Re: [mythtv-users] Help Developing MythWeb
I'd suggest that it's better to go thin-client and not have to assume that the users have any plugins. Same goes for java. Once you go that way, it's a whole new can of worms... Re: [mythtv-users] Performance from a different perspective
Hmm, I'm running on an old FIC-SD11 Mainboard with a Slot-A Athlon 950. I've got 384 Megs of RAM in it. As for encoders/decoders, I'm running a 350 and using the hardware output. I also have a 500 and all three tuners are working well, now that I got IVTV 0.4.2 installed (I had the new samsung encoders) Occasionally, the front end stutters a bit, but overall it's doing really well. I'll be upgrading the RAM soon (The main board can only handle 768MB) and I'll see if that improves it. I've got the system and an archive partition on a 60GB drive and a 300GB drive for storing recordings. The only slowdown is when the hard drive swings around a bit. I figure the system swapping is what's causing the stutter, so the mem upgrade should really help... You don't need much hardware for this stuff. [mythtv-users] Bug in 4.2?
I have the new Hauppauge 500 with the Samsung chips. According to the trac this chip was added in as tuner #68 in tuner.h. http://ivtvdriver.org/trac/ticket/63 http://ivtvdriver.org/trac/changeset/3120 However, when I installed Axel's RPM for 4.2 and the requisite bits, I see the following, and my tuner doesn't work. Seems weird that if it is a signal quality issue, it would only affect one tuner on the same card and not the other though... Both of the other tuners are crystal clear up to Channel 99. You can go to Search Words->People and enter "Clint Eastwood" to search the name in people and find the credited programs. However, it does use LIKE so you can enter "%Eastwood" or "Qu%n Tar%tino" if you were unsure of a spelling but exact names are more efficient.] If you see a list of spaghetti westerns, press "M" to bring up the popup, Tab or "M" again to focus on the buttons and click "Record". Search rules put the key info for the WHERE clause in the record.description fields. The record.subtitle field can also hold a string to go into the FROM clause. This is precisely for People Search rules and is the only thing that currently uses this. However, it might be useful to join other table like oldprogram to determine if a title has been in the listings before like the "New Titles" list. kPowerSearch rules do support a fromclause string in the subtitle but the Custom Record page doesn't support this because it it too obscure and too complex for a simple interface. The Custom Record page and the proglist pages are not prepared to handle fromclauses and would choke badly on power search rules that had them. This should be fixed but has never come up. If you decide to do something with fromclauses, please send a patch for Custom Record to handle them. -- bjm ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users

[mythtv-users] Media Center extender?
Hey y'all.. Just a quick question about portability.. Anybody played with the Linksys Media Center Extender? It's a wi-fi box, sporting digital and analog audio, component/svideo/composite outputs, and would probably make a good frontend for the $300 they're asking, but my question is whether or not anyone has any experience with the device, or if anyone's found a way to port mythfrontend to this thing ala the Hauppauge MediaMVP (which sucks). So my specific question: Is it locked in to one specific app? Re: [mythtv-users] IMDB Screen Scrap... legal?
My concern is not whether or not the user has another computer.. it's the break-up of the work.. You watch a show, then have to walk to your computer in your (office, kitchen, bedroom, livingroom, etc) and type in a review. I just don't think it'll happen. Granted, there are a select number of users who are really quite interested in writing reviews (hence why Amazon's reviews are thriving), but if I were to pick a number, say 5%, of myth users who were contributing, we'd still end up with a fairly paltry sample of data. Speaking of which, we could just use the product reviews from amazon's feed.. not great for brand new tv shows that aren't on DVD, but for those that are, or for movies, etc, it would work perfectly. And for those who actually _did_ want to write reviews, why not forward them to amazon's review system, and reciprocate that way? -=A Michael Carland wrote: > > On Jul 8, 2005, at 4:36 PM, Aaron Stewart wrote: > >> Getting back to my original point.. The problem is that I have another tuner card in the system that didn't have any recordings scheduled for. My question is: Can mythbackend dynamically reschedule to use the other card for that program, rather than interrupting? Has anyone else run into this? -=Aaron ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users

Silly question, but would it be better to determine whether mythfrontend is running before running a second one? e.g. MYTHFRONTEXEC="mythfrontend" MYTHRUNNING=`ps ax | grep '$MYTHFRONTEXEC'` if [ "x$MYTHRUNNING" == "x" ]; then nvidia-settings -l mythfrontend fi Allan Risk wrote: >> >> I am checking for the $DISPLAY variable in my start script like this: >> >> if [ $DISPLAY == ":0" ] ; then >> nvidia-settings -l >> mythfrontend >> fi >> >> If your $DISPLAY is ":0.0" for a local session, then you have to >> modify the script. >> >> Thomas > > > I tried this and found that after KDE is up $DISPLAY is :0.0, but when > the script is run it is :0. > Your script will then work, unmodified, the first time it is run. > I don't know if this ever happens, but if the script has to be run > again (or maybe it could be used in the power button script?), the > check would fail. > > I tried to come up with something that covers that scenario and it > seems to work. > I'm a complete novice to writing shell scripts, so if anyone has > suggestions or improvements I'd love to hear them. > > I'll look into the X options others suggested. Re: [mythtv-users] MobileMyth?
Easier to do a detect on network connection, check the essid of the wiFI point, and hit the server if it's considered "local". Rsync works well, I agree. Though the idea of having a service "listening" for the car didn't occur to me, I'd probably have the car pc handle the connectivity, rather than having the home server trying to connect to anything and everything in its sights :). I kicked this idea around for a while (I think my post on it is in the archives somewhere) but didn't get terribly far with it (was just working on building out hardware). Though my idea had to do with syncing using WiFI to a master server while the car is parked, rather than physically attached storage. Not necessarily so.. Depending on reception quality (I know that my channel 3 comes in worse than most), there may be more or less latency in blank frame detection. Ditto to positions that are set by user when flagging. Goes with the territory.. Corporations have been fighting technology since the dawn of time.. Ref: Audio Cassettes, Video Cassettes, CDs, DVDs, MP3, and now digital video. I can't think of any circumstance where they've won. You can't fight the progress of technology. You can try, but you'll lose. There will always be workarounds. And subsequently by location/listing area? That would mean that somebody in my immediate metro area, subscribing to my same service, recording the same show(s) as I did, would have had to flag the commercials already for me to take advantage of it. Again, possible, but it strikes me as a science project. Re: [mythtv-users] Broadcast Flag Article mentions MythTV and quotes Issac
Close, but not quite.. IIRC, the law still prohibits "group" viewing, which is a gathering of over 12 people.. That law applies to commercially available DVDs, VHS, as well as recordings of shows. It also seems to me that the new law would only prohibit *selling* of devices that don't obey the new flag.. Meaning, you could build your own device, just not market it. And I'd imagine that at some point we'll see some kind of inline device that would attach to your cable before your tv/tv card/box that strips out the broadcast flag, but maybe that's just wishful thinking. I'd also like to note that while the article in the SF Guardian has some merit, the EFF tends to go off the deepend a bit.. They have a great cause, and I applaud them for upholding it, but they go overboard far too often, which lends them less credibility in political circles than is their due. -=Aaron On Thu, 3 Mar 2005, Allan Stirling wrote: > Matt Grommes wrote: > > Yes, thank you. Re: [mythtv-users] Re: Torrentocracy Patch against Mythtv-cvs
Problem is that one must assume that: a.) every instance of the show puts the commercials in the same place b.) the same show airing on different channels have the commercials in the same place (SkyONE has radically different commercial placement than, say, the sciFI channel). c.) the commercials are the same length (could be gotten around by looking at content on either side of commercials). I'm guessin' that, while the idea is a great one, it's a wash. But hopefully there's someone out there who's smarter than I am that can figure out how to do it.
