2024-01-01 Thread Dieter Waechter

Hi,
The fractions tube is the ZM1237. Displays 1/2, 3/4, 5/8, 1/4, 7/8.
I have these NOS on stock if someone needs them.
The others are ZM1232 or ZM1235.
I have these NIB on stock and looking for someone who can create an
upside-down nixie clock (kit) with the ZM1232. I have tubes for 180 clocks.

So if any of you have time and feel like it, please feel free to contact me.

Re: [neonixie-l] Little tube mystery

2021-10-08 Thread Dieter Waechter

Hi!

LD-955A is the same as CD89P (100% match). High brightness. Designed for
multiplexing, M7S-1 base (12 long wires) - both by NEC. Only these two
in this substitute group - no other matches.

CD71 is part of a larger substitute group (group #0030 for my notes
here) - this is:

CD71
CD71LA
CD78
CD78/GR-115
CD78s
CD79
GR-115
ZM1325

But none of these all are "mystery" tubes - all well known. ;)

Best regards
Dieter

that is clearly marked CD71 with the Hitachi logo. It is fatter
though, and has a very open anode mesh, at 12.5mm dia, whereas the
mystery tubes are only 9.4mm dia.

5 of 7  mystery tubes work fine. Of the other 2 0,ne has a broken
anode lead, and the other appears to be dead. The leads on them
are quite oxidised and are a bit brittle.

I will never do anything with them, so if anybody - prefaraby UK -

Hello Markus,
Yes, I have some of the LL-55x in my collection.
Your "POST" display is cool! I like it.

The LL-55* tubes are great: very nice and reliable. And most of the

For about 3 years now I am using those tubes for a „POST“-sign to
display the state of my postbox inside the house. It lights up when new
components from china etc. have arrived. So I always know when it is
time to check the mailbox. I am very happy with this nixie project, but
did not have time yet to document it...

Re: [neonixie-l] Re: Information about very odd ZM an Z Nixie Tubes and Dekatrons

2020-01-21 Thread Dieter Waechter
Thank you Martin,
This is the special list of the "Z" section where I only have the type numbers
and no other data.
I have not explored all data books and data sheets in my archive. So it might
be, that I have some data but die not find them, yet.
Of course some are very easy to "guess" - like ZM1010R is the red filter
version of the ZM1010, or Z5720M is the clear version of the Z572M.
Oh, this is a good example that the Z5720M exists, since I got the Z572M
already.
So to answer your question: The type numbers are all I have up to now.
Best regards
Dieter

Sources are mixed, collected over years...

also had B5441A tubes in it, I assume it is electrically identical.

Hi!
Only thing known is that it is the same as Hewlett-Packard's 1970-0046.
Ther is no other 100% substitude since the comma shaped right hand dot.
It is a longlife type - rated life: 200k hrs. Ic is 2.3 mA nominal. (2-3.5 mA).
Best matching datasheet is Burroughs_Bulletin_1104D.pdf (youll find at my page)
See B-5441A there. Only difference is the shape of the RH DP.

Yeah, right call to scrap it.

How long are your VFD tubes lasting ?
Do you keep the filaments always-on ?
Are the phosphors always-active, or do you shut-down during certain hours, or
use a PIR sensor ?

I'm planning to make a night-clock which slowly turns-on the filament supply
after the PIR sensor detects motion and time-of-day is night-time, then keeps
the filaments on for the rest of the night, then shuts them off.
Segments (phosphors) will glow for a few minutes after each PIR activation,
then shut off. That will greatly increase their life.
These tubes have a rather low filament current, 35-40mA, and it's very hard
to see them glow even with clear glass (DT1704), so they dont run nearly as hot
as other filaments hence should last a long time.

Hi,
Except for some special ones I always recommend these:
http://www.nocrotec.com/shop/product_info.php/language/en/info/p39_14-Nixie-Roehren-Fassungsbuchsen---vollvergoldet-.html
Especially for chinese tubes and for Russian tube (except IN-18) these or
equual should be used, but also National Electronics an Burroughs with
larger bases showed high divergence from the ideal pinout in many cases.

Just finished testing a six-digit NL8091 clock (ESP32) PCB I designed and

trading one for the PCB shown, fully assembled ($250.00 value in board
manufacturing costs + parts)? I am also willing to sell the shown board for
$250.00 + shipping costs, but I only have four remaining, and folks trading
tubes have priority. Note: this boards uses shift registers - see schematic

This looks like one of the "more" advanced prototypes, i've sa a similar
russian one that looked more experimental, having a very thick and messy grid
tpye and alot of parts that were made with the pink cement material you and the
pins looked more bulk. Saw that one on ebay a few years ago for like 500$,
someone has made a pretty good deal on this acution now.

Also nice to see that its running

Re: [neonixie-l] Russian Pandicon prototype

2019-12-08 Thread Dieter Waechter
Hi,
No. The diamond logo is typically the old Фотон logo.
So "Foton" should be the maker.
Фотон did write the tube type inside the diamond.
So the tube type should be something like В.100.П --> that's V.100.P
The hand written "43Г" (43G) is not the type by the way, but some kind of a lot
code.

headaches, hassels, and bad customer feelings/relations to just have the darn

the customer has NO knowledge of electronics and it was known at the time!! My

I have been a tech going on 60 years now, but am NOT familiar with this
clock. I am willing to help as much as I can from here. OBVIOUSLY there is an
explanation, and reason for this happening. You just have not unraveled it as
yet. To begin with I must ask you a number of questions. Do you have, or have
access to a DVM? How many digits are displayed for the TIME? How many for the
DATE? How many in 'service mode'? My initial thoughts (GUESS) are this. The
H.V. power supply MAY be becoming MARGINAL. Delivers enough voltage to light
the colons in service mode and for the date, but for some reason not the time.
What I'd like for you to do if possible is monitor the voltage to the colons,
while switching the mode from time, to date, to service mode. Record the
readings vs mode, and lets see if that tells us anything. You will be measuring
H.V. so be very careful. If you do not feel comfortable doing this, have
someone versed in H.V. measurement help you. Ira.

Approximately, 4 years ago I ordered and built the Nocrotec IN-18 Blue

neons (wired in series) in the colon towers were intermittently lighting when
displaying the TIME only. All other functions such as displaying date, and in
Service Mode the lower NE-2's work just fine. Additionally, I checked wiring
and all connections etc. and everything is OK.

So I reached out to Dieter no less than 4 times asking for advice and
got NO RESPONSE. It wasn't until I emailed Claus Urbach, (the site that sells
the IN-18 Blue Dream Kit) that I got a lukewarm excuse filled reply which was
to replace the colon towers. If the NE-2's were bad, why do they work in
Service Mode and when displaying date?

I continued to reach out to Dieter for help, and was ignored. Dieter
keeps using the excuse (thru Claus Urbach) there's something wrong with my
email (trust me there's not) and pushes the blame on me.

So here I am, a clock with issues, and no support. Claus has been
great, but told me there's nothing more he can do. I noticed Dieter has pulled
the links on his site and Claus doesn't have the kit listed anymore so who
knows what the situation is?

For those of you who were considering purchasing the IN-18 Blue Dream I
would highly advise you don't due to poor customer service. It's a shame,
because it's a really nice clock.

It is possible that the neons DO need to be replaced, as they themselves
may be marginal, and therefore need to be replaced. I've had to replace a lot
of neons and nixies in my time due to a number of issues, including being
marginal on firing voltage. Either option is easy and inexpensive. Ira.

Ira.

Re: [neonixie-l] Re: Rant: Shipping to Germany

2015-11-29 Thread Dieter Waechter

Hi!
I receive hundreds of packages from USA a year and nearly never had a
problem with the customs or transit time.
The packages hang at the airport in USA from time to time because of the
security checks (elecronics seem to look like a bomb sometime).
But it is impossible that they hang in the German customs since German
receivers MUST collect tehm within 10 days.

So anything must be wrong in this discussion.
BUT: Shipping to USA from Germany can be a big big problem.
This is a) also because of the security checks at the German airport (only
with packages to the USA) and b) because of the mail in USA from the airoprt
to the receiver can take extremely long. Longer than in most countries.

I've mailed hundreds of Nixie watches all over the world for many years. I
use FedEx. They are expensive, but it seems to just work. Even to Germany.
The only place I have trouble is Russia, but they have begun to refuse any
international shipment to a residential address whatsoever.

The FedEx shipping website creates a commercial invoice that goes outside
the box in a pouch (4 signed copies), using a web form on which I fill out
the customs value info. I tell my customers in advance that I won't lie
about the value on the customs report to save them money. If they don't
like it, too bad. It's the law.

I provide the six-digit HS tariff numbers for Nixie watches (910212) and
Nixie tubes (854089). Look up the tariff number for your gizmo and write
it in there! This lets them know that you're a seasoned professional

[neonixie-l] damo454 --> WARNIGN! new potential cheater at Ebay

2015-04-11 Thread Dieter Waechter

Dear Nixie friends,
I have to report a new Ebay member from Australia as a potential cheater.

Data:
Ebay user name: damo454
Adress:
Damien Tonks
34 Keith Parade
Beaconsfield, Victoria 3807
Australia
e-mail: damo...@hotmail.com

His trick:
He sells Nixie tubes at Ebay, offers air parcel post only.
After you have paid, you will note that the package does not arrive at the
date he tells you (for sea mail parcel).
Then he tells you a wrong tracking number for letter mail (not pacel post)
which does not work.
Then he tells you that you have choosen sea mail and it will take "3
months"(!) to receive tha package.

He also tells this lies at the Paypal claim.
You know: after 3 months you have no chance to start a Paypal claim and you
have lost your money.
We have had luck, we and Paypal checked the trick and they refunded our
money.

So take care.
Do not buy from him.
All the best
Dieter

Never heard about the neon lamps used in early mechanical television? The
neon lamp (Neontron®) was used as a light source behind the Nipkow disc. I was
in the local museum in Hastings (UK), where I saw that Bayrd TV-machine, that
should have also one. But unfortunantely the lamp missed, ashame!

Dieter,

Another idea is to use a decimal point, if the tube has one, as a
secondary anode for a very high voltage trigger pulse. This would work
similar to the xenon flash tubes in cameras.

I have found out that:
- higher voltage does not make a change

I don't think there would be any need to add helium, hydrogen, or
even krypton-85 to *indicator* tubes.

Helium and hydrogen no, but some 5092s had Kr85 for rapid ionization
for multiplexed use. Discussion on this list from 2010:

Dieter,

It needs a trigger event to start some ionization. I think that a blue or
UV LED will do the trick. Have not tried this myself.

Re: [neonixie-l] IN-18 versus Z5660M Nixie Tubes

2014-06-04 Thread Dieter Waechter

Hi!

do You have more information about "sputtering windows"? I hear it for
the first time. I know that any hole significantly bigger then anode
screen holes let the sputtered particles to go through and deposit on
the glass

Yes, that's it.
See my first picture here:
http://www.tube-tester.com/sites/nixie/data/in18.htm
There you see the sputtering windows very good.
And these avoid darkening on the front of the tubes as you already wrote.
That's all.

Can You compare deposit of mercury doped IN-18 and non-doped IN-18
after years of usage?

All of these have been doped. All have giver pills. all have getters.
I think the amount of mercury is the same aswell since all show the same
bluespot ghost light with low Vkk.
MAYBE that means: They probably have changed the gas mixture. Not sure if I
am right with this thought.

But I did not care about that so much.
Dieter

PS: For all people of the group who wrote me and I did not answer: I'm very
sorry, at the moment I have no time to work on Nixie projects - I build a
house at the moment so very very little spare time.

Re: [neonixie-l] IN-18 versus Z5660M Nixie Tubes

2014-06-04 Thread Dieter Waechter
HI!
Yes, Nick ;-)
I'm already in contact with Darin.
I would say:
IN-18 and Z5660M are both wonderful and perfect Nixie tubes.
I like the IN-18 more - these are the best ever made (in my opinion).
And they nearly last forever.
Yes, the older tubes before 1989 need a longer CP prevention. But they are also
very very very good.
I have some running for about 10 years in continuous operation, and they are
still bright as at the first day.
The reason is because they have sputtering windows. And the sputtering windows
of the 10 year old tubes are heavily mirrored already.
Unfortunately my stock of high datecode tubes runs out soon.
All the best

Yep, the IN-18's have date stamps. You'll probably pay a little more for
those that are date coded in the late 80's early nineties...I think the
'youngest' IN-18's I've seen is 1992 and the oldest 1974. Apart from the Hg
doping in the later date codes (no idea when that started), there's really no
difference that I can tell...others on this list (Dieter!) will know a lot more
about that...

There are some good kits out there for the larger tubes. PM me if you want
any recommendations.

Here's my 2 cents having built clocks with both of them.

The IN-18's are larger but not by too much and have more elongated
numerals. They are also a little cheaper than the Z5660M as far as I can see at
the moment, but still around 35 to 40 dollars a tube! The Z566/5660M are a
little rarer and some would argue that the digit shape is more aesthetically
pleasing. With regards to failure, I've had more issues with Z566's than
IN-18's but I don't think there's any significant difference between the two. I
think the datasheet for IN-18's says 5 or 10,000 hrs lifetime, but I've ran
tubes for a lot longer than that without any sign of degradation (make sure the
clock you use has some form of cathode poisoning prevention, digit cycling etc).

Were you buying a kit to put these in or building a clock from scratch?

And not to forget: Is it 100% noiseless at all load conditions? (that's the

I remember I tested some of your old modules (forgot the number(s)) and

Can anyone help me with identifying this tube? It's similar in size to an
XN-11, no markings on the back, coloured wire leads...looking at the bottom of
the tube with the digits facing towards you the anode is at 11' o'clock and the
digits go from 9 to 0 clockwise until there's a final gap between 0 and the
anode at about 10 o'clock...

Any info would be greatly appreciated!

  Thanks,

Re: [neonixie-l] Advertizing [Fwd: [NEONIXIE-L] Digest Number 1053]

2013-02-03 Thread Dieter Waechter
I agree with Tom, and I ask you to offer all, adverdize all, send all your
interesting Ebay auction links, spam my privat mail address with Nixie
related offers as much as you can. Send tons of price lists, pictures of
your offered items or all that you want. Commercial or private - OFFER AND
ADVERITZE ALL TO ME! - I'm very happy with it.

Thanks

I'm certain most of the list members understand we have an interest in
something which you can't go to the local hobby shop to get and how
cooperation between members (Tim's group purchase, Dieter sharing tube
specs, etc ) is the only way we can do anything. In addition to the
supply problem I prefer to purchase things from list members ahead of
completely unknown sources.

I'm too busy to always know whats being sold and by whom. You can save me
a lot of time and energy if you give me a heads up on the list.

Advertize (that's the e-spelling), all you want!

Tom

Hello, here is a digest from shortly after I joined Neonixie, in early
2004. So I have been here just a little while. I also coordinated the
over
1000 tube Richardson group buy. I chip something into the group every
now

and then. I also post once and a while when I list something on E-bay
that might be interesting to the group. So I don't see any problems with
Dieters post/advertizing. Dieter has added a lot to the group, his post
is
directly related to our hobby. If Dieter does well he is more likely to
be

going out and finding more tubes and new types of Nixies for all of the
rest of us. Over the years I have seen a lot of people post new clocks
etc that they have up for sale. So the long and short of it is I see no
problem with the occasional blurb. The next one may be for that item you
never knew you had to have.

I have an archive of the old yahoo posts. Here it is:
https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B0bo1325G8EQUUd2VjZuRnBtcHc
After opening this page there will be a menu in the left top corner. Choose
File, then Download.
After downloading unpack and copy the file into Thunderbird's profile
Mail\'Local Folders' folder. Restart Thunderbird and you should see it under
your Local Folders'. First access will take a moment as Thunderbird will
have to index it first.
There is a glitch with emails reporting html/text and heaving only text...
Will have to sort it our on one point.

Dear all,

In spite of having designed a new sleek Nixie watch, I still have many
requests for the big old style. I can't argue; the Woz has made it a
must-have item.

I have had many requests to make the lugs more beefy, and the strap a
bit wider. I am going from 20mm to 22mm.

What do you think of the new lug design? Is it OK, or are some
proportions off?

[neonixie-l] Anode Mesh or Anode Grid?

2012-09-24 Thread Dieter Waechter

Hi Friends,
What is the right word to use in English?
"Anode Mesh" or "Anode Grid"?
My thoughts: It is not a "grid" - since (you know) a grid in an electron
tube can never be the anode.

It is more a "mesh".
Or is another word better?
What do you think?
