Barbara OK well the easy way is to bring up an xterm any old time and type telinit 3 or if you want to leave the screen running, just use ctrl-alt-f2 or f3-f6 and you will have a real console ready to log in. ctrl-alt-F7 takes you back to the screen and leaves the console running. You can make an at-boot change by clicking on DrakConf=linuxconf and changing the runlevel. If you come up in 3, to get to 5 you can use startx (Windowmanager name) or startx or init 5 or xinit (window or xterminal name) The last is very interesting--I booted, told lilo linux 3 # BTW that is another way to go to console mode for a single boot to come up in runlevel3 then did xinit /usr/X11R6/bin/rxvt to bring up X with no WM, just a terminal. Then from the terminal I did sapphire to see the error messages as it tried to come up... Helped immensely with debugging. Civileme

All of them or some of them? And, once retrieved, what do I need to do to run them? I have kind of figured out how to run Kpackage. Thanks! Barbara Barbara, I am not sure how well 7.1 will work with KDE 2.1 but see my earlier post, of just a few minutes ago and that attempts to explain how to install the new KDE. Re: [newbie]RealPlayer
There are issues with the rpm. Go to tucows and search for real player and download the xxx.bin version. Then just go to the directory where it is and type: ./thefilename.bin It should install then. -s On Sunday 25 March 2001 05:59 am, you wrote: Dear All, I decided I really wanted to get the RealPlayer installed on my Linux Mandrake 7.2 however the rpm will not install. Gavin Gavin, In order for you to accomplish this you will have to upgrade your current version of KDE, which is likely KDE 2.0 to 2.1, or 2.1beta2. These versions have theme manager in them that will run all your old favorite themes. Mark

Barbara = I you just need to get into console mode once, or very occasionally, just type "linux 3" (w/o quotes) at the boot prompt. If you want to switch to runlevel 3 on an ongoing basis, you will neet to edit /etc/inittab Look for the line that reads: id:5:initdefault and change the 5 to a 3 Of course you must edit this file as root. Re: [newbie]RealPlayer
Hi, Remember that u have to take following precautions: 1) You have to be in SU mode to install 2) you have to be the the directory where u downloaded the .rpm file 3) after installing type "realplay" without quotes 4) If it does not work with realplay come out of SU mode and try again in normal user mode. If the files ur playing are having extensions ".rm" or ".ram" the u have to use Realplayer only. IF any other extensions u have other options. Does anyone know how I can install RealPlayer on LM7.2? Also, if there is another program for Linux that will play pieces that are supposed to be for RealPlayer I would like to know. I would not mind using something else if it works well. The error message I get is just package does not exist. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Re: [newbie] modem
Go into kde systems control and see if you have a communications device listed. Go into console and type: cat /proc/pci (assuming its a pci) and see if you have a communications device listed. If you can find one in either place, note the ioport number (the beginning of the range) and the irq number. Then in a terminal/konsole type: setserial /dev/ttyS? uart 16550A port yours irq yours spd_vhi (where ? is your and yours are yours.) Then open kppp setup. Fill in the blanks with your isp info. And choose the same /dev/ttyS? used in setserial. Try it out. Now here's the thing. Your modem could be on any of the serial ports from ttyS0 to ttyS3. I don't know how to find out which it is on, except by looking in Windows (which is often the same), or by experimentation (which is what I do). (I'm not sure if either of the serial ports as reported in kde systems control will match up to the modem before setserial or not. I mean you could look at each of the serial ports and if any of them have the ioport and irq as your communication device, try that one first. Note: com 1 is ttyS0, com2 is ttyS1, com3 is ttyS2, and com4 is ttyS3.) Just try each: setserial /dev/ttyS0 uart and choose the same in kppp. Try it. Then the next, and so on until you hit the right one. Example setserial command: setserial /dev/ttyS2 uart 16550A port 0xc000 irq 5 spd_vhi -s P.S. Unless it's a software modem, then it will probably not work. If its an isa, let me know, the process is a little different. [newbie] java in Konqueror web browser
I had noticed that the java applets did not function in Konqueror at the nasa.gov website. I like to check the location of the international space station and could only do it in Netscape. So, the purpose of this message is that I discovered in configure konqueror under Konqueror Browser the java tab has a set path or type "java". I changed it by browsing to /usr/jre-sun1.2.2/bin/java and clicking ok. Now the Space station tracker shows up and gives real time readings. So the "java" works for some sites but not for all. If you have the same problem, change to the actual path to the jre file and see if it doesn't solve some problems. Onward and upward? -- Dennis M. registered Linux user # 180842
[newbie] network services not started automatically
Hello. After logging in I am unable to use the network at all (for email or web browsing). I get errors saying I am unable to find the necessary servers when I try to use netscape or an email client. I can fix this by using DrakConf. I go to "Network and Internet configuration" then "configure local network" and keep pressing "ok". Then it asks me if I want to restart the network. I click "yes" and then click "done". From this point the network works great. But I shouldn't have to go through this every time I reboot. How can I prevent having to do this each time? Thanks! Jeff
[newbie] unable to read from cd when emulation scsi
Hello again. I have another question. In order to be able to burn cds I use scsi emulation on both my source cd and my cd recorder. This works fine, but I cannot use gtcd or other programs to listen to music from the source cd. For CD-ROM device, I have "/dev/cdrom" which is a symbolic link to "hdc". This is the same drive I use the ide-scsi emulation on, but the cd player says "no disc. scanning". Do I have to do anything different to listen to cd's when scsi emulation is on? Thanks again! jeff

You will find access to the console mode there. Note that you may have to press carriage return once to get a login prompt but after this all you have to do is login. To start an X session from this prompt either type "startx" or init 5 to get to your normal run level. Regards, Colin Close
