[newbie] LM7.2 questions about telnet and webmin

2001-01-31 Thread Fireman71

I was gifted with an old comp from work and tried installing LM7.2 on it.
Everything during the install and all post install configuration went fine.

Started playing around with it since this is the only machine that i have
7.2 on (my others are running 7.1) and ran into a few snags.

The biggest one is that i cannot telnet into the box at all from anywhere. I
cant even telnet localhost. When i try it reports:

{fireman}$ telnet localhost
Trying 127.0.0.1...
telnet: Unable to connect to remote host: Connection refused

So i am assuming that there is some security setting somewhere that is
stopping me. Anyone have any ideas where or what it might be and how i can
turn it off?

Things i have checked so far:
/etc/inetd.cont -- the telnet line is uncommented here and looks correct
/etc/hosts.deny -- nothing in here except for commented out lines
/etc/hosts.allow -- same as above
ipchains -L -- no rules and all policiesset to accept
security level -- set to medium

Thanks in advance,

That what theme manager does. It installs the themes. All you have to do

Any hint on filters? I'm using S450 which I've read is really a BJC-6000

the format from the word processor through the printing process. So any info

 manually before.

the sanity they were born with while they're still under the age of 80!

Please don't get me wrong. I think Cups is a good thing...as long as
you're not using, or trying to use a Canon printer. Where HP is concerned
you can't beat Cups with a stick. Not even a pair of sticks. Drum sticks
that is...and you know who you are!

Anyway, I firgure it this way. Those of us that are hell bent on sticking
with our Canon printers are just going to have to stick with using Lpr
until Mandrake version 8.1 is in full release. That would be at least by
Summer 2002 easy. By then Cups should be a killer printer support
platform. ACtually I think Canon should have stuck with making Cameras and
never gotten into the printer market. And I should have my head examinded
  for friggin buying one.

After this it will be HP for me...or an Epson. Now THOSE are printers.

O, and by the way. You can very easily and quickly install a printer using
Linuxconf to print with Lpr. Only thing is you have to make sure that
Cups, Qtcups, Kups and anything else C,K-ups in it is totally uninstalled
from the system before you will be able to install and use a printer with
LPR. That just da way it is.

  rpm -qa | grep cups

Issue the above command in a terminal to see if you have Cups of any kind
installed on the system. This will catch qtcups as well. then issue this
command to uninstall those packages from the system.

rpm -e -force package-name *use the -force argument only if
  necessary

   *where package-name is place
the name of the package listed
from the rpm query.

   *package name MUST entered exactly
as it appears in the output

  rpm -qa |grep Kups

Do everything for Kups packages that you did for Cups packages. The
procedure is the same. Then Open Linuxconf-Miscellaneous
  services-Printer-Add/Edit printers-Add.

You will be prompted to create a printer when you do you will then define
that printers properties. When you click on that printers name in the
little box you can further define that printer. There is a panel with 3
tabs across the top. On the first tab you define the max file size. On the
second tab you choose the device:

  /dev/lp0
  /dev/lp1
  /dev/lp2
  custom

Lp0 is the typical and default choice. 3 and last tab is where you choose
the printers filters, resolution, paper size, and quality. The most
important of these though is the filter. Choose the wrong filter and you
  won't see your printer printing...anything!

That's really all there is to setting up print services using Lpr and
Linuxconf. Quick...cool...and clean! And the friggin thing works with my
  Canon!!!

When you do that, you will get a Lilo prompt. Just log into linux as root

does anyone know what could cause this to happen...

Re: [newbie] hosts.allow Question Clarification

2001-01-31 Thread Meph Istopheles

  Hey,

I have a few friends whom I share access to their linux boxes
and in return I give them access to mine... it's a tit for tat
thing. If I want to block everyone except certain IP's, how
 can I do that?

While the previous post will get you what you're after under
most circumstances, there might be trouble on occasion. I'd
searched searched till I'd found an example on the Web which
has simply not failed me.

  For hosts.allow:

#allow everything inside of the network a few select others
ALL: LOCAL, .yourdomain.com, 165.22.8.112, 207.109.85.60

#Give myself some access points in case DNS gets fucked
in.telnetd: xxx.xx.xxx.xx
in.telnetd: 207.109.85.60
in.telnetd: 165.22.8.112
in.ftpd: xxx.xx.xxx.xx
in.ftpd: xxx.xx.xxx.xx
in.ftpd: 207.109.85.60
in.ftpd: 165.22.8.112

Here, ALL indicates (basically) that anyone attempting
is allowed, but LOCAL means that any with my domain (which
is listed) two specific ip's (boxes I use at work) can
access. But even if someone spoofed my domain, they'd still have
to have a legitimate ip address (one of which is indicated where
I have the x's), followed by each of those boxes at work which
are allowed telnet ftp (though I can kill the telnet now I have
ssh working).

  For hosts.deny:

ALL: ALL

This is what's called the paranoid set up. It tells the system
that everyone is to be kept out unless there are specific entries
in hosts.allow.

Give this one a shot. And yes, you can use partial domains
ip's -- just remember that if it's the second part (like
yahoo.com) you have to lead it off with a . (so, .yahoo.com, or
like near the end like 207.109.85.).

Yeah no kidding.

And winprinters are rotten to the core and all through to the other
side, I wish they did not exist, along with wimpblowdumbs (winmodems).

I hope that Canon is not planning to make any winprinters if they
have not already, and I agree with your statement on Canon,
they should have stuck with making cameras, my dad has a great
Canon AE1 camera and the photos it can take blew me away,
well that was back in the 70's-80's but still sure is a nice

Sorry if this was covered in an earlier post but 2 questions reguarding your sustem.

How was your Matrox card set-up during installation, what driver and which version of
X?
Does your MOBO have onboard vid. and is it jumppered to disabled?

The symptons/lockup you describe indicate a problem in the X system.
Just as a test try running your system at 600x800 60mhz and 16bit color to see if you
still encounter the same system abnomalities.

 The @home

I think when it was installed last year they told me they had to use a

Yes, I did change the driver as I mentioned:
"Incidentally, I did change the "nv" to "nvidia" in
the driver portion."

Still no luck for me. Did you happen to receive the
warning messages when you compiled your
NVIDIA_kernel-0.9-6??? They were:

"/tmp/ccvvfRE1.s: Assembler messages:
/tmp/ccvvfRE1.s:9: Warning: Ignoring changed section

Does anyone know what that means?

I'll try installing a 2.4 kernel tonight then and see
how that works out for me.

Any ideas are GREATLY appreciated.

If I remember correctly, they are for the 2.4.0
 kernel. (They got
 released
like two days after I used a patch for the 0.9-5

 so...)
If your using 2.2.17 or 2.2.18, and don't have the

 should
probably try the 0.9-5 drivers. If you have an

[newbie] 7.1 - 7.2 upgrade hangs at stage 1 on reboot

2001-01-31 Thread Big G

Hello all,

I had a working Mandrake 7.1 installation on an older
Dell XPS200 Pentium Pro system using SCSI disks and
ReiserFS.

The 2 CD upgrade to 7.2 seemed to go fine (although it
took hours) then it was time to reboot. I removed the
CD, rebooted, my SCSI stuff was detected, "stage 1"
(from Grub, I believe) prints to the screen, and there
it sits. I've left it at that point overnight and
nothing else happened so it is definately hung. One
might say, "well hung".

I restarted the install, got to the point that my
disks were mounted and checked out etc/boot/.
Everything appeared to be pointed to the right disks
and so forth, but that was my first time in that
directory so I could have missed something.

What's up? The archives haven't revealed anything to
me. It's bad enough my primary workstation is a PPro
200, but at least it worked. Oh the humanity...

TIA,
-G

[newbie]Vmware installation in 7.2

2001-01-31 Thread marcia

Dear All, I have LM 7.2 and I would like to install the vmware 2.00 I
purchased a month or so ago. I tried a couple of times before but had
some problems probably from my lack of knowledge. I do not want to crash
my system again with this. That happened during my first attempt and it
would be very inconvenient this time aroumd.

My husband just got a new job which requires using Excel. I have it but
need Windows 95 for it which is why I want to get the vmware installed.
Personally, I would like him to use the spreadsheet from StarOffice or
Gnumeric which may work well enough for him I do not know. If it
doesn't he will want EXCEl immediately so I want to be prepared. His new
job starts Feb.19 and he wants to be practicing as soon as possible.

Will I need to upgrade my LM 7.2 first or acquire some files that are
not supplied with 7.2 first? Any of your suggestions or help will be
greatly appreciated. Thank you very much. Marcia

Better run it as root also.

You must install it; it is in the second Mandrake 7.2 disk
(sndconfig.rpm); rpm -i sndconfig.rpm and then you can run it from a
console or, better, non graphic screen
