I recently had a IN-18 failure in a clock after about 2.5 year operation.
Over a (4) day period, the digits in one of the tubes stopped working in
PWM dimmed mode. At full brightness, the digits in the affected tube slowly
lost percentages of digit coverage to where only portions of each digit
would illuminate. At the end of the observed period, the digits in the
failing tube went completely dark and even higher voltage on the bench would
not
illuminate any of the cathodes. The tube date code was 8505.

I am guessing that absent of any other signs of damage, a seal around one
of the pins has failed and allowed the tube to leak. It was surprising how
quickly it failed and none of the other tubes in the same clock have
exhibited any signs of trouble and look as good as the first day of operation.

Has anyone experienced similar failures with the IN-18? Is this a typical
failure mechanism? Have there been any particular date codes that others
have found to be problematic?

The tube has been since been replaced and the clock is happy again but
curiosity leads me to ask about this experience to the rest of the members of
the group. FYI - these tubes have not been rotated since the clock was
initially put into operation (no handling). There was never any evidence of
cathode poisoning during the operation of the clock.

I don't think the issue is Dalibor's tube.
The issue is Single Tube vs 4 Tubes.

Yes, I like the IN-8-2 Option or the ability to change between the tubes
(or simply easily replace tubes as needed).

Thanks for the comments everyone. A serious question though, would anyone
consider it worth adding an IN-8-2 option for example? I'd expected anyone

it hasn't been as popular as I'd hoped.

Re: [neonixie-l] OT: US Customs Service - Delays

2016-03-30 Thread Michail1 via neonixie-l
I am in Seattle.
I have not had a problem. I get about 1 package a day as I have a bad
habit of buying far more items than I will ever have time for the projects
they are intended for.

In fact, I have been very lucky in that I am getting items even faster than
expected - stuff I haven't expected for at least another week or so after
I get them.

Only 2 packages have ever been lost coming to me, and both of those
actually at customs. Hard to complain with the seller since tracking
obviously
shows at US customs.

It's amazing how cheap everything is from China, etc. So, I took on the
practice of double purchasing the same items from 2 diff people just to make
sure I get what I want. With my luck of delivery and speed, I will cut
back on this tactic - no sense on having 10x LCD displays when I only needed
2. 5 should have been enough overpurchase, but at $3 each shipped with
i2c backpacks, how can you say no to these types of deals? :)

Michail

neonixie-l@googlegroups.com writes:

In the past, I had been complaining of the German Customs Service for
holding and delaying delivery of parcels. Well, its seems, lately, that the US
Customs Service has adopted the same bad habit. In the last couple of
months, parcels coming my way, from outside the US, have been held at a
customs
warehouse for typically a week. Thru the magic of "tracking numbers", I've
noticed an expected parcel sitting at one place, inside this country, for a
week, before progressing to its next station.

Most of the time, I try to buy stuff within the national boarders. For
someone that lives near a major port, like Los Angeles, as I do, that usually
works out. Especially with stuff from China. The whole San Gabriel Valley
(or at least the section between state route 60, and Interstate 10) has
turned into one big warehouse of Chinese goods. So if I want to buy cheap USB
cables or plastic filament (for my 3D printer), I can find a vendor less than
30 miles away. But sometimes, I need something that's not locally found,
and I have to bite the bullet.

Re: [neonixie-l] b7971 request

2016-03-23 Thread Michail1 via neonixie-l
Dylan,

Your best bet for price is going to be ebay; however, you will suffer in
that that's where all the junk is too. There is a reason that most sellers
claim to be selling 'untested' tubes.

If you get them from someone in here (I have plenty), then you will pay
more; however, you will get known good tested tubes.

I don't think you will get NOS. I doubt they exist.

I highly suggest you get 6 instead of 4. :)

Just got the email with the ebay link. Good seller. Tested tubes.
Guessing $400 plus. I would personally bid $300 myself in hopes that no one
sees it. :)

more feature rich & a lot faster.Only downside (slight) is 1Gb RAM - more
than enough for Linux.

Getting to really like it...

Well, silver is normal to new tubes when the getter is flashed; however, I
don't see the silver on the picture.

What I do see appears to be white. When the silver turns white, it means
the tube has leaked out. Maybe a crack?

It's possible my eyes are misleading me, but isn't that white?

Jeff,

Of the 30 or so tubes I have at home, only 4 have the post. (I will check
more when I get to work tomorrow.)

What I did notice is that not only did all 4 have the mica spacer at the
top, but that all the other regular tubes have the spacer with the hole for
the post pre-punched out. Also, the tubes with the post stand about 4mm
taller to account for the additional space needed for the post height.

2016-03-06 Thread Michail1 via neonixie-l
Jeff,

Sorry, I have not taken notes as to which the tubes were, although I have
both types. I did look at some to see that the ones WITH the needle still
have the mica spacers at the top. So, you should still be fine smacking
them around.

The tubes with the little space needle uses wire coming up from the bottom
to the clips. The ones without the needle have the type of circuit board
going up to the clips. I believe the last two tubes I was 'playing' with
are disconnected at the clip to the element (not the circuit/wire to the
clip).

I could take pictures when I get to work of various tubes if you're looking
 for something specific.

There is a market. You can post on ebay as people still want them, but I
highly suggest you be honest with an element being bad and light it up.

Thanks for the explanation and photos of the 7971 tubes. I have several

There are some of the early 7971 tubes that use a thin rod to the top of
the tube for support instead of the mica spacers and they may not respond
too well to shock. The later tubes (64 and later) which have partial or
full mica spacers holding everything (top and bottom) should be fairly robust.
Have you noticed any more or less issues with the circuit board backplane
vs the wire interconnect versions?
I also have a couple tubes with a dead segment where I can visually see an
open wire from the pins to the segment. Wasn’t thinking there was much of
a market for them but maybe for someone building a clock where the
tens-hours is either one or zero might be able to use them. Much depends on
the

For me, I buy them all from various people on ebay.

Seems strange that these tubes receive such an impact from shipping that
they would cross over. I think people are selling them on ebay knowing
there is an issue with stuck segments already, but don't know about smacking
them and so they sell as 'untested'.

There is/was a specific seller on ebay (he is still selling Nixie stuff)
and about a third of the 40 tubes were flawed in this way. I posted and
video showing him. He wanted me to file a claim stating they were damaged in
shipping. Not happy with this, I filed a claim with paypal instead and
shipped them back to him. Strangely, several days after getting them back,
another seller (obviously a friend in the same area) had them up for auction.

Re: [neonixie-l] Bad B7971's

2016-03-06 Thread Michail1 via neonixie-l
Nick,

I have unfortunately been very lucky in getting bad tubes from ebay.
Probably have 20 or so now (broken, outgassed, missing segments).

I have taken the excessive risk in smacking them to get segments free of
the ones that have overlapping and before and after pictures. I think you
will be surprised at how much impact the tubes can take before breaking.
That said, I have smacked them against my cupped hand to spread the impact
point (not against a table).

I would say that I have recovered nearly all overlapping issue tubes.
Obviously, you have to look at the overlap and take an educated guess at the
angle you want to hit (multiple times with increasing force until resolved).

I do think in the years of tube smacking, I have only had one break in my
hand.  Also, I have only made one tube bad in that the overlap dislodged;
however, another segment stopped working (the connection from the circuit
wire to the mica) and I can't even be sure the segment was not an issue prior
to the smacking.

Main way to tell is that you always have to RFQ and/or request details.
Most of these sites never list a price since they are more likely to get
your email addy when you request a price.

Most are out there just to get valid email addresses. You are then on the

Re: [neonixie-l] Flip Clock with WWVB

2016-02-03 Thread Michail1 via neonixie-l
Terry,

Just to be clear, when it doesn't receive a signal after 10 mins of putting
in the batteries, it resorts to a standard quartz clock - 32.678 Hz xtal.
So, it wouldn't need to be modded.
And, wow, seconds on this flip clock would drive anyone nuts after a short
time - Far louder than any flip I have heard.

Paolo,
-Agreed. Arduinos are more power hungry. I was thinking more for the
idea of still having WWVB in a flip.
-Yup, looks like Makershed changed the price again from $9.99 to $4.49.
Guess it's time to contact them for a price adjustment or return.
-Aliexpress looks good; however, they don't ship to Washington. I have
tried to buy several things.

Thank goodness there is no seconds display! Can you imagine listening to
that clatter once/second?

It would be trivial to come up with an interface to a normal $5 quartz
clock movement circuit board that would drive the motors. That's what they do
in any clock. I would program a pic or even a PAL to divide by 60 for the
minutes. Divide by 60 again for the hours, and drive the second motor. Set
the time at the top of the hour, connect the battery, and go. Don't over
think it. Not every clock needs to be accurate to the second.

I have many quartz clock movements in the house that never need to be
corrected, except at the DST change. So they get corrected twice a year by
default.

Re: [neonixie-l] Flip Clock with WWVB

2016-02-02 Thread Michail1 via neonixie-l
Received the clocks a couple of days ago. Assembled two in 45 mins. Kind
of fun.

You are correct. They are JJY.
So, when you install the battery, they automatically go to 00:00
Louder than I expected. Along the lines of my gear clock (stepper motor).
Even though the LED blinks (not at a rate of once per second), nothing
happens. meaning, I don't think it's for receiving a signal since it's JJY

After 10 mins, it makes you believe it caught a signal as it starts to
advance, but it only goes to 00:10 (the time it was waiting for a signal) and
then simply goes on through it's quartz xtal timing as a normal clock.

2 buttons allow you to advance hours and mins per button.

Holding a button down and releasing resets the wheel. (Holding mins down
for a few seconds and releasing while at 15, will simply cycle the mins until
it goes back to 15.)

There are 2x DC motors. One for each wheel. They get activated for about
a tenth of a second to run the motor to it geared end, and then a spring
pulls it back. This advances the gear by one notch.

It's probably going to be easier to just swap out the circuit board with an
Arduino and WWVB module than to modify with a WWVB (which would probably
still need a PIC or arduino to convert WWVB to JJY output).

Anyway, not sure I can beat the price at $9.95 simply for the mechanics for
 a flip clock.

for feedback if good or bad idea.

2.For Temperature  Sensor Function:+5.99USD;
3.For 1PCS High Quality Brand 5V/1A USB Power Adapter: +5.99 USD ---> (is

My dream nixie clock has the following characteristics, the most important
being a 1" or so display as I'm 61 so my tired old eye's need a display to
see from 12' away as I sit on the sofa. The IN-14 the ebay seller has
display of 18mm (11/16") high so am willing to go bigger, but not smaller in
size. Want a minimalist clean look with the board viable with a clear case
for safety, LED accents under tubes, a lighted colon separator between
hour, min and seconds. I also like the tube shape of IN-14 and IN-18. The
ebay model listed has the ability to do firmware updates, which I really like
for future flexibility.

The nixie clock will sit on top of my stereo equipment.

If there are any nixie clock builders (especially in the San Francisco Bay
Area where I can buy locally) who has a clock to sell as pictured, or
willing to build one for me, I will pay for the kit and your services.

PM me with questions. Look forward to your collective thoughts. Happy
new year!

Re: [neonixie-l] 1363 carrier board, free surplus for UK readers

2015-12-26 Thread Michail1 via neonixie-l
Robin,

Since I don't use twitter, I shamefully took 15 mins just to figure out how
to tweet to the tubes. It was a quick response/email back. Nice!

I have threatened to do something like that in the past, but with 16 or
more tubes. Unfortunately, skills and more importantly time seem to be more
elusive than acquiring the tubes.

This is the second such project I have seen. Now I am further behind. :)

there's no technical reason not to go with more tubes, the smartsockets
can be chained together more or less indefinitely (there is *eventually* a
speed issue as the boards pass the data along the chain at 9600 baud ) and
the pi has loads of resource compared with a microcontroller. I started with
four tubes but they seem to be addictive and I now have twelve but only
eight are mounted :)

I was thinking of going for ten in total as that would cover most words
commonlyused but my current temporary chassis ( a 2U 19" blanking plate ) is
full now.

The number of PSU slots on the PCB was really just governed by the maximum
PCB size of 100mm x 100mm for the prototype deal. Currently one PSU per
pair of tubes seems to work OK, I'll get to measuring the current properly
soon but for a while I had three tubes off one PSU without any apparent
problems.

I see you had a go at displaying your name :) Sorry about the camera
angle that seems to have tilted somewhat, it'll have to stay that way till I
get back to my workshop in the new year. That's the next big bit: making a
case and proper camera stand rather than the bit of rail and vice deployed
now :)

3 have crossed over segments. Will post a pic if the above links work.

This causes, not only both segments to light, but will short down the full
line of tubes (obviously depending on the build design).

Once, I was able to 'thump' the tube hard enough with a knuckle to
dislodge it (risky, but I was surprised it worked).

I just purchased 13 tubes on ebay (actually, the seller shorted me by one
and I fortunately compeletely opened and counted tubes from the package
while recording video - little hard to argue that). In any case, 3 of the
remaining tubes have the same issue. I really would hate to risk thumping the
tubes in fear of breaking them.

I thought I saw at one time that someone applied power to heat it and
shake the tube or simply apply a lot of power in order to completely blast the
short. I don't recall.

Any suggestions?

It will be a bit more expensive due to the extra fancy case machining

[neonixie-l] Restoration of Nixie clocks

2015-10-26 Thread Michail1 via neonixie-l
I don't want to make this a long story or to get pity; however,

My house caught fire 2 weeks ago. Structure is fine. Cause of fire was
salt water tank (not a nixie clock).

Structure is fine, but smoke damage has destroyed a LOT. Reason for my
post is that I have (or had) over 30 nixie clocks and stock piles of tubes.
They tell me they dip (in what?) electronics, but are worried that the TUBE
devices (the clocks).

I have a day to decide if I want them to try dipping.Suggestions on an
answer or sell off the clocks as is for a premium (heh - sad face) as they
are covered in soot and obvious smell of being in a fire.

I did take 2x MOD6 clocks on Friday to work to see if I could just clean
them myself.
On my way to work, I got rear-ended, so needless to say, those 12 tubes
were destroyed in the back. Uhhhg, bad luck.

So, question - anyone know 'what' they are going to DIP the clocks in and
will it destroy the tubes?

The problem is not the kids, it's that school officials think that what
they see in Hollywood movies is real.

Re: [neonixie-l] Re: Make a clock, go to jail

2015-09-16 Thread Michail1 via neonixie-l
Without going into a long email...

We don't know what the device looks like! We don't even know if it was
counting down or working at all.

A claim is that he couldn't call his parents, because he was being
searched the entire time. We do have to realize that his parents were called
long
before he even got to the police station, so that would have been on their
way. Very rough to say he wasn't allowed to call them, cause they were
probably on their way or even there before he arrived. We also don't know
what questions were asked or the answers he provided.
It's very possible that they asked... could it be used as a timer for a
bomb and he could have honestly answered that it could be (just like any timer
or even wrist watch). We simply don't know.

The major issue here for me is, I hate seeing the race card pulled every
damn time something happens or is done by anyone but white. If anything
happens, it's a 'hate' crime to the media - race or sexual orientation, etc
just so that it gains media attention.

Also, as for Nixie clock and school. My son (14 now) built a kit last
year for a kind of show and tell. Although not considered a bomb, they
wouldn't let him, because it was "High Voltage" and considered dangerous. My
son
is white, so I couldn't pull the race card. Also, not gay, so couldn't
call it out as a hate crime / prejudice thing either.

Also, I would MUCH rather a clock (movie bomb) real or not be taken away.
Too many kids dying in schools by people NOT doing anything about it. How
many kids go to school to get shot up while someone had prior knowledge
that could have prevented the entire issue. Take a $10 clock vs losing
possible many kids to a bomb. (Note, he was warned not to show it to anyone
else, but still did. - another warning ignored.)

"Action" is necessary with two tubes if you want to display all time

The circuit is 95% complete: it misses a couple of buttons to manually
adjust the time. I should then find a suitable wooden box. Speaking of
buttons, I am looking for suggestions to keep the 60's look since I hit Earth
slightly later than that "era".

Circuit details:

- Two Burroughs B5092 on correct sockets
- Arduino clone with my own firmware (will be public)

- RTC DS1307 with battery backup

- _lumos.sk_ (http://lumos.sk/) HV PSU

- K155DI BCD decoder/drivers

My clock feels like a bridge across cold war powers time warped to 2015 :)

How about the Dashboard of an not so old old car? The cars these days
have everything displayed electricaly, so the Speedo and tach are really
just electrical meters. Some have a gas guage and temperature guage
that also work electricaly.

(one caution, some use a stepper motor to drag along a magnet much like
a speedometer, with the speed of the motor depending an the value that
they want to show.)

Perhaps their is a "pick and pull" junkyard in your area where you can
salvage what you need.

Thanks,

I have done that project (PIC) and I have done Arduino project.

I was hoping to find an old meter that already had 3 meters in it instead
of building one. Convert something vintage to a clock.

Alan does have a nice and cheap kits though. Although not a premade
circuit board - It required point to point soldering. (Having missed a single
ground wire, it took days to trace out the mistake.

Hi Folks,
I got around to doing something with the B-7971 I had. Along with a

It's an FLW-alike that is connected to Twitter to harvest words, here's a
link to a short vid:
_youtube video_ (https://i.ytimg.com/vi/86_GQmUG-Lk/default.jpg)

Not much electrical engineering going on with the design as I just used
TaylorEdge PSU and smart sockets, the fun was in the programming the Pi.

It needs a case making but I'm waiting on a camera extension cable right
now (and also tempted to add at least two more tubes ... has anyone from the
UK here got any I could buy?)

It displays the time and the words that will fit on the display from a
random tweet feed. It also displays TWOI: the TWitter Originality Index or the
ratio of original tweets to retweets seen in the random feed.

It will listen out for any tweets with the hashtag #NixieBotShowMe use
that tag and it'll send you back a picture of the next word in your tweet
after that tag that will fit on the display.

Other tags you can add on are #NBreceipt for a DM acknowledgement and
#TheTime .

@mention others in your tweet to get them mentioned in the reply.

Outgoing tweets are limited to one a minute and queued so you may have to
wait a while if it gets popular.

Follow it on twitter @NixieBot to see all the words that get sent.

Bear in mind that it's the internet providing words so don't blame me if
you see something rude. Hopefully the fact that everyone who wants to can see
what was submitted by who (and reply to them ) should make it somewhat
self policing... maybe!

Future additions planned include fetching and displaying the odd stock
quotation every now and then (for old time's sake) and maybe plugging it into
this mailing list for a word source too. Other ideas welcome :)

Cheers,
   Robin.

I also liked Pete's cascode anode driver idea so much I've adopted that as
well.

Interesting side effect of doing that -- no need for a ground connection
to the 2 digit extension boards. That seems strange even to me... but the
nixies don't need it, the cathode drivers are all on the main board, and the
LED and colon drivers don't require a ground connection either, as they are
low side drivers on the main board.

This frees up two pins on the 20 pin inter-board connectors. Hmmm
Thinking out loud, I'm wondering if I can use one of the pins to identify to
the Arduino just how many extension boards there are -- therefore allowing
the software to auto-configure based on the hardware. A pull-up on the
extension board and a pull-down on the main board would form a voltage divider
I
could feed into an analog input. 2 extension boards would change the
voltage level. The code can then make the mux rate and colons behave as
required,
based on the number of tubes present.

Getting close to ordering boards, if I can just put a stop to the
creeping elegance.

Ok, so I went ahead and started designed my own clock, borrowing heavily
from an existing open source design.

Here's what it entails. I have IN-18's and love those tubes, so naturally
it uses them. I designed a main module that has the Arduino interface, power
supply, control logic, 2 anode drivers, and 2 IN-18 tube socket
footprints. At the end of that module there is a 20 pin connector to mate with
a 2nd
board I designed, identical in shape and size to the main module, but only
has the 2 IN-18 socket footprints and the corresponding anode drivers.
This slave module also has the 20 pin connector at far end.

The result is that a clock can be configured using 1, 2, or 3 modules. If
someone wanted, they could build a 2 digit clock (not sure why you would do
that) or a 4 digit (my preference) or a 6 digit clock.

I will be including provisions for under-tube LED lighting, even though I
dislike it, and colons, which I do like. The colons will be controllable. I
prefer a flashing colon on 4 digit clocks, and a static colon on 6 digit
clocks.

Since it's Arduino driven, the end user can do whatever he/she likes as
far as timekeeping, (GPS, etc) features, etc. I will be producing a number of
boards excess to my needs, so let me know if you are interested. I will NOT
be supporting software that will be up to you. The board is designed
such that the open-source software should work without modification, or with
very little, for basic 4 or 6 digit clock functionality.

The boards will have both thru-hole and surface mount parts. You will need
to be able to solder your own SMT components.

Any interest? As far as pricing, I'm only going to be looking to recover
my blank board costs.

well. I'd design my own and have done so in the past, but I know there are
already many choices.

I can do SMT work no problem, would like a highly featured clock with GPS
sync capability, but it should be able to operate stand-alone as well.

Would consider either 4 or 6 tube, 6 preferred. LED lighting is
unnecessary, colons are necessary.

Arduino based would be nice so I can play with the code a little easier,
PIC ok as far as that goes too.

Compact form factor is a plus, as is low cost.

Please don't just throw out links I can find those. I'd rather hear

http://forums.watchuseek.com/f77/first-true-nixie-watch-concept-1482449.html

Check it out, you will see a 3D model of the watch with some more details.

The nixie tube inside will be assembled soon - in a couple of weeks, and
I'll post some photos what I finish it.

I must mention Dalibor Farny here because he helped me a lot during my
work. Thanks Dalibor!

In the 10's hours position, several of the digits are not lighting
completely, they are dark toward the bottom of the tube, probably the bottom
1/3
of the numeral.

This happened rather suddenly, or at least I only noticed it recently. The
"1" digit is fine, and that's what is lit most of the time. The other
digits only come into play during display of the GPS coordinates every 1/4
hour. As they scroll across the clock, I can see the bad digits.

Has anyone seen this particulat failure mode in an IN-18? Bottom of some
digits failing to glow?

I do have a couple spare tubes, but they have no hours on them. I'll try
one to be certain it's just the tube. But I'd actually like to find a used
tube, something with several years worth of use on it, so the brightness
will be a better match.

Re: [neonixie-l] Re: Compatible GPS receiver for a Nixichron?

2014-07-31 Thread Michail1 via neonixie-l
That is the one I had.

Keep in mind, I think he said that 2 of the wires were changed. So, the
end had to be replaced to make this happen. I believe later changed so that
the wires were swapped at the unit instead of changing the end.

Of course this might have been the issue for someone else completely, but
just thought I would bring it up as someone else might recall the exact
issue. (Might have been only on a 4 letter word gen)

Now that he has passed away, sadly, it would be nice to find a direct plug

Re: [neonixie-l] 7971 nixies sighted on Ebay

2014-05-15 Thread Michail1 via neonixie-l
Easy to sell for $750 for a set of 6. The bigger issue on ebay is if you
can trust the seller or not. And the fact that MOST of those auctions say
"as is" or "not tested". I do have to say that my favorite auction was the
one showing the crack and stating you only need to fix the crack and refill
 with gases. Heh.

Buy them and keep them for an investment. I would happily sell ya a set
of four for a Bitcoin.

Also, it's hard to appreciate that big clock until you have it in front of
you. You might just want one for each room. I mean, they all sync up to
the same GPS signal transmitter. I spent days running from room to room
seeing if the time was dead on accurate. Ok, JK.

I think there are people in this group that have the clocks for sale as
well. Half the fun and appreciation is building it yourself. :]

Wow! Did anyone check out those auctions? I saw a set of 6 for 750$ and

I'm all about cool stuff, I bought a bunch of Russian tubes to play
around with, but I'd have to REALLY want that clock with big digits pretty
badly
I think. But hey, if they can fetch those prices for the tubes then more
power to them. It's the amazing craziness of the free market (which also
produces crazy things like Aston kutcher making 700,000$ an episode for a
half hour comedy sitcom!)
