Over a (4) day period, the digits in one of the tubes stopped working in PWM dimmed mode. At full brightness, the digits in the affected tube slowly lost percentages of digit coverage to where only portions of each digit would illuminate. At the end of the observed period, the digits in the failing tube went completely dark and even higher voltage on the bench would not illuminate any of the cathodes. The tube date code was 8505. I am guessing that absent of any other signs of damage, a seal around one of the pins has failed and allowed the tube to leak. It was surprising how quickly it failed and none of the other tubes in the same clock have exhibited any signs of trouble and look as good as the first day of operation. Has anyone experienced similar failures with the IN-18? Is this a typical failure mechanism? Have there been any particular date codes that others have found to be problematic? The tube has been since been replaced and the clock is happy again but curiosity leads me to ask about this experience to the rest of the members of the group. FYI - these tubes have not been rotated since the clock was initially put into operation (no handling). There was never any evidence of cathode poisoning during the operation of the clock. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "neonixie-l" group. Re: [neonixie-l] OT: US Customs Service - Delays
I am in Seattle. I have not had a problem. I get about 1 package a day as I have a bad habit of buying far more items than I will ever have time for the projects they are intended for. In fact, I have been very lucky in that I am getting items even faster than expected - stuff I haven't expected for at least another week or so after I get them. Only 2 packages have ever been lost coming to me, and both of those actually at customs. Hard to complain with the seller since tracking obviously shows at US customs. It's amazing how cheap everything is from China, etc. So, I took on the practice of double purchasing the same items from 2 diff people just to make sure I get what I want. With my luck of delivery and speed, I will cut back on this tactic - no sense on having 10x LCD displays when I only needed 2. 5 should have been enough overpurchase, but at $3 each shipped with i2c backpacks, how can you say no to these types of deals? :) Michail In a message dated 3/30/2016 9:08:23 A.M. Pacific Daylight Time, neonixie-l@googlegroups.com writes: In the past, I had been complaining of the German Customs Service for holding and delaying delivery of parcels. Well, its seems, lately, that the US Customs Service has adopted the same bad habit. In the last couple of months, parcels coming my way, from outside the US, have been held at a customs warehouse for typically a week. Thru the magic of "tracking numbers", I've noticed an expected parcel sitting at one place, inside this country, for a week, before progressing to its next station. Most of the time, I try to buy stuff within the national boarders. For someone that lives near a major port, like Los Angeles, as I do, that usually works out. Especially with stuff from China. The whole San Gabriel Valley (or at least the section between state route 60, and Interstate 10) has turned into one big warehouse of Chinese goods. So if I want to buy cheap USB cables or plastic filament (for my 3D printer), I can find a vendor less than 30 miles away. But sometimes, I need something that's not locally found, and I have to bite the bullet. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "neonixie-l" group. Re: [neonixie-l] b7971 request
Dylan, Your best bet for price is going to be ebay; however, you will suffer in that that's where all the junk is too. There is a reason that most sellers claim to be selling 'untested' tubes. If you get them from someone in here (I have plenty), then you will pay more; however, you will get known good tested tubes. I don't think you will get NOS. I doubt they exist. I highly suggest you get 6 instead of 4. :) Just got the email with the ebay link. Good seller. Tested tubes. Guessing $400 plus. Jeff, Of the 30 or so tubes I have at home, only 4 have the post. (I will check more when I get to work tomorrow.) What I did notice is that not only did all 4 have the mica spacer at the top, but that all the other regular tubes have the spacer with the hole for the post pre-punched out. Re: [neonixie-l] Bad B7971's
Jeff, Sorry, I have not taken notes as to which the tubes were, although I have both types. I did look at some to see that the ones WITH the needle still have the mica spacers at the top. So, you should still be fine smacking them around. The tubes with the little space needle uses wire coming up from the bottom to the clips. The ones without the needle have the type of circuit board going up to the clips. I believe the last two tubes I was 'playing' with are disconnected at the clip to the element (not the circuit/wire to the clip). I could take pictures when I get to work of various tubes if you're looking for something specific. There is a market. You can post on ebay as people still want them, but I highly suggest you be honest with an element being bad and light it up. Michail In a message dated 3/6/2016 1:47:41 P.M. Pacific Standard Time, jwalton...@gmail.com writes: Michail, Thanks for the explanation and photos of the 7971 tubes. I have several that I will try to “repair” based on seeing what you have been able to fix. There are some of the early 7971 tubes that use a thin rod to the top of the tube for support instead of the mica spacers and they may not respond too well to shock. The later tubes (64 and later) which have partial or full mica spacers holding everything (top and bottom) should be fairly robust. Have you noticed any more or less issues with the circuit board backplane vs the wire interconnect versions? I also have a couple tubes with a dead segment where I can visually see an open wire from the pins to the segment. Wasn’t thinking there was much of a market for them but maybe for someone building a clock where the tens-hours is either one or zero might be able to use them. Much depends on the font that is being used. Re: [neonixie-l] Bad B7971's
For me, I buy them all from various people on ebay. Seems strange that these tubes receive such an impact from shipping that they would cross over. I think people are selling them on ebay knowing there is an issue with stuck segments already, but don't know about smacking them and so they sell as 'untested'. There is/was a specific seller on ebay (he is still selling Nixie stuff) and about a third of the 40 tubes were flawed in this way. I posted and video showing him. He wanted me to file a claim stating they were damaged in shipping. Not happy with this, I filed a claim with paypal instead and shipped them back to him. Strangely, several days after getting them back, another seller (obviously a friend in the same area) had them up for auction. Michail In a message dated 3/6/2016 2:08:38 P.M. Thought I would share, althought I might have already. Last purchase on ebay was a sign which was made up of 7 tubes and says 'GO AWAY' or 'WELCOME' depending on the position of the switch. 6 more tubes were to come with it. Well, I took video of opening the 2 boxes just because of experience with prior ebayers. They were labeled from 1 - 13. Well, there was only 12 tubes in the boxes (tube #12 was missing). Re: [neonixie-l] Bad B7971's
Nick, I have unfortunately been very lucky in getting bad tubes from ebay. Probably have 20 or so now (broken, outgassed, missing segments). I have taken the excessive risk in smacking them to get segments free of the ones that have overlapping and before and after pictures. I think you will be surprised at how much impact the tubes can take before breaking. That said, I have smacked them against my cupped hand to spread the impact point (not against a table). I would say that I have recovered nearly all overlapping issue tubes. Obviously, you have to look at the overlap and take an educated guess at the angle you want to hit (multiple times with increasing force until resolved). I do think in the years of tube smacking, I have only had one break in my hand. Also, I have only made one tube bad in that the overlap dislodged; however, another segment stopped working (the connection from the circuit wire to the mica) and I can't even be sure the segment was not an issue prior to the smacking. The flow meters are completely designed and assembled including the circuit boards right in their moderate sized building. Some even go to NASA for use with their launch systems. He is the circuit and circuit board designer. Neat!! Well I got a complete tour, met the owners dog etc. It seems like a great place to work! Exactly that. Main way to tell is that you always have to RFQ and/or request details. Most of these sites never list a price since they are more likely to get your email addy when you request a price. Most are out there just to get valid email addresses. You are then on the permanent spam lists. Michail Wilson 206-920-6312 In a message dated 2/29/2016 1:58:22 P.M. Then there are other sites that comb the internet for items that are for sale, and place those very same items on their own website for sale. I see this happen all the time, with items that are for sale on Ebay. You can prove this to yourself quite easily. Find an item on Ebay that you have an interest in, then go and use a search engine (I do use Google), to search the net for that same item, being sure to use some of the key words in the headline of the original Ebay ad. Lo and behold that same item will show up on several different websites for sale. If this doesn't work the first time, you may have to try a different item. Ira. Terry, Just to be clear, when it doesn't receive a signal after 10 mins of putting in the batteries, it resorts to a standard quartz clock - 32.678 Hz xtal. So, it wouldn't need to be modded. Re: [neonixie-l] Flip Clock with WWVB
Received the clocks a couple of days ago. Assembled two in 45 mins. Kind of fun. You are correct. They are JJY. So, when you install the battery, they automatically go to 00:00 Louder than I expected. Along the lines of my gear clock (stepper motor). Even though the LED blinks (not at a rate of once per second), nothing happens. meaning, I don't think it's for receiving a signal since it's JJY After 10 mins, it makes you believe it caught a signal as it starts to advance, but it only goes to 00:10 (the time it was waiting for a signal) and then simply goes on through it's quartz xtal timing as a normal clock. 2 buttons allow you to advance hours and mins per button. Holding a button down and releasing resets the wheel. (Holding mins down for a few seconds and releasing while at 15, will simply cycle the mins until it goes back to 15.) There are 2x DC motors. One for each wheel. They get activated for about a tenth of a second to run the motor to it geared end, and then a spring pulls it back. This advances the gear by one notch. It's probably going to be easier to just swap out the circuit board with an Arduino and WWVB module than to modify with a WWVB (which would probably still need a PIC or arduino to convert WWVB to JJY output). Anyway, not sure I can beat the price at $9.95 simply for the mechanics for a flip clock. Michail Wilson 206-920-6312 In a message dated 1/27/2016 7:33:04 P.M. Thought a few people might be interested in this for a fun little kit (although not Nixie). http://www.makershed.com/products/electric-wave-clock They had it for $54.99 Sale price of $24.99 BUT, if you go to the site, it is a blow out sale for $9.99 Just the WWVB receiver is worth that for the project. Re: [neonixie-l] 1363 carrier board, free surplus for UK readers
Robin, Since I don't use twitter, I shamefully took 15 mins just to figure out how to tweet to the tubes. It was a quick response/email back. Nice! I have threatened to do something like that in the past, but with 16 or more tubes. Unfortunately, skills and more importantly time seem to be more elusive than acquiring the tubes. This is the second such project I have seen. Now I am further behind. :) Michail Wilson 206-920-6312 In a message dated 12/26/2015 10:16:17 A.M. I started with four tubes but they seem to be addictive and I now have twelve but only eight are mounted :) I was thinking of going for ten in total as that would cover most words commonlyused but my current temporary chassis ( a 2U 19" blanking plate ) is full now. The number of PSU slots on the PCB was really just governed by the maximum PCB size of 100mm x 100mm for the prototype deal. Currently one PSU per pair of tubes seems to work OK, I'll get to measuring the current properly soon but for a while I had three tubes off one PSU without any apparent problems. I see you had a go at displaying your name :) Sorry about the camera angle that seems to have tilted somewhat, it'll have to stay that way till I get back to my workshop in the new year. Still have to test out the PC board and program the CPU. http://www.cathodecorner.com/nwl/index.html It will be a bit more expensive due to the extra fancy case machining required, but fine fashion accessories always cost more. [neonixie-l] Restoration of Nixie clocks
I don't want to make this a long story or to get pity; however, My house caught fire 2 weeks ago. Structure is fine. Cause of fire was salt water tank (not a nixie clock). Structure is fine, but smoke damage has destroyed a LOT. Reason for my post is that I have (or had) over 30 nixie clocks and stock piles of tubes. They tell me they dip (in what?) electronics, but are worried that the TUBE devices (the clocks). I have a day to decide if I want them to try dipping.Suggestions on an answer or sell off the clocks as is for a premium (heh - sad face) as they are covered in soot and obvious smell of being in a fire. I did take 2x MOD6 clocks on Friday to work to see if I could just clean them myself. On my way to work, I got rear-ended, so needless to say, those 12 tubes were destroyed in the back. Uhhhg, bad luck. So, question - anyone know 'what' they are going to DIP the clocks in and will it destroy the tubes? Re: [neonixie-l] Re: Make a clock, go to jail
Without going into a long email... We don't know what the device looks like! We don't even know if it was counting down or working at all. A claim is that he couldn't call his parents, because he was being searched the entire time. We do have to realize that his parents were called long before he even got to the police station, so that would have been on their way. Very rough to say he wasn't allowed to call them, cause they were probably on their way or even there before he arrived. We also don't know what questions were asked or the answers he provided. It's very possible that they asked... could it be used as a timer for a bomb and he could have honestly answered that it could be (just like any timer or even wrist watch). We simply don't know. The major issue here for me is, I hate seeing the race card pulled every damn time something happens or is done by anyone but white. If anything happens, it's a 'hate' crime to the media - race or sexual orientation, etc just so that it gains media attention. Also, as for Nixie clock and school. My son (14 now) built a kit last year for a kind of show and tell. Although not considered a bomb, they wouldn't let him, because it was "High Voltage" and considered dangerous. My son is white, so I couldn't pull the race card. Also, not gay, so couldn't call it out as a hate crime / prejudice thing either. Also, I would MUCH rather a clock (movie bomb) real or not be taken away. Too many kids dying in schools by people NOT doing anything about it. How many kids go to school to get shot up while someone had prior knowledge that could have prevented the entire issue. Take a $10 clock vs losing possible many kids to a bomb. (Note, he was warned not to show it to anyone else, but still did. - another warning ignored.) Michail In a message dated 9/16/2015 8:00:11 A.M. Thanks, I considered it, but need 3 needles. Although that would be great for a clock, I want seconds to show time movement. It's kind of like having a 4 tube nixie clock. Little boring. Re: [neonixie-l] Re: IN-18 Modular Arduino clock layout updated
:) Still interested. How many boards are you doing? Also, thoughts of a 7971 driver board? =:D Michail In a message dated 2/27/2015 8:17:05 P.M. Pacific Standard Time, neonixie-l@googlegroups.com writes: You guys persuaded me to add a 2nd LED under each tube. Done. 3 - not going to happen. I also liked Pete's cascode anode driver idea so much I've adopted that as well. Interesting side effect of doing that -- no need for a ground connection to the 2 digit extension boards. That seems strange even to me... but the nixies don't need it, the cathode drivers are all on the main board, and the LED and colon drivers don't require a ground connection either, as they are low side drivers on the main board. This frees up two pins on the 20 pin inter-board connectors. Hmmm Thinking out loud, I'm wondering if I can use one of the pins to identify to the Arduino just how many extension boards there are -- therefore allowing the software to auto-configure based on the hardware. A pull-up on the extension board and a pull-down on the main board would form a voltage divider I could feed into an analog input. 2 extension boards would change the voltage level. The code can then make the mux rate and colons behave as required, based on the number of tubes present. Getting close to ordering boards, if I can just put a stop to the creeping elegance. Terry On Wednesday, February 25, 2015 at 8:34:26 PM UTC-6, Terry S wrote: Ok, John shamed me into tweaking the layout. Here's the latest revs. I did address the lines crossing the hole keepouts, as well as rationalizing out a whole bunch of vias. My criteria for a clean design includes as few as possible jogs in the traces, minimal number of vias within reason, and an adherence to x on one layer and y on the other until the routing is done, then around the margins, it becomes OK to violate that rule. Symmetrical layouts of repeated circuitry. Also only 45 degree bends, (90 or 45 at vias OK) clean pad entry, (no acid traps), trace widths no narrower than the design justifies... very conservative rules. Makes for high yields and reliable boards. Anyway, now I'm pretty happy with both of these boards, and after some careful design validation, I'll be ready to order boards. So your feedback, please. Re: [neonixie-l] Re: Itching to build...
Terry, I am interested. Michail Wilson 206-920-6312 In a message dated 2/7/2015 12:30:08 P.M. Pacific Standard Time, neonixie-l@googlegroups.com writes: Ok, so I went ahead and started designed my own clock, borrowing heavily from an existing open source design. Here's what it entails. I have IN-18's and love those tubes, so naturally it uses them. I designed a main module that has the Arduino interface, power supply, control logic, 2 anode drivers, and 2 IN-18 tube socket footprints. At the end of that module there is a 20 pin connector to mate with a 2nd board I designed, identical in shape and size to the main module, but only has the 2 IN-18 socket footprints and the corresponding anode drivers. This slave module also has the 20 pin connector at far end. The result is that a clock can be configured using 1, 2, or 3 modules. If someone wanted, they could build a 2 digit clock (not sure why you would do that) or a 4 digit (my preference) or a 6 digit clock. I will be including provisions for under-tube LED lighting, even though I dislike it, and colons, which I do like. The colons will be controllable. I prefer a flashing colon on 4 digit clocks, and a static colon on 6 digit clocks. Since it's Arduino driven, the end user can do whatever he/she likes as far as timekeeping, (GPS, etc) features, etc. I will be producing a number of boards excess to my needs, so let me know if you are interested. I will NOT be supporting software that will be up to you. The board is designed such that the open-source software should work without modification, or with very little, for basic 4 or 6 digit clock functionality. The boards will have both thru-hole and surface mount parts. You will need to be able to solder your own SMT components. Any interest? As far as pricing, I'm only going to be looking to recover my blank board costs. I'd design my own and have done so in the past, but I know there are already many choices. I can do SMT work no problem, would like a highly featured clock with GPS sync capability, but it should be able to operate stand-alone as well. Would consider either 4 or 6 tube, 6 preferred. LED lighting is unnecessary, colons are necessary. Arduino based would be nice so I can play with the code a little easier, PIC ok as far as that goes too. Compact form factor is a plus, as is low cost. Please don't just throw out links I can find those. I'd rather hear about your actual experience with the kit. It's a great idea; however, I would suggest coping all the pages below the front page as well. Links still go back to original. Michail Wilson 206-920-6312 In a message dated 7/31/2014 11:21:21 A.M. Re: [neonixie-l] Re: Compatible GPS receiver for a Nixichron?
That is the one I had. Keep in mind, I think he said that 2 of the wires were changed. So, the end had to be replaced to make this happen. I believe later changed so that the wires were swapped at the unit instead of changing the end. Of course this might have been the issue for someone else completely, but just thought I would bring it up as someone else might recall the exact issue. When I started having issues with this a few years ago Jeff pointed me to a few antennas on Ebay but he would need to reprogram the unit to be able to use them. Now that he has passed away, sadly, it would be nice to find a direct plug and play replacement. Thanks! Re: [neonixie-l] 7971 nixies sighted on Ebay
Easy to sell for $750 for a set of 6. The bigger issue on ebay is if you can trust the seller or not. And the fact that MOST of those auctions say "as is" or "not tested". I do have to say that my favorite auction was the one showing the crack and stating you only need to fix the crack and refill with gases. Heh. Buy them and keep them for an investment. I would happily sell ya a set of four for a Bitcoin. Also, it's hard to appreciate that big clock until you have it in front of you. You might just want one for each room. I mean, they all sync up to the same GPS signal transmitter. I spent days running from room to room seeing if the time was dead on accurate. Ok, JK. I think there are people in this group that have the clocks for sale as well. Half the fun and appreciation is building it yourself. :] Michail In a message dated 5/15/2014 2:31:19 A.M. Pacific Daylight Time, benpottin...@gmail.com writes: Wow! Did anyone check out those auctions? I saw a set of 6 for 750$ and another set of 4 for 1200$!! Apparently the sellers think they won the lotto with those things! Does anyone really want a large glowy tube that badly? I'm all about cool stuff, I bought a bunch of Russian tubes to play around with, but I'd have to REALLY want that clock with big digits pretty badly I think. But hey, if they can fetch those prices for the tubes then more power to them. It's the amazing craziness of the free market (which also produces crazy things like Aston kutcher making 700,000$ an episode for a half hour comedy sitcom!) -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "neonixie-l" group.
