
running Fedora Core 4, with PVR 350, located with our entertainment
stack, and manage it
with a combination of the IR remote control and web interface. It will
drive the family TV through
the PVR 350 outputs.

So do I really care that the PC sound doesn't work? Can't I just ignore
this and forge ahead?

Well, kinda..

If you will *really* only be doing video/audio through the 350, it won't matter.

However, the 350 is only good for MPEG2 and framebuffer. If you wish
to use MythMusic or (IIRC) MPEG4 stuff in MythVideo, those play audio
through the sound system. In fact, to do those reasonably, you need
to loop the 350 audio out back into the soundcard in.

Also, without using the loopback/sound system, Myth cannot control the
volume of the (MPEG2) audio--you'd have to set your remote to control
the TV or amplifier level.

HTH

DS (still trying to get any sound out of his new prototype 350 system).

Is the login screen graphical or text? Your system really does not sound

Even with the offloading that Nvidia drivers do, there is obvisouly some sort
of problem
here. I have a P4 3.0 with an ATI 9600 (AGP) and I don't experience any
prebuffering
pauses or stuttering, and my CPU will hang around 70% during 1080i content.

I also have another frontend with a P4 2.26 and an ATI 9600. This also handles
1080i
pretty well, with only minor stuttering when the video first starts and CPU
about 90%.

The IOBOUND errors I mentioned that are occurring at five-minute
multiples (and one-minute multiples before I changed the "check every
x seconds" setting in the backend from the default) occur independent
of any recording starts or stops. As previously mentioned I have set
commflag jobs to only occur in the early morning, and I never do
transcode.

Sorry, don't know what EIT monitoring is; I use FireWire with my HD
cable boxes.

This both gladdens my wallet while dimming my hopes for
always-pristine (subject to the vagaries of cable provider
compression) HD recordings regardless of circumstance.

Hmm. If it's not a swapping issue, perhaps I should turn the
ringbuffer size on the frontend back up to the maximum? I thought that
only applied to Live TV. Is there a separate ringbuffer setting I am
not aware of in 0.18.1? (Live TV is set to record locally, but I
wonder if maybe it's better to trade network bandwidth for disk IO
bandwidth and set it to go to the same place the recordings go to?)

> The best way to fix this? Keep the drive for the database on a
> different disk than one used for recordings.

Done. I keep the database on a local SATA drive, but the recordings go
to an Infrant 600 2TB over gigabit Ethernet . . .

> Use XFS or JFS.

. . . and which uses ext3, not JFS (as I use pretty much everywhere
else), as its filesystem. (Although the Infrant folks use
straightforward md-compatible RAID on the 600 [and even their
proprietary X-RAID on the X6 is md-readable], I think they've tweaked
with the ext3 filesystem code a bit. When I delete a recording, the
system gives me back control as quickly as when I recorded to my JFS-based
RAID array, but only for a split second; then there is a distinct
'hang' for a few moments as the deletions occur. And yes, this does
cause a few bursts of IOBOUNDs when I am doing HDTV recording at the
time.)

> Make sure nothing else IO intensive is running when the schedular
> runs.

That's easy; the MythTV box doesn't do anything else but MythTV, and
the Infrant is going to be dedicated solely to Myth (at least once
I've moved my remaining non-Myth video collection off it).

Check that; the MythTV box is a 3.0GHz Pentium 4.

Like I said, I am using JFS pretty much everywhere else, and that
includes the MythTV box's local disk.

I wonder if this is a latency issue? Unfortuantely I can't tweak up
the latency on my PCI Express gigabit Ethernet card with setpci; I've
tried.

If your Nvidia had Nvidia's drivers it would have had hard-decode support, if
your ATI card uses the xorg drivers it doesn't have that. I can run 800x600
on a 300MHz machine with the right Nvidia drivers, it fails to play 480x480
with the xorg drivers.

were Render or Composite turned on in your xorg.conf? One of them needs to be
on for Xorg to be able to offload rendering to the card.

[mythtv-users] zap2it lineup configuration for 2 card configuration

2006-01-18 Thread Neil

hey guys,

I got the fusion lite hdtv 5 card delivered. I would like to know how I
would configure the channeling in mythtvsetup. I currently have air2pc and
I'm using it for my OTA. I will be using the fusion card for Comcast cable.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I can qualify that...

if [ $distro=="Fedora Core" && $kernel=="stock" ]
then
echo "You have a 4kstacks-enabled kernel, and using XFS, especially in
conjunction with software RAID and/or LVM, is likely to lead to stack
overflows, which cause your machine to do Bad Things."
elif [ $kernel_stacks != 4k ]
  echo "XFS should be fine"
fi

:)

That said, I like XFS quite a bit myself, and have used it without a problem
on Fedora Core in the past (though I'm just using ext3 right now on my RHEL4
MBE). The other caveat is to have solid backup power, because XFS's
aggressive caching might lead to random data corruption if your machine
suddenly loses power.

since the new card will be using cable instead of OTA you can just log into
your current zap2it account and setup a new lineup using comcast cable, then
in mythtv-setup you'll want to set up two sources, one for the OTA lineup and
one for the Comcast lineup. Your zap2it login information will be the same,
but you'll get two options for the lineup.

You may also find that you get all the OTA channels on the comcast line. Once
you get this going, I'd be interested to know if you find a difference in
Comcast's version of the HD stations as compared to OTA.

[mythtv-users] After "long" livetv pause, then rewind, mythfrontend becomes unstable

2006-01-18 Thread John Biundo
Hi all,

After a "long" pause*, if I attempt to rewind livetv, things become
unstable. Often, mythfrontend becomes unresponsive for a long time
(maybe several minutes), then resumes rewinding or playing.

[*I reproduced the problem this morning by pausing for about 45 minutes;
I'm not sure what the shortest pause that would trigger this is, but
"brief" (say 1 or 2 minutes) pauses don't trigger it]

When this happens, I often see messages in the mythfrontend log like:
"prebuffering pause"
and
"Waited too long for decoder to pause"

Interestingly, once this condition is obtained, I can continue to
fastfoward, pause, and play without problem. Further rewinds cause the
same problem.

By the way, if there are well-known explanations or descriptions for
these mythfrontend messages (prebuffering pause, waited too long...) I
would surely love to hear them! Googling these messages hasn't been
very fruitful so far.

Anybody else seen this, or got any clues?

I'm fairly new to MythTV, but have decent linux skills and am willing to
try to track this problem down if I can get a little guidance on how to
best collect data, generate some hypotheses, and test them.

Thanks in advance for any help. This problem has certainly raised some
"uncomfortableness" in the household, and has people feeling the need to
reach for video tape when something crucial needs to be recorded!

Cheers,
john

/var/log/x(something).log. xorg and XFree have different names, it's
likely xorg.0.log or something to that effect.

All file systems will give you data corruption if your machine
suddenly loses power (with standard PC's). With standard params
ext3 will be a little better because it keeps puts a copy of the
data being written in the journal before it writes it in the correct
location, also as a security matter XFS will zero the bytes in a
partially written blocks on fsck, while ext3 just leaves the corrupted
block in place, which is often useful if the data is a text file.

AFAIK Except for ReiserFS, all other Linux filesystems will only
corrupt files open for writing, so this isn't entirely random...
However, files can include directories...

For the video store, XFS and JFS are really the only reasonable
options. For your main Linux partitions ext3 and ReiserFS can
have some real advantages.

Why are you using a SMP kernel? I've never used a Dual Core processor, but
I'm guessing that even then you'd probably be better off with a standard
(optimized) kernel.

The viedo drivers probably are your first bet though. A word of warning:
the proprietary fxlrx drivers don't work with X.org 6.9, so if you want to
try them, don't upgrade x until ATI bring out the next version.

I disagree. Its hard for me to imagine any realworld situation
where a smp kernel on a hyperthreaded cpu would not perform at least
as well as a non-smp kernel. And if you have a true dual core cpu,
definately use it. HT may only be a very modest improvement, but
I have 2 machines with 2 Xeon HT cpus, and I set them both up for 4
cpu smp support.

[mythtv-users] record a show on channel X or Y

2006-01-18 Thread Daniel Walton
Is it possible to schedule a show to record only on specific channels? That or
say "record on any channel except channel X"?

I have one HDTV OTA tuner card and two PVR-150s. Sometimes there are two HD
shows on at the same time that I want to record so I record one of them in HD
and the other in SD on a PVR-150. In order to make this work I've assigned my
HD card a higher priority and for any HD show I tell it to "record on any
channel". This way the higher priority show records in HD, the lower in SD.

The problem is when there is a third station that airs lots of repeats of a
show. Take CSI for example, new episodes air on CBS via channel 5_1 in HD and
channel 3 in SD but SpikeTV (channel 40) shows lots of older shows that aren't
always flagged as 'Repeat'.

How can I tell Myth to record CSI on channel 5_1 or 3 but not channel 40?

set up as many "record only on this channel" recordings for the two channels

[mythtv-users] Silverstone Lascala 17 Case

2006-01-18 Thread peter
Hi,

I'm thinking of replacing my current FE with an HD-capable FE, and was
thinking of putting it all in Silverstone Lascala 17 case:

Is anyone using one of these? And failing that, any other comments on
good, reasonably-priced cases?

hey guys,

cable.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Neil

since the new card will be using cable instead of OTA you can just log
into your current zap2it account and setup a new lineup using comcast
cable, then in mythtv-setup you'll want to set up two sources, one for
the OTA lineup and one for the Comcast lineup. Your zap2it login
information will be the same, but you'll get two options for the lineup.

You may also find that you get all the OTA channels on the comcast line.
Once you get this going, I'd be interested to know if you find a
difference in Comcast's version of the HD stations as compared to OTA.

me too. I'm in SF Bay area (Los Gatos) and HD OTA seems to be better
than Comcast QAM but I'd like to find out if it's me or them.

record the same thing on both tuners and compare the mpeg streams.

I only have one 250 and one HD.
But, when I went to QAM the results were mixed. OTA was much better,
but I have more time on OTA than QAM.
Just was looking for more benchmarks from others.

I'm pretty sure you can do this with an advanced recording rule with
something like title LIKE "CSI" and channel != 40. Bruce is better with
the syntax of these but I think there are other examples in the archives

Doesn't this apply only to manual recordings? On regular recordings,
Myth has guide data to know whether the same show is broadcast on
weekends/weekdays. So--unless the OP is using manual recordings
(something he should have told us)-- he should just say to record every
day and Myth will know whether the Simpsons are on Saturday and Sunday.

Also, it makes no difference whether you schedule the "in this timeslot
every day" manual recording "on a weekday" or not--it's whether you set
the "Date or day of the week:" to Saturday or Sunday. Therefore, on
Tuesday I can schedule the recording, while setting the day of the week
to Saturday to get 7 day/week manual recordings. (I'm sure this is what
you mean, but it's not what you're saying. :)

As I've recently written here, I saw the exact same stack overflow
errors with Fedora Core 3 and various 2.6.x kernels when using JFS,
not XFS, with LVM2 and software RAID. Recompiling the kernel to turn
off 4k stacks (and thus go back to the old 8k behavior) indeed fixed
this issue. Those interested should see the relevant

Wow, great stuff.  I like the link you included.

To answer the you're whipped... and, you should do what sounds best...

for an improvement not a pinnacle.  This is not the right room in the
house for a home theater.  I have one of those.  I'll be investing in
it later.  I want this space to look great and function for general TV
viewing.  The quality sound for this space will be coming from a baby
grand player piano.  The TV viewing is less of a feature.  My wife is
an excellent decorator and I trust her.

So, with that said, I'm shooting for the $1000 for all 5 and a sub

The issue of not having a back wall (cause it's open to the kitchen)

Don't know why they took a traditional design approach to their in-walls

they still sound absolutely awful.

In-walls can sound fantastic when designed well with quality components.
Look at Sonance, RBH, Polk or Niles just to name a few of the entry
level players. If your budget allows and you want to get very accurate
sound from in-ceiling speakers, look at Triad. Another in-wall/ceiling
which has a very different approach with some amazingly detailed imagery
are Cabasse iO coaxials.

But please, please, please do your Myth system some justice and put
something, ANYTHING, other than Bose in the room.

On a related note, is there a way of grouping channels or relating channels?

e.g. BBC1 on source 1 and 2
C4, E4, E4+1 on source 1, C4 on source 2.
ITV, ITV2 on source 1, ITV on source 2, etc etc.

Thanks

if you can live with regular ol' speakers I'd recommend the Energy Take 5 (or
whatever the new set they replaced the Take 5 with) or Paradigm's Cinema
series. They all consist of small satelite speakers with a subwoofer and
sound excellent. My dad has the Energy Take 5 and I was blown away by how
good it sounds for the price and size. They have great staging and depth,
something I was not expecting from them.

Source as in "video sources" as in channel lineups. Has nothing to do
with capture cards/tuners/inputs. I have one source and 2 capture cards
and set up a box with one source and 4 capture cards. Every one of my

No, try it out. As long as it has enough information to
detect duplicate episodes, it will only record one of them.

I think you may also get away with using one channel record
entry if you give both channels the same "callsign". I've done this
between QTA and QAM channels.

I should note that I've sometimes seen zap2it provide
different episode information between the digital and analog channels
but then correct them as airtime gets closer. Myth will think it has
to record both channels until mythfilldatabase updates the program
database ~1 day before airtime.

I should add, my parents remodel will have a similar layout for their
hometheatre room, 3 walls, no back wall. My mom's plan is to continue to use
the Energy Take 5 (she enjoys the home theatre experience as much as my dad,
it just took the great quality and living room comfort experience in person
to convince her). Using wall mounts for the surrounds, mounting them about
1ft below the ceiling and angling them towards the sitting area. The front
l/r will sit on some very stylish stands that she picked out to match the tv
stand she picked out. She's an Architect/Interior Decorator, so after a
half-hour of explaining room acoustics to her we were able to lay this design
out.

That said, I do love what you've done with the place, the large room is the
same concept my parents are going for, it really opens the place up and gives
the feeling of grandeur. Good luck in convincing the w

I was surprised to see all the anti-Bose venom here. My Bose system
(with the cube speakers) works pretty well for us, that's all I know.
The cube speakers are also very easy to mount and position pretty much
anywhere you need them.

I'm not an audiophile, but I am sound-sensitive and was one of the first
to adopt CR02 cassette tapes (I'm giving away my age here) because I
couldn't stand the hiss on the older-style tapes, and I had to learn to
use "audacity" in order to make listenable OGG files out of some of
those old tapes, so I'm not totally deaf to audio issues.

Also, Consumer Reports rated the Bose system very highly in their tests
of surround sound systems. They do unbiased tests with sound frequency
meters and trained experts as well as ordinary users to evaluate the
sound. I'm not going to try and argue audio science with people who most
likely know a lot more about it than I do. I only know I like my Bose
cube speaker surround sound system.

I know I'm jumping in late, but if I had your situation, I'd love to
have this Klipsch system:

I believe you can hang the speakers on the wall, and they're low
profile, so they blend with the tv. Use the stands for the speakers
that have to go where there's no walls.

I did too, but I lowered my DPI to 75 from 100 and now it works on all
3 digit dates (1/11 but not 11/11 for example). I blamed my own setup
as I've been tweaking my font recently and probably dorked something,
but since you mentioned it, I figure I should say "me too".

Otherwise, I really like this theme! It looks great on my TV with my
setup. And I use XvMC so I get the gray OSD too which matches
perfectly with this theme :D

Please don't suggest using the wrong DPI. Displays for mythfrontend
should be set to 100 DPI. Changing the DPI only changes the problems
(probably to ones you feel are less intrusive) but does not fix them.

It shouldn't be too hard - I think I'll just have to add an extra bit of

You've got 20 more pixels to play with in the date field...

Download the new ui.xml from here: http://www.juski.co.uk/pg-wide/ui.xml

If you still have issues, tell me what screen res & font size you're

it to be okay).

Because if I'm putting in or taking out a disk I have to go up to the
machine anyway, so I prefer pressing a physical button. But I don't use
it much - I play dvd's on my normal dvd player. The only thing I was
planning on using it for was to burn dvd's, but I find that easier to do

I don't know how the noise is on the fans (I take the
spec sheet with a grain of salt), but at least there
are plentiful options for changing out the fans on
that case, as they are 80mm fans.

I have the LC03 case which has 60mm fans on the back,
and while I've undervolted them, they're still the
noisiest part of the case (except when the hard drive
seeks/writes). Unfortunately, it's hard to find quite
60mm fans.

Conventional Wisdom Watch (with apologies to Newsweek)

Rebuild kernel <>Good: Old 8K stack option restores stability to
  multiple filesystem layers. Bad: You'd
better know how to manually roll your own
kernel or at the least edit and rebuild
  source RPMs.
ReiserFSV Many people swear by it, but many others
swear at it, especially when dealing with
gigabyte-sized files of the kind MythTV
  produces. Why take the chance?
XFS ^ Balanced read/write performance. But
is it true that the kernel maintainers
  dislike it?
JFS ^ Back by full faith and credit of one of the
largest IT companies on Earth. Writes not quite
  as good as reads, though.
Ext3<>Reliable, rock-solid, battle-proven, and no
hours-lonk fsck. But slow, slow, slow, slow.
LVM2^ Flexibility makes extending or modifying
