[newbie-it] mad mouse

OK, sounds fair enough, but my question is this: why does MandrakeUpdate tell me that I do not have the current version of rpm(x) even though I know that I do? If I download and install the latest version, it bombs out because it is already installed! I do run "update list" after every install, and have updated the rpm database from the command line as well. Actually the RC-1 came out on April 8, so there was a over a week between it and the final. The purpose of the RC-1 was that it contained all the pkgs. which were to be included in the final and running it on varied systems would allow for any showstopper bug to be discovered and corrected. The only 1 found to my knowledge delt with the 2.4.3-20 kernel and it was fixed. Is the final Bug free? No. It is a fact of computer life that All software contains bugs. There were several picky, grammar errors through out the RC1 install that lends an unprofessional feeling - nothing to do with the software, but makes you wonder . A friend of mine has had problems with his USB mouse with each beta release (not recognized at all), I use the Logitech USB Optical MouseMan Wheel on all my system and have had no problem configuring it in any of the betas, the RC or the final. Your friend may have a problem with his system configuration that is the causing his mouse problems rather than the software. and I don't know if the prob was fixed in RC1. The 8.0 release seemed very quick - also very close on the heels of Redhat announcing their new release. As to the proximity of the release of RH 7.1. Mandrake was not rushing 8.0 rather RH took added time with 7.1 after the disaster they faced releasing 7.0 before it was ready. Re: [newbie] Linux for Windows
Actually there are many of us that read this list that know about this very thing. And the single most important thing we know about this particular topic is that if you want to get Linux to install correctly DO NOT attempt to install Linux on a DOS partition. Install it on it's own partition. Vfats do not a proper Linux partition make. Go the extra few inches on this journey, do a little "light" reading and partition your drive and install Linux the way it should be done. There are many of us here that are more then happy to help you understand just how this is to be done. RE: [newbie] RC1 vs. 8.0 ?
I don't think you should be making any of these judgements until you look at the 8.0 final. First of all, remember that they are all betas and prereleases. They TOLD you it had bugs. They TOLD you it wasn't finished. Also, it was not two days between RC1 and Final. It was several weeks, actually. You may have downloaded RC1 late, but that doesn't mean that work on the final was rushed. As far as the language remember that Mandrake is a French based company. I'm sure they utilize developers from many different countries. It is silly to assume that English will be every Mandrake developer's mother tongue. When you consider they have about 50 languages on Mandrake, you should be able to excuse some grammar/spelling issues AT LEAST until the final comes out. RE: [newbie] RC1 vs. 8.0 ?
OK - my last comment on this, I didn't mean for this to start a thread and hope it dies with this - I didn't make any judgements like you concluded - of course I know the beta's had some bugs - I was testing them - my last statement was that I would download the 8.0 and see how it was - I naturally would expect that trivial, surface bugs would be fixed - I was not "offended" by the English errors, but that still qualifies as errors in the English release candidate, the same as it would count as an error in a user manual - I was not bashing Mandrake as you seem to think - and yes, I did miss the RC1 release date - but, testing on beta 3 was still going on with Crashtesters, even as the RC1 was out and even as 8.0 was released - seems cross-purpose to me, but thats just how it looks to me. I did not have a heart attack or over-react as you have to my email. I have been testing the betas and generally had nothing to report as all components seemed to work great on my system. So, mea culpa, mea culpa - I wasn't passing judgement, regardless of what you and a few others have thought 'nuff said philomena At 01:08 PM 4/20/2001 -0700, Todd Flinders wrote: I don't think you should be making any of these judgements until you look at the 8.0 final. For your Xv problem, check out Xine's HOWTO here: http://www.srcf.ucam.org/~rjw57/xine/howto/howto-9.html Specifically in the troubleshooting of the HOWTO it states the following, but you should read the entire HOWTO for all the details: 9.10 Now how do I get this Xv extension to work? First you need to install/use XFree 4.x. Once you got that you have to make sure the XFree drivers you're using are supporting Xv on your hardware. Here are some locations to look for suitable drivers: g200/g400: xfree 4.x supports these out-of-the-box nvidia cards : www.nvidia.com (they've got binary drivers) ATI cards: GATOS www.linuxvideo.org/gatos/ i815 : the latest xfree 4.x code supports these 3dfx (voodoo): the latest xfree 4.x code supports these --- Stefaans Mostert [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Use mplayer Search from freshmeat or sourceforge Stefaans On Thursday 19 April 2001 01:20, Joan Tur wrote: Now i've tryed xine-0.3.5-1mdk and the following error messages appear: video_out_xv: no video port found Hope that helps! [newbie] Failed to update from 7.2 to 8.0
Hello, I tried to update my MDK 7.2 setup to 8.0 and encountered some problems during the installation. Here's what happened: a) Downloaded both 8.0-inst and 8.0-ext and burned them on CDs. b) Booted with the 8.0-inst CD and got into the GUI installation interface. All my hardware seemed to be recognized correctly during the boot process. c) Selected the "Expert/Update" option. d) Went through the first few steps (language, keyboard, mouse etc.), but in the "Format Partitions" step I kept getting "Cannot mount device" error. It didn't say which device it couldn't mount (the down side of GUI installation, I guess). This step could not be skipped and the only way to quit the installation is to press the reset button. And here's my configuration: Hardware: . Abit BP6 . a Maxtor 20G ATA66 hard drive on IDE0 (ATA33 interface) . a DVD drive and a CDR on IDE1 . Promise ATA100 PCI card . a IBM 30G ATA100 hard drive connected to the Promise card Software: . Win2k and Mandrake 7.2 with kernel 2.4.3 . both hard drives are split half-half between Windows and Linux . The linux partitions are - The Maxtor disk: /, /home, swap - The IBM disk: /mnt/ibm, /usr/local Any ideas on what could have gone wrong? With so many exciting new features in 8.0 it's really pretty frustrating that I couldn't even get it installed. Thanks a lot, - Steve __ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Re: [newbie] Re: [expert] Supermount problems
First of all, I didn't write that.. hahah But the other thing to do is check your symlinks. Make sure the devices are linked properly. I know there is an issue with burners not linking properly. By any chance is one of these cd-roms a burner? A quick way to check for this is to look in your /dev directory and ls -l cdrom* If you see cdrom, cdrom1, and cdrom2, then that's likely a problem. For example, I have my DVD player as master of my second IDE and my burner as slave on the second IDE. Therefore I deleted my bad links (rm /dev/cdrom*) and created new ones: ln -s hdc cdrom ln -s scd0 cdrom1 I then updated /etc/fstab changing all references of cdrom2 to cdrom1. I removed cdrom2 from /mnt and created /mnt/cdrom1. Then I was good to go. Maybe that's the issue you are having with your cdroms. I have never owned a zip drive so I have no idea of how they are supposed to be set up. But if you know how it should look, make sure it is linked properly as well. If the link is bad, you will get that EXACT error that you are having. That is what it would say to me until I fixed my cdrom links. Hope that helps. Write again with more detail if this doesn't fix the problem. --- Jay DeKing [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Todd Flinders wrote: I cannot access my zip or floppy drives, even when logged in as root.
