[newbie-it] mad mouse

2001-04-20 Thread Franco Dorigo

Ciao a tutti,

quelli linux no.

Xcdroast says that it can find the drive and read/write but I get the
following error when I try to burn a track (it actually might be a cdrecord

Cdrecord also says that mod scsi is not installed, though ide-scsi.c is
installed and cdrecord -scanbus locates the drive on scd0.

 Any ideas?
I have seen this error and believe it is due to the lack of a path for image
to disk. Go through the setup and look for HD settings and temporary image
directories. You will need to set one up and then browse to it and add. Hope
this isn't preaching to the choir and solves the problem. Onward and upward,

I use an alias in TC shell like so:

tr -d '\015' \!:1 \!:2

Called from the command line for instance like this:

cleanlines oldfile newfile

This simply deletes all the ASCII 0xd characters.

You could use the transform command directly:

tr -d '\015' oldfile newfile

./configure \
--prefix=/usr/local/apache \
--enable-module=most \
--enable-shared=max \

The screen shows that I got some errors
/usr/local/apache_1.3.19/src/modules/standard/mod_auth_dbm.c:85:22:
db1/ndbm.h : No such file or directory

I found that when I installed Mandrake 8.0, it doesn't create the directory
/usr/include/db1, so it gets an error while trying to read
/usr/include/db1/ndbm.h file. So, I think it probably an error on Mandrake
 8.0.
However, as I remove the line --enable-module=most \ , that is:

 --prefix=/usr/local/apache \
 --enable-shared=max \
 --enable-module=ssl \
 --enable-shared=ssl
 make
 make install

It all works, and I can successfully configure php later, but I can not
#load additional module on apache, such as gd or zlib etc.. So I think I
 cannot comment out --enable-module=most

 Thanks in advance.

RE: [newbie] Telnet

2001-04-20 Thread Terry

I use a program called VNC, which allows a person to
remotely control another machine (be it mac, windows,
linux, os/2, what have you) from your machine. A
window appears on your desk that shows the desktop of
the remote computer you wish to control. All that
needs to be done is to install the server software on
the machine you wish to control, and install the
client software on the machine you wish to control
from. The programs are very small ( 1mb ). I use
it here at work on my Linux machine to remotely
control my windows laptop so I don't have to move back
and forth to each one. Here's their website address:

http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/

I believe it also works in the shell, but could be
wrong. Hope that helps.

Hi,

I've managed to remove the little panel widget which lets you choose
between workspaces and can't for the life of me figure out how to get it

arrow, but I'd like to use the widget also. Any ideas on how to restore
this widget ?

Also, I've built a shared library (xxx.so) and installed it in
/usr/local/lib. When I run the program which requires the library, I'm
told it cannot be found. I moved the library to /usr/lib and the system
was then able to find it. So, how can I tell Linux to look in
/usr/local/lib for shared librarys ? Is there something similar to the
PATH environment variable, to which I can add '/usr/local/lib' ?

Thanks for any help,

I have not done a package compare, but 8.0 looks
to be more or less the same as RC-1.
8.0 does have a latter kernel build, 2.4.3-20
versus 2.4.3-10 in RC-1.
I am sure there are probably other patches and/or
fixes that have been applied to the final as well.

If you are happy with the RC-1 do you need to upgrade
to the final?
That is a personal choice.
I have a DSL connection and a burner, so I do it
for no better reason than I can do so from the ISOs.

OK, sounds fair enough, but my question is this: why does MandrakeUpdate
tell me that I do not have the current version of rpm(x) even though I
know that I do? If I download and install the latest version, it bombs
out because it is already installed!

I do run "update list" after every install, and have updated the rpm
database from the command line as well.

Note that this does not happen with every rpm, but the ones it does
happen with do it every time.

I'm not sure if I'm happy with the RC1, as I just downloaded,
 burnt, and
installed in on Teusday ! I haven't had time yet to see how
 it worked. I'm
concerned a bit since it seems odd that at the same time that
 Crashtesters
are still reporting problems with Beta 3, this RC1 release
 comes out, and
then 2 days later the 8.0 is out ?

Actually the RC-1 came out on April 8, so there was a over a
week between it and the final.
The purpose of the RC-1 was that it contained all the pkgs.
which were to be included in the final and running it on
varied systems would allow for any showstopper bug to be
discovered and corrected. The only 1 found to my knowledge
delt with the 2.4.3-20 kernel and it was fixed.
Is the final Bug free?
No.
It is a fact of computer life that All software contains
bugs.

There were several picky,
 grammar errors
through out the RC1 install that lends an unprofessional
 feeling - nothing
to do with the software, but makes you wonder . A friend of
 mine has had
problems with his USB mouse with each beta release (not
 recognized at all),

I use the Logitech USB Optical MouseMan Wheel on all my system
and have had no problem configuring it in any of the betas, the RC
or the final.
Your friend may have a problem with his system configuration that
is the causing his mouse problems rather than the software.

and I don't know if the prob was fixed in RC1. The 8.0
 release seemed very
quick - also very close on the heels of Redhat announcing their new
 release.

As to the proximity of the release of RH 7.1.
Mandrake was not rushing 8.0 rather RH took added
time with 7.1 after the disaster they faced releasing
7.0 before it was ready.

However, I'll download the 8.0 ISOs as soon as I can
 get onto a
mirror and see how it is.

I think you will be happy with it

Re: [newbie] Linux for Windows

2001-04-20 Thread Mark Weaver

Actually there are many of us that read this list that know about this
very thing. And the single most important thing we know about this
particular topic is that if you want to get Linux to install correctly DO
NOT attempt to install Linux on a DOS partition. Install it on it's own
partition. Vfats do not a proper Linux partition make.

Go the extra few inches on this journey, do a little "light" reading and
partition your drive and install Linux the way it should be done. There
are many of us here that are more then happy to help you understand just
how this is to be done. If you need help just holler.

RE: [newbie] RC1 vs. 8.0 ?

2001-04-20 Thread Todd Flinders

I don't think you should be making any of these
judgements until you look at the 8.0 final.

First of all, remember that they are all betas and
prereleases. They TOLD you it had bugs. They TOLD
you it wasn't finished.

Also, it was not two days between RC1 and Final. It
was several weeks, actually. You may have downloaded
RC1 late, but that doesn't mean that work on the final
was rushed.

As far as the language remember that Mandrake is a
French based company. I'm sure they utilize
developers from many different countries. It is silly
to assume that English will be every Mandrake
developer's mother tongue. When you consider they
have about 50 languages on Mandrake, you should be
able to excuse some grammar/spelling issues AT LEAST
until the final comes out. I'd be curious to see how
much you were offended with the French translations in
the betas.

Finally, before you have a heart attack do not that
this is a .0 release. .0 usually signifies a
significant change. .0 tends to be the most likely to
have issues. Now the first people looking at 8.0 tend
to be very impressed. Some are even claiming it to be
the best Mandrake to date. Maybe it's perfect. But
likely, there will be some issues along the way. Be
patient and understanding. Don't carry your issues
from bugs in a development release to the final
version. Judge it for what it is.

RE: [newbie] RC1 vs. 8.0 ?

2001-04-20 Thread Philomena

OK - my last comment on this, I didn't mean for this to start a thread and
hope it dies with this - I didn't make any judgements like you concluded -
of course I know the beta's had some bugs - I was testing them - my last
statement was that I would download the 8.0 and see how it was - I
naturally would expect that trivial, surface bugs would be fixed - I was
not "offended" by the English errors, but that still qualifies as errors in
the English release candidate, the same as it would count as an error in a
user manual - I was not bashing Mandrake as you seem to think - and yes, I
did miss the RC1 release date - but, testing on beta 3 was still going on
with Crashtesters, even as the RC1 was out and even as 8.0 was released -
seems cross-purpose to me, but thats just how it looks to me. I did not
have a heart attack or over-react as you have to my email. I have been
testing the betas and generally had nothing to report as all components
seemed to work great on my system.

So, mea culpa, mea culpa - I wasn't passing judgement, regardless of what
you and a few others have thought

'nuff said

9.10 Now how do I get this Xv extension to work?

First you need to install/use XFree 4.x. Once you got

using are supporting Xv on your hardware. Here are
some locations to look for suitable drivers:

  g200/g400: xfree 4.x supports these

[newbie] Failed to update from 7.2 to 8.0

2001-04-20 Thread chengyu sun

Hello,

I tried to update my MDK 7.2 setup to 8.0 and
encountered some problems during the installation.
Here's what happened:

a) Downloaded both 8.0-inst and 8.0-ext and burned
them on CDs.

b) Booted with the 8.0-inst CD and got into the
GUI installation interface. All my hardware seemed
to be recognized correctly during the boot process.

c) Selected the "Expert/Update" option.

d) Went through the first few steps (language,
keyboard, mouse etc.), but in the "Format Partitions"
step I kept getting "Cannot mount device" error.
It didn't say which device it couldn't mount (the
down side of GUI installation, I guess). This step
could not be skipped and the only way to quit the
installation is to press the reset button.

And here's my configuration:

Hardware:
 . Abit BP6
 . a Maxtor 20G ATA66 hard drive on IDE0
   (ATA33 interface)
 . a DVD drive and a CDR on IDE1
 . Promise ATA100 PCI card
. a IBM 30G ATA100 hard drive connected to the
   Promise card

Software:
 . Win2k and Mandrake 7.2 with kernel 2.4.3
. both hard drives are split half-half between
   Windows and Linux
 . The linux partitions are
   - The Maxtor disk: /, /home, swap
   - The IBM disk: /mnt/ibm, /usr/local

Any ideas on what could have gone wrong? With
so many exciting new features in 8.0 it's really
pretty frustrating that I couldn't even get it
installed.

Thanks a lot,

- Steve

Re: [newbie] Re: [expert] Supermount problems

2001-04-20 Thread Todd Flinders

First of all, I didn't write that.. hahah

But the other thing to do is check your symlinks.
Make sure the devices are linked properly. I know
there is an issue with burners not linking properly.
By any chance is one of these cd-roms a burner?

A quick way to check for this is to look in your /dev
directory and ls -l cdrom*

If you see cdrom, cdrom1, and cdrom2, then that's
likely a problem.

For example, I have my DVD player as master of my
second IDE and my burner as slave on the second IDE.
Therefore I deleted my bad links (rm /dev/cdrom*) and
created new ones:

ln -s hdc cdrom
ln -s scd0 cdrom1

I then updated /etc/fstab changing all references of
cdrom2 to cdrom1. I removed cdrom2 from /mnt and
created /mnt/cdrom1. Then I was good to go.

Maybe that's the issue you are having with your
cdroms. I have never owned a zip drive so I have no
idea of how they are supposed to be set up. But if
you know how it should look, make sure it is linked
properly as well.

If the link is bad, you will get that EXACT error that
you are having. That is what it would say to me until
I fixed my cdrom links.

Hope that helps. Write again with more detail if this
doesn't fix the problem.

I cannot access my zip or floppy drives, even when

The message I get is "input/output error." While
 researching this issue,
the only hint I found was "try a different disk, you
 probably have a bad
one in the drive." But, the floppy is a Mandrake
 boot disk, created in
Mandrake 7.2; I use it to boot my machine (GRUB
 problem with hda,
subject of another post) and it works fine.

When I do an ls -l of the /mnt directory, both the
 floppy and zip are
shown as having a size of 0.

Clues, anybody? By the way, I did add myself to the
 floppy group, and
there is *no* zip group listed.

Hoping this post doesn't bounce back like my
 previous attempt,

Try adding yourself to the cdrom and zip groups.
