  dispositivi midi:
External MIDI 0 MIDI 0-0 - ALSA device
  Emu10k1 WaveTable Emu10k1 Port 0 - ALSA device
  Emu10k1 WaveTable Emu10k1 Port 1 - ALSA device
  Emu10k1 WaveTable Emu10k1 Port 2 - ALSA device
  Emu10k1 WaveTable Emu10k1 Port 3 - ALSA device

cosi':
ALSA_OUTPUT_PORTS=65:0 65:1 65:2 65:3

Devo configurare KDE sound in qualche maniera particolare?

Put in your installation CD and get it with rpm

It will appear on the KDE menu and the Gnome menu as soon as it is installed.

If you want to print with it, you need also to start cups-lpd mini-daemon
because Lyx, despite its other wonders, talks directly to lpd in its printing
path. The alternative is to print to a file and then use xpp to print from
that postscript file.

OK well the easy way is to bring up an xterm any old time and type

telinit 3

or if you want to leave the screen running, just use ctrl-alt-f2 or f3-f6 and
you will have a real console ready to log in. ctrl-alt-F7 takes you back to
the screen and leaves the console running.

You can make an at-boot change by clicking on DrakConf=linuxconf and
changing the runlevel. If you come up in 3, to get to 5 you can use

startx (Windowmanager name) or startx or init 5 or xinit (window or
xterminal name) The last is very interesting--I booted, told lilo

linux 3 # BTW that is another way to go to console mode for a single boot

to come up in runlevel3

then did

xinit /usr/X11R6/bin/rxvt

to bring up X with no WM, just a terminal.

Then from the terminal I did

sapphire

to see the error messages as it tried to come up... Helped immensely with
debugging.

Well you need qt, and arts and all the packages labeled kde and koffice--you
do not need the packages labeled -devel- or -static- unless you plan to write
some programs using KDE 2.1

best way to put them in? Ufff

Well I would download them all into a /home/username/tmp directory with
nothing else there, then open a Konsole (yeh this is way beyond what kpackage
can do) and

$ su -
password:(your root password)
# cd /home/username/tmp
# rpm -ivh *rpm
and wait for a list of conflicts
remove each conflicting package with

# rpm -e packagename

then try again

You may find a dependency on libkdefakes or something like that

that is where you use

# rpm --nodeps *rpm

Once everything is in

# rpm --rebuilddb
# update-menus

(you just added 80 Mb or so so it is a good idea)

then logout and login (may need to do this twice)

Now your best friend if you like themes will be the legacy theme importer on
the kde control center.

 Barbara

./ tells it to use the current directory immediately instead of searching the
whole execute path

to see the execute path type this in a terminal

echo $PATH

That PATH is what tells the system where to find executables--if the kmud
name were unique and you did

export PATH=/kmud-1.0beta-linux-i386:$PATH

not in a terminal though that would work momentarily, but rather in a file
like
/home/username/.bashrc,
then you would not need the ./

Now in the execution icon just put /kmud-1.0beta1-linux-i386/kmud in the
first box and save it. (When you explicitly state the path, the shell program
will take that instead of searching directories in the PATH variable.)

Well, slow down there, Tex. We don't need to shoot the disk quite yet.

Try this

Put in your CD and boot. When the splash screen appears hit F1 then type
"rescue" (without the quotes). and hit return. When the rescue prompt comes
up, do this

# fdisk -l /dev/hda

That will give you all of your partitions in a list--do you remember which
one was root?

If you do not, then do this for each partition

# mount /dev/hda5 /mnt #the 5 is an example--look at your partition table and
   # use only those linux native not swap
# cd /mnt/etc # if you do NOT get an error message, you have found your root
# umount /dev/hda5 # assuming you have not found it go to the next

Once you have found your old root partition do this

# mount /dev/hda8 /mnt (You may have this mounted already from steps)
# chroot mount
# cat /etc/fstab
You can use the output of the cat command to mount your other partitions.

Now you can archive... You can also try to restore the boot with /sbin/lilo
or the equivalent for grub.

Another sure-fire way to take one out that isn't responding is to open
KPM and kill the app that way. No worries of bothering anything
important cause if you open KPM as a user the only thing you can kill
are apps that you've started, or that carry your userID.

[newbie] resolutions in XF86Config

2001-03-25 Thread Jesse C. Chang

I have an NEC AcuSync 70 (17") monitor and a 3dfx Voodoo 3 graphics card.
When I go into DrakConf to change the resolution, I get the following
choices:

640x480
800x600
1024x768
1152x864
1280x1024

Under Windows, I can run at 1280x960, but not 1280x1024. Maybe I'm weird,
but I want to run LM at 1280x960, because 1280x1024 isn't exactly 4:3 like
all the other resolutions. Is there some way I can edit my XF86Config to
be able to set my resolution to 1280x960? I see a lot of stuff about
horizontal and vertical refresh rates, which I don't know enough about to
mess with...

BTW, LM detects my card as Voodoo 3 (generic), if that matters.

Oh yeah, i'm running LM 7.1, HP Brio 500MHz Celeron.

Thanks,
Jesse

Thanks Civilme for the tips.

However, when I get into rescue mode and type

fdisk -l /dev/hda

I get nothing but the prompt back. No error message.
When I try to mount, it doesn't give me an error, but
instead just doesn't mount anything.

Any additional suggestions?

Gavin,

In order for you to accomplish this you will have to upgrade your
current version of KDE, which is likely KDE 2.0 to 2.1, or 2.1beta2.
These versions have theme manager in them that will run all your old
favorite themes.

I you just need to get into console mode once, or very occasionally, just type "linux
3" (w/o quotes) at the boot prompt. If you want to switch to runlevel 3 on an ongoing
basis, you will neet to edit /etc/inittab
Look for the line that reads:
id:5:initdefault
and change the 5 to a 3
Of course you must edit this file as root.

Hi,

Remember that u have to take following precautions:

1) You have to be in SU mode to install
2) you have to be the the directory where u downloaded the .rpm file
3) after installing type "realplay" without quotes
4) If it does not work with realplay come out of SU mode and try again in
normal user mode.

If the files ur playing are having extensions ".rm" or ".ram" the u have to
use Realplayer only. IF any other extensions u have other options.

Re: [newbie] modem

2001-03-25 Thread s

Go into kde systems control and see if you have a communications device
listed. Go into console and type: cat /proc/pci (assuming its a pci) and
see if you have a communications device listed.

If you can find one in either place, note the ioport number (the beginning of
the range) and the irq number.

Then in a terminal/konsole type:
setserial /dev/ttyS? uart 16550A port yours irq yours spd_vhi
(where ? is your and yours are yours.)

Then open kppp setup. Fill in the blanks with your isp info. And choose
the same /dev/ttyS? used in setserial. Try it out.

Now here's the thing. Your modem could be on any of the serial ports from
ttyS0 to ttyS3. I don't know how to find out which it is on, except by
looking in Windows (which is often the same), or by experimentation (which is
what I do). (I'm not sure if either of the serial ports as reported in kde
systems control will match up to the modem before setserial or not. I mean
you could look at each of the serial ports and if any of them have the ioport
and irq as your communication device, try that one first. Note: com 1 is
ttyS0, com2 is ttyS1, com3 is ttyS2, and com4 is ttyS3.) Just try each:
setserial /dev/ttyS0 uart and choose the same in kppp. Try it. Then
the next, and so on until you hit the right one.

Example setserial command:
setserial /dev/ttyS2 uart 16550A port 0xc000 irq 5 spd_vhi

-s

P.S. Unless it's a software modem, then it will probably not work. If its
an isa, let me know, the process is a little different.

[newbie] java in Konqueror web browser

I had noticed that the java applets did not function in Konqueror at the
nasa.gov website. I like to check the location of the international space

that I discovered in configure konqueror under Konqueror Browser the java
tab has a set path or type "java". I changed it by browsing to
/usr/jre-sun1.2.2/bin/java and clicking ok. Now the Space station tracker
shows up and gives real time readings. So the "java" works for some sites
but not for all. If you have the same problem, change to the actual path to
the jre file and see if it doesn't solve some problems. Onward and upward?

[newbie] network services not started automatically

Hello.

After logging in I am unable to use the network at all (for email or web browsing). I
get errors saying I am unable to find the necessary servers when I try to use netscape
or an email client. I can fix this by using DrakConf. I go to "Network and Internet
configuration" then "configure local network" and keep pressing "ok". Then it asks me
if I want to restart the network. I click "yes" and then click "done". From this
point the network works great. But I shouldn't have to go through this every time I
reboot.

How can I prevent having to do this each time?

Thanks!

[newbie] unable to read from cd when emulation scsi

Hello again. I have another question.

In order to be able to burn cds I use scsi emulation on both my source cd and my cd

from the source cd. For CD-ROM device, I have "/dev/cdrom" which is a symbolic link
to "hdc". This is the same drive I use the ide-scsi emulation on, but the cd player
says "no disc. scanning".

Do I have to do anything different to listen to cd's when scsi emulation is on?

Thanks again!

Dear Barbara,
The simple way is to look under the shutdown menu at the graphical
login. You will find access to the console mode there. Note that you may
have to press carriage return once to get a login prompt but after this
all you have to do is login. To start an X session from this prompt
