You can, but you'd be wrong :) In my (limited) experience, Linux is changing
every day, with new programs, patches, etc., so its just normal that a certain
number of packages appear in the 'updates' directory; I'd rather worry if it
wasn't so.

Is there anyone who can put together a little faq telling us what to do with
which of the 35 rpms and when?

Isn't there an 'Errata' page explaining what and why upgrade?

Yes the 2.2.9-27 seem to resolve but I prefer to use 2.2.7 older but more
stable (it' seem)

A few days ago I installed Mandrake 6.0 on my PC and it was an almost
completely painless installation, even for a newbie ;-))
However, sometimes I have a problem when shutting down - filesystems get
not cleanly unmounted - which causes some delay on next startup and may
 (??) lead to data loss.
From reading this list I understand this maybe associated with my
kernel-version (2.2.9-19mdk) and I saw some newer versions in the
 "updates" dir.

 My question is:

 a) would updating eliminate my problem

 b) if yes, how to do it, i.e. which files to download and how to proceed
 - I suppose this could not be done from a running system?!

I did my first install from hda (with some other os on it...) and
Mandrake lives on hdb, booting from diskette.

Any advice or FAQ out there?

Re: [newbie] Kernel 2.2.9-27mdk

1999-06-16 Thread Anonymous

 rpm -q -a | grep kernel

to see what kernel parts are installed so download the new rpms with the same
name (but number of verswion upgraded) and you have to download the initscripts
rpm too so do that

 rpm -Uvh

for all kernel rpms and iniscripts rpm too.

After you have to tell lilo that you have changed the kernel (I don't know how
because I use loadlin). In loadlin case you have to use new kernel linuz (see
at /boot/linuz) to boot

Does it come in rpm format? Can it be upgraded as easily as any other

 ls /usr/sbin/sndconfig

It aint't there... (I did a find... and didn't.)

If it's not there, install the sndconfig-0.33-2mdk.i586.rpm package from

Okay! But sndconfig needs playmidi and playmidi needs libvga.so.1 and

[newbie] Ide-scsi.o

1999-06-16 Thread Anonymous

Can someone shed some light on scsi emulation for me please ?

I offered to put together a howto-type web page on recompiling the kernel to
allow scsi emulation for stuff like cdroast. Before i did that i upgraded my
kernel to the latest 2.2.9-27mdk. I noticed there was a module called
'ide-scsi.o' in the scsi subdirectory of the modules.

So, i (wrongly perhaps) assumed that the whole idea of kernel recompilation
would be unnessary. I added 'alias scsi ide-scsi' into my conf.modules,
added 'hdc=ide-scsi hdd=ide-scsi' to the append statement in my lilo.conf,
reran lilo and rebooted.

Nothing. What did i mis ??

Surely i don't need to recompile just to tell the kernel to use the
precompiled module do i ??

Incidentally, if this will work, the machine that i really want to do this
on has an aha152x for my zip drive - is there anything else i need to do to
get the two 'scsi' adapters to co-exist.

If all else fails, i'll carry on with my web page on recompiling!!

Martin.

Try to take a look at your fstab and see if you can include the

[newbie] Please help with installation...

1999-06-16 Thread Anonymous

I am a newbie to this Linux thing. In the past I have used Win95, which I
feel comfortable with, but now I'am after a better, more stable OS. For this
I chose Mandrake 6.0.

My problem is installation, which I have spent the past 4-5 days trying to
accomplish, before I explain my problem I will give you a brief description
of my system, just in case it is something obvious that's wrong:

Cyrix 6x86 P150+
32 Mb RAM
2.1 Gb HD (master)
420 Mb HD (slave) - with old Windows files on (*.doc, .etc.)
Acer Acerview 33D monitor (14")
Atapi 4x CD-ROM
Soundblaster 16 sound card
56K clone modem
Scanner Interface card
HP Deskjet 690C
Diamond 3D 200 PRO graphics card
 I think that's about it

Anyway, I install virtually all of Mandrake, with a disk partition of 64Mb
swap and the rest native (/) on the 2.1Gb. The 420Mb is called "/dos" with
all my docs and stuff on.

I then configure the rest of the OS - printer, mouse, graphics, etc
After about an hour of installation, the time has come to reboot the
machine, so I take out all boot media... and log in as root.

This is when the problem arises. Sometimes all I get is a nice blue screen
with my cross in the middle - this doesn't go anywhere, so I have to reset,
which completey screws it all up and back to re-installing. Or, I can
get in, change permissions for all to shutdown the machine, logout and then
it crashes, so I have to reset, screwing it up again and back to
re-installing. Or, finally, I can get in and shutdown and then it dies on
me... What to do? It's getting a tad bring now, unfortunately!!

If I have to reset, and lucky enough to get back in, then I'm offered a
different "log-in Window", which doesn't allow me as many options, and I can
never get the original back!!

Could it be a problem with my BIOS? - I'm pretty sure it's set properly.
Hardware problem?
Installation problem?
Should I not boot into X?
A problem with me?!?!?!

I think I've tried everything now.

Cheers,

Andy

[newbie] HELP ME PLEASE with Mandrake 6.0 and my Iomega Internal ATAPI Zip Drive

1999-06-16 Thread Anonymous

hello,

i would like to know how to get my zip drive working on my system.

here is a list of the things i have done:

- installed Mandrake6 on a fresh pentium pro 200mhz, 72 mb RAM, creative
labs infra 1800 cd-rom, soundblaster16 sound card, generic 33.6 modem from
old compaq computer, ctx 1451es monitor, generic 3 button serial mouse, at
keyboard with ps/2 adapter, fic6010 motherboard, iomega internal atapi zip
drive 100mb, 2.0gig samsung hard drive

- during the install i was able to see the kernel detect my zip drive as
"hdb": it is a slave to my hard drive

- i tried to find the drive in the kde device manager (i am not sure what it
is called, i just know that i could mount and unmount different drives and
file systems through mount and unmount buttons) that shows which drives are
mounted: did not see "hdb" or any other similar device (i was also looking
for sdb possibly on account of some vague information gathered from various
internet sites, deja.com, ldp, etc.)

- i tried recompiling my kernel as instructed in the linux documentation
project's HOWTO on the zip drive

- i also followed the external link to the linuxgazette tip offered in the
HOWTO: this tip said to recompile the kernel with scsi support rather than
with the ide-atapi-floppy support (i did this using "make xconfig" "make
dep" "make clean" "make zImage" "make modules" "make modules_install" "make
zlilo")

- after rebooting, i still saw the "hdb" recognized as the internal zip
drive, but no scsi device detection as the tip suggested

- i have recompiled the kernel about 10 times now trying to find the correct
options for the detection of the drive as a scsi device that i can mount and
eject disks from (the linuxgazzette tip suggested doing it this way so that
one could use some "eject" utility that would keep one from damaging the
drive due to improper unmounting)

- i have nothing important on the system as yet, and am willing to reinstall
if there is a way to do things from the installation

- i have not made a mount point yet due to the fact that i couldn't find the
drive anywhere

i will not be upset if i am told that the fix is relatively easy, i would
just like to use the programs i downloaded onto the disks i have.

many thanx,
michael

Go with a tnt2 based card with 32 megs) You dont need to spend the
extra 50 - 100 bucks 4 a tnt2 ultra unless your processor is about 450
or mor (I am guessing not.) Look on the web and youll see im right
per4mance value) If you dont have approx 150 2 spend then just go
with a tnt card (still great performance.) Egghead.com is going to have
the tnt (stb velocity 4400) for 60 bucks soon EXTREME DEAL!! bye4now

Never had a problem with Matrox cards here...

I'm currently using a TNT based card. (mainly for playing games in Win98 - but
the high res and stability in X is a damned GoodThing(tm)) I am running it at
1280x1024x32bit. (in X) And it's nice. High freq - solid picture.

However, for hassle free VGAs, Matrox (as Bernhard, said) is very well
supported. The other one I can safely recommend if you are on a tight budget is
the S3 Virge/DX based cards. Hassle free. (better hold off the Savage4 ones for
now since there's no X server for it yet...IIRC, that is.)
