Re: [newbie] Instant Messenger

2000-01-08 Thread Werner Niebel

Eric,
My suggestion is to use GAIM... It works well and configuration is minimal...I
have few thoughts if you dont mind me adding to the already many responses.
I like to use RPMs. I usually can download these by one of two
ways in addition to linuxberg(tucows). Try www.freshmeat.net.
THis is usually very up to date in terms of versions(Use tucows to get
ratings)...Freshmeat has homepage links as well... In addition I use the
RPM site
http://rufus.w3.org/linux/RPM/gaim.html
This has an incredible RPM database and organizes the RPMs according
to Processor (intel, alpha, etc) and distribution (Redhat, Mandrake)...
I also create an RPMs dir so that I have a record of all RPMs installed
after installing linux
Hope this helps... GAIM works well speaking from personal experience.

Re: [newbie] vnc

2000-01-08 Thread Werner Niebel

I have had the same problem forest... I posted a similar message on the
expert board... My speculation is this .. Maybe a problem in one of the
Mandrake libs... I tried seeing if there were updates for the libs vnc
uses... I also tried compiling vnc native and it crashes a lot... Im at a
loss... It used to work in Redhat 6.0 like a champ.

Did you try editing the xstartup file in the .vnc directory... My problem
has been that kde and windowmaker both crash...Ill post some suggestions if
you have already tried this.

[newbie] long time to start smb

Hi,

I appologize if I have posted this before.

During the install, I configure the system to start smb
as part of all of the startup processes. When the loader/
launcher gets to smb, it seems to take forever. What
could cause this?

Thanks,

Re: [newbie] Please help me find the right VideoCard.

2000-01-08 Thread forest

Also alot of the video cards that are "supported" on this list at
Linux-mandrake and
xfree, might not be fully suported with mandrake, or be "fully"
suported. So please
try not to substitute to a lower priced card that it says is compatable.
I know on my
linux systems I have had alot of luck with the Diamond V770, Power Color
TNT2,
i740 (newer xfree though) However I have had a real heck of a time with
the cheaper
sis 6326, and the S3 Trio cards that are said to be supported. The power
Color tnt2
cards only cost me 70ish bucks, and that 32 megs and it looks sharp.

you will have to deal with in linux, (NIC's are good

As well as a link on that page to XFree86 site

Look up the various video cards on the list's and you
will see that The ATI 128 Rage chipset does not have
support yet, I am not sure which Diamond card you
have, but they have been very supportive in the past
regarding Linux, You might just have a configuration
problem there with the Diamond card. Hope this helps.

[newbie] Device is locked.....

2000-01-08 Thread Spiffy1two

Yesterday, I was having troubles when telnetting into my Linux box. I tried
using Minicom, and Minicom reported that I couldn't use it, and to ask my
system administrator for access or something. Surprisingly, I am the
sysadmin. So how do I enable other accounts to use it?

Later, I don't remember what account (mine or root) it was on, but Minicom
reported something like "device modem is locked". Sometime later I tried
again, and Minicom reported that the lockfile was out of date and let me in.
But what are lockfiles important for, and what should I do in case this would
happen in the future?

First off you need to set your Groupwise client to word-wrap. Many of
us are using clients which don't wrap incoming messages very well.
The "standard" is 70-75 characters per line. :-)
Second, what video card do you have? I'm guessing it's one of the
ones for which you need to add the "noaccel" line in your
/etc/XF86Config file. This typically takes care of that problem. I'd
suggest going and viewing the archives for this list. You can find
the link to the archives at www.linux-mandrake.com
Good luck!

Re: [newbie] How to Dial up

2000-01-08 Thread Hidong Kim

What does your /etc/resolv.conf look like? It should have the name of
your isp and the ip addresses of their nameservers. Mine has three
lines:

search nwrain.com
nameserver 205.134.220.38
nameserver 205.134.220.37

nwrain.com is my isp. The next two lines are the primary and secondary
nameservers. Also, set the permission on /etc/resolv.conf to 644. Good
luck,

[newbie] Upgrading Linux-Mandrake to 6.1

2000-01-08 Thread Steven P Hull

I have a successful installation of Linux-Mandrake 6.0 on my machine but
I would like to upgrade the operating system to 6.1. I upgraded the LM
upgrade file to 6.1 then went to see what would/could be upgraded by
this method. I got quite a few files but when it came to the Kernel
2.2.13 upgrade it would quit stating there was an error. Also when I
tried to upgrade Netscape 4.61 to 4.7 it stated I needed further
libraries such as Compat-glibc and Compat-libs. Gimp stated I needed
libaa.so.1.

Where do I get these to complete the installations???

Inorder to mount a Fat32 partition, FAT32 Support has to be compiled
into your kernel. edit your /etc/fstab file add an entry for what ever
partition is your fat32 partition ie /dev/hda1 /mnt/windrive vfat
defaults 0 0 if you add that to your fstab next time you reboot it
should automatically be mounted.

I'm trying to install Mandrake 6.1 on a computer with no cd-rom, with
only 8mb of ram, and the install stops at the loading of the second
stage ramdisk. I've also been desparate enough to try redhat 6.0 on it,
and it dies at exactly the same place. It seems to retrieve the image,
as the cd-rom on the server goes, but stops on the loading.
