I have a HP DeskJet 500 b&w printer attached to my LPT1 (DOS) paralell port. It
was detected and installed wothout a wrinkle. Now I must admit that this is an
older printer, but it is still a paralell printer, so there are at least some
that work ok.

1999-12-25 Thread Ken Wilson

I am going to hazard a couple of guesses here. One is it is more than
likely written in C. The second is that the files you want to view
follow the standard Unix convention for text files and have only a
single linefeed/carriage return (can never remember exactly which one it
is, might even be an EOL) and not the carriage return/linefeed
combination used in a windows world.

Sad to say, the term "soft" in your modem's moniker is a dead givaway if the
"PCI" isn't. I am afraid that you have what is called a "win modem", and this
is not good if you wish to connect with Linux. The problem is that a part of
the modem's hardware is emulated in software. Windows supports this rather
cheap method of manufacturing, but Linux does not (at least to my knowlege).
Others may be better informed on this issue, but my suggestion is to get either
an external modem, or an internal device which allows you to manually set the
COM port on which it will run with jumpers, and will plug into an ISA port.
Be quite specific with the sales person that you want a modem which is
compatible with Linux, and that it can not be a "winmodem" or any similar
device. There are a few names under which these modems are sold, but never
having owned one, I cannot be as helpfull as I would like to be.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings,

[newbie] probs w/ installation

1999-12-25 Thread Ernesto Bartels (Yahoo profile)

after mandrake 6.1 installation I have found some annoying probs.
firstly, linux only boots up from the disk (rescue disk?) because I put
the option "boot from primary partition" or something like that when
installing, since my HD is 13.6gb, and yes my /boot partition was on the
6gb and under part.
#2 prob. when I start KDE (or xwin , not sure) by typing startx the
mouse gets all weird... it transforms itself into a box... if I move it
around the screen it comes back to a normal pointer though.
#3 prob. I can not read anything on KDE: yes I truly hate this, I can't
read anything, there seems to be something covering the words (on
everything)- like a black box you see on tv programs that are too
graphical.
#4 prob. linux tells me that there is some mounting problem when it
starts???
#5 prob. the windows 98 icon for drive D changed, which is ok, but
programs such as scan disk doesn't recognize it.
I really want to run linux... please help me! What should I do!?! I am
using the same drivers used in windows 98 for the video card - sis 5597

Re: [newbie] Installation without cdrom player

1999-12-25 Thread Toyswins

A few questions:

1. How old is older? Depending on the hardware, it might be easier to
use an older version such as the 5 vice 6 series of Red Hat. Also, you
need to check how much drive space is needed and if it's available.
Best bet is to check out the HOWTO series and the text files with the
distribution you have. It'll tell you what is absolutely necessary and
what is good to have in the way of hardware, disk space, etc. Given
that you've covered those bases you should be okay to continue.

2. If you don't have a CD reader, what is the format of your LINUX
installation? If it's floppy, then fine, if you've got a CD then you'll
have to get the files onto the correct media first. How did you make
the disk you have in the first place? If you downloaded this and it's
on a Windows partition, you'll have to ensure that once you've booted to
the Linux kernel you can actually get to the files.

3. The bootable disks are normally made as a pair. To boot the kernel
you need to make 2 disks. Check out the details of what you're reading
and it should walk you through the process.

The basics are as follows:

(I have to assume you have access to the RAWRITE program.) Go to the
DOSUTILS directory / folder and start the program RAWRITE. When
prompted for the file enter BOOT.IMG and it'll ask for the location.
Enter your floppy drive, probably A:. RAWRITE puts the image onto the
disk and sends you back to your DOS prompt. The supplemental disk, the
second one, is made in the same way and the image is SUPP.IMG. These
two floppies will allow you to boot a basic Linux system completely from
floppies and can be helpful in troubleshooting later problems.

When you reboot with the boot floppy, you'll get a lot of data scrolling
on the screen which is the kernel loading up. You have to take it from
there to actually install the files on your hard drives. You need to
partition in the correct format and so forth.

Hope this helps.

Hmm...have you made sure you're entering it the same way you created
it? Keep in mind that upper case and lower case are different in

Re: [newbie] Suggestions

1999-12-25 Thread M Thompson

You have encountered the 1024th cylinder boundry. LILO and the initial
Linux boot files must reside below the 1024th cylinder (first 7.88GB of the
hard disk). The /boot directory contains these files. You should create a
small Linux partition (20Mb is plenty) and mount it as /boot. Create that
20Mb partition first so that it resides around the 6Gb mark. Checkout
http://www.mandrakeuser.org/install/ipartit.html#Linux for suggestions on
the rest of your partitions.

To reinstall (completely), just run the same installation process again
(just putting the boot.img disk in).

[newbie] Suggestions

1999-12-25 Thread Ernesto

Merry christmas to everybody.
I would like some suggestions.
I have a 13.6gb drive. I am using around 6gb. in 3 win partitions. The
rest of the space I would like to use for linux. So I tried to use all
of the 7 gigs in the root - "/", but disk druid would not let me, the
max I think was 1860MB. So I would like some suggestions on how I should
manage the 7 gigs for linux. I would like to keep the 3 win partitions
intact if possible. Could some one give a suggestion for the following:
*size of root - which I think should contain /etc, /bin, /sbin, /lib,
and /dev
*size of any of the others and how I should mount them
I have 92 MB of RAM (4 for on-board video card)
I also would like to know how to mount them on disk druid... I know that
root is simply "/", but what about say... /usr, do I write "/usr" or
"/usr/"???
Also can I change the size later - or mount things in different places?
and lastly - to reinstall (completely), can I just run the same
installation process again (just putting the boot.img disk in)?
Thank you very much.
Happy holidays
Ernesto Bartels.

[newbie] Root Password Problem

1999-12-25 Thread Toyswins

I just started my "experimental" Linux box and discovered that it
doesn't like my password. I can go in as my alternate user, and after
successfully logging in, type in "su" then the root password and it
works just fine. I then changed the root password via passwd logged out
and tried again. Still no luck.

There was a thread earlier I think about some versions having problems
in this area. I'm using Red Hat Linux 6.0, Mandrake 2.2.9-19 mdk,
compiled 5/19/99 19:53 GMT.

Please tell me this is a problem with my version and to go get something
newer. When you do tell me this, (I hope!), where's the best place,
(Red Hat Mandrake site?), and which version is stable? By the way, I
understand the 2.2.9 but not the -19. What's that for? There's nothing
in the HOWTOs I've been able to find on the numbering scheme that far
down.

Thanks and Merry Christmas to all. Now to put up my home electronic
weather station Santa got me..and where was that serial cable?

Not sure about your 1000, but many canon BJ's do work w/Linux. You may have
to use a driver from another model.
Merry Christmas and Good Luck w/the printer

[newbie] Printers

I just got a new printer for Christmas. Are there any printers that have been
known to cause problems or just not work with Linux? I received a Canon Bubble

Thanks.

What is the URL for the Mandrake 7.0 ISO? I found directories, but no ISO

That's a "software modem" or "winmodem". It will NOT work with Linux. Get an
external. Or you can also get an ISA internal modem. Most PCI modems are
winmodems.
