Re: [newbie] failing to unmount

If you go to the updates page of the Mandrake site it has a blurb on this bug.

Everyone should be updating their kernel to 2.2.9-27 anyway because of a
security bug... but this as well as the initscripts is what is needed to
fix the unmount bug..

I have that bug as well.. I have updated initscripts.. I need to download
and update the kernel now.. OH NO!! LOL!! hopefully I wont bugger up my system

For those that have been following my saga... I now have a working modem
and sound card.. YE HA! I have mounted both my windoze partitions on Linux
to get access to all my pics and other files.

So the sun is a little brighter on my mandrake 6.0 install.

I don't really agree with this. The SBLive is a blinding card, and it just
depends on your requirements. I mainly (still) use Windows for gaming, which
lets face it is the only place where I personally need the SBLive's

Lets be fair here, the cards aren't ready for Windows without obtaining the
whole host of upgrades from creative either !!

The sound card works admirably under Linux, installs easily (despite plenty
of emails asking for help - the solution is dead easy), and allows me to get
system sounds under X, play my CD's, listen to MP3s, and use the Mixer.

OK, so I've picked up a PCI512. Pulled the plug and installed the card (why do
these things come with covers anyway?) had three minutes and tried a quick and
dirty sndconfig from linux 1. Well it couldn't find the card so i tried a
couple of SB examples and nuttin' honey. Now the modem doesn't work (connects
but won't access any site - arghhh). I recall someone posting a couple of files
that needed to be edited but i don't recall which or what to edit. Any help ??
Don't really feel like reinstalling this just because i can't fix it with a
simple edit. Also still looking for some help with update / install of the
 proper SB files.

Think PCI512 = Live!

With this in mind, Creative isn't being very supportive of Linux for their
Live! series of sound cards.

Their ISA sound cards plus the PCI64/PCI128 should work okay in Linux.

Excuse the delay in giving a return your message. I went to the place

I read the configurations for Umax and, finally, I understood what was
the scsi genric card. I thought that was a module to be carried by the
kernel, but, actually, it is the form like Sane works with the scsi
card of Umax. I followed the recommendations and, finally, my scanner
worked in Linux Mandrake. I only need, now, to find the best options of
configuration of the card. In fact, I take advantage of to ask somebody
that has the same scanner could send me the options used to configure
it, it would abbreviate the time I spend with the attempts.
I thank your help a lot, as the one of the other companions that

 they show is
  insmod g_NCR5380 ncr_irq=255 ncr_addr=0x280 dtc_3181e=1
You may have to play around with the ncr_addr part. They list a whole bunch
of IO addresses the controller card can use.

My install is still on kernel 2.2.9-19mdk, so the directories in the

If you've done that, i'll assume you know enough to just follow the
following...

http://www/whitem.demon.co.uk/sblive.htm

The file referred to from Creative's site is 'emu10k1-0.3b.tar.gz'.

The instructions were in response to a previous post when the latest version

so i assume they work (i have given the URL out quite a few times now).

If they don't, can someone tell me why and i'll try and correct the

they do!!). Obviously if resources are conflicting with modems and stuff,
that might be a different matter altogether. Give it a go and let me know

i am trying to install some new software by compiling source. when i
run the configure script that comes with the source, it checks for
several things. one of the things it checks for is whether i have gcc,
then it says ok. next it says 'checking whether c compiler worksno'
then it wont continue compilation. is there more configuration that
needs to happen for (p)gcc to work? i am trying to run it 'out of the
box'.

The PCI16 is a rebadged Ensonique (from what I saw when we were selling
them). To me it seems as though Creative bought Ensonique as they were
falling behind in the PCI sound card race, needed to get one released.

I have the SB Live! (full, not value). The only small problem I have is
that the Creative modules only support 2.2.5 2.2.10 AFAIR. I have
checked the Linux-Mandrake site, but they do not have 2.2.10 listed as
an upgrade kernel version. I have copy of the full 2.2.10 kernel source
curtsey of PC Plus. Can I use this to upgrade/replace the version
supplied with Linux-Mandrake PowerPack? I used to run RH6 (for two
weeks) had my SB Live! running under that, so I know it works. Any
guidance on upgrading to kernel version 2.2.10? I know that there is a
2.2.11 version now available, but I need 2.2.10

 Think PCI512 = Live!

With this in mind, Creative isn't being very supportive of Linux for their

Their ISA sound cards plus the PCI64/PCI128 should work okay in Linux.

If they don't, can someone tell me why and i'll try and correct the

[newbie] PPA?

I unfortunately have a HP 722c printer. I am trying to install ppa. I
downloaded ppa to my home directory, extracted the archive, changed
directories, and compiled the program (to the best of my knowledge). There are
still some files I need to add.
I have some questions though. It said to copy the file to the /usr/local/src
directory before all that was done. I have tried several things;
/home/Don/ppa.0.8.6.tar.gz cp /usr/local/src , I have cd directories to
/usr/local then typed cp ppa-0.8.6.tar.gz and a whole host of other things and
ways with no success. So if there is anyone out there who has successfully
installed ppa I would appreciate some help. Also how does it work. Do you have
to issue a print command from the konsole? Can you use the print command from
the pull down menu? How does Ghostscript come into play? Could I just leave it
in my /home/Don directory? And finally what files do I need to add and more
importantly how.
As you can see I am very confused so any help would be greatly
appreciated.

ThanksDon

Re: [newbie] Uninstalling PAM

1999-08-23 Thread Civileme

Well, what will you substitute?

You can run without authentication those things capable of running without
authentication by
starting

LILO Boot: linux 1

You might want to drag stuff over to runlevel 1 with the Sys V editor and
see what will work.

Windows 9x is set up to run with bolt-on authentication, and it has many
applications written by Microsoft that *depend* on access to the core
operating system. You have seen the results, I imagine. A new exploit
every few days, and $7.6 BILLION in the first 6 months of 1999, attributable
to the use of those exploits, in business losses. Running Windows 9x
connected to the internet is just *begging* to be cracked.

But, just as Office 97 is bound to the Windows Op systems very tightly, so
is PAM to Linux. If you have other authentication modules to substitute,
the source code is available to hook 'em in in place of PAM, and I suppose
you could recompile with PAM excluded as well. Might be a task of large
proportions to find and eradicate the whole set of hooks.

And if you did, something like the bliss virus would be far more capable
against your system than it is now.

I apologize for the previous boisterous response to your inquiry, but I
really want you to know PAM is there for a reason, and is looked for by many
services, resources, processes, etc.

So the effect of eliminating PAM would be either that you are denied access
to many things completely or that you have little or no protection from
anyone you might be connected to.

Re: [newbie] Uninstalling PAM

1999-08-23 Thread Civileme

How to make it clear? PAM has been around long enough that many things
depend on it. If you don't have it, every program will have the default
level of security the vendor gave it and it will be pretty immutable.

So, if you don't like it, you have to deal with the mass of software that
expects it with something else, or not use any of that software. Certainly,
if you find fellow travelers who don't like pam, there is room for a project
to develop something better.

But uninstall it? That would be rather problematic.

Re: [newbie] Using KPP to log into an NT Server

1999-08-23 Thread Civileme

Well, the flavor of the server platform should not matter if it supports dial-in
access

The authentication procedure followed is another matter. That is part of the login
which should be accomplished to
establish a connection from the server.

Kppp supports the frequently used protocols chat script and PAP. There is also a very
high security protocol called
CHAP. You will need to use the same protocol that your NT box expects. As Microsoft
would say, "Contact your System
Administrator".

Or just try them to see which one connects.

I do assume you have an account on the NT box for dialup and that you have used
dialups before from another platform. If
this is not true, then you will need to make sure the appropriate work is done at your
NT box.

I don't believe XFree86 (3.3.3.1 or 3.3.4) supports the Savage 4 chip. When
3.3.5 comes out (soon) I believe it is expected to support the #4.

I've bought a savage4 but I haven't installed it in my daughters computer.
I'm not sure there are drivers for linux yet. I upgraded my computer from a
viper 330 to a matrox G-200. I bought the matrox for $29. It is an agp card
and works great with linux. I've had no problems at all with it and the
quality of the graphics is outstanding. I've upgraded it to 16 meg. Linux
picked it right up and installed it with no problem. I'm running it in an asus
ss7 p5a with an amd KIII 450. The matrox has my recommendation and is a card
 you should consider.

[newbie] Getting Real Audio to work phase II

I believe I've got the real player G2 installed right. I downloaded a wav file

and netscape configured to auto load the programs when I click on them.
Will the G2 player work with Netscape 4.6 or do I need to go to 4.61?

Has anyone successfully configured the G2 player? If so what are your
preference settings for proxy and connections?

I've configured netscape navigator to launch realplayer when a real media link
is clicked using the instructions from realplayers web site but I can't get it
to work. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

You are right about that. Since I didn't have any ISA cards before I

script didn't have the isapnp.conf script to feed iaspnp.

 modprobe videodev.o
 modprobe radio-cadet.o io=0x330

just put them in /etc/conf.modules

Now if i'm remebering correctly, when something requests v4l the kernel
will autoload videodev, then radio-cadet.

This part didn't work. I still had to run modprobe at the root CLI
prompt to get the card to tune to my favorite FM station. No big
deal. I can put it in rc.local, I have already stuck a few things in
there for my IDE CD-R.

I couldn't find any information on /etc/conf.modules. Do you have any
recommendations on a good book for Linux or Unix System
Administration? I found "A Practical Guide to Linux" by Mark Sobell
to be good for using Linux but it is a light on the Administration
side.

Thanks,

The io=0x330 I got from digging into the source code of radio-cadet.

So where do I stick the three lines above? I assume that it goes into
rc.local right? Well I am learning a few things about Linux and
trying to remember enough C to figure it out what the HOWTOs don't
 cover.

Yes you could also modprobe from rc.local

No problem, let me know if the conf.modules doesn't work and i'll dig out

think seriously that pam provides more security to your system .. please!
security goes WAY WAY WAY beyond your password suite type. I admit that

other than that, no, pam doesnt provide any security increase. Yes i did

Can you be specific with some of the error messages you are getting when

To re-run lilo you run '/sbin/lilo' at the command prompt as root. And
yes, it does matter if you put Lilo in the mbr. Having Lilo in the mbr
allows you to run a multiple boot system.

Absolutely Not. There are substitutes for PAM. How has unix evolved
these 30 some years w/o it? What about shadow and md5? or just shadow
and des? or just plain des for that matter. I dont care if
   i dont have a
/etc/shadow file. However, i do not like having a ton of extra system
calls for something that used to be done in one step. Pam is
   a waste. It
is not an increase in security by any means. It is simply a
   name placed
on something, a buzzword if you will. Slackware linux doesnt have it.
Redhat used to not have it. Many many many distributions
   dont have it. I
dont see how you can get off comparing the lack of PAM on
   your system to
running a version of the OS produced in Redmond Washington. It is
absurdity. Next time i dont think i will use Mandrake linux
   or Redhat or
any other linux 'buzzword' distribution as i am using now -
   it is because
of crap like this that i have to put up with. All i want to
   know is what
steps do i need to go through in order to rid my system of PAM. Yes i
know that many systems were compiled and linked to its library. Yes i
know that many many packages for mandrake 6 depend on it.
   But is there a
package i can download to replace the packages that were compiled and
linked to PAM and replace also the PAM package itself with a standard
   password suite.

If I am wrong in my thinking that PAM is not a security
   increase over a
standard shadowed password suite with md5 encrypting please
   correct me.
But as I understand it, all PAM does is check to see if the calling
program is 'validated' per say to access the password suite.
   This is a
waste.. it should and IS handled all at filesystem level with only
allowing certain users (root) readable and writeable access to certain
files (/etc/shadow). Sure, If you are a complete moron and
   make the file
writeable or even readable by a user other than the
   superuser.. then you
might need PAM.. otherwise.. its a waste. I hope i made my
   point clear.

[newbie] Mandrake 6.0 Install Problems

1999-08-23 Thread Gabriel Fernández

Dear all:

I am a Slackware user, but I have heard so many good things about Read

experience . . .

My machine is configured as follows:

Pentium 75MHz
64MB RAM

ide1 @ 0x170-0x177, 0x376 on irq 15 (serialized with ide0)

hdc: ATAPI 24X CD-ROM DVD-RAM CD-R/RW drive, 2048KB Cache
Partition check:
hda: hda1, hda2, hda3
hdb: hdb1, hdb2

I have Windows 95 and Slackware Linux currently installed. The first
hard drive has a partition for Windows 95 and two partitions for Linux
(/swap and /). The second hard drive has one partition for Windows 95
(mounted under Linux) and a partition for Linux (/usr). Everything works
fine so far . . .

When I tried installing Mandrake 6.0, I was under the impression that the
installation would take care of deleting or repartition the hard drives.
However, this is not the case.

After the installation type is selected and the kernel is loaded. I see
a message "Running install..." and everything hangs.

When I check with ALT-F4, I can see the following error messages:

VFS: mounted root (ext2 filesystem)
hdb: lost interrupt
hdb: drive_cmd: status=0x58 {DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest}
 status error: status 0x58 {DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest}
hdb: drive not ready for command

hdc: cdrom_pc_intr: The drive appears confused (ireason=0x1)
hdc: lost interrupt:
hdc: cdrom_pc_intr: The drive appears confused (ireason=0x1)
...

I do not understand why the hard drives are used and mounted correctly
with Windows 95 and Slackware.

   Do you have any ideas?

   Thanks,

Gabriel

Re: Ethernet Efficiency was[newbie] 10/100 Ethernet?

1999-08-23 Thread Civileme

25Meg = 25 x 1024 x 1024 x 8 bits = 209715200 bits= minimum transfer time of about
20.97 seconds Now that doesn't include all the packet headers, but we are
showing a healthy 66% or therabouts with a 30 second transmission.

But was that two machines linked with nothing else on? What happens when it's
multiple? The 40% figure is from IBM, but I agree that it approaches that limit as
the number of machines (and collisions) increase and also as the packets vary in
number of octets (smaller packets require the same number of header octets as
larger ones.) It is ethernet plus TCP/IP that yields the 40% figure. I frankly
don't know enough about other protocols to guess at a calculation. Ethernet
itself, well, I don't think we can talk about a communication technology for
computer to computer without involving a message protocol.

Anyway, thank you for the data.

you don't need to change LILO to default to DOS. Just change the boot
manager you are using to default to DOS.

If I am wrong, I hope someone will correct me. :-)

Tada, guess who's beeen paying attention. ;) Nice job Rick

To re-run lilo you run '/sbin/lilo' at the command prompt as root.
 And
yes, it does matter if you put Lilo in the mbr. Having Lilo in
 the mbr
allows you to run a multiple boot system.

I don't know what it means to rerun lilo after editing?
 Explain. Also, does
it matter whether or not I put lilo in my MBR or not during
 installation of
 linux 6.0?
because I didn't do that. I put it on my linux hard drive
 instead of the dos
 hard drive (my MBR).

 right above the
   label=dos line?

Opps, hit send and forgot to mention. You will need to
 rerun lilo
 after
the edit

"You will need to rerun lilo after the edit" you did this?

The very top line, of your lilo.conf says something like?
  default=dos
